Just in case nobody has figured this out yet… Heilman>Cotts vs LHBs… Marmol>Cotts vs LHBs… Gregg>Cotts vs LHBs. Bringing in Cotts as a LOOGY is going to bring bad results this year.
Not sucky… just unconventional. I’m optimistic about Heilman, Marmol and Gregg, and Guzman and Cotts if they’re used right. But the lack of a true LOOGY means there shouldn’t be unnecessary substituting for the RHPs… they’re full inning guys
Cotts has been a non asset since coming here. Aardsma has issues, but he’s still got something to work with. Cotts gets less hate than he should, actually. He’s not a reliable reliever whether it’s against LHBs or RHBs… he hasn’t been effective against LHBs since the Sox World Series year.
If you go to the mobile one you can’t. The mobile one never crashes and loads quickly, while I’ve had numerous problems with the full site version (really slow, crashes).
if he doesn’t suck, they have the right guy up there… I’m not expecting much from Hill, Fontenot, Miles… maybe if they get to Soriano and they pull Byrdak, the Cubs will get a favorable matchup with Hoff or Dome
he’s going to bat anyway in the next half inning if the Cubs are going to win…. you could have used Hoff instead and then used Dome as a defensive replacement… either way… Marmol would have only been needed for three very important outs… so your concern about overuse wouldn’t have been an issue.
Wasn't the whole point of keeping Marmol in his old role
that he could come in and get the tougher outs, regardless of what inning they fell in? You know, like the 2-3-4 hitters in the 10th inning of a tie game?
Whether it’s Game 2 or Game 162, you cannot let winnable games slip through your fingers. It’s like watching a kid take one bite out of his dinner and saying he doesn’t want any more. Very wasteful.
The Astros’ bullpen was pretty good tonight, with the exception of one pitch from LaToya. I’m not going to get stressed about a 3-2 loss in Game No. 2.
It’s not Cotts fault… and not Gregg’s fault that he was given that situation. He did exactly as expected… he’s a flyball/strikeout pitcher. He got a flyball and then Keppinger got lucky. The blame goes on whoever let Cotts stay in to face Ivan Rodriguez and Lance Berkman when there were much better options… pretty much everyone down in the pen save Patton…. including Vizcaino. Kudos to Cotts for getting out of a jam in the previous inning… but he’s much too weak of a pitcher to face that many batters with the game on the line.
a slick fielding backup SS, dont really care if he bats .100 on the year. I laughed at the Twins for signing Nick Punto @ 4.5 mil per year, but I would take him over Miles. Its early, but I dont think Miles fits this team as well as Jim Hendry thinks
He got a fly ball and then he got a medium-sharp grounder. That’s exactly what he wanted. Unfortunately, it didn’t go to an infielder.
Them’s the breaks. Rest assured the Cubs probably will lose at least one more game this season like that, and they’ll probably win a few like that, too.
People were complaining about Marmol being overworked last year. No time to start that again so early this year.
tie goes to the runner!

Brocail.
No need for Sori to give anything to Hoff. Sori can do it himself.
drewishdrewid - April 7, 2009

jameslcrockett - April 7, 2009
Three things I've gathered tonight
1. Theriot is not a base stealer
2. Miles isn’t a SS
3. that jackass Valverde OWNS the Cub hitters
Itchy - April 7, 2009
Agreed on all three parts
kevinbreit - April 7, 2009
#1. Duh
Emelie - April 7, 2009

Wandy, Sampson and all the other houston pitchers fair pretty well against us. At Minute Maid Atleast
bheidge - April 7, 2009
#3. Duh
Clutche - April 7, 2009
Also
Theriot picked a bad pitch to go on. High fastball outside, practically a pitch out
bheidge - April 7, 2009
See? Now THIS is what I like...
Sori coming up? (OUR GUY) – oh shit, we gotta take the pitcher out.
Love the fear… :)
malicedoom - April 7, 2009
so far I have to say
I am not entirely enthused with Miles.

