Thursday's temperatures were anything but mild--and would have been at home in late November. The day's 44-degree official high equaled readings observed here for the date in 1876, 1909 and 1943--each tying as Oct. 15's coldest on record. The tenacious cold spell--which is to last into Sunday morning before breaking--produces a 19th day of below normal temperatures Friday and limits highs to the 40s for a 7th consecutive day--the most ever so early in the season. Chicago's average temperature over the month's first 15 days slipped Thursday to 47.3-degrees---the city's chilliest October open in the 133 years since 1876. Not only has it been cool---it's been cloudy and wet. Rain has fallen 10 of the past 15 days and has totaled 2.13 inches---nearly an inch (0.85) above normal. The damp weather has allowed only 38 percent of October's possible sunshine to date---58 percent is typical.
Things aren't much better in the New York area, where snow fell within 50 miles of Yankee Stadium last night and where there is at least an 80% chance of rain and cold temperatures through Sunday.
This creates a real scheduling problem for the ALCS; they do have off days on Sunday and Wednesday, which they could use for rescheduling postponements. However, Fox, which is carrying the ALCS, won't want a Sunday day game, as they are committed to NFL telecasts during the afternoon. If there's a postponement and there's a game rescheduled for Sunday night, that would affect game 3 -- which is now scheduled to be played Monday afternoon in Anaheim. Further, that would mess up Yankee manager Joe Girardi's plan to use only three starting pitchers in the series; he'd probably be forced to let Chad Gaudin start game four. The mind boggles -- Chad Gaudin, who a year ago was recovering from an injury to his back suffered when he fell into or onto a trash dumpster, had a terrible spring for the Cubs and was released, might start a game in the American League Championship Series.
What a mess. And it's not necessarily anyone's fault for scheduling these games in mid-October; the average high in New York for today is 63 degrees.
Meanwhile, there are no such problems in Los Angeles for today's NLCS game two; it's going to be sunny and unseasonably hot in LA this afternoon, possibly as warm as 92 degrees.

Well, the weather in Chicago is in keeping with the summer most of us experienced in the Midwest.
Global Warming? Where’s that?
Zeke - October 16, 2009
It's cold here in Vermont, too ... it got below freezing last night.
OT: I hope to be in the game threads more than I was yesterday. It was extremely busy at work yesterday.
However, I was able to take my lunch break at 7 PM, so I could watch Jeopardy (I always do this, and play along with the game show).
As a result of being able to watch Jeopardy, I got to see this. It may be the funniest moment I have ever seen on the show.

The juxtaposition
of the weather in NY vs LA reminds of something my Dad always used to say:
“If America had been colonized from West to East instead of the other way around, the Eastern Seaboard will still be uninhabited”.

My brother lives in Long Beach and when I kid him about sliding into the ocean when the next big earthquake hits he says...
“There are two sides to every fault line- maybe it’s the rest of the country that slides into the ocean and we stay put.”
Um, I don’t think so…
Zeke - October 16, 2009
Which reminds me
it will be 20 years ago tomorrow that the World Series was thrown for a loop by the Loma Prieta earthquake in the Bay Area. I guess if MLB could get through that, it can handle some rain.
If Fairbanks, Alaska could sustain a 9.2 magnitude quake without falling into the ocean, then I would guess Long Beach is relatively safe.

It is HORRIBLE here
They could never have played if they had a game scheduled last night and per above it is going to be bad. Now if they
had scheduled a DAY game today, it would be cold but playable, tonight I doubt. I dug out my boots and gloves and my umbrella that got broken by the wind. Couldn’t happen to a nicer team.
Doggie Stalker - October 16, 2009
Doesn't look like there's a whole lot of rain around, though.
I suspect if it’s not raining, they will try to play.
Al Yellon - October 16, 2009

Doggie Stalker - October 16, 2009
Anyone have any idea why Yankee fans (my friends included)
are, at most, ambivilant on the possibility of Gaudin starting in the ALCS. A quick word seach at the Pinstripe Alley front page found the only mention of his name in the roster list on the left.
I don’t see any calls for rebellion or torches/pitchforks from the fans like I’d expect in Chicago if he was here. It occurs to me that it’s possible Yankee/Red Sox fans are more accepting of role players and journeyman not being future all stars and view them as replacable parts.
Anyone have any ideas?
N Oakley - October 16, 2009
I don't think it's them yet
And especially if the Yankees are trailing 2-1 or 3-0 and their season rests in the hands of Chad Gaudin, then they will realize the magnitude of what could happen.
Knowing Yankees fans, they aren’t considering behind behind in this series at all, actually.
Bill Potter - October 16, 2009
Both towns vilify big name/big money players if they don't live up to hype, but
The Sox/Yankees endured former Cubs like Mark Bellhorn, Tightpants, and Felix the HR Heredia. Not much was expected and not much happened when they moved.
N Oakley - October 16, 2009
Mark Bellhorn helped get the Red Sox into the WS and win it.
He’ll have a place there forever.
Al Yellon - October 16, 2009
True, he'll always be part of the lore, but that didn't keep them from
releasing him the following season. Just wondering.
N Oakley - October 16, 2009
The Yankees ran off both Tightpants and Heredia.
Especially, Farnsworth, since he was signed for a decent chunk of change.
I just don’t think it’s hit Yankees fans yet that Chad Gaudin could be their Game 4 starter. And if he does start, they’ll be angrier at Brian Cashman/Joe Girardi (especially with Joba! in the bullpen) than Gaudin. Though I maintain that the average Yankee fan has not considered that they would be trailing entering Game 4, either.
Bill Potter - October 16, 2009
Is it just me, or...
… is Joba about the most overhyped prospect you have seen in the last 10 years?
He seems like a nicer version of Farnsworth.
Al Yellon - October 16, 2009
He's definitely up there.
So far, when he’s been in the bullpen, he’s looked great, but the Yankees want him to start for whatever reason. I think we could see him and Hughes swap spots in next year, allowing Hughes to start.
And if Joba succeeds in the pen, he could deliver on some of that considerable hype.
Bill Potter - October 16, 2009
Should I Take Offense? :-D
Icubsfan - October 17, 2009
I meant, of course...
… KYLE Farnsworth.

