MILWAUKEE -- Just a little over a year ago, Reed Johnson made a diving, cap-bending, jaw-dropping catch in Washington. Ultimately, that didn't wind up being anything but highlight-reel fodder, since the Cubs lost that game.
But last night, Johnson literally stole a grand slam from Prince Fielder in the fifth inning by reaching over the wall into the Cubs' bullpen to snag Fielder's long drive. That saved three runs -- it wound up being a sacrifice fly -- and that was the difference in the Cubs' 8-5 win over the Brewers.
Johnson wouldn't have even been in the game had it not been for an injury to Milton Bradley, who pulled up with a groin injury at third base while running an inning earlier. Sitting in the loge level behind third base with some of our regular bleacher group, we all wondered whether Lou would move Kosuke Fukudome to RF and put Johnson, who had gone in to run for Bradley, in CF. Good thing he did what he did, because Fukudome probably doesn't make that catch. It appears that Fukudome's going to be a center fielder this year and that Johnson will play wherever he's needed.
Last night, man, did we need that catch. While the Cubs could have swept the series with a few breaks, they also had some other good play and breaks that won them the two games they did, and any time you can go on the road and win four of six, you'll certainly take it.
The rest of the game was a walk-fest; the Cubs drew ten of them and now have 29 walks in six games, averaging almost five per game. Four of those walks in the fourth inning scored runs -- that's the second time in the first week of the 2009 season that a team issued four bases-loaded walks in a single inning (the Braves did it vs. the Phillies in a 12-11 loss last Wednesday) and the Cubs were happy to take it, because apart from Alfonso Soriano hitting his second leadoff homer of 2009, the offense consisted of a pair of doubles by Ryan Theriot and Koyie Hill (whose name appears as "KOYLE HILL" on the Brewers scorecard), and singles by Fukudome and Theriot.
The catch bailed out Ryan Dempster, who said that he'd buy Johnson a "burger" on the way home (strange; Paul Sullivan in the Tribune said "burger" -- I'm guessing an editor had his way with that -- while the Sun-Times and cubs.com had no problem identifying Dempster's real quote as "Culver's"). Dempster had control problems himself, and didn't have his best stuff, but managed to slog through six innings, allowing four runs and striking out six. Corey Hart hit his second homer of the series, a solo job.
Another solo shot -- a long one into some OF seats that have TV monitors and easy chairs that the Brewers auction off every day -- was hit off Kevin Gregg in the 9th after he had retired the first two batters easily on ground balls; Rickie Weeks took him deep, and then after a Craig Counsell double and Ryan Braun walk, Fielder came up representing the tying run. Gregg, pitching in front of a small remnant of the original 40,168, by then mostly Cubs fans, struck him out. Is something wrong with Gregg? From Bruce Miles:
Cubs manager Lou Piniella is going to change how he uses Kevin Gregg. No, Carlos Marmol is not the closer despite finishing Saturday night's game and earning a save.
"Gregg is our closer; I said that last night," Piniella said Sunday. "Look, I found out an interesting piece of information on Gregg that I didn't know about. And that's that once I get him up and don't use him, his knee tightens up on him. So I can't get him up (when the Cubs are) down by 1 run and then all of a sudden I lose him for later on or he's not as effective later on.
"What you'll see, probably, from Gregg also, I won't use him at all in the eighth inning because he sits here. And then he goes out there and his knee's a little tighter in the ninth. I wasn't aware of that. It was communicated to me by the trainer and by Gregg yesterday."
So, apparently, the knee injury that bothered Gregg much of last year is still an issue? Did the Cubs know this when they traded for him? Is this another player the Cubs are going to have to baby?
Meanwhile, today's forecast doesn't look very good, although it gives a glimmer of hope:
Today: Rain, mainly before 1pm. High near 43. Breezy, with a east wind between 20 and 25 mph, with gusts as high as 35 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.
If the rain is really going to ease up after 1 pm, maybe they can get the game in. On the other hand, with the injury to Bradley, perhaps it's better, with the team getting in very late last night, to just call it off and play tomorrow. We'll know in a few hours.

Before everybody jumps on Bradley
he probably did the right thing by pulling up and not tweaking the “groin” even more.
BUT, thank goodness for Reed Johnson last night. What a catch!!
Cubs didn’t hit well last night because the Brewers would not throw the ball over the plate. I’ll take the walks. Good win. Keep winning series!
mrcubsfan - April 13, 2009
Yep - just win 2 out of 3
every series. That’s the key. a sweep would have beenb nice, but as Al said, we easily could have lost another game of 2.
Ihatethecards - April 13, 2009
Coming home 4-2 feels pretty good.
cubswynn - April 13, 2009
That's a good road trip
but we have to keep the hammer down at home. The Cardinals are coming in this weekend and so am I. Nice to win these April games so you don’t have to do it all in September. They all count the same. (That’s another Lou plus, I think he gets that point across to the players.)

