… it was a discussion katie casey and I had in one of the other threads, something where I said that this:
would be the uniform I’d put on the Cubs now, in the current colors, except I’d make the home uni the pinstripe and the road uni the one shown on Solly Hofman above.
Wear them once for A Turn Back The Clock Day. The novelty would wear off quickly. Those pictured farther down this thread are much better for a substitute throwback.
I’d actually like to see us wear the ’40s through mid- ’50s design. No pinstripe, and not a complete circle around the logo. We wore it (with an incorrect navy cap) in that throwback game a couple years ago. I say keep the cap we have now, but switch the rest of the iniform:
The Twins’ new unis look great! I noticed the inaugural season patch uses the Obama font (Gotham). Looks nice all around.
I’m fond of our pinstripes, but I’d like to try this one out. Very few teams have that much white space without any piping or patches— I think the Cardinals and the Dodgers are the only ones, and both of those teams have large script designs that cover the entire chest (not to mention the Dodgers’ red number on the front). I think this uniform would really stand out. At least as an alternate. I’d even take a cream version.
The uni! I like the pinstripes but for some reason I always think we need to drop the pinstripes because all the pinstripe luck is used up by that team in NY. Also the road unis always make me think of the Dodgers so going back to a unique Cub Uniform works for me.
But that has got to be the biggest block of wood (so to speak) posing as a bat that I have ever seen. How do you hold something like that, let alone swing it. All right kids, have at it :)
Until I read it I had no idea it was such a dramatic close season neck and neck between three teams. It really paints a vivid picture of what it was like back then. It’s about more than just the games-the politics, the gambling, etc. that was going on. I rarely recommend a book, but this one was really good.
You click the little American flag up at the top right and choose “show character palette.” All sorts of handy things in there.
I read that review at the time, and added it to my Amazon list so I wouldn’t forget about it. I actually have two large Cubs books (Golenbock’s “Wrigleyville” and Glenn Stout’s “The Cubs”) as well as a few others (Glory of Their Times, a Satchel Paige biography) that I need to read before I go about acquiring new ones.
(From about ten years ago). So I can recommend. I still favor the ‘50s design, though. Something about that version of the Cubs logo that I like— it’s fully enclosed, but not in such a fat circle.
I say we start a BCB campaign for a historical alternate uniform! Whaddaya say? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?
Hmmm...
Well it’s not Cap Anson (because he’s wearing a Cubs’ logo) and it’s not Mordecai Brown (because he’s got all his fingers)…

It’s Solly Hofman. Definitely Solly Hofman.

DINGDINGDING!
We have a winner. Photo was taken in 1909. Hofman was part of perhaps the most famous play in Cubs history. Details here.

Dang you beat me!
Al, that’s the 1909 uniform you were talking about liking the other day, isn’t it?
katie casey - November 21, 2009
Yep, that's the one.
Only I’d use that one for the road uniform, and the other one (the pinstripe one) at home.
Al Yellon - November 21, 2009
Oh no,
did I miss a uniform-related post? Is ownership doing something I should know about?

No...

Yes.
I like that. It’s different — no team does that today — and it’s a nod to history.

Just some wishful thinking in a fanshot about the Twins new uniforms.

That’s a cool looking uniform too. I’m a fan of the stirrups. I think I’d miss pinstripes at home though.

I love seeing the stirrups. I wish MLB would ban the uniform pants dragging the ground look. It looks so sloppy and unprofessional.

Oy!
I think the Cubs could summon some of that pinstripe-luck if they spent another $60million as NY does.
OrangeGore - November 22, 2009
Uniforms from this era are much sharper
and have a clean look. The uniforms from the turn of the 20th Century are just too old. These would be very nice alternate uniforms

That table leg lumber has to be the most awesome bat I’ve ever seen. It makes Soriano’s bat look like a twig. I stand in awe.

Bet they didn’t have the broken bat problem that we have now.

A Slurpee™ from the 7-11 next time I make it to Wrigley?
Looking at his state now from 1908. Played center, first and second. I really need to hit the books on the 1908 club.

I just copied/pasted it.