eths - October 16, 2009

Bill Potter - October 16, 2009
I almost hope they don't get the NY game in, so that we "enjoy the resulting chaos"
::evil grin::
eths - October 16, 2009
wish chaos on Bud Selig?
I’d never do that.
Bill Potter - October 16, 2009
What? Who? Me?
eths - October 16, 2009
So FOX doesn't want an ALCS on Sunday because they have NFL all day?
And a Sunday night game followed by travel would mean Monday’s game would almost have to be at night, going up against the NLCS on TBS? And Bud Lite is sitting in his office poring over weather maps, arms akimbo and brow furrowed, muttering to himself “what are we going to do, what are we going to do”???
Mwahahahahaha! I love it! Serves MLB right. They go and whore themselves out to the Networks and then they act all concerned and frustrated when things don’t go smoothly? I guess Mother Nature didn’t get the memo, eh Bud? But hey, at least you all have your hotel room reservations – you got that going for you…
George Carlin once said “I love chaos”. Well, when it comes to MLB and their inane decisions, me too…
ballhawk - October 16, 2009
The ALCS would resume on Tuesday, not Monday...
… if there’s a rainout or rainouts.
Al Yellon - October 16, 2009
Article in today's Trib seemed to indicate Monday was an option
But ff they do go the Tuesday route for Game 3 then I assume everyone would have to do the ticket/date shuffle right? If you had tickets for Game 3 on Monday, they would now be good for Game 3 on Tuesday. Likewise, Game 4 tickets would now be good for Wednesday instead of Tuesday.
Still a lot of chaos, and even if it’s not Bud’s fault, I hope he gets blamed and some of this crap starts sticking to him. I suppose it’s possible his successor could be worse, but at this point I don’t care – Bud needs to go, asap.
ballhawk - October 16, 2009

Hi everyone. You still want Chone Figgins for the Cubs?
Because him and Aybar are gonna be available…
chilango2 - October 16, 2009
No on Figgins, no, no, a zillion times no.
Before 2010 was over, you’d all be bitching about the length and dollars of his contract.
Al Yellon - October 16, 2009
Thank you.
Please predicate this soon and often. Everyone needs to realize he’d (they’d) be a bad idea.
chilango2 - October 16, 2009
Don't be so hasty...
It would have to depend on the length and dollars of his contract. Everyone thought Abreu was going to get big money last year and look what happened there.
Certainly there are better options for Hendry to spend market-rate money (assuming he has the budget to do so), but if Figgins somehow ends up being in the bargain-value aisle, why not?
ballhawk - October 16, 2009
Because he's not all that good.
Better than Theriot, sure, but defensively inferior to in-house options.
chilango2 - October 16, 2009
Well, if we do test the waters on Chone, I should hope it's not for defensive reasons...
ballhawk - October 16, 2009
I just think the money could be better spent elsewhere.
You can’t just say, “Well, soandso’s a free agent, GETITDONEJIM!” Doesn’t always help the team, as we found out a year ago.
Al Yellon - October 16, 2009
I have no idea what you're talking about
/sarcasm
Emelie - October 16, 2009
Agreed that it could be better spent elsewhere
but a leadoff hitter and/or the need for speed seems to be a hole that needs plugging this offseason. At least that’s what Lou has said – I don’t think Hendry has made any such definitive statements yet. And at least offensively, Figgins fills that hole nicely. I’m not as worried about $/yrs as much as I am where he would play. HIs strengths seem to be positions that are already capably filled on our team.
So baseball-wise, there does not seem to be a good fit w/ Cubs aside from the speed. And I doubt Figgins will be lacking in suitors this off-season, so I don’t really see a need for all this angst and gnashing of the teeth about something that isn’t going to happen. All my interest and arguments were based on the what-if scenario of his price dropping dramatically and willingness to sign a cheap one year deal a la Abreu.
ballhawk - October 16, 2009
