2009 SBNation Awards: Manager Of The Year

At the end of the regular season, all the SBN blogs cast their ballots for the same awards given out by the BBWAA. To make the vote comparable to the BBWAA vote, each site was given two votes, and NL blogs voted only for NL teams, AL blogs for AL teams. (And yes, I'm as puzzled as you will be to see a second-place vote for John Russell.) For Manager of the Year, Rookie of the Year, and Cy Young, we voted for the top three and points are given as 5-3-1. For MVP, we voted for the top 10 and points are awarded as follows, 1st through 10th: 14-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1. Ballots were due the day after the regular season ended, so playoff performances and team results have no bearing on this voting.

As has been the case the last three years, I gave the second BCB ballot to Mike, who draws all the cartoons here. Today, I present the SBN Managers of the Year; after the jump you'll find the results for both the AL and NL balloting, and here are the two BCB ballots:

Al: 1) Jim Tracy 2) Tony LaRussa 3) Bruce Bochy Mike: 1) Jim Tracy 2) Tony LaRussa 3) Charlie Manuel

The schedule for the rest of the week is:

Tuesday 11/10: Rookie of the Year Wednesday 11/11: Cy Young Award Thursday 11/12: MVP

That AL ballot is a joke. Girardi 4th for doing what, exactly? Leading the pre-season favorites and the richest team in MLB to the playoffs? Gardenhire should be first, but Scioscia is a fine replacement.

Hmm. Jim Tracy. Isn't he the guy Pittsburgh ran out of town?
Funny how that happens.

I believe both Joe Torre and Terry Francona were ran out of town by their respsective teams and they then went to the win multiple World Series Championships.

So Dusty's next!
quick

someone run ryno out of town and then invite him back!

Interesting...

…you don’t think it had anything to do with the players they had, do you?

Jim Riggleman should get a vote for watching every Nats game...
Seriously?

Bud Black? John Russell?

Ridiculous.

OT: Stats help

Sorry to hijack this thread a little, but I’m looking for a little guidance. If I’m looking to pull up numbers on a specific position, what is my best bet for going about that? I’m trying to look at 2009 stats/rankings (both offense and defense) for Centerfielders around all of baseball. I took a quick look at MLB.com & Baseball Reference, but nothing jumped out at me. Maybe I’m missing it. Thanks to anyone who can point me in the right direction.

Surprisingly enough, espn.com might have what you're looking for

Give this link a look-see:
http://espn.go.com/mlb/stats/fielding/_/position/cf/order/true

Just remember to apply a counter-hype deflation factor of at least .85 on any Red Sox or Yankee player… ;-)

mlbtraderumors:

A very interesting idea is being reported by Ken Rosenthal: a three-way deal, with Milton Bradley going to the Blue Jays, Luis Castillo to the Cubs, and Lyle Overbay to the Mets. Rosenthal said “The teams indeed have discussed the framework of such a deal, though not in direct fashion, according to major-league sources.”

Well.....there's a short-term leadoff bat for the Cubs in that deal.

But still looking for that big LH bat Lou wants (and frankly, is needed).

ADAM LIND!!!!!

:D

sorry - the only place Adam Lind is moving to is about 45 feet to his left

If Toronto does trade Overbay, supposedly Lind will move over and play first.

But wait a sec… we may be in the market for a 1st baseman in 2011… Hmm… maybe the new Toronto GM is laying the groundwork for a future deal?

IT"S PRE-HAPPENING!!!??!!?!?!?!!

how can ADAM LIND become our 1b when pujols is going to be our 1b?
well, duh....

…it’s called a “platoon”!

sheesh… have to explain everything to you young whippersnappers…

maybe we can move soriano to 2b

and LIND to LF

That's interesting.

Hm. I’d guess we’d have to pay approximately the difference between Bradley and Castillo’s salaries to do that deal… I think that puts it roughly in the same class as the Rowand idea, maybe with a little less downside (Castillo has 2 years left, Rowand 3; Rowand has had injury problems and a penchant for running into fences) and probably less upside (Rowand is a couple years younger, has been a good hitter in the past).

I'm not interested in Castillo.

And I don’t think the Jays are really interested in Bradley, either.

These awards...

…are very fleeting to say the least.

If I recall, didn’t Hurdle win the year the Rockies made the WS? There are a lot of good managers who rarely sniff these awards, and there are also some mediocre ones who win them.

Do the winners receive a major award?

Only in the Italian League
Fra-Gil-E! (clap clap clapclapclap)
