Bleed Cubbie Blue

Rivalry Week: Cubs vs. Cardinals, Thursday 4/16, 1:20 CT

By a week from Sunday, we should know a lot about the tone the NL Central race will take this season. Seven of the next ten games will be against the Cardinals, four this weekend at Wrigley Field, three next weekend in St. Louis. With Chris Carpenter out, the Cardinals will turn to 2006 draft pick P. J. Walters to start on Friday.

Meanwhile, today Sean Marshall will make his season debut, the first time the Cubs have used their fifth starter. Marshall made his major league debut on April 9, 2006 in this nationally televised ESPN Sunday night game; he threw fairly well, but allowed four runs in 4.1 innings. Michael Barrett won that game with a grand slam. Little did we know that it would be all downhill from there in 2006.

Things are better now, wouldn't you agree?

Now we know what's wrong with Kevin Gregg: after his knee surgery, his knee stiffens up if he pitches more than one inning, so he's going to be limited to single innings only. (Maybe they could have figured this out before last Friday?)

Baseball note of interest: a shout-out to Texas' Ian Kinsler, who became the first player since 1890 to have six hits in a game and hit for the cycle, too.

Today's Starting Pitchers

2009 - Adam Wainwright 1-0 2 2 0 0 0 0 10.1 8 2 2 0 8 11 1.74 1.55

Adam Wainwright has a 1.78 ERA so far this year, but has walked eight batters in 11 innings -- that's good news for the Cubs, who generally are patient hitters. Aramis Ramirez is expected back in the lineup today, with the weather expected to be pleasant; Ramirez is 7-for-21 (.333) lifetime vs. Wainwright, with a homer.

Sean Marshall is 2-1, 3.38 lifetime vs. St. Louis in nine appearances (five starts) -- last year he posted a 0.82 ERA against the Cardinals in 11 innings (five appearances, one start). Albert Pujols is 4-for 13, but no homers. Of the current Cardinals, only Brendan Ryan and Ryan Ludwick have homered off Marshall.

Today's game is cable-only in the St. Louis and Chicago areas, on EI and at the MLB.com Mediacenter. If you have EI you might be interested in flipping on the official opener of the new Yankee Stadium; they will play the first regular season game there today at 12:05 CDT vs. the Indians. Of course, we're already familiar with the new park with the two exhibition games the Cubs played there earlier this month.

Sure hope I can fly my new W flag again today
Me too!!

Let’s kick off a good long weekend today

Lineup:

Fonzie
RoboDome
D-Lee
Hoff (who called it? — in Right, gah)
My Man Crush Rami
LBR
Hello Soto
Riot
The Law

I called Hoff!

Yea me!!

I'm sorry

I mean boo me, didn’t want this

lol

it was going to happen at some point. He can start one game a month, I’m ok with that. :P

Yeah, you're right

one game a month is acceptable

Not sure I like a guy who has all of 4 at bats this season batting cleanup

Especially since Lee is what? 5 for 7 from that spot. And why is Gathright getting no at-bats? He’s not a great hitter, but he’s not the world’s worst either

Never mind on Gathright

was reading that wrong, and thinking Reed Johnson was in

I think Derrek just hits better at Wrigley

I still have reservations about him hitting third, especially with Aramis back, but at Wrigley it seems DLee is a better hitter.

And you would bat

Gathright cleanup?

New lineup!

1) Marshall (just to piss off Ted Lilly)
2) Riot (playing 3rd)
3) Miles (playing short)
4) Gathright (Center)
5) Hill (catcher)
6) Fontenot (2nd)
7) Lee (in Left)
8) Johnson (in right)
9) Hoffpauir (at first)

you're hilarious

sarcasm

Actually I revise that

Hoff should play second base, and Fonty should be the 1st baseman.

Clearly

That ensures we have a top defender at each position.

Indeed.

Although I may be overstating Gathright’s and Johnson’s skills. Perhaps Hill should play right, Gath behind the plate and Johnson can switch for… Theriot can’t field a single position. Hmmmm…

"Piss off Lilly" ????

