If the postseason is half as exciting as yesterday's dramatic 12-inning Twins win over the Tigers in game 163 for both of them, we are in for quite an October.
Doesn't always work out that way, of course, but we can dream, can't we? Three of the four series begin today; the Red Sox and Angels will start their series tomorrow. It will be the fourth time in the last six seasons that those two will meet in the playoffs' first round; the Red Sox have won the three previous encounters, sweeping two of them and giving the Angels a single consolation game last year. The Angels posted a better regular season record than the Red Sox, but as we Cubs fans know, you can throw those records out the window once the postseason begins.
Meanwhile, the Twins would appear to be huge underdogs against the Yankees, who won 16 more regular season games than they did and who swept the Twins in their season series (7-0). But CC Sabathia has been bad in his last four postseason starts, posting a 9.47 ERA for Cleveland and Milwaukee the last two years, and if the Twins can steal one game in Yankee Stadium, they will return to a huge home-field advantage in the Metrodome. Don't count the Twins out.
In the National League, the two series seem more evenly matched; the four teams had 95 (Dodgers), 93 (Phillies), 92 (Rockies) and 91 (Cardinals) victories in the regular season. The Dodgers and Cardinals both had outstanding pitching this year; will all those games be decided by 1-0 scores? And any time you play games at Coors Field, anything can happen. By the time that series gets to Denver this weekend, it might be snowing there.

It appears the games are blacked out to mlb.tv subscribers.
That is such BS – it’d be nice if those of us strapped to our computers could enjoy the video, too. Anyway, I’ll be tuning in to the audio of the Phillies-Rockies game this afternoon.
daver - October 7, 2009
Sigh.
Bud strikes again. What a maroon.
Al Yellon - October 7, 2009
My coworker with mlb.tv tells me
if you have the Premium tier, they’re available. I got to watch a very weird broadcast last night using his account.
chilango2 - October 7, 2009
I'm an MLB.TV Premium subscriber
And I can’t get video.
Stupid, stupid MLB
Clutch16 - October 7, 2009
I'm just noticing that too.
Audio only. Wow. Unbelievable. If this were my moneys, I’d be hella pissed.
chilango2 - October 7, 2009
MLB.TV Premium - currently showing "Commercial Break in Progress" in Europe
eths - October 7, 2009
My coworker just coughed up another $10 to get the postseason.tv scam.
MLB.TV Premium subscribers don’t qualify for video. Audio only.
chilango2 - October 7, 2009
I'm a MLB.TV Premium subscriber and I do have video!
Listened to the pre-game show on WPHT and switched to video at game time using the control in Adobe Flash player. Maybe being in Europe has something to do with it – no blackouts here.
eths - October 7, 2009
And now they just started streaming from the stadium
eths - October 7, 2009
Yeah, I take back what I said.
I’m an premium subscriber and I do seem to have video access via the postseason.tv link ballhawk mentions below.
daver - October 7, 2009
What link is this?
I have premium and only have audio?
dtpollitt - October 7, 2009
I don't have cable so I poked around mlb.com this morning
apparently there is something called postseason.tv which mlb is touting as “companion coverage” to TBS. 8 different camera angles, you pick which one you want, blah, blah, blah. According to chilango2 in last night’s game thread, it wasn’t working too well.
And even if it were, I don’t want camera angles – I want the tv feed. And would be willing to pay for it. Didn’t MLB have a special mlb.tv package just for the playoffs last year?
Just when you think Bud can’t get any marooner, he surprises us all…
ballhawk - October 7, 2009
It's a piece of junk,
but then again, if you use it as a “companion,” I guess it’s not bad at all. But this’ll be my only source for the postseason while I’m at the office. Guess it’s better than nothing. Now, if only we could get Chip to say “fisted” for every pitch…
chilango2 - October 7, 2009
We need Lovitz back
For more flouls.
Clutch16 - October 7, 2009
It is annoying and you miss a bunch of plays
Using this yesterday gives me an appreciation for the editing job the professionals do. The only way I could get it be of any use was to choose the mosaic view and have 4 different angles at once.
mrtobby - October 7, 2009
Go Phillies!!! Go Phillies!!! Go Phillies!!!
1) I was born in Philadelphia and moved to Chicago when I was 8 months old. LWDYWMTD
2) I have developed a real dislike for the Rockies during the WC race.
3) Apparently no black outs in Europe.
I hope this does mean there is a lynch mob looking for me.

