The Cubs will spend St. Patrick's Day at the newest spring training colossus complex playing the Dodgers. Randy Wolf will be LA's starter (will Joe Torre bat him second again?) against Carlos Zambrano.
One Dodger we will not see today is Manny Ramirez -- he's out for at least the rest of the week with a sore hammy. Which has to be making Torre, Ned Colletti and Dodger fans say, "Uh-oh", about their $25 million investment.
Other Cub notes:
No audio or video for today's game, but here's today's MLB.com Mediacenter anyway.
MLB.com Gameday for the Cubs/Dodgers game
There are two WBC games today: the USA/Puerto Rico game will be good news for the Cubs, because the loser is eliminated; that means either Ted Lilly or Geovany Soto will be coming back to camp. Lilly starts tonight for the USA at 6 pm CDT (MLB Network). MLB.com Gameday for Puerto Rico/USA. Also tonight, Japan plays Korea (10 pm CDT, MLB Network). The winner qualifies for the semifinals, the loser plays Cuba tomorrow. MLB.com Gameday for Japan/Korea.
Discuss amongst yourselves.

Ever since a couple years ago
when Z said if he could pitch for another team it would be the sox, i knew that he was deep down a sox fan.
Jim thome is a cubs fan!

He and Ozzie
I think they are either related or there’s some kind of connection between them. Someone told me Carlos’s older brother is close friends with Ozzie or something like that.
I did hear Ozzie is the one who tipped off the scouts to Z.
puckishcubsfan - March 17, 2009
Yeah, Z has said that before...
…and it’s fairly well known that he and Ozzie are friends. It’s not a big deal to me.

Me neither.