Do you want Wrigley to be hit by a hurricane, locusts, frogs and more importantly do you want to risk the life of that
cute son of yours ( I am assuming his the first born male) ? Never, ever intentionally upset, annoy, irritate, disturb, let alone PISS OFF Ted Lilly.

One game a WEEK at first base would be fine with me.

Not today, of course, because DLee looked to be heating up at the plate yesterday. But from what I’ve read, Hoffpauir is a solid defensive first baseman – probably not brillant, but solid. So if you’re going to start him, put him there (or don’t start him). There’s no reason to put him in the outfield – and particularly not right field.

thing is

with Riot and Miles, we NEED brilliant.

Yeah, that's true - especially about Theriot.
I don't really trust Aramis on his own either
I wonder who has the better arm

Fonty or Rami.

Hands down, Rami

His problem isn’t strength. It’s aim.

Remember Major League III, when the old 1B stretched for a ball and fell over? That’s what I’m afraid will happen to Hoff.

At least our real lineup is out there today

Obviously Hoff isn’t Milton but just seeing the normal lineup construction and not Aaron Miles makes me happy.

My man crush > Your man crush

S’truth.

Lets kill these punks

Last season the Cardinals really struggled with lefty pitching. Hopefully those struggles still continue because their offense is really hot right now.

(Maybe they could have figured this out before last Friday?)

Like, you know, BEFORE WE HIRED HIM. Bah.

So when can we expect Milton Bradley back?
Next week I think

He is supposed to be out 3-5 days, which would end Saturday, so he may play Sunday. But most likely will be next week.

sucks for fantasy owners like myself :(
Cub fans too.
but mostly cubs fans who are fantasy owners lol
Didn't they say Saturday?

Though maybe if the weather is warm tomorrow he might play.

What was that about Milton Bradley's back? Not another injury I hope!
Huh?

I thought it was Bradley’s groin, and Ramirez’s back

no

Ramirez is back, but Bradley is still gone.

yes, I understand that

but there was no back injury to Milton, that was ARAM.

Who was in the DL first?
what?
I don't know

THIRD BASE!

I have no idea what the hell you're talking about
Who?

Who is on first.

uh? how hard can it be to understand milton's third base?
Milton is going to play third base?

I say we trade for Fielder, and put HIM at third base.

uh oh this calls for a fanpost

Fielder for bradley straight up, ship aram to sd for peavy

and Kenny Lofton

gets a little bit sadder in his retirement home…

i think kenny runs a program

to help parents cope with their children’s little league uniforms

HIRE THAT MAN!
throw him BACK
he too small for you, Emelie?

He couldn’t deliver a piano, for instance…

no delivery is too small
seriously?

that’s the straight line you give me? For realz?

because I care, drew, because I care
This weekend.

He’s doing some pre-game running today. Wittenmeyer just twittered it.

Per Gordo tweet:
Bradley to test groin w/ pregame running w/trainer. Still looking at possible weekend return.

Bradley to test groin w/ pregame running w/trainer.

Anyone else wonder what that REALLY means? Emelie, got any ideas? :P

C'mon now, he's a ballplayer, not the Maytag man.
which leads me back to

trading Bradley for Fielder, straight up.

Fielder = Fat

= not an athlete

Not fair -

Fielder is an athlete. He’s no Derrek Lee at 1B, but he’s an athlete.

No, Fielder is a big guy who can swing a monster bat and play a decent 1B

this is not someone who will be playing baseball when he is 33 unless he makes some major health strides

Or moves to the AL to be a DH.
George Steinbrenner's pacemaker

just missed a beat.

sure

I just dont consider guys who are only capable of hitting athletes. Great major league hitters? Sure. But not athletes

And

I just don’t think you know as much about Prince Fielder as you think you do.

for instance

he really loves ponies.

yeah, and saves baby seals on wednesdays
likes to make

paper rainbows in the clubhouse.

I heard he's opening up a soup kitchen

for kittys

donates time

to unicorn preservation efforts.

spends time trying to pin down and tickle Ryan Braun

while jason kendall draws hearts stars and horseshoes on his forhead…….:giggle giggle:

I give.

you win.

Sounds like a real great guy

I don’t see how my point was countered though, or even addressed???

