"I think about baseball when I wake up in the morning. I think about it all day and I dream about it at night. The only time I don't think about it is when I'm playing it." -- Carl Yastrzemski
But if the Brewers are gonna win this game let them do it over Howry in a complete meltdown….then maybe Lou will get the point that he doesn’t deserve to be on the NLDS roster.
pinella may really have to answer some questions this off season
1) pitching howry in a game like this that could help us play the damaged mets rather than fully rested dodgers
2) bringing howry to post season – he WILL give up a HR in the post season if lou pitches him
i don't think its a case of pinella not taking the game seriously
It is the concept of having a guy on the post season roster that cannot be trusted in any meaningful situation, hence what is the point of having him on the roster. Bring another bat
Is everyone counting them out in the AL because of the youth and lack of experience? If they get Crawford back at even 60% I could see them making a run
Man, I wish we could go into the playoffs on the high the Brewers have right now. Instead, we go in rested but not playing especially well. And I also don’t understand how a pitcher can get rocked all year and still make the postseason roster. Howry hasn’t had a thing all year, just straight fastballs that get killed.
… how they get in (if they get in). The bottom line is that the Cubs play who they play. If its the Dodgers, its a solid but not spectacular team. If its the Mets is a tremendous ace followed by a line-up that can be a sleeping giant. Anything can happen in a 5 or 7 game series. The Cubs need to play good ball and drive in runs when they have the opportunity.
And I’m commenting now on the concept of a team “backing into the playoffs”. Everything resets once the playoffs start and it doesn’t matter how a team gets in. I’m not sure how its pertinent to anything how a team gets in. As I said in a five or seven game series anything can happen. So whether the Brewers get in “on an emotional high” and that carries forward or whether they backed in and are in a shambles, who knows. Anything can happen and the best team doesn’t always win.
is Lou’s continued use of Bob Howry. So damn confusing. If we can see it, if the other hitters in the league can see it, why does Lou have such blinders on?
doesn’t want it to look like the fans are calling the shots. All I can say is the heat will be on Lou if Howry is responsible for a loss that knocks out the Cubs.
Maybe Dome could mention to Howry the sense of shame and losing face in Japanese society, causing Howry to publicly apologize and request being left off the playoff roster.
Kindly step away from the ledge. For goodness sake, the playoffs haven’t even started yet, a game hasn’t even been won or lost in the first series, and some of you are wanting to jump. Guess what? Come Wednesday, none of this matters. CC could choke on a ham sandwich, while so many on the Dodgers’ pitching staff could come down with diphtheria you would think they all stepped off the Oregon Trail. Point is, no one knows what will happen, so lets have a nice few days off, and give our boys all the support they need on Wednesday.
They’ve come back from I don’t how many times now. When things look their worst, this team makes the best of it. In all my life, I’ve never seen this team do that. We’ve all been given so many awesome moments this season, that it would be foolish to call it a season just because Howry gave it away in this one game. No reason to feel bad about anything right now. Not Soto, DeRo, Soriano, Dome, Z, Howry, etc.
To end this on an even more positive note, if anything at all disturbs me, it’s that I didn’t start posting here sooner, but I’ve had a blast for I don’t know how long with laughing at a lot of things you all say. You’re all some of the best fans I’ve met, and it was real cool to bump into Al a couple weeks ago. So if I feel bad about anything, it’s that. I do think you’re all great though, so I look forward to enjoying this postseason with y’all too.
six outs away from clinching a tie for the AL central. 4-0 going into the 8th. If the Twins win the Sox must beat the Tigers tomorrow to force a one-game playoff at US Cellular on Tuesday.
If Cubs fans think THEY hate the Marlins for 2003 just think of this
Last year the team to get 7 runs off Glavine before inning one was over was the Marlins. With the Cubs at least they were trying to advance to the WS, here they’re just playing spoilers.
we didnt’ win 97 games this year by accident. We have a good team and Lou will have them ready come wed doesn’t matter who we play.. I agree with nervous a few spots above me, I think we’re going to have a fun October. Go Cubs Go
afford to build something so massive out of anything less than wads of chewed gum. Imagine how much concrete you would need to do a “to scale” replica of Gagne.