so...
… Mark DeRosa is traded for 3 guys who will not have an impact on this club, at least to start the season. Again, I understand the financial implications. I do not believe that Hendry could not have gotten some piece, however, that would have helped this club.
dmlichte - March 17, 2009
The 12 (sometimes 11) pitchers that start the season
are not the only pitching a team needs to get through a 162 game season. Teams use around 20 pitchers throughout a season so it’s very possible any of the pitchers being sent to the minor leagues to start the season will end up in the majors at some point.
Here’s an example: Carlos Marmol was sent to the minors in 2007 to start and ended up spending most of the season with the Cubs pitching out of the bullpen.
cowsarecool220 - March 17, 2009
ya...
… I get that. but Stevens ain’t Carlos Marmol. Sorry, but this was a BAD trade.
dmlichte - March 17, 2009
It made very little sense.
The DeRosa and Pie deals were just unnecessary and counterproductive.
D98 - March 17, 2009
the DeRosa deal was a money swap for Bradley's contract...
so we won’t know how counterproductive it is until after we see what Bradley does this year.
santoswoodenlegs - March 17, 2009
So was the Wood deal, though.
The Cubs shed a lot of payroll in those 2 moves.
I realize that it was necessary to cut payroll and get Bradley, due in large part to the $36M the Cubs still owe to the utterly useless Kosuke Fukudome for the next three years.
That being said, DeRosa had value – especially with only 1 year left on his deal at a reasonable rate. Do you honestly believe that there was no team in MLB willing to deal a legitimate prospect for him?
In judging the DeRosa trade, yes, we need to consider what Bradley does this year — but we also need to consider what DeRosa does this year vs. both Bradley and Fontenot, and what the 3 Tribe arms we got for DeRosa do in the coming years. (In all likelihood, not a whole heck of a lot.)
In theory, I agree that it was a good time to sell high on DeRosa. In practice, it doesn’t seem to have been worth the trouble.
D98 - March 17, 2009
And I think you make a key point
“It was a good time to sell high on DeRosa.”
But Hendry didn’t act like he was selling high. The prospects — and I use the term loosely — that he got back were more like those you would get when you trade a player a year late, not a year early. (See: Sammy Sosa)
cocknfire - March 17, 2009
That's exactly what I'm saying.
“Selling high” presumes that you’re getting something worthwhile for your asset.
The Cubs did not get anything worthwhile for DeRosa. Which was surprising, and makes me question whether it was worth the trouble to sell “high” in the first place.
D98 - March 17, 2009
Dont forget this...never forget this...
Mike Fontenot was pretty much a ‘throw-in’ to the deal that sent Sosa to Baltimore.
If the Orioles really believed in LBR, why would they part with him for Sammy?
northernsails - March 17, 2009
sorry if the meaning there was unclear...
I was debating the “uselessness” of anything Jim Hendry does. He does a lot of things right for this ballclub. Give him a chance.
northernsails - March 17, 2009
not true at all
It may have been a money swap but that doesn’t mean that Hendry was not allowed to get something decent in return for DeRosa. The money stuff aside Hendry got crap for DeRosa while the Phillies and Twins remained interested.
dmlichte - March 17, 2009
lets wait and see
I am sure the Marlins fans said the same with a young Dontrell Willis, and Oriole fans were asking why we wanted LBR in the trade
Cubbie-Tim - March 17, 2009
Are you guys kidding?
I know it’s St. Patty’s day, but there is no way you can be THAT drunk already. Take an Economics class and then write me a paper on why the team couldn’t keep Pie and DeRosa. 500 words minimum.
14theofleury - March 17, 2009
OK, explain why Pie and his minimum deal needed to go.
(clock is running)
How, exactly, does a team save cash while dealing a player earning the league minimum?
Especially when he’s replaced with an older, less effective player who is making more money?
Seriously, though, I’m sure you can explain how the Pie deal saved a single dime for the Cubs. With your Economics Class background, I’m sure it will be simple for you.
D98 - March 17, 2009
The painful fact is...
the Pie trade wasn’t about saving $. Lou had reached the end of his patience with him…whether you agree he gave Pie a fair shot or not…and it was time to move on for both of them.
santoswoodenlegs - March 17, 2009
that's the way it worked out.
I just get a bit testy when some poster tells me that I need to go to Economics class because it’s so obvious that trading Felix Pie saved the team money.
It was a stupid trade. And if Lou caused it, shame on him. Hendry should be able to stand up to his field manager w/r/t roster composition, regardless.
The Pie trade made the Cubs a worse team in 2008, and potentially substantially worse during the remainder of Pie’s cost-controlled years. Hendry should not have done it.

Rotoworld posts that Rocky Cherry Released
by the Mets. They got him via Rule 5.
Orioles declined getting him back, making him a free agent.
Not saying I want him back, just passing along the info.
ScottT - March 17, 2009
I didn't realize how old Cherry is.
He’s 29. I suspect his time is done.
Too bad the Orioles declined; it would have made Cherry and Pie teammates again.
Al Yellon - March 17, 2009
Can't the Mets send him to the minors if the Orioles declined to take him back?
Or do the Mets not want him at all? That seems strange though. You’d think they’d want to send him to the minors as a just in case player.
cowsarecool220 - March 17, 2009
Yeah, Rotoworld speculates
that the Mets will sign him to a minor league deal.
ScottT - March 17, 2009
You know, I think the reason he is a free agent
is that he has already been out righted by the Orioles (which is why he was available for the rule 5 draft as he was no longer on the 40 man roster).
If I recall correctly, after a player is out righted the second time, he becomes a free agent.

