Hi.
Over the last few weeks I've noticed we have quite a few new posters here.
So first, I'd like to welcome everyone who's new and let you know that we welcome all views about the Cubs and baseball, whether you're in high school and just beginning to follow the team, whether you're someone (like me) whose Cub fandom goes back to the days of Santo, Williams and Banks, whether you are heavily into statistical analysis or not, everyone is welcome here.
What is not welcome are personal attacks. You can disagree with someone's position on a topic without name-calling or profanity. I realize that the occasional dirty word is going to slip out during a heated game thread -- that's understandable. But in ordinary discourse here -- keep it clean.
Follow me after the jump for links to a number of posts that have been made here over the last few years that are still relevant to formatting posts, where things are here, and where your post should (and shouldn't) go.

The first thing every new poster should do -- and also, some of you who have been here a while, too, because I've updated them -- is read the BCB Community Guidelines. These are designed to be guidelines, not hard, rigid rules. As I said, everyone is welcome here -- as long as you treat everyone else well. Please remember that behind every post and comment here is a real, live, breathing human being like yourself. I think these are the most important words to remember, words you all see and agree to when you first sign up:
When posting at this blog, please follow this one simple rule: Before hitting "post" to post your remarks, ask yourself: "Would I be embarrassed to say this in front of strangers who were physically present in the room with me and could respond to my face?" If the answer is "yes," then don't post. BCB encourages and welcomes all opinions, no matter how strong; however, personal attacks, vulgarity, and other uncivilized forms of expression are not welcome.
Not too onerous, I wouldn't think.
Now, let's move on to some posts that will help you format the things you want to post here and find out where the best place to put them is.
Thanks for reading through these; it will make the site look better, and make your own posts better. All of these posts are permanently located on the right sidebar under "BCB Specials & Site Info" to make them easy to find whenever you need them.
Here's to a great 2010 for BCB and the Cubs!

Al, I like that you do these posts and find them necessary
But to really get a good welcoming experience, you should have BLou do these.
Happy New Years to all
Musicdude10 - December 31, 2009
Trying to "thin the herd" are we?
Zeke - December 31, 2009
I feel like if you were a REAL Cubs fan you'd know about this site by now
That and I just don’t like people. Especially that Al character
Musicdude10 - December 31, 2009
And then have Worf give the rebuttal... ;-)
ballhawk - December 31, 2009
Give me banning powers for 24 hours
and I will change the world!
Worf - December 31, 2009
Since 4:45 AM we are banning back against...
eths - December 31, 2009 via mobile
Oh gosh ...
That would be like am/pm … Too Much Good Stuff!
Vermont Cubs Fan - December 31, 2009
....and never ever post something like...
…“Well, Pujols hit a HR to beat us, but I guess that’s okay because he’s on my fantasy team” because…
carmen_fanzone - December 31, 2009
Dude mah fantasy team is sick nastay
Aaron Miles for Pujols!!!
Musicdude10 - December 31, 2009
I really dislike fantasy teams.
I don’t understand it. Runs counter to my upbringing but then again, I’m old school.
To each his or her own, I guess…
Zeke - December 31, 2009
Exactly, the only fantasies allowed here
are dreaming of budget flexibility, playoff victories, gold glove all star shortstops (from the system at league minimum salaries of course) and occasional regression to certain player wives.
There are blogs for fantasy baseball, if that’s what you want, go there.
N Oakley - December 31, 2009
PV!
drewishdrewid - December 31, 2009
Dammit Drew,
go to that fantasy site if you want to discuss drafting a soutside pitcher for your fantasy team. ;)

New Years Resolution at BCB
I have a couple for your consideration.
#1. Enough BLou bashing. Even when the guy posts non-confrontational, normal comments, people jump down his throat. It’s ridiculous. Also, BLou, play nice. Can’t we all just get along?
#2. I propose we make this the year we don’t trash the Cubs beat reporters. Sullivan, Muskat, Rogers, and the gang are far from perfect. However, if we were under the gun to come up with something on daily basis, I’m sure not everything published would get us a Pulitzer.
That said, I love coming here. Thanks Al for all the hard work, and let’s hope 2010 is a little better than 2009…like maybe 8 or 9 wins better in the regular season?
Canadian Cubs Fan - December 31, 2009
They can win 83 games again in 2010...
… as long as that gets them in the playoffs and they win 11 more.
Al Yellon - December 31, 2009
+2010
Zeke - December 31, 2009
Good point.
Canadian Cubs Fan - December 31, 2009
2006 Cardinals
memphiscub - December 31, 2009
Exactly.
Al Yellon - December 31, 2009
Errr....
BLou is a +1 at the site because casual fans know his name. Ironically, Al is also a +1 with this being his site.
Dammit, I’m already making fun of Rogers.
