The Cubs have had worse Aprils than the one in 2009. Take 1997, for example, when they started 0-14 and were 6-19 at the end of the month on their way to a 94-loss season. Or 1994, when they were 6-15 in April, lost their first 12 home games and their manager, Tom Trebelhorn, held a "fan forum" in front of the firehouse on Waveland. I could cite more examples, but you get the idea.
However, expectations for the Cubs are a little higher this year than they were in 1994 or 1997. Injuries account for part of the 10-11 start, but not all of it -- last night's loss had nothing to do with injuries.
Enough of that, I think. There have been plenty of teams that have started the season one game under .500 after the first month and come back to make the playoffs. Is a team meeting required? Lou decided to make a joke:
"Look, when you're 12th in the league in hitting, 12th in the league in pitching, 10th in the league in defense, until those numbers get better, you can have all the meetings you want," Piniella said, laughing. "We can send them to a spa. We've got to get those numbers better, and we will."
Instead of a "spa", Lou, how about using the guys you have in the right way? Incidentally, in that link, Bruce Miles adds:
Although [Bobby] Scales was sent back to Iowa, Piniella did talk of another possible roster move, but the Cubs said none was forthcoming.
Hmmm. Sounds like Lou and Jim might not be on the same page right now. I repeat what I wrote last night: if Aramis Ramirez isn't going to go on the DL, he has to be available at least to pinch-hit. Otherwise you are playing short-handed, and that might have cost the team last night's game. Onward -- this month has to be better. Right?

That's the best picture of Graham Taylor I could find. He pitched poorly in his major league debut five days ago against the Phillies. He walked six in less than four innnings; however, in his minor league career, his control was good, with only 60 walks in over 400 innings. The Cubs will need to be patient with him today.
Rich Harden has no decisions and a 1.69 ERA in two career starts vs. the Marlins, both last year, one while he was still with the A's, the other July 26 at Wrigley Field, where he struck out ten in five innings. Jeremy Hermida hit two homers that day, one off Harden and one off Sean Marshall. Harden was long gone by the time the Cubs lost that game in the 12th inning.
Today's game is back on cable, in both Chicago (CSN) and south Florida (FSN). This is the only day game today; for tonight's games see the MLB.com Mediacenter.

I enjoy the Graham Taylor picture
DTJchris - May 1, 2009
He's a strapping young chap
with striking features.

Sure hope his arms don't snap in half
However, that smile is pretty infectious.

JO NOAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!
At least one Chicago sports team loves me.
nji232 - May 1, 2009
he looked
pretty shellshocked in the presser afterward. “I kept expecting to get fouled, and it kept not happening, so I kept running…”
drewishdrewid - May 1, 2009
he is just too awesome
You can’t teach that heart and hustle.
nji232 - May 1, 2009
I go back and forth about Jo Noah
But in college and pro ball you cant deny that he brings his A game to the playoffs
El Borto - May 1, 2009
I'm gettin' to like that guy Noah
zevkalman - May 1, 2009
Personality wise (and skill level wise)
he reminds me of Denise Rodman. A guy you absolutely hate if he is on the other team, but you can’t help but like him when he is on your team because of the energy and effort he brings.
gwood - May 1, 2009
I'll just leave this for all to enjoy

Rich Harden's stats under his picture seem a bit off.
Are they Taylor’s stats? It would be great to get a quick and efficient game in from Rich, give the team the rest of the day off, and a good rest before tomorrow’s nooner game time.
dtpollitt - May 1, 2009
I am looking forward to an error free ballgame by the cubs with the offense coming around
I would hate to see another Rich Harden start wasted by an anorexic offense
cubsnlinux - May 1, 2009
those are his stats
Vs. Florida, not his stats to date for the season.
drewishdrewid - May 1, 2009
That's what I thought, too.
But if Taylor made his MLB debut 5 days ago, why would he have stats against the Cubs?
dtpollitt - May 1, 2009
well
that’s interesting.

bheidge - May 1, 2009
Here's a pic of Taylor and an unusual pre-game ritual....