cocknfire - March 17, 2009

halfblindcubbiegirl - March 17, 2009
Well, at least D-Lee can still hit in BP.
Of course, that isn’t the problem here. The problem is that he can’t make good contact when people are trying to get him out.
He can’t recognize breaking stuff anymore, or at least not until it’s too late. So he’s trying to pull outside sliders, and watching meatball fastballs.
He’s such a good guy…. but it’s a shame that Hendry wasn’t able to move him this offseason. It’s also a shame that his injuries and/or age-related decline have made him into a below-average 1B at such a young age, and honestly, it’s a shame that he had a career year in his 2005 contract season, which was wasted on a mediocre-to-bad Cubs team.
If Lee hadn’t been so great in 2005, the Cubs wouldn’t be spending 8 figures on the least valuable 1B in the division.
It still amazes me that the Cubs are spending $40M on Lee, Fukudome, and Soriano. How can that even be possible?! We actually cringe when we see those players coming up in big spots.
For that kind of money, we could have Mark Teixeira and Manny Ramirez.
D98 - March 17, 2009
Joey Votto and Adam LaRoche are more valuable than Derrek Lee?
santoswoodenlegs - March 17, 2009
Votto, absolutely.
LaRoche, in 2008, yes. Going forward, I don’t know.
Votto was more valuable than Lee in 2008, and their relative values on a going forward basis are not even in the same ballpark. If the Cubs offered D-Lee for Votto, they would be laughed out of the room.
D98 - March 17, 2009

I hope you mean just his bat.

14theofleury - March 17, 2009
Average with the glove,
well below average with the bat.
For a starting 1B, that is. In the full universe of first basemen, including backups, he’s probably somewhat above average.
On a cost-for-production basis, he’s probably dead last.
D98 - March 17, 2009
2007 Gold Glove winner == Average with the glove
Gotcha. There’s no beer here, I’m going where there is some. Have fun.
Clutch16 - March 17, 2009
Come on, that's not an argument.
We can all stipulate that gold gloves are given out for random reasons that have very little to do with defensive performance.
I mean, Bobby Abreu won one in 2005, and he was Manny-level bad. Rafael Palmiero won one in a year in which he never actually played defense. Jeter won one.
That being said, Lee used to be way above average with the glove. In 2008, he was not.
D98 - March 17, 2009
His starting shortstop last year was Ryan Theriot....
and he only had 9 errors. End of story.
santoswoodenlegs - March 17, 2009
I'll agree Theriot is bad
But if it was a bad throw, the error’s likely on Theriot, not Lee.
Bildo1805 - March 17, 2009
The argument is that Lee prevents Theriot errors.
I don’t buy it, but I can understand the logic.
Lee is still a good fielder. He’s no Mark Teixiera with the glove, but he’s good.
I just don’t think that 1B defense is worth taking the hit on offense. 1B defense is more like a “perk” than a prerequisite when we’re discussing $10M+ first basemen.
D98 - March 17, 2009
OH
THERIOT only had 9 errors. I see now.
Bildo1805 - March 17, 2009
no...Theriot only had 14....
now imagine how many he’d have if Lance Berkman was our 1B.
santoswoodenlegs - March 17, 2009