April
The second part of that old saying Pennants Aren’t won in April is They can Be lost In April as well.

Take 2 series on the road vs division rivals. Feels real good!
SackMan - April 13, 2009
exactly
Cubbie-Tim - April 13, 2009
Agreed...
Part of being a good hitter is having a good eye.
Of course, very few of the 16 pitches that made up those four walks were even close.
What I loved about the walks is that Soriano and Fukudome took whacks at the pitches, fouled them off and then took walks. Usually, those guys get into “swing” mode and don’t leave it.
Worf - April 13, 2009
Walks
The main difference between these Cubs and our boys of the past is the fact that they will take a walk, take an extra base, hit behind the runner etc.
My stepfather used to say they’d never win until they did this. If you can watch baseball in heaven he’s smiling now. He also would be loving the Bears getting a Quarterback.
puckishcubsfan - April 13, 2009
Johnson's catch no doubt saved the day...
Not sure if a healthy Bradley could make that play… and pretty positive The Big Hoff wouldn’t have. But… the main take away from last night’s game: Kevin Gregg is still sucking.
Also… we’ve left a lot of runners in scoring position, but I’m not too worried about it. We keep getting on base at a an amazing clip. We’ll score a lot of runs.
SackMan - April 13, 2009
Also... Our bullpen MUST be addressed during the year...
Right now Marmol is the only one you can count on… and unless one of our other guys gets on a hot streak, I can’t envision anyone else being consistent. Marshall’s great too, but he’s going into the rotation.
At the deadline this year… if there’s a dominant set-up guy or closer being dangled out there, I’d love to see us add him to compliment Marmol. The 1-2 punch we had with Marmol and Woody was one of our keys to success last year.
SackMan - April 13, 2009
Marmol=lightsout
but I say give the rest of the bullpen some time. We’ve played for one week and some guys have only been up once. As far as Gregg goes, he had better shape up by May 1 or he will get booed out of Chicago and will never be allowed to pitch “comfortably” in Wrigley (aka LaTroy). It hurts to see Woody had 3 K’s last night. Keep your fingers crossed this all works out.
mrcubsfan - April 13, 2009
Who is this "Woody" you speak of?
I’m concerned with CUBS, not former Cubs.
Worf - April 13, 2009
Yesterday Wood struck out the side in the 9th

Doggie Stalker - April 13, 2009
Over-under on when blisters develop?
June 6?
Worf - April 13, 2009
Over-under on how many more walks Gregg has than Wood?
30.
Al Yellon - April 13, 2009
Bingo!
Fraggin Judge - April 13, 2009
Wood's 2008 was pretty fantastic, blisters or no.
D98 - April 13, 2009
If the Indians tank this year... maybe we can get him back:)
And have them pay a portion of his deal:)
SackMan - April 13, 2009
I say
that when the indians are out of it in July, we contract out to bring Woody back for the rest of the season.
drewishdrewid - April 13, 2009
Patton
and Guzman are both pretty good. Cotts is Cotts. Heilman has been a pleasant surprise. Really, it’s only Vizcanio (sp?) that’s awful.
drewishdrewid - April 13, 2009
If the game gets called off....
….when would they make the announcement? Would it be announced on cubs.com?
cubswynn - April 13, 2009
Yes.
If they do call it, let them do it soon, rather than make all the players, fans, employees, etc. go sit in the cold, and THEN call it off.
Al Yellon - April 13, 2009
I'm waiting patiently.
If it does get called, I’d like to know soon so I can go into work today and take tomorrow off.
The problem is, tomorrow doesn’t look great either.
cubswynn - April 13, 2009
I hope they call it this morning
We live in Champaign and are planning on driving up, but don’t want to just go sit and wait for a game to get called.
cubbieblue86 - April 13, 2009
Hope Things Work Out
The longest trip I have ever made getting a game rained out on me was a 160-mile round trip from Memphis to Jackson, TN and back. That was for a AA game. I know it’s got to be about a 280-mile round trip for you from Champaign to Chicago and back. I hope you do see the Cubs play live in person today.
memphiscub - April 13, 2009
I drove
from Nashville TN to Chicago to see a game in 2003 that got called because of rain. Turned around and drove back. 8 hours and around 500 miles one way. That was a depressing ride home…
Archie - April 13, 2009
Ouch!
I figure you couldn’t get more time off work or didn’t have the money to see any more than the one scheduled game that got rained out. That is a depressing story. I’ll be in Nashville in June to see the Iowa Cubs play a game before going down to Atlanta to see the Chicago Cubs play. I hope the rain stays away from Music City on June 2.
memphiscub - April 13, 2009
None of the above, really.
4 kids at home that were 5 and under at the time. Really all of the time I could take was one day. Was really stretching it to even do that at the time. Abandoning my wife for longer…bad idea.