Graham Taylor, the Hoppers’ ace before he was recently promoted to Jupiter, said there wasn’t anything unusual about the way he treated his arm. Well, except for one inexplicable habit.
"I shave both arms the day I pitch," he said. "Some high school buddies did it and I tried it and kind of liked it and kept going."
carmen_fanzone - May 1, 2009
It directly affects the arm's aerodynamics
as well as his reputation…
chilango2 - May 1, 2009
the later more than the former
El Borto - May 1, 2009
yeah, doesnt wearing sleeves kinda cancel out any advantages of shaving the arms
if there was any :-)
heine41 - May 1, 2009
Thank god April is over
im ready to start winning again, hopefully something clicks today
heine41 - May 1, 2009
Amen
cubswynn - May 1, 2009
Oneeee is the lonliest number...
Come on Cubs, my birthday is tomorrow! Help me out!
Hilary Lee - May 1, 2009
Okay, Taylor has walked 6, in 3.2 innings
I certainly hope patience is being preached in the clubhouse right now
BoVandy - May 1, 2009
Graham Taylor
was the guy the Cubs were rumored to be getting for Jacque Jones two years ago when Jones had been traded to the Marlins for a couple of hours.
You can relive the whole mess here.
Josh Timmers - May 1, 2009
I have to admit
I’m a little worried. Harden doesn’t get past six innings usually. Marmol can’t be used. Heilman can’t be used. Guzman probably can’t be used. Gregg probably can only go one inning. So our pen consists of the Shark and the General. That’s only six, who am I missing?
Hope it’s enough.
drewishdrewid - May 1, 2009
Gulp, Cotts.
cubswynn - May 1, 2009
oh, right.
I blocked him out.
drewishdrewid - May 1, 2009
Its a normal reaction
I still dont understand why he got chance after chance, and then they send vizcaino down.
jkobus - May 1, 2009
because he "throws"
left handed. I can think of no other reason.
gwood - May 1, 2009
Lou wants
his LOOGY. Viz simply didn’t qualify.
Now, that having been said, I think the Viz trade was a terrible one, and Lou and Jim never planned on keeping him.
drewishdrewid - May 1, 2009
My problem
is that Cotts isn’t a LOOGY. Viz probably could have been as effective against lefties as Cotts
gwood - May 1, 2009
I love baseball-reference
career versus lefthanded batters
Cotts (473 PA) .252/.335/.444/.780
Viz (967 PA) .248/.329/.438/.767
gwood - May 1, 2009
This is exaclty what makes no sense...
Cotts couldn’t get out lefties, so why is he allowed to stick around when Viz was getting outs. I really dont understand the obsession with LOOGY
jkobus - May 1, 2009
I agree
it makes no sense.
drewishdrewid - May 1, 2009
I understand the LOOGY obsession
I don’t get the obsession with Cotts, who is not a LOOGY. LOOGYs can be crucial, but only if they are, in fact, a LOOGY.
gwood - May 1, 2009
But it still comes back to the obsession
The only reason I can see for Cotts still hanging around is that Lou still thinks he can turn it around and be that LOOGY. But he has pitchers who were proving they can get lefties out just as well. If there was so much hype about LOOGY Cotts would have already been sent down for poor performance.
jkobus - May 1, 2009
Look at Cotts' strikeout numbers and LOB% from last season.
daver - May 1, 2009
Where is Vizcaino now?
Cubs farm? Another team? At home somewhere?
Jerry Mumphrey - May 1, 2009
waiting
I think.
drewishdrewid - May 1, 2009
That is answer to a question that begins with "What"
Anyone know where?
Jerry Mumphrey - May 1, 2009
jkobus - May 1, 2009
understandably so
gwood - May 1, 2009
Did the Cubs play baseball last night?
At some point I remember seeing some players in Wrigley Field, but when I changed the channel and saw Miller and Rose and Noah play their hearts out, I kinda concentrated on the action at the UC.
zevkalman - May 1, 2009
sure they did.
It was even good baseball till the 8th.
drewishdrewid - May 1, 2009
Yep.
I missed the last few innings, I was flying to San Francisco yesterday.