eths - October 7, 2009
Is this the head of the lynch mob?
Al Yellon - October 7, 2009
A one man mob - I like it
eths - October 7, 2009
According to B-R
11 Lynchs have played ball at the major-league level: Adrian, Danny, Ed, Henry, Jack, Jerry, 2 Mikes, 2 Toms, and Walt
It’s a small mob, but enough guys to field a team with a couple of subs.
Clutch16 - October 7, 2009
Ed looks kind of angry in that photo, too.
Kind of the way the head of a mob should look.
Al Yellon - October 7, 2009
I'm running already...
eths - October 7, 2009
Expect a lot of runs in the Phils-Rockies game today
Wind is blowing from left field to right field at 35-40 mph.
PhillyCub - October 7, 2009
Wow.
And just wait till they get to Denver this weekend and it snows.
Al Yellon - October 7, 2009
Poor Bob
He has to play off Dick Stockton.
chilango2 - October 7, 2009
Seriously,
isn’t there some young talent out there in the broadcasting industry? The only thing worse than Dick Stockton doing play-by-play for football, is Dick Stockton doing play-by-play for baseball.
Even though the Cubs aren’t in it, I love playoff baseball. Watching the end of last nights game, so much excitement and intensity in a lot of those games. They just feel different watching them even on TV, maybe it is the Fall air.
slocs55 - October 7, 2009
Last night's game was great
EXCEPT for having to listen to Ron Darling. I nearly muted it, but then I wouldn’t have been able to think about the 1998 Cubs (first Cubs playoff team I watched) while listening to Chip Caray. I would put Darling in the Joe Morgan pantheon of bad baseball announcers.
mykalmorgan - October 7, 2009
I was ticked
It was still a regular-season game, technically. I wanted to listen to Dick and Bert, but noooo…
Clutch16 - October 7, 2009
But it's going to be 70 in Denver today....
….Saturday could be miserable. I’m betting they will postpone the game. But why the hate for the Rox? I’m not saying they’ll sweep the Phillies like they did in 2007, especially with Philadelphia tossing three left-handers at them. But they have a much more balanced team this year than they did two years ago. (But being a life-long Cubs’ fan, I should also realize that once you assume something, well……)
Still, Go Rox!
chucolo - October 7, 2009
I'm rooting for the Rockies in the NL
Twins-Rockies in the World Series.
chilango2 - October 7, 2009
Somewhere
Bud Selig shudders at the thought of those ratings. (Though that’s the Series I would like to see, too, for some reason)
Bill Potter - October 7, 2009
Exactly.
I was thinking that when I wrote my comment.
All I hope for is that the Twins make it. If they get knocked out, my interest will wane greatly.
chilango2 - October 7, 2009
In terms of my interest, I'd rank the AL teams I'd like to see in the World Series as such:
1. Twins
2. Red Sox (I went to school out there, I can’t help it)
3. Angels
4. Yankees
Frankly, Colorado seems like the least of 4 evils in the NL.
Bill Potter - October 7, 2009
Rockies-Angels.
But really, as long as neither the Dodgers (ugh), Phillies (ughugh), or Cardinals (ughughugh) win the NL pennant, I’ll be fine with whatever happens.
cubsforever - October 7, 2009
Is anybody having some serious issues with the site today?
503 errors galore. It keeps marking old-and-read comments as unread.
chilango2 - October 7, 2009
Yes, this is a SBN-wide issue.
They are aware of the 503 errors and are working on them.
The unread comment issue is something they did deliberately to improve performance and try to avoid more 503 errors. When the performance issues are fixed they’ll restore the functionality.
Thanks for your patience.
Al Yellon - October 7, 2009
And really soon I hope.
The unreading is drivin’ me nuts, like being in time warp it is…

