You are witness to history again tonight.
It has been 102 years since both Chicago major league baseball teams have qualified for postseason play, but tonight, the White Sox joined the Cubs at the October party by beating the Twins 1-0 in their tiebreaker game and thus becoming the champions of the AL Central.
Whether you hate the Sox, like them, or are indifferent, you have to admit that this result will make this one heck of an October in Chicago, and thus is good for the city where so many of us grew up and/or still live.
This was the seventh single-game tiebreaker playoff game in the divisional play era. Here are the other six:
Tonight's game was the third (of the seven) to be decided by one run, the first 1-0 tiebreaker playoff game ever and the first to be decided as the result of a home run since Bucky Dent beat the Red Sox in that 1978 game. Here are all the tiebreaker games and series dating back to 1946.
Congratulations to the White Sox. Who knows, maybe we'll see you in three weeks.

Congrats Sox
first
derv - September 30, 2008
Those of us outside of Chicago
probably don’t fully understand the whole hatred of the Sox thing. So I can easily say: Congrats Sox. Go Chicago.
Brett Taylor - October 1, 2008
Real Teams Clinched More Than a Week Ago
Anyway – 162 games later, it’s decided by one run.
Deserved congratulations to the Sox, but what a brutal way to go out for the Twins.
08Cubs - September 30, 2008
This is exciting
I’m hoping for a subway series
danimal15 - September 30, 2008
Weather
Anyone think the temperatures contributed to the lack of offense tonight? I ask because, well, it’ll be the same temperatures tomorrow night.
08Cubs - September 30, 2008
Yeah White Socks!
santoswoodenlegs - September 30, 2008
Now
Those are nice white socks…or maybe I’m just distracted by the filler…
snowyman28 - September 30, 2008
or lack thereof...
Scrapptastic - September 30, 2008
uh...
that’s a white sock. There’s only one. SHE’S UNBALANCED!
drewishdrewid - September 30, 2008
SWL is the one that's unbalanced!
willie mays hayes' gloves - September 30, 2008
I'm unbalanced?
santoswoodenlegs - September 30, 2008
severely
willie mays hayes' gloves - September 30, 2008
This disturbs me in so many nice ways.
Cubfansince1957 - September 30, 2008
It was a great game
That being said, I really can’t stand the Sox—starting with their management and massive inferiority complex. I had really wanted to see the Twins take it tonight—especially in that soulless pit they call the Cell. I don’t think the Sox have the horses to keep up with the Rays. Not only that, but they start in Tropicana and that is a place opposing teams go to die. I think this emotionally draining win will be the only thing they celebrate on the South side this post season. Congrats to the Sox, enjoy it while you can.
snowyman28 - September 30, 2008
Cubs and White Sox in the playoffs together
Please remain calm, the apocalypse will be here shortly.
hip2bsquare - September 30, 2008
Great for Chicago...
…baseball and I congratulate the Sox. I am not one that wants the Sox to lose, I just don’t follow them with my heart like I do the Cubs.
I have always said, it is a good thing when both teams are good, because it creates competition for each club to be better than the other.
A city series would be an incredible thing to see and I think the Sox are going to give the Rays all they can handle. In fact, I think they steal game one on Thursday.
MPH73 - September 30, 2008
Who knows, maybe we’ll see you in three weeks.
Gods, I hope not. I want this post season to be all about the Cubs.
drewishdrewid - September 30, 2008

Do NOT agree. It would be the ONLY way the Cubs could have home field advantage!!
roricka - September 30, 2008
ABSOLUTELY!!!!
sue369 - October 1, 2008
Pretty incredible to finally have both teams in the post-season
Chicago’s always been a great baseball team, nice to have some success finally.
halfblindcubbiegirl - September 30, 2008
Just heard that Furcal is starting tomorrow for L.A. That changes
things a bit if he is healthy.
willie mays hayes' gloves - September 30, 2008
and he's not....
santoswoodenlegs - September 30, 2008
I don't believe he is healthy either. One hard swing and he is out. The dodgers
would lose a roster spot if he gets hurt so this is a big gamble.
willie mays hayes' gloves - September 30, 2008
And a SS w/ back injuries
just seems like asking for trouble.
halfblindcubbiegirl - September 30, 2008
Yeah...it could limit his range and arm strength...wait! It will turn him into Ryan Theriot!
santoswoodenlegs - September 30, 2008
But he would be scraptastic!
willie mays hayes' gloves - September 30, 2008
don't you need to be a small white guy to be considered scrappy?
halfblindcubbiegirl - September 30, 2008
Well...he would be "gritty" in that case.
Bump Bailey - September 30, 2008
The scrappy moniker can be extended to small non-white
players if said player is injured and still attemping to play. In which said player is sacrificing his health for the good of the team.(Rule 27a of the Scraptastic Players Guide)
willie mays hayes' gloves - September 30, 2008
Thanks for that
I must’ve misplaced my Player’s Guide.

