So what are we going to do around here for 181 days until the next Cubs regular season game? I figure many of you -- I know I am -- are interested in the postseason, and it begins today with the AL Central tiebreaker game between the Tigers and Twins in Minnesota. So I figured I'd post a game thread in the same format that I use for Cubs games. Below the fold you'll find the usual pitcher box, preview and links. Throughout the postseason I'll post game threads for those of you who want to discuss the playoffs -- though probably not with as much detail as this post.
The baseball punditocracy talks about today's game:
Rob Neyer @ ESPN: Twins all the way.
Tim Brown @ Yahoo: the Metrodome refuses to die.
Jon Paul Morosi @ FoxSports, who grew up in Michigan: history favors the Twins.
Chris DeLuca of the Chicago Sun-Times downplays the teams involved and instead whines that the White Sox should have been in it. Ugh.
From Detroit: Rick Porcello's brother talks about him.
From Minneapolis: Scott Baker is a big-game pitcher.
And finally, just to wrench this back somewhat on topic, here is Bruce Miles' analysis of the 2009 Cubs position players. Enjoy the game. My pick: the Twins; they're hot (16-4 in their last 20 games and 9-1 in their last 10 home games) and they always seem to know how to win the big ones -- notwithstanding their 1-0 loss in last year's tiebreaker with the White Sox.

| Today's Starting Pitchers | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Scott Baker is probably the Twins' most consistent starter, but he is only 1-1, 6.75 in four starts vs. the Tigers this year. He faced the Tigers last Thursday in Detroit and gave them only five hits and an unearned run in five innings. As a pitcher in the AL Central for several years, he's faced most of the Tigers many times. Curtis Granderson and Marcus Thames have both homered off him four times. Magglio Ordonez is 18-for-39 (.462) off Baker with a a pair of homers.
If the Tigers win today, Rick Porcello won't even legally be able to enjoy the champagne after -- he won't turn 21 until December 27. He has had a fine rookie year in which he has posted a 3.09 ERA vs. the Twins (but just a 1-2 record). He faced the Twins last Tuesday in Detroit and got a no-decision in a game the Twins won in extra innings. He should fear Jason Kubel, who is 8-for-11 (.727) against him; Kubel is red-hot right now, too (11-for-26 in his last seven games with 3 HR and 12 RBI).
Today's game is on TBS. Chip Caray and Ron Darling will be the announcers. Here is today's MLB.com Mediacenter.
Baseball-reference.com game preview
Please visit our SB Nation Tigers site Bless You Boys and Twins site Twinkie Town.
I'm not posting any overflow threads today; if this one gets too slow during the game, feel free to post an overflow in the FanShot section.
Discuss amongst yourselves.

Tigers 6-4 in a pretty good game.
Cubsfan Waveland - October 6, 2009
Twins win
I think the Tigers have a 0.26% chance of winning.
Nice work, Cabrera. Get help.

Haha I see what you did there.