Vermont Cubs Fan - May 1, 2009
Prediction
Cubs win big today…typical of them…feast or famine.
9-2. Final.
Canadian Cubs Fan - May 1, 2009
Let's play the "brighter side of things" game.
I’ll start…
Hey at least this will be Rich Harden’s 5th start of the year. 25 more to go!
cubswynn - May 1, 2009
Here's a good one
Even though the Cubs are probably playing at their worst level since 2006, we’re still just a shade under .500.
drewishdrewid - May 1, 2009
We've already played in Arizona
and will have 4 Marlins games finished after this weekend. Plus we haven’t played the Pirates yet and only 3 against the Astros.
nji232 - May 1, 2009
And the division leader has played
Pittsburgh (4), Houston (3) and Washington (will be 4 at the end of the day Sunday), so they may be enjoying the fruits of that start.
Bill Potter - May 1, 2009
Yep
and a ton of overachieving from mediocre talent.
nji232 - May 1, 2009
I agree.
Our schedule to this point this year has been quite difficult, and the division leader has had a very easy schedule. We’ll see how well they do when they start playing better teams.
Vermont Cubs Fan - May 1, 2009
Whoops... reply button error...
Cards play teams over .500 in 5 of their next 6 series…
AndrewJStone - May 1, 2009
A 4 or 5 game win streak will make all this worry wort whining go away
El Borto - May 1, 2009
as long as we dont lose three in a row after that
heine41 - May 1, 2009
You are doing it wrong.
AndrewJStone - May 1, 2009
oh yeah, sorry my bad
im generally an optimist around here
heine41 - May 1, 2009
Cards play teams over .500 in 5 of their next 6 series...
AndrewJStone - May 1, 2009

heine41 - May 1, 2009
Not sure what i'd rather see
Rami back in for tonight, or Hanley still out of theirs. I’d say it’s definitely getting Aramis back tho
Cubsfanatic - May 1, 2009
we need his bat
plus, I have a mancrush, so… you know…
Please, a win!
drewishdrewid - May 1, 2009
The Cubs have only won 10 games in April
and an unlikely team is playing red hot right now. Hmm…. where have I seen this before? Oh right in 2007!
http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/schedule/index.jsp?c_id=chc&m=4&y=2007
It took sometime but the Brewers fell back down to earth and Lou figured our how to use the players he had on the roster eventually.
Right now the Cards have players putting up higher than career numbers including Barden, Duncan, and Molina, hell even LaRue has mashed in his limited at-bats.
http://stlouis.cardinals.mlb.com/stats/sortable_player_stats.jsp?teamPosCode=all&statType=2&timeFrame=1&Submit=Submit&c_id=stl&sitSplit=&venueID=&baseballScope=SL4&timeSubFrame=2009&&sortByStat=ERA
On the pitching end, Lohse has a 1.97 ERA, Franklin hasn’t given up a run in 10 IPs, and with the way the schedule is lined up, the Cards haven’t had to use a 5th starter just yet.
Everyone else in the Central is playing .500 ball. If we can’t get healthy and Lou can’t find his groove when we get to June, then I will start to worry. Oh and if the Cards are up 10-15 games and the Wild Card is out of sight, I’ll do the same. Even then, the 2006 Cards showed that if you can stumble into the playoffs, you can win the World Series.
IllinoisCubs - May 1, 2009
lots of baseball
left in the season.
drewishdrewid - May 1, 2009
Tons of fun
….remaining
Cubsfanatic - May 1, 2009
They have used a 5th Starter
at least three Times. PJ Walters for one and Mitchell Boggs for 2 starts. Their rotation consists of Wainwright, Lohse, Wellemeyer, Joel Pinerio and Boggs currently.
TheRiot Police - May 1, 2009
My apologies
I mean they’ll have to start using a 5th starter on a regular basis. The off days and Carpenter have allowed them to limit 3 starts from Boggs/Walters. If you look at Boggs/Walters minor league stats and scouting reports, there’s reason to be concerned if you are a Cards fan.
IllinoisCubs - May 1, 2009
Looks like rain
It’s raining a bit in River North right now.
