The only thing Governor Blago loves more than the Cubs is hearing himself talk.
Jim Belushi is pretty annoying in all but the smallest of doses.
You shouldn’t monkey around with “Go Cubs Go” – the original is by far the best.
Derrek Lee is awesome.
But the main thing I learned today is that this time just being there is not enough. Last year it felt like simply getting to the post-season carried with it a measure of vindication. This year the crowd seemed less happy to just be in the playoffs, but more excited to go forward.
Jim had to have had a few cocktails for lunch but his rendition of Sweet Home Chicago was really cool.
The most annoying thing about the Blago speech for me was how he urged everyone to write to our local sportswriters about voting for Santo for the HOF, only the writers are not voting.
I also learned Soto has become a huge fan favorite. He seemed to get the loudest ovation whenever mentioned.
I was fortunate enough to attend two games that made the highlight reel — Henry Blanco’s walk-off single against the Cardinals, and the Cubs comeback from down 6-2 to the Brewers on September 18.
I was up in Minoqua ignoring the outside world when I walked into a German beer garden themed bar. I was only going to have one and get on my way when I look up and see that the Cubs were on. What great luck. Well of course I had to stay to the end. IIRC it was an extra innings game and the wide wasnt to happy with how long it took or how many beers I had. Oh well, I at least I got to sin Go Cubs Go in northern wisconsin!
.
When Sammy was here and Moises in ‘05 and ’04 and ’03, we had great lineups, but we didn’t have as good pitching as we have this year. We have great starting pitching and a great bullpen. Woody in the bullpen with Marmol and Samardzija, and getting Harden from Oakland and getting Z healthy … this is the best pitching we’ve had in a long time here.
Thinks Lou should have pulled Z- Ask Stoney if he was pitching a no-no if he should have been pulled.
’’I would have pulled him in the sixth. A manager is paid for some very tough decisions and no-hitters are delightful. You can always say you have a no-hitter.
’’He is becoming Sammy [Sosa] Jr. They are creating another monster on the North Side.
‘’This is a really talented guy, but so was Sosa. But the point is, if you remain completely complicit, in guys you know in taking more and more, eventually the tail cannot wag the dog.’’
Stoney has been spending too much time on the southside, apparently he still has a knee-jerk reaction to questioning Managerial decisions.
I used to love listening to Stoney- sniff it will never be the same
Some day Cubs fans will realize it. Lets face it guys, we all want him to be the GM for some crazy reason, but if he is or would be so good at being a GM then why has no team picked him up as a GM.
On my way home from the airport (yes it was out of the way). About 30 people watching the Cub’s workout from the “knot” hole and at least 30 more with gloves on Waveland hoping for a home run ball. Pretty cool scene for a non-gameday with lots of clouds and cold temperatures.
In case you havent noticed whether you agree or disagree..

for game 1 was announced as:
Furcal, SS
Martin, C
Ramirez, LF
Ethier, RF
Loney, 1B
Kemp, CF
DeWitt, 2B
Blake, 3B
Lowe, P
Btw, while the Dodgers announced their 25 man, teams don’t have to officially do it ’til tomorrow morning, which is possibly as long as Pinella might take. The Dodgers could also change theirs before then. Dodger fans are rejoicing that Mark Sweeney was left off the roster, he of the like 100 OPS or something.
except for Pie vs. Hoffpauir. Paul Sullivan reports that DeRosa and Cedeno are in despite their recent nagging injuries. Unless there’s some surprise like Howry volunteering not to pitch (yeah, right), the only thing up in the air is Felix or Micah.
My connection came through at the last possible second, and I could not be more excited! Another Madison to Chicago road trip! (And I’m on fire with the Cubs right now, the last two games I attended were Z’s no-no and the game the following Tuesday against CC at Wrigley)
You never, never call for a “Blackout” from your fans. When everyone in the crowd is wearing black, it makes it look like there is no one at your ballpark.
On my standard def TV, it looks like no one is at the Cell.
Future Mrs. Fukudometer and I went jogging and did a lap around Wrigley. Saw the Dodgers taking BP and the ballhawks out. Passing the Cubs parking lot we got to see Fukudome getting in his Escalade and drive off, but then Dempster walks out, signs a dozen autographs, then keeps walking down Waveland. Mrs. Fuk and I wish him good luck them walk right behind him all the way to his house, 4 blocks west. He had a Fed Ex envelope and I can only speculate it was filled with two dozen great seats for tomorrow’s game. A bunch of Cubs fans walked by and had no idea it was Demp because he was in jeans and a t-shirt with a hat. Pretty cool to see the NL All Star Playoff Game 1 starter walking in the neighborhood.
Has anyone checked out the Dodgers schedule for the past month of September?
started out with
3 @ home against San Diego
Day off
3 @ home against Arizona
3 @ San Diego
Day off
3 @ Colorado
4 @ Pittsburgh
3 @ home against San Francisco
Day off
3 @ home against San Diego
3 @ San Francisco
Not saying anything besides that is incredibly weak.
Yeah...but for PERSCRIPTION MEDS? It's not like a person can go out and just purchase those.
It’s not a regular consumer product like chips or cell-phone service. A licensed medical doctor HAS TO WRITE A PRESCRIPTION in order for someone to even have the ability to choose to purchase one…and they can still buy a generic most of the time. It’s stupid to run commercials for prescription medications…a waste of money, time and it also makes it more difficult on doctors when trying to diagnose patients. Patients already self-diagnose themselves using WEBMD and the internet, and now they’re convinced they need what the TV tells them as well.
Are they playing duck-duck-goose?