nji232 - September 30, 2008
I was kinda hoping for the Twins...
Maybe I’d actually get to a Series game involving the Cubs. And frankly, after the boorishness of Sox fans, both in general and specifically regarding the Cubs, I cannot bring myself to care about them at all.
I don’t hate them, I just don’t care.
MN exile - September 30, 2008
Am I just biased or does anyone
have problems taking the numbers of the Dodgers really seriously?
Of course they have good ERA’s, they play in the NL West where everyone is kinda stinky.
Not that I’m taking them lightly, but the numbers seem misleading to me.
halfblindcubbiegirl - September 30, 2008
They are...look at their pitching home/road splits.
santoswoodenlegs - September 30, 2008
Oh yeah...and look at who they actally played the last month.
santoswoodenlegs - September 30, 2008
I've been looking for a park adjusted ERA kinda thing
But I haven’t seen one yet.
Actually. I just want the games to start & to hopefully have someone OTHER than Dick Stockton behind the mic. He makes me sleepy.
halfblindcubbiegirl - September 30, 2008
Dick Stockton kills the joy
JohnM - October 1, 2008
Their pitching numbers...
…are definately overblown (just look at the home & road splits). What worries me a bit is they don’t rely on the homerun to score runs, they put the ball in play and they will pressure the defense by running. I say this because the weather/wind is going to take the power game away from both teams and you will see some low scoring games.
Now watch, tomorrow’s game will be 9-7.
MPH73 - September 30, 2008
Tomorrows game will be 6-3 Cubs....unless Howry is on the roster and gets in the game.
Then it will be 6-5 Cubs.
santoswoodenlegs - September 30, 2008
is that your final offer?
drewishdrewid - September 30, 2008
from the basement to your computer
santoswoodenlegs - September 30, 2008
rock on.
drewishdrewid - September 30, 2008
The Howry factor is extended to 3 runs during the playoffs. The Cubs would
need to be ahead by at least 4 runs when he enters the game.
willie mays hayes' gloves - September 30, 2008
True
but their defense ranked 15th in the Bigs & 10th in the NL.
We can do the small ball stuff too.
halfblindcubbiegirl - September 30, 2008
I know...
…and I think the Cubs are a better overall club. They just need to play their game and not try and do too much (especially with weather conditions we will see).
MPH73 - September 30, 2008
Yeah
I agree. Lets just play the games.
Preferably w/ no Dick Stockton. Who is absolutely brutal.
halfblindcubbiegirl - September 30, 2008

All the good teams have won a World Series in the past 100 years.
DrCrawdad - September 30, 2008

santoswoodenlegs - September 30, 2008

if you were one of those paranoid Sox fans that also believes we faked the moon landing to cover up the Kennedy assassination?
znohitter - September 30, 2008
Beautiful night in Chicago!
Two teams winning their divisions, playing in the post-season!
Incredible! Never thought I’d see it.
Good luck Cubbies!
DrCrawdad - September 30, 2008
We don't need luck...we have good players.
santoswoodenlegs - September 30, 2008
Twist a positive into an attack...
… and I’ve heard those types of boasts from Cubbie fans in the past, heck even last year. How’d that turn out for you?
Good night. And best wishes to decent Cubbie fans, ones who don’t resort to smears, slim and personal attacks.
DrCrawdad - September 30, 2008
Wait...there are Cub fans that don't do those things?
I hate those people.
santoswoodenlegs - September 30, 2008

no, see
only one team won a division tonight.
The Cubs won their division with over a week to go.
drewishdrewid - October 1, 2008
Dude
Seriously. Why are you doing this? Go celebrate a great game from your team! Danks is really good.
halfblindcubbiegirl - September 30, 2008
It was 1907 and 1908....back when you could be out past sundown in South Chicago
and not get mugged, raped, shot, or solicited. Good times.
santoswoodenlegs - September 30, 2008
Obviously you never read the reports of
what happened during the World’s fair here. Hundreds of people came up missing or dead. Many were suspected to be sold into slavery and shipped to other countries.
willie mays hayes' gloves - September 30, 2008
Wasn't the World's Fair in 1893?
znohitter - September 30, 2008

santoswoodenlegs - September 30, 2008
It never takes much...