They never get the PBP quite right and then the other team hits a home run and she yells “Home Run…Yeah” and then I ask her which team and she says “Those guys wearing red uniforms” and your marriage goes downhill from there.
I wanted the Mets to make the playoffs just so that the Cubs were guaranteed an easy NLDS opponent, and so that the final game at Shea stadium could be a CUBS PLAYOFF WIN.
However, watching the Mets get their hearts ripped out on national TV – when all they had to do to keep their playoff hopes alive was win a home game against the freaking Marlins – was very, very satisfying.
I KNEW when they brought him into a tie game he would do his patient “I give up a HR” inning. He had only ONE good game against the Mets last week. His other performances have been shit. How he makes the playoffs is beyond me…
It will cost us a game. He’s the shits this year. He gives up more big runs in close situations than anyone i can ever remember. Please leave him off the playoff roster
When Lansing was building a new minor league ballpark in the 90’s they had a contest to name the stadium and my entry was “The Lansing Boils”. I didn’t win.
I’d much rather see Wuertz over Howry. I know that at times Wuertz has problems throwing strikes but in a situation where you have a big bat coming w/ a tendency to strike out, I’d much rather have Wurtz’s sliders rather than Howry’s fastball.
at 1:00 today, with all of the NFL’s early games in progress as well as 4 playoff-determining baseball games going on, ESPN was showing bowling, and ESPN2 was showing a children’s scrabble tournament.
Dodgers got to coast against sub .500 teams for the last 6 weeks while we have
had to face play-off caliber teams. The only reason the Dodgers are above .500 now is because of the weak division they are in. I like the tune up that the Cubs have had to endure and how well they have played with mostly b-team line ups (& bullpens).
If the Cubs play the solid baseball they are capable of playing (and keep Howry out of the games), I have no doubt that the Cubs should be able to control their own destiny.
You said they never played poorly all season, I brought up two stretches where they did. Bringing up a good month refutes the fact that they had poor stretches????
The choices to round out the Cub bullpen are thin. They are not going to throw the rehabilitating Angel Guzman into the playoff fire and Chad Gaudin has been awful since the back thing. It is Howry (and Sarmardizija) by default folks.
Up until today Chad Gaudin has been lit up every game since he came back from the back thing. And like I said it is obviously the case that the Cubs aren’t comfortable with pushing the rehabilitating Angel Guzman any more past today. Perhaps this is on advice of the medical people and he’s come up against the prescriped limit on innings and pitches set out for him in 2008.
Because statements of the blindingly obvious like “Bob Howry should not make the playoff roster” are useless without perspective on the other candidates. Clearly the Cubs have hestitancy about putting Guzman on a playoff roster and the only plausible reason is that the medical people don’t want him pushed any more. But if you have evidence of a vast right wing conspiracy in favor of Howry then please do share.
performance this year would allow lou to pitch him in the post season. While I agree that the other option are not ideal, he has just performed too poorly for Lou to march him out there.
If the Cubs don’t make it I want a rays/brewers world series just to stick it to Fox and ESPN. Fox cause they show the games and espn because ESPN sucks.
is that Bob Howry is not a starter. Ryan Dempster, Rich Harden, and Ted Lilly are. I think if Harden can go at least 6, maybe 7, we may not really need Bob, and certainly not in a game of any importance.
….the minute they show him holding up his new Angels jersey. LOL.
Didn’t quite work the way the Brewers wanted. They thought CC/Sheets were going to dominate and overtake us and cruise. Backing into the playoffs with a starting rotation in shambles and without Sheets, I can’t see them beating the Phillies.
catcher and third, but a big arm like that would put them right up near the Cubs. Their bullpen is descent and they could contend next year if the learn to stop whining. A new manager may be in the cards for them.
If they hadn’t made the playoffs, I would think they might shell out that kind of cash in order to take another shot at it. However, now that they’re in, they’re not gonna spend much in the offseason.
CC Sabathia will be in Yankee pinstripes next season...
And Milwaukee will lose 90 games. But that’s in the future. In the immediate I will predict that the Phillies blow through the Brewers in 3 games en route to a matchup against the Cubs in the NLCS.

