At Least ONE Division Series Is Competitive: NLDS Game 4 Preview, Phillies vs. Rockies, Monday 10/12, 5 PM CT

So far, the best game this October has been a regular season game -- the Twins/Tigers tiebreaker on October 6. Though there have been exciting comebacks and more exciting comebacks after controversial plays and even more exciting comebacks on stunning bullpen meltdowns, three series are already over as three-game sweeps. When the history of this season is looked back on, it will appear that those three series were one-sided and dull.

Which is why I'd like to see the Rockies win tonight (this afternoon? these wacky game times have me scratching my head), to at least force one winner-take-all game in the Division Series round. Also, if the Phillies win today, that means no baseball until Thursday, since that's the date the NLCS will begin at Dodger Stadium. Did you know that if the championship series wind up in sweeps, there will be eight days between the end of the ALCS and World Series? Way to keep interest at a peak, Bud. Here's the complete postseason schedule.

And the weather isn't supposed to be much warmer in Denver today; game time temperature is likely to be in the upper 30's and fall from there. This is very unusual; the average high in Denver for October 12 is 70 degrees.

It's been a disjointed postseason so far

Especially this series given with the snow-out game and all the odd starting times.

Penguin approves: It was a beautiful evening for baseball

Who dat on the photo? He looks like this d-bag:

Actor Scott Caan, son of legendary d-bag James Caan.

I am trying to figure out

what the photo has anything to with this. I do find it humerous.

Caan looks like the Philadelphia player below the headline of this post.
It's Chase Utley on the front page.
The Cro-Magnon is strong in both Utley and Caan.
and the Caans are d-bags because...?
They always play one on the screen, thus...
Gale Sayers is on line one...

…and he’s pissed!

Fun fact:

My doctoral student office is adjacent to the Gale Sayers Library / Computer Lab. He’s a KU graduate and was recently named the KU Athletics as the face of raising monies for some new addition-for-rich-people at the football stadium.

I agree Al

I am still trying to figure out why the Phils and the Rockies played at 10:07EST. Yeah I know they want the world renowned Yanks at primetime and the Broncos played home yesterday. However they could of done a better job of the game time. Hell I was up till 2:05am watching the game, a good game and probably no one saw it.
All I can say is go Angels.

Why would anyone stay up until 2:05 am watching the Rockies play?

BTW, when is Marquis pitching? Good for him that he got out of Chicago to adoring fans (sorta like Orton).

Jason is in the bullpen

Only likely to come out if starter goes down early or if it is a blowout. Had very bad last month of the season. I want
Pedro to start.

I woked until 11:15pm

Get home and do not go to bed right away, family was already in the rack, it was a good game, and I did not have to get early in the morning. Plus I guess I am nuts.

It was kind of cool listening to breakfast baseball.

My Alarm went of in the bottom of the 5th (6:00 AM) and I ended arriving at work ½ a hour or so late.

But from an American POV the starting time was a real joke.

where are you?
Germany
Ah. Assuming Frankfurt (Central European Time) that is +2 UTC....

Makes sense.

Munich

Btw: CET is +1 UTC (winter) & CEST is +2 UTC (summer)

Ah! Makes sense. Thanks.
I saw it

I was at the game last night, and it was downright frigid! I have sat through some cold games before, but never anything like that.

It was probably warmer at the NHL Winter Classic last January.

could have or could've not “could of”

grammar pirate?
LDS should be best of 7

At the very least, it would guarantee fans at least 2 games in each ballpark. Being down 2-0 in a best of 5 is a death sentence for a team. A best of 7 would be more exciting!

Then the World Series wouldn't end until Thanksgiving
It's already ending in Nov...

..wuts a few more days

Then we might get this...

There'll be a few of those in Minnesota...
Yep.
And crowds mutant fans...

Evolution in action…

WE WILL GET THAT NEXT YEAR, DON'T WORRY.

It snowed in Minnesota last week.

So Much for Global Warming
It just went Bam Bam at the Pebbles

Victorino strikes first with a dong to right center.

1-0 Phils

Weird shadows at the park, a la Wrigley.

