Bleed Cubbie Blue

On The Cusp Of Spring Training

Spring training!

It seems not very long ago that we were all sitting, dreams crushed once again, watching the Cubs on yet another three-and-out in the NL playoffs.

Some of you said you were done, not coming back. But you knew you would.

And over the long winter we debated back and forth how each of us would change our team so that a fine regular season wouldn't turn into dust in only a few days in October. It seems odd, to me, that a 97-win team would have been changed so much, but the loss clearly galvanized Jim Hendry and Lou Piniella into action. Lou felt the club didn't have enough lefthanded hitters, so Hendry sent the productive but righthanded Mark DeRosa to Cleveland for three minor leaguers and lefthanded-hitting Mike Fontenot will play most of the time at second base. A number of us -- myself included -- think that the loss of DeRosa may be the one thing that Hendry will regret, given his versatility, production and good clubhouse presence.

Eight other players who were on the postseason roster: Bob Howry, Daryle Ward, Jim Edmonds, Henry Blanco, Ronny Cedeno, Felix Pie, Jason Marquis, and Kerry Wood, won't return in the blue pinstripes in 2009. That seems a large number of changes for a team that won back-to-back division titles, but Lou seems determined to put his personal stamp on this club, and win or go home with the guys he wants, rather than a large number of people he inherited. I will miss Wood, not for sentimental reasons, but because I think the Cubs' bullpen would have been better with Carlos Marmol setting Wood up, than with Kevin Gregg setting up Marmol (or vice versa).

I could be wrong -- if I am, I'll say so. We're about to find out.

The Cubs' other major change in 2009 will be in right field. Kosuke Fukudome, signed to great fanfare a year ago, flopped in the second half and so will now platoon in center field with Reed Johnson. I was on the sign-Adam-Dunn bandwagon, bad as he might have been in right field, that bat would have looked awfully good in the Cubs' lineup. Now, Dunn will bash homers at Nationals Park in Washington -- playing only seven games against the Cubs, who he owns, instead of 16 or 17, and the controversial "Gameboard", Milton Bradley, will play right field.

Bradley is a superlative hitter when he's healthy. Supposedly fully healed from the late-2007 knee injury, he needs to play 140 or so games to be worth the two-years-and-an-easily-makeable-option contract Hendry signed him to. I'll be ecstatic if he does so, because it will mean another year of likely having the Cubs lead the National League in runs scored, as they did even with a black hole in right field and a shortstop who couldn't smack an extra-base hit if you put it on a tee for him.

The starting rotation pitching staff returns intact, with Ryan Dempster the other big off-season (re)signing. The keys to the rotation are Carlos Zambrano and Rich Harden. Which Z do we get? The guy who threw the spectacular no-hitter in Milwaukee vs. the Astros? Or the guy who, in his next start, got battered by the Cardinals and stalked off the mound before Lou came to get the ball from him?

If it's the first one, we're in good shape.

Rich Harden has been fragile his entire career. He has made 30 or more starts in a year only once -- in 2004. Last year he made 25 starts, the most since, and if he'd been able to throw 14 more innings he probably would have led the major leagues in ERA and struck out more than any National Leaguer not named Lincecum. He'll have to be babied to get to 30 healthy starts in 2008. If he can do that, this rotation is formidable and doesn't even need the addition of a certain San Diego Padres righthander.

Most of the rest of the teams in the NL Central stood pat or, as in the case of the Brewers, who lost two key starting pitchers, regressed, so the Cubs should be favorites for a three-peat as NL Central champs. Many of the statistical prediction models show the Cubs winning as many as 95 games. That's surely possible, but youneverknow (Joaquin Andujar's favorite word) what might happen during the year with injuries, or a team coming out of nowhere (raise your hand if you picked Tampa Bay to be the 2008 AL champion a year ago -- no hands that I can see).

It's been a long, cold, snowy winter in Chicago and most of the Midwest, the worst winter in 25 years, not to mention having news reports each day seemingly trying to one-up themselves with each bizarre revelation about a present or former major leaguer. That makes the pictures we're going to see in the next couple of days -- ballplayers in uniform working out, warming up, throwing baseballs -- that much sweeter.

Play ball.

First

The Cubs won the division last year? And the year before? And then went three and out twice? I forgot all that, I guess. The power of the mind to repress…

A song for today

Here comes the Sun (an adaptation)

For us Cub fans it’s been a long long lonely winter
For Cub fans it’s been ages since you’ve been gone

What’s that old saying

Words to banish winter sorrow
Pitchers and catchers report tomorrow

Ahmen

on Let’s Play Ball. It’s about time. With another winter snow storm heading into Iowa tomorrow I’ll have comfort knowing baseball is back.

Does Theriot have necessarily need extra base hits?