How does the series go 5
and a hero is the game 4 starting pitcher? Are you saying you think we will be down 1-2 after 3?
californiachicagoan - September 30, 2008
Did you play baseball in college? Are you a former all-conference 2nd baseman?
I didn’t think so….Pound Sand.

5 games
I will be losing my mind if this series goes 5 games.

Me too...
But I have tickets to that game, so I’ll be losing my mind at Wrigley at least.
CubsBullsBears - September 30, 2008

The games will be low scoring! The offense must execute! Pitching will matter!
In other news, I predict the series will come down to whichever team does the best job of staying out of 2-3 counts!

Things I learned at the rally today
The Cubs are run by “Crain Kennedy”.
The only thing Governor Blago loves more than the Cubs is hearing himself talk.
Jim Belushi is pretty annoying in all but the smallest of doses.
You shouldn’t monkey around with “Go Cubs Go” – the original is by far the best.
Derrek Lee is awesome.

tony412 - September 30, 2008
Somebody needs to explain to me Jim Belushi....
To me he is little more than a loudmouth schmuck. Getting William Peterson or Bill Murray would have been cool. Belushi? Barf.
MDBNIU - September 30, 2008
I've always liked Jim Belishi personally..
movies like Mr Destiny—K-9 and a couple others were pretty doggone good—he can be a bit boorish I supposes—but he is true Cub fan from what I know.

Thinks Lou should have pulled Z- Ask Stoney if he was pitching a no-no if he should have been pulled.
Stoney has been spending too much time on the southside, apparently he still has a knee-jerk reaction to questioning Managerial decisions.
I used to love listening to Stoney- sniff it will never be the same
Andre Fonseca - September 30, 2008
Dipswitch John Kruk went OFF BIG time on that same topic the other night..
IIRC he said it would cost the Cubs the post season since they didn’t pull him after 90 pitches.
cubfever7 - September 30, 2008
Which cracked me up
b/c he’s the anti-pitch count guy.
halfblindcubbiegirl - September 30, 2008
gimme a break
a guy like Z throws 25 pitches and he can’t ever throw again…. Zs recent ‘problems’ are more mental than physical.
Andre Fonseca - September 30, 2008
If i remember his last start--he had good velocity
the firsdt inning or 2 didn’t he? If so, that renders the Kruk-ster moot (and dumb) and you correct—Z has a Yogi problem—half this game is 90% mental.
cubfever7 - September 30, 2008
Yep
He looked good the first two innings. He just lost focus in the third and then got frustrated…
John Q Freejazz - September 30, 2008

but I’m more impressed by Pujols. Especially when you think about fact that nearly HALF of the pitches thrown at Pujols weren’t strikes. And he put up the numbers he has.
halfblindcubbiegirl - September 30, 2008
And he's about to have elbow surgery.
daver - September 30, 2008
Further, that he was able to produce those numbers needing TJ surgery.
Albert carried that team and Howard had Utley.
N Oakley - September 30, 2008
...and Rollins, and Burrell, and Hamels, and... need I go on?
All Pujols had was Ludwick.
hip2bsquare - September 30, 2008
Troy Glaus had a pretty solid season, too.
.856 OPS with 27 dingers and 99 RBI.