jameslcrockett - April 7, 2009
dood
what is your problem? Cotts performed VERY well tonight.
drewishdrewid - April 7, 2009
ok...
what do you want to bet that Heilman, Marmol and Gregg will ALL have BAAs vs LHBs lower than Cotts at the end of the year?
jameslcrockett - April 7, 2009
nothing
because I don’t care about that stat. If Cotts gets runners out and saves runs, I’ve got nothing to complain about, and neither do you.
drewishdrewid - April 7, 2009

Chanman25 - April 7, 2009
who would you pitch?
Vizciano?
drewishdrewid - April 7, 2009
True
Chanman25 - April 7, 2009
yup
i’d much rather have Vizcaino up there than Cotts against IROD… he’s pathetic against RHPs… pretty good against weak LHPs like Cotts.
jameslcrockett - April 7, 2009
ummm...
there’s this guy named Marmol and this other guy named Gregg, first name Kevin… I think you’ve heard of them.
jameslcrockett - April 7, 2009
after all the bitching on this board
about overusing Marmol?
Gregg is coming in to pitch; it’ll be interesting to see if he can go more than one inning. Modern closers don’t tend to do that.
drewishdrewid - April 7, 2009
doesn't matter
if you’re that worried… just send them up there for three outs and then wait until the next half inning to pinch hit with Dome.
jameslcrockett - April 7, 2009
Dome
who hit under 200 in the last quarter of the year? I like Dome too, and I want him to succeed, but you sure make some interesting choices.
drewishdrewid - April 7, 2009
dude..
he’s going to bat anyway in the next half inning if the Cubs are going to win…. you could have used Hoff instead and then used Dome as a defensive replacement… either way… Marmol would have only been needed for three very important outs… so your concern about overuse wouldn’t have been an issue.
jameslcrockett - April 7, 2009
Marmol
doesn’t do so hot on multiple days of play, so we’re told.
drewishdrewid - April 7, 2009
i don't know you

bheidge - April 7, 2009

drewishdrewid - April 7, 2009
I'd rather have Sori in the game in case he needs to make a play at the plate.
zevkalman - April 7, 2009
just what i was thinking
RightFieldSucks - April 7, 2009
I think it is more about

JimboJet - April 7, 2009
Gregg eh?
Hmmm. Seems like this is the type of situation u draw up for Marmol
TheTruth11 - April 7, 2009
Last year Lou works him too much, now not enough this year
No pleasing you folks :)
RightFieldSucks - April 7, 2009
The problem last year
was that Lou used him in spots he had no use being in. This is prime Marmol territory
TheTruth11 - April 7, 2009
Wasn't the whole point of keeping Marmol in his old role
that he could come in and get the tougher outs, regardless of what inning they fell in? You know, like the 2-3-4 hitters in the 10th inning of a tie game?

Good play there
Chanman25 - April 7, 2009
I thought that ball was gone.
halfblindcubbiegirl - April 7, 2009
Not center field at Minute Maid
kevinbreit - April 7, 2009
by the sound
it sounded gone…
halfblindcubbiegirl - April 7, 2009
Is Gregg a fly ball or ground ball pitcher?
kevinbreit - April 7, 2009
flyball
tootle - April 7, 2009
That's bad news
kevinbreit - April 7, 2009
IW

drewishdrewid - April 7, 2009

Clutch16 - April 7, 2009
Oh please don't walk home the winning run...
Hilary Lee - April 7, 2009
You said it,
we were all thinking it. Knock on wood time.
Schwa - April 7, 2009
Knocked
Hilary Lee - April 7, 2009
bases loaded
Chanman25 - April 7, 2009
a double play would be fan-friggin-tastic
halfblindcubbiegirl - April 7, 2009
gotta love it
gut-cluching baseball on the second day of the season. :D
drewishdrewid - April 7, 2009
Too true.
TheTruth11 - April 7, 2009
Where did THAT miss?
TheTruth11 - April 7, 2009

