This one comes courtesy of a new BCB member, Herschel Krustofsky. And no, you don't get any clues. Look closely at the photo.

Name this Cub!

Tony LaRussa?
that was my guess too
It does look a bit like TLR, doesn't it?

But no.

Bill Bonham (sans stache)?

Closer, but no.
closer as in...

looks or time period?

closer as in a most awesome reliever...

11 career saves!!! including a whopping 6 in 1973, good for third on the Cubs that year…

Gotta be 70s, right?

I mean, look at that Han Solo haircut.

OK, that's a very good guess.

Use that as a clue.

Was it? I was just making a funny.

Well, here’s the 77 team:

Calm yourselves, ladies.

Don’t see him…

Lou Piniella

Don’t know why he would have been wearing a Cubs hat, but it sure looks like him.

It does, a little.

But no, it’s not him, either. Here’s Lou as a player:

besides the hair, doesn't really look that different now
a very clean cut dave laroche?

http://www.checkoutmycards.com/CardImages/Cards/017/658/03F.jpg

got that same hazy stare off to the right look in their eyes

Wow, that's an eerie looking photo.
Laroche looks like

the bass player from 80s band Husker Du

http://www.kevchino.com/graffix/bandphotos/Huskerdu_bp.jpg

A young

Paul Popovich?

He wasn't a Cub, but....

….Robert DiNiro? I know he played a Yankee in “Bang the Drum Slowly,” but I suppose he could have worn a Cubs cap while they were filming it.

Curse you, Krusty! This is a tough one!

How about

Roger Metzger? Only played 1 game as a Cub.

Scot Thompson?
Joe Pepitone?
That's what I was going to guess!

But the hair ain’t long enough…. :-)

Neither are the sideburns.
and my backup guess would be... Jack Aker

of Jack Aker Baseball fame?

I think he played Jango Fett.

Jango Fett is Bobby Abreu
So far... all interesting guesses, but none correct!
John Cusack?

Well, if they ever make a movie about this guy's life, Cusack could play him.

But no, it’s not Cusack.

When I saw the picture

my first thought was Cusack as well.

Can't be Cusack

Cuz as we all know,he’s Buck Weaver

Lee Elia?

Coming out to the ballpark instead of working?

Dennis Eckersley?
Nope.

Clue: before Eck’s time.

Prince Charles?

I have no clue been wracking my brain.

I think it’s actually a picture of a young Al.

Al by the way what is Al short for? My family has zillions of Als where the full name is different so was curious. It’s just my boring offseason snowcovered Saturday musing.

He'll never tell.

n/t

He's right.

I’ll never tell.

Wild guess

Manny Trillo.

Steve Swisher?
Swisher

Remember when the Cubs were so bad he was our all star rep?

It's not Dave Roberts

but the Cub pitcher from 1977 and 1978 died this week. I’d put it up as a fanshot, but every time I post an obituary, someone criticizes me for saying he “died” rather than “he is no longer with us” or some other vague euphemism that makes it sound like he was just traded.

Roberts had lung cancer. He was 64. May he rest in peace.

it's already up....
OK, then I missed it

Good thing I didn’t post it then.

Wow. I completely missed that

From what I remember, he was a pretty good pitcher for the Padres and Astros in the early 70’s. Not so much by the time he got to the Cubs though.

Sorry to hear it. 64 is too young.

Bill Caudill

Is that close?

It's not Larry Bowa, is it?
Scratch Dave Rader

something about the way he’s posing tells me he was a pitcher.

Yeah

I’m thinking pitcher, sometime between 1967 and 1974.

And Possibly a Lefty

based on the direction he’s looking.

I need the Bill Caudill

answer. I gots the Photo with the mustache, can’t seem to paste it here

Fred Norman?

I think that’s probably wrong though. Kind of looks like him though.

A little bit.

But it’s not him.

Mike Garman?
Garman

had a big ‘fro, didn’t he?

Yeah, I think you're right

But I’m starting to get desperate!

Not even close to Garman.

However, I will add that there is a clue in this photo.
Let me guess...they wore the same uniform?

Your killing us!

LOL

Look closely at both photos.

Danny Breeden?

This is a tough one!

Bill Stoneman??
Ray Newman?

He was a lefty.

Randy Newman

He wasn’t a shorty

Just plain Newman

on Seinfeld.

Herschel Krustofsky??
I know...

I was smiling about that one.

His nickname must be “Krusty”?

Its Bill Hands

It's not Bill Hands...

But look! The Minnesota Twins playing in Wrigley! (Boy, Topps’ pre-photoshop cards were bad)

That is priceless

n/t

The Twins did play in Wrigley...

… 30 years later.

But apparently, Hands pitched for them there in a HOME game (white Twins uniform). Amazing.

Looks like Mark Shera

The actor from 70s TV show S.W.A.T. I don’t know how to post pictures yet but here is a link to a photo galleryhttp://www.zelmak.net/peggy/markshera/

Billy Cordell Grabarkewitz?
I see the similarities

Then again, I’m seeing similarities between the picture and Gene Clines at this point.

Mike Vail?

