This is the first World Series that's gone this far in six years, since 2003 -- also involving the Yankees, who lost to the Marlins in six games that year.
Joe Girardi, whose management of his pitching staff has come under justified criticism during the postseason, will roll the dice and have Andy Pettitte start on three days' rest tonight -- something Pettitte hasn't done since 2007, and that was a strange circumstance where he threw four innings in a start, pitched an inning of relief with two days' rest, then started again with one day off. (See Pettitte's 2007 game log for details; it happened in April.)
Pedro Martinez will go for the Phillies. Pedro pitched well enough to win in game two; that day, A. J. Burnett shut the Philly offense down. Meanwhile, the Phillies hit Pettitte pretty hard in game three on Saturday; Jayson Werth homered off him twice and Pettitte also issued three walks in six innings, throwing 104 pitches, a Zambrano-like outing. If the Phillies are patient tonight, I believe we'll see one last 2009 game tomorrow, and Girardi will have to go with yet another pitcher on three days' rest, CC Sabathia, going on three days' rest for the second time in this series after having not done that all season. Sabathia is approaching 270 innings pitched this season; that might be too many even for a "horse" like him.
It'd be nice to see a seven-game World Series, no matter who wins. We don't get to see enough winner-take-all games in baseball; in the last ten seasons, going back to 2000, there have been only 13 such games in all the playoff rounds, out of 70 postseason series.

Phillies at Yankees, 6:57 pm CDT. Yankees lead series 3-2. TV: Fox. Announcers: Joe Buck and Tim McCarver.

agreed on a Game 7, Al
Let’s go Phils!
elgato - November 4, 2009
Go Philly and let it all ride on game #7!
Zeke - November 4, 2009
Two of those games involved the Cubs
I agree – a game 7 would be great. I suppose if the Yankees win, they can combine the parade with Macy’s . . . seems like it’s the next day, anyway . . . .
Shanghai Badger - November 4, 2009
Yes. Inflate CC Sabathia with some (OK, a LOT) of helium...
…and let kids walk down the street with him tethered on long ropes like a parade balloon…
Zeke - November 4, 2009
But for God's sake don't give them any pins...
eths - November 4, 2009
Will The Yankees Choke?
YES
and tomorrow
YES
Go Phillies!
eths - November 4, 2009
Regarding choking, remember ...

Aw hell, I was wrong about the choke...

People were criticizing Manuel for not starting Lee
I think he did the right thing, 20/20 hindsight of course, but Girardi did screw up and should have went with Gaudin
DTJchris - November 4, 2009
Possibly.
But by not pitching him on short rest, he will not be able start game 7. Time will tell.
DMCub - November 4, 2009
Just a question, why do you all hate so much the Yankees ?
Be the Yankees isn’t the goal of all the 29 other franchises ?
julolo - November 4, 2009
I don't hate the Yankees per se
1) I was born in Philadelphia
2) I dislike the AL, mainly because of the DH
3) I’ve never “liked” New York as a city
So if I can’t root for the Cubs, then the Phillies are my second choice. If the series was the Cards vs. the Yankees, then my answer would, in all likelihood, be very different.
eths - November 4, 2009 via mobile
Because they are the evil empire
and represent all that is bad in an ecomony and a game where you can spend more moiney that anyone else (by far) in an attempt to buy a championship.
Ihatethecards - November 4, 2009
This is known in some circles as "capitalism"....
it’s really not so evil.
santoswoodenlegs - November 4, 2009
+1
cubsforever - November 4, 2009
It is capitalism, but in sports, emphasis is on
competition, fair play, and one set of rules.
In a league famous for segregation, the reserve clause, draft for domestic players, soft salary caps, a government sponsored monopoly, gerrymandered broadcast rights, 25 man rosters, Type A/B free agents, Rule V Draft, and no beer sales after the 7th inning stretch; what does capitalism have to do with Major League Baseball?
N Oakley - November 4, 2009
There are not a different set of rules for how the Yankess are allowed to spend their money.
They have certain advantages that other organizations do not, but you cannot simply say that because these advantages exist they are “not playing fair”. The New York Yankees have built a fanbase in the same market as the Mets, yet no one labels the Mets as an “evil empire”. I bristle at this ever prevalent idea that being good/successful at something is grounds for punishment.
santoswoodenlegs - November 4, 2009
Well...
Every few years, you can look and say, “Oh. The Yankees are in the mix again.” I hate that I can’t say it about the Cubs.
Ace Venom - November 4, 2009
More like every few years you can look and say,
“Oh. The Yankees aren’t in the mix. Weird.”
That’s why I hate them.
mykalmorgan - November 4, 2009
No, that's not the goal.
Being the Red Sox is the goal.
daver - November 4, 2009
And i also think we can’t laugh at the Yankees choking… because we’re cubs fans, remember ?
julolo - November 4, 2009
you know for all the Cubs choke jobs
They never blew a 3-0 lead. A 3-1 lead sure, but not a 3-0 lead.
nji232 - November 4, 2009
So we have that going for us
Shanghai Badger - November 4, 2009
hell yeah!
jesus christos - November 4, 2009
I don't know if they will choke...
…but they may get beat.
MPH73 - November 4, 2009
The Philly bullpen
Could be their undoing tonight, unfortunately. Manuel doesn’t really trust any of them, and Lidge is a total nightmare.
Pedro will go 6…maybe 7 innings tonight.
Hope the Phils brought the heavy lumber to NY. Howard needs to wake up at the dish…can’t rely on Chase “Mr. November” Utley to do it alone.
Canadian Cubs Fan - November 4, 2009
I predict Ibanez will have a big night....
and this will cause me to grit my teeth and curse MB’s signing under my breath.