Your contention

is that Fielder is a 1-dimensional slugger who doesn’t work on his overall game. If you don’t see that article addressing your contention, then, well, I don’t know what to say.

I resemble that remark!
yes, but do you have

any IDEAS?

Watching the last Wainwright start against the Astros

He was walking lots of guys and running up a high pitch count. He didn’t give up runs because the Astros couldn’t get the big hit when they needed it. That has been the Cubs problem at times this season. We get the guys on base but we need the big base hit to score those runs.

Lets punish this guy if he doesn’t bring good control today. Don’t count on the bases loaded walk to score all our runs.

Cards Week!

Time to get my hate on!

My mother is a Cards fan. My wife and the woman carrying my child (they are the same person) is a Cards fan. The fetus growing in my wife’s belly will be a Cards fan if my wife gets control.

Time to take a stand!

What is your plan of action to claim the baby as a Cub fan?

Your wife seems to have the edge since she literally has possession. You know, possession is 9/10 of the law!

You should watch X-MEN.

They take a few stands. Don’t put up for that crap, Worf.

My wife and the woman carrying my child (they are the same person)

ROFL

I realized my grammar wasn't the most ideal there...

Anyway, we’ve kind of agreed to let the child decide.

A few things are working against me:

The fact that my mother and her father (my father and her mother couldn’t care less) are Cards fans

Logistically, it’s easier for us to get to Cards games than Cubs games.

My wife is much more evil than I am.

In the end, I just want my child to love baseball. If he or she says, “To hell with both of you, I’m going to be a Brewers fan” that’s fine with me.

If he or she says, "To hell with both of you, I’m going to be a Brewers fan" that’s fine with me.

GASP.

We CANNOT let the child become a Brewers fan!
Friends don't let friends...
I just don't think

anyone should have to share in my misery.

Guys...

I’m with you. I actually had “Sox” fan there, but that was just too much.

My point is, I’d rather have a child who hates the Cubs than a child who hates baseball.

Hell, I became a Cubs fan in part because every single member of my family was a Cards fan and I hated being a conformist. I have to expect karma to bite me on that one.

I've got to think

that if you teach your child to read and to practice good dental hygiene, you’ve got a good shot at preventing a cards fan

ha.....ha...ha ha........aaaahhhhhh haha ha...........HA....HAHahahahhAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHahAhAhaAHA!
Heh

I’m still trying to figure out how my brother let his son become a Cards fan.

This make me very glad

to be dating a die-hard Cubs fan.

The rest of my family likes the Tigers so no real rivalry there.

Go Cubs Go!

I have to rush home after school so I can catch this game.

:)

I'm with ya here

Class is done at 2, im trying to plan my escape at 1….

gregg

are baseball players able to ride a stationary bike during innings to stay loose?

I think the rule says

they have to ride around in the outfield. If you hit one, you get two runs!

That would be funny

if it weren’t so horrifying.

I’m already having nightmares of Lou having burned up the pen in the 7th-8th and Gregg giving up a run for a tie…

any opposing team now knows

all they need to do is wait Gregg out.

Geez, Pujols hits nearly everybody...

Looking up his stats on baseball-reference.com, against pitchers he’s faced 25 times or more, only two have had much luck against him: Brandon Webb (.217) and Wandy Rodriguez (.150).

Check out his stats against these guys:

Greg Maddux – .341
Roy Oswalt – .315
Carlos Zambrano – .259 (way to go, Carlos!)
Roger Clemens – .308
Mark Prior – .348
Tom Glavine – .391
Jake Peavy – .350
Randy Johnson – .429

To quote Ron Santo…JEEEEEEZZ..

If nobody else gets on base

Then Pujols can hit as many homers as he wants

Look up his overall stats versus the Cubs.
How's he hit against Marmol?
Our best hitter is hitting 5th

And to make it worse, Micah freakin Hoffpauir is hitting 4th? Come on Lou, cut this RLR crap and put your best hitters where they’re supposed to be.

I'd guess he wants to leave everyone else in the same spot

and just is inserting Micah into Milton’s spot rather than redo the entire line-up.