That's a career high for Theriot, though.
Granted, he’d never played 140 games at SS before, but the jump to 14 errors last year may be further evidence of what we all saw with our eyes last year – Lee wasn’t the great defensive player that he’d been in the past.
You couldn’t count on Lee stopping those rocket line-drives he’d always stopped in prior years.
As for Lee’s 9 errors last year – isn’t that quite a few for a 1B?
I mean, Jason Giambi had 9 errors too, and he hadn’t played 1B in years, because he was moved to DH, because he was such an awful 1B.
D98 - March 17, 2009
Jason Giambi 9 errors in 113 games – shortstop Jeter
Derrek Lee 9 errors in 153 games – shortstop DoubleClutchy McLimpArm
Yeah…Giambi’s about the same defensively.
santoswoodenlegs - March 17, 2009
Don't the SABR types call Jeter the worst glove in MLB?
Regardless of position?
D98 - March 17, 2009
Glove and Arm are 2 different things.
santoswoodenlegs - March 17, 2009
I think anybody could have looked at Lee last year
and tell he wasn’t the same guy.
I don’t remember the specific plays, but I remember seeing a couple of plays where I thought: “That’s not like Lee at all.”
cocknfire - March 17, 2009
That's all I'm saying.
He was still fine at 1B. But he wasn’t as good as he’d been in the past, and you could tell.
At the plate, well…. when you’re a beat slower with the bat, it’s a lot more obvious. No power whatsoever, and a whole lot of getting fooled by breaking pitches.
For what it’s worth, 2010 is the last year on Lee’s contract. One way or another, this situation will be resolved by the end of next year.
D98 - March 17, 2009
Berkman?
He only had 5 errors last year.
And his shortstop only had 11.
And it was Miguel Tejada!
D98 - March 17, 2009
What position (besides Catcher) is worth taking the hit on offense?
santoswoodenlegs - March 17, 2009
Closer
cocknfire - March 17, 2009
Shortstop, and potentially second and centerfield.
First base is like left field – it’s a place where you can put a high-offense player, because the impact of their defensive performance is usually pretty muted. It’s a low-leverage defense position.
Catcher, obviously, is just huge on defense. As long as the player isn’t a Bako-level hitter, defense is key. A Michael Barrett can cost far more games with his glove than he can possibly win with his bat.
D98 - March 17, 2009
See, that's the kind of thinking
that got us Cesar Izturis
cocknfire - March 17, 2009
I think that "he's a Gold Glover!" is what got us Izturis.
Izturis had the rare distinction of being an absolutely miserable offensive player while also being a terrible defensive player.
What I’m saying is, the value of defense at SS is more important than the value of defense at 1B.
Obviously, you’d prefer to have big hitters at every position. But the difference between playing the best defensive 1B in the league, and the worst defensive 1B in the league, just isn’t going to have the same kind of impact.
D98 - March 17, 2009
I was kind of joking
Probably should have said so …
No, I don’t think you need a masher at SS, but I think it’s possible to balance offense and defense. Yes, I’d prefer a defensive SS, but I’m also not sure I want 2008-vintage Omar Vizquel
cocknfire - March 17, 2009