Twins
The Twins have been my “American League” team since I saw my first game at the Metrodome in 1992. Despite the presence of ownership that won’t spend, the team finds a way to stay in contention. If you want to point to a set of fans that has truly been screwed over by baseball’s financial structure, look at the Twins. This is a team that could have a rotation led by Johan Santana, Matt Garza and Scott Baker. Imagine that rotation, with a healthy Fransisco Liriano.
Anyhow, I am firmly rooting for the Twins. They do things the right way and hopefully they can keep the momentum going and make a run through the playoffs.
dmlichte - October 6, 2009
And could have Torii Hunter playing behind them.
Shanghai Badger - October 6, 2009
Not only that...
… but they have a solid manager who knows how to get the most out of the talent he has.
Al Yellon - October 6, 2009
Gardenhire
Some may recall that the Cubs actually interviewed Ron Gardenhire when they had an opening some years ago… I believe when they ultimately hired Don Baylor. Gardenhire was a coach under Tom Kelly. Who knows what would have happened and I believe that Gardenhire has succeeded with the Twins because his style and philosophy meshes with the organization’s. I believe that this is why the Twins are a great model organization.
dmlichte - October 6, 2009
I agree, also
Gardy might have been successful as a Cub, but as others have noted recently, the Cubs seem to have no organizational philosphy.
Shanghai Badger - October 6, 2009
and the lack of talent
that the Twins have had come from their system—Mauer, Morneau, Cuddyer, numerous pitchers, etc.
Love how Gardy takes control.
socalbob - October 6, 2009
it's easier...
…for a manager to take control when the organization has ingrained a certain philosophy with their young players, and they expertly scout the players they trade or sign to be sure they fit what they are looking for.
For years, the Twins have been known to have the best scouting staff in all of baseball, and it has clearly paid dividends for them.
MPH73 - October 6, 2009
agreed
socalbob - October 6, 2009
Just because they have no organizational philosophy we agree with
doesn’t mean they don’t have one.
Draft pitchers and 5 tool players who may develop enough to trade with small market teams for emerging talent approaching a big pay day (Ramirez, Lee), sign pitchers who’ve shown promise to rehab deals (Dempster), dumpster dive (Edmunds, Ryan, Johnson) looking for treasure, and sign the biggest names in free agency to fill small voids (Soriano, Fukudome, Bradley).
I’ll call it the “Our ballpark sells out, so we can afford big ticket players and don’t need to fully develop our young players philosophy.”
N Oakley - October 6, 2009
You're right; I should have phrased that differently
I meant philosophy on how to play the game. Or methods taught throughout the system.
How do Theriot and Fontenot get to the majors without knowing how to make tag plays, Soto not knowing that you can’t pick up the ball with your mask, etc. ?
Shanghai Badger - October 6, 2009
I wasn't trying to just bust your chops, but my theory is the
organization may not expect any of the players to get to the bigs with the Cubs. They appear to treat them all as bargaining chips to acquire the future, not the future themselves.
I know I’m painting with a broad brush, but look a the top position talent touted over the last 7-8 years. Hill, Choi, Patterson, Pie. The guys who actually hit in AA an AAA, Hoffpauir and Fox are too one dimensional and too old.
The Twins know they can’t throw money at a player every year and squeeze the most out of the talent they draft. Combining their model with the occasional foray into Free Agency to fill a serious need would appear to create a talented team and as much as I despise them, the Red Sox seem to be closest to this philosophy.
I need to stop now as I’m growing depressed.
N Oakley - October 6, 2009
No, I know you weren't -- I didn't take it that way
And I thought your answer had merit, even if it was depressing.
Regarding Choi, we may never know how much the concussion affected him. Maybe he really would have had a nice career.
Shanghai Badger - October 6, 2009
Note I said "just" bust your chops.
Some chop busting was definitely intended.
N Oakley - October 6, 2009
Meh.
Shanghai Badger - October 6, 2009
Ask yourself...
…what takes the most skill;
Signing FA’s and making trades, or scouting players properly and being able to develop them to be good ML players?
The latter is much more difficult, and requires that sound philosophy people keep discussing. it also requires a talented crew of scouts, minor league coaches, development people and a GM that knows how to put the right people together to make this happen.
MPH73 - October 6, 2009
Don't need to win, either.
stuartscottslefteye - October 6, 2009 via mobile
Gotta go with the Twins.
Like dmlichte, they’ve been my AL team since I saw them in Spring Training in 1991.
I happened to meet Chuck Knoblauch the day he found out he made the team. He couldn’t have been more kind that day (which is why his troubles since make me cringe). Since I was short for my age, and he was a short, sparkplug-type 2B, I followed just about everything he did that year. The fact they won the World Series probably helped a little bit, too.
Bill Potter - October 6, 2009
If I was to put money on this one
I’d put it on the Twins. they are tough in that park
mjk83 - October 6, 2009
The Twins look tough to beat, but a chance for my childhood
team to advance after these horrific two weeks and put the baseball fork in the Hump Dome? Go Tigers, let’s get this hefty bag looking giant whitehead looking place out of the MLB list of places to play.
N Oakley - October 6, 2009
Let's go {insert name here}, Let's go {insert name here} ... clap clap clapclapclap
Some this just does not feel right, but nonetheless the game this evening should an interesting one, even if the AL was always far away and somehow mundane for me.
eths - October 6, 2009
Does anybody know why this game starts so early?
This game will have already started before most people get home and will have ended before people in the mountain and pacific time zones get home.
Chi-Fed - October 6, 2009
I have a feeling it's so the teams can get to New York and have a little bit of rest before tomorrow's game.
New York (according to reports) has chosen to play their series starting tomorrow. So, by playing early, the teams can get to NY by midnight (theoretically).
Bill Potter - October 6, 2009
That seems the most likely explanation.
It makes the most sense for the Yankees to play the series starting tomorrow, because that series has three off days (ridiculous, I think, to have three off days in a five-game series). Thus the Yankees could get through the entire series just using Sabathia, Burnett and Pettitte as starters.
Al Yellon - October 6, 2009
Go Twins!!
sue369 - October 6, 2009
un-rec!
N Oakley - October 6, 2009
Go thingies
eths - October 6, 2009
Second choice...
Obviously, I’d rather there was postseason baseball on Addison St.
I live in St. Paul, and while I’m back home after a fast morning gig on this rainy Tuesday, I’d be fairly happy if he Twins close out their last Deflato-Dome season with some winning baseball. Maybe even their third Series title in the time I’ve lived here, though I admit that’s a longshot.
GO TWINS!
MN exile - October 6, 2009
TWINS ARE GONNA KICK BUTT TONIGHT.
Best home field advantage in MLB.