While Milton Bradley laughs his way to the bank
Ace Venom - November 4, 2009
Sure.
But I have accepted the fact that he fleeced all of us who bought tickets, beers and paraphernalia and moved on. There’s nothing we can [lawfully] do anymore but hope for an improved 2010.
chilango2 - November 4, 2009
I seriously doubt Milton laughs that much...
santoswoodenlegs - November 4, 2009
I'm sure Milton laughs
But what he laughs at is not funny, e.g. Roseanne Bar.
Ace Venom - November 4, 2009
...the "life-alert" lady, kids in wheelchairs, Paul Sullivan's haircut....
wait, that last one is funny.
santoswoodenlegs - November 4, 2009
Now you're telling me he gets it cut? Really?
N Oakley - November 4, 2009
I'm not consumed with angst over it...
just annoyed when I’m reminded of how much better the other alternative would have been.
santoswoodenlegs - November 4, 2009
Of the 4 options last offseason
Bradley, Abreu, Dunn, and Ibanez…Hendry picked the worst one. Many people saw it coming, too. I was hopeful at the time, and Iike everyone else, disappointed by the outcome.
You dump him, you live, you learn.
Canadian Cubs Fan - November 4, 2009
Your compatriot thinks alike:
By the way, why did she sing the National Anthem the other night? I imagine if I sang “Oh, Canada,” not too many people would be happy.

Al Yellon - November 4, 2009
Also, the aerial photo of Yankee Stadium on that link...
… is the old Yankee Stadium.
Al Yellon - November 4, 2009
Cliff Lee and CC Sabathia have pitched an almost identical amount of innings
over the last two seasons. CC gets called a “horse,” but Lee has been just as durable. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Cliff Lee get a few innings in Game 7 (if necessary). Lee may be older, but he also has about 700 fewer MLB IP…a benefit of delayed success?
But really, I’m not really sure what to say about Girardi’s rotation. He’s taken a risk for which he’ll be celebrated if it works out and castigated if the Yankees wind up losing. That’s a rare move for a modern manager.
Would you go with your three best starters maybe not at their best, or risk putting Chad Gaudin or Sergio Mitre out there? As Cubs fans, we should know that that choice isn’t as hard as it seems.
What’s ridiculous to me is that the YANKEES are in that position. Seriously, those are their options? I know that Chien-Ming Wang was terrible/injured and Phil Hughes was moved to the bullpen and that Joba Chamberlain was deemed not good enough to start in the postseason (HE’S ONLY 24)…but I’m totally hoping that Pettite and Sabathia are terrible for the schadenfreude factor. $208,097,414 in salary and their best 4th starter options for the playoffs are Chad Gaudin and Sergio Mitre.
I know Burnett said short rest didn’t have anything to do with his pitching only 2 innings in Game 5…but are we really going to believe that?
mykalmorgan - November 4, 2009
Well, I actually picked the Yankees in six.
So I’m kinda hoping they win tonight…just so I’m right. I do agree that, from a purely baseball fan’s perspective, a seven-game series would give us all the maximum return on investment.
daver - November 4, 2009
I'm hoping the Phillies win tonight
because I can’t watch tonight, but can tomorrow night. I want to be able to witness the last meaningful baseball for the next 150 days!
mykalmorgan - November 4, 2009
Ahem.

For as disappointing of a season as it was for us Cubs fans....
…and as boring as the regular season was overall, the WS is paying us back right now.
I am hoping for a Game 7 with Mariano Rivera on the mound and Chase Utley at the plate with everything on the line!