DrCrawdad - September 30, 2008
especially our members who are black....like willie.
The World’s Fair hates black people.
santoswoodenlegs - September 30, 2008
Area of town = racism?
Who’s launching into “latent racist taunts” here?
halfblindcubbiegirl - September 30, 2008
Racial? Where the hell did that come from? That event was in the
late 1800’s. Chicago was a tough town. the missing people were from all over the world. You guys have latent racist thoughts on your brain. Chill out racism wasn’t part of my rant.
willie mays hayes' gloves - September 30, 2008
I know it wasn't.
halfblindcubbiegirl - September 30, 2008
It was not addressed to you...
… but Santoswoodenlegs.
I’ve been hearing those types of bigoted remarks for years. And that’s exactly what that was. And that’s usually the response, the, “Who me? My best friend in black…”
DrCrawdad - September 30, 2008
Are you suggesting that only black people mug, rape, shoot, or solicit?
I’m the racist?
santoswoodenlegs - September 30, 2008
Enough of this for me...
… you posted a bigoted comment. Twist and turn this to your pleasure.
You replied to my first post with a personal attack, “Hi dummy!” Good night bigot!
DrCrawdad - September 30, 2008
Good night dummy!
santoswoodenlegs - September 30, 2008
I must have missed that history lesson. i didn't think
that SWL was referring to blacks doing the mugging and raping. He knows I am black and he wouldn’t lay that shit on me, would you SWL?
willie mays hayes' gloves - September 30, 2008
You know I would never talk out the side of my neck to you willie...

Please get it over with and ban this buffoon… it’s all too clear he’s only here to troll. Please put aside your personal relationship with the crayfish and look at it objectively.
60613 - October 1, 2008
irrelevant.
drewishdrewid - September 30, 2008
no...it means something...
santoswoodenlegs - September 30, 2008
perhaps.
but I find it irrelevant. This is NOW. This is 2008. 2007 doesn’t matter, 2006, 2005, whatever. THIS YEAR. And in THIS YEAR, the Cubs dominated their division and their league, and clinched days ago, whereas the White Sox struggled and had to play a special game just to inch their way over the line.
drewishdrewid - September 30, 2008
Cheese and crackers...
… with those sour grapes?
DrCrawdad - September 30, 2008
sour grapes?
my team won 97 games. My team is favored throughout the playoffs. My team is beloved throughout the country, and my team doesn’t talk smack about the opposing team and then get swept.
Get over yourself. Your a little man with a little team, little manager and little GM. I didn’t start to despise the White Sox till you came here.
drewishdrewid - October 1, 2008
Now that's funny!
DrCrawdad - October 2, 2008
you like to focus on the past.
this is the future. Get with the program, Krabby Man.
drewishdrewid - September 30, 2008
but they did in a WS in the past....you can look it up...in a history book.
santoswoodenlegs - September 30, 2008
sure.
but that was a different team. Same name. What was that name again?
drewishdrewid - September 30, 2008
Cue Journey...
please no.
N Oakley - September 30, 2008
Okay, the Sox are in (excitement lacking in my house).
How do they match up with the Rays?
N Oakley - September 30, 2008
Rays in 4
halfblindcubbiegirl - September 30, 2008
I'm thinking the same
I remember the "98 and the Cubs not having anything left for the Braves.
N Oakley - September 30, 2008
Well, thats part of it
but the Rays can score in lots of different ways. The White Sox seem to ONLY score on the HR.
halfblindcubbiegirl - September 30, 2008
Rays in 2
santoswoodenlegs - September 30, 2008
Carl Crawford is back. Rays in 1.
willie mays hayes' gloves - September 30, 2008
pretty badly.
ten games in the season, they won 4, splitting them between Tampa and the Cellblock.
drewishdrewid - September 30, 2008
I'd be perfectly happy if the Sox could eliminate the Rays.
Should the northsiders keep advancing, I don’t have fond memories of the interleague matchup.
N Oakley - September 30, 2008
It's not as bad as it looks
Across the 10 games, the Sox had a better ERA and more runs per game . . . the only major stat they lost in was the W-L (which, of course, is the one that matters).
madcow256 - October 1, 2008
so they played
worse than they should have? To me that’s WORSE than it looks, not better than it looks.
drewishdrewid - October 1, 2008
I used to root for the Sox just because my brother is a Sox fan.
Then I read about all kinds of nasty stuff that Sox fans did during the Cubs’ run in ‘03 (cheering for the Cubs’ opposition). That soured me a lot on the Sox and their fans.
If you’re a genuine baseball fan (def: one who roots for his team and doesn’t root for someone else to lose – note: this definition does not apply to those who root for the Cardinals to lose ;-D), congratulations to you, and I wish you the best of luck in the playoffs (unless you meet us, in which case, I hope the ground opens up and swallows both you and your team).
Have fun with it.
Cubfansince1957 - September 30, 2008
Congrats to the Sox
They did what they had to do and pulled it out. I’d be lying if I said i was a fan but I’m also not one of those people who get charged up seeing the other team lose.
bluekoolaide - September 30, 2008
What a game.
The lowest score tiebreaker ever. Congratulations, White Sox. You can go back to losing.
Fraggin Judge - September 30, 2008