The other guys lineup

Cardinals
2B Brendan Ryan
CF Rick Ankiel
1B Albert Pujols
RF Ryan Ludwick
C Yadier Molina
LF Chris Duncan
SS Khalil Greene
3B Brian Barden
P Adam Wainwright

yeah i remember Greene for some reason being a good hitter at wrigley. watch out for him.
not so much

200/236/400 career in Wrigley in 72 plate appearances

Yeah he seems to get some big homers at Wrigley
This is how you get TLR to stop hitting the pitcher 8th -

have a 3B who hits worse than the pitcher.

aw man

Greene was hitting cleanup before! What happened?

Khalil Greene happened.
just keep the televisions

out of his reach. That’s all I’m saying.

.273/.333/.303 on the season
Meh, that's not as bad as I expected.
yeah...those are KG's numbers from this year?........hmmm hearing cardinals fans talk around me is all about dissapointment
They woke up
CURSE YOU, TONY LARUSSA!

I cannot believe Hoffpauir is on the Chicago Cubs major league roster—and starting—in the middle of April. September, sure, April, no.

I think he earned his spot on the roster.

I just don’t want to see him playing outfield defense.

He'll do a good job in right
if we're lucky

he’ll be adequate.

We shall see, we shall see.
Come, now, the Great Hoff has great #s vs. Wainwright.

He’s 1 for 1 for a 2.000 OPS. That’s better than Derrek Lee, you know.

I'd rather have him start in April.
Plus, when he starts

he can’t be brought in to pinch-hit in crucial situations when all you need is basic contact made with the ball.

wait

is that good, or bad? I think it’s good — we got Reed who can pinch hit instead — and then go in for Hoff defensively.

Good -

There’s a case to be made that Hoffpauir playing the first 6 innings does less damage than Hoffpauir pinch-hitting with the game on the line.

nice RBI double yesterday
Believe it..............
No. 1 Hoffpauir Fan in the house!
one of few...........

but the bandwagon will be full soon

clean-up at that..........
I still think its weird to read that the Cubs are patient hitters

Especially when its not followed by a punchline.

The Cubs are patient hitters....That's funny, I dreamed I was skiing!
I once had a dream that a hot dog...ah, forget it.
you weren't wearing loafers were you?!??!?!
Ok, that's a bit more like it
Gregg

Maybe they could have figured out the knee situation before acquiring him?

That would've been a kneejerk reaction.
and we don't apprecitate that in this joint.
The knee bone is

connected to the funny bone

Memphis: Game on Comcast Digital Channel 25

The game will be on FSTennessee in Memphis on Comcast digital channel 25 taking the Fox Sports Midwest Cardinals feed.

Good luck today Sean!!

With the Hoff actually in the starting line-up means a shit load of Erin pictures today.

you can't say shit.
POO!!!! POOO!!!!

How’s that?

she can't?

shit. Shit. SHIT.

Works for me.

i believe she typed it
And remember, folks who plan to post pics:

Put a subject line on your posts, so they can be closed after viewing (and magically spurring Micah Hoffpauir to spectacular offensive success).

Also:

Make sure they are 3-5 mb each.

set at 300dpi

make sure you post it twice

just in case we miss it the first time.

Drew we should write a handbook
We should.
I think the title is:

How to Get Flamed in 3.5 Seconds in Game Thread: If You Can Somehow Manage to Keep Up with the Jumps

ROFL

It’s ridiculous how many times I’ve had to leave a trail of cookie crumbs for these people.

I know it's not SOP to list tix here

but I have 3 bleacher tix for today’s game that I’m looking to just dump. They’re $25 face but I’m willing to go as low as $10 at this point. I live across the street so if anyone wants them, they’re yours. And Go Cubs!

Do you know how tempting it is to leave work?

That is going to make it really difficult to sit through my 1:30 meeting.

What did we have to turn into such responsible adults?

I was much happier as an irresponsible adolescent.

I don't think I could get downtown by game time

and Max has baseball practice today, too. Buggrit.

I swear if I worked in Wrigleyville I'd...well, I'd probably lose my job.
And then live in a box on the street corner?
the better to catch fly balls, my dear.
No, I've live in a van down by the river!

