You May Notice Something Different About BCB This Morning

"Hmmm. BCB is different today!"

"Hmmm. BCB is different today!"

Early this morning, the SB Nation tech team rolled out some layout and font changes to BCB and the other SBN sites.

I'd like your feedback on how it looks, and I'll make sure the tech folks have a look at your comments.

Note: they are already aware of the spacing -- or, non-spacing -- issue between paragraphs in comments, and are working on a fix.

So far I like it.

It feels cleaner and lighter.

One thing I visually am not a fan of is the layout of the last 2 posts (with the photo in the top left and text starting below it). Lots of white space being wasted. Why not align the photo to the top right and have the text start in the top left. Then just have the text wrap around the photo. It keeps the user from having to scroll to start reading.

also...

what’s the point of having the user click on the photo above if it opens at the same size?

it’d be nice if the photo opened in a shadow box or something. Have it open in the existing window, and then making the user click back in their browser to return to the story isn’t the best user experience.

Ok… the Web Designer will now stop. Thank you.

I usually do wrap arounds.

The issue with the last two posts about that is that there wasn’t enough text in the post for it to wrap completely around the photo. If I do wrap-around without enough text, it looks weird — there would be even more white space.

I like it!

When I was on here earlier I thought “What the ??” I thought someone messed with my computer settings. A different look now and then keeps us on our toes. 2010 will be a different look for the Cubs, good way to start things off.

Not a HUGE fan, but not repulsed either.

We’ll see what happens when they put an ad in the background.

My “z” key function works fine today. The only issue I have is with the BoA animated ads. They slow the load time.

It'll leave some weird holes in page design once in a while...

… and i’m fully aware using it undermines Al’s revenue prospects here, but you may want to look in to this:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865

FWIW, i have it set up to block ads internet wide, and then i turn it off for sites i actually support (like BCB) and then use it to spot block really annoying ads on those sites, like the slow loading BoA ones you speak of. Basically i end up rewarding sites i appreciate that choose to not abuse my eyes and intelligence with stupid marketing.

He made the “can’t wait for it to end” comments after his start on Saturday. The article says he “clarified” them after game 5 — last night.

It's ambiguous

It reads as if the clarifying statement was last night, but that the 30 minute conversation could have been earlier – especially when it says that he “also” looked forward to the possibility of a Game 7 start.

about my “z” key not woring (Using IE8.0.6). I’m sure they’re working on it though. :)

While it isn’t a page design I would’ve chosen, it’s not terrible either. My only criticism would be that at least in the few posts I’ve seen so far on the main page, it feels to me like it lacks a bit of design cohesion. Reminds me of a content board that you use when you’re laying out design ideas, before you’ve finalized). Subtle color shades as background can sometimes help with that. I also think the line breaks are a bit oversized, adding to the “floating” feeling of the text.

That said, this is my design background making me nitpick. I’m happy with whatever so long as the page loads and doesn’t make my eyes bleed (well, anything other than Cubbie Blue) :-p

Al, this new SBN incarnation isn't any good...

It doesn’t have a “DeRo back to the Cubs” font. Could you ask them to fix that?

Todays impressive Mesa Box

Well alas Mesa lost 2-1 but Castro was 2-4 with a HR and a triple and Vitters was 3-4 ( singles) but what REALLY stands out in the box is Russell. He pitched one scoreless inning striking out two and throwing only SEVEN pitches all strikes.. I am pretty sure the only way who could do that is strike out two guys on 3 pitches and get the third out on one pitch. Parker also had a scoreless inning and only threw 8 pitches. Ok just an AFL game but I like it.

Minor complaint

In my “bookmarks” list, I used to have a cool BCB logo. Now on all my SBNation sites I have a red star on a black background. Makes my wife think I’m communist.

yeah

i hate it. but… i’m picky. too much white space. needs more definition. the 3 column look has never realy been my favorite but without any kind of border between them it drives my eye a little nuts.

not that i’m here much in the offseason anyway.