puckishcubsfan - April 13, 2009
Kinda like how Fielder tipped his helmet
But then Johnson gets plunked… probaby intentionally.
daeviant - April 13, 2009
Hard to tell...
Julio was so damn wild to begin with, that if someone told him to actually hit Johnson, he may have thrown 3 feet over his head. Brewers pitching sucked last night. Ugh.
SackMan - April 13, 2009
That was lame.
And Julio did get warned.
Al Yellon - April 13, 2009
Things like that are classless
mrcubsfan - April 13, 2009
That's one part of baseball I despise
When a player does something good at the plate or in the field, he gets plunked.
By that same logic, hitters should be allowed to charge the mound when the pitcher breaks off a nasty two-strike curve or freezes the hitter with a changeup.
Worf - April 13, 2009
Highly doubt that that was intentional.
lemon20pie - April 13, 2009
Sometimes it's hard to tell the difference
betwee retalliation and crappy pitching. I think it was the case last season with Eric Gagne.
daeviant - April 13, 2009
I agree
I don’ t think Julio would intentionally hit Reed to bring up Ramirez
gwood - April 13, 2009
You're assuming Julio thinks logically.
I don’t think his brain is capable of thinking that way. He’s so stupid he probably hit Johnson intentionally, not knowing who he would have to face later.
Fraggin Judge - April 13, 2009
I doubt it as well
I’ve never seen a guy thrown at for making a good defensive play.
John916 - April 13, 2009
man on first and two runs down............
highly unlikely
Clutche - April 13, 2009
Agreed on Fielder...
It’s pretty rare to see a player commend an opposing player for great defensive play – especially when being robbed of a grand slam. It is refreshing to see that kind of sportsmanship.

It would be gutless to peg someone who made a good play. It’s not like he ran through a Brewers player or went deep. He just made an amazing play and the Brewers pitching was wild.

Until Wednesday.

I had heard Cutler or the Blackhawks head coach would throw out the first pitch. Last year Blagojevich threw his wife out of the ballpark because he misheard the usher who asked him to throw out the first pitch.

Technically, the great catch only wound up saving two runs...
It saved three at the time of the catch, but two of the runners on base at the time of the play wound up scoring anyway. One scored on that play, the other went to third on the play and scored on a ground out by the next batter.
But it was a monumentally important play nonetheless. It kept a comfortable lead in our hands (6-4 after that inning), and the Brewers only sort of threatened from then on. Had it been 6-6 at that point, who knows what happens from there?
SouthernCub - April 13, 2009
or, if demp is shaken by the blast,
and the brewers score nine in the inning, it saved 7.
we have no idea how many it saved.
tim815 - April 13, 2009
Yes, two of the runners scored.
But it was also an out. If it’s a grand slam, not only do all the runs score, but there’s no out recorded and who knows what would have happened? Dempster might have had to be yanked early.
Al Yellon - April 13, 2009
Agreed....
Which I why I said it was a monumentally important play. In the scorebook, it technically wound up saving only two runs, but was an enormous swing in momentum and in situation. One out with a 3-run lead and runners on the corners is much different than no outs and a tie ballgame, especially when the tie came on a grand slam.
SouthernCub - April 13, 2009
Stopped the momentum.
My heart was down near my shoes when he made contact and then flung back up when I saw the catch. We were in the bleachers oppo the play, so we had a great view of that catch.

The debate was over the *suprise" 101 years without a World Series championship. Cubs fan said the Brewers have never won one. The Brewers fan said that the Milwaukee Braves championship in the 50s counts (No). That went on with the Brewers fan kept on bragging about how they got to see a Game 4 in the playoffs.
Personally, our fan bases arguing about championships is setting our country back generations.

I went to a game at Miller last season
I had a pretty good experience. Most people were drunk, but I got into some harmless banter with some Brewers fans in front of me. Then I watched them fight amongst themselves because one of them was a Bears fan and the others were Packers fans.
daeviant - April 13, 2009
i saw a cubs fan get kicked out
in my section last night (203) because he threw back hart’s ball after he threw it up there before the start of the inning. it actually happened twice in our section – the first time it made sense because it was the inning after hart’s HR.. but the second time it was more delayed i think. i mean i get it at wrigley but the brewers fans/staff are NOT going to appreciate it at miller park.
there were a lot of cubs v. brewers fans arguing and such after the game (brewers fans apparently don’t appreciate 500 renditions of “go cubs go”) – i wouldn’t be surprised if there weren’t a handful of fights. still can’t rival soccer in south america…
worst thing about that section last night was that I couldn’t see Johnson’s catch… oh well..

