why doesn’t a manager use his closer everyday because he’s probably your best reliever? Even if you’re down 3 runs, he’s your best pitcher so you should just use him anyway. I mean he’ll get you outs because he’s your best pitcher right…
there’s no right or wrong answer to the question. but lou has to realize that in a season you can’t always rely on the same guy to get crucial outs. you need more pitchers
he DID save 4 runs since that’s how many would have scored had he not made that play. Now, if you count subsequent plays in the inning (even though they happened right after) his net save would probably be 2
This is why nobody understands this Gregg/Marmol discussion.
Marmol is too valuable (and too good) to be used in only 1-2-3 9th innings. He needs to be used in high leverage, game-changing situations. Not once we already have the lead, but when we need to maintain it or prevent scoring. That’s why Carlos is a better 7-8 inning weapon than a 9th inning one. The ESPN guys don’t get that. It’s not a controversy, and Lou even addressed this YESTERDAY in the post-game.
And though I dislike him like most people on this board, Steve hillips did say he understood that point. At the same time, Gregg presents a problem, no doubt about it.
And, from virtually every appearance I’ve seen from Gregg, yes, I have to agree. He is not good. At all. Let’s see what Heilman does in the coming weeks. I do feel he could serve as an 8th inning set-up to White Castle. But hey. It’s early.
Let's close the door on this one

cocknfire - April 12, 2009
come on lou
don’t bring in marmol. if he does thats 5 times in 6 games
lexmarklover - April 12, 2009
are you kidding?
these are the games Marmol belongs in.
Not the usualy “oh we’re up 30 we’ll bring in Marmol” stuff he did last year.
halfblindcubbiegirl - April 12, 2009
tell me that exactly same thing when he gets injured
lexmarklover - April 12, 2009
so you don't bring your best reliever in
because you’re afraid he’s going to get hurt?
when do you bring him in? Never?
halfblindcubbiegirl - April 12, 2009
hey question for you:
why doesn’t a manager use his closer everyday because he’s probably your best reliever? Even if you’re down 3 runs, he’s your best pitcher so you should just use him anyway. I mean he’ll get you outs because he’s your best pitcher right…
lexmarklover - April 12, 2009
Dude
We’re not down by three! We’re up by three! Yes, that’s when you use you best relievers.
How hard is that to understand?
cocknfire - April 12, 2009
why don't managers like to use their closer 4 or 5 games in a row
lexmarklover - April 12, 2009
Mostly because teams rarely win games by three runs or fewer 4 or 5 games in a row
cocknfire - April 12, 2009
no but answer me if they are winning games by three runs or fewer
why don’t they like to use their closer
lexmarklover - April 12, 2009
on multiple outings back to back
lexmarklover - April 12, 2009
we're not saying
throw marmol out there til his arm falls off
but these are teh games marmol belongs in.
halfblindcubbiegirl - April 12, 2009
whos to same other pitchers can't pitch in these situations
you can’t just use one guy over and over again and expect the same results. it just doesn’t happen that way
lexmarklover - April 12, 2009
and who would you rather have?
halfblindcubbiegirl - April 12, 2009
Vizcanio
he’s pitched once and pitched pretty damn well in that outing
lexmarklover - April 12, 2009
did you even see that inning?
vizcanio was awful and lucky.
halfblindcubbiegirl - April 12, 2009
r u watching the same game i'm watching
check his stats for me
lexmarklover - April 12, 2009
i'm done
you’re making no sense to me at all.
halfblindcubbiegirl - April 12, 2009
you're the one thats not making sense
you’re calling him “awful and lucky” when he got two outs and he faced two batters……….
lexmarklover - April 12, 2009
he put a bunch of pitches
right down the middle. He’ll get another shot, but not when there are other options.
bheidge - April 12, 2009
And if you trot out some other reliever, and he blows the game
Everybody says, “Why didn’t you bring in Marmol?”
And it’s a fair question
cocknfire - April 12, 2009
it's also a fair answer to say
that I dont want to burn him out so i decided to give him a day off
lexmarklover - April 12, 2009
Which is a real comfort if you finish a game out of the playoffs at the end of the year
cocknfire - April 12, 2009
yea its a real confort when you lose a game in september
and marmol isn’t effective
lexmarklover - April 12, 2009
Win the game now
Winning another game is why you pull Carlos Zambrano after 85 pitches so he’ll be rested for a game four that never happens.
cocknfire - April 12, 2009
you're making it seem that marmol is the only pitcher
that can get outs and thats just not right
lexmarklover - April 12, 2009
The General seemed to do ok the other day.
And Guzman.
drewishdrewid - April 12, 2009
Um, if we have other pitchers, we can use them
If/when Marmol is ineffective
cocknfire - April 12, 2009
i'm just saying right now
there’s no right or wrong answer to the question. but lou has to realize that in a season you can’t always rely on the same guy to get crucial outs. you need more pitchers
lexmarklover - April 12, 2009
I worried about him as much as anyone else in May/June
But that’s when you worry about overusing the guy, not in April
cocknfire - April 12, 2009
but we're up by 3
why is this so hard?
IF the score were reversed, I’d agree with you to save Marmol… but we’re not.
halfblindcubbiegirl - April 12, 2009
Remember... he's a kid
Emelie - April 12, 2009
so?
i’m not exactly ancient.
you can be a kid without complaing about your best pitcher being in a tight game.
halfblindcubbiegirl - April 12, 2009
true... but I'm thinking 10-12
Emelie - April 12, 2009
If he gets injured when the Cubs are up by five, fine
These are the games for which you have a slider-throwing monster as a setup man
cocknfire - April 12, 2009
Got to use the blankie as much as possible
nji232 - April 12, 2009
Snuggie?
dtpollitt - April 12, 2009
Is there another kind?
cocknfire - April 12, 2009
Thats probably a description of Marmol
He is Lou’s snuggie and he won’t let him go.
nji232 - April 12, 2009
Um, why would you NOT bring in your best setup guy with a 2-run lead?
cocknfire - April 12, 2009
that throw is lower and he's out
really close
halfblindcubbiegirl - April 12, 2009