If I see that @$&#*%^ Blackberry ad one more time, I am going to scream.

For the last time, TBS: I AM NOT BUYING A BLACKBERRY

The one with the girl taking videos of the other guys in the crew krumpin'

so she can go back home and practice her moves in front of a mirror, and then show off to them later is the worst.

If you have to practice it, honey, you ain’t really krumpin.’

chill out dude

sarcasm

i am loving antarctic baseball

but could care less who wins… :(

MLB Network right now has the highlights of the 1955 World Series.

Dodgers vs. Yankees. God, I hope this isn’t this year’s matchup.

Guten Nacht - Go Phillies
I just don't understand why

they schedule the whole playoffs before it starts. NBA and NHL don’t do it and seem to do just fine. It should be scheduled based on when series end, maybe that could help.

Bud argues something for hotels. I don't remember what, but it matters naut.

He’s an idiot.

gee - and who might those hotels be for?

Certainly not the fans of the home team – which should be the vast majority of those in attendance. Unless of course, this is not the case. Surely it can’t be because of all the stuffed suits and VIPs and Class B has-been actors and actresses that dot the roster of lame FOX and TBS shows? Nahhhhhh…….

Yabbut...

… they do that hotel thing easily enough for the NHL and NBA. You’d think baseball could do the same.

Tulo hits the gap.

Phils dos
Rox uno

Todd Helton moving on the base paths like an ox.

But seriously, do you realize how friggin AWESOME Todd Helton is? He’s a career .328 hitter. His career OPS+ is 141. 141!! He has nearly 2200 hits, 330 HR, and 1200+ RBI. He’s better than average defensively at first base, and his career WAR is superb. And he’s spent his entire career with the Rockies. FIRST BALLOT HOFer.

Damn

that is pretty good.

He kind of flies under the radar in Denver. If he’d put up those numbers in New York or Boston, ESPN would revere him as a god.

Ibanez pulls a Holliday!

Loses the ball in LF in the lights/towels!

This is a classic grand slam by the Phillies situation here

But I think the Rockies squeeze out of it

Bentencourt gets out of it

He’s really good

OH MY GOD THAT MIGHT BE TOP 10 PLAYS OF THE YEAR

FOWLER JUST JUMPED ENTIRELY OVER UTLEY IN A 4-6-3 DP ATTEMPT. EVERYONE’S SAFE!

Jason Giambi with the rope to left.

New ballgame.

TORREALBA doubles off the right-center wall. 4-2 ROX

Phillies should sign Gregg
YAY!

We’re gonna have a game 5! Prolly.

not so fast my friend....
There were two outs...
When have I heard THAT before.
at least it wasn't 5 outs...
i remember thinking that in san diego and florida and...
Ryan Howard disagrees with that.
Looks we have an entertaining game
Brad Lidge to close ?

This could be interesting.

The Phillies are good at baseball
This is bullshit.

I don’t want the only four teams left to be:

LA
LA
NY
PHIL

D
U
M
B

I don't hate the Rockies but I still prefer the Phillies

They now have 5 ex Cubs ( Moyer is injured and won’t play in the post season but he would get a ring if they win).
I am still waiting for Holliday to touch the plate.

Yeah

plus I don’t want to see another expansion team winning before the Cubs.

FYI one of my all time favorite baseball team commercials.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S1OLJNQW_d0

With Lidge closing

This could be interesting yet

Says Scott Eyre.
I thought Eyre had a bum ankle?
Yikes he was sort of injured yesterday.

He also through a lot of pitches .Well if your other choice is Lidge it is kind of ugly. Go Stevie

EY2 is fast like his dad
Eyre?

Really?

Announcers ask if Eyre " can field his position" ?

I hope we don’t have to find out.

Carlos Gonzalez aka the rockies star this series

starts the rally

MILES AND BRADLEY 4 CARGO

GETITDONE JIM

YES

SINGLE

2 ON
2 OUT

I LIVE FOR THIS!!!!JR2389H8FP340HG843JQWG[

Helton with a hit

and it’s up to Tulo again.

