By a week from Sunday, we should know a lot about the tone the NL Central race will take this season. Seven of the next ten games will be against the Cardinals, four this weekend at Wrigley Field, three next weekend in St. Louis. With Chris Carpenter out, the Cardinals will turn to 2006 draft pick P. J. Walters to start on Friday.
Meanwhile, today Sean Marshall will make his season debut, the first time the Cubs have used their fifth starter. Marshall made his major league debut on April 9, 2006 in this nationally televised ESPN Sunday night game; he threw fairly well, but allowed four runs in 4.1 innings. Michael Barrett won that game with a grand slam. Little did we know that it would be all downhill from there in 2006.
Things are better now, wouldn't you agree?
Now we know what's wrong with Kevin Gregg: after his knee surgery, his knee stiffens up if he pitches more than one inning, so he's going to be limited to single innings only. (Maybe they could have figured this out before last Friday?)
Baseball note of interest: a shout-out to Texas' Ian Kinsler, who became the first player since 1890 to have six hits in a game and hit for the cycle, too.
| Today's Starting Pitchers | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Adam Wainwright has a 1.78 ERA so far this year, but has walked eight batters in 11 innings -- that's good news for the Cubs, who generally are patient hitters. Aramis Ramirez is expected back in the lineup today, with the weather expected to be pleasant; Ramirez is 7-for-21 (.333) lifetime vs. Wainwright, with a homer.
Sean Marshall is 2-1, 3.38 lifetime vs. St. Louis in nine appearances (five starts) -- last year he posted a 0.82 ERA against the Cardinals in 11 innings (five appearances, one start). Albert Pujols is 4-for 13, but no homers. Of the current Cardinals, only Brendan Ryan and Ryan Ludwick have homered off Marshall.
Today's game is cable-only in the St. Louis and Chicago areas, on EI and at the MLB.com Mediacenter. If you have EI you might be interested in flipping on the official opener of the new Yankee Stadium; they will play the first regular season game there today at 12:05 CDT vs. the Indians. Of course, we're already familiar with the new park with the two exhibition games the Cubs played there earlier this month.
Discuss amongst yourselves.

Sure hope I can fly my new W flag again today
Emelie - April 16, 2009
Me too!!
Let’s kick off a good long weekend today
gwood - April 16, 2009
Lineup:
Fonzie
RoboDome
D-Lee
Hoff (who called it? — in Right, gah)
My Man Crush Rami
LBR
Hello Soto
Riot
The Law
drewishdrewid - April 16, 2009
I called Hoff!
Yea me!!
gwood - April 16, 2009
I'm sorry
I mean boo me, didn’t want this
gwood - April 16, 2009
lol
it was going to happen at some point. He can start one game a month, I’m ok with that. :P
drewishdrewid - April 16, 2009
Yeah, you're right
one game a month is acceptable
gwood - April 16, 2009
Not sure I like a guy who has all of 4 at bats this season batting cleanup
Especially since Lee is what? 5 for 7 from that spot. And why is Gathright getting no at-bats? He’s not a great hitter, but he’s not the world’s worst either
BoVandy - April 16, 2009
Never mind on Gathright
was reading that wrong, and thinking Reed Johnson was in
BoVandy - April 16, 2009
I think Derrek just hits better at Wrigley
I still have reservations about him hitting third, especially with Aramis back, but at Wrigley it seems DLee is a better hitter.
nji232 - April 16, 2009
And you would bat
Gathright cleanup?
New lineup!
1) Marshall (just to piss off Ted Lilly)
2) Riot (playing 3rd)
3) Miles (playing short)
4) Gathright (Center)
5) Hill (catcher)
6) Fontenot (2nd)
7) Lee (in Left)
8) Johnson (in right)
9) Hoffpauir (at first)
drewishdrewid - April 16, 2009
you're hilarious
sarcasm
BoVandy - April 16, 2009
Actually I revise that
Hoff should play second base, and Fonty should be the 1st baseman.
drewishdrewid - April 16, 2009
Clearly
That ensures we have a top defender at each position.
nji232 - April 16, 2009
Indeed.