14theofleury - March 17, 2009
How many innings is Z expected to go?
Anyone know?
halfblindcubbiegirl - March 17, 2009
i think 4-5
Probably at least until he bats again due to the homer
heine41 - March 17, 2009
i just love the blurps of play by play sprinkled in with the conversation
these guys should have a 1am Sunday morning talk show on NPR
heine41 - March 17, 2009
Where are you getting the audio?
Tim M - March 17, 2009
See above.
The Dodgers Web site is offering a free video stream.
daver - March 17, 2009
ST or not
2 out walks really piss me off
halfblindcubbiegirl - March 17, 2009
I bet not as much as the one-out bunt pisses me off ;)
I mean, if we’re talking baseball pet peeves here …
cocknfire - March 17, 2009
I always wondered how golf announcers would sound if they did baseball games...
I wonder no more.
ballhawk - March 17, 2009
Totally.
I’m waiting for someone to make a putt.
daver - March 17, 2009
then we all would politely do the golf clap...
ballhawk - March 17, 2009
that bad, huh?
halfblindcubbiegirl - March 17, 2009
It's LA announcers...
they won’t really start talking about the game until the 3rd inning, and they’ll probably stop again after the 7th.
santoswoodenlegs - March 17, 2009
Is that my computer monitor
Or did the Dodgers do the green cap thing?
cocknfire - March 17, 2009
doing the green cap thing
ballhawk - March 17, 2009
do what?
help a blind girl out, yo.
halfblindcubbiegirl - March 17, 2009
They're wearing green caps
The whole St. Patrick’s Day idea.
cocknfire - March 17, 2009
good lord
it feels like st pattys has been going on since the parade on saturday. the next person who says something to me about not wearing green SO gets kicked in the shins.
halfblindcubbiegirl - March 17, 2009
I didn't even think about it
cocknfire - March 17, 2009
Dodgers are wearing green caps. Haven't seen if the Cubs are yet or not.
Most teams do this on St. Patricks Day. Sometimes caps/uniforms are auctioned off for charity.
ballhawk - March 17, 2009
they are
And the green really look great with the blue uni’s….
heine41 - March 17, 2009
Big Z is wearing one.
daver - March 17, 2009
is Fontenot wearing little green knickers
and gold buckles on his shoes?
ballhawk - March 17, 2009
And toting a box of Lucky Charms
cocknfire - March 17, 2009
"they always after me lucky arm"
ballhawk - March 17, 2009
Nah. People would keep wrestling him to the ground...
…and demanding he show them the way to a pot o’ gold.
daver - March 17, 2009
Ugh
My Internet made the video all choppy, so I couldn’t watch it long
At least I don’t have to watch the green caps.
cocknfire - March 17, 2009
I had the same problem.
I’m just listening to the audio now.
daver - March 17, 2009
As are
da Cubs.
DamonBerryhillsMitt - March 17, 2009
Z!!! A Monster
heine41 - March 17, 2009
Rbi Double
heine41 - March 17, 2009
Big Z doubles in a run!!!
Who needs The Game?!
daver - March 17, 2009
random
but your sig makes me giggle every time.
halfblindcubbiegirl - March 17, 2009
It's a great line, isn't it?
I wonder how long Fontenot is going to put up with everyone calling him “little,” though. It must get annoying.
daver - March 17, 2009
You would think Lou might remember his name by now
cocknfire - March 17, 2009
Pleading his case to be moved up in the order?
flachimesa - March 17, 2009
Mark DeRosa looks different
14theofleury - March 17, 2009
If he looks like he's in this game, he does look difference
Because he’s in Miami right now.
cocknfire - March 17, 2009
Sac fly makes it 6-1 Cubs.
daver - March 17, 2009
RBI Single
for Miles. 7-1
DamonBerryhillsMitt - March 17, 2009
RBI single for Miles, 7-1 Cubs
daver - March 17, 2009
So far Lou's comments about the power hitters needing to begin hitting are working....
for our ace pitcher.
santoswoodenlegs - March 17, 2009
Hey...I like this funky country music.
daver - March 17, 2009
My wife's socks are more funky than that music
And she washes her socks.
14theofleury - March 17, 2009
It wasn't exactly P-Funk, was it?
daver - March 17, 2009
Not exactly George Clinton. More like Bill Clinton.
willie mays hayes' gloves - March 17, 2009
Gameday has gone off to Zombie land
Orlando Hudson is apparently recording the longest fly out in league history. Or the world slowest grounds crew or something.
halfblindcubbiegirl - March 17, 2009
I guess they got the message
that the Dodgers were b’castin’ for free.
14theofleury - March 17, 2009
yes but did she???
heine41 - March 17, 2009