Chanman25 - April 7, 2009
OH PLEASE!

drewishdrewid - April 7, 2009

bheidge - April 7, 2009
silence
Clutche - April 7, 2009
really
After two games?
Chanman25 - April 7, 2009
game over
bheidge - April 7, 2009
So....
Who wants to get a SS now?
Hilary Lee - April 7, 2009
game over.
drewishdrewid - April 7, 2009
grrrrr
tim815 - April 7, 2009
meh...
Oh well good game
Chanman25 - April 7, 2009
True
Get ’em tomorrow.
Not Bruce Froemming - April 7, 2009
Blech. Too early in the season for this.
JimboJet - April 7, 2009
uggghhh
couple hits with eyes….that’s baseball
go get ’em tomorrow
Gibbon Jockey - April 7, 2009
Well
there goes teh chance to be 162-0.
Damn. I’m bummed.
halfblindcubbiegirl - April 7, 2009
lol!
Emelie - April 7, 2009
agreed
Thought it was our year too!! Damn those pesky astros!!
Chanman25 - April 7, 2009
WTNY
Clutch16 - April 7, 2009
do what?
halfblindcubbiegirl - April 7, 2009
Wait 'til next year :P
Clutch16 - April 7, 2009
Oooh
wow. I’m slow tonight.
halfblindcubbiegirl - April 7, 2009
OK that sucks
Emelie - April 7, 2009
Unlucky.
Two weak grounders through the hole in the 10th, one of which shattered a bat. Oh well.
Schwa - April 7, 2009
Its the second game of the season
Chill the f out stros
cubsonWGN4ever - April 7, 2009
hahahha
JimboJet - April 7, 2009
they did seem
a little excited. but then, how many games are they really going to win?
drewishdrewid - April 7, 2009
This is
What happens when you go like 1-18 in spring training
Hilary Lee - April 7, 2009
Wasted
a good start from Dempster. Oh well could be worse, could have gotten crushed by San Francisco.
bheidge - April 7, 2009
who got crushed by SF?
halfblindcubbiegirl - April 7, 2009
Brew Crew
TheTruth11 - April 7, 2009
they kicker is
Lincecum’s line was 3 IP 3 ER
bheidge - April 7, 2009
why did he only go 3?
is he hurt?
halfblindcubbiegirl - April 7, 2009
lots of pitches
he threw 70+ in 3 innings. I dont think he got hurt, must have been on a pitch count
bheidge - April 7, 2009
wow
someone said he looked off earlier… daver i think was watching the game.
halfblindcubbiegirl - April 7, 2009
Nice by Demp
But without a little more offense…well, game like this’ll happen
chitownhawkeye - April 7, 2009
Good pitch to hit?
and got it? Dude you busted you bat on that, you got lucky.
bheidge - April 7, 2009
the astros are not known for their ability to make sense
halfblindcubbiegirl - April 7, 2009
Yeah, that is the upside of this game, we know Demp still has it.
JimboJet - April 7, 2009
the pen
pitched well in general, too. Not bad.
drewishdrewid - April 7, 2009
General????
Patton didn’t pitch :P
Chanman25 - April 7, 2009
Concerning Loss
Whether it’s Game 2 or Game 162, you cannot let winnable games slip through your fingers. It’s like watching a kid take one bite out of his dinner and saying he doesn’t want any more. Very wasteful.
CaliCub - April 7, 2009
I don't know about concerning.
We still struggle with runs sometimes.
drewishdrewid - April 7, 2009
wandy is the kind of lefty
i’ve always seen the cubs struggle with.
halfblindcubbiegirl - April 7, 2009
Relax
The Astros’ bullpen was pretty good tonight, with the exception of one pitch from LaToya. I’m not going to get stressed about a 3-2 loss in Game No. 2.
Not Bruce Froemming - April 7, 2009
heh
I was calling him “Latrine” myself.
CaliCub - April 7, 2009
I know
it is frustrating that we can score ten runs in one game and then only one in the next.
drewishdrewid - April 7, 2009
A little bit
But the Cubs haven’t scored 10 runs in a game yet, anyway. :)
Not Bruce Froemming - April 7, 2009