Although I may be overstating Gathright’s and Johnson’s skills. Perhaps Hill should play right, Gath behind the plate and Johnson can switch for… Theriot can’t field a single position. Hmmmm…
drewishdrewid - April 16, 2009
"Piss off Lilly" ????
Do you want Wrigley to be hit by a hurricane, locusts, frogs and more importantly do you want to risk the life of that
cute son of yours ( I am assuming his the first born male) ? Never, ever intentionally upset, annoy, irritate, disturb, let alone PISS OFF Ted Lilly.
Doggie Stalker - April 16, 2009
One game a WEEK at first base would be fine with me.
Not today, of course, because DLee looked to be heating up at the plate yesterday. But from what I’ve read, Hoffpauir is a solid defensive first baseman – probably not brillant, but solid. So if you’re going to start him, put him there (or don’t start him). There’s no reason to put him in the outfield – and particularly not right field.
daver - April 16, 2009
thing is
with Riot and Miles, we NEED brilliant.
drewishdrewid - April 16, 2009
Yeah, that's true - especially about Theriot.
daver - April 16, 2009
I don't really trust Aramis on his own either
Worf - April 16, 2009
I wonder who has the better arm
Fonty or Rami.
drewishdrewid - April 16, 2009
Hands down, Rami
His problem isn’t strength. It’s aim.
Remember Major League III, when the old 1B stretched for a ball and fell over? That’s what I’m afraid will happen to Hoff.
Worf - April 16, 2009
At least our real lineup is out there today
Obviously Hoff isn’t Milton but just seeing the normal lineup construction and not Aaron Miles makes me happy.
nji232 - April 16, 2009
My man crush > Your man crush
S’truth.
Clutch16 - April 16, 2009
Lets kill these punks
Last season the Cardinals really struggled with lefty pitching. Hopefully those struggles still continue because their offense is really hot right now.
nji232 - April 16, 2009
(Maybe they could have figured this out before last Friday?)
Like, you know, BEFORE WE HIRED HIM. Bah.
drewishdrewid - April 16, 2009
So when can we expect Milton Bradley back?
xene - April 16, 2009
Next week I think
He is supposed to be out 3-5 days, which would end Saturday, so he may play Sunday. But most likely will be next week.
gwood - April 16, 2009
sucks for fantasy owners like myself :(
heine41 - April 16, 2009
Cub fans too.
N Oakley - April 16, 2009
but mostly cubs fans who are fantasy owners lol
heine41 - April 16, 2009
Didn't they say Saturday?
Though maybe if the weather is warm tomorrow he might play.
nji232 - April 16, 2009
What was that about Milton Bradley's back? Not another injury I hope!
santoswoodenlegs - April 16, 2009
Huh?
I thought it was Bradley’s groin, and Ramirez’s back
BoVandy - April 16, 2009
no
Ramirez is back, but Bradley is still gone.
drewishdrewid - April 16, 2009
yes, I understand that
but there was no back injury to Milton, that was ARAM.
BoVandy - April 16, 2009
Who was in the DL first?
drewishdrewid - April 16, 2009
what?
BoVandy - April 16, 2009
I don't know
THIRD BASE!
drewishdrewid - April 16, 2009
I have no idea what the hell you're talking about
BoVandy - April 16, 2009
Who?
Who is on first.
drewishdrewid - April 16, 2009
uh? how hard can it be to understand milton's third base?
xene - April 16, 2009
Milton is going to play third base?
I say we trade for Fielder, and put HIM at third base.
drewishdrewid - April 16, 2009
uh oh this calls for a fanpost
Fielder for bradley straight up, ship aram to sd for peavy
xene - April 16, 2009
and Kenny Lofton
gets a little bit sadder in his retirement home…
drewishdrewid - April 16, 2009
i think kenny runs a program
to help parents cope with their children’s little league uniforms
xene - April 16, 2009
HIRE THAT MAN!
drewishdrewid - April 16, 2009
throw him BACK
Emelie - April 16, 2009
he too small for you, Emelie?
