Just when it appeared that the Cubs would not only have their third tie of the week, but their third 8-8 tie (no one was warming up and it was clear the game was going to be over after the last of the 9th), Reed Johnson singled, was sacrificed to second and singled in by Andres Blanco and the Cubs finished off the Arizona portion of the 2009 preseason with a 9-8 win over the Indians.
It was a strange day. The Cubs wore their blue batting practice tops for a game in Mesa for the first time that I can remember -- guess the white pinstripes were already packed. And on a day when you'd figure everyone was going to be swinging at the first pitch, the teams combined for eight walks and the game time was a langorous two hours and fifty-five minutes; by game's end all the regular Cubs who were in the game were long departed. Jim McArdle caught up with Ryan Dempster in the parking lot to get him a copy of his book "Living The Dream", and came back with this scoop: Dempster's wife Jennifer had a baby girl yesterday. Congratulations to the Dempsters on their second child (they also have a son).
The five walks drawn by the Cubs brought their spring total to 137, one more than the Angels, who play tonight, and the nine runs made the season total 241 (6.7 per game), second to the Angels and one more than the Royals, who scored three today in a 9-3 loss to the Rangers.
After solo homers by Shin-Soo Choo and Alfonso Soriano made it 1-1 after 1, the Cubs blasted Anthony Reyes for six runs in the second, the big blow being a bases-clearing triple by Koyie Hill (although, Dempster would probably want to say that his solid single to right field was important, too). Then the Indians chipped away; Dempster allowed another homer to pinch-hitter Andy Marte and after that, the bullpen was victimized by minor leaguer fielding. The Cubs were charged with no errors, but at least one run scored when minor leaguer Matt Camp turned the wrong way on a hit-and-run. That run scored off Chad Gaudin, who actually didn't throw too badly even though he allowed three runs. The homer given up by Gaudin to Ryan Garko was a blast that hit an umbrella over the Indians' relief pitchers in the RF bullpen. The minor leaguers we saw today are likely to comprise most of the Iowa roster, including non-roster guys So Taguchi and Chad Fox (who threw a nice 1-2-3 inning), who will likely be added to the Iowa roster soon, if they haven't been already.
Word is that Jim Hendry is still trying to deal Gaudin. The Rockies have expressed interest. His velocity looked good today and apart from the homer, his location was pretty good as well. At this point, all the Cubs would like another team to do is to take the contract and give back a face-saving prospect.
David Patton, who Lou wants on the team (and the reason they're trying so hard to trade Gaudin), had a tough inning, but again, he could have been saved by major league fielders. He did manage to induce a couple of ground balls, one of which was a DP ball from Choo, but the next batter, Josh Barfield, drove in the tying run. I'd still like to see the General on the team and hope that the Cubs can make some sort of deal to keep him.
The smallish crowd of 7,933 enjoyed perfect weather -- again -- and brought the season total to 203,105, which will stand as the major league spring training record for quite some time (because it's unlikely that any teams will have as many as 19 spring home dates again). The average of 10,690 isn't a record, but stands up well in these tough economic times and once again, the Cubs led the Cactus League in average home attendance (and boosted everyone else's attendance as Cub fans populated almost half the parks in road games).
Tomorrow in New York, weather permitting, Ted Lilly will face Chien-Ming Wang. TV coverage will be on the MLB Network and, as posted in Trey2317's FanShot, you can watch for free on MLB.com, as long as you have a MLB.com account (if you've ordered tickets online, you have one).
Finally, this exchange overheard today:
Vendor: Lemonade, lemonade, just like grandma made!
Fan: Hey, grandma never charged us!
Vendor: Hey, grandma has a new longterm contract. It's a tough economy, gotta pay for it somehow!

cannot wait for monday
Chanman25 - April 2, 2009
though tomorrow's game should be interesting
There will definitely be jet lag though..
Chanman25 - April 2, 2009
now lets get through NY
with no injuries and decent performances and ready for the real thing!
halfblindcubbiegirl - April 2, 2009
Agreed.
Can’t wait!