MOCubsfan - September 28, 2008
There is a thing about momentum going into the playoffs
Brewers will have that as much as anyone now, assuming the that team from NY loses
Weeghman Park - September 28, 2008
Not necessarily
DET slumped into the playoffs, went to the WS, where they lost to STL, who also slumped into the playoffs.
BOS slumped into the playoffs, went to the WS, where they beat COL, who was about as hot as you can be going into (and through) the playoffs.
Momentum going into the postseason is overrated.
cocknfire - September 28, 2008
All thing being equal would you rather have it or not?
Weeghman Park - September 28, 2008
I'd rather have it, but I'd also rather have a lucky unicorn in the dugout
Either way, I don’t think it’s very important
cocknfire - September 28, 2008
then there's the 1988 Dodgers and the 2007 Rockies
all things being equal, it couldn’t hurt having some momentum.
CaliCub - September 28, 2008

Man, I wish we could go into the playoffs on the high the Brewers have right now. Instead, we go in rested but not playing especially well. And I also don’t understand how a pitcher can get rocked all year and still make the postseason roster. Howry hasn’t had a thing all year, just straight fastballs that get killed.

Howry

Gleebo - September 28, 2008

Everyone just keeps
Pointing to Colorado from last year with the momentum and short rest going into the playoffs.
BIG difference between them and the Brewers. They won 21 of 22 or something insane like that.
The Brewers won like 8 games the entire month.
Gleebo - September 28, 2008
I would argue that the Brewers really backed into the playoffs...
…and their starting pitching is in shambles going into the next series. I don’t see them getting past Philly.
carmen_fanzone - September 28, 2008
excellent point
Emelie - September 28, 2008
who cares...
The Cubs need to play good ball and drive in runs when they have the opportunity.
dmlichte - September 28, 2008

I was commenting on the original post...
…the “high of the Brewers as they get in”……maybe you should have done the same?
carmen_fanzone - September 28, 2008
I did comment
And I’m commenting now on the concept of a team “backing into the playoffs”. Everything resets once the playoffs start and it doesn’t matter how a team gets in. I’m not sure how its pertinent to anything how a team gets in. As I said in a five or seven game series anything can happen. So whether the Brewers get in “on an emotional high” and that carries forward or whether they backed in and are in a shambles, who knows. Anything can happen and the best team doesn’t always win.
dmlichte - September 28, 2008
gotcha, sport
carmen_fanzone - September 28, 2008
My ONLY complaint in this wonderful season...
is Lou’s continued use of Bob Howry. So damn confusing. If we can see it, if the other hitters in the league can see it, why does Lou have such blinders on?
I just fail to understand.

This team has made
believers out of us so many times this season. I see no reason to not believe they will continue to so that. I have faith in them.
sue369 - September 28, 2008
I know
They’ve come back from I don’t how many times now.