The subtext is "Server Unavailable"
NEED MOAR CYCLES!
Clutch16 - October 7, 2009
OK, this is blasphemous, but...
….I have to admit that it would be fun to see Mauer and Pujols face off in a WS.
And my sense, based on Al’s theory of “the playoffs go to the team that’s hot at the right moment.” is that the Twins might just be a spoiler for da Jenkees.
And I have to agree about the MLB.TV business…..I mean, why on earth can’t they just show the TV feeds with commercials and all? I can’t see how anyone loses….oh, well.
CaughtInTheVines - October 7, 2009
I cheer for everyone to lose.
That’s right, I’m a horrible sport. I’m extremely bitter and hate watching any team (not the Cubs) win the WS.
BTW the iPhone’s At Bat app was awesome to have last night. They were doing live streaming from the game with 8 different game angles for FREE!
cubswynn - October 7, 2009
I guess I'm rooting for the rockies here.
Devin B - October 7, 2009
me too.
Cubbiegoon - October 7, 2009
Boo, hiss...
May the best team win!
eths - October 7, 2009
Ya know, the way the phils fans cheered at the first out...
I wish I woulda heard the same thing when the Cubs played last year. I just am still amazed at how dead it was.
Devin B - October 7, 2009
A lot of the season-ticket holders sold their first-round tickets to afford NLCS tix
Or so I hear – lots of corporate schmucks and no real fans, apparently.
Clutch16 - October 7, 2009
I want so bad to go to even a Cubs regular season game.
I would freaking love to be at a playoff game. No way I would be quiet after Dero hit that shot that barely made it out to right.
Devin B - October 7, 2009
hey hey hey!
Me and my lovely bride were there, fresh off of our wedding day earlier that week. NLDS Game 2 tix were one of our wedding gifts.
Thankfully, we’re still together… ;-)
ballhawk - October 7, 2009
Shoulda yelled louder :P
Clutch16 - October 7, 2009
They would have sold them for sheer greed
Post season tickets are really not that expensive so you would not need to sell one round to afford another.
Now of course if you have an EXTRA ticket and need the money that is another matter. I actually sold one pair to
a Cub fan at a fat profit but I had gotten a pair of bleachers that night.
Doggie Stalker - October 8, 2009
Ryan Howard is a gold glover.
Cubbiegoon - October 7, 2009
Badly misplayed that DP chance
eths - October 7, 2009
The Phils get out the inning unharmed.
Cubbiegoon - October 7, 2009
Still a 1-0 count on MLB-TV...
eths - October 7, 2009
Check out Victorino battling the wind
It’s kinda funny.
Clutch16 - October 7, 2009
50 to 80 seconds delay I would guesstimate
eths - October 7, 2009
On a related note
I still hate Shane Victorino. Cub-killer and Brave-killer.
Clutch16 - October 7, 2009
Do you hate him enough to pour a drink on him?
Cubbiegoon - October 7, 2009
Only if it was Coors Light
Put that stuff back in the horse, I say.
I did have a Chicago moment watching the game yesterday, though – the bar I was at (O’Learys in West Fargo) had a bunch of Goose Island Honker’s Ale that didn’t sell, so they reduced the price to a dollar per bottle. Cheap and tasty!
Clutch16 - October 7, 2009
If only Honker's Ale could ever be that cheap around here :-(
mykalmorgan - October 7, 2009
+1
And that kid who famously dumped the beer on him also agrees.
chilango2 - October 7, 2009
Go Phillies !!! Blow the Rox away !!!
eths - October 7, 2009
What happened to let the best team win?
Cubbiegoon - October 7, 2009
But the Phillies are the (second) best team, aren't they?
See my posting at the top of the thread too…
eths - October 7, 2009
The "second best" team is one that does not interfere with your "best" team whatsoever,
so it ought to be an AL team. Mine are the Twins and have been since I was 11.
chilango2 - October 7, 2009
So then I would have to pick the "SpVgg Unterhaching" because they play
eths - October 7, 2009
I'm all for Borussia Mönchengladbach
Just ‘cuz it’s fun to say.
Clutch16 - October 7, 2009
"Türkiyemspor Berlin" and "Wormatia Worms" are fun to say too
eths - October 7, 2009
More ineptness from mlb.com
Just for kicks, I clicked on the mlb.tv premium link even though I’m not a subscriber like Mr. Big Bucks Daver…
Of course, it didn’t like me and asked me to click on link so I could enter a zip code to check my blackoutnessness. And then I end up here where they do indeed have a playoff tv package… …if you’re willing to wait until 90 minutes after the game is over. WTF???
Here are the “features” of that package:
* International customers watch ALL games LIVE
* U.S. customers listen to ALL games LIVE
-choice of home and away feeds
* Real-time highlights
* Watch full game archives
(approximately 90 minutes after each game)
I’ll stick to GameDay audio ($15 for the whole season and playoffs) and get more things done. Like kibitzing here on BCB…
ballhawk - October 7, 2009
Yeah man.
This is the bullshit of all bullshits.
chilango2 - October 7, 2009
Yep, that's me: International customers
The MLB black outs strike me as rather strange. And MLB-AM is fairly incompetent, making things even worse.
eths - October 7, 2009
Save your money.
I’ve given up on the postseason.tv link I mentioned above. The multiple camera angles are…interesting. It’s basically like being AT the game – i.e., there’s not a lot of zooming or panning going on. Worst of all, it kept crapping out on me. The screen would go blank and I’d get a “video error” message. I could get it working again but got sick of the aggravation. So I’ve reverted to Gameday audio, too.
daver - October 7, 2009
Open the WPHT audio stream in the ADOBE Flash player, and then switch to video using the control in the player!!!
This gives me a standard TV broadcast without any of the “let’s play director” stuff.
eths - October 7, 2009
I don't see an option to switch to video.
Where are you seeing that?
daver - October 7, 2009
When I click on the box where it says WPHT, then a "menu" pops up and I can choose TBS-HD
The box is below the VS., which is below the GAMEDAY AUDIO logo.
I am a MLB-TV Premium subscriber, and here in Germany we do not have any blackout restrictions.
eths - October 7, 2009
Ah, I see what you mean.
I don’t get that option, being in Chicago. Thanks for trying, though!