willie mays hayes' gloves - September 30, 2008
Does anyone else think
That the whole champagne & celebration spilling out onto the field and fans thing, simply for making the playoffs is a bit ridiculous? Dudes, I know you’re excited, but there’s three more rounds to go before any of this means anything. I don’t remember the Atlanta Braves hosing down Turner Field 15 times in a row.
Especially ridiculous for the White Sox, who just won the whole freakin’ enchilada within the last 5 years. For Pete’s sake, act like you’ve been there before.
jmomls - September 30, 2008
Yeah, ridiculous...
DrCrawdad - September 30, 2008
You're still here? LOL.
santoswoodenlegs - September 30, 2008
It's ridiculous when anyone does it
Including the Cubs, who were just here last year. Save the champagne for when you actually make it to the WS.
jmomls - September 30, 2008
Yes
because celebrating accomplishing a goal is ridiculous.
Seriously, you’re upset a team made a deal about going to October?
There are so many more things to be annoyed about in the world.
halfblindcubbiegirl - September 30, 2008
Yeah...like when the idiots at Taco Bell mess up my order when I go through the drive through.
I want to choke a kitten when they do that.
santoswoodenlegs - September 30, 2008
Did I say I was upset?
No. I only said it was ridiculous.
Same with untucking your shirts and jumping in unison at home plate like a bunch of sissy girls when you win a game in August.
jmomls - September 30, 2008
You sure came across as being pissy about it
But. Whatever.
halfblindcubbiegirl - September 30, 2008

It’s common. I think you can get a prescription for it.
jmomls - September 30, 2008

santoswoodenlegs - September 30, 2008

You know what else is ridiculous, when you go to a ballgame at one of these modern ballparks and they blast idiotic music for every single play.
“here’s the pitch…ball 4” [idiot sound man cues up Blur’s “Song 2” at 180 decibels to celebrate base on balls].

halfblindcubbiegirl - September 30, 2008
HBCG's volley puts jmomls on the defensive!
santoswoodenlegs - September 30, 2008
Crawdad?
OH, I see, there’s one other guy who disagrees with your love of moronic celebrations at being one of the many, many teams who squeaks into the playoffs so I must be that guy, too.
jmomls - September 30, 2008
and jmomls charges the net!
santoswoodenlegs - September 30, 2008
Many many teams who goes to the play offs?
Who knew 8 was “many, many teams”.
Look. Celebrating a GOAL is a good thing. If you do’t like it, don’t watch. I happen to think seeing guys ENJOY what they’re doing is a great thing. Its fun to see who does what. And I’m looking forward to seeing my team do it about 3 more times (God willing) and you can be pissy about it if you want, but I’m gonna have a blast.
halfblindcubbiegirl - September 30, 2008
30 teams in MLB, right?
That is more than 1 in 4. Big. Deal.
“Oooh, we’re the Brewers, we are the 2008 NL Wild Card team! Yay! Hang the pennant, drop the confetti, man the Moet cannons! Immortalize Ryan Braun in marble!”
jmomls - September 30, 2008
you must be a Braves fan....

