The active roster on the Cubs website shows 27 players this morning. There are 13 position players, so those slots have all been completed. There are 14 pitchers, so two of the currently listed hurlers will not make the trip north. On the bubble, I think, would be David Patton (who must make the team or be offered back to the Rockies or waived), Jeff Samardzija, Angel Guzman (out of options) and Chad Gaudin.
What I would like to see is Gaudin traded (good luck, given his poor spring) and Samardzija sent to Iowa to be stretched out to start, with Patton and Guzman making the team. Patton is expected to throw today. Samardzija and Guzman both pitched yesterday, both reasonably well (the runs off them were as a result of Kosuke Fukudome's misplay in CF). Presumably, we will see Kevin Gregg today, as he hasn't pitched in a major league game in a week.
The Angels, who have the best record in either the Cactus or Grapefruit League at 23-6, will send Nick Adenhart, one of their top young pitchers, to face the Cubs today and Brian Fuentes, Scot Shields and Kevin Jepsen will also see action. The Cubs counter with Sean Marshall, who is making his final spring start; the rest of the week will see Carlos Zambrano tomorrow, Ryan Dempster on Thursday, and then Ted Lilly and Rich Harden in New York, before Z starts Monday on Opening Day. (Yes, it's really almost here!)
The Cubs' (and major league) spring training attendance record should fall today; the record of 193,993 was set in 2005 and today's crowd needs to be at least 7,987 to break the mark. Obviously, the larger number of dates this year is the reason for the new record; the average attendance record of 12,125 is in no danger (2009 average: 10,942). Thanks to HoHoKam PA announcer Tim Sheridan for the attendance info, from his site Boys of Spring.
Today's game is available on broadcasts with the Angels announcers, which means we get to hear the wackiness of Rex Hudler again. It's on KLAA radio in the Los Angeles area and on FSN West. The FSN West telecast will also be picked up by MLB Network nationally. You can find these also at the MLB.com Mediacenter.
Discuss amongst yourselves.