Radar here.
chilango2 - May 1, 2009
Can this frigging team just get back on the right track
the starting rotation has sucked
the offense has been plagued with injuries
the bullpen blows
the bench has no depth
Soriano and Fukudome are the only two bright lights so far..Can Harden just put this team on Track today!!!!
Chanman25 - May 1, 2009

Madison Cub Fan - May 1, 2009

gwood - May 1, 2009
Marshall actually pitched really well last night
El Borto - May 1, 2009
So far, Sean Marshall and the entire starting pitching rotation has done everything asked of them for this team...
I just wish I could say the same thing about most of our position players.
santoswoodenlegs - May 1, 2009
Clearly
Marshall found out I had benched him in my fantasy league. That’s why he pitched well last night. To f me over.
Hilary Lee - May 1, 2009
I remembered that
after you left last night.
drewishdrewid - May 1, 2009
The strange thing is..
I had Dallas Braden going earlier that day (yeah, this is a really deep league) and Guzman also pitched for me. Because of what they did, Marshall’s ERA and K/9 would have actually hurt me. His WHIP and K/BB would have really helped though…
Hilary Lee - May 1, 2009
yeah i thought about this as well last night
heine41 - May 1, 2009
eh, the starting rotation hasn't been as great as it was last year
Zambrano, Harden, and Demp are off to decent starts but aren’t anywhere close to their potential
Chanman25 - May 1, 2009
yep.
And Dempster pitched pretty well after he got it under control the night before. And Z was on the night before that.
drewishdrewid - May 1, 2009
Not according to BLou. He wants to send Marshall to the bullpen. Brilliant!
willie mays hayes' gloves - May 1, 2009
At the risk of disagreeing with my other selves
I think that would help the bullpen more than it would hurt the rotation. Cotts is awful (if Neal Cotts faces Joey Gathright, what happens?) and shouldn’t go near the mound. Either Samardzija or Heilman getting a chance to start and putting Marshall in the ‘pen wouldn’t be a horrible thing to try.
Shanghai Badger - May 1, 2009
I do agree
it would help the bullpen.
I’m not sure it would be worth it. You’d still only be able to throw him every other day, and you’d need another starting pitcher. I don’t see either Shark or Heilman being able to go six with regularity, do you?
drewishdrewid - May 1, 2009
Why waste
a guy who can throw 7 strong every 5th for a couple of inning a week? I just dont get it, I know the bullpen is weak, but one of the best ways to strengthen it is not to have to use it. The guy is capable of 7 good innings, taht saves at least 1 reliever and often 2.
wax eagle - May 1, 2009
I think you may have meant to reply to me
I still have concerns about Marshall’s long-term endurance. I hope I’m wrong.
In the meantime, the bullpen is a glaring weakness and needs to be addressed.
Shanghai Badger - May 1, 2009
No doubt
I think a lot of that can be addressed simply by our starters pitching longer into games. Heilman or marmol to gregg is pretty much an everyday thing as far as im concerned. Guzman, Patton and Cotts should be mop up with Samardjiza being used in long relief or occasional setup situations. I really feel like our bullpen would be good with a reliable lefty and less use.
wax eagle - May 1, 2009
The only issue that I have with that is
I’ve seen the pre-ordained 7th/8th inning blow up on more than one team — 2001 Cubs, 2007 Brewers spring to mind right away.
Your last sentence is dead-on.
Shanghai Badger - May 1, 2009
Wonder
if Jesse Orosco is still breathing….
wax eagle - May 1, 2009
I located Carmen Pignatiello last night
I could always put in a good word while Rochester is playing here in Indianapolis…
Bill Potter - May 1, 2009
Not at this point, no (on > 6 IP)
Which is why I was really surprised that Samardzija was recalled when he was.
I do think that it’s feasible that either could get to that point (stamina-wise, if not effectiveness) within a couple of weeks.
Shanghai Badger - May 1, 2009
well, ok.
So they get stretched out. Would either be good enough to balance out the loss of Marshall in the rotation?
I don’t even know how we’d tell.
drewishdrewid - May 1, 2009
I don't think that we could tell
But we’d notice an improvement in the ’pen.