jmomls - September 30, 2008
So if you were on this team...
you would be dressed and out of the clubhouse before the camera’s were allowed in…right.
santoswoodenlegs - September 30, 2008
Nah
I’d be happy, but focused on shitting the bed in 3 games straight like I did last year.
jmomls - September 30, 2008

Hah,
Those dolts would’ve been kicked out of school by then.
I’m glad that the low self-esteem craze has reached professional sports, though. This is the same stupidity that brought us “graduation ceremonies” from kindergarten.
jmomls - September 30, 2008
So winning a division title is tantamount to passing Kindergarten?
santoswoodenlegs - September 30, 2008
No
Celebrating with champagne is like having a ceremony for graduating from kindergarten, because you’ve got 3 more steps to go before you have really accomplished anything in each case.
Do try to keep up, 007.
jmomls - September 30, 2008

is hard to do….regardless of what happens in the post-season (which involves a metric ass-load of luck)…Lou has shown he deserves to stick around. Honestly…you want the press to hound the team about the # 100, the goat, the black cat, Durham, Garvey, Clark, Bartman AND Lou’s job security?
santoswoodenlegs - September 30, 2008
Reed's hat flip catch
was only the 10th best play of the regular season according to Sportscenter.
Lame.
halfblindcubbiegirl - September 30, 2008
Well, he didn't do it in New York...that's like -4 spots right there...
add the fact that none of the ESPN guys actually know who Reed Johnson is…and you have the logic behind the ranking.
santoswoodenlegs - September 30, 2008
I know
but still. Lame. :-P
halfblindcubbiegirl - September 30, 2008
Yes, but Zambrano's no hitter beat Jon Lester's
on the list. Obviously an editing mistake.
And on another note, how about the STUPID segment that O’Reilly guy did on a “Cubs Curse”. I couldn’t watch it- ff TIVO- but I hate when they do that.
epcub - September 30, 2008
Why does ESPN have it in for the Cubs?
Both on radio and on SC/Baseball Tonight, they’ve really been getting the milage out of the whole ‘when will they choke’ thing.
I guess they don’t know what to do with no Yanks/BoSox angle this year.
znohitter - September 30, 2008
They won't stop until we win it all....
at that point, they will have to start actually learning stuff about our team/fans/players/traditions and begin real reporting. Until then….get used to it.
santoswoodenlegs - September 30, 2008
I just find it annoying...
that so many shows do more self-aggrandizement and prognostication than actual sports analysis. I don’t care what you think the outcome will be based on your hunches or how your knee feels, just give me some good analysis and matchups.
znohitter - September 30, 2008
They still won't stop then. Those
simple minds don’t have much to ramble on about since the yankees and mets are out of it. If the bosox get bounced, they will close up shop.
willie mays hayes' gloves - September 30, 2008
The fallback without NYY
Is to hope for a LAD/LAA WS. Bigger market than Chicago.
jmomls - September 30, 2008
How many of those people actually watch baseball?
Seriously. I never really hear about fanatical fans of any California team. Maybe that’s because I’m in Iowa, but still….
znohitter - September 30, 2008
There aren't many "baseball fans" in California....
lots and lots of “sports fans” though.
santoswoodenlegs - September 30, 2008
Riiight...
those are the people that “can’t watch baseball on TV,” right? And then they go to a game and spend half of it on their cell phone complaining that nothing is happening and the other half wandering the park NOT PAYING ATTENTION TO THE GAME??
I don’t like those people.
znohitter - September 30, 2008
They're also the same ones that portray US
as the “just there to party” types.
halfblindcubbiegirl - September 30, 2008
and we all can agree...
that “partys” are stupid and meaningless unless you’re celebrating something REAL.
santoswoodenlegs - September 30, 2008
Y'mean like making the playoffs?
znohitter - September 30, 2008
Please enlighten me