It appears Chad Fox's fantasy camp is finally over.
I received a Gordo tweet a little while ago stating:
I agree with Al. Let’s trade Gaudin, send the Shark to Iowa and roll with the good General and Gooz.
daver - March 31, 2009
I'm suprised,
so many people want to get rid of Gaudin, I think I’d much rather take him over Guzman.
tizzle - March 31, 2009
why?
he failed to impress last season, and this ST has been even WORSE.
drewishdrewid - March 31, 2009
Guzman has more upside, even after all his injuries...
He appears to be healthy for the first time in years to start the season, has gas to spare, and can either start, or preferably slot in the ’pen. Gaudin could help bring something we need from an AL team familiar with him.
Jimmyeatworld - March 31, 2009
I think it's the bullpenn
He had great numbers in Oakland as a starter. I just don’t think he’s cut out to be a reliever. But I do still trust him and I would take him over Guzman because of his Oakland numbers.
wrigleyrocker12 - March 31, 2009
You might want to take a look at his numbers as a starter again.
He started 34 games for the A’s in ’07: 4.42 ERA (95 ERA+), 1.530 WHIP (100 walks in 199.3 innings).
daver - March 31, 2009
You're right
But he did win 11 games. I was actually referring to last years numbers, 5-3 with a 3.59 ERA, and 42 K’s in 62 IP. Plus he’s still only 26.
wrigleyrocker12 - March 31, 2009
Let's not get into wins and losses.
And last season, as a starter, Gaudin went 3-2 with a 3.75 ERA and a 26:10 K:BB in 36 innings. Not bad, actually, but the Cubs aren’t likely to use him as a starter.
daver - March 31, 2009
Why not?
Move Marshall to the pen and then you have 2 lefties instead of one.
wrigleyrocker12 - March 31, 2009
BECAUSE GAUDIN SUCKS!
Geez. Marshall a good pitcher, who has earned his starting spot. Gaudin, especially after the dumpster, was not very good. Why give him a spot better used by someone else?
drewishdrewid - March 31, 2009
Gaudin doesn't stink
Once again, his Oakland numbers.
wrigleyrocker12 - March 31, 2009
How much of that is aided by the fact that McAfee Coliseum
is a pitcher’s park?
Bill Potter - March 31, 2009
Are you sayingqJake Peavy is bad too?
wrigleyrocker12 - March 31, 2009
No. I'm saying there needs to be an adjustment to account for the park
On of the concerns with Peavy is that his overall numbers would come up because he does play in a dominant pitcher’s park.
Now, I don’t think McAfee Coliseum was the entire reason for Gaudin’s success, but I think it was a factor.
Bill Potter - March 31, 2009
LOL, yeah, that 1.530 WHIP in '07 looks great.
Or how ’bout that 36:42 K:BB in ’06? Great stuff.
daver - March 31, 2009
So?
All that matters is that he stranded them.
wrigleyrocker12 - March 31, 2009
can you guys continue this at the bottom of the thread? ;-)
I keep trying to catch up on all the entries and new ones keep popping up above me…
thx…
ballhawk - March 31, 2009
Annoying isn't it?
daver - March 31, 2009
wouldn't be so bad if the "z" key really did its job
ballhawk - March 31, 2009
that's an annoying bug
that’s never been fixed.
drewishdrewid - March 31, 2009
I've gone to using
shift+c to jump to the bottom of the page, and then using the c key to get to the newest post and using the z key from that point on.
gwood - March 31, 2009
Exactly what I do
Clutch16 - March 31, 2009
z is the only key that seems to do anything for me.
daver - March 31, 2009
the T R L keys are going to be mighty jealous...
ballhawk - March 31, 2009
Actually, I take it back.
The c function is working now.
daver - March 31, 2009
huh.
I’ll have to remember that.
drewishdrewid - March 31, 2009
cool - it's a bit convoluted but it works
how’d you figure that out?
ballhawk - March 31, 2009
Not too sure
I think I just got lucky once. I was getting really sick of missing new posts that were above my position in the thread because if I pressed the z key, they would just get skipped. So I took some time to figure out a solution, and that is what worked.
gwood - March 31, 2009
Oh, he stranded them alright.
He left them right there on base so another A’s pitcher could come in and try to bail him out.
daver - March 31, 2009
How about his 1.28 WHIP
In 08?
wrigleyrocker12 - March 31, 2009
I'm not talking about those
I’m talking about his 08 numbers.
wrigleyrocker12 - March 31, 2009
That's, like, half a season.
daver - March 31, 2009
That's more
Thann Guzmans ever pitched.
wrigleyrocker12 - March 31, 2009
Right. I wonder why?
Oh yeah…he’s been injured.
daver - March 31, 2009
I know
but the point is, Gaudin has a bigger sample size, injuries or not.
wrigleyrocker12 - March 31, 2009
but that's what we're using
to suggest that Guzman has a higher upside. We KNOW what we get with Gaudin, and it’s not good.
drewishdrewid - March 31, 2009
It was in Oakland
And Gaudin is still young. Even younger than Guzman.
wrigleyrocker12 - March 31, 2009
he played here
you know. I remember. He’d go out there, and leave runners on base for Howry or Marmol.
drewishdrewid - March 31, 2009
Everyone has a bad stretch
He started out great, remember.
wrigleyrocker12 - March 31, 2009
Right.
And that sample size reveals him to be a journeyman, slightly below league average (per ERA+) pitcher. Those of us on Guzman’s side would rather gamble on Angel’s potential upside, that’s all.
daver - March 31, 2009
And in 2009 Spring Training
Gaudin’s WHIP (walks plus hits per 1 inning pitched) is 2.14.
drewishdrewid - March 31, 2009
Look at his career splits...
he’s great in Oakland and Petco….
santoswoodenlegs - March 31, 2009
As I tried to say above
With the scatter-shot schedule to begin the season, that’s almost assuredly what will happen. Marshall probably won’t see his first start until April 25th.
Clutch16 - March 31, 2009
Marshall isn't a LOOGY (neither is Cotts)...
…so the lack of lefthandedness in the bullpen really doesn’t bother me. Sean has earned his spot as a starter. Given Gaudin’s overall numbers, I wouldn’t even consider starting him over Sean.
daver - March 31, 2009
Looking at Gaudin's numbers over the course of his career....
…I’m just not sold on the guy. True, he was pitching very well for Oakland last season before he was traded to the Cubs, but his numbers in other years are all over the map – and not in a good way.
Meanwhile, I still believe that Angel Guzman has good stuff. I just think he has confidence issues, which may spring from the inconsistent playing time he’s had to endure because of his injury woes. I’m gambling that if he can settle in as a reliever, he can finally show some of that talent.
daver - March 31, 2009
FWIW, Guzman did look sharp yesterday
Both of his breaking balls consistently fooled Kansas City hitters over his 1.1 innings. The one quibble I had yesterday was his throwing over to first to hold the runners – it seemed like he got a tad preoccupied with it.
Still, he’s looking better, and if the Cubs can find a way to keep him on the roster, I think he has the physical tools to really emerge as a key bullpen component during the season.
Bill Potter - March 31, 2009
Agree on Gaudin. I keep seeing post about
his past numbers, but he has yet to have a solid performance where I feel confident about him. He just seems to have never gotten off the ground with the Cubs. I hope they settle on Guzman. I think his body is ready to let him pitch and a few good outings could send him off.
willie mays hayes' gloves - March 31, 2009
naturally it also depends on the roles each would serve
Gaudin is essentially a long reliever and Guzman now is a short middle reliever.
Going with 12 pitchers diminishes the need for a long reliever
Gaudin appears to be lock and load and loaded
Ivy Walls - March 31, 2009
Loaded for what?
willie mays hayes' gloves - March 31, 2009
loaded enough
to run into a dumpster.
drewishdrewid - March 31, 2009
gosh that only took one post
loaded into the cannon to be shot to another venue
Ivy Walls - March 31, 2009
He's
at least shown he can play at the major league level, I dont remember the last time I had any hope for Guzman.
tizzle - March 31, 2009
As mentioned, Guzman's problem has been injuries.
Like Kerry Wood, Angel may be able to avoid those troubles pitching out the pen instead of trying to be a starter.
daver - March 31, 2009
I'm with you daver...
Patience and hope will be a Cubs fan best friend this year.
Jimmyeatworld - March 31, 2009
Also,
I think I’d like to see what Guzman can bring in a trade, I mean if Gaudin is as bad as everyone thinks, I dont thing they would get anything useful for him for him.
tizzle - March 31, 2009
Yabbut is moving Guzman because he can bring more a reason to keep Gaudin on the