Al Yellon - April 2, 2009
Al, you going to NY now or home to Chicago?
calicubfan - April 2, 2009
didn't Al mention he would be in AZ until the 9th?
Cubbie-Tim - April 2, 2009
Must have missed that.
I thought he’d want to see those games in NY @ the new park
calicubfan - April 2, 2009
Would have loved to.
Way too much travel, too complicated, would rather have the extra sunshine, especially with the forecast of rain in NYC.
Al Yellon - April 2, 2009
too bad you can't make it to Houston monday for opening day Al
Cubbie-Tim - April 2, 2009
Would love to.
Have been to Houston before. You guys carry on without me and bring us three wins!
Al Yellon - April 2, 2009
Is the mlb.com blacked out as usual?
My guess is that it is…depressing. Another year with these horrible blackouts. Somethings gotta give sometime in my lifetime.
jeff_pico - April 2, 2009
No, according to the article, there are no blackouts for the NY games.
Al Yellon - April 2, 2009
How about we trade
Gaudin to the Rockies for Marquis!!!
wrigleyrocker12 - April 2, 2009
Don't be silly.
We should get Matt Murton back.
daver - April 2, 2009
I second that.
Doggie Stalker - April 2, 2009
Well, of course you do.
If he hit lefthanded, Lou would be right there with you.
Al Yellon - April 2, 2009
Dante Bichette anyone?
Well, if not, I think he’s got a son.
Brett Taylor - April 3, 2009
+1
Zeke - April 2, 2009
Well, it's nice to hear Gaudin didn't look horrible.
When I saw his line in the box score, I couldn’t decide whether to laugh or swear. Did he have a single scoreless outing this spring?
daver - April 2, 2009
Two things nobody here cares about:
1. The Cubs will fly again this year on United flight #9907. Today, it is delayed. Here’s the link to follow them.
2. I just got sent to Mexico City to work for the week and will miss Opening Day. I’m a wreck. I waited 179 days for Monday to be here, and now I’ll miss the games.
chilango2 - April 2, 2009
Alright, I have to ask.
How did you learn their flight number?
And sorry to hear about your job thing. That really sucks. Do you have mlb.tv? If so, you can watch the archived games.
daver - April 2, 2009
I write (freelance) about aviation
and I was curious about it last year and found out. It took about three clicks of a mouse, actually. The Cubs and White Sox both have contracts with United—the Sox’s expires at the end of this year.
I live in Chicago, so buying a MLB.TV account seems redundant. So I’ll follow here with y’all.
chilango2 - April 2, 2009
Is that the flight number for them for the whole season?
Al Yellon - April 2, 2009
Yes
The equipment will vary between a 757 and a A320.
chilango2 - April 2, 2009
Cool, thanks.
I signed up for that site so I can track them!
Al Yellon - April 2, 2009
here's a list of most pro sports teams charter flight #s:
It looks like teams use the same flight #. Click on the Rays one…last flight was from Philly last year after the World Series.
cubbot - April 2, 2009
Looks like you can register...
..w/ the site and get updates of that flight #?
chilango2 — Is every MLB team’s flight # the same all season?
calicubfan - April 2, 2009
Yes
Except for the Orioles. Continental changes the number from odd (outbound) to even (inbound).
chilango2 - April 2, 2009
I wonder who gets the first class section?
calicubfan - April 2, 2009
More often than not, coaches
There are unsubstantiated rumors that players write first class seats into their contracts.
chilango2 - April 2, 2009
When I went to Japan in 2000....
… the Cubs were on my return flight, a commercial flight. They were in business and first class; since they were going to a separate area for customs, they made the entire team wait till the rest of us came off the plane. They did not look happy about that.
Al Yellon - April 2, 2009
i love learning new random info like that
and i’m not even being silly. stuff like that is very interesting.
halfblindcubbiegirl - April 2, 2009
Yes
Except for the Orioles, which changes if it’s inbound or outbound.
chilango2 - April 2, 2009
That site is WILD!!