Does every NHL or NBA team that makes the playoffs spray champagne all over the first few rows?
Seriously, I don’t watch that crap, so please tell me whether they do or don’t.
jmomls - September 30, 2008
I dunno.
I watch baseball. Then I mourn for five months. Then there is more baseball.
znohitter - September 30, 2008
It's different
It’s different because they are just one of 16 teams to make it and unless they win their division they haven’t won anything.
puckishcubsfan - October 1, 2008
more NHL and NBA teams MAKE
the playoffs than don’t make the playoffs.
drewishdrewid - October 1, 2008
Yeah. like my divorce.
willie mays hayes' gloves - September 30, 2008
Real
I’m so sick of this. Finishing a hard fought battle over 162 games and finishing on top is real.
And it has no impact on how they do in the playoffs. I think there are people that actually think the Cubs got swept last year because they partied after finshing the division. That is the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard.
puckishcubsfan - October 1, 2008
That idea was floated this morning on the SCORE
by Jessie Rodgers. I think it’s another excuse for getting you butt kicked and I don’t buy it.
willie mays hayes' gloves - October 1, 2008
No, that was Barrack Obama
He probably tooted a few lines in celebration for his beloved White Sox tonight.
Then he dumped a bottle of Cris on Chelle.
jmomls - September 30, 2008
You can't blame a brother for partying.
willie mays hayes' gloves - September 30, 2008
He called up Larry Sinclair
Cuz Chelle wasn’t in the mood.
jmomls - September 30, 2008
You've spent 30% of your total comments on this blog in this thread alone...
and each is getting more dumb than the last.
santoswoodenlegs - September 30, 2008
A few more comments
and I’ll be just as dumb as you.
Then we can get matching sweaters.
jmomls - September 30, 2008
Good news...I picked ours out already...
santoswoodenlegs - September 30, 2008
No, I prefer yours, in the picture
It makes your neck look less pencil-like.
jmomls - September 30, 2008
cheap
cheap win, all they do is rely on long ball. go rays
Cubbinstrongsince86 - September 30, 2008
You know what else is ridiculous
When a dude gets a bloop single and points to the sky, you know, cuz Jesus helped him get that broken bat slap shot over the second baseman’s head.
jmomls - September 30, 2008
Or when a dude gets a sack
And then dances around, because that five yard loss ten minutes into the first quarter JUST SEALED THE GAME, BAB-EEE, YE-AAHHHHHHHHARGH.
jmomls - September 30, 2008
Or when an annoying poster starts asking eveyone if they don't like stuff...
Hey…you know what I hate…when a guy does that one thing and then is all….blah blah blah.
santoswoodenlegs - September 30, 2008
I only asked the one question
and idiots like you continued to comment.
jmomls - September 30, 2008
you've proceeded to ask 2 more....or do you not see your last 2 posts?
santoswoodenlegs - September 30, 2008
Anyone here talking baseball?
I just saw this article by Carrie (few hours old now), but it sounds like DeRosa is gonna be fine.
I just don’t see this game being all that close. The Cubs have been better all year, and it will show. Manny might get a few good knocks, but Dempster is M-O-N-E-Y at home:
14-3 in 20 starts, 2.86 ERA, 6 HR.
Meanwhile, Lowe has been his typical self on the road:
5-6 in 17 starts, 4.42 ERA, 8 HR.
I see something like 5-2 or 4-1.
Dan
dtpollitt - September 30, 2008
Calling a player M-O-N-E-Y is ridiculous...and using excessive hyphens is also ridiculous.
santoswoodenlegs - September 30, 2008
I think its ridiculous to call things ridiculous.
halfblindcubbiegirl - September 30, 2008
Now you're just being ridiculous.
santoswoodenlegs - September 30, 2008
You both are freaking ridiculous!
willie mays hayes' gloves - September 30, 2008
halfblindcubbiegirl - September 30, 2008
I apologize, SWL
Just trying to turn this baseball blog back into discussion of…baseball.

Is that what this is? A baseball blog? When does the season start?
willie mays hayes' gloves - September 30, 2008