roster? If he is going to pitch like he has since his arrival, I don’t want him on the roster. Sometimes the best move is not to make a trade.
willie mays hayes' gloves - March 31, 2009
Cubs lineup for today
Per Muskat Ramblings:
Alfonso Soriano, LF
Kosuke Fukudome, CF
Derrek Lee, 1B
Micah Hoffpauir, RF
Aramis Ramirez, 3B
Mike Fontenot, 2B
Geovany Soto, C
Ryan Theriot, SS
Sean Marshall, P
Bill Potter - March 31, 2009
Good line-up...
Except for Hoff in the OF. It is ST though, so it can’t really hurt. Good to see Dome in the #2 hole, where he will see more fastballs, and also be able to use his plate discipline to the team advantage. Go Cubs Go.
Jimmyeatworld - March 31, 2009
+1
Why is Hoff in the lineup at OF? He has proven that he can hit, why not just put Joey out there? Hoff looks so much more comfortable at first. At this point, I don’t think his OF defense is going to improve much, so why force it?
willie mays hayes' gloves - March 31, 2009
Presumably because
Hoff will (unfortunately) get time in the outfield during the season. Might as well give him practice in games that don’t count.
gwood - March 31, 2009
I think that's a stretch. If you are forced to use Hoff in the OF to get his bat
in the lineup, then it will come back to bite you. I love his bat, but hate his play in the outfield.
willie mays hayes' gloves - March 31, 2009
Same here.
I’m at peace with Hoffpauir’s place on the roster. He’s earned it. In fact, I’d like to see him to spell DLee at first once a week or so. But, with five outfielders on the roster already, keep him on the bench or in the infield.
daver - March 31, 2009
Lou
seems to love Hoff’s bat enough to play him in right field in order to give Bradley some days off, while not hurting the offensive production as much. Don’t get me wrong, I would much rather see Gathright or Reed in right when Bradley needs a day off, but Lou seems to be enamored enough with Hoff’s bat to harm the team’s defense.
gwood - March 31, 2009
Seems to be another one of his blind spots.
willie mays hayes' gloves - March 31, 2009
Hoffpauir will doubtful see the outfield when the games count
I think Hoffpauir in the outfield today is a case of Lou trying to get him as many at bats as possible.
BLou - March 31, 2009
I hope you are right
but I fear Lou will seize the opportunity to get both DLee’s and Hoff’s bat in the lineup when Bradley needs a day off. unfortunately that means Hoff plays in right.
gwood - March 31, 2009
I'd rather see Hoffpauir begin to prepare for a pinch-hitting role
He’s gotten plenty of at bats this spring, and with a week to go, it would be prudent for him to begin mentally and physically preparing to move to a pinch-hitting role, as that will be his primary role this season.
Bill Potter - March 31, 2009
We have to keep Patton
Either offer Colorado something to send him to the minors or leave him on the roster. If you aren’t going to keep Patton after what he’s shown, there is no point in even drafting a Rule 5 player.
Samardzija goes down to Iowa to stretch out and start. That solves one spot. My best guess is that Gaudin comes up with an “injury” in the next couple of days. Otherwise, unless you can make a deal for him, just release him. The trade was for Harden, not Gaudin. There are lots of players of equal ability to Gaudin out there.
Josh Timmers - March 31, 2009
I wonder if Colorado would have interest in Gaudin
That would kill two birds with one stone.
Bill Potter - March 31, 2009
After what he has shown, would you?
willie mays hayes' gloves - March 31, 2009
I doubt it
Unless we pay Gaudin’s salary. They don’t want to take a contract back. They’d want a prospect.
Besides, that wouldn’t make much sense from our standpoint. We only need to kill one bird because the Shark can go down to Iowa. If we ship Gaudin out to Colorado, then we have the roster spot to keep Patton and we wouldn’t need to offer anything to Colorado. Makes more sense to just release Gaudin.
Josh Timmers - March 31, 2009
How realistic, do ya think,
is it for that Gaudin “mystery injury” scenario to play out? Is that a common practice among MLB teams around cut-time? Cuz I would love for this situation to unfold as you speculated/hoped it might.
DamonBerryhillsMitt - March 31, 2009
I seem to remember
the Cubs pulling it a few times in years past.
Josh Timmers - March 31, 2009
Gaudin could conceivably file a grievance
If Gaudin wants to stay (or knows he can’t catch on with another team if released), then he could accept the “mystery injury.” However, if he doesn’t feel that he is injured, he could file a grievance in order to force the Cubs to put him on the active roster, trade him, or release him.
Bill Potter - March 31, 2009
Ok
I was wondering what kind of say-so Chad would have in the whole matter.
DamonBerryhillsMitt - March 31, 2009
Keep Patton AND Guzman???
This is the Cubs, not the Pirates or the Marlins. We are trying to make the playoffs. So we are going to allocate not one but two valuable bullpen spots to what can best be described to projects?!? On a pitching staff that has three starters in Lilly, Harden and Marshall who aren’t known for pitching long into games. And then out of the other side of mouths we will hear howling screams of disapproval on how much Carlos Marmol is used.
If the Cubs like Patton, then the Cubs need to swing a deal with Colorado to enable them to send him to the minors. If it weren’t for Patton being a Rule V pickup he would have never even sniffed Mesa this spring. Getting carried away with his performance in spring training games is very foolish, no matter what his promise and upside down the road might be.
Guzman is an enigmatic injury-plagued reliever who can’t get it done. Its just that simple. You can only fool yourself for so long and keep saying this kid has a big arm. At some point the bait needs to be cut. If he had options left, then he most definitely would already be assigned to Iowa.
Keep Gaudin and cross fingers. Scour the waiver wire for another serviceable option for the last bullpen spot. And pray like hell that the arms down in Des Moines are ready and able to help out this bullpen at some stage in the season.
BLou - March 31, 2009
Give the outrage a rest will ya Chicken Little?
Jimmyeatworld - March 31, 2009
The early part of the schedule
Is dictating that we really only need 4 starters to start. What happens to your equation when Marshall is your long relief for Harden/Lilly?
Clutch16 - March 31, 2009
you would have cut Woody
before last year, wouldn’t you.
if the arms we send to Iowa are the arms you say aren’t ready for what we need now, why will they be any better later in the season? After all, AAA is for dregs like Pie and Murton.
drewishdrewid - March 31, 2009
Wrong. Gaudin sucks. The guy can't miss a bat. You say their nit the Pirates or the
Marlin, but you advocate keeping a guy who has shown absolutely no ability to get anyone out? Move Patton or Guzman, but don’t pin your hopes on Gaudin suddenly finding it somehow.
willie mays hayes' gloves - March 31, 2009
But
its not much different than pinning your hopes on Guzman suddenly finding it. I guess I just don’t think either decision would be too bad.
tizzle - March 31, 2009
Guzman has a bigger upside. Either one is a gamble, I just feel that going
with Guzman is a smarter bet.
willie mays hayes' gloves - March 31, 2009
I can see
your point, there are def reasons for taking either guy.
tizzle - March 31, 2009
The waiver wire isn't likely to yield anything better than...
…Rule V-type guys and enigmantic injury-plagued relievers. Let’s just roll with the ones we’ve got and make adjustments as possible/necessary.
daver - March 31, 2009
I keep Gaudin and his $2 million salary and say sayonara to Guzman
BLou - March 31, 2009
What exactly has Gaudin done to prove that he deserves that $2 million?
willie mays hayes' gloves - March 31, 2009
Exactly
He’s a journeyman, nothing more.
Josh Timmers - March 31, 2009
They could go that route, too.
It all depends on whether Gaudin’s horrible performance both during spring training and toward the end of last season has placed his effectiveness in doubt in the eyes of Lou Piniella.
At this point, I’d rather gamble on Guzman’s good stuff.
daver - March 31, 2009
If Guzman is really as you say
then you just release him.
And I don’t know why you think Gaudin is worth keeping. What has he shown in his major league career that shows that he’s anything more than a replaceable journeyman?
Josh Timmers - March 31, 2009
But
what has Guzman ever shown that shows he’s anything more?
tizzle - March 31, 2009
Agreed