Doggie Stalker - October 7, 2009
neither will I future Mrs. Greg Maddux
neither will I
mjk83 - October 8, 2009
Kathy Maddux might object to that.
One day I would love to meet Maddux and play him in a game of JEOPARDY ( the only thing I might have a shot at beating him at but I doubt it) but I admire his ( and his wife’s) ability to balance their family over a 25 year pro career almost as much as a admire his playing. Snippets I get off his retirement indicated he is a very content " Mr. Mom" who gets in a few rounds of golf in between dropping off his kids and picking them up.
Doggie Stalker - October 8, 2009
I was just joking about the Mrs. Maddux thing
while the current name and sig make it pretty obvious you’ve been pretty open about your love for mad dog since day 1 on this site.
He seems like he’d be a really cool guy to hang out with and I’m not surprised at all to hear that he has transitioned smoothly into retirement.

Devin B - October 7, 2009
So who should I listen to?
Phillies radio team – Scott Franzke (pbp), Larry Anderson (color)
- or -
Rockies radio team – Jack Corrigan (pbp?) and Jeff Kingery (color?)
I got the Phillies on now because they’re the home team and Larry Anderson was a real funny guy during his playing days – not sure if that carried over to his broadcasting career.
ballhawk - October 7, 2009
I'm goin' with the home Phillies broadcast.
daver - October 7, 2009
yeah - same here.
Though it does seem strange listening to a game without hearing “Geez!” or “boy oh boy…” all the time.
Wonder if I’ll get to hear a scratchy high-pitched “STRIKE THREEEE!!!!!” in the 5th inning…
ballhawk - October 7, 2009

…and we’d still hear it.
daver - October 7, 2009
I just realized why I hate the Rockies so much.
Those uniforms are horrendous.
Al Yellon - October 7, 2009
Welcome to the club...
May the good looking uniforms win!!!
eths - October 7, 2009
The Phils haven't updated their unis since the 50s
Or so it would appear. Wikipedia tells me the last time they redesigned their uniforms was 1992
Clutch16 - October 7, 2009
Which was a redesign back to an OLD design.
Al Yellon - October 7, 2009
They always strike me as a fictitious team.
daver - October 7, 2009
They should be playing hockey, still
Clutch16 - October 7, 2009
Plus, why are they named after a state?
I can understand the Twins or Rangers naming themselves after a state, since those teams represent two major cities. But it’s not like people elsewhere in Colorado wouldn’t have gone to Rockies games if they had called themselves the “Denver Rockies” or some other name with “Denver”.
Al Yellon - October 7, 2009
Not to mention
“Texas Rangers” sounds a heckuva lot more bad-ass than “Dallas Rangers”.
As for your original question, my best guess is that they were paying homage to the hockey team with the name. Why the hockey team chose that name is a question I can’t answer.
Clutch16 - October 7, 2009
So they are...
… named after a hockey team that used to be the Kansas City Scouts. That’s really something to be proud of.
Yes, there really was a KC Scouts team in the NHL. Logo:
Al Yellon - October 7, 2009
Well they also represent the fine hovels of Silt, Rifle, Parachute and the truck stop on E.Co.Road 330E.

