They’ve been sucking it up almost as bad as the Cubs. But lets be honest, the Brewers ARE going to make the NL playoffs. Certainly Ned Yost understands that. Maybe it is a case of him trying like hell to get Eric Gagne sorted out given the general lousiness of their bullpen. They need a semi-good Gagne in the playoffs. …Peavy has been better than Sheets lately. How awesome would it be if they pull it out tonight, the Cubs turn it around tomorrow and end up with a 6 game lead.
There is a character within a character called "Simple Jack"
which essentially is a guy with an intellectual disability, and a complete mockery of “retarded” people. As a special education teacher, I was both offended and could see their reason for making fun of the character – it was a mockery of Forrest Gump, I Am Sam, RainMan, etc. But my colleagues aren’t as understanding, it’s been a big ordeal down here at KU, the #1 ranked SPED program in the country.
Nate Silver, creator of BP…has applied many of the same regression models and a lot of the baseball-like models to politics. My buddy just turned me on to it the other night, and I’ve been spending just about every waking hour reading it. It seems pretty apolitical to me, and gives a good vibe of the pulse of politics.
Just thought it was neat to see some baseball statistics philosophy applied to a different field. Not trying to start a political discussion.
It's interesting, and I think a lot of it's solid.
At the same time, though, it’s really cutting into his work with BP, and they lost most of their other good analysts to teams (Woolner now works for the Indians, Fox for the Pirates). Part of the brain drain at BP.
a Theriot blunder or a Soriano dropped fly ball will be this year’s Steve Bartman. Sure hope the rest of the team is so good they negate both possibilities.
Awful hitting (sub .200) SS on the 1968 Tigers. Mickey Stanley was moved from CF to SS for the World Series, and Oyler came on late for defensive purposes. But if Detroit can win a championship with that kind of weak link in the lineup…
They played hard and kept CC from getting a win. Tomorrow is Peavy Vs Sheets so a pretty
good match up. The ultimate irony is that Cubs cast off Jody Gerut who was hitting up a storm is injured , might have made a difference if he could have started.

derv - September 5, 2008
At least...
You’re not a Brewers fan. Watching the Cubs get shellacked by Cincy and then not being able to put away the Padres with your best starter out there?
Ouch.
Hilary Lee - September 5, 2008
good point
derv - September 5, 2008
ouch is right
i can’t imagine how frustring this is for the brewer fans… to see the cubs skidding and then seeing yourself lose ground.
halfblindcubbiegirl - September 5, 2008
If they don't win this game
They can blame yost for leaving CC in during the 130 pitch blow out….
That is the only reason that CC was pulled tonight at 105…
TheRiot Police - September 5, 2008
but the Cubs game got hopeless fairly quickly
Madison Cub Fan - September 5, 2008

halfblindcubbiegirl - September 5, 2008
good chance for Friars tomorrow...
…Peavy has been better than Sheets lately. How awesome would it be if they pull it out tonight, the Cubs turn it around tomorrow and end up with a 6 game lead.

Hilary Lee - September 5, 2008
I Remember Salomon Torres
in 1993 the Giants sent him out on the last day of the season, needing to beat LA to tie for the division. He got creamed and the Giants lost 12-1.

2) Hitters are in an awful slump, maybe trying to do too much to pull out of it.

Downey Jr. In Black Face
Did you find it offensive? How did they handle that part of it?
CaliCub - September 5, 2008
There is a character within a character called "Simple Jack"
which essentially is a guy with an intellectual disability, and a complete mockery of “retarded” people. As a special education teacher, I was both offended and could see their reason for making fun of the character – it was a mockery of Forrest Gump, I Am Sam, RainMan, etc. But my colleagues aren’t as understanding, it’s been a big ordeal down here at KU, the #1 ranked SPED program in the country.
And Downey was brilliant.

cwyers - September 5, 2008
K well check this out.

Dan
dtpollitt - September 5, 2008
It's interesting, and I think a lot of it's solid.
At the same time, though, it’s really cutting into his work with BP, and they lost most of their other good analysts to teams (Woolner now works for the Indians, Fox for the Pirates). Part of the brain drain at BP.
cwyers - September 5, 2008
I think I remember reading somewhere
that Nate didn’t want to close himself off to “only” baseball. I may be wrong.