However, it’s still 2009 so reply to this comment to get your BLou, Sullivan, Robers, Muskat comments out of your system so you can move forward with a clean slate. j/k
N Oakley - December 31, 2009
Well said Canadian
I know that BLou is a lightning rod on this site but the obsession that some posters have with him is really ridiculous.
bluekoolaide - December 31, 2009
Thanks
Plus, when people lose it on BLou, I think he totally gets off on it, so they’re only making it worse. We’re all just fans here with the same end goal…zeroes on the Eamus Catuli sign.
Canadian Cubs Fan - December 31, 2009
Question:
So when they going to add Spell/Format checking?
gaclaudy - December 31, 2009
That's what the preview button is for.
Al Yellon - December 31, 2009
Yeah, but the same idiot moving too fast is the
same une too speel chck.
N Oakley - December 31, 2009
That would be me.
gaclaudy - December 31, 2009
The time has come for someone to put his foot down.
And that foot is me!

And no more DeRosa posts!
He’s gone!
dtpollitt - December 31, 2009
at least until the trade deadline
N Oakley - December 31, 2009
Hmmm....
Jim Hendry brought up his name today, comparing him to Byrd coming from Texas. How can we forget about him?
DeRoMyHero - December 31, 2009
Oh, no - Zombie DeRosa!
Run, run!
ClarkFan - January 1, 2010
I heard Brian Roberts
is going to be a Cub.
Josh Timmers - December 31, 2009
But what will NBF do, then?
Clutch16 - December 31, 2009
No matter what,
I’m never changing my avatar.
Not Bruce Froemming - January 2, 2010
Thanks for the reminder
The three year contract for Byrd has me filled with profanity.
Nibbles - December 31, 2009
LOL-Etiquette on THIS site??
I tried posting here for a while, but this site is full of inane, Preschool-level, personal bashing.
Every post disintegrates into ages-old personal animosities. Dominated by a few people who apparently have no life and sit at their computers, where their whole universe revolves around waiting for a chance to bash the next guy!
I came here today just to read commentary about the new signing, but after 5 minutes I’m already sick of scanning through a selection of rude, puerile posts. What’s amazing is that it’s the same people argueing about the same things as when I looked here months ago!
Good Luck changing the culture here. Unless you just go ahead and start over, banning the posters who pollute this site on a daily basis.
Realist Larry - December 31, 2009
Your thoughts are valid.
Alas, methinks they would work for any website. Any lil ol website at all.
dtpollitt - December 31, 2009
how can Realist Larry
know who posts here a lot and always unless he is here a lot and always himself?
sorry, had to be a smart ass
Cubbie-Tim - December 31, 2009
I've been reading the posts all morning.....
and didn’t think any one was out of line at all……there were people going back and forth—for and against the signing—-but dont you think that that’s part of what sports sites are for? I do agree with you, name calling—bad…..and maybe a couple of posters do have somewhat of a mean streak, but personally, I would rather have my opinion bashed and have that person explain their reason for it, than just get ignored. It can be a learning process. In a perfect world, we would all be in complete agreement with each other, and we’d all be Cub fans, ( you too Viva el Birdos) but…..till then, you’re right, we should try to keep our minds open to other people’s opinions.
cooliogirl47 - December 31, 2009
I started by going back and reading BLou's fanpost first, to see what people were thinking before the signing.
400 comments and 7 Rec’s. Agonizing to read through!
Then I came here.
I will say, the comments in response to the main article by “Al” were pretty good.
Maybe I shouldn’t start w/ a post by ‘BLou’ Lou, lol?!
Anyways, just my 2 cents.
Cubbie-Tim, they were the same people w/ the same axes to grind as when I first tried coming here, last spring/summer I think.
Realist Larry - December 31, 2009
no doubt reading a BLou for your welcome to BCB
is like asking a Sooner for reasons why Texas would be a good place to relocate during the Red River Shoot Out weekend, not such a good idea.
Cubbie-Tim - December 31, 2009
Yeah, as a check I just went and read the new article by Shawn
and the comments were great.
So I take back my rant.
Just repost this article at the top of every BLou (and there are others probably?)
fanpost!
Realist Larry - December 31, 2009
LMAO
BLou’s posts need an acceptance link, stating that you know that you are punishing yourself and do not hold BCB accountable lol
sometimes tho posts like a BLou one do have the best pictures to look at from peple like SWL
Cubbie-Tim - December 31, 2009
Starting with one of those posts is a little like learning to swim with a weighted belt on
If you can do it, you are good to go anywhere, anytime. But the initial failure rate is pretty daunting.
ClarkFan - January 1, 2010
FWIW
I have seen other SB BLogs where it is not only worse, but even the mods talk like a drunken truck driver droping f-bomb after f-bomb.
