BCB reader Al Spangler sent me this photo... yes, there is a Cub pictured in it. Name both of these people and win a $10 gift card from Distant Replays.
Lee Meyers was a Cub minor leaguer when he married Mamie Van Doren, a sort-of actress and sex symbol, on May 4, 1966, after she broke up with Angels pitcher Bo Belinsky.
They were divorced on January 3, 1969. Here is Meyers’ playing record. He never really came close to making the major leagues.
He supposedly had inherited $2 million from his grandfather, the publisher of McCall’s magazine, but his father denied that. On April 27, 1972, Lee Meyers died in a car accident in Huntington Beach, California.
… her Wikipedia page, she was born Joan Lucille Olander and named “Mamie” after President Eisenhower’s wife.
Among men she was purported to be involved with were Clark Gable, Howard Hughes, Johnny Carson, Elvis Presley, Burt Reynolds, Jack Dempsey, Steve McQueen, Johnny Rivers, Robert Evans, Eddie Fisher, Warren Beatty, Tony Curtis, Steve Cochran, and Joe Namath.
Supposedly the pic is from 2007 she would have been like 76 years old? Does not look my grandma or anyone else I know. Suspect she has alot of bondo on…
But it does have it’s uses……we could use it to “interrogate” all the insurgents we capture over here, just keep showing them that pic till they talk. I imagine it wouldn’t take long!
MILFY — really? Maybe in the pic Al posted…but geez she looks like a dolled up grandma in the other pics. Dolled-up Grandma ≠ MILF. Well wait…maybe this is a generational thing.
… the comments in this post at the Angels blog 6-4-2 mentioned that Lee Meyers was his uncle (the poster was born after Lee died). Don’t know how that would help you find that photo, but it’s interesting.
SEX KITTENS GO TO COLLEGE from the great Alfred Zugsmith. The scary thing is I don’t have to look that or the
Steve Cochran info up, I know it. Some people are good at baseball stats but I am better at worthless movie trivia.
hmmmm....welll....

DINGDINGDING!!!
Winner.
Lee Meyers was a Cub minor leaguer when he married Mamie Van Doren, a sort-of actress and sex symbol, on May 4, 1966, after she broke up with Angels pitcher Bo Belinsky.

Mamie Van Doren turns 78 years old today.
Al Yellon - February 6, 2009
Meyers was 19 when he married the 33-year-old Van Doren
She was married 5 times. Meyers being husband #3.
She also dated Howard Hughes, who supposedly discovered her and cast her in some of his movies for RKO.
flachimesa - February 6, 2009
WOW
She was a hottie back in her day
At one point was still very MILFY

According to...
Al Yellon - February 6, 2009
Steve Cochran?
Shanghai Badger - February 6, 2009
That list is from the Wikipedia entry.
I don’t think it’s the Steve Cochran you’re thinking of.
Al Yellon - February 6, 2009
I didn't really think it was
I should have posted a pic just to be silly.
Shanghai Badger - February 6, 2009
American actor from 50s & 60s
Best film IL GRIDO by Antonioni. Also in WHITE HEAT.
Doggie Stalker - February 6, 2009
Thanks.
I had never heard of him before.
Al Yellon - February 6, 2009
I almost had a "beverage thru the nose" moment
when I read the above quickly and thought it read Joan Rivers instead of Johnny Rivers.
That was close. Still it was a modest gag (as in choke). Thanks, Al.
LAcarl519 - February 6, 2009
now that I looked at her Wikipedia page, I think
Joan Rivers might be attracted to Mamie in her current state (that picture of her marketing the whine, err…wine) is a bit rough.
LAcarl519 - February 6, 2009
This is weird
Supposedly the pic is from 2007 she would have been like 76 years old? Does not look my grandma or anyone else I know. Suspect she has alot of bondo on…
StevenABQ - February 6, 2009
Oh, that's just wrong.
Al Yellon - February 6, 2009

Now THAT"S scary...
But it does have it’s uses……we could use it to “interrogate” all the insurgents we capture over here, just keep showing them that pic till they talk. I imagine it wouldn’t take long!
nmcubsfan - February 7, 2009
Hmmm
MILFY — really? Maybe in the pic Al posted…but geez she looks like a dolled up grandma in the other pics. Dolled-up Grandma ≠ MILF. Well wait…maybe this is a generational thing.
Ok nevermind.

Clutche - February 6, 2009
True.
But he is wearing a Cubs cap in the photo.
Al Yellon - February 6, 2009
lame excuse :)
Clutche - February 6, 2009
But in defense....
he is only referred to as a Cub — not a Chicago Cub. ;)

I thought it was Barbara Eden and Ken Holtzman
JohnM - February 6, 2009
Now my goal is to find the picture of Meyers that she is holding
Meyers and Van Doren in Sacremento 1966

Someone in...
… the comments in this post at the Angels blog 6-4-2 mentioned that Lee Meyers was his uncle (the poster was born after Lee died). Don’t know how that would help you find that photo, but it’s interesting.

She probably burned it
Clutche - February 6, 2009
Hmm. BCB goes "Soft Porn"?
Or is “soft porn” an oxymoron?
Zeke - February 6, 2009
The only thing that's soft here is Mamie.

That happened months ago

I think I saw her in one of those midnight movies you see on TV
when you can’t sleep.
After I saw her, in my imagination she stayed with me that night, and I fell asleep like a baby :-)
zevkalman - February 6, 2009
Today is Mamie Van Doren's 78th Birthday
I saw just the notice in my paper. Did you know that when you posted the pic, Al?
Mike Vails Evil Twin - February 6, 2009
he already mentioned that
Cubs and Hawks fan - February 6, 2009
Just wondering
Where did he mention it? I did a word search for “birthday” in the Comments and didn’t find it.
Mike Vails Evil Twin - February 6, 2009
in the same column where he said DING DING DING
Cubs and Hawks fan - February 6, 2009
D'oh!
I just skimmed over the paragraph and missed it.

She might have been a hottie at one time...
Oh, this your wife, huh? A lovely lady. Hey baby, you must’ve been something before electricity.
Endrick - February 7, 2009
Mamie Loved Baseball
Meyer wasn’t the only ballplayer Mamie turned the double play with. She was also engaged for a time to Bo Belinsky.

Don't Kill Me
I missed the earlier reference.

Welcome to the party....everyone's left
Van Doren supposedly dated Sandy Koufax and Tony Conigliaro, too.