TWINS ARE GONNA KICK BUTT TONIGHT.
Best home field advantage in MLB.
dtpollitt - October 6, 2009
I'm rooting against you, but heard ya the 1st time.
N Oakley - October 6, 2009
You're a Tigers fan?!
dtpollitt - October 6, 2009
Was only a Tiger fan until 1987.
Discovered NL (no DH) and the Cubs in ’87 and evolved into my current, pathetic state. Still have a soft spot for the Tigers, but not much more than the laundry remains of my childhood team. No Ernie announcing (sadly not much more Ernie period) and no Tiger stadium. They could be playing in Anaheim for as familiar as the new stadium is to me.
N Oakley - October 6, 2009
hoping a Tigers meltdown
that forces a trade of Cabrera and Granderson to the Cubs for Soriano and Bradley…….oh to dream.
I am suprised very few are rooting for the Tigers on this board.
Love Gardy and the Twins organization. They do it the right way. Tons of talent piped into their MLB team.
socalbob - October 6, 2009
Oh Bruce Miles, how smart and cognizant you are.
From Brucey’s article:
Dan
dtpollitt - October 6, 2009
Ahead of Cedeno?
Wow, that’s surprising.
Al Yellon - October 6, 2009
Cedeno was absolutely brutal in Seattle this year.
But I still would have preferred having him on the team. It’s better to pay a little bit for crap than it is to pay a lot for crap that doesn’t smell quite as bad.
Shawn Domagal-Goldman - October 6, 2009
also ...
Cedeno can at least play a decent shortstop.
elgato - October 6, 2009
Andres Blanco would have been a better choice from day one.
Al Yellon - October 6, 2009
Yes, but I don't think the Cubs knew that then.
What’s important is if he’ll be the choice from day one next season. I think he will be.
Shawn Domagal-Goldman - October 6, 2009
Agreed on all counts.
It’s just too bad the Cubs threw all that money away on Miles when the answer was right in front of them for a lot less money.
Al Yellon - October 6, 2009
Sigh...
yup.
Shawn Domagal-Goldman - October 6, 2009
Go Tigers
If they are out, then I become almost entirely indifferent about every team left.
MrNFL - October 6, 2009
Thank goodness. I thought I was the only Tigers fan here...

Or, you could post this.
Al Yellon - October 6, 2009
This is beautiful.
chilango2 - October 6, 2009
I'm a Tigers fan
… but I think the Twins will win today. They have quite a bit more momentum, and the Tigers’ pitchers are tired. The Twins probably have a better shot at giving the Yanks some trouble, too. I’ll root for anyone over the Yankees—even if that has to be St. Louis.
Blue Heron - October 6, 2009
Oh, good. That's three of us...
Zeke - October 6, 2009
GO TWINS!

Al Yellon - October 6, 2009
Doggie, Doggie, Doggie... when are you going to get your priorities in order...
ballhawk - October 6, 2009
Tigers looking good in the second - Twins could land in a real hole
eths - October 6, 2009
Tigers stranded two in the second and no runs scored - very like a 2009 Cub style inning
eths - October 6, 2009
Not until they start throwing the ball away
I will give you a "review’ of the Python show when I get back tonight. Plan to catch most of the game at a pub
before show.
Doggie Stalker - October 6, 2009
If they start throwing the ball away then they'll be very much like the...
…2006 WS Tigers.
ballhawk - October 6, 2009
Hush!
Zeke - October 6, 2009
Wonder if the Tigers care about Cabrera's drinking now?
3-0 Tigers, Cabrera hits a two run homer

It's easier to hit when you aren't hung over...
Zeke - October 6, 2009
i blame gregg if the tigers win the central
jesus christos - October 6, 2009
so the cubs...
are down by three again because of a Miguel Cabrera homer. so i guess Kerry Wood is going to tie it up with a 3 run homer. right?!

BABE RUTH WITH THE HOMER!

This MLB.com transmission is pissing me off
I gather this is not the way it works for the regular season, but having to select the camera and not being able to follow the game properly is really irritating.
chilango2 - October 6, 2009
You get to hear the director between innings
sometimes berating the cameramen.
chilango2 - October 6, 2009
are you talking about the postseason.tv thing on mlb.com?
if so, is it worth the ten bucks for the playoffs?
ballhawk - October 6, 2009
It's a coworker's
If I were stuck in the office every night, maybe it’s worth it. Otherwise, I don’t think so.
chilango2 - October 6, 2009
forget the fancy camera angles for a moment...
can you just watch the game via a regular tv feed? or is it ONLY the 4 camera angles to choose from.
I don’t have cable so I don’t get TBS, hence my questions…
ballhawk - October 6, 2009
You get eight camera angles
and unless you have a really fast connection on a good computer, it’s not viable to change the angle to see where a ball is headed to.
chilango2 - October 6, 2009
Oh, and there are no replays.
chilango2 - October 6, 2009
that was beautiful
jesus christos - October 6, 2009
I hate the Metrodome.
But I love the Minnesota Twins’ organization. Man, I wish we could replicate that.
dtpollitt - October 6, 2009
If y'all wanna take a gander at the Twins game thread...
you’d be surprised at the vitriol they spew towards their own players. People get flagged for much less around here.
chilango2 - October 6, 2009
Boy, they are harsh. Their team came back from 15 down this season, right? Nice way to show their appreciation...
Zeke - October 6, 2009
I don't think it was that many.
IIRC, it was 7.5, but I wasn’t paying much attention because I thought they were totally out for real this year.
chilango2 - October 6, 2009
I'm gonna go cause trouble...
…(whisks away…)
dtpollitt - October 6, 2009