tim815 - April 13, 2009
Why is Pat out that inning?
I can never figure out why he takes an inning off. Is there a medical reason? My wife thinks he must be a diabetic and that’s when he gets his insulin.
danimal15 - April 13, 2009
Nope.
Just takes a break. It’s very common for baseball PBP announcers, since there are no major breaks like halftimes or intermissions (between innings is only 90 seconds…)
PurpleLineToWrigley - April 13, 2009
On radio, I should say...
PurpleLineToWrigley - April 13, 2009
I hate to be cynical
but I wonder if the Cubs have set the bar so low for MB that he’ll be pulling up with these kind of minor injuries all the time.
That is, the Cubs said (stupidly, in my opinion) that they only hope MB plays 130 games this year. Every 15-20 games, he’s going to know that no one will be shocked if he “injures” himself and needs a couple games off.
And the bullpen- yeesh. Gregg has got to get it together. A 92mph fastball ain’t gettin it done.
SouthsideCub - April 13, 2009
Or rather
perhaps the Cubs themselves are just wanting to be extra careful. It doesn’t matter so much how many games MB plays in the regular season if he’s fully healthy in October.
DGU - April 13, 2009

No way does anyone with any competitive whatsoever think,
“Gee, I can take the rest of this game off — management won’t realize I’m not really hurt.”
Shanghai Badger - April 13, 2009
Quite a game last night Al.
My wife and I drove in from Michigan to Chicago yesterday afternoon with plans to attend today’s OD. About an hour out of our hometown, we were commiserating about the lousy weather forecast when we hit on an idea. We’d check into the hotel and then drive another 90 minutes to see the game in Milwaukee as a hedge against a cancellation today.
We were sitting in section 122 (sounds like right below you) and when Prince hit his bomb in the 5th, we KNEW it was gone. It had that sound. What a catch by Reed. We HAVE to get him in the regular line-up, not just in a platoon role. He plays full tilt every game I see and the Cubs play better overall and with more energy when he’s in the line-up.
BTW, that was our first trip to Miller Park. Very nice park, and the staff and fans we encountered were all pleasant and great to meet. We sat with a lot of Cubs fans, but directly behind an elderly couple of Brewers fans. These folks were a joy to talk to and somewhat prophetic. The gentleman said Suppan wouldn’t make it out of the 4th inning. He was dead on.
Last note: Brewers fans- the wave is dead. It sucked then. It sucks now. Stop doing it. It’s amateur hour.
Zeke - April 13, 2009
I'm going to paraphrase Bill Simmons here...
When he made his trip to the Brewers’ game.
Basically he said he was against the wave in general, but for Brewers fans, he made an exception because he figured it was the only cardio they would get that week.
Worf - April 13, 2009
Now, now. Be nice. The fans we met were all (well MOST of them) very nice.
Zeke - April 13, 2009
My first trip to Miller too.
Pretty freaking nice. A little too gimmicky for me, but you gotta pay for the stadium some how. They really cater to families, with all the free games for kids to do. It’s also nice that you can access the entire ballpark no matter where your tickets are at.
cubswynn - April 13, 2009
We liked that they offered multiple family seating (no alcohol) sections in various levels of the park.
Nice touch. We enjoyed our MGDs last night, but it was nice there were good seating sections for those who prefer NOT to…

strike out once every 3 at bats and allow more runs than he contributes to on his terrible d.
At least you admit to hoping Lee gets hurt. What a disgusting person you are.
And it’s 6 games too!
God the Micah Hoffpauir lovefest aka the Derrek Lee hate fest is ridiculous.
What did Lee do to you to wish ill on him?
puckishcubsfan - April 13, 2009
So, this is what it's come to...
Wishing for our own guys to be hurt.
That is a disgusting, vile sentiment and any Cubs fan should be ashamed to think it, much less communicate it.
Worf - April 13, 2009
Clutche
Cluthche is not a Cubs fan. No Cubs fan wishes ill on one of the players.
And how dumb any fan is to say after 6 games bench Lee in favor of someone who strikes out every 3 at bats and plays worse defense than a 3 day old puppy.
puckishcubsfan - April 13, 2009
I don't care if Hoff

What is really dumb
Is if Hoffpauir manages to get a hit in a game he subs in for Lee the silly people will be here demanding he play every day.
puckishcubsfan - April 13, 2009
But I think it's equally silly to suggest...
…that you KNOW Hoffpauir can’t do a good job at first full time. No one does because Hoff has never had the chance to prove himself. If anything, the evidence (small sample size from last year) suggest he’d be a pretty good replacement.
Now don’t get me wrong, I prefer to have DLee there. I’m just saying you can’t call someone silly for using that logic and then go do the same.
cubswynn - April 13, 2009
Maybe I can't call them silly
But I can call them vile and disgusting for wishing someone gets an injury.
Clutche has forfeited the right to be anything but a subject of derision and ridicule now. Think long and hard before you hitch yourself to his wagon.