I like his role of “table-setter” and my issue was the double play black hole that batted in the 3-hole last year. I’m a big DLee fan and hope he’s tweaked his swing or approach when runners are on base. The Cubs batting lineup is a funky one because of the leadoff spot being held by a guy who can potentially hit 40 hrs. Theriot, in my mind, acts as a good secondary lead-off guy for the meat in the order. Yes, the stolen base attempts can be a little erratic but maybe he was given the green light given Lee’s propensity to ground into double plays?

That's only true if he hits...

… for the average and OBP he did last year. If his average drops to 2007 levels, he can actually hurt the offense.

oh, I agree

just saying I didn’t mind his approach to his role in the offense last year.

An occasional 2 bagger

eliminates the double play potential and takes pressure off Lee.

Part of Lee’s double play issue was the frequency of slappy single on first. It was an issue, but if Lee just grounded into a single out, there wouldn’t have been the focus on it.

More hit-and-run

That was one of my biggest complaints last year, was that given Lee’s propensity to hit into double plays, Lou never mixed it up by calling for a hit and run.

With this year’s team, and its surplus of scrappiness, I hope it’s more intelligently aggressive on the bases.

Right on.

I’d love to see XBHs out of Theriot as much as anyone, but he received a lot of undue flack for “merely getting on base” when Lee was doubling up right behind him. With that said, why he wasn’t stealing every other on base is beyond me. Here’s hoping Lee finds his stroke and pulls a ton down the first base line sending The Riot to third.

Theriot stealing

He wasn’t doing a particularly good job, his success rate was not that great, and I believe that you have to have a pretty high success rate to make it worth stealing. Maybe one of you sabermagicians can refresh my memory on that last point.

There should have been more hit and runs though.

Pujols led the NL in double plays in 2007.

I don’t think that qualifies as a “black hole”.

how about "rally killer"

Pujols also batted .327 in 2007 with 42 home runs so his productivity over-shadowed his DP liability no doubt.

Thanks Al

I’m still a bit numb from last year, but this is getting me in the mood for more MLB. Once the regular season starts… I’ll be ready to give me heart again to this ballclub.

Let’s hope this is a special year…

Damn

this offseason went by very fast. Hard to believe its one more day until Spring Training..

We can thank Jake Peavy and Kevin Towers for that

I know that if I hadn’t had a rumor to talk about on a daily basis, I would have noticed the winter more.

I'm thanking the "Name That Cub" feature

That took my mind off of the current and future Cubs. I got to read a lot about obscure Cubs.

Now, I’m ready for some baseball.

Loved "Name That Cub"

I got to match some faces with names that I’ve seen on baseball-reference.com. I loved seeing the players before 1979 (the beginning of superstation WGN) on there. If you lived out of range of a Chicago Cubs TV network station before 1979, you didn’t get a chance to see the Cubs on TV too often. I don’t have too many baseball cards that go back as far as the 1970’s, so I had no idea what a lot of those older players looked like.

Glad you guys liked that feature.

I’m going to post another one later this afternoon.

Al, your post made me long to hear Wayne Messmer sing the national anthem.

For those want want to hear it: Here you go.

PLAY BALL!!!

When is the TV schedule going to be released??
Probably pretty soon.

As soon as I get it, I’ll post it.

eh, thanks!

Can’t wait for the first WGN game..

It's going to be a stressed and odd season

This much we know. On paper the Cubs are clearly the best team in a weak (and getting weaker by the minute) NL Central. So I think most Cub fans will logically conclude that this team will once again make the playoffs. But given the horrific post-season failings of 2007 and 2008 I think most Cub fans will be anxious and irritable through 162 games because they will be focused and stressed thinking about the 2009 post-season.

Of course it is very dangerous mindset to think your team is a lock to make the playoffs before the first pitch of the season is even thrown. Which could lead to the mother of all explosive situations at Wrigley this summer should the Cubs be devastated by injuries or otherwise lay an egg.

It will be interesting, I agree

The Cubs should be solid favorites in the division, and in the National League, barring injury. I could see the powderkeg potential should injuries occur.

But I think for the most part, as long as the team is playing well, the amount of ledge-jumping that happens will be a little smaller than in years past, mainly because there won’t be as much heat from other teams in the division.

A lot of Cub fans will have a "hurry up and get to the postseason" mentality for the regular season

Myself included.

Come August, I may feel the same way
Regardless of how things look on paper,

TLR and the Cards will be competitive and one of the other teams will find a way to stay close. With focus and good health, the Cubs should win, but I agree they can’t mess around.

i advise patience

I’ll just take a wait and see approach here.

I agree with you. This may be a very

strange season at Wrigley. Even though a lot of what we hear about is building the team for October, that is not the slam dunk most think.

with Catchers and Pitchers reporting tomorrow

does that mean starting Saturday it is ok to say “Wait Til Next Year” ?

NO

Starting saturday you say “Next year is here”

Cautiosly optimistic..

with a large dose of last year’s reality still tempering the optimism.