Precisely WHAT has Angel Guzman shown that makes people excited about him being a piece of a bullpen situation that is otherwise dubious and is expected to get a heavy workout? Angel Guzman is Roberto Novoa only with more injuries.
BLou - March 31, 2009
Only you would make a comparison like that. Picking a pitcher
who eternally sucked to compare to Guzman doesn’t make your case any stronger.
willie mays hayes' gloves - March 31, 2009
because
current performance shows Gaudin to be pretty crappy, and potential upside is in favor of Guzman.
drewishdrewid - March 31, 2009
Just like "potential upside" on Felix PIe, right??
The same Pie who is batting .197 in Baltimore camp and is being beat out for a roster spot by Louis Montanez.
BLou - March 31, 2009
didn't this already get disproven?
Pie is going to get plenty of starts in Baltimore. Certainly, he’ll get better treatment then he ever got in Chicago.
It’s like if a ball-player doesn’t spring, full formed, from the forehead of Pete Rose, you can’t possibly think that it’s worth it to take a flyer on him.
And I LOVE how you constantly worry about how Harden isn’t known for going ate in games when last year, you wanted him to father your children.
drewishdrewid - March 31, 2009
Rich Harden is an ace caliber pitcher pal
Felix Pie? He isn’t going to make the Baltimore 25 man roster by all accounts. Montanez and Luke Scott are going to be playing in left field. But hey, feel free to keep defending the great Felix Pie and how Lou Piniella destroyed the 24 year old bust.
BLou - March 31, 2009
Rich Harden didn't look like an "ace calibar pitcher" in his lone playoff appearance last year pal.
This isn’t Pittsburgh. We need players that can perform under the pressure cooker of the playoffs.
santoswoodenlegs - March 31, 2009
It'll be tough for Montanez to beat out Pie
Now that Montanez has been optioned to Norfolk. And Luke Scott is going to DH most days.
Bill Potter - March 31, 2009
400+ at-bats
Despite an inconsistent showing in camp, Pie is expected to get 400-plus at-bats as Baltimore’s primary left fielder.
http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/chi-28-rogers-baseball-mar28,0,7239024.column
400+ at bats! in a SINGLE SEASON!
If Rich Harden were an ace-caliber pitcher, “PAL”, he’d go longer than 5 innings on a regular basis.
drewishdrewid - March 31, 2009
Guzman
has had potential for a long time now, I just don’t see him fulfilling it. And I don’t think Gaudin’s current performance will stay the same. He’s obviously not as bad as he’s shown this spring.
tizzle - March 31, 2009
is he as bad
as he showed last year?
drewishdrewid - March 31, 2009
Well
only when he came to the cubs, otherwise his first half was pretty good. I’d take my chances with a guy that has shown he can succeed.
tizzle - March 31, 2009
Again, go look at his 2003-2007 numbers.
daver - March 31, 2009
But Guzman's
numbers still don’t suggest he’ll be any better than Gaudin.
tizzle - March 31, 2009
Chad Gaudin has pitched 449 innings at the major league level.
Angel Guzman has pitched 96 innings at the major league level.
The point here is, when you look really hard at Gaudin’s numbers, you can see what you’re probably getting. Guzman has a much smaller sample but much greater potential.
daver - March 31, 2009
Ya know,
I really used to see that potential in Guzman, but I don’t anymore. If he makes the team I really hope I’m wrong.
tizzle - March 31, 2009
But he hasn't shown any flashes of goodness
Gaudin has. And I say this once again, GAUDIN IS YOUNGER.
wrigleyrocker12 - March 31, 2009
what are these flashes? I don’t really remember Gaudin coming in last year at any point and really impressing.
drewishdrewid - March 31, 2009
Not with the Cubs
With Oakland.
wrigleyrocker12 - March 31, 2009
I remember a couple games against the brewers..
.. where he got Braun looking a couple times and he looked real good
dlee25 - March 31, 2009
Yeah, we have seen flashes of goodness.
Guzman put together a stretch of good outings as a reliever in ‘07. He had a couple good outings as a starter in ’06. He’s been injured. And age isn’t the same factor for pitchers as it is for position players. Pitchers often develop later.
daver - March 31, 2009
Gaudin has a bigger sample size
Gaudin has had more than “a stretch of good outings”. He had a nice half season with Oakland last year.
wrigleyrocker12 - March 31, 2009
I've seen enough of Guzman to take a pass on his future potential
This guy has been living off the potential label for years. And he has never delivered. He needed to seize opportunity this spring and failed. Therefore I’m inclined to go with Gaudin. In Gaudin I know what the good and bad is. “IF” he can get his act together then he is a proven rubber arm inning-eater out of the pen.
BLou - March 31, 2009
I'm really glad you're not the GM
we’d have David Eckstein on the team, because we know what his good and bad are.
drewishdrewid - March 31, 2009
He impressed in 2007...
before he got injured. I don’t know, I think I’d rather have Guzman’s upside.
IowaCubs- - March 31, 2009
That's a little like saying
that because the bankers brought in record profits from 2000-2008, we should expect them to do so now.
Gaudin came to the Cubs, and didn’t seem to bring ANYTHING with him.
drewishdrewid - March 31, 2009
The point is
He’s shown that he’s a good pitcher. Guzman hasn’t.
wrigleyrocker12 - March 31, 2009
Using the term "good" a bit subjectively there, aren't you?
Archie - March 31, 2009
Fine
Decent. Happy? Gaudin is also younger. It just makes no sense to take Guzman over him.
wrigleyrocker12 - March 31, 2009
Guzman's
been with the cubs for 10 years, and he hasn’t shown anything either.
tizzle - March 31, 2009
Gaudin
has more experience, and more success. Thats why I would take him.
tizzle - March 31, 2009
tell me
because I really don’t remember. Were you in favor of Maddux coming back to the cubs in the second half of last year?
drewishdrewid - March 31, 2009
no
tizzle - March 31, 2009
Are you intentionally ignoring the point that's been made several times over?
Guzman has been injured.
daver - March 31, 2009
I'm not ignoring it
Thats one of the reasons why I don’t think Guzman has it anymore.
tizzle - March 31, 2009
Just like Kerry Wood didn't have it anymore?
He’s not injured now. He had (IIRC) TJ surgery. He’s recovered from it. As long as he limits his IP, he’ll be fine.
daver - March 31, 2009
So
are you suggesting Prior still has upside
tizzle - March 31, 2009
The Padres seem to think so.
daver - March 31, 2009
Prior and Woody’s situations aren’t comparable. And there’s sufficient evidence that Prior ISN’T recovered…
drewishdrewid - March 31, 2009
And I
don’t think Guzman and Wood are comparable, Wood actually had talent.
tizzle - March 31, 2009
I think
you’re almost deliberately ignoring Guzman’s potential.
drewishdrewid - March 31, 2009
Im not ignoring it,
I know he once had potential, I just dont think he does anymore. And Gaudin is like 2 years younger than Guzman, so I’d rather take Gaudin’s potential.
tizzle - March 31, 2009
We've seen Gaudin's capabilities.
We haven’t seen Guzman’s.
drewishdrewid - March 31, 2009
And
Gaudin is better
tizzle - March 31, 2009
Sorry, you appear to have misread something there.
We haven’t seen Guzman’s capabilities in as large a sample as we have Gaudin. So we can’t say that Gaudin is better.
daver - March 31, 2009
continue
to disagree.
Guzman’s upsides are better.
drewishdrewid - March 31, 2009
how
how can you say that, Gaudin is younger, so i would assume he has some upside too.
tizzle - March 31, 2009
and relax
you seem to be taking this personally
tizzle - March 31, 2009
performance isn't a function of age
especially when it comes to pitchers. Gaudin is younger than Maddux; woud you say Gaudin is a better pitcher?
drewishdrewid - March 31, 2009
ummm
what?
tizzle - March 31, 2009
did I stutter?
drewishdrewid - March 31, 2009
you just
didnt make any sense, so why dont you calm down slick.
tizzle - March 31, 2009
you just said that Gaudin was better than Guzman
in part because he’s younger.
Gaudin is younger than a whole LOT of pitchers. Is he better than all of them too?
We know what we get with Gaudin, and it’s a bag of suck. Guzman has a much greater POTENTIAL. You’d think that a team looking to achieve HIGHER than last year’s bar would go for more POTENTIAL.
drewishdrewid - March 31, 2009
I disagree
with you about Guzman, sorry bud.
tizzle - March 31, 2009
we're soooooooooooooooo
close to this edge —→
digitalbenjamin - March 31, 2009
I fancy myself a pretty edgy guy.
daver - March 31, 2009
Dude that was crazy! Your subject line wrapped! EPIC WIN!
digitalbenjamin - March 31, 2009
Edgy like this guy?
or this guy