Eckstein's not a bad player...

He's an organ replacement recipient too
Met him in person one night at Angels Stadium. Nice guy, I have to give him that.

a Theriot blunder or a Soriano dropped fly ball will be this year’s Steve Bartman. Sure hope the rest of the team is so good they negate both possibilities.

And let me take this opportunity to ask.
Theriot, past three years: .291/.362/.373
Theriot, 2008: .311/.390/.365
And I think that predates tonight’s wonderous 0fer. Can we put to bed this idea that Theriot is any good at hitting baseballs?
cwyers - September 5, 2008
his slugging is underwhelming
but really… if you don’t have a GREAT arm, can’t you at least be accurate?
i mean…. i can’t even imagine how bad he’d seem if Derrek weren’t a 1000 feet tall.
halfblindcubbiegirl - September 5, 2008
Our Generation's Ray Oyler
Awful hitting (sub .200) SS on the 1968 Tigers. Mickey Stanley was moved from CF to SS for the World Series, and Oyler came on late for defensive purposes. But if Detroit can win a championship with that kind of weak link in the lineup…

Milwaukee has burned the bullpen, tho.

drewishdrewid - September 5, 2008
105....
TheRiot Police - September 5, 2008
that's not going to serve him well in the long run.
And they’ve gone through four pitchers from the pen. Tomorrow should be good.
drewishdrewid - September 5, 2008
105?
CaliCub - September 5, 2008
106 per ESPN.com

Bill Potter - September 5, 2008
Are we 3.5 up now?
dtpollitt - September 5, 2008
4
with their loss yesterday, we were up to 5 up.
drewishdrewid - September 5, 2008
Which is really misleading...
…and makes it sound a lot more nervewracking than it is. The Brewers are eight games behind the Cubs.
cwyers - September 5, 2008
I know. I've always hated this.
dtpollitt - September 5, 2008
How so, el jefe?
CaliCub - September 5, 2008
The Brewers have to win eight more games than the Cubs in order to have an identical record.
cwyers - September 5, 2008
Not To Be Dense, But
if Milwaukee wins eight more games, then wouldn’t they be four games better than the Cubs?
CaliCub - September 5, 2008
I've learned when someone says:
“Not to be ______, but…”
It usually means they are.
dtpollitt - September 5, 2008
I hope you're not like this with your students!
CaliCub - September 5, 2008
The Cubs are 29 games above .500.
The Brewers are 21 games above .500.
Sorry, I worded that incorrectly. The Brewers have to make up eight games on the Cubs, either via Cubs loss or Brewers win.
If the Brewers win eight straight and the Cubs lose eight straight, yeah, then we’d be four back.
cwyers - September 5, 2008
thx
Was imagining the last scenario (Brewers win 8 straight, Cubs lose eight straight).

Okay, everybody, go ahead and put your shoelaces and razor blades in the collection bin over there.
You can get them back after the next Cubs win.

no announcement about high buildings seeming inviting?
halfblindcubbiegirl - September 5, 2008
well, the padres played them tough
and the next two nights, the matchups might favor them. 3 of 4 was my prediction, this one I figured the Brewers would get.
so many damn blown chances, tho
Shanghai Badger - September 5, 2008
I've always wondered about ...
how in baseball, all the extra innings function like the 9th inning. It gives a huuuuuge advantage to the home team imo…
Hilary Lee - September 5, 2008
baseball is the one sport
where theres a real advantage to playing at home.
halfblindcubbiegirl - September 5, 2008
Well give the Padres credit
They played hard and kept CC from getting a win. Tomorrow is Peavy Vs Sheets so a pretty
good match up. The ultimate irony is that Cubs cast off Jody Gerut who was hitting up a storm is injured , might have made a difference if he could have started.
Doggie Stalker - September 5, 2008

Can I be the first to blame it on the curse of Phil Rogers?
Don’t worry, Cubs fans: Playoffs are secure