I have a new hope for 2010...
If the Cubs can’t be in the World Series next year, then I want the Yankees and Cardinals to meet. I realize on the surface that sounds like a Cubs fan’s nightmare, but hear me out.
I think Joe Buck and Tim McCarver would hyperventilate so much they’d permanently injure themselves. I mean, they wouldn’t know what to do – they’d be torn between their manlove for ARod/Jeter and their manlove for Tony/Pujols. I truly believe they’d end up like those fembots in Austin Powers – heads exploding and everything.
Now if only we can figure out how to get Joe Morgan in the booth with them…
ballhawk - November 4, 2009
It would go to 26 innings in Game 7, each team would run of pitchers and bench players...
and after a short meeting with the Umpires and Network Executives….Selig would call it a tie and both teams would share a WS title.
santoswoodenlegs - November 4, 2009
Worst part about this
Jerry Hairston Jr and Chad Gaudin are gonna get World Series Rings….and we thought it was a farce when Scott Eyre got one last year. Ugggh…I should be looking forward to Spring Training starting up again next year but this season left such a sour taste in my mouth. Not as bad as 2004-05, but still pretty bad.

This thread sounds like a bunch of small market fans….the Cubs have the money, the resources, the fans base. It’s going to be our turn eventually.
Sounds like a bunch of whiny Padres fans. The Yankees played by the rules as MLB sets them up. Big market teams SHOULD have advantages, and the Cubs, under new ownership should start taking advantage of this.
San Diego Smooth Jazz Man - November 4, 2009

Pretty easy to win a World Series when you outbid everyone for the best free agents on the market
We didn’t have that kind of money to throw around. How much better would we have been with just one of those players? Give me a break.
Ace Venom - November 4, 2009
So freaking what?
Are they not playing by the rules?
San Diego Smooth Jazz Man - November 4, 2009

San Diego Smooth Jazz Man - November 4, 2009
You're making an argument nobody else here has brought up.
I’m bitching because I don’t like the Yankees’ 27 championships, A-Rod, etc. Nobody here has been arguing “Man, we need to spend more money like the Yankees!” The argument that we sound like a small-market team could be true for any other 29 baseball teams, it is not exclusive to Cubs fans.
dtpollitt - November 4, 2009
A third possibility for the vote
Could not care one way or the other
eths - November 5, 2009 via mobile
Truly, this sounds like Padres
fans whining about the big bad Cubs and their fans taking over Petco park and it isn’t fair…..
This ain’t fair. We know that. But damn it, this franchise has done things right and spent the money they need to spend on what they needed.
Until MLB tells them to stop it, that’s the way it is.
And I will contend the Cubs COULD be the Yankees of the National League in the future.
San Diego Smooth Jazz Man - November 4, 2009
Our forays into free agency generally don't work
That and the Yankees can outbid us for the best free agents. Do you see what’s happening here?
Ace Venom - November 4, 2009
Its our own fault for our free agency forays not working
But as you say the top candidates go to the Yankees if they want them. No Questions asked.
AussieCub - November 4, 2009
where are the Cubs going to get the money to spend like the Yankees?
Based on his opening remarks Ricketts says…
ballhawk - November 4, 2009
Ok, then why do you care so much if
the plight of the Cubs, as you seem to think — is hopeless?
As Al once asked, why are you here??
San Diego Smooth Jazz Man - November 4, 2009
The fool's hope that it actually happens
I don’t want to miss it.
Ace Venom - November 4, 2009
The plight of the Cub isn't hopeless.
Its just much more likely the Yankees are going to win because they outspend EVERYONE else.
If the Cubs get smart about recruitment and development they are a better chance of overcoming those odds, as other teams have. But they won’t outspend the Yanks.

…but continuing his train of thought, let’s just say that starting tomorrow morning and every morning after that, Tom Ricketts sits down at his desk at 1060 W. Addison and ponders… WWYD?
Well for 2010, that means…
Sign Holliday to play LF – release Soriano and eat the contract. It’s only money, right?
Sign Cameron to play CF
Sign Valverde to close
Sign Lackey to replace Harden.
And then in 2011?
Sign Pujols to play 1B
Sign Crawford to play CF – eat whatever’s left of Cameron’s deal or just put him on the bench
Sign Mauer to play C – sorry Sue…
Sign Halladay to replace Lilly – nothing is bigger than the Yankee way; not even Ted…
So that’d be…
rf – Dome
c – Mauer
1b – Pujols
3b – ARam
cf – Crawford
lf – Holliday
2b – Theriot
ss – Castro
and a rotation of Halladay, Lackey, Z, Dempster, and Wells, with Marmol & Grabow to set up and Valverde to close.
Works for me…

I’m gonna make fun of you in the FanPost just for this.

Oh, and I almost forgot...
LaRussa takes over in the dugout in 2011, and of course, brings Duncan with him.
And starting next year, during the 7th inning stretch, they’ll set up a little stage near home plate with red carpet and microphone for the celebrity singer du jour. And no one in the bleachers will be permitted to drink during the singing. Sure it will add to the game time, but hey – it’s tradition!

After that orgy of spending/eating $...why the HELL is Theriot still on the team?

you've got the start of a parody song there -
Roger Daltrey would probably sing it too.