Shanghai Badger - May 1, 2009
To quote Bob Swerski in regards to the Cotts-Gathright meeting
“The senseless waste of pitting these two mighty [weak] forces of nature against each other, like matter vs. anti-matter, will be a tragedy, not only for the teams involved but for our planet. All nations must band together, to ensure that such a conflageration never takes place.”
Bill Potter - May 1, 2009
Yeah, I'll go along with that
Shanghai Badger - May 1, 2009
There's no doubt that would drastically help the bullpen.
santoswoodenlegs - May 1, 2009
yeah, I mean I'm probably the guys biggest fan, he's done well
Chanman25 - May 1, 2009
I thought the rotation was doing fine.
Jerry Mumphrey - May 1, 2009
Disagree about the starting rotation.
Otherwise, yeah, lotta room for improvement thus far.
daver - May 1, 2009
eh, well the starting rotation has been servicable, but I'd like to see these ERA go down
Zambrano: 4.64
Dempster: 5.40
eh, well now that you realize it, I thought Lilly and Harden were doing much worse than they are, so its really only those two that need to get on track. my bad..
Chanman25 - May 1, 2009
And I fear for this offense, if Fontenot and Soto prove to be busts this season
and in addition to Lee’s decline and Bradley and Ramirez’s health woes, we might need to overhaul big time this off season..
Chanman25 - May 1, 2009
I'm really
not ready to talk about the offseason…
Fonty and Soto need to find their bats. Fonty’s on his way. Hopefully, Soto will be soon.
drewishdrewid - May 1, 2009
I'm not throwing in the towel on this season yet
I just have grave concerns about our offense, like everybody else does..
Chanman25 - May 1, 2009
Al....were there any teams in the last 10 years that started sub .500 in April that made the playoffs?
Clutche - May 1, 2009
Rays last year?

wax eagle - May 1, 2009

hopefully in '09 as well
Clutche - May 1, 2009
yeah, they were 10-14
through 21 games (as we are 10-11 this year), they were 8-13.
sparky39762 - May 1, 2009
And IIRC, they were below .500 as late as June
Shanghai Badger - May 1, 2009
+ 1
IllinoisCubs - May 1, 2009
After 21 games (I don't want to use April records, as the WBC screwed up the start of the season this year)
The Dodgers and Rays were the only teams to start worse in 2008 than the Cubs have this year and make the playoffs. LA was 9-12, Tampa 10-11.
In 2008, the Cubs were 15-6, Brewers, 13-8, Phillies 11-10 and Dodgers 9-12. In the AL, Boston was 14-7, Angels 12-9, White Sox 12-9 and the Rays were 10-11.

Or did you think that I just came up with that on my own?
Shanghai Badger - May 1, 2009
I didn't realize
you were the same person
gwood - May 1, 2009
He's me, I'm him, Drew's both of us.
daver - May 1, 2009
I am
the same person.
drewishdrewid - May 1, 2009
I thought so
gwood - May 1, 2009
Yeah, williemayshayesgloves would be here, too
But I’m eating lunch. Can only post so many personalities
Shanghai Badger - May 1, 2009
what are I having again?
drewishdrewid - May 1, 2009
Nothing special - just Wendy's
Shanghai Badger - May 1, 2009
what, both of her?
drewishdrewid - May 1, 2009
Hot 'n spicy redhead?
neverAcquiesce - May 1, 2009
Way better than fast food, eh?
Shanghai Badger - May 1, 2009
Ghostbusters
eswan9 - May 1, 2009
But thank you for making sure I knew!
Shanghai Badger - May 1, 2009
Echo
Echo . . . Echo
gwood - May 1, 2009
Echo
BoVandy - May 1, 2009
You mean Ecto.
The Ghostbusters vehicle was the Ecto-1.
neverAcquiesce - May 1, 2009
Ehlo?
Craig?
bheidge - May 1, 2009
Mr. Ecko?
heine41 - May 1, 2009
R.I.P.
cubswynn - May 1, 2009
If there's a steady paycheck
I’ll believe anything you say.
neverAcquiesce - May 1, 2009
I've seen shit that'll turn you white
Shanghai Badger - May 1, 2009
that's some twinkee.
drewishdrewid - May 1, 2009
Thank you, Lewis.