they talk more about Fielder's response instead of Johnson's amazing catch
meh..
Chanman25 - April 12, 2009
it was cool being able to explain to my 11 year old what Fielder's gesture meant tho
davidalanu - April 12, 2009
well yes, but you don't rob a Grandslam everyday..
Chanman25 - April 12, 2009
Grr.
RJ did not save 4 runs. 1 still scored on the sac.
Clutch16 - April 12, 2009
and 1 other one
Zakh - April 12, 2009
Well technically
he DID save 4 runs since that’s how many would have scored had he not made that play. Now, if you count subsequent plays in the inning (even though they happened right after) his net save would probably be 2
Hilary Lee - April 12, 2009
technically 1 did score on that play
Zakh - April 12, 2009
well technically four would have scored without that catch
eh..
Chanman25 - April 12, 2009
but one did score on the sac fly
Fielder got 1 RBI but not 4
flachimesa - April 12, 2009
Reed wants to get a homer real bad
nji232 - April 12, 2009
well he technically got one today
he just caught it

VolPowers - April 12, 2009
This is why nobody understands this Gregg/Marmol discussion.
Marmol is too valuable (and too good) to be used in only 1-2-3 9th innings. He needs to be used in high leverage, game-changing situations. Not once we already have the lead, but when we need to maintain it or prevent scoring. That’s why Carlos is a better 7-8 inning weapon than a 9th inning one. The ESPN guys don’t get that. It’s not a controversy, and Lou even addressed this YESTERDAY in the post-game.
dtpollitt - April 12, 2009
I understand your argument, but removing HOPE from the opposition at the end of the game is a powerful thing
VolPowers - April 12, 2009
I agree.
And though I dislike him like most people on this board, Steve hillips did say he understood that point. At the same time, Gregg presents a problem, no doubt about it.
TheTruth11 - April 12, 2009
I'll tell you the problem
Kevin “Turtle from Entourage” Gregg sucks.
dtpollitt - April 12, 2009
You know, I never noticed that resemblance.
And, from virtually every appearance I’ve seen from Gregg, yes, I have to agree. He is not good. At all. Let’s see what Heilman does in the coming weeks. I do feel he could serve as an 8th inning set-up to White Castle. But hey. It’s early.
TheTruth11 - April 12, 2009
actually the ESPN guy just mentioned he’d be better for 7/8th men on situations
Cubsfanatic - April 12, 2009
that slider is nas-tee.

Gregg?
That solves everything
halfblindcubbiegirl - April 12, 2009
No
Gregg will be buried in a short memorial service.
Lou will be indicted for his murder, but acquitted by a jury full of Cubs fans
cocknfire - April 12, 2009

FloridaCubsFan - April 12, 2009
dude
this is the argument against gregg as closer – but i’m still in the camp that thinks marmol is just too good to pitch strictly in save situations
CubbyBlues - April 12, 2009
That is ridiculous. Your best pitcher, closes games. end of arguement.
Ron Trauma - April 12, 2009
then your best pitcher
is in high-stress can’t miss situations? You want Gregg in with no outs, runners at first and third?
drewishdrewid - April 12, 2009
i see both sides of the argument
but yeah, too bad marmol can’t just go three innings like catfish hunter used to do lol