Pretty sure that’s wrong but he looks vaguely like Vail…

He looks nothing like Mike Vail

And mom always like him best!

I love this!

Nobody has it yet!

We need a subtle clue
There are a couple already above.

Read the whole thread.

Sure looks like

Ryne Sandberg

Sure, if Ryno had really bad sideburns.
This is way out there, but...

…a young Pat Hughes?

You're right, that's way out there.

And wrong.

I figured as much,

but I’m getting desperate. He looks so familiar it’s driving me up the wall.

The only clues are:

1. Pitched w/ Bill Bonham in the 70’s
2. Han Solo
3. Some spring training picture

Correct?

There is one more clue...

… which I didn’t mention myself, but I guess I will here…

Lefthanded.

okay, what year did Star Wars come out?
Ken Frailing
I'm guessing he never appeared in a ML game for the Cubs...

…and if that is true, I give up. :)

Frailing DID pitch in the majors for the Cubs.

But it’s not him.

Bad reply button on my part...

….is my statement true or false?

What statement?

That he never pitched in the majors? He did.

Or the statement that you give up?

Never pitched in the majors with the Cubs
Yes, Frailing DID pitch in the majors with the Cubs.

Over 100 appearances in 1974, 1975 and 1976.

But it’s not Frailing.

LOL. I don't mean Frailing, I mean the mystery guy...

….Did the mystery guy pitch in the majors for the Cubs?

Oh, DUH.

Yes, he did.

Lefties that pitched with Bonham

Ken Frailing
Dave LaRoche
Jim Kremmel
Mike Paul
Steve Hamilton
Dan McGinn
Clint Compton
Ray Newman
Earl Stephenson
Darold Knowles
Buddy Schultz
Geoff Zahn

Don't forget

Dave Roberts

and

Ramon and Willie Hernandez

Caucasian lefties
Clue.

All of the lefties in the above list were white.

You're having way too much fun with this....
What else is there to do on a snowy Saturday?
Yosh Kawano would know him
Well, of course he would.
In fact Yosh's nickname for him was...

….“that caucasion lefty”

Mike Proly?

looks a bit like him but I don’t think I ever saw Proly without the ’stache

Buddy Schultz
Doug Capilla

Looks like a Doug

Or Dave Geisel
Or George Riley
None of the above.
I'll ask down here...

Did the mystery guy ever pitch in the majors with the Cubs?

Answered above.

Yes, he did.

I won’t put any photo in this series unless the player actually appeared in a major league game (we did the one exception with Mark Leonette).

It must be disco Danny Terrio. He threw out the first pitch in 1979
last try, then back to work...Darold Knowles?
Wouldn't we all rather

try and figure out who this Cub is?

I don't think she ever played in the majors, though.
She looks like..........

………..MAJOR LEAGUE material to me!

Hey Al, does this blue jersey get your approval? ;-)
Why, of course it does!

:)

If it's not approved

Doesn’t it have to be removed?

does she know how to handle a bat?
I have that exact same jersey top ....

I’ll bet if I posted a picture of myself here, wearing that jersey, I wouldn’t get near the attention.

In order to forgo the humiliation, I won’t post it.

It's Clint Compton
DINGDINGDING!!!

At last, a winner.

Clint Compton pitched two innings in relief on the last day of the season, October 3, 1972. He gave up 2 runs in an 11-1 loss, and never pitched again in the majors. Odd, because he was only 21 years old and lefthanded, you’d have thought they would have given him another shot.

The photo was from spring training 1971 or 1972.

The photo is an original color negative for 1972 Topps

This was a good one.

Too bad he didn't have a longer stint in the majors.

With that brief of a history, it’s going to be really difficult to make a movie about him starring John Cusack. Then again, maybe he had a really interesting personal life.

I said Clint already
You did?

If so, you win. I missed it.

You mentioned Clint Compton in a list
Right.

That doesn’t count. flachimesa wins!

Bet she has great moves
Yes, thank you
What does that have to do with Han Solo? LOL.
So lists are against the rules?

I’m playing under protest lol. Has anyone ever won a protest?

Nope.

One guess at a time.

Thanks for clarification
Guess what team he pitched against?
Hint

John Bateman was cathching for the opponent

Play-by-play

Clint Compton pitched in one game, October 3, 1972 against the ??. He came in in the top of the 6th inning, replacing Glenn Beckert. He retired the side in that inning. In his second inning, he gave up singles to ?? and ??, walked ?? and walked ?? with the bases loaded. ?? then hit into a double play, scoring ??. He retired ?? on a fly to third base to end the inning. His career pitching totals: 2 innings pitch, 2 hits, 2 earned runs, 2 walks, 0 strikeouts.

See the link I posted above.

PIT?
NYM?
STL?
MON?
PHI?
CIN?
LAD?
HOU?
ATL?
SFG?
SDP?

Just kidding. It’s the list thang.

He pitched against the Phillies.

LOL

You’re still the winner in my book.

Here's a good one.

What other position did Ron Santo play in 1972?

2B, LF, SS in 1972
Gulp...

Warning Track woman a few posts ago just melted my driveway

What a crappy cap

this guy is wearing…

That's the kind of cap they wore in the early 70s.