Let’s get this party started!!
LAcarl519 - September 28, 2008
The Cubs
The Cubs are the only team in the NL postseason that has played well all season.
puckishcubsfan - September 28, 2008
Yeah, that 6 game losing streak was awesome
NittanyCub - September 28, 2008
A couple of losing streaks
dodgers played badly pretty much all but the last 2 months.
Phillies were hot and cold.
Brewers sucked to start the season.
puckishcubsfan - September 28, 2008
That's the most subjective reasoning I've ever heard in my life
How about mid-June when they were 3-11?
Or from late June-early July when they lost 7 of 10?
Or when they were 1-6 in mid-July?
Or can you just stipulate that as a “couple of losing streaks” instead of saying something as bland as “sucked to start the [mid]season”?
NittanyCub - September 28, 2008
?
All season? Did you forget mid-August to mid-July? Early September?
Shanghai Badger - September 28, 2008

puckishcubsfan - September 28, 2008
Apples <> Oranges

when they were mediocre at best

If Twins lose and Sox lose tomorrow Sox win tomorrow Sox are champs.

puckishcubsfan - September 28, 2008
Again, if not Bob Howry then WHO ....
The choices to round out the Cub bullpen are thin. They are not going to throw the rehabilitating Angel Guzman into the playoff fire and Chad Gaudin has been awful since the back thing. It is Howry (and Sarmardizija) by default folks.
MDBNIU - September 28, 2008
? Those two are pitching better right now. Did you see today's game from the beginning?
Fraggin Judge - September 28, 2008
Guzman over Howry, thank you very much
CaliCub - September 28, 2008
Sigh....
MDBNIU - September 28, 2008
f*** the doctors, pitch the guy who gives you a chance to win the pennant
lest ye forget, PITCHING IS KING!
CaliCub - September 28, 2008
And up until today Howry has excelled in allowing HR's to every opponent out there.
Fraggin Judge - September 28, 2008
I agree 100% that Bob Howry is awful...
…but AGAIN, I don’t see the options beyond him. Apparently neither do Hendry, Lou and Larry.
MDBNIU - September 28, 2008
I'm just scratching my head here as to why they think Howry is better than Guzmán at this point.
He just proved today that he can give them a few good inning that Howry can’t pitch at present.
Fraggin Judge - September 28, 2008
obviously?
it is obviously the case that the Cubs aren’t comfortable with pushing the rehabilitating Angel Guzman any more past today.
could you site a reference?
carmen_fanzone - September 28, 2008
I can only assume this...
Because if Guzman weren’t under strict medical microscope right now then it would seem he would easily be the guy to make the NLDS roster.
MDBNIU - September 28, 2008
Ah, Assuming...
so NOT so obvious then. Gotcha.
carmen_fanzone - September 28, 2008
What's your plausible explanation then???
Because statements of the blindingly obvious like “Bob Howry should not make the playoff roster” are useless without perspective on the other candidates. Clearly the Cubs have hestitancy about putting Guzman on a playoff roster and the only plausible reason is that the medical people don’t want him pushed any more. But if you have evidence of a vast right wing conspiracy in favor of Howry then please do share.
MDBNIU - September 28, 2008
I find it difficult to believe that Howry's
performance this year would allow lou to pitch him in the post season. While I agree that the other option are not ideal, he has just performed too poorly for Lou to march him out there.
willie mays hayes' gloves - September 28, 2008
Gaudin pitched well today...
Guzman was dominating. Those would be two choices.
carmen_fanzone - September 28, 2008
I'd take either one over Howry at this point
Is Howry’s experience somehow helping the team off the field? Because it is completely useless on it.
JohnM - September 28, 2008
I'd take Damn near anyone over Howry
BradB311 - September 28, 2008

Gleebo - September 28, 2008
They sill have a couple of holes at

willie mays hayes' gloves - September 28, 2008

I finally get to chime in with my thoughts here....
First off Why are people thinking that facing the Mets would have been a cake walk?
I dont know about you but the chance of facing Johan twice in a series??? UHH NO THANK YOU.
Also Delgado, Wright, Reyes, Beltran scare me ALOT more then Manny, Either, Kemp and Kent. Just my opinion.
Seems like we where dreading the fact of facing the D-Backs, and would have rather seen the Dodgers anyway.. Now we got our wish and watch the Mets.
Lets just sit back and enjoy.
Galvan316 - September 28, 2008
* And we wish for the Mets
not watch the Mets.