ballhawk - March 31, 2009
I'm edgy like a very, very, very, very, very, very sharp razor.
daver - March 31, 2009
I hope we don't go
digitalbenjamin - March 31, 2009
no i said
Gaudin might have more upside
tizzle - March 31, 2009
Perhaps.
But, again, we have 449 innings to go on with Gaudin. Less than 100 with Guzman.
daver - March 31, 2009
I just weep
At how good that kids was at 22 years. To think the Cubs could have him, Z, Harden, Dempster, and Lilly. That’s 3 aces, and 2 #2 starters.
wrigleyrocker12 - March 31, 2009
I have to respectfully disagree with your rationalization on Guzman
BLou - March 31, 2009
Well, at the end of the day...
…whether it’s Guzman or Gaudin (or Patton), none of these guys is a silver bullet for what ails the Cubs bullpen.
daver - March 31, 2009
*ahem*
His first 10 appearances in a Cubs uniform:
W L ERA G IP H R ER HR HBP BB SO
2 1 1.54 10 11.2 8 3 2 1 0 1 13
K/IP of 1.16, WHIP of .803 and 13Ks vs. 1BB
I wouldn’t call that nothing. Of course, then the dumpster happened, and things fell off a cliff.
Clutch16 - March 31, 2009
fair enough
drewishdrewid - March 31, 2009
I think the key here
is that we know what we have with Gaudin, a journeyman reliever with little upside. Guzman has shown really good stuff, but his opportunity to excel at the major league level has been cut short by injury. If Guzman can avoid another injury (as he should pitching out of the bullpen), he will be better than Gaudin.
gwood - March 31, 2009
Guzman hasn't shown anything
Good or bad. He’s been injured. You take the chance with someone who has upside. With Gaudin, you’re getting someone who you know is going to be mediocre at best. With Guzman, you get someone who might be worse, but at least has a chance to help the team.
Josh Timmers - March 31, 2009
This isn't Pittsburgh
This is Chicago, and we are trying once again to make the playoffs. Cubs don’t have the luxury of squirreling away a couple projects on a 25 man roster.
BLou - March 31, 2009
How bout we focus on "winning" in the playoffs instead of just "making" them?
santoswoodenlegs - March 31, 2009
Huh?
Are you arrogant enough to sit here at the end of March and say the Cubs already have made the 2009 playoffs?
BLou - March 31, 2009
Are you stupid enough to not understand what I just said?
santoswoodenlegs - March 31, 2009
drewishdrewid - March 31, 2009
No
He’s saying that the cubs have made the playoffs the last 2 years, so if they made them again and didn’t go anywhere again, it wouldn’t be successful. Their eyes are on the world series.
wrigleyrocker12 - March 31, 2009
u r smrt.
santoswoodenlegs - March 31, 2009
we don't have the luxury
of using players that we know aren’t up to snuff.
drewishdrewid - March 31, 2009
We only use players who use...
…whole leaf tobacco.
IowaCubs- - March 31, 2009
But if the Cubs resort to the waiver wire...
…they’ll be doing just that – squirreling away a project they hope will turn out to be better than Guzman.
daver - March 31, 2009
Oh
But they have the luxury of squirreling away a mediocre journeyman like Gaudin?
This isn’t Pittsburgh. The Cubs don’t have the luxury of keeping Gaudin.
Josh Timmers - March 31, 2009
Exactly.
And I’d add another thing Guzman has shown: scouting reports. IIRC, at one point, scouts cited Guzman has having better pure stuff than Carlos Zambrano. Angel just hasn’t been able to stay healthy. Again, if he can settle into his role as a bullpen guy, he’ll be just fine – and likely better than Chad Gaudin.
daver - March 31, 2009
Ahem.
All 3 of these guys average about 6 innings per start. Jake Peavy averages about 6.3.
santoswoodenlegs - March 31, 2009
BTW Cubs attendance down 9.98% from the record on game average
Makes sense in light of the economic climate. like to know the other teams in the Cactus League to compare…
Ivy Walls - March 31, 2009
also makes sense...
in light of the increased supply of spring training tickets. There were more games. Not saying that the economy wasn’t a factor, however I’d put money on the fact that had this been a normal spring tickets would not have been down that much.
dmlichte - March 31, 2009
that is why I wanted to see the other games
the thing is like always it is a combination of things.
One could try to remove the early extra games and compare the same set of games and dates to get a better idea. The thing about average gate is that it usually should not deviate that much even with extra dates, 10% is 10% though.
Ivy Walls - March 31, 2009
Last week of ST here we come!!!
Hopefully this means the last of the snow is gone as well…
halfblindcubbiegirl - March 31, 2009
Marmol needs arm insurance from Lloyds of London
Because I’ve got to tell you, if you guys want a bullpen to include as its membership David Patton, Angel Guzman, Neal Cotts, Aaron Heilman and Luis Vizcaino to go along with three starting pitchers in Ted Lilly, Rich Harden and Sean Marshall who don’t pitch particularly deep into ballgames then expect Carlos Marmol to lead the league in appearances and bullpen innings pitched.
All of you who endorse Patton and Guzman in this bullpen has better not be the same names screaming at Lou Piniella when he throws Marmol out on the mound a bajillion times out of necessity.
BLou - March 31, 2009
I suppose that Gaudin is the elixer that will cure this illness?
willie mays hayes' gloves - March 31, 2009
It beats putting our faith in a Single A pitcher and a Guzman who perpetually disappoints when he otherwise isn't on the DL
BLou - March 31, 2009
Guadin is Bob Howry reduex.
santoswoodenlegs - March 31, 2009
Howry
was actually a good pitcher for the cubs for a few years, and he’s bound to come back from an awful year.
tizzle - March 31, 2009
he was a good pitcher for us in '06 and '07
But I think he’s done. The guy’s been around for a long time.
elgato - March 31, 2009
at 35?
Doubtful.
halfblindcubbiegirl - March 31, 2009
I'm willing
to bet he isnt as bad as he was last year.
tizzle - March 31, 2009
I bet he's worse
when you depend on a mid 90s fastball on the outside corner and hit 35… velocity becomes more like low 90s high 80s.
I think he’s done.
halfblindcubbiegirl - March 31, 2009
agree
to disagree
tizzle - March 31, 2009
I concur
He’ll be worse!! He’s a nice guy but throws nothing but 90 mph fastballs over the plate. He is meat to any good hitter. He’s nothing but a middlin middle reliever that never could make it as a closer.
Itchy - March 31, 2009
And that is likely still better than banking on Angel Guzman or putting a David Patton into the fire
Bob Howry DID serve an important role in 2008 because he DID take the ball and DID give his team bullpen innings. Granted, he often stunk. But don’t underestimate the innings he ate. Nobody was able to step up and do the role job that Howry did. I’ll take my chances on the “proven” Gaudin fulfilling such a role much more than I will a Single A pitcher in Patton who has chance of being destroyed more than helped by being in the bigs too soon. And Guzman too.
BLou - March 31, 2009
So just as long as they "eat" the innings...
it’s ok with you if they also take juicy steaming dumps on the mound while they do it?
santoswoodenlegs - March 31, 2009
SWL - are you feeling okay?
it’s not like you to use such descriptive words when a simple picture would do…
ballhawk - March 31, 2009
daver - March 31, 2009
I would rather
fill the role that Howry played (crappy innings eater) with someone who could actually get batters out. I have more faith in Guzman than Gaudin.
gwood - March 31, 2009
unbelieveable
your rewriting of history knows no bounds.
drewishdrewid - March 31, 2009
Because I’ve got to tell you
It really is like a compulsion with you, yes.
All of you who endorse Patton and Guzman in this bullpen has better not be the same names screaming at Lou Piniella when he throws Marmol out on the mound a bajillion times out of necessity.
Or what?
drewishdrewid - March 31, 2009

