Joe Schaffernoth?
KedzieKid - January 29, 2009
I'm amazed.
You’re right. How did you know this?
Al Yellon - January 29, 2009
It could only be ESP

Joe Schaffernoth...
… is another example of a kid screwed up by the College of Coaches. In 1960 he made 33 relief appearances and posted a 2.78 ERA (135 ERA+) for a bad team at age 22.
The next year his ERA ballooned and by midseason he was sold to Cleveland. You can just imagine all the different coaches each telling him to pitch a different way. He was probably never going to be a great pitcher, but maybe he could have been a decent middle reliever for a few years. It’s hard to believe management gave up on him at age 23.
Schaffernoth’s career stats

Gomer Pyle??
chrisw95 - January 29, 2009
I think this is one of few.....
things the college of coaches agreed upon but they were right. He had 58 appearances in three years with the cubs and a 3 and 7 record with an ERA over 4.50
Clutche - January 29, 2009
How were they right?
Schaffernoth had a good year at age 22 under a manager. Then he had 11 coaches telling him what to do and he sucked.
Who’s to blame? The pitcher or the coaches? I think it’s the coaches.

"Yes dear. You're right. I'm sorry."

Obviously, Dusty Baker had something to do with it...

Duddits?
Douglas “Duddits” Cavell (Donnie Wahlberg) from Stephen Kings Dreamcatcher?
TheHawkRules - January 29, 2009
wild guess
It was just a guess, Al. I have a vast collection of vintage baseball cards, and he looked familiar. Plus he comes from the era that I first got hooked watching our heroes from. It was a toss up for me from him or Al Heist.
KedzieKid - January 29, 2009
Pretty good for a wild guess.

Hey
this guy is the original “Spellcheck”
wild bill - January 29, 2009
His last name...
…reminds me of the word “schadenfreude” defined here as:
daver - January 29, 2009
Daver, your definition is nice, but you need to use it in a sentence.
Santoswoodenlegs’ schadenfreude will expand exponentially this season as he watches Ronny Cedeno play baseball for the Seattle Mariners.
santoswoodenlegs - January 29, 2009
You must have watched "The 7 Deadly Sins" on the History Channel . . . .

When did they remove...
the “boxes” (visible in picture) from the box seats?
bison - January 29, 2009
When they redid the lower deck in 1968 and 1969.

Joe da'Bum
I remember hanging over the Bartman wall, as a kid, trying to get autographs. During the game I yelled out “Put in Schaffernoth”. He looked up at me and said “Shut the f*** up kid..” A real class act. I was 12. I still have his worthless card from that season.