And by “river” I mean “lake.”

eating a steady diet of GOVERNMENT CHEESE!
HA! I remember government cheese.
your gonna be doing a lot of doobie rolling

when your living in a VAN down by the river!!

Well whoop de freakin' doo!
why don't you shut your BIG YAPPER?!?!?!
So I don't "bathe regularly" and I sometimes "get high"....is that so wrong?
and by van

you mean wheelbarrow?

Down by the River

Yeah, she could drag me
over the rainbow,
send me away
Down by the river
I shot my baby
Down by the river,
Dead, oh, shot her dead.

Nice. I can dig some classic Neil Young.

I hear he has a new album out….something about electric cars.

what rhymes with "Volt"?
Bolt

Colt

Holt, bolt, molt, jolt,

Holt is an electrical equipment distributor in Wisconsin

Other than that, it’s really not a word as far as I know.

old timey

word for “hold” as in “house and hold”. I learned THAT from Elfquest.

Ah, there's no limit to what one can learn on BCB

Thanks, Drew.

DMB Cover >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Neil Young Original
No offense, legions of DMB fans, but I'll stick with the original.
I somehow doubt you've heard the DMB cover

If you have heard both, loyalty to the original aside, there is NO WAY anyone in their right mind could prefer the Neil Young version. Same goes for Hey Hey My My

We'll have to agree to disagree on this.

I’m not a DMB fan and, even though I haven’t heard his versions of either song, I’m pretty confident he couldn’t top Neil’s originals – especially “Down By the River.” Crazy Horse in its prime could blow DMB off the stage.

I just can't see how you can make that assumption without even listening to a DMB song?

Not trying to tell you what to think, but man are you missing out. Give DMB a knowledgeable shot, they well FAR FAR FAR exceed your expectations

Well, let me be clear:

I’ve heard PLENTY of DMB songs. Plenty. He just doesn’t do a thing for me. Seems like a talented guy and his band is clearly made up of talented musicians, but his songs just don’t satisfy. I have minimal patience for the whole “jam band” scene in general.

I need to give ya some real dmb music, not that studio or on radio stuff :)

Alright, enough music chit chat! Lets Go Cubs!

I suppose it's possible he might win me over live.

Anyway, yeah, 10 minutes to baseball!

Live is where the bread and butter is

Its the only thing ill listen too

He/they won't

Trust me. Most boringest shows I’ve ever seen—and I was a big fan in my teens.

LOL - yeah, jam bands tend to do that.
It looks sweet, you check out the new single Funny The Way It Is?
Yes!

actually just downloaded the first concert at MSG.

Funny The Way It Is = Huge Live Potential

Spaceman = Delicious

Why I Am = Going to be a DMB monster

yeah Jayo you shouldn't post that here

Not because its not the right place or any of that bs. Its because most of us are at work and the fact you’re throwing these tickets at us is very painful.

Slightly less painful to me

here on the West Coast, but it still stings, having never been to Wrigley.

Seriously

If I didn’t have that stupid meeting I would be out of here.

With Hoff in Right...

I think we can expect a “Would Hoff have made the catch that Cliff made” thread.

I think the answer is no.

we could do it in reverse

for every play. “Would Cliff have caught that one? How about that one? Now? Now?”

Lets just hope no tough balls are hit to RF today...
yes yes yes!

I cannot wait for Marshall’s start. I hope he goes 6-7 strong, with a maximum 2 runs given up

Hey if you're bored. The whole 1st inning of the yankees/ indians game is being shown for free at mlb.com
I'm bored

but I’m not bored enough to watch the Yankees, and if Kerry Wood is pitching in the first inning, there’s DEFINITELY something wrong.

Well

I was bored enough to check it out, but they cut the feed before the end of the 1st… dumb mlb.com.

Good afternoon everyone

How’s everybody doing? Did y’all read the letter Blago wrote to Lou Piniella in 2007? Good laughs.

Yeah, give us a link if you've got one.

I’d like to read that.

Here'tis

Crazy man.