Why is there no

gwood - March 31, 2009
Oh yeah, you're right. No idea.
I’ve got the audio running now. Sounds like Marshall’s in a spot of trouble.
daver - March 31, 2009
why isn't the mlb.tv link active yet?
santoswoodenlegs - March 31, 2009
MLB's Webmaster is too busy with the Guzman vs. Gaudin debate.
daver - March 31, 2009
Nice

I have been pulling my hair out...

14theofleury - March 31, 2009
Angels announcers
talking about the Cubs lack of intensity during base running drills, compared to the Angels
“the cubs players don’t wear their helmets, the players just look like they are going through the motions”
Marshall K’s Hunter to end the inning. 1-0 Angels
TheRamZamDLEE - March 31, 2009

Prolly happened
cuz the Cubs don’t wear their helmets during base running drills.
DamonBerryhillsMitt - March 31, 2009
They show no passion for the drill.
daver - March 31, 2009
Make sure you have safe search turned on when you google that phrase. Yowsa!
drewishdrewid - March 31, 2009
And he gets picked off first.
I think I’m just going to focus on my work here.
daver - March 31, 2009
sigh.
at least it’s not a mistake he’s likely to make a lot.
drewishdrewid - March 31, 2009

TheRamZamDLEE - March 31, 2009
Naturally, DLee immediately singles.

I'd let that one slip by. :)

basehit to left
TheRamZamDLEE - March 31, 2009
haz anyone got a working link to the mlb.tv broadcast?
santoswoodenlegs - March 31, 2009
I refreshed the mlb.com home page about five times...
…and the link never showed up.
daver - March 31, 2009
it's not active for me either
santoswoodenlegs - March 31, 2009
Yet the ad stating the game will be available today...

14theofleury - March 31, 2009
it's like those GEICO eyes...
ballhawk - March 31, 2009
Still no MLB.TV.
This is weak.

TheRamZamDLEE - March 31, 2009
The General better make the team!
SWL you have to put his pic on General Patton’s photo if he does!
Chanman25 - March 31, 2009
I didn't understand the connection, but I liked Shanghai's photo much better
of course, probably not so much if Patton’s head goes on Berry’s body…
ballhawk - March 31, 2009
David Patton....General Patton??
tisk tisk tisk
Chanman25 - March 31, 2009
nope, got that part (duh...)
The other day Shangai posted a Halle Berry pic right in response to a General Patton pic. The connection went right over my head, but given the lovely outfit Halle was wearing, I didn’t see a need to ask questions then…
ballhawk - March 31, 2009
Ladies and gentlemen...Sean Christopher Marshall!
daver - March 31, 2009
he's got a twin brother too, perhaps sign him??!!
Marshall is one of my favorite players, being that he’s from my hometown. Plus, I got his autograph when he was a rookie while at a game in DC. Met his pap and twin bro too, so I want him to do very well!
Chanman25 - March 31, 2009
Oh yeah.
I wonder what’s become of his twin brother – he was a minor league pitcher at some point recently. That’s cool you met Sean. I’ve always been a fan, too.
daver - March 31, 2009
yeah, though I almost got Lee's autograph first
I was in the stands at the dugout. He came RIGHT over to my area, so I decided to roll the ball to him to make it sure got there. It didn’t because it turned. By the time I got the ball back he was gone. He did say, “man that was weak!” jokingly!
But I was able to rush over to Marshall near the bullpen area, snag his autograph. I could tell it was him because of his length and he was hugging someone from the stands that looked like his pap, so It was a success! Didn’t say much to him, but I wish I did.
Chanman25 - March 31, 2009
HE IS THE LAW!
Oooh…we need a picture of Sean Marshall’s body with Judge Dredd’s head.
drewishdrewid - March 31, 2009
Uh oh, one of the Angel radio guys is taking a break. Cue the outrage...
ballhawk - March 31, 2009
Could be worse
As happened in Fort Lauderdale over the weekend, when the announcers left.
Bill Potter - March 31, 2009
They should have let some fans call the game.
daver - March 31, 2009
That would have been fun.
Kind of like when they let little kids introduce the batter coming to the plate.
Bill Potter - March 31, 2009
Seeing Abreu at the plate reminds me
Did we ever settle the Free Agent Tracker Contest?
Bill Potter - March 31, 2009
Can't remember.
I don’t think so.
daver - March 31, 2009
Might be time to wrap that one up.
Check results here.
Bill Potter - March 31, 2009
Guys, I can't seem to get Gameday to work
Sorry to disturb your Gaudin v. Guzman arguments, but can anybody tell me the score? Thanks.
chilango2 - March 31, 2009
you need to spend the $ for MLB.TV so you can watch the games...
santoswoodenlegs - March 31, 2009
I meant just the Flash PxP thingy
It’s been weird since yesterday and it’s not opening today.
chilango2 - March 31, 2009
1-0 Angels, bottom of third.
ballhawk - March 31, 2009