How’d you know their flight #?
calicubfan - April 2, 2009
I can give you flight numbers for pretty much all MLB teams
The Rockies, Rangers, Tigers and Angels have private jets with “ambiguous” flight#s though.
chilango2 - April 2, 2009
Can you get me the flight number of Soriano's private plane?
Thanks.
daver - April 2, 2009
No
But I can find you a registration number, if he does indeed have a plane and is registered to him or to his tax ID number.
chilango2 - April 2, 2009
Wow, impressive.
daver - April 2, 2009
Impressive/creepy
But interesting nonetheless.
Brett Taylor - April 3, 2009
Private planes as in...
…independent, unmarked jets?
calicubfan - April 2, 2009
Look at the Tigers' plane
through Airliners.net.
chilango2 - April 2, 2009
Thats crazy!
I thought the Dallas Mavs were the only pro team w/ their own jet. They have a 757 that I hear is totally decked out
calicubfan - April 2, 2009
Here's Cuban's cherry 767
And it’s a beaut.
chilango2 - April 2, 2009
That would've looked sweet with a big Cubs logo on the side.
daver - April 2, 2009
Can you get a pic of the Angels plane?
calicubfan - April 2, 2009
Pay no mind to the photo's caption
This plane carries the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim California U.S.A.
chilango2 - April 2, 2009
That site is like plane porn.
daver - April 2, 2009
It is
If we’re obsessive about the Cubs, that community takes that hobby very seriously.
chilango2 - April 2, 2009
True.
I note on the radar on that site, big storms heading through the midwest — that must be what’s heading to NYC tomorrow.
Al Yellon - April 2, 2009
They have to share it with a hockey team?!
Fail.
daver - April 2, 2009
Uh, right now that hockey team could outpitch them
and perhaps outhit them too. Check the standings…
Thank Mike Illich, owner of both teams…
Zeke - April 2, 2009
Maybe a little of the Red Wings winning magic can rub off on the Tigers.
I wouldn’t mind seeing Detroit rebound this season – that area really needs a pick me up.
daver - April 3, 2009
Don't sports teams get their own flights?
I can’t imagine a whole team cramming into a 757 with other folks on board. If they had a charter flight for themselves, I’d think the plane would be there waiting 4 them.
calicubfan - April 2, 2009
Of course
Flight #9907 is a charter. Only Cubs players, coaches, management and selected media get to travel on it.
chilango2 - April 2, 2009
I love that site
flying into Newark? Interesting..
Chanman25 - April 2, 2009
The reason for flying into EWR is simple:
United has ground ops there and the plane will be used for a different flight shortly after the Cubs land—most probably to the West Coast.
chilango2 - April 2, 2009
yeah your right
Newark is cheaper too…
Chanman25 - April 2, 2009
Bring. On. The. Yankees!
cubswynn - April 2, 2009
I could be completely wrong
but if Patton came from the Rockies organization, and Colorado is interested in Gaudin, wouldn’t the easiest thing to do be to swap the two, giving the Cubs the full rights to Patton?
Bill Potter - April 2, 2009
That makes WAY too much sense.
I’m quite certain there’s some arcane, poorly worded MLB regulation forbidding it.
daver - April 2, 2009
The Cubs would have to give more than Gaudin
I think the Rockies would want more than Gaudin for the rights to Patton. Gaudin just seems lost, maybe he’ll find it again but ever since his injury last year he’s been really bad.
jeff_pico - April 2, 2009
I would agree.
I think it’ll take another player, but nothing too significant, IMO. But starting with Gaudin and a Minor League-roster filler for Patton makes far too much sense to me.
Bill Potter - April 2, 2009
It's more than that.
Gaudin has a $2 million contract that the Rockies might not want.
Al Yellon - April 2, 2009
If you had told me five months ago
That not only will the Cubs be trying to move Chad Gaudin, but also that they’d have to EAT some of his measly $2 million contract, I would have eaten my hat. And I don’t wear a hat.
Brett Taylor - April 3, 2009
I think the Cubs could eat some of that if they had to.
Besides, it seems like O’Dowd and Hendry have a decent relationship after the Marquis-Vizcaino deal.