You guys don't mind if I pick my gee-tar, do ya?
daver - March 17, 2009
I'm playin' mine right now.
14theofleury - March 17, 2009
::picks up his spoons::
heine41 - March 17, 2009
Koskie at the plate.
daver - March 17, 2009
BB
DamonBerryhillsMitt - March 17, 2009
Draws the walk.
daver - March 17, 2009
Gone!!
For Koyie Hill!! He’s now 3-3 on the day. Very nice!
DamonBerryhillsMitt - March 17, 2009
Boom goes the dynamite
Koyie Hill trying to make Bako irrelevant
Tim M - March 17, 2009
I hope so.
sue369 - March 17, 2009
Koyie Hill Goes Yard
3-3
heine41 - March 17, 2009
Sweet.
Way to go, Koyie.
daver - March 17, 2009
Go Koyie!
sloathcheck78 - March 17, 2009
Uh oh...somebody busted out their slide guitar.
daver - March 17, 2009
Koyie Hill should be the backup catcher, period.
he’s proven his worth, what a great story
Chanman25 - March 17, 2009
Caution! Caution! Streaky hitter alert!
cocknfire - March 17, 2009
As opposed to
the sure and steady bat of Paul Bako.
DamonBerryhillsMitt - March 17, 2009
Didn't say that
I just remember Hill being an exciting player a couple of years ago … and then, he started hitting in the low .200s
cocknfire - March 17, 2009
Ty Wright? Tighe Rite? Tie Right?
ballhawk - March 17, 2009
Yes.
DamonBerryhillsMitt - March 17, 2009
Hu?
Chanman25 - March 17, 2009
oh no here comes the championship drought talk
heine41 - March 17, 2009
At least they waited until the 6th
ESPN starts before the first pitch.
Qixotl - March 17, 2009
This is the most animated they've sounded all day.
daver - March 17, 2009
Wry
Tight doubles off the wall.
DamonBerryhillsMitt - March 17, 2009
Cubs retiring 31?
Friend just called me and said that ESPN 1000 reported that the cubs were gonna retire 31 for Maddux and Jenkins. Nothing yet online but anyone hear this?
dmlichte - March 17, 2009
on the Sun Times website
http://blogs.suntimes.com/fullcourtpress/2009/03/cubs_to_retire_no_31_in_honor.html
will happen May 3rd before the Marlins game.
dmlichte - March 17, 2009
That'll be cool.
daver - March 17, 2009
pain in the neck
If Maddux comes , I have to come and I was not planning on coming that weekend but at least I did not sell my tickets yet.
Doggie Stalker - March 17, 2009
I would assume...
… that this was scheduled so Maddux and Jenkins could come in. If they aren’t there it would be the worst retirement ceremony ever.
dmlichte - March 17, 2009
heh heh... Monday says Miles is only 5'8" but don't sell him short...
ballhawk - March 17, 2009
These accouncers sound like they're just phoning it in
The commentary on MLB09 is better.
lswaidz - March 17, 2009
Announcers even
lswaidz - March 17, 2009
Good hustle on the
part of Miles. Infield single on a ball hit towards second base.
DamonBerryhillsMitt - March 17, 2009
And then RJ
came up and knocked in two on a gapper to left-center.
DamonBerryhillsMitt - March 17, 2009
These guys are somehow making an 11-3 blowout of the Dodgers boring as hell.
Maybe that’s their strategy.
daver - March 17, 2009
This is painful to listen to.
I actually muted my headphones a few minutes ago. I’m sure they still sound like bad actors reading from a script.
“The pitch. It’s a fastball. The batter swings. Contact. The ball is flying on an angular trajectory towards the left quadrant of the field. The ball has left the park.”
lswaidz - March 17, 2009
I know...I get more emotion from the data that comes up on Gameday.
daver - March 17, 2009
Sean Marshall in to pitch.
daver - March 17, 2009
"He is sure a tall drink of water."
lswaidz - March 17, 2009
3 up, 3 down for Marshall.
daver - March 17, 2009
It is a special St. Paddy's appearence
Doggie Stalker - March 17, 2009
He's awfully tall for a leprechaun.
daver - March 17, 2009
To me it look like a leprechaun?
anyone else who seen the leprechaun say YEEAH!!!
Chanman25 - March 17, 2009
YEEAH!!!!!!!!!!!
daver - March 17, 2009
Now this is my special leprechaun flute passed down 1000s years by my great-great grandfather, who was irish

Tasteless T-shirt of the day award goes to...
Saw a guy walking with his girlfriend in Wrigleyville today. They both appeared to be suffering from flu-like symptoms. Guy was wearing a shirt that said…
“You must be Irish ’cause my dick is Dublin”
I suppose if I were younger that’d probably seem funny-cool, but now it just seems funny-sad. It’s hell being mature and all that…
ballhawk - March 17, 2009
that shirt happens to be on the same site for sale
that the BCB shirt is from
Cubbie-Tim - March 17, 2009