shocking.
santoswoodenlegs - March 31, 2009
yes!
we are REALLY getting close to the season!
halfblindcubbiegirl - March 31, 2009
So maybe those Angels announcers were on to something
when they said the Cubs were a little lazy in their pregame baserunning.
Bill Potter - March 31, 2009
Yeah, really. Who's laughing now?
daver - March 31, 2009
He was just trying to make Dome feel better.
daver - March 31, 2009
Somewhere in Arizona...

ballhawk - March 31, 2009
It's because

gwood - March 31, 2009

Chanman25 - March 31, 2009
Torii Hunter.
Yeah, whatever.
daver - March 31, 2009
tell you what - I didn't need the radio guys to tell me that was smoked.
I loved hearing just the crack of the bat. Wish the announcers would take their time coming back from between innings all the time.
ballhawk - March 31, 2009
nothing in the world is quite like that sound
halfblindcubbiegirl - March 31, 2009

Yeah, this is turning into a meltdown.
3-0, runners at second and third. No outs.

I hope your being sarcastic. Reacting this way to a bad spring outing.
puckishcubsfan - March 31, 2009
Or...
Is he wearing an Orioles uniform?
14theofleury - March 31, 2009
he walked the bases loaded

santoswoodenlegs - March 31, 2009
One bad game
One bad game means he’s turning into Rich Hill. Right.
puckishcubsfan - March 31, 2009
remember its swl
he who is never serious.
halfblindcubbiegirl - March 31, 2009
Good point.
The difference between BCb and other sites is when we do this the regulars are being goofy. The other sites they are completely serious.
puckishcubsfan - March 31, 2009
Update anyone?
Inning, score, etc…
Jimmyeatworld - March 31, 2009
Top 4
no outs, bases loaded, 3 runs in. 3-0 Angels.
halfblindcubbiegirl - March 31, 2009
Thanks babe!
Jimmyeatworld - March 31, 2009
C'mon triple play!
halfblindcubbiegirl - March 31, 2009
3-0, top 4...sacks full and no outs
JCD - March 31, 2009
tisk tisk not a good inning for Sean here
but I’m not concerned..
Chanman25 - March 31, 2009
Marshall is just setting this Angels team up for the WS game 5 that he's going to start.
santoswoodenlegs - March 31, 2009
That's more likely
That’s more likely thn him becominganother Rich Hill.
puckishcubsfan - March 31, 2009
Why would he start game five?
Everyone else injured? Or are they going to play the World Series in consecutive days for once?
14theofleury - March 31, 2009
You think after Dempster walks another 6 in Game 1 Lou will let him start Game 5?
santoswoodenlegs - March 31, 2009
Or more likely
or more likely Dempster will have a good game 1 and Marshall will be in the pen for the series.
puckishcubsfan - March 31, 2009
think we walk 5 again and win?
only if we’re playing Dusty.
halfblindcubbiegirl - March 31, 2009
figgins single...5-0
JCD - March 31, 2009
Apparently the first out is the hardest to record
what on earth is up sean!
halfblindcubbiegirl - March 31, 2009
Gaudin could've have gotten out of this inning by now.
santoswoodenlegs - March 31, 2009
think guzman could've?
halfblindcubbiegirl - March 31, 2009
He'd have thrown his
favorite dumpster at the Angels by now.
gwood - March 31, 2009
I'm glad I'm not watching this.
At least he got an out.
Schwa - March 31, 2009
I've got the mlb.tv feed running now.
Sadly enough.
daver - March 31, 2009
6-0, 2nd and 3rd 1 out...Marshall out
JCD - March 31, 2009
Al informs me via Twitter that Patton is warming up.
daver - March 31, 2009
Obviously the Marshall Plan didn't work out as intended so The General has to come clean it up
ballhawk - March 31, 2009
Bad foreign policy forces military action.
Oh, sorry, no politics.
daver - March 31, 2009
just wait until we pick up Infante as a backup infielder
Then we could have General Omar Bradley on the field!
ballhawk - March 31, 2009
So anyone watching
could you tell what was up in that 4th inning? Marshall seemed to be doing okay in the early innings… was he missing by as much as gameday made it seem?
halfblindcubbiegirl - March 31, 2009
The problem was he wasn't missing.
They were hitting everything he threw up there.
Now Patton isn’t doing much better. Maybe the Angels are just hot today.
daver - March 31, 2009
Sucks
glad the game means nothing.
halfblindcubbiegirl - March 31, 2009
Soto must be mad at the pitching staff and telling the batters what's coming.
santoswoodenlegs - March 31, 2009
meh, not Marshall's finest outing at all
hopefully this isn’t a concern..
Chanman25 - March 31, 2009
It's his last start for a while
So he’ll have time to work the kinks out.
Bill Potter - March 31, 2009
yup
Chanman25 - March 31, 2009
"Vladdie Bloop"?
any relation to Betty Boop?
ballhawk - March 31, 2009
Crap, first day I'm trying to actually follow a full game...
and Gameday won’t come up on my computer, anybody got a feed for audio, or gameday like deal?
Jimmyeatworld - March 31, 2009
I think it's my processor...
too slow, but it should still get gameday I think.
Jimmyeatworld - March 31, 2009
don't know
gameday is running decently for me. its slow but thats b/c its ST.
what browser are you using?
halfblindcubbiegirl - March 31, 2009
Firefox or Safari...
I think it’s my flash player, I’m upgrading now…
Jimmyeatworld - March 31, 2009
hope that works
halfblindcubbiegirl - March 31, 2009
There's that General Patton curve ball. Very nice.
daver - March 31, 2009
my nickname is catching on :D
Chanman25 - March 31, 2009
The inning that would never end
yes it goes on and on my friend
some people started watching it not knowing what it was
and they’ll be watching it forever because!!!
halfblindcubbiegirl - March 31, 2009
Finally over.
Patton settled down pretty nicely. But let’s not put him on the team because, y’know, he’s never pitched above A ball and stuff.
daver - March 31, 2009
he's never been above single A?
For reals?
halfblindcubbiegirl - March 31, 2009
That's what I keep hearing.
daver - March 31, 2009
he probably never played second base either
does that mean he knows nothing about baseball?
halfblindcubbiegirl - March 31, 2009
And he’s 29 YEARS OLD! (poking fun at self here)
puckishcubsfan - March 31, 2009
The other day I was resting and watching TV and I couldn’t remember who was the third puppet after Lamb Chop and Hush Puppie. I actually got out of bed turned on my computer and googled it, I need help.
puckishcubsfan - March 31, 2009
thats just sad
how is your friend doing after his transplant? everything going okay?
halfblindcubbiegirl - March 31, 2009
Doing well
Doing well. Just talked to my brother who talked to him this morning.
He’s been best friends with my brother since our moms were hospital roommates when they were born.
They were each others best man and he’s Godfather to my brother’s oldest.
puckishcubsfan - March 31, 2009
Good to hear
:-)
halfblindcubbiegirl - March 31, 2009
Its Marshall!
anyone else want to join in strangling this Angels televsion guy? He called Sean Marshall Sean Gallagher about 20 times.
AzCubfan24 - March 31, 2009
The first time I thought I just misheard
but now I am ready to strangle him too
madeindetroit - March 31, 2009
Dome routine fly ball to left for the first out.
santoswoodenlegs - March 31, 2009
D. LEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
Two-bagger.
daver - March 31, 2009
Well I just keep thinking, only a few short more days
six days, just six days…
Chanman25 - March 31, 2009
I presume the lineup for opening day will go as followed:
Soriano LF
Fukudome CF
Lee 1b
Bradley RF
Ramirez 3B
Fontenot 2b
Soto C
Theriot SS
Zambrano P
Chanman25 - March 31, 2009
Affirmative.
daver - March 31, 2009
I could go for that
halfblindcubbiegirl - March 31, 2009
I would switch Fukudome and Fontenot
but I guess Fontenot has more power
Chanman25 - March 31, 2009
Dome needs to see fastballs!
Jimmyeatworld - March 31, 2009
I think Soto is more of a threat than Lee is
and I could very easily swap the two, but given the tenure Lee has…
Chanman25 - March 31, 2009
unless we're facing a lefty
Has Oswalt been announced as OD starter?
ballhawk - March 31, 2009
I mean its pretty much a given
though I could look it up
Chanman25 - March 31, 2009
Wandy and Hampton are listed as 2 and 3 in their rotation
both are lefties.
ballhawk - March 31, 2009
I'd expect to see Johnson in both of those games and Miles at 2b
Chanman25 - March 31, 2009
it'll be an early test to see if LBR really is the primary 2B or if it's a platoon
ballhawk - March 31, 2009
I hope he can establish himself as our starting 2b for atleast 3-4 seasons..
Chanman25 - March 31, 2009
me too...then when we trade him I can whine and cry about it.
santoswoodenlegs - March 31, 2009
hahaha
Chanman25 - March 31, 2009
and have some kind of elaborate breakdown
when he kills us in ST?
halfblindcubbiegirl - March 31, 2009
exactly, LBR is just not an everyday guy...
Jimmyeatworld - March 31, 2009
I think your missing the sarcasm or misread it
Chanman25 - March 31, 2009
missed the sarcasm...
messing with my settings, and I’m back for the first time in 6 months…
Jimmyeatworld - March 31, 2009
haha, well good to have ya back
Chanman25 - March 31, 2009
Hoffpauir FO9.
I was trying to log in to Flickr at the time.
daver - March 31, 2009
Rami gets the baby bears on the board!
woohoo!
halfblindcubbiegirl - March 31, 2009
Updating my flash player did the trick.
Jimmyeatworld - March 31, 2009
cool
good to know for the next time my gameday goes all wonky.
halfblindcubbiegirl - March 31, 2009
Bases juiced for Theriot.
daver - March 31, 2009
lets at least see a single here..
Chanman25 - March 31, 2009
time for a weak one to the right side...
Jimmyeatworld - March 31, 2009
Well, it would been better if it escaped the infield!
Jimmyeatworld - March 31, 2009
Give the guy a break....
the infield is like 100 feet deep!
santoswoodenlegs - March 31, 2009
HA LOL...
Jimmyeatworld - March 31, 2009
You called it.
daver - March 31, 2009
At least Patton doesn't have to come out
IowaCubs- - March 31, 2009
If he continues to pitch well, today may earn him a roster spot
Chanman25 - March 31, 2009
Who else is scheduled to pitch today?
Chanman25 - March 31, 2009
Gregg
IowaCubs- - March 31, 2009
Olsen?
ballhawk - March 31, 2009
Falls down after contact?
N Oakley - March 31, 2009
Vaughn?
santoswoodenlegs - March 31, 2009
I'm telling you, if MLB had half a brain...
…they’d offer another version of Gameday Audio with no announcers – just the sounds of the game and the PA guy.
Call it Gameday Old School.
ballhawk - March 31, 2009
i love that you get that in the commerical breaks
all the chatter and the PA voices and the warmup pitches. Its very nifty.
halfblindcubbiegirl - March 31, 2009
sadly....that would be over 3/8ths more than they currently have.