LMAO

We should check the BCB archives to see whether Blago wrote a Fanpost Diary about his proposed lineup around that time. C’mon, GRod, Soriano in that three hole? That’s not f**king golden. That’s not f**king golden at all.

I always wondered

if he is/was a member here.

suddenly

BLou’s past becomes a lot more clear.

I thought the same thing

but BLou/BlueMike sometimes has a wisp of intelligence in his rants, unlike Blago.

isn't that

when his lovely and civil-tongued wife took over the keyboard?

seems like Blago put more thought into managing the Cubs instead of managing the state.

…the State of Illinois, not the State of Denial.

HE'LL NEVER GO AWAY WE CAN'T GET RID OF HIM.... HELP!!!!
And he'll appear on your NBC affiliate very soon!

Bradley’s groin is much better.

Again, I say… how does s/he know?

Sometimes it just feels right.

Well I'm new

So I won’t catch you, but I’ll still laugh at your jokes

Welcome aboard!

I like you already!

oh dude, you gotta create a fanpost to introduce yourself. Welcome
I didn't know such a small act merited the creation of a fanpost...

but… thank you?

Most things do.

But we prefer if you post about something that’s already been posted.

perhaps

how the lineup should be changed, or when we should give up on Fukudome, Bradley, Lee or Lou.

Funny how they’re never about Theriot…

That's because he sucks
oh, right

this is why we don’t have any about giving up on Miles, either.

Maybe there should be one on Fontriles

All scrap, all the time.

I'll just

tear off a piece of paper to write that on.

Maybe the haters are over 5'8"

and thus can’t see the Scrap Squad.

Jeez, don't encourage him.
Um....

I’m sorry?

Not you . . . last week there were about 10 topics covered in multiple fanposts
If you encourage him, he tells more jokes. And they get worse.
LOL reply read fail

Hahaha I misread it to where I thought you were discouraging me from introducing myself via fanpost.

No, No everyone does that. No matter how often we've gone over them. You've

got to do the fanpost thing. It required.

wait, who is the one telling the jokes?
Please be more specific.
yes, who

he’s on first i believe

aaaaaaah!

BWAHAHA!

We finally are able to put a face to the name.

we're funning you, son.

sorry. It’s been a bit batty around here lately. Start of the season.

Welcome to you! :)

thanks

Good day all...

Cubs are going to win today.

mmhm, damn righ they will
I say, good chap

Do you think that the Chicago National League Ball club will prevail in their tete-a-tete later after tea?

Certainly my good man, certainly...

That Japanese fellow I believe is going to have a whale of a match as well.

he is a pip, 'tis true

how do you wager that young Hoff fellow is going to perform?

I do believe he'll do fine with the bat...

Perhaps two out of four, but I have reservations about the young man in the right field position. I hope no mashers are sent his way.

Seems to me the issue

with the lad is that he has two left feet.

I predict we'll be well on our way to victory by afternoon tea.

and pass him around
Post again in the first pitch thread please.
Maybe make a fanpost about it, too
then we can make a parody of it!
And then pass it around.
Did anyone think that Gregg's knee did not "act up" until he played

in cool/cold damp air. He did pitch two straight innings in AZ with no problems. But as we all know, the weather was very warm and dry out there when he did it. (Marmol did it the same day, right?). Am I mistaken on the two inning stint in AZ?

Anyway, cold/damp weather can make bones and muscles act a lot different than when you are in heat and dry air, so let’s not assume he was hiding anything from anyone. He is getting used to how his body is responding to the surgery. My guess is this problem will not be as bad when the weather warms up.

I was thinking the same thing

Though the fact it was bothering him in Houston and Milwauke (domed) is a little concerning.

I believe it was a bit chilly inside the dome in Milwaukee

Not the 30 degrees it was outside, but around the upper 50s, if I recall correctly.

damn that gammy leg!
it gets that cold inside Miller Park?

interesting. if that’s the case, i can understand why he might have some trouble in there.

I know it does

I’m having a hard time finding that data on the Interwebz though. Pat and Ron mentioned it on Thursday’s broadcast.

Yeah, I remember them mentioning that it was only around 50 degrees in there.

Of course, that was still better than 35 or so degrees outside.

wait

even under the lights?