I'd like to see Sori at #3.
DGU - April 13, 2009
so would I

Dome
Theriot
Sori
Bradley
Ramirez
Lee

Fonte????
lemon20pie - April 13, 2009
I think that's the catch.
I don’t think the Cubs believe they have any other viable lead-off men.
DGU - April 13, 2009
I'd rather see Fonte hit second than Theriot.
Archie - April 13, 2009
Against righties
I’d put Fontenot 2nd .
lemon20pie - April 13, 2009
I think Lee should move down even further than that
But Bradley should be ahead of Ramirez with his OBP so high.
GoCubbies34 - April 13, 2009
Every player goes on bad stretches for weeks at a time.
We know nothing more about Derrek Lee’s hitting today than we did in December.
DGU - April 13, 2009
He hasn't been productive in quite some time
He had a great start to last season, but other than that his season was pretty mediocre, and has been since his career year of 2005.
GoCubbies34 - April 13, 2009
This is just not true.
Lee had a rough season last year, excepting the beginning of the season, August, and the brief post-season. Players have off years. To suggest, however, that Lee has been “mediocre” since his career year is just made up. Since 2005, he’s had OPS+s of 112, 131, and 110, which is right in line with his whole career.
Let me remind everyone how Manny Ramirez was declared “In Decline” all last year, until he was traded to the Dodgers. Lee has talent and at some point in this season, his talent will be awakened.
DGU - April 13, 2009
2008 was skewed because of his hot start
And in 2008/2007 he hit below his norm in HR and RBI’s. 2006 he was hurt, so he didn’t produce that year. But he hit into career highs for GiDP’s in ’08 and ’07, and was in route to that in ’06 with 11 in 50 games.
Am I saying he shouldn’t be on the team? No. He is a great defensive asset. But he is not producing in the 3-hole, and that is my point.
GoCubbies34 - April 13, 2009
It's long overdue.
I guess that Lee has given so much to the organization and so on…. but it’s been a full year since he was any kind of threat whatsoever.
D98 - April 13, 2009
If we could move The Great...
Sammy Sosa down in the order during his decline, there is no reason why Lee should be exempt.
CubsBullsBears - April 13, 2009
He has clearly lost bat speed
It was really obvious when he hit the sac fly to right field last night. That was a ball that he would have put in the center field bleachers in the past.
I’d like to see Lee move a little closer to the plate and use a smaller bat. Pitchers know they can bust him in and then throw sliders away because he can’t turn on the ball anymore and he stands too far away from the plate to hit the away pitch with any authority.
If he would move in and swing a lighter bat, I bet he’d be able to really turn on the inside pitches. As it is, he’s just going to get older and slower and, to me, the decline phase looks like it’s going to get pretty ugly in the future.
dr stabbingworth - April 13, 2009
That's a really good point.
If D-Lee is going to be a line drive singles hitter, he should take a cue from the great Tony Gwynn, who used the smallest and lightest bat I’ve ever seen an MLB player use.
I’m not saying Lee should move down to a 30-in bat like Gwynn, but maybe its time to embrace the lack of power and become the spray hitter he can (maybe) still be.
D98 - April 14, 2009
Even Joe Morgan
Was suggesting that last night.
salparadise23 - April 13, 2009
Which means
Which means we should keep Lee batting 3rd til he dies. Even when he is 100 years old he should be on the Cubs batting 3rd.
puckishcubsfan - April 13, 2009
Nevermind then...
Jk.
CubsBullsBears - April 13, 2009
Were there any bets on how many games it would take for Bradley to get injured?
BTW, who’ll have more? Will Gregg have more walks than Wood K’s this year?
Fraggin Judge - April 13, 2009
Regarding the Bullpen
I’d actually say that Heilman has been pretty serviceable for his role. Marmol has been sick for sure. I’m not really sure what purpose Vizcaino will serve; he seems to be little-used, his stuff appears very hittable and I don’t know if he is long for this pen.
On Derek Lee, yikes. Forget the stats. He just looks like he is taking every strike (good pitch to hit) and swinging at junk. It is early and things could change but right now he’s pounding a lot of balls into the ground.
BeltwayCubsFan - April 13, 2009
Pretty apparent that Lou has little faith in Vizcaino
BLou - April 13, 2009
rightly so
I think he is the worst pitcher in the pen. Once Shark gets hot in the Minors, Vizcaino will be the first one on the chopping block. This guy has nothing.
lemon20pie - April 13, 2009
It may take till midseason, but...
… I agree. At some point they’ll just eat the rest of the contract.
Al Yellon - April 13, 2009
Which makes me more upset about the Gaudin release
Even if both of them were likely to end up off the roster by midseason, it would have been nice to take a chance that the young cheaper guy would have bounced back rather than the old expensive guy continuing to pitch to form.
madcow256 - April 13, 2009
Observations
1. Can’t argue with 4-2. Good start.
2. Milton Bradley is going to prove an outstanding addition. Those naysayers don’t understand that Bradley is the best pure hitter on the Cubs. I can live with his tweaks and groans so long as he can deliver the way he can deliver.
3. Time to put an end to the Ryan Theriot bashing. Theriot continues to be a distinct asset on this ballclub and unselfishly performs for this team. He is the best Cub at executing in game situations. And his defense is decent enough.
4. Reed Johnson is a great complementary ballplayer. And the type of player you find on teams who win. Now if only he can actually play during the post-season.
5. The bullpen is the achilles heel just like so many of us predicted it would be. It is flat out not going to be good enough. My early recommendation would be to switch Marshall back to the bullpen and put Heilman in the rotation. Marshall is needed in that pen big-time and working out of the pen is a more valuable contribution he can provide this team. Vizcaino, Guzman and Cotts suck. Patton needs to be at Double A ball and probably will be by April 30th. Carlos Marmol is going to top the 90 appearance mark by September 1st given the dubious current condition of this pen. And no, the early returns on Kevin Gregg are not good.
6. Derrek Lee has become a liability in the lineup. Please Lou move him down to 6th or 7th so he can get adjusted to a new role and the Cub lineup can gel in a way that can work an entire season.
BLou - April 13, 2009
Bradley could be the best pure hitter
of both leagues and it won’t mean a thing unless he’s actually in the game and at the plate.
Emelie - April 13, 2009
We get 120 games out of Bradley and he is there for the postseason is all that matters
There is the depth to weather him being out of the lineup from time to time.

