Milton Bradley is signed. Mark DeRosa and Jason Marquis are traded. If any more acquisitions are to be made, it may be a while.
So while we're waiting, and while it's puking snow this morning in Chicago, see if you can identify this handsome young Cub. (Apologies for the small size of the photo.)

Don Zimmer?
bison - January 9, 2009
Man, you ruined all the fun.
I thought this one would take a while.
Al Yellon - January 9, 2009
Here's the larger version of the photo.
It was taken in 1961 when Zim was a player for the Cubs — that was his only All-Star season.
Al Yellon - January 9, 2009
Wow-never seen him as a young man
bren - January 9, 2009
His youth is a myth.
neverAcquiesce - January 9, 2009
Can't be.
There’s photographic evidence right there.
Al Yellon - January 9, 2009
And a dinosaur really attacked Jeff Goldblum.
neverAcquiesce - January 9, 2009
Carl Everett disagrees.
davidalanu - January 9, 2009
Never heard that
but god bless wikipedia.
You know, the god who didn’t create dinosaurs.
neverAcquiesce - January 9, 2009
Carl Everett would love the Mythbusters rerun I DVR'd this week
They debunked some of the more popular “evidence” that the moon landing was a hoax.
Shanghai Badger - January 9, 2009
That episode was fantastic
and it probably would have driven “Jurassic Carl” crazy.
Bill Potter - January 9, 2009
Yes, that was brilliant.
neverAcquiesce - January 10, 2009
Just watched the "lead balloon" one
That wasn’t too bad, either
Shanghai Badger - January 10, 2009
It's one of those programs
I hate when they show marathons of cos there goes my day.
neverAcquiesce - January 10, 2009
Yeah, I can see that
I never watched it much until this fall . . . now I’m hooked. I blame Kari . . . .
Shanghai Badger - January 10, 2009
Did you know an ex-Cub was in that movie?
I’m talking about Jurassic Park. Can you guess who?
Al Yellon - January 9, 2009
Jophery Brown?
Bill Potter - January 9, 2009
Jophery C. Brown
heine41 - January 9, 2009
Excellent work, both of you.
Jophery Brown made one appearance for the 1968 Cubs, pitching two innings and allowing one run.
For most of the last 30 or so years he has been a renowned Hollywood stuntman, and also has had bit acting roles in some films. In “Jurassic Park” he was the park worker who got eaten by the raptor.
Here’s his page at the Internet Movie Database. Quite an impressive film career.
Al Yellon - January 9, 2009
Huh.
You learn stuff everyday at BCB.
neverAcquiesce - January 10, 2009
Should I have just posted...
first?
I mean, it’s all about the jowls with Popeye. Hard to hide.
bison - January 9, 2009
There's a small jowl, but I thought with him looking so skinny and all... it would fool everyone for a while, at least.
Here, try this one instead:
Al Yellon - January 9, 2009
Actually, for me it was the eyes...
those beady little gerbil eyes… ;-)
ballhawk - January 9, 2009
So Zim really hasn't changed in over 45 years...
Al Yellon - January 9, 2009
I don't see Pedro charging toward him in these photos...
hehe…
PurpleLineToWrigley - January 9, 2009
That might have been the most bizarre brawl ever.
Al Yellon - January 9, 2009
Saturday Night Live did a pretty funny parody of it.
I couldn’t find a clip of that, but here’s a short clip of the actual incident. The whole thing is just awkward.
daver - January 9, 2009
my niece gave me a martinez
t-shirt that year. I refused to wear it after that event.
Emelie - January 9, 2009
You know, Zim apologized and took the blame for it
Shanghai Badger - January 9, 2009
yeah but
it just didn’t sit well with me to have a young but toss a 70 something man around like that
Emelie - January 9, 2009
er... "young buck"
Emelie - January 9, 2009
Fair enough
And I knew what you meant — I didn’t think that you had any problems with young “buts” from what I’ve read! ;-)
Shanghai Badger - January 9, 2009
I seem to have an obsession with but(t)s
Emelie - January 10, 2009
But you also have an excellent sense of humor
Shanghai Badger - January 10, 2009
:-D
Emelie - January 10, 2009
I'm amazed....
Even I got this one, and I’m terrible at this sort of thing!
And it really IS true – Zim looks just as he did way back when. Maybe he has a special baseball card in the attic?
CaughtInTheVines - January 9, 2009
damn
do you have another one??
Chanman25 - January 9, 2009
Lousy Cub Catcher
Fellow named Merritt Ranew? BTW, my first Cub game was April 26th, 1961 and I saw Zim win that game with a 10th inning “walk off” homer!
KedzieKid - January 9, 2009
all morning
I’ve been trying to make him into Ken Rudolph……I knew it was some sort of catcher.
MOCubsfan - January 9, 2009
I was going to say Paul Reuschel after two weeks on Nutrisystem
BLou - January 9, 2009
I've got one
But how do you add image to comment?
Clutche - January 9, 2009
Maybe you should e-mail it to Al so he can put it on the front page.
daver - January 9, 2009
I've got one
What’s Al’s e-mail address?
Clutche - January 9, 2009
It is on the homepage.
On the left bar under “Staff”.
dtpollitt - January 9, 2009
found Al's e-mail
thanks
Clutche - January 9, 2009
thanks for the update...
…let us know when you send it, get a reply, and then delete the email.
carmen_fanzone - January 9, 2009
found Al's e-mail
sent but no reply
Clutche - January 9, 2009
LOL
carmen_fanzone - January 9, 2009
I got the email... I think.
I got an email from someone who sent a pic, but I’m not sure if it’s Clutche or not.
Also, he didn’t send the answer — and it’s stumped me!
Al Yellon - January 9, 2009
you are hilarious
you gave me a good laugh