He couldn’t deliver a piano, for instance…
drewishdrewid - April 16, 2009
no delivery is too small
Emelie - April 16, 2009
seriously?
that’s the straight line you give me? For realz?
drewishdrewid - April 16, 2009
because I care, drew, because I care
Emelie - April 16, 2009
TWSS
sniff…
drewishdrewid - April 16, 2009
see what you did SWL?
xene - April 16, 2009
drewishdrewid - April 16, 2009
This weekend.
He’s doing some pre-game running today. Wittenmeyer just twittered it.
drewishdrewid - April 16, 2009
Per Gordo tweet:
daver - April 16, 2009
Bradley to test groin w/ pregame running w/trainer.
Anyone else wonder what that REALLY means? Emelie, got any ideas? :P
drewishdrewid - April 16, 2009
C'mon now, he's a ballplayer, not the Maytag man.
daver - April 16, 2009
which leads me back to
trading Bradley for Fielder, straight up.
drewishdrewid - April 16, 2009
Fielder = Fat
= not an athlete
heine41 - April 16, 2009
Not fair -
Fielder is an athlete. He’s no Derrek Lee at 1B, but he’s an athlete.
DGU - April 16, 2009
No, Fielder is a big guy who can swing a monster bat and play a decent 1B
this is not someone who will be playing baseball when he is 33 unless he makes some major health strides
heine41 - April 16, 2009
Or moves to the AL to be a DH.
daver - April 16, 2009
George Steinbrenner's pacemaker
just missed a beat.
drewishdrewid - April 16, 2009
sure
I just dont consider guys who are only capable of hitting athletes. Great major league hitters? Sure. But not athletes
heine41 - April 16, 2009
And
I just don’t think you know as much about Prince Fielder as you think you do.
DGU - April 16, 2009
for instance
he really loves ponies.
drewishdrewid - April 16, 2009
yeah, and saves baby seals on wednesdays
heine41 - April 16, 2009

heine41 - April 16, 2009
I give.
you win.
drewishdrewid - April 16, 2009
Sounds like a real great guy
I don’t see how my point was countered though, or even addressed???
heine41 - April 16, 2009
Your contention
is that Fielder is a 1-dimensional slugger who doesn’t work on his overall game. If you don’t see that article addressing your contention, then, well, I don’t know what to say.
DGU - April 16, 2009
I resemble that remark!
Emelie - April 16, 2009
yes, but do you have
any IDEAS?
drewishdrewid - April 16, 2009
Watching the last Wainwright start against the Astros
He was walking lots of guys and running up a high pitch count. He didn’t give up runs because the Astros couldn’t get the big hit when they needed it. That has been the Cubs problem at times this season. We get the guys on base but we need the big base hit to score those runs.
Lets punish this guy if he doesn’t bring good control today. Don’t count on the bases loaded walk to score all our runs.
nji232 - April 16, 2009
Cards Week!
Time to get my hate on!
My mother is a Cards fan. My wife and the woman carrying my child (they are the same person) is a Cards fan. The fetus growing in my wife’s belly will be a Cards fan if my wife gets control.
Time to take a stand!
Worf - April 16, 2009
What is your plan of action to claim the baby as a Cub fan?
Your wife seems to have the edge since she literally has possession. You know, possession is 9/10 of the law!
cowsarecool220 - April 16, 2009
You should watch X-MEN.
They take a few stands. Don’t put up for that crap, Worf.
dtpollitt - April 16, 2009
My wife and the woman carrying my child (they are the same person)
ROFL
drewishdrewid - April 16, 2009
I realized my grammar wasn't the most ideal there...
Anyway, we’ve kind of agreed to let the child decide.
A few things are working against me:
The fact that my mother and her father (my father and her mother couldn’t care less) are Cards fans
Logistically, it’s easier for us to get to Cards games than Cubs games.