Emelie - April 13, 2009
As usual, you wildly misstate people's feelings...
I’d say very few (if any) people actually want Bradley to fail or go on the DL. And I think the vast majority of people don’t believe Bradley will fail so long as he stays healthy. People are just very wary of Bradley’s tendency to find the DL.
But I guess in your eyes, considering the possibility that Bradley may break down equates to being a hater.
I certainly hope he repeats his 2008 success and is available for the postseason. But I’m not foolish enough to ignore the very real possibility that he won’t stay healthy enough to do so.
SouthernCub - April 13, 2009
I agree with all of this...
Except for Patton. I like his stuff; he throws strikes and has a good presence on the mound.
CubsBullsBears - April 13, 2009
Cubs are not going to use Patton accept in blowout situations
It is clear already that Lou and Rothschild are going to be very careful and selective on how they use Patton. This bullpen sucks and therefore the option of babying Patton doesn’t exist in my view. Either he is able to pull his weight or he needs to be shipped down or handed back to Colorado. We are trying to win a World Series here.
BLou - April 13, 2009
The only way to find out...
If he can pitch in meaningful situations is to put him in there. I have just as much confidence in him right now to get outs as I do a Neil Cotts or Vizcaino.

Might as well see what he can do. The bullpen sucks. They need to see if Patton can hack it. If not, he’s just roster filler, and they have a lot of that. Marmol can’t pitch every game.

Patton would have done a better job than Gregg last night.

how, precisely, is Patton NOT pulling his weight? You do realize that he doesn’t decide when he goes into the game and when he doesn’t, right?