I still think the Twins have the best chance of winning this game, but you never know…
Zeke - October 6, 2009
It's a hard-fought game.
I’m actually really nervous.
chilango2 - October 6, 2009
Me too...
Zeke - October 6, 2009
Haven't seen Carmen on the game thread so I think it's safe to post this...
If Guillen, Raburn, Cuddyer, Santiago, and Thames all hit a home run today (or some combination thereof adding up to 5), I just might finished tied for 1st in my fantasy league.
I guess that’s why they call it “fantasy” baseball…
ballhawk - October 6, 2009
Well, there's fantasy and then there's delusional...
Zeke - October 6, 2009
i lost my championship by exactly 1 point
its a cruel cruel world…
jesus christos - October 6, 2009
Bummer...
Zeke - October 6, 2009

Zeke - October 6, 2009
I propose to this community
we forget about certain people, kinda like we forgot about that jackhole who used to play SS and later juiced and got caught… what’s his name?
chilango2 - October 6, 2009
Forget who now? ;)
Zeke - October 6, 2009
Can we get Joe Nathan as closer? Let's trade Gregg....
zevkalman - October 6, 2009
Sure. Even up.

This is one hell of a game!

Boo, go Twins!

You’re kinda unpopular here tonight Zeke.
chilango2 - October 6, 2009
Eh, what else is new?
Zeke - October 6, 2009
Nah, you're good by me.
I have no problem with your liking of the Tigers and Michigan State (and probably the Lions).
chilango2 - October 6, 2009
I'm a closet Lions fan. It's just that I gave up on them years ago...
after they tore apart the run & shoot.
Zeke - October 6, 2009
Whew! On to the 9th!
Zeke - October 6, 2009
Curtis! Hits Nathan for the cycle!
Zeke - October 6, 2009
Who's doing the commentary with Chip?
chilango2 - October 6, 2009
Ron Darling.
And what a TERRIBLE 3rd strike call…
Terrible…
Zeke - October 6, 2009
The ump has been shamefully offensive
but equally bad for both sides.
chilango2 - October 6, 2009
High strikes. Lots of them.
But the call on Polanco was beyond bad.