That was short but pointless.
neverAcquiesce - May 1, 2009
shhhhh!
do you smell something?
drewishdrewid - May 1, 2009
Yes, it's true.
This man has no dick.
neverAcquiesce - May 1, 2009
GET HER!!!
mrtobby - May 1, 2009
that's your plan?
Get her?
drewishdrewid - May 1, 2009
Only a CARPATHIAN would come back to life NOW
and choose New York City. Tasty pick…BONEHEAD! If you had BRAIN ONE in that HUGE MELON on top of your head, you would be living the SWEET LIFE out in Southern California’s BEAUTIFUL San Fernando Valley!
neverAcquiesce - May 1, 2009
It's ok!
This guy’s a sailor! This is New York! We get this guy laid, we got no trouble!
drewishdrewid - May 1, 2009
OK, she's a dog
Shanghai Badger - May 1, 2009
It's...
looking at me, Ray.
drewishdrewid - May 1, 2009
What did you do, Ray?
Shanghai Badger - May 1, 2009
Agile little Minx, innt she...
drewishdrewid - May 1, 2009
How I love Ghost Busters
This banter has cheered up my day.
Let us take this quote to todays game:
“We came, we saw, we kicked its ass!”
mrtobby - May 1, 2009
I hope GB3 comes out soon . . .
1 was in 1984 and 2 was in 1989 — couldn’t hurt, I suppose
Shanghai Badger - May 1, 2009
They're supposed to be doing one
where they’re mentoring a new generation.
My dad and I said long ago they just need to have them old, fat, and out of shape…then, all of a sudden, ghosts are back. Let Venkman be Venkman and that shit writes itself.
neverAcquiesce - May 1, 2009
Yeah, Akroyd told Steve Cochrane on WGN that he was working on it
And I agree with you – although I don’t mind the “handing the torch” idea.
Shanghai Badger - May 1, 2009
Let's show this prehistoric bitch
how we do things downtown.
neverAcquiesce - May 1, 2009
Don't cross the streams
gwood - May 1, 2009
prehistoric ^little^ bitch
neverAcquiesce - May 1, 2009
NOBODY STEPS ON A CHURCH
in MY TOWN!
drewishdrewid - May 1, 2009
oh so she's your kinda girl?
This unfortually is better than pondering today line up :)
Madison Cub Fan - May 1, 2009
Try to imagine all life as you know it stopping instantaneously and every molecule in your body exploding at the speed of light.
mrtobby - May 1, 2009
sigh. Lee in cleanup again.
BoVandy - May 1, 2009
It's better than Reed Johnson.
santoswoodenlegs - May 1, 2009
With that
I am in agreement, and I dont think it suits milton.
wax eagle - May 1, 2009
If I'm the Marlins Manager...
Soriano and Bradley won’t ever see a ball in the strike zone today.
santoswoodenlegs - May 1, 2009
yeah
after the first third of the lineup its pretty week unless soto fontenot or reed find their strokes today. I hope they can.
wax eagle - May 1, 2009
well, I hope it works.
I was REALLY hoping to see Rami back in the lineup today.
drewishdrewid - May 1, 2009
me too
he better be pinch hitting
Cubsfanatic - May 1, 2009
the fact that you have to make that argument says something about how this season has gone.
BoVandy - May 1, 2009
If Lee continues to struggle this year
what do the Cubs do with 2010 and the final year of his $65M contract?
Employee22 - May 1, 2009
nothing
unless he waives his NTC.
drewishdrewid - May 1, 2009
continuing putting him in the #3 or 4 hole would be my guess
BoVandy - May 1, 2009
Wow!
I thought Somalian pirates has an easy gig.
Employee22 - May 1, 2009
I'd rather see Hill than Soto in there today.
katie casey - May 1, 2009
I'm willing to bet, so would most people not named Lou
BoVandy - May 1, 2009
Hell I could be president of the Soto fan club........
and sadly I must admit that I agree. :(
Madison Cub Fan - May 1, 2009
Then who will back up Fonty?
eswan9 - May 1, 2009
Gulp, Soriano.
santoswoodenlegs - May 1, 2009
Gulp, is that someone we promoted from AA?
eswan9 - May 1, 2009
Sammy Gulp...