santoswoodenlegs - March 31, 2009
I'd go for that.
I once joked that XM Radio should have a “sounds of baseball” channel that just played ambient noise from a baseball game. The crowd, the vendors, the occasional crack of the bat. It would make nice background listening here at work.
daver - March 31, 2009
there was a cable company many years ago in North Carolina I think
that broadcasted a fish tank 24/7 on one of their surplus channels.
ballhawk - March 31, 2009
My cats would like that.
daver - March 31, 2009
dish network has the nasa channel
which seems to just be a fixed camera in space. its bizarre and i love space.
halfblindcubbiegirl - March 31, 2009
is the decaying spam website still up and running?
ballhawk - March 31, 2009
the what?
halfblindcubbiegirl - March 31, 2009
there used to be a website, or maybe a webcam would be more accurate
displaying nothing but a plate of SPAM. you know, the kind you eat. Well, maybe not you and certainly not me, but some people….
Anyway, it had been up for years, and its sole purpose seemed to be to show the natural decomposition of SPAM. And scary to say, it wasn’t decomposing very fast…
ballhawk - March 31, 2009
Never heard of that
halfblindcubbiegirl - March 31, 2009
keep that to yerself
You know the used car salesman will try to steal it… develop it yerself & make some cash!
Jimmyeatworld - March 31, 2009
yikes, Marshall's stats look putrid now
good thing this game didn’t come earlier..
Chanman25 - March 31, 2009
But he's younger than Zambrano.
santoswoodenlegs - March 31, 2009
and he's been above A ball!
halfblindcubbiegirl - March 31, 2009
but he's 29 years old
tim815 - March 31, 2009
Back in the clubhouse, Aaron Heilman punches a locker.
daver - March 31, 2009
at least its not a garbage dumpster..
Chanman25 - March 31, 2009
as long as its not a catcher
lord knows we’d never hear the end of that.
halfblindcubbiegirl - March 31, 2009
you know
Soto was only suppose to be a backup, what the hell did he think of trying to be good!?!!?
Chanman25 - March 31, 2009
daver, who was the guy that was always on the last two years
then moved to Santa Barbara & started doing minor league games?
Jimmyeatworld - March 31, 2009
Oh, um...northsider, I think?
daver - March 31, 2009
that's the guy,
where’s he been, haven’t seen him in a long time…
Jimmyeatworld - March 31, 2009
he's westsider now
ballhawk - March 31, 2009
good one.
Jimmyeatworld - March 31, 2009
he left bcb
halfblindcubbiegirl - March 31, 2009
why?
Jimmyeatworld - March 31, 2009
I can't find the comment
but he got tired of some of the stuff that went on here and split.
halfblindcubbiegirl - March 31, 2009
I guess he's too busy doing "real" baseball analysis...
…to hang with us peons.
daver - March 31, 2009
makes sense...
Jimmyeatworld - March 31, 2009
Ladies and gentlemen...GENERAL PATTON!
daver - March 31, 2009
Consider it done
No way he isnt making this team. No way.
AzCubfan24 - March 31, 2009
He's in like flynn.
daver - March 31, 2009
or flint
or flynt
or flynn robinson
tim815 - March 31, 2009
my best friend is albino
and i think she’s got more color on her face than his gameday picture.
wow is he pale!
halfblindcubbiegirl - March 31, 2009
heh, who would have thought Patton would have made the team at the beginning of spring training?
Chanman25 - March 31, 2009
I think he deserves a shot at this point
Hes been nothing short of great…especially compared to his competition
KButler - March 31, 2009
He kind of reminds me of
Les Lancaster. The way he’s staying with the team and all.
Sioux City Cubs Fan - March 31, 2009
not a bad comparison
tim815 - March 31, 2009
Speaking of Fully K, Al informs me that he's warming up.
daver - March 31, 2009
Holy Crap
Dome with a triple? Did that really just happen?
AzCubfan24 - March 31, 2009
Oh, it happened.
I guess the Iowa Cubs have a lot to look forward to.
daver - March 31, 2009
Not gonna happen daver...
Jimmyeatworld - March 31, 2009
I was too lazy to post sarcasm indicator...
…but I certainly hope not.
daver - March 31, 2009
I'm out of practice after being away and now living in paradise.
Jimmyeatworld - March 31, 2009
So you're the one Eddie Money gave his other ticket too...
ballhawk - March 31, 2009
You're in the jungle, baby!!!
daver - March 31, 2009
Yes, it did...
Jimmyeatworld - March 31, 2009
Lee with his 2nd double today.
santoswoodenlegs - March 31, 2009
santoswoodenlegs - March 31, 2009
What did Hoff do?
My computer froze up.
daver - March 31, 2009
so did he after being distracted by SWL's picture...
ballhawk - March 31, 2009
Hm, maybe photoshopped EA pics don't work.
daver - March 31, 2009
That's not shopped.
santoswoodenlegs - March 31, 2009
Seriously?
daver - March 31, 2009
Dude....
if was going to shop of pic of her with her mouth open and tongue out….don’t you think there would be something else in the pic to make the composition of the said picture a little more awesome that that one?
santoswoodenlegs - March 31, 2009
I must admit...
…I was surprised to not see a guy in a bunny suit or some sort of strange half repitillian/half mammalian woodland creature.
daver - March 31, 2009
evidently that pose...
tongue out and thumb, forefinger, and pinkie extended, is a popular one with the kids these days. Not sure what it means – perhaps someone here with teenage kids can do some research?
ballhawk - March 31, 2009
Well, whatever it is, it's highly inappropriate!
Harumph!
daver - March 31, 2009
get off my lawn!
halfblindcubbiegirl - March 31, 2009
It reads different when Daver says it.
N Oakley - March 31, 2009
weak grounder to 1B
halfblindcubbiegirl - March 31, 2009
she looks tasty!
Jimmyeatworld - March 31, 2009
grounded out weakly to the pitcher
Jimmyeatworld - March 31, 2009
gotta go charge the laptop battery, back later ya'll...
Jimmyeatworld - March 31, 2009
later jimmy
halfblindcubbiegirl - March 31, 2009
Now that's a shocking development.
daver - March 31, 2009
boy, I hope it's not terminal...
ballhawk - March 31, 2009
are you positive it's not?
santoswoodenlegs - March 31, 2009
maybe his node was all stuffed up...
ballhawk - March 31, 2009
Fully K works out of jam.
Middle 6, 8-3 Angels
daver - March 31, 2009
Make that 8-2.
daver - March 31, 2009
so.. what happened when patton came in again?
xene - March 31, 2009
Do the words "total pwnage" mean anything to you?
daver - March 31, 2009
yes, it means he struck out all three batters on 9 pitches
is that what happened?
xene - March 31, 2009
Mmmm, not exactly.
But he bailed out Sean Marshall, and then came back to pitch another scoreless inning.
daver - March 31, 2009
Bid deal...
Angel Guzman could have done that.
santoswoodenlegs - March 31, 2009
and guzman has been injured
and with the org for a decade
tim815 - March 31, 2009
ahhhh Then YOU need to better understand the concept of 'total pwnage' sir
xene - March 31, 2009
I think you have your Generals mixed up - it was MacArthur that came back...
ballhawk - March 31, 2009
Well, Patton hit the wounded soldier, so...
Patton broke the boom box?
N Oakley - March 31, 2009
but who
let the dogs out
tim815 - March 31, 2009
ironically, I must go study for a WWII test
later
Chanman25 - March 31, 2009
pssst - we won....
ballhawk - March 31, 2009
Spoiler alert: The Germans lose.
Later!
daver - March 31, 2009
just read this and commit it to memory...
and you’ll pass with flying colors.
santoswoodenlegs - March 31, 2009
That is pretty cool
chilango2 - March 31, 2009
That is perhaps the best history lesson ever.
Beaushek - March 31, 2009
Crappy laptop battery...
Need a new one for this old IBook! Now let’s get some runs.
Jimmyeatworld - March 31, 2009
theres even a baseball reference in there and everything!
xene - March 31, 2009
Always a baseball reference, always...
Jimmyeatworld - March 31, 2009
Rally time!
santoswoodenlegs - March 31, 2009
Let's get some runs!
Jimmyeatworld - March 31, 2009
It is spring training, but I would like to see a win...
Jimmyeatworld - March 31, 2009
That picture of Erin with her tongue out will haunt me until my dying day.
zevkalman - March 31, 2009
ahh... but what a way to go!
ballhawk - March 31, 2009
more haunting...
santoswoodenlegs - March 31, 2009
That's slightly on the creepy side.
Or did I say kinky?
zevkalman - March 31, 2009
That's ill...
Have you ever been to the Tiki? From what I understand it’s not far from Petco…
Jimmyeatworld - March 31, 2009
never been. I'm not too much into the club/concert scene
santoswoodenlegs - March 31, 2009
gotcha...
Me neither, it was just a lark that we happened into town when they were playing, and got to see some live music. When I was young I was into the concert scene, but not much anymore.
Jimmyeatworld - March 31, 2009
If BCB were of the catholic persuasion...
…your penance for posting that comes out to about 10 hail marys and at least 5 our fathers.
ballhawk - March 31, 2009
I guess I'll just have to live with the guilt instead.
santoswoodenlegs - March 31, 2009
Is the game over?
What’s the score?
chilango2 - March 31, 2009
Here comes the Hoff!
Let’s hope all the Hoff love can get us a long one…
Jimmyeatworld - March 31, 2009
Hoff HR
santoswoodenlegs - March 31, 2009
It was the Hoff love that did it!
Jimmyeatworld - March 31, 2009
here's a chance to rid yourself of all that guilt - howsabout a nice celebratory pic for the Hoff!
ballhawk - March 31, 2009
santoswoodenlegs - March 31, 2009
Ah, that's the Hoff I want to see!
Jimmyeatworld - March 31, 2009
all is forgiven. go in peace my son...
ballhawk - March 31, 2009
to love and to serve the Cubs!
Jimmyeatworld - March 31, 2009
I think it's safe to say the shields have sustained heavy damage...
ballhawk - March 31, 2009
This thread is so slow.........
Jimmyeatworld - March 31, 2009
I have no access to the game at all
so I’m just waiting on updates from any of you guys.
Plus, I have nothing of substance to contribute (no news there).
chilango2 - March 31, 2009
8 to 4 Angels
top of ninth
100yearitch - March 31, 2009
It's 8-4 Angels, one out, top of the 9th.
Jimmyeatworld - March 31, 2009
Thank you!
n/t
chilango2 - March 31, 2009
Two outs now...
The the Cubs come back to the plate…
Jimmyeatworld - March 31, 2009
Struck out the side
100yearitch - March 31, 2009
Time for a 9th inning rally...
Let’s get some runs!!!
Jimmyeatworld - March 31, 2009
Come on Theriot, let's get it started!
Jimmyeatworld - March 31, 2009
That's a wrap
100yearitch - March 31, 2009
Or, uh... Canzler?
Jimmyeatworld - March 31, 2009
down go the Cubs.
I guess it all starts with the “alert” base-running.
Let’s leave that crap in AZ
LAcarl519 - March 31, 2009
Later ya'll
Jimmyeatworld - March 31, 2009