Cubbinstrongsince86 - September 30, 2008
not as ridiculous
as if they had little roller-skates on bottom of each prong.
I am sad, however, that I cannot get the picture to scroll up.
drewishdrewid - October 1, 2008
We were just discussing the ridiculousness of excessive celebrations after clinching a division title.
santoswoodenlegs - September 30, 2008
That's ridiculous.
willie mays hayes' gloves - September 30, 2008
I was at Wrigley for the game clincher
And the celebration was the highlight of my Cubfandom thus far. It was so exciting – hugging strangers, high-fiving each and every Cubs fan, hanging around the park for an hour inside and another two hours outside…it was great. Such a different vibe than 2007 or 2003.
Dan
dtpollitt - September 30, 2008
You and all those people are ridiculous....and so is this guy.
santoswoodenlegs - September 30, 2008
Look ma, a cheesehead!
willie mays hayes' gloves - September 30, 2008
jmomls is gonna be upset
you shouldn’t be posting his picture like this.
halfblindcubbiegirl - September 30, 2008
it's ok.
SWL checked with his mom before he left in the morning.
drewishdrewid - October 1, 2008
so jealous you were there
what a great day that was. heres to a few more of increasing ridiculouness.
halfblindcubbiegirl - September 30, 2008
I think Lowe's going to depend on the home plate umpire a lot
if we stay patient and he’s not getting that low strike on his sinker, we can hit him.
halfblindcubbiegirl - September 30, 2008
Well I'd like to think
that waiting for the non-sinker won’t be too hard, considering we led MLB in walks and have seen quite an increase in our patience.
dtpollitt - September 30, 2008
I'd like to think that too
but we need to do it in the playoffs too. And last year they turned into complete hacks.
halfblindcubbiegirl - September 30, 2008
I think aces like Webb do that to you...
dtpollitt - September 30, 2008
not this year
santoswoodenlegs - September 30, 2008
True
but Livan Hernandez?
halfblindcubbiegirl - September 30, 2008
Livan...maybe...
…but DOUG DAVIS!! AGH!
dtpollitt - September 30, 2008
Yeah
What an ugly “series” that was.
halfblindcubbiegirl - September 30, 2008
He just got caught up in the wave. Have you heard of the blind squirrel theory?
willie mays hayes' gloves - September 30, 2008
I thought I told those squirrels to stop telling the

About to head out and teach some 7th/8th Grade Algebra
Then heading to catch the first game of the day. Then some fellow teachers are coming over to watch the game of the day. Cubs and Dodgers.
Lets get that first win today!!!

Good News
Mike and Mike both picked the Dodgers!
No kiss of death from them guys!

Don't Forget Reggie's HR Against Boston
That 1978 Bucky Dent HR against the Red Sox is the most remembered HR of that tiebreaker game. Don’t forget Reggie Jackson hit a 2-run HR in that game to pad the Yankees lead before the Red Sox made a failed comeback and lost 5-4.
memphiscub - October 1, 2008
Exciting times
The banter above is the reason I don’t want a “red line series”, or whatever the media will come up with. This city will not be safe.
Congrats to the Sox, as my roommate says they have kept it interesting all year, something very few thought was possible. It will probably be a short series with the Rays but it will be fun for the city for a week.
slocs55 - October 1, 2008
I'd like it to happen
I’d like it to happen but after the Cubs have one won too. Maybe in 09 after we win this year?
puckishcubsfan - October 1, 2008
Thome
Congrats to this Cub fan for his GWH. Congrats to the Sox; a lot of friends and relatives are Sox fans, so no disparaging words here.
Al, your blog today brought back some memories:
I was a HS sophomore in `69.
I went to Game 2 in `84. I think it was Terry Kennedy that flew out to the wall for the final out. Man, we really thought we had that one locked up.
In `89, I went to the only game they won.
thermal54 - October 1, 2008
10-11-03
Al, I read your blog post from this date. I felt exactly as you did…I had absolutely zero confidence they would win Game 7, even with Wood on the mound. To complicate my thoughts even further, I had to teach a class here at work the next morning. I’m sure I must’ve sounded like a blithering idiot at times on 10-12-03.
thermal54 - October 1, 2008
That date should be 10-14-03
I guess I’ve tried to erase it from my memory over the years. Heh.
thermal54 - October 1, 2008
Watching last night's game
I realized something. I always like to watch baseball, no matter who is playing. Normally, I can’t stomach the White Sox but I actually enjoyed the game. I realized that it’s not the Sox that I can’t stand, it’s Harrelson. He is without doubt the worst, most annoying announcer I have ever heard. I would rather listen to a room full of Joe Morgans than that clown. It’s a relief to know that I can watch the Rays/Sox series without throwing up.
Congrats to the Sox. Now find a decent play by play man.
That being said, I really don’t see how the city of Chicago will withstand a Cubs/Sox WS. There won’t be enough room in the jails for all of the Sox fans.