fuck brandon inge
bheidge - October 6, 2009
Hey now...
Zeke - October 6, 2009
But to his credit, CONSISTENTLY missing them for BOTH teams...
Zeke - October 6, 2009
Brandon! YES!
Zeke - October 6, 2009
5-4 Tigers
Cubbiegoon - October 6, 2009
Inge saves the game in the bottom of 9.
And probably wins it in the top of 10.
dtpollitt - October 6, 2009
I'm out. Too heartbreaking.
chilango2 - October 6, 2009
Sorry man.
You can gloat to me all you like about yesterday’s game if it makes you feel any better.
Vermont Cubs Fan - October 6, 2009
Brandon Inge FTW!
Ok bullpen…leave the gas can in the dugout
MrNFL - October 6, 2009
You guys remember Rodney is on the mound, right?
Nothing is in the bag…
Zeke - October 6, 2009
I'll put the over/under on games the Tigers take from the Yankees at 1
with heavy action on the under
bheidge - October 6, 2009
nevermind
bheidge - October 6, 2009
I think the Yankees are going to destroy whoever wins this game.
but I want to see the Twins win anyway.
Cubbiegoon - October 6, 2009
Epic Fielding Fail
MrNFL - October 6, 2009
THIS IS MICHAEL CUDDYER
AND YOU WILL RESPECT HIM
jesus christos - October 6, 2009
wow
you have to keep that ball in front of you. Ouch
bheidge - October 6, 2009
Single doesn't hurt you
but that dive and miss might hurt the Tigers.
Cubsfan Waveland - October 6, 2009
watch the twins leave cuddyer standing at third
jesus christos - October 6, 2009
WHY WOULD YOU RISK THAT!?
Take the fuckin one-bounce single, not the error triple!!
dtpollitt - October 6, 2009
he took fielding lessons from Soriano
N Oakley - October 6, 2009
I was going to post something similiar
bheidge - October 6, 2009
LOL
CHILANGO LEFT, DIDN’T HE
dtpollitt - October 6, 2009
I'm around still.
chilango2 - October 6, 2009
or did you just come back?
bheidge - October 6, 2009
I'm on my other computer doing some work
Watching them come back and refusing to die.
chilango2 - October 6, 2009
I think I'm gonna throw up...
Zeke - October 6, 2009
Young
take a pitch, jesus.
bheidge - October 6, 2009
97 mph. Shoot. At least he's wild.
zevkalman - October 6, 2009
He's ALWAYS wild...
Zeke - October 6, 2009
I'm hopin' for a wild pitch here.
zevkalman - October 6, 2009
could happen...
Zeke - October 6, 2009
4.28 ERA for the season?
You’re not kidding.
Vermont Cubs Fan - October 6, 2009
jesus christ
jesus christos - October 6, 2009
os
bheidge - October 6, 2009
i take that back
jesus christos - October 6, 2009
yepper.
zevkalman - October 6, 2009
that sucks
N Oakley - October 6, 2009
Yikes
MrNFL - October 6, 2009
Vomit...
Zeke - October 6, 2009
5-5 tie
…..yay…..
Cubbiegoon - October 6, 2009
wow
I thought that was a DP ball
bheidge - October 6, 2009
so did Polanco
Zeke - October 6, 2009
Was that Aaron Miles playing second?
zevkalman - October 6, 2009
One of the best games of the season!!
cubsluver22 - October 6, 2009
come on punto
fly ball
jesus christos - October 6, 2009
Sac Fly
is almost out of the question for him
bheidge - October 6, 2009
a man can dream
cant he
jesus christos - October 6, 2009
Punto HR?
bheidge - October 6, 2009
I would have let that hit me
cubsluver22 - October 6, 2009
Two straight 98 mph pitches. Wow.
zevkalman - October 6, 2009
WOW!!!!!
Zeke - October 6, 2009
omg!!
cubsluver22 - October 6, 2009
Fuck
bheidge - October 6, 2009
Wow. Nice freakin' game.
zevkalman - October 6, 2009
god damn it
jesus christos - October 6, 2009
Out at home!
MrNFL - October 6, 2009
Holy crap
this game’s crazy
N Oakley - October 6, 2009
Omg
This game is freaking exciting!
cubsluver22 - October 6, 2009
Wonder what chilango would say if he was still here.
Vermont Cubs Fan - October 6, 2009
Look above.
I got a bit busy.
chilango2 - October 6, 2009
I need my eyesight checked.
And I’m just 25!
Vermont Cubs Fan - October 6, 2009
That was a Kim-like send.
Horseshit.
chilango2 - October 6, 2009
Can we send BOTH teams to the playoffs and cut one of the others? Like Boston?
Zeke - October 6, 2009
That would be agreeable with me.
Vermont Cubs Fan - October 6, 2009
Wavin Wendell at 3rd?
bad call to send him, wasnt even close. Well the slide made it close……..
bheidge - October 6, 2009
I'm not sure that was the coach.
Not a lot of time to make a decision. Besides, it was the right move. 2 outs; make them make the play.
Shanghai Badger - October 6, 2009
Another reason not to miss Chip:
“LINE DRIVE! BASE HIT!”
Uh, no, Chip. Raburn’s there.
Shanghai Badger - October 6, 2009
Liar.
Cubbiegoon - October 6, 2009
That is Chip the Liar.
not you.
Cubbiegoon - October 6, 2009
got it...
Zeke - October 6, 2009
He's not a liar. He just gets overly-excited :-)
zevkalman - October 6, 2009
Ha! I knew that. No prob
Shanghai Badger - October 6, 2009
Really. Dickhead. He can't wait for the Tigers to lose...
Zeke - October 6, 2009
He's been as bad as Marsh dude. Bad for both sides.
chilango2 - October 6, 2009
I haven't been listening to the whole game, but
Everyone thinks the nt’l announcers are against their team. Chip’s just blustery.
Shanghai Badger - October 6, 2009
I'd still rather have Chip calling all postseason games......
Instead of Buck and McCarver. Those 2 make me sick!
cubsluver22 - October 6, 2009
How about Stockton?
Shanghai Badger - October 6, 2009
Stockton = Teh Suck
MrNFL - October 6, 2009
yep
cubsluver22 - October 6, 2009
I actually like Buck and his sarcastic Dick-ness
McCarver is worthless though;
MrNFL - October 6, 2009
Wow.
chilango2 - October 6, 2009
that was a horrible send
jesus christos - October 6, 2009
Nah. Easy to say when he's out.
That was a great throw.
Shanghai Badger - October 6, 2009
ehh
line drive wasnt that deep
jesus christos - October 6, 2009
This is one of the F-ING WORST announced games I can remember in my 27 years of existence.
dtpollitt - October 6, 2009
Don't you remember last year with the Cubs on TBS?
zevkalman - October 6, 2009
And any White Sox game..........
chilango2 - October 6, 2009
YESSSSSSSSSSSS.
Shanghai Badger - October 6, 2009
No, actually, I don't.
I was drunk as shit. It was one of the most depressing series of events I can not remember.