The oddest choice was to have the caps show “CR” at a time when Denver was battling the LA Crips growing gang problem. Needless to say, the caps sold well locally and on the west coast.

Having a poor second half ( there is a surprise) so Tracy is using Hammel over him as #3 starter.
“I think the first two-thirds of the season were exceptional,” Tracy said. “Right now he’s not throwing the ball quite in the same manner. And to ignore a guy that has thrown the ball as well as Jason Hammel has thrown it since the All-Star break, I really feel is doing ourselves a disservice.”

Well in the two-team cities (LA, Chicago, NY)
Chicago has hit the most HRs – 345. NY has 339 and LA 318. Oh, and if you want to add SF/Oak to the mix, they combined for 257.
Now if you dig a little deeper, it gets really embarrassing for the Mets, seeing as how the Yankees led the majors with 244 homers. Yep, that means the entire Mets team hit only 95 homers this year. Ouch!

It’s no secret I don’t like the Yankees, but it always cracks me up when Yankee fans point to that play as being Exhibit A of the greatness that is Jeter. Can’t remember if it was that same game – if not, I’m pretty sure it was the same series – but there was a play where he went running – full speed – into the seats/railing along 3rd base line chasing a foul ball. He caught it, went tumbling over into the seats and emerged slightly bloodied IIRC. Again, I don’t like the guy, but THAT should be Exhibit A when you want to talk about how good a player he is.

Doggie Stalker - October 8, 2009
Guess I'm just watching, then
Always a bridesmaid…
Clutch16 - October 8, 2009
You'd make a good one. ;)
Vermont Cubs Fan - October 8, 2009
Yes since you were just lurking for an hour anyway
Thought you had gone too bed too.
Doggie Stalker - October 8, 2009
I've lurked around here a lot
And I’m entering this conversation for no reason.
Ace Venom - October 8, 2009
Oh great, now I'm wondering why I entered this conversation.
Vermont Cubs Fan - October 8, 2009
Jeez a bunch of lurking perverts
I think I will go check out eBay.
Doggie Stalker - October 8, 2009
I wasn't lurking, I was doing something else.
But later.
Vermont Cubs Fan - October 8, 2009
Have fun browsing eBay
I ought to high five myself for being so creepy.
Ace Venom - October 8, 2009
A BCB ménage à trois?
eths - October 8, 2009
What was that fan doing in the background?
Vermont Cubs Fan - October 8, 2009
Good Morning - What did I miss during the night
eths - October 8, 2009
Guten morgen!
Do you remember that conversation you had about strange town names?
Vermont Cubs Fan - October 8, 2009
"Yes" he answers, wondering if he needs to duck...
eths - October 8, 2009
Not quite. Here's one I took in Germany in 2002.
Vermont Cubs Fan - October 8, 2009
Nice - The name sounds like it could be in the Black Forest
eths - October 8, 2009
That is exactly where it is.
I went through there with some relatives from Reutlingen on the way to the Schloss Hohenzollern.
Vermont Cubs Fan - October 8, 2009
Twinkies didn't do too well according to the MLB...
I got to jump in the bath and go to work – enjoy the rest of the evening
eths - October 8, 2009
DeRo
I hate to see him as a Cardinal
Doggie Stalker - October 8, 2009
Heck, I hated to se him in Cleveland.
Vermont Cubs Fan - October 8, 2009
Hello Cleveland!
Ace Venom - October 8, 2009
Cards lose
Good night.
Doggie Stalker - October 8, 2009
what a joke
nice to see dodgers fans at game one of the NLDS. they were really pumped up. oh wait nevermind. that looked like a crowd from a may 1st dodgers cards game. empty seats everywhere. half the people were confused at the other half when they got up to cheer for the final outs in the ninth. pathetic.
TJ3117 - October 8, 2009
