So far, the best game this October has been a regular season game -- the Twins/Tigers tiebreaker on October 6. Though there have been exciting comebacks and more exciting comebacks after controversial plays and even more exciting comebacks on stunning bullpen meltdowns, three series are already over as three-game sweeps. When the history of this season is looked back on, it will appear that those three series were one-sided and dull.
Which is why I'd like to see the Rockies win tonight (this afternoon? these wacky game times have me scratching my head), to at least force one winner-take-all game in the Division Series round. Also, if the Phillies win today, that means no baseball until Thursday, since that's the date the NLCS will begin at Dodger Stadium. Did you know that if the championship series wind up in sweeps, there will be eight days between the end of the ALCS and World Series? Way to keep interest at a peak, Bud. Here's the complete postseason schedule.
And the weather isn't supposed to be much warmer in Denver today; game time temperature is likely to be in the upper 30's and fall from there. This is very unusual; the average high in Denver for October 12 is 70 degrees.

Phillies at Rockies, 5 pm CDT. Phillies lead series 2-1. TV: TBS. Announcers: Brian Anderson and Joe Simpson
Baseball-reference.com game preview
Please visit our SB Nation Rockies site Purple Row and Phillies site The Good Phight.
Once again, no overflows scheduled today. If you need one, post it in the FanShot section.
Discuss amongst yourselves.

It's been a disjointed postseason so far
Especially this series given with the snow-out game and all the odd starting times.

Who dat on the photo? He looks like this d-bag:
Actor Scott Caan, son of legendary d-bag James Caan.

I am trying to figure out
what the photo has anything to with this. I do find it humerous.
Grockcubs - October 12, 2009
Caan looks like the Philadelphia player below the headline of this post.
chilango2 - October 12, 2009
It's Chase Utley on the front page.
Al Yellon - October 12, 2009
The Cro-Magnon is strong in both Utley and Caan.

Fun fact:
My doctoral student office is adjacent to the Gale Sayers Library / Computer Lab. He’s a KU graduate and was recently named the KU Athletics as the face of raising monies for some new addition-for-rich-people at the football stadium.

I agree Al
I am still trying to figure out why the Phils and the Rockies played at 10:07EST. Yeah I know they want the world renowned Yanks at primetime and the Broncos played home yesterday. However they could of done a better job of the game time. Hell I was up till 2:05am watching the game, a good game and probably no one saw it.
All I can say is go Angels.
Grockcubs - October 12, 2009
Why would anyone stay up until 2:05 am watching the Rockies play?
BTW, when is Marquis pitching? Good for him that he got out of Chicago to adoring fans (sorta like Orton).
zevkalman - October 12, 2009
Jason is in the bullpen
Only likely to come out if starter goes down early or if it is a blowout. Had very bad last month of the season. I want
Pedro to start.
Doggie Stalker - October 12, 2009
I woked until 11:15pm
Get home and do not go to bed right away, family was already in the rack, it was a good game, and I did not have to get early in the morning. Plus I guess I am nuts.
Grockcubs - October 12, 2009
It was kind of cool listening to breakfast baseball.
My Alarm went of in the bottom of the 5th (6:00 AM) and I ended arriving at work ½ a hour or so late.
But from an American POV the starting time was a real joke.

LDS should be best of 7
At the very least, it would guarantee fans at least 2 games in each ballpark. Being down 2-0 in a best of 5 is a death sentence for a team. A best of 7 would be more exciting!

Dodgers vs. Yankees. God, I hope this isn’t this year’s matchup.

Guten Nacht - Go Phillies
eths - October 12, 2009
I just don't understand why
they schedule the whole playoffs before it starts. NBA and NHL don’t do it and seem to do just fine. It should be scheduled based on when series end, maybe that could help.
niuhuskie224 - October 12, 2009
Bud argues something for hotels. I don't remember what, but it matters naut.
He’s an idiot.
dtpollitt - October 12, 2009
gee - and who might those hotels be for?
Certainly not the fans of the home team – which should be the vast majority of those in attendance. Unless of course, this is not the case. Surely it can’t be because of all the stuffed suits and VIPs and Class B has-been actors and actresses that dot the roster of lame FOX and TBS shows? Nahhhhhh…….
ballhawk - October 12, 2009
Yabbut...
… they do that hotel thing easily enough for the NHL and NBA. You’d think baseball could do the same.
Al Yellon - October 12, 2009
Tulo hits the gap.
Phils dos
Rox uno
Todd Helton moving on the base paths like an ox.
But seriously, do you realize how friggin AWESOME Todd Helton is? He’s a career .328 hitter. His career OPS+ is 141. 141!! He has nearly 2200 hits, 330 HR, and 1200+ RBI. He’s better than average defensively at first base, and his career WAR is superb. And he’s spent his entire career with the Rockies. FIRST BALLOT HOFer.
dtpollitt - October 12, 2009
Damn
that is pretty good.
He kind of flies under the radar in Denver. If he’d put up those numbers in New York or Boston, ESPN would revere him as a god.