My wife is much more evil than I am.
In the end, I just want my child to love baseball. If he or she says, “To hell with both of you, I’m going to be a Brewers fan” that’s fine with me.
Worf - April 16, 2009
If he or she says, "To hell with both of you, I’m going to be a Brewers fan" that’s fine with me.
GASP.
drewishdrewid - April 16, 2009
We CANNOT let the child become a Brewers fan!
cowsarecool220 - April 16, 2009
Friends don't let friends...
daver - April 16, 2009
I just don't think
anyone should have to share in my misery.
drewishdrewid - April 16, 2009
Guys...
I’m with you. I actually had “Sox” fan there, but that was just too much.
My point is, I’d rather have a child who hates the Cubs than a child who hates baseball.
Hell, I became a Cubs fan in part because every single member of my family was a Cards fan and I hated being a conformist. I have to expect karma to bite me on that one.
Worf - April 16, 2009
I've got to think
that if you teach your child to read and to practice good dental hygiene, you’ve got a good shot at preventing a cards fan
TC Cubby - April 16, 2009
ha.....ha...ha ha........aaaahhhhhh haha ha...........HA....HAHahahahhAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHahAhAhaAHA!
heine41 - April 16, 2009
Heh
I’m still trying to figure out how my brother let his son become a Cards fan.
Craig in South Bend - April 16, 2009
This make me very glad
to be dating a die-hard Cubs fan.
The rest of my family likes the Tigers so no real rivalry there.
lindz221 - April 16, 2009
Go Cubs Go!
I have to rush home after school so I can catch this game.
:)
slcathena - April 16, 2009
I'm with ya here
Class is done at 2, im trying to plan my escape at 1….
heine41 - April 16, 2009
gregg
are baseball players able to ride a stationary bike during innings to stay loose?
cozmotaylor123 - April 16, 2009
I think the rule says
they have to ride around in the outfield. If you hit one, you get two runs!
drewishdrewid - April 16, 2009
That would be funny
if it weren’t so horrifying.
I’m already having nightmares of Lou having burned up the pen in the 7th-8th and Gregg giving up a run for a tie…
slcathena - April 16, 2009
any opposing team now knows
all they need to do is wait Gregg out.
drewishdrewid - April 16, 2009
Geez, Pujols hits nearly everybody...
Looking up his stats on baseball-reference.com, against pitchers he’s faced 25 times or more, only two have had much luck against him: Brandon Webb (.217) and Wandy Rodriguez (.150).
Check out his stats against these guys:
Greg Maddux – .341
Roy Oswalt – .315
Carlos Zambrano – .259 (way to go, Carlos!)
Roger Clemens – .308
Mark Prior – .348
Tom Glavine – .391
Jake Peavy – .350
Randy Johnson – .429
To quote Ron Santo…JEEEEEEZZ..
jdb-44 - April 16, 2009
If nobody else gets on base
Then Pujols can hit as many homers as he wants
nji232 - April 16, 2009
Look up his overall stats versus the Cubs.
cowsarecool220 - April 16, 2009
How's he hit against Marmol?
Scruff0082 - April 16, 2009
Our best hitter is hitting 5th
And to make it worse, Micah freakin Hoffpauir is hitting 4th? Come on Lou, cut this RLR crap and put your best hitters where they’re supposed to be.
kanderber - April 16, 2009
I'd guess he wants to leave everyone else in the same spot
and just is inserting Micah into Milton’s spot rather than redo the entire line-up.
cowsarecool220 - April 16, 2009
The other guys lineup
Cardinals
2B Brendan Ryan
CF Rick Ankiel
1B Albert Pujols
RF Ryan Ludwick
C Yadier Molina
LF Chris Duncan
SS Khalil Greene
3B Brian Barden
P Adam Wainwright
nji232 - April 16, 2009
yeah i remember Greene for some reason being a good hitter at wrigley. watch out for him.
xene - April 16, 2009
not so much
200/236/400 career in Wrigley in 72 plate appearances
TC Cubby - April 16, 2009
Yeah he seems to get some big homers at Wrigley
nji232 - April 16, 2009
This is how you get TLR to stop hitting the pitcher 8th -
have a 3B who hits worse than the pitcher.