N Oakley - September 30, 2008
And in a clutch spot

You can get Howard out, a lot. Pujols in a spot where you HAVE to go after him is scary.
halfblindcubbiegirl - September 30, 2008
I agree that Pujols should be MVP
but without Howard that Phillies wouldnt be in the playoffs this year… with Pujols the Cardinals are not in the playoffs this year… so this years MVP who is or was most valuabal to his team is Ryan Howard
SouthsideCUBSfan - September 30, 2008

Pujols should be MVP… but Howard is most valuable?

SouthsideCUBSfan - September 30, 2008
I can see an agrument for Howard

halfblindcubbiegirl - September 30, 2008

You kidnapped him, you scurvy knave! So what will it be? A chest full of bullion? A thousand barrels of grog? A gaggle of leggy lasses?

Further OT, Cedric just signed with the Bengals
N Oakley - September 30, 2008
I was sure the
Stealers would give him a shot
gwood - September 30, 2008
Cos an 0-4 team is that desperate.
neverAcquiesce - September 30, 2008
And Cedric's
legal problems are small versus the rest of the team.
N Oakley - September 30, 2008
Maybe they get a group discount.
neverAcquiesce - September 30, 2008
He fits right in, doesn't he?
cowsarecool220 - September 30, 2008
Heh
Ah the Bengals. What a mess they are.
Have fun watching Cedric run with his shoelaces tied together (step, step, fall)
halfblindcubbiegirl - September 30, 2008
The only place that fits him almost as well as the Cook County Jail

So when does Lou announce the 25 man roster?
…and who is on the bench (though not part of the 25) and who goes to Mesa?
LAcarl519 - September 30, 2008
When's the game start tomorrow?
Five minutes before that.
neverAcquiesce - September 30, 2008
i wish i knew
you were being sarcastic.
dammit lou. i need to know.
(i’m so glad the sox have to play 163 tonight… no baseball would’ve driven me nutty)

I hope I was being sarcastic too.

This isnt Lovie Smith were talking about.....I bet we hear sooner than that
JB 23 - September 30, 2008
and who is that standing over there?

Blue W - September 30, 2008
you guys know
that at this point tomorrow, I will be grabbing a scorecard, 2 Becks beers, and possibly some peanuts- in October, in Wrigley…. ahhhh
Andre Fonseca - September 30, 2008
did i mention
it will be a post season special like score card
Andre Fonseca - September 30, 2008
Becks? seriously?
I’ll be there – with Old Styles in hand.
Bill Potter - September 30, 2008
1 dollar more
and they are 20 ozs, and I dont get a headache-
Old Styles are for after a W
Andre Fonseca - September 30, 2008
Interesting points.
I just can’t bring myself to buy anything else in Wrigley.
Bill Potter - September 30, 2008
are you in 231 r 7

nope. 204 row 4

A very reputable seller in an alley.
Also sold me a funny smelling plant. I guess it’s pretty to look at, but so far all it’s done is made me giggle and eat Doritos.

Close to me
Off to the side in the recliner. Same row though. :-p
halfblindcubbiegirl - September 30, 2008
It's a good venue I hear.
No eyeline obstructions, no lines for the restroom, and the cheapest ballpark food I’ve ever seen.

Have fun with that.

Torre Live on MLB: Furcal will be in starting line up
JohnM - September 30, 2008
Starting Dodgers lineup
Furcal, martin, manny, ethier, kemp, loney, blake, dewitt
(the order of the last five might be slightly mixed up but the names are correct.)
JohnM - September 30, 2008
the LA line-up
for game 1 was announced as:
Furcal, SS
Martin, C
Ramirez, LF
Ethier, RF
Loney, 1B
Kemp, CF
DeWitt, 2B
Blake, 3B
Lowe, P
Btw, while the Dodgers announced their 25 man, teams don’t have to officially do it ’til tomorrow morning, which is possibly as long as Pinella might take. The Dodgers could also change theirs before then. Dodger fans are rejoicing that Mark Sweeney was left off the roster, he of the like 100 OPS or something.
underdog - September 30, 2008
There's no real suspense for the Cubs 25 man
except for Pie vs. Hoffpauir. Paul Sullivan reports that DeRosa and Cedeno are in despite their recent nagging injuries. Unless there’s some surprise like Howry volunteering not to pitch (yeah, right), the only thing up in the air is Felix or Micah.
JohnM - September 30, 2008
Micah was at the rally today
I wonder if that means anything….
SuperContext - September 30, 2008
seems like
Hoffpauir’s looked so good it’s hard to believe he woudn’t make it but then again he hasn’t much experience.
underdog - September 30, 2008
I just scored 2 tix for Game 1!
My connection came through at the last possible second, and I could not be more excited! Another Madison to Chicago road trip! (And I’m on fire with the Cubs right now, the last two games I attended were Z’s no-no and the game the following Tuesday against CC at Wrigley)
Schwa - September 30, 2008
Keep it going!
Shanghai Badger - September 30, 2008
OT : TBS sucks...
they are using “Stretch-O-Vision” for the pregame in “HD”. if they do this for the NLDS games, it will be the most pathetic thing I have ever seen.
ballstitch - September 30, 2008
last year
the games were in true HD, once they actually, you know, got them in HD. I can’t imagine MLB would let them screw it up like that.
Screw it up with terrible ANNOUNCING, now that’s different.
drewishdrewid - September 30, 2008
well.l..
its been going back and forth and around, right now its ok.
the only concern here is that it’s foreshadowing TBS’s potentially crappy coverage (again).
I tried to be an optimist once, but I was afraid it wouldn’t work.