utley and werth mostly because of their soul patches. not sure why i dont like victorino and rollins, i just do
jesus christos - October 12, 2009
I respect your hate. And I salute you for it, good sir.
dtpollitt - October 12, 2009
I love the Flying Hawaiian.
He was the one who showed me why Lou was a bad manager at that game back in April of 07. As the BACK UP
leadoff guy ( Rollins was out) he made Lilly throw 12 pitches in his first at bat. He did not even get on but that is when I saw what real leadoff guy could do.
Doggie Stalker - October 12, 2009
i think i dislike victorino because his helmet makes him look like hes from star wars
jesus christos - October 12, 2009
I hate all the people on the Yankees roster.
dtpollitt - October 12, 2009
There is probably one player I don't hate on the Yankees roster
but I would have to look it over closely.
Doggie Stalker - October 12, 2009
I like their manager....
LT - October 12, 2009
I do to
I always wonder what if the Cubs had hired him.
Doggie Stalker - October 12, 2009
I recall that the rationale behind not signing Joe was that they didn't want him ...
making rookie mistakes for the Cubs as a manager. They wanted him to make rookie mistakes somewhere else, undoubtedly where it wouldn’t matter as much.
Great thinking on Cubs’ management’s part. I am sure that Joe feels that the Yankees are his training wheels on the way to the truly big time in Chicago.
Cubfansince1957 - October 12, 2009
He was a manager before he got to the Yankees
He was NL manager of the year with the Marlins. Actually he was unemployed when it was awarded.
LT - October 12, 2009
You're right.
I forgot about his stint with the Fish. Still, wasn’t there something about the Cubs not wanting an inexperienced manager as the reason why they didn’t hire him?
Cubfansince1957 - October 13, 2009
Joe wanted to manage the Cubs
but he won’t be leaving the Yankees. Cubs will have to look elsewhere. Perhaps an old teammate.
Doggie Stalker - October 12, 2009
MILTON BRADLEY?
jesus christos - October 12, 2009
Girardi
I wanted Girardi to take over for Dusty. Overall, I think Piniella has done a good job managing the Cubs. However, this past season’s performance was not good. Piniella deserves the chance to finish out his contract.
I wanted Girardi because he is someone that’s got more left in the managing tank than Lou does. I don’t see Girardi leaving the Yankees for the Cubs, either.
memphiscub - October 13, 2009
I'll be cheering for the Angels, thank you very little.
dtpollitt - October 12, 2009
Other than winning the WS last year what is wrong with the Phillies
Very well constructed team with both home grown players, good FA signings and one hell of a midseason trade.
Doggie Stalker - October 12, 2009
They won the World Series last year.
The Angels deserve it more. I don’t like ANYTHING about the Yankees or Dodgers. I’ll take the Angels.
dtpollitt - October 12, 2009
I get the Phillies already won so let someone else view but
still like the Phillies . Won’t hold their winning against them and I especially want Stevie to get another ring.
Doggie Stalker - October 12, 2009
Lopes and Bowa
It’s funny to see the long time Dodger, Lopes, in a Phillies uniform, coaching first base. It’s also funny to see the long time Phillie, Larry Bowa, in a Dodgers uniform, coaching third base. The Cubs’ farm system was so bad when Dallas Green got to the organization that he had to trade for a lot of veteran players to build the 1984 club. Lopes and Bowa were two of those guys. I sure wish Bowa had hit better for the Cubs.
memphiscub - October 13, 2009
The weirdest thing about Lopes' career...
… is that one of the Phillies current players, Jamie Moyer, was his teammate.
On the Cubs. 23 years ago. Look it up.
Al Yellon - October 13, 2009
Amazing, but true.

Vermont Cubs Fan - October 13, 2009
June 16 - July 20, 1986
I do see Jamie Moyer was brought up more than a month before the Cubs traded Lopes to the Astros for Frank DiPino in 1986. At age 64, I think Lopes could do a better job stealing bases than half of the Cubs’ current roster.
memphiscub - October 13, 2009
Well Bowa may not have hit that well
but I kind of like that guy we got with him in the same trade.
Doggie Stalker - October 13, 2009
That Minor League Shortstop
I heard that guy never panned out as a major league shortstop. He only played 7 games in the big leagues at that position. IIRC, his name was something like Sanderson or Sundberg

i wonder if he was any good at 2b...