drewishdrewid - April 13, 2009
Good teams seem to find a way to nurture developing talent while winning
We are a good team with solid depth. The bullpen has had acceptable results so far (someone quoted above – 6th in the league). Doesn’t this seem like a good time to try and groom a team into learning their roles over the course of the season?
In years past we seem to have strained certain players and left them with less than a full tank for the postseason. This team seems capable of winning the division by more than a few games. Perhaps it would be better to risk a few of those W’s trying to test the mettle of some of our younger guys? The best regular season record doesn’t win us anything in the postseason, and continually having to pay free agents or in trades only hurts our system in the long run.
madcow256 - April 13, 2009
Yep
1. 4-2 on the road no less.
2. By the end of the season there won’t be many Milton Bradley nay-sayers.
3. The on-field Theriot bashing is suspended, not ended, and available for rainy day exemptions.
4. Reed Johnson is a fun player to have on the team. HBP and flashy glovework in one game = the RJ Experience.
5. Jury’s still out on the ‘pen, although Lou’s frustration with the walks was utterly predictable and I still don’t get why Hendry didn’t consider that when building this ’pen.
6. Derrek Lee is the new Alfonso Soriano.
DGU - April 13, 2009
This is NOT a sentimental comment.
The Cubs are going to really miss Kerry Wood this year.
Al Yellon - April 13, 2009
I have hope for this 'pen.
If you look around the MLs, a lot of top-name relievers have had rough first weeks. Let’s give these guys a month and see how things shake out.
Plus, if worst comes to worst, If the pundits are right, we should be able to take on high-salaried but effective relievers as the season goes on. Take Kerry Wood’s 10 M and maybe you can put it to some combo of:
3.75 M Scott Downs
4.25 M Brandon Lyon
4.5 M Huston Street
5.6 M Bobby Jenks
6 M Octavio Dotel
8 M Jose Valverde
DGU - April 13, 2009
Valverde?
Mr. OCD Idiosyncrasy himself?
I don’t know if I could do it.
drewishdrewid - April 13, 2009
Valverde is one of my least favorite players;
he does make the point, though, that there are a lot of high-priced relievers on teams that could be ready to sell them come mid-season.
DGU - April 13, 2009
Patton
has been pitching better than Gregg. It makes NO SENSE TO MOVE HIM BACK TO AA BALL — especially when we’d lose him. Sheesh.
Time to put an end to the Ryan Theriot bashing. Theriot continues to be a distinct asset on this ballclub and unselfishly performs for this team. He is the best Cub at executing in game situations. And his defense is decent enough.
Are you not watching the games?
drewishdrewid - April 13, 2009
What do you mean by "unselfishly performs?"
How is maximizing your skillset unselfish? I agree that Theriot has been fantastic offensively this year (that really can’t be debated by any measure right now). But what is unselfish about hitting over .500? What is unselfish about getting to play your preferred position (he’s been a shortstop since high school)?
SouthernCub - April 13, 2009
While I'm suspending my on-field bashing of Theriot,
you are right that to call him on the “unselfish” label. Calling Theriot “unselfis” totally ignores his whole off-field transparent persona. Theriot knows how to please his managers and how to appear “unselfish,” but there is no player on the team who goes farther to protect his individual image.
DGU - April 13, 2009
Explain?
Can you give some further background on what you mean by your last comment there about Theriot “go[ing] further to protect his individual image?” My impression was that he sticks up for himself in the face of people who say he sucks.
But to what else are you referring? (This is not a pointed question, btw. I’m actually asking).
[For the record, I’m actually one of the people who likes Theriot, even if I do see some of his limitations]
CubsWin!Oregon - April 13, 2009
I like Theriot in every way
except his defense. I saw him get to a ball yesterday I didnt expect him to get to, which is good, but his arm is just not very strong. I also saw on ESPN’s top 10 plays this morning Orlando Cabrera and made me wish the Cubs would have made a play for him. That guy has a rocket for an arm.

Kudos to Joe Morgan for putting that ass clown Steve Phillips in his spot
Personally, I loved how Joe Morgan went right at Steve Phillips in the discussion of where Alfonso Soriano should bat in the lineup. I cannot stand that smug front office flunkie Phillips. Why ESPN finds him appealing is beyond me.

And every time he interjects the word “our team” or “our players” I want to shove my fist down my throat and puke.
BLou - April 13, 2009

Hawk
Still, Hawk had one of the funniest moments in broadcast history about 17 years ago when “Stump” Merrill was the Yankees manager.
Tom: “Say Hawk, why do they call him Stump?”
Hawk: “I don’t know, Wimpy. I don’t shower with the man!”
danimal15 - April 13, 2009
Actually, Phillips was right on that one.
Soriano was productive with Texas hitting 4th and 5th. The real problem is that the Cubs don’t have a legitimate lead-off man. Morgan kept arguing that Soriano is more comfortable hitting 1st in the lineup. Fine. But that is a different point than the one Phillips was making, which is that Soriano would be more productive and thus more valuable, hitting down in the lineup.
Fraggin Judge - April 13, 2009
But if he's more comfortable hitting leadoff
Then he hits more.
The real problem is Soriano’s streakiness. When he’s on, he looks better than anyone except Rickey Henderson. When he’s off, you want him hitting 8th, or traded.
In short, he’s just like every other player.
Worf - April 13, 2009
Not necessarily.
He can be productive in any spot regardless of what he prefers. It’s what the team needs that’s important, and right now, he’s the only thing close to a lead-off hitter that the Cubs have, unfortunately.
Fraggin Judge - April 13, 2009
Limited numbers disclaimer
But Soriano’s numbers are a decent amount better in the lead-off role.
dr stabbingworth - April 13, 2009
Only because he's done it more often, as you point out.
His OBP doesn’t compare to other lead-off hitters. However, if his legs are healthy, Soriano is a potent weapon leading off. He could hit for power and steal bases as well.
Fraggin Judge - April 13, 2009
Micah Hoffpauir
Why is there such a lovefest for this guy?
Carlos Zambrano had better offensive numbers than him last year.
puckishcubsfan - April 13, 2009
And is probably better defensively...
Did you see that tumble roll throw to first?
CubsBullsBears - April 13, 2009
Zambrano
I think if he played every day he’d put up better numbers than Hoffpauir playing every day.
Not only has he shown as much ability to hit but if he were able to put more work into his hitting he’d be even better.
And I think there is no doubt that if Hoffpauir was traded to where he played every day at the end of the year Lee’s numbers would be better.
puckishcubsfan - April 13, 2009
Panicking
Thank God the Cubs were 4-2 during this trip. We have enough panicking and overreacting as it is. If they were 3-3 or 2-4 people would be flinging themselves from the Sears Tower.
puckishcubsfan - April 13, 2009
And I'd miss them sooooooooooooooooooo much