dtpollitt - October 6, 2009
cosigned
bheidge - October 6, 2009
I should have been in a drunken stupor also during that awful series.
I can’t wait till Ryno becomes our manager.
zevkalman - October 6, 2009
I'd just gotten laid off before game 1
So I got the stupor without the drunk
Shanghai Badger - October 6, 2009
“I’d just gotten laid. I got the o without the drunk.”
There, I fixed that for you, Badger.
dtpollitt - October 6, 2009
That's kinda what I read at first.
chilango2 - October 6, 2009
Not for that series....
Shanghai Badger - October 6, 2009
Ahh! I remember you mentioning that (without your being specific).
Can’t imagine the pain of being laid off AND having to watch that series during the same week.
zevkalman - October 6, 2009
I know! How did you buy beer?!
dtpollitt - October 6, 2009
I don't live paycheck to paycheck, you know....
Besides, I had my friends buy!
Shanghai Badger - October 6, 2009
Indeed.
Yeah, I didn’t get specific about it until a couple months later.
Shanghai Badger - October 6, 2009
Funk it
I’m not leaving the office til this is done.
chilango2 - October 6, 2009
I just watched it again - the runner took too long to tag.
Shanghai Badger - October 6, 2009
THE ULTIMATE ANNOUNCING DUO.
DICK STOCKTON AND CHIP CARAY.
Cubbiegoon - October 6, 2009
LMAO.
zevkalman - October 6, 2009
Granderson
whats his BA against Lefties?
bheidge - October 6, 2009
aaron miles like
jesus christos - October 6, 2009
.180
BleedsbluinMI - October 6, 2009
Not grand.
Er, son!
Vermont Cubs Fan - October 6, 2009
I'm daydreaming at the moment....
Have a mental picture of Granderson in Cubbie Blue
cubsluver22 - October 6, 2009
ah he can stay in Detroit
he’s good but apparently he cant hit lefties, and tends to make mistakes in the OF in big games.
bheidge - October 6, 2009
you were saying???
cubsluver22 - October 6, 2009
go figure he makes a diving catch after I say that
bheidge - October 6, 2009
Do these teams
Ever run out of bullpen arms?
cubsluver22 - October 6, 2009
twins have about 2 relievers left
jesus christos - October 6, 2009
and a couple of starters
bheidge - October 6, 2009
And after that....
…maybe we get to see if Joe Mauer can pitch as well as he hits.
hip2bsquare - October 6, 2009
maybe aaron miles can pitch for them
jesus christos - October 6, 2009
40-man rosters, right?
Shanghai Badger - October 6, 2009
I was gonna say...
“How many bullpen arms do they allow in the AL??!?!”
chilango2 - October 6, 2009
Apparently, yes. Why did Rodney pitch that long?
Would you send Gregg or Marmol out to finish the 8th, then pitch the 9th, 10th, 11th AND 12th innings? I mean. come on…
Zeke - October 7, 2009
Dangerous to use so many pitchers
Twins better hope they don’t go another 3-4 innings
MrNFL - October 6, 2009
Go Twins!!
cubsluver22 - October 6, 2009
Can this game end soon?
Vermont Cubs Fan - October 6, 2009
Yes. Please. I really want to go home.
chilango2 - October 6, 2009
Like you have anything better to do?
Watch the Cubs?
dtpollitt - October 6, 2009
Props for his sig line, though.
Shanghai Badger - October 6, 2009
Ballhawk (BCB reader) is an Ohio State fan.
Vermont Cubs Fan - October 6, 2009
NO HE IS NOT!
BALLHAWK TELL ME THIS IS UNTRUE
dtpollitt - October 6, 2009
Sad, but true.
Vermont Cubs Fan - October 6, 2009
Born and raised in the Buckeye state.
oops…
Born and raised in The Buckeye state.
There – I fixed that for me… ;-)
ballhawk - October 6, 2009
Oh My God.
We are done here.
dtpollitt - October 6, 2009
I'm just kidding.
But in all seriousness, you’re my only Buckeye acquaintance.
dtpollitt - October 6, 2009
I grew up in Port Clinton, Ohio.
Small town on the shores of Lake Erie, 45 minutes from Toledo. Lots of obnoxious Michigan fans in the area, so it was very easy to become a Buckeye fan. Admiring the hell out of Woody didn’t hurt either. I absolutely loved the Woody & Bo battles back then. Classics – every one of them.
ballhawk - October 6, 2009
I bet.
Should be a good one on Saturday between Ohio State and Wisconsin.
Vermont Cubs Fan - October 6, 2009
I lived in Delaware, Ohio, for 19 months.
dtpollitt - October 6, 2009
I lived in Wisconsin for five years.
Mid-1990s. Explains where the Packers and Badgers loyalties come from.
Vermont Cubs Fan - October 6, 2009
maybe there's still time for the antedote?
N Oakley - October 6, 2009
Don't make me sing the UM fight song
(amended version)
Shanghai Badger - October 6, 2009
I
Vermont Cubs Fan - October 6, 2009
That's funny. We had our own version too.
Though I suspect your M stands for Minnesota, right?
ballhawk - October 6, 2009
Oh, no.
It might even be the same song
Shanghai Badger - October 6, 2009
I've heard that one.
Not going to say it here.
Vermont Cubs Fan - October 6, 2009
I know.
He’s ok otherwise
Shanghai Badger - October 6, 2009
I think he's just sick of listening to Chip Caray
hip2bsquare - October 6, 2009
I am at work, so I can't watch the game.
Touche!
Vermont Cubs Fan - October 6, 2009
Rodney's still in?
gulp
MrNFL - October 6, 2009
Yep. See my post above. Dumb.
Zeke - October 7, 2009
Bet that Tiger clubhouse tunnel
Is full of smoke. Bet Leyland’s smoked a pack in the last 2 innings!
cubsluver22 - October 6, 2009
Just one?
hip2bsquare - October 6, 2009
lol
cubsluver22 - October 6, 2009
What, those aren't candy cigs?
Shanghai Badger - October 6, 2009
Wow, that was NOT a strike
MrNFL - October 6, 2009
Is Cabrera a FA at year's end??
cubsluver22 - October 6, 2009
yep
bheidge - October 6, 2009
hmmm
cubsluver22 - October 6, 2009
No thanks
Orlando Cabrera is not the answer. Unless the question happens to be, “What league-average second baseman can I spend millions of dollars and a Type A draft pick to sign?”
hip2bsquare - October 6, 2009
he wont cost anyone a draft pick
its in his contract
bheidge - October 6, 2009
this ump is horrible for both teams
jesus christos - October 6, 2009
damn it
cubsluver22 - October 6, 2009
They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery...
…so let me just say I flatter the Twins SBN site (Twinkie Town) very much. ;-)
Rally vault!