…firecracker kid with a spitfire arm. A real comer. Can pick the worm-burners with the best of ‘em. And he smokes Chesterfield’s, y’know.
daver - May 1, 2009
we manage according to our payroll
KaliCub - May 1, 2009
First of all, no
Second of all, Soto isn’t making millions at this point.
No one on this board wants Hill to become the everyday catcher (I would hope). Soto seems like he needs some time off, though.
Shanghai Badger - May 1, 2009
once again that depends
if he is hurt then sit him, if he is healthy he needs to play to get out of his funk. I believe that if he is in the lineup then he is healthy enough to play. Give him time he is just a second year player.
wax eagle - May 1, 2009
that was my only point
I like Soto but he does not look good right now. I’m more worried about Dlee and his getting lineup priveleges
KaliCub - May 1, 2009
Ah. Well, since you replied to a Hill comment
I trust you can see why I misunderstood.
Shanghai Badger - May 1, 2009
yep we're good
KaliCub - May 1, 2009
Marlins lineup
Bonifacio 3B
Maybin CF
Hermida LF
Cantu 1B
Uggla 2B
Baker C
Gload RF
Amezaga SS
Taylor P
Cubsfanatic - May 1, 2009
yeah for no
hanley??? i mean i dont want to wish a guy hurt, but i wont be said if he isnt healthy for this series.
wax eagle - May 1, 2009
Even though Amezaga killed us yesterday
I agree
bheidge - May 1, 2009
Other than Hermida and Uggla
this lineup smacks of suckitude. To quote Hammer, “Light ’em up”!
chilango2 - May 1, 2009
who the hell is Gload?
drewishdrewid - May 1, 2009
Minor character in The Lord of the Rings. Ya gotta read the footnotes.
daver - May 1, 2009
oh, wait
he was the fifth orc on the left in the Helm’s Deep scene.
drewishdrewid - May 1, 2009
Bonifacio and Maybin have speed to burn.
That’s what worries me.
daver - May 1, 2009
keep 'em off the basepaths
and they got nowhere to run to.
drewishdrewid - May 1, 2009
so does ours, so........
BoVandy - May 1, 2009
is uggla the one who had a few errors in last years all star game?
Madison Cub Fan - May 1, 2009
That's the one
Shanghai Badger - May 1, 2009
Two, yes
and in my opinion, why the game went to extras.
chilango2 - May 1, 2009
Dang, forgot "sarcasm" indicator
chilango2 - May 1, 2009
Thanks I was to lazy to look it up
Madison Cub Fan - May 1, 2009
Yup.
daver - May 1, 2009
That
was an exciting game. so many plays a the plate…
wax eagle - May 1, 2009
I guess we were just inches from feeling different
that sounds awful but you all know how last night could have been so different if Reed’s grounder would have trickled through. But it didn’t and I am not feeling this team. I posted last night that all that needs to be said could be seen on the Marmol throw to first. Our rightfielder was nowhere to be seen and not even moving to back that throw up. The cardinals will not just fade, becasue they are well coached and play the game right. The Cubs right now are just waiting for talent to kick. Refusing to make adjustments and not doing the little things will burn you.
graceunderpressure - May 1, 2009
TWSS
for the subject line
Cubsfanatic - May 1, 2009
PASS As that is one of the better TWSS in a long time :)
Madison Cub Fan - May 1, 2009
Winning yesterday would have been nice, but
No one would have been thrilled about 11-10, either.
Shanghai Badger - May 1, 2009
Alright
Time to turn this thing around starting today. I would like to see Dome in there over Johnson though.
23Ryno - May 1, 2009
Johnson vs. LHP is ok
That was the plan going in.
Giving him that much time vs. RHP, however . . . .