I’m not as invested as I was last year.
I was wrong. Sheesh.

Gregg
I share Al’s concern that Gregg may be another pitcher the Cubs have to baby. The guy can only pitch one inning at a time? This is a major league athlete? Let’s hope his knee gets better soon, so he can be of more use. It’s very helpful to have a closer who can retire 4 or 5 batters once in a while.
danimal15 - April 13, 2009
Or even 3 in a row sometimes.
Al Yellon - April 13, 2009
Right!
Three in a row would be good for any Cub pitcher now – starter or reliever. Don’t think I’ve seen it yet this year.

Dempster in the second, Marshall in 7th, and Marmol in the 8th.

Jury duty on opening day :(
Hey guys I’m sitting down in the basement at the Tulsa county courthouse since I was picked for jury duty on opening day. Thankfully I have an iPhone and I will be able to follow the game with gameday or fight some people to watch it on the single tv down here. Don’t worry though I have my soto jersey on :) Go Cubs Go!!!
KC in OK - April 13, 2009
Haha
I’ve been in that same basement my friend. It would advise you to refrain from fighting in that particular venue, however.
Tate491 - April 13, 2009
Man I hope if I ever am being judged by my peers
I see a guy sitting in the jurors box with a soto jersey on. I would know who to ask for updates during the case
heine41 - April 13, 2009
Cardinals Fans in Tulsa Beware...
you may be judged by a Cubs fan.
memphiscub - April 13, 2009
On the other hand...
You’d probably hope that your jury isn’t engrossed in their IPhones instead of paying attention to your case…
:)

CGs
As a complete game fan (who wishes Cub pitchers could post a few to relieve pressure on this shaky bullpen), it’s worth noting that there were three CGs pitched yesterday. According to ESPN, this is the first time three CGs were pitched on one day in the opening week of a season since April 6, 1994.
danimal15 - April 13, 2009
GOTTA AGREE AL.....
When the smoke has cleared and if the bullpen stays this way… It has to make you wonder how they let Wood get away…Blister or no blister……

there's no wondering
It was about money.

I'm having a hard time deciding on when to leave for Wrigley.
Damn this rain.
Any opening day vet’s have any suggestions? Will they still do opening day ceremonies if it’s crappy out?

heine41 - April 13, 2009
Depends on where you're at
lemon20pie - April 13, 2009
Hilarity. At Wrigley, lol
heine41 - April 13, 2009
is it correct to end a sentence with a preposition?
Clutche - April 13, 2009
omg lemonpie
actually made me laugh.
Madison Cub Fan - April 13, 2009
Looking good
Sunny, high of 58. I say today gets postponed with either playing it tomorrow or DH on Wednesday.
tony412 - April 13, 2009
they won't do a DH.
drewishdrewid - April 13, 2009
DH....oh man...im not going there just yet
How would does that work if you have tickets for Game 2?
heine41 - April 13, 2009
Excuse the poorly constructed sentence
heine41 - April 13, 2009
in theory
the second game would be delayed, and all 1st game ticket holders would have to leave before 2nd game ticket holders were allowed in.
drewishdrewid - April 13, 2009
sadly, you're probably correct
Clutche - April 13, 2009

Pinch run and Hit in same inning
OK…we’ve all heard how rare it is to have 4 bases-loaded walks in the same inning. But something else happened in last night’s CUBS 4th: Reed Johnson came in to pinch run, AND THEN BATTED IN THE SAME INNING!
Can someone tell me how often does THAT happen????
Scorecard Man - April 13, 2009
Still some alarming things about this team IMO
Kevin Gregg is obviously going to give us heart pains every time he pitches in a close game. I know he eventually got the final out last night, but man does he make me nervous.
DLee looks more and more like an older player who has forgotten the strikezone. He just isn’t seeing the ball right now and has let a number of meatball pitches go by. Moving him down in the order seems to be only a week or so away, but I hope he stays in the lineup because Hoffpauir isn’t an everyday first baseman.
On the positive side Soriano is the first week MVP and Marmol is awesome.