Bill Potter - April 3, 2009
blanket finish
Got a kick from hearing Piniella say that the four relievers are headed for a “blanket finish” after the NYY series. Had to look it up even though I worked at Sportsman’s and Hawthorne as a kid.
wccubfan - April 3, 2009
For those of us not familiar with that term...
… what’s the origin and meaning?
Al Yellon - April 3, 2009
Google is your friend
halfblindcubbiegirl - April 3, 2009
Yes, I could have Googled it, too.
But thanks for doing it for me. Interesting use of the language; I had always thought “photo finish” was the term used for such an ending.
Al Yellon - April 3, 2009
I'd never heard it before either
and curiousity got the better of me.
halfblindcubbiegirl - April 3, 2009
Piniella
I thought it was interesting after I finished the new book about Piniella that Ms. Jacobsen recently wrote. Apparently, he is or was into race horses. Makes sense
that he would make a horse racing reference.
wccubfan - April 3, 2009
i like trades with
teams from colorado now
get josh mcdaniels involved
tim815 - April 3, 2009
That makes
too much sense.
Clark Addison - April 2, 2009
wow I'm excited for the season to start
I’m also really pumped for this Yankees mini-series. My entire family roots for the Yankees, so hopefully we kick their butts and I have bragging rights.
nji232 - April 2, 2009
I'm going to Opening Day in San Diego on Monday...
…and they’re playing the Dodgers. No doubt I’ll get some shit talking from the LA fans about October’s 3 and out.
calicubfan - April 2, 2009
See if you can talk to Peavy
nji232 - April 2, 2009
I just got an
email from DirecTV and they will have MLB Extra Innings free preview April 6-12. Those of you who don’t get CSN will be able to watch those 3 games free.
sue369 - April 2, 2009
CAN on DTW is Ch 665.
there are ways to dance with DTV to not miss any games on CSN w/o the package. I have posted them before, if interested email me timothy.coyle76 at gmail
Cubbie-Tim - April 2, 2009
YES NETWORK.....
Announced yesterday that they will have coverage of both Fri/ Sat games ….If you have Directv you should be all set…Yes it looks like bad weather in the Bronx .
cubs north - April 2, 2009
Spring Training
Al, it’s time to shorten or end Spring Training. Giving out nicknames to Rule 5 draftees that have never pitched above A ball….you’re getting slap happy. Or maybe it’s just Opening Day fever….
krummy12 - April 3, 2009
C'mon now...every ballplayer deserves a nickname.
daver - April 3, 2009
I didn't give him that nickname.
Someone else here did, in one of the game threads. I think it was one of the games he pitched in relief of Sean Marshall. You know, two generals…
Al Yellon - April 3, 2009
Agreed...in part
But they have to be earned. Otherwise, if you just give them out like candy, it’s the Costanza / T-Bone / Coco episode.
And “The General” is too easy for Patton. If he makes a significant contribution, going from A-ball to the pennant race or more, he needs something better.
krummy12 - April 3, 2009
Yeah, maybe some of us are jumping on the gun on Patton.
But, FWIW, we’re not alone – Lou and RJ see something special in him, too. And, granted, The General isn’t particularly imaginative. But sometimes nicknames just come about organically. I call Derrek Lee “DLee,” which is pretty much the epitome of an unimaginative nickname. But if it sticks, it sticks.
daver - April 3, 2009
Koyie Hill
Haven’t seen anything, but is he going to be anyone’s “personal catcher” or will he just start on an as needed basis?
kanderber - April 3, 2009
It's doubtful he'll be a personal catcher for anyone.
I don’t think any of the Cubs pitchers roll that way.
daver - April 3, 2009
Agreed.
Hill will back up Geo, probably catching (on average) about a game a week, maybe starting 20-25 games a year. Don’t forget that when the Cubs play at Detroit or at the Cell, Soto could DH, keeping his bat in the lineup.
Al Yellon - April 3, 2009
Sounds good to me.
daver - April 3, 2009
Ah, the 'Sunday Catcher'
And won’t Z DH?