DGU - April 16, 2009
aw man
Greene was hitting cleanup before! What happened?
drewishdrewid - April 16, 2009
Khalil Greene happened.
daver - April 16, 2009

drewishdrewid - April 16, 2009

DGU - April 16, 2009
Meh, that's not as bad as I expected.
daver - April 16, 2009
yeah...those are KG's numbers from this year?........hmmm hearing cardinals fans talk around me is all about dissapointment

nji232 - April 16, 2009
CURSE YOU, TONY LARUSSA!
drewishdrewid - April 16, 2009
I cannot believe Hoffpauir is on the Chicago Cubs major league roster—and starting—in the middle of April. September, sure, April, no.
dtpollitt - April 16, 2009
I think he earned his spot on the roster.
I just don’t want to see him playing outfield defense.
daver - April 16, 2009
He'll do a good job in right
Clutche - April 16, 2009
if we're lucky
he’ll be adequate.
drewishdrewid - April 16, 2009
We shall see, we shall see.
daver - April 16, 2009
Come, now, the Great Hoff has great #s vs. Wainwright.
He’s 1 for 1 for a 2.000 OPS. That’s better than Derrek Lee, you know.
DGU - April 16, 2009
ROFL!

daver - April 16, 2009
I'd rather have him start in April.
drewishdrewid - April 16, 2009
Plus, when he starts
he can’t be brought in to pinch-hit in crucial situations when all you need is basic contact made with the ball.
DGU - April 16, 2009
wait
is that good, or bad? I think it’s good — we got Reed who can pinch hit instead — and then go in for Hoff defensively.
drewishdrewid - April 16, 2009
Good -
There’s a case to be made that Hoffpauir playing the first 6 innings does less damage than Hoffpauir pinch-hitting with the game on the line.
DGU - April 16, 2009
nice RBI double yesterday

DMB Cover >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Neil Young Original
heine41 - April 16, 2009
No offense, legions of DMB fans, but I'll stick with the original.
daver - April 16, 2009
I somehow doubt you've heard the DMB cover
If you have heard both, loyalty to the original aside, there is NO WAY anyone in their right mind could prefer the Neil Young version. Same goes for Hey Hey My My
heine41 - April 16, 2009
We'll have to agree to disagree on this.
I’m not a DMB fan and, even though I haven’t heard his versions of either song, I’m pretty confident he couldn’t top Neil’s originals – especially “Down By the River.” Crazy Horse in its prime could blow DMB off the stage.
daver - April 16, 2009
+18
Emelie - April 16, 2009
I just can't see how you can make that assumption without even listening to a DMB song?
Not trying to tell you what to think, but man are you missing out. Give DMB a knowledgeable shot, they well FAR FAR FAR exceed your expectations
heine41 - April 16, 2009
Well, let me be clear:
I’ve heard PLENTY of DMB songs. Plenty. He just doesn’t do a thing for me. Seems like a talented guy and his band is clearly made up of talented musicians, but his songs just don’t satisfy. I have minimal patience for the whole “jam band” scene in general.
daver - April 16, 2009

Did anyone think that Gregg's knee did not "act up" until he played
in cool/cold damp air. He did pitch two straight innings in AZ with no problems. But as we all know, the weather was very warm and dry out there when he did it. (Marmol did it the same day, right?). Am I mistaken on the two inning stint in AZ?
Anyway, cold/damp weather can make bones and muscles act a lot different than when you are in heat and dry air, so let’s not assume he was hiding anything from anyone. He is getting used to how his body is responding to the surgery. My guess is this problem will not be as bad when the weather warms up.
LAcarl519 - April 16, 2009
I was thinking the same thing
Though the fact it was bothering him in Houston and Milwauke (domed) is a little concerning.