Let's take it easy.
Frustrating? Absolutely. But seriously. Relax.
TheTruth11 - April 7, 2009
I'm still in "football mode"
Where every game matters and it’s “go out there and kill kill kill, smash ’em in the mouth and run over ’em”, etc..
CaliCub - April 7, 2009
the only bad thing about this loss
is that we won’t he above .500 the entire season
Chanman25 - April 7, 2009
He=we
Chanman25 - April 7, 2009
Kind of a bummer that Cotts got the L
shouldn’t that go on Gregg?
halfblindcubbiegirl - April 7, 2009
inhereited
runner.
drewishdrewid - April 7, 2009
Ah
Okay.
halfblindcubbiegirl - April 7, 2009
Nope
It’s not Cotts fault… and not Gregg’s fault that he was given that situation. He did exactly as expected… he’s a flyball/strikeout pitcher. He got a flyball and then Keppinger got lucky. The blame goes on whoever let Cotts stay in to face Ivan Rodriguez and Lance Berkman when there were much better options… pretty much everyone down in the pen save Patton…. including Vizcaino. Kudos to Cotts for getting out of a jam in the previous inning… but he’s much too weak of a pitcher to face that many batters with the game on the line.
jameslcrockett - April 7, 2009
Didn't ask for a disertation
just wondered why the decision went that way…
halfblindcubbiegirl - April 7, 2009
Well I'm out for the night
take it easy!
Chanman25 - April 7, 2009
sigh.
I was going to post my newest find of Erin for the Hoff. Twill have to wait for another day…
drewishdrewid - April 7, 2009
time from some offense tomorrow
Milton still doesnt have an average
bheidge - April 7, 2009
Sure wish Theriot stayed put instead of trying to steal
giving Milton a chance to knock him in…
CaliCub - April 7, 2009
right
see you all tomorrow!
drewishdrewid - April 7, 2009
later drew
i’m off too… been a long day.
yay for meaningful baseball on tomorrow.
halfblindcubbiegirl - April 7, 2009
How bad is Soto?
graceunderpressure - April 7, 2009
I dont think its anything serious
maybe have the next two games off
bheidge - April 7, 2009
On the bright side
If Soriano keeps up his fielding and gets tons of HR’s we’ll finally potentially get an “MVP” chant going for the first time in years :)
ak123 - April 7, 2009
We stilll can't hit Wandy
Next time, just start some bum from Iowa against him so we don’t waste a great effort by someone.
Itchy - April 7, 2009
I think this team could use
a slick fielding backup SS, dont really care if he bats .100 on the year. I laughed at the Twins for signing Nick Punto @ 4.5 mil per year, but I would take him over Miles. Its early, but I dont think Miles fits this team as well as Jim Hendry thinks
bheidge - April 7, 2009
So they lost?
Bummer. They’ll get them tomorrow.
sue369 - April 7, 2009
Yup
Good seeing you stop by
Chanman25 - April 7, 2009
Gregg is a major downgrade from Wood.
He doesn’t have that dominating fastball that Woody had.. No longer will I think the 9th inning is safe. Why didn’t Marmol come in?
Milton's Gameboard - April 7, 2009
Gregg pitched fine
He got a fly ball and then he got a medium-sharp grounder. That’s exactly what he wanted. Unfortunately, it didn’t go to an infielder.
Them’s the breaks. Rest assured the Cubs probably will lose at least one more game this season like that, and they’ll probably win a few like that, too.
People were complaining about Marmol being overworked last year. No time to start that again so early this year.
Not Bruce Froemming - April 8, 2009
+1
I like what I’ve seen from Gregg thus far.
DMCub - April 8, 2009
Cotts, Gregg and Old Style have all looked ok IMO