I’ve been a Cub fan since 1966 and despite all the previous disappointments, I got carried away last year and convinced myself to let the lessons from the past be forgotten. I told my son dozens of times last year " Remember this, enjoy every day, it is going to happen". We alll know what happened and after getting over the soul numbing shock of it, I find myself wanting it even more now. It is going to be surreal, memorable and extremely special when it finally happens because of everything that we have gone through.

On to this year !!

Oh yeah...

get a right handed bat with pop that can play multiple infield spots for the bench (Nomar ?) and save the money for a midseason acquistion if needed.

You forgot 1969, 1977..

Joking !!

Believe me, I am over it. I understand exactly what you’re saying. The disappointments of the past don’t take away from the joy of being at a game with my son (he’s 28), going to NYC to see them play at Yankee Stadium, PNC, Great American, Busch old & new and Miller. We’ve bonded and shared experiences that will never be forgotten and it’s our shared love of the Cubs and baseball that have made them so memomarable. The disappointments of the past take nothing away from that, they will only make the realization of a dream sweeter when it happens.

But, having had a little taste of what could be makes me want the whole thing. If we let the winning a championship be the sole reward, then I would imagine that most if not all of us would have abandoned the chase long ago. We would not be filling the stadium, blogging on this and other sites, traveling to other cities to se our boys play, adorning our walls, homes and bodies with memorabilia, spending our money and devoting large chunks of our life if a championship was the sole goal.

Well said

Well said indeed. You’re right, a championship isn’t the only reward, just the highest reward. And I want it, and I want it now….but I don’t always get what I want. I’m on the other side with you, with three boys 8 and under and they are sharing the rides with me now. I’m not sure who I want it for more…me, my kids, my father or my deceased grandfather. How about all of us?

Either way, it’s time to start anew. It’s time for Al to pull out the musings of Giamatti and others. And no matter how many times they may have failed me, it’s again time for the Cubs to pay us all back….however they choose to do so.

Last October

we all got high, came down, and vowed it was the last time.

Now our dealer’s come back around. I’ll take two, please.

Go Cubs Go

Didn't know Michael Phelps was a Cub fan.
This batch

better not be bunk like the last two.

You mean the last five.

In all five of the Cubs’ playoff appearances in the divisional play era, they have gone out by losing three straight.

Five different teams have done this: the Padres, Giants, Braves, Marlins and Dodgers.

That's hard to read.

Hell, even a single playoff victory would feel nice.

Not true

Won the NLDS in 2003

"Gone out".

Meaning, were eliminated from the postseason in that manner.

Well,

It’s going to be hard to think that anything less than a World Series would be considered a good year this time. We’ve improve each of the last 2 years, now we must take that final step in October. Bring on Spring Training!

let’s get this thing started!

So I don't have to

go back and dig through posts from last season does anyone have the picture of the Cardinal fan with the “morans” sign handy that they could post for me? I need to send it to a guy who I thought was only a Sox fan but is also a Cardinal fan. Thanks so much for your help.

You mean my personal hero?

This guy?!

This guy is all sorts of win.

That picture

never gets old, I still laugh my ass off.

I've been keeping a folder of pics like these for the 09 season

Sometimes a picture is worth a 1000 words, and I’m generally too lazy to type them.

Yep that's the one.

Can’t wait to send it to him. Thanks so much!!!!!

you'll have to print it out first though and send it snail-mail, right?

after all, he is a Sox AND Cardinal fan… ;-)

Nah, he got

it in an email this afternoon. :D

Al, thanks for the encouraging post...

It is hard to believe that the greatest game is back for another season already! GO CUBS!

It's totally and ridiculously wrong to say...

that Bradley is only worth the $ if he plays 140 games.

Just hope WE all can relax

and enjoy the season. Sure there is a ton of variables throughout the season that constantly bring change, but lets sit back and have a good ride.
And one other thing; stay healthly Cubs

Pitchers and catchers

My husband said he knew I was the girl he’d marry for 2 events that happened very close together a few months after we started dating.

We were out and someone asked me if I had the time and I looked at my watch and answered yes without telling the time and then said “Did you want to know the time?” because I was being silly. The other person laughed.

Then I said a few days later “Valentines Shmalentines. Pitchers and catchers report tomorrow!”

Yup... you're a keeper...

Do you have a sister…? lol

Did you ever attend band camp?
Toy Story 2 was an okay movie
i am both

intrigued & excited by what is going on with the back end of the cubs’ starting rotation. will heilman prove himself worthy of a spot? will the shark join him/ or win the spot over him? i would like to see both heilman & samardzija earn spots on the cubs’ starting rotation.

I'm curious to see who wins out the competition between

samardzija, Heilman & Marshall, but pretty sure I don’t want two to win. I’m pretty comfortable with the first 4.