Thursday's Game - and Beer Sales at Wrigley...
…does anyone know if the beer sales inside Wrigley will halt at 9:05pm as usual, or if that rule will be relaxed due to the 8:30om start?
Just curious…have not heard much about that.
derv - September 30, 2008
My guess...
Is that they’ll keep the same policy…7th inning or 9:20, whichever comes first. But who knows!?
RIOTSHIRTS.com - September 30, 2008
Announcers for tomorrow's game?
Who will we have the pleasure of listening to? Dick Stockton, Chip Caray, Bob Brenly?

Dick Stockton, Ron Darling and Tony Gwynn.

White Sox--Marketing Blunders for $500, Alex
You never, never call for a “Blackout” from your fans. When everyone in the crowd is wearing black, it makes it look like there is no one at your ballpark.
On my standard def TV, it looks like no one is at the Cell.
Josh Timmers - September 30, 2008
Idk, that looks pretty cool
and the players still know there is people.
Although blackouts don’t always work – see UGA v Bama college football game
cubsfaninatl - September 30, 2008
Sure, that way they feel at home
Because that’s what it’s like for most of the games. The White Sox games.

Red Sox fans omit the Red
They think they’re special. I always have to add the “White” when talking about the “Sox” because it confuses them.

derv - September 30, 2008
Paul Sullivan is reporting,
Pie is on the NLDS roster, Hoffpauir is out. This is due in part because of DeRosa’s injury.
Hoffpauir, Wuertz, Hart and K. Hill have been sent to Mesa to work out in case they are needed in a later series.
cowsarecool220 - September 30, 2008
I know it wasn't rational...
but I was holding out hope that Wuertz would be on it and the Howrymeister would not.

He was always “that guy” to me, no matter where he was traded.

In real life, he's a good guy.
OT: he grew up a Cubs fan.
Shanghai Badger - September 30, 2008
interesting to know
but I’m a big Cub and Twins fan….so most of the White Sox roster bugs me.
bheidge - September 30, 2008
I'm constantly impressed
at how the Twins find a way to contend every year despite losing players.
I’ve got nothing against the White Sox myself, but it’d be kinda cool to see the Twins advance. I think it’s one and done against the Rays, though.

I thought when it was hit that he should at least draw a throw
But was surprised that he kept coming home. It was closer than I expected.
Shanghai Badger - September 30, 2008
it was close
not sure why the announcers were saying “thats why Griffey is a gold glove player” a 1st baseman probably could have thrown him out from that distance

Yeah, it was pretty shallow
Shanghai Badger - September 30, 2008
Closer than "I" expected

Just met Dempster and Fukudome
Fukudometer - September 30, 2008
Hell that gave me chills
dtpollitt - September 30, 2008
Has anyone checked out the Dodgers schedule for the past month of September?
started out with
3 @ home against San Diego
Day off
3 @ home against Arizona
3 @ San Diego
Day off
3 @ Colorado
4 @ Pittsburgh
3 @ home against San Francisco
Day off
3 @ home against San Diego
3 @ San Francisco
Not saying anything besides that is incredibly weak.

Divisional play is relatively recent…4 teams from each league even more so.
And, both Chicago teams pretty much sucked for most of the latter half of the 20th Century.
Shanghai Badger - September 30, 2008
I'd be happy if they just stopped all drug ads
It’s your doctor’s job to prescribe drugs to you, not the drug companies’ job.
berselius - September 30, 2008
drug companies shouldn't be able to advertise like anyone else?
joeschmitt - September 30, 2008

It could happen…

We prolly won't see the two Chicago teams in the playoffs again for a while