Here some can be a bit fast to jump a post, and that holds true to almost any blog community. Does it make it right, IMHO no, but that doesnt mean that a person cannot learn from reading the posts that are “jumping” yours, and you have to hope that those jumping your post keeps an open mind as well. I willl point to this where it does prove that we dont have to agree but can have a good conversation about it
Cubbie-Tim - December 31, 2009
I was reading el Birdos posts regarding Holliday and I thought I was going to go blind!!
cooliogirl47 - December 31, 2009
Maybe I'm spoiled over at the Cowboys website
which is pretty decent.
I don’t really read much anywhere else, e.g. on the official sites or at ESPN or something, because the comments are so stupid.
It’s expectations, I guess. I think this “SBNation” could brand itself better and provide a place where moderators have more say and eliminate that stuff.
But I’m a Cubs fan, for better or worse! And agree with the people who say the signing is probably not that great!
Realist Larry - December 31, 2009
it was much different
before the merge with Yahoo. Then there are older posters who have been banned and continue to make new login id’s after being banend to the point that Al just throws his hands up and I cannot blame Al (BLou happens to be that person, and I am sure there are others). I guess with the amount of people who post at BCB there will be a mix which can be good or bad at times. I know i have butted heads with some posters here before, and luckily we were able to push thru it and move on. I hope you are able to continue to work thru similar situations and post here more often and give BCB a chance. Just avoid a game thread unless you are ready for the ultimate experience in WTFOMGBBQ
Cubbie-Tim - December 31, 2009
Ah, Game Threads!
Where else can one get all the highs and lows, the ebbs and flows of BCB, all in one neat package? They are the Alpha and the Omega of this site.
Of course, it helps to have a couple of stiff drinks before venturing into one. That, or a really good stash of funny pics.
Clutch16 - December 31, 2009
after having a couple holiday cheer...
I’m thinking….have you guys and girls ever done a game thread with an old game scheduled on MLB, with the Cubs, of coarse….is that how you spell “of coarse”?
cooliogirl47 - December 31, 2009
Have you not seen
This classic thread?
Clutch16 - December 31, 2009
That is a work of art....
I’m assuming there was no visual on that game, and going thru it briefly I can’t figure out how or who did the play-by-play. The ad-lib is stunning. That’s all I have to say, cuz it leaves me speech-less, except I highly doubt that it can ever be repeated.
cooliogirl47 - December 31, 2009
AFAIK
SWL planned and executed the entire PbP. The “color commentary” was (hilariously) provided by a few other posters.
Repeatable? Maybe. As much goofy fun? Probably not.
Clutch16 - December 31, 2009
a tip of the hat to SWL then...wish I was there.
cooliogirl47 - December 31, 2009
BABIP Kitty approves
eths - January 1, 2010
I am with you Cubbie Tim.
There other blogs that are just miserable and beyond foul. I think for the most part this is well run and enjoyable. You chose to be here and read.
Grockcubs - January 1, 2010
thanks for posting this Al
and a happy new year to all and to all a world championship in 2010!
doofus cubs guy - December 31, 2009
I think we should certainly be more inclusive
Let a kinder and gentler BCB begin at the New Year!
cubnational - December 31, 2009
Oh, dear.
Now I definitely need to start on the champagne.
Goodie1969 - December 31, 2009
me too!!
cooliogirl47 - December 31, 2009
on that note
time to go bang my head in the door for a few hours until i no longer hear “woo new woo year woo cubs woo 2010”
Cubbie-Tim - December 31, 2009
Kinder & gentler?
Sure. But the individual pictured can stay away.
Al Yellon - December 31, 2009
This usually helps
eths - January 1, 2010
He was at the last Bears home game.
Normal getup, despite the cold, and a bears construction helmet to top it off. Just as obnoxious as ever.
AndrewJStone - January 3, 2010
I'm tired being the straw that stirs the drink
Therefore I promise not to rile up the kool-aid drinkers unduly. I predict a trainwreck of a 2010 season and I won’t deviate from that philosophy until proven otherwise. If my thought process that the Cubs are a 75 win max ballclub riles, then I promise not to throw gasoline on the blaze. Truth be told I’m starting to smell a 95 loss season of same ugly proportions as to 2006. I don’t want to see that prediction come true, but honesty shall always prevail along with my objective brain and keen intellect. If that offends then I apologize on the front-end.
BLou - January 1, 2010
You're perfectly welcome to express your opinion here, even if negative.
Just don’t resort to personal attacks.
Al Yellon - January 1, 2010
If a negative opinion is justified, fine
but if it isn’t, then it deserves to be attacked.
Not Bruce Froemming - January 2, 2010
Not personally, but
you know what I mean.
Not Bruce Froemming - January 2, 2010
Attack a negative opinion?
Sure. But do it with facts, not personal stuff.