ballhawk - October 6, 2009
Yeah, that's not bad.
Shanghai Badger - October 6, 2009
I've fallen in love.
zevkalman - October 6, 2009
yum
MrNFL - October 6, 2009
Bathroom Break!!
cubsluver22 - October 6, 2009
ROFL
Shanghai Badger - October 6, 2009
nice pole
BleedsbluinMI - October 6, 2009
TWSS
Shanghai Badger - October 6, 2009
You're damn right she did!
hip2bsquare - October 6, 2009
lol
dtpollitt - October 6, 2009
same girl?
bheidge - October 6, 2009
Does it matter?
dtpollitt - October 6, 2009
Rec'd
Shanghai Badger - October 6, 2009
good point
want to see her from the back?
bheidge - October 6, 2009
I'll take any angle you got.
dtpollitt - October 6, 2009
TWSS
Vermont Cubs Fan - October 6, 2009
well its
too big for the thread
bheidge - October 6, 2009
No it's not.
dtpollitt - October 6, 2009
how bout this one?
bheidge - October 6, 2009
Dang.
Vermont Cubs Fan - October 6, 2009
That's a winner right there.
hip2bsquare - October 6, 2009
Need more data.
dtpollitt - October 6, 2009
still?
bheidge - October 6, 2009
Don't know who Miss Paraguay is, but...
…here’s another angle on the original pole vault beauty.
ballhawk - October 6, 2009
FPSM
jesus christos - October 6, 2009
??????
What is that
cubsluver22 - October 6, 2009
first pitch swinging moron
jesus christos - October 6, 2009
VCF, check your email ASAP please.
chilango2 - October 6, 2009
Just got it.
Muchas gracias!
Vermont Cubs Fan - October 6, 2009
Hey hey!
MrNFL - October 6, 2009
need a double play here
bheidge - October 6, 2009
That pitch hit Inge
Ump missed it
MrNFL - October 6, 2009
So the oft-asked question.
Who should I be cheering for?
Vermont Cubs Fan - October 6, 2009
The Badgers
Shanghai Badger - October 6, 2009
Well, that goes without saying.
Got my “UW” sweat shirt ready for Saturday when we beat Ohio State.
Vermont Cubs Fan - October 6, 2009
Can you imagine if it happens?
Iowa SHOULD beat UM. Bucky could beat two top-10 teams in consecutive weeks….makes me giddy thinking about it!
Shanghai Badger - October 6, 2009
Me too!
I won’t be on BCB to talk about it.
Question: is there a SB Nation blog for us Badgers fans?
Vermont Cubs Fan - October 6, 2009
There is, but it doesn't get as much activity
http://www.buckys5thquarter.com/
Shanghai Badger - October 6, 2009
So, if I want to talk Badgers football....
Vermont Cubs Fan - October 6, 2009
I think the game threads get activity
Or you could just talk to Dan & me…
Shanghai Badger - October 6, 2009
That sounds good.
Though, I have commitments this weekend. Won’t be able to watch or figure out what’s going on in the Wisconsin-Ohio State game.
Vermont Cubs Fan - October 6, 2009
find a small radio
Shanghai Badger - October 6, 2009
The game starts as my work shift ends on Saturday.
I’ve got a test prep session in a library shortly thereafter. No such luck.
I’ll have to check the score on my cell phone during breaks in the session.
Vermont Cubs Fan - October 6, 2009
I won't be around online, Badger, until probably the 2nd half.
I have to teach Saturday until 2.
dtpollitt - October 6, 2009
I'll be glued to the TV
Shanghai Badger - October 6, 2009
This is getting me really jacked for the game.
dtpollitt - October 6, 2009
Twins of course
bheidge - October 6, 2009
Bases loaded.
Oh gosh, chilango, hide your eyes! He we go again!!!!!
Vermont Cubs Fan - October 6, 2009
wowwwwww
Nice play
cubsluver22 - October 6, 2009
wow nice play
there are a lot of things that could have went wrong there
bheidge - October 6, 2009
JOE MAUER IS AMAZING.
dtpollitt - October 6, 2009
oh yeah!!
cubsluver22 - October 6, 2009
throw strikes please
bheidge - October 6, 2009
keppel is channeling marmol
jesus christos - October 6, 2009
kkkkkk
cubsluver22 - October 6, 2009
Wow
MrNFL - October 6, 2009
wow big strikeout
This game will end in the bottom
bheidge - October 6, 2009
what a game!!
cubsluver22 - October 6, 2009
whoever wins
is screwed tomorrow
jesus christos - October 6, 2009
Against the Yankees, does it really matter?
To be honest, neither of these teams is good enough to have a chance in a short series, even if they’re not exhausted for game 1.
hip2bsquare - October 6, 2009
you are right, but the yankees rotation worries me
cc hasnt shown up in the post seasonand burnett hasnt been consistent
jesus christos - October 6, 2009
Rodney still in
MrNFL - October 6, 2009
Did Jim Leyland fall asleep or something?
hip2bsquare - October 6, 2009
leaving him in
after the single
bheidge - October 6, 2009
I did NOT understand why Leyland left him in so long.
MIND BOGGLING
Zeke - October 7, 2009
Obviously...
…he had no faith in anyone else, or the nicotine has really contricted the blood vessels in his brain.