Lidge coming in (i think)

PUT IN PEDRO YOU FOOLS.
+1,000

Pedro was born for moments like this

Tulo gonna show why he kicks ass and takes names.
DUMB

LA
LA
NY
PHIL

from what I've seen

those are the best 4 teams this year

Lidge wins

Go figure.
Go Phillies ALL THE WAY.

Nope.

I’m rooting for the Angels this year.

i hate the about half the people on the phillies roster
Really who ?

I don’t like wife beater Myers but I can’t think of anyone else I don’t like. Big fan of Stevie, Stairs, Victorino, Pedro & Lee among others.

i really dont like victorino rollins utley and werth

utley and werth mostly because of their soul patches. not sure why i dont like victorino and rollins, i just do

I respect your hate. And I salute you for it, good sir.
I love the Flying Hawaiian.

He was the one who showed me why Lou was a bad manager at that game back in April of 07. As the BACK UP
leadoff guy ( Rollins was out) he made Lilly throw 12 pitches in his first at bat. He did not even get on but that is when I saw what real leadoff guy could do.

i think i dislike victorino because his helmet makes him look like hes from star wars
I hate all the people on the Yankees roster.
There is probably one player I don't hate on the Yankees roster

but I would have to look it over closely.

I like their manager....
I do to

I always wonder what if the Cubs had hired him.

I recall that the rationale behind not signing Joe was that they didn't want him ...

making rookie mistakes for the Cubs as a manager. They wanted him to make rookie mistakes somewhere else, undoubtedly where it wouldn’t matter as much.

Great thinking on Cubs’ management’s part. I am sure that Joe feels that the Yankees are his training wheels on the way to the truly big time in Chicago.

He was a manager before he got to the Yankees

He was NL manager of the year with the Marlins. Actually he was unemployed when it was awarded.

You're right.

I forgot about his stint with the Fish. Still, wasn’t there something about the Cubs not wanting an inexperienced manager as the reason why they didn’t hire him?

Joe wanted to manage the Cubs

but he won’t be leaving the Yankees. Cubs will have to look elsewhere. Perhaps an old teammate.

Perhaps an old teammate.

MILTON BRADLEY?

Girardi

I wanted Girardi to take over for Dusty. Overall, I think Piniella has done a good job managing the Cubs. However, this past season’s performance was not good. Piniella deserves the chance to finish out his contract.

I wanted Girardi because he is someone that’s got more left in the managing tank than Lou does. I don’t see Girardi leaving the Yankees for the Cubs, either.

I'll be cheering for the Angels, thank you very little.
Other than winning the WS last year what is wrong with the Phillies

Very well constructed team with both home grown players, good FA signings and one hell of a midseason trade.

They won the World Series last year.

The Angels deserve it more. I don’t like ANYTHING about the Yankees or Dodgers. I’ll take the Angels.

I get the Phillies already won so let someone else view but

still like the Phillies . Won’t hold their winning against them and I especially want Stevie to get another ring.

Lopes and Bowa

It’s funny to see the long time Dodger, Lopes, in a Phillies uniform, coaching first base. It’s also funny to see the long time Phillie, Larry Bowa, in a Dodgers uniform, coaching third base. The Cubs’ farm system was so bad when Dallas Green got to the organization that he had to trade for a lot of veteran players to build the 1984 club. Lopes and Bowa were two of those guys. I sure wish Bowa had hit better for the Cubs.

The weirdest thing about Lopes' career...

… is that one of the Phillies current players, Jamie Moyer, was his teammate.

On the Cubs. 23 years ago. Look it up.

June 16 - July 20, 1986

I do see Jamie Moyer was brought up more than a month before the Cubs traded Lopes to the Astros for Frank DiPino in 1986. At age 64, I think Lopes could do a better job stealing bases than half of the Cubs’ current roster.

Well Bowa may not have hit that well

but I kind of like that guy we got with him in the same trade.

That Minor League Shortstop

I heard that guy never panned out as a major league shortstop. He only played 7 games in the big leagues at that position. IIRC, his name was something like Sanderson or Sundberg

i wonder if he was any good at 2b...
