Echevarria always looked like he had power hitting ability, but he never really hit enough to become a regular. He had some OK years in Colorado, and his one year as a bench player with the Cubs was decent, although neither Don Baylor nor Bruce Kimm saw fit to give him any real playing time, he had only 98 at-bats.
Despite his name, he was 100% American — born in Bridgeport, Connecticut.
Did I ever tell you the Kimm story? We are personal friends with Joe Rios in the marketing office and 5 or 6 years ago we were at the convention and of course Kimm was there – he got so drunk one night that he stripped down naked and proceeded to run down the hallway on his floor of the hotel knocking on doors while running down the hallway. He had to be helped back to his room by hotel staff and everyone in the front office found out about his shenanigan.
I have Angel’s last career home run ball. He only hit three with the Cubs that year (2002) and #3 was a game-tying blast in the bottom of the 8th against StL on Sept 1. Cleared Waveland on the fly, came through the trees and I was able to scoop it up right in front of the Budweiser building.
Cubs went on to win the game thanks to the most unlikely confluence of efforts by three oft-maligned Cubs. Later that same inning, McGriff walks, CPatterson pinch runs and is sacrificed to 2nd, and then Alex Gonzalez singles him in with the winning run.
Good morning
A rare appearance at first base by Michael Tucker?

Angel Echeverria?
I seem to remember that guy was awesome in spring training.

DINGDINGDING!
We have a winner. And yes, the photo is from spring training, found at woolis.com.
Echevarria wore #12 during the regular season. I think that may have been #58 on his back during ST.

At the Hilton?
No wonder he hasn’t gotten another baseball job.
Al Yellon - January 25, 2009
I thought
…he had a coaching position with the White Sox this past year.
Or was that Wavin’ Wendel Kim?
Rev Gunia - January 26, 2009
The last MLB job Bruce Kimm had was in 2003 with the White Sox.

What are the odds…..

He seemed to have a lot of raw talent
Looking back on it, it’s odd that he didn’t get more of chance to play given how bad the Cubs were in 2002.

Didn't he pronounce it differently too?

It’s Angel Echevarria.

I Agree
Angel Eschevarria. He showed flashes of potential, but I think he left for Japan.