MPH73 - October 7, 2009
Leadoff single.
Vermont Cubs Fan - October 6, 2009
When the F did Bradon Inge get forearm tattoos?
He looks like damned Eminem now.
dtpollitt - October 6, 2009
I thought he had them
for awhile
bheidge - October 6, 2009
WOOOO
jesus christos - October 6, 2009
Woo hoo!
Greggle - October 6, 2009
That's it
And now I don’t give two shits about any of the remaining 8 teams.
Go…..Rockies?
MrNFL - October 6, 2009
I don't care much about it either.
Go …. Nationals?
Vermont Cubs Fan - October 6, 2009
Sorry Zeke
BleedsbluinMI - October 6, 2009
Now, my offseason REALLY starts.
Sad, sad, sad…
Zeke - October 7, 2009
Twins win!
bheidge - October 6, 2009
IT'S OVER!
hip2bsquare - October 6, 2009
Great Game!!
cubsluver22 - October 6, 2009
the 2007 mets are laughing
jesus christos - October 6, 2009
Wow!
Just stopped by to say… that if the rest of the postseason is half as exciting as this game, we’re in for a heck of a ride.
One of the best games I have ever seen. Congrats to the Twins… and hats off to the Tigers, who played very well. As I was watching the shots of the Tigers in their dugout after the game, I thought, “We have been fans of that team. We know how that feels.”
Al Yellon - October 6, 2009
I was a good game.
Though I just can’t get over the feeling of that the Twins are going to get mowed over by the Yankees.
Cubbiegoon - October 6, 2009
especially after burning the whole 'pen
N Oakley - October 6, 2009
Don't be too sure.
The Yankees might regret not starting this on Thursday to give the winner (in this case, Twins) a chance to catch their breath, look around and start to think about what they’re facing, i.e. get nervous and psych themselves out.
Instead, the Twins are on an emotional high, gonna be the shortest 2 hour flight in history, and they’ll just be on a complete adrenaline roll all the way through tomorrow night. No time to rest means no time to have second thoughts.
I like their chances.
ballhawk - October 6, 2009
I agree.
CC Sabathia is 2-3, 7.92 in five postseason starts. If the Twins can win tomorrow night, the advantage is theirs.
Al Yellon - October 6, 2009
then they get to play two face burnett and pettite
jesus christos - October 6, 2009
Speaking of petite brunettes...
scroll back up if you want to see a couple of “aces”…
ballhawk - October 7, 2009
Very nice!
Vermont Cubs Fan - October 7, 2009
Do you know who Minnesota will be starting tomorrow night?
Vermont Cubs Fan - October 6, 2009
Jack Morris wants the ball
ballhawk - October 6, 2009
ISWYDT.
Nicely done.
Vermont Cubs Fan - October 6, 2009
He'd want it for BOTH the Tigers and Twins...
…if the Tigers had, well you know, won…
Zeke - October 7, 2009
Was a fun game thread, too
Shanghai Badger - October 6, 2009
Yes, but the Twinkie Town thread was hysterical.
I’m rooting for:
Twins
Cardinals/Rox
dtpollitt - October 6, 2009
cardinals
but why?
jesus christos - October 6, 2009
Because I love Albert Pujols.
And I have nothing against the team. I respect the rivalry we have with them. And their organization is run very, very well.
dtpollitt - October 6, 2009
Go Dodgers
bheidge - October 6, 2009
Just one more thing we disagree on Dan
Albert is great but I will always hate the Cardinals and I would even if Greg Maddux played for them.
Doggie Stalker - October 6, 2009
I just don't hate the Cardinals.
I respect them. They are a worthy opponent.
The Brewers, them, I hate them. They don’t do much of jack-squat right.
dtpollitt - October 7, 2009
game for the ages, sad to see the tigers out if the Cubs can't play.
N Oakley - October 6, 2009
definitely did not disappoint, but I would have liked to see the tigers win.
Blizzard132 - October 6, 2009
Sniff. The Tigers in the playoffs were going to get me through another week at least...
Now I have to face the Fall…leaves, raking, gutters, packing up the deck furniture, taking down the window boxes, etc. Damn it. Now I have to do some work…
Zeke - October 7, 2009
I missed a great game but I have no regrets
Monty Python show was FANTASTIC. Basically 5 performers including Jane Leeves of FRASER did classic Python sketches. They were totally brilliant. Nothing like 1000 people singing The Philosopher Song together. http://www.metrolyrics.com/the-philosophers-song-lyrics-monty-python.html.
This is a special show being done for six performances in LA & NYC to commemorate the 40th Anniversary of Monty Python. It was so great it was ALMOST worth missing a Cub playoff game but sadly I did not have to make that choice
Doggie Stalker - October 6, 2009
I wonder if someone over on the SB Nation Monty Python site ("The Fool Monty")...