Shanghai Badger - May 1, 2009
I'd like an explanation as to why Lou isn't putting Dome out there today...
and something other than the bullshit about lefty/lefty match ups….he’s the best healthy offensive player on team right now, and outr biggest problem has been we can’t score runs DAMMIT!.
santoswoodenlegs - May 1, 2009
LHP.
that was the plan from the get go this season. Dome Johnson platoon in center.
wax eagle - May 1, 2009
That plan included the offense not hibernating for the first month and half the roster hurt.
Before you go to war, plans are everything. Once the shooting starts, plans mean nothing.
santoswoodenlegs - May 1, 2009
no plan
survives contact with the enemy.
drewishdrewid - May 1, 2009
So speaketh General SWL
eswan9 - May 1, 2009
Because Johnson should get to play, too
Shanghai Badger - May 1, 2009
TWHS???
wax eagle - May 1, 2009
Approved.
daver - May 1, 2009
Indeed
Shanghai Badger - May 1, 2009
ive tried that line before
KaliCub - May 1, 2009
Haven't we all?
Shanghai Badger - May 1, 2009
Tell me when he starts to then....
cause what he’s been doing so far should not fall under the category of “playing baseball”
santoswoodenlegs - May 1, 2009
I don't disagree
But he should not have been playing vs. RHP, anyway. That’s on Piniella.
Shanghai Badger - May 1, 2009
he has played
Terribly
BoVandy - May 1, 2009
at the plate. I'll qualify that
his defense has been his usual top notch
BoVandy - May 1, 2009
Fukudome's defense isn't much worse....
and his bat is light years better.
santoswoodenlegs - May 1, 2009
Must suck to be Bobby Scales...
Gets told he’s (finally) being called up. Packs his bags, surely phones everyone in his phone book, gets to Wrigley, only to be told that he’s headed back to Iowa. Poor guy.
kanderber - May 1, 2009
I think
he knew it was a just in case. And hendry has said he will get a shot this year. I hope he does, seems like a good kid and I wanna see him up with the big boys.
wax eagle - May 1, 2009
we''ll see him before the year is out
Chanman25 - May 1, 2009
speaking of Reed
Johnson has a new blog entry up
wax eagle - May 1, 2009
that the one
about his car?
drewishdrewid - May 1, 2009
Thats the one,
sorry if you have seen it already
wax eagle - May 1, 2009
no worries.
drewishdrewid - May 1, 2009
my fav so far was the one about the catch
Madison Cub Fan - May 1, 2009
Seriously
demp said he was gonna buy the guy culvers and he didn’t get it…
wax eagle - May 1, 2009
maybe that's why
Reed hasn’t hit. Someone get this guy a cheeseburger!
drewishdrewid - May 1, 2009
Pepsi, no Coke
Shanghai Badger - May 1, 2009
I could go from some
Jimmy Johns right about now…(wonders when the one in Chattanooga is going to open)…
wax eagle - May 1, 2009
Just noticed that Lee is batting 4th...
Lou, WTF? I mean, seriously Lou? WTF?
kanderber - May 1, 2009
Anyone
know where Lee batted in the lineup in ’05
23Ryno - May 1, 2009
3
BoVandy - May 1, 2009
3rd, but was batting sixth until he began his surge, it started
Patterson CF
Walker 2b
Garciaparra SS
Ramirez 3b
Burnitz RF
Lee 1b
Chanman25 - May 1, 2009
Thanks guys
23Ryno - May 1, 2009
oddly enough, the day that Dusty swapped Nomar and Lee in the lineup
was the night Garciaparra tore his groin. Who knows, if it weren’t for that change, would we never have had the Neifi era?
Chanman25 - May 1, 2009
I know
but who would you bat fourth? Fontenot? Soto? Miles?
No one tell Lou I said that last one. Don’t want him getting ideas.
drewishdrewid - May 1, 2009
with this lineup? Bradley
as painful as that is to say
BoVandy - May 1, 2009
and yes I'm aware Lou said Bradley wouldn't bat 4th anymore
but he’s the best bat (supposedly) in the lineup
BoVandy - May 1, 2009
I don't
want even think of Miles in the cleanup spot
23Ryno - May 1, 2009
I don't like thinking of Miles being in the lineup at all
but Lou forces me to almost every day lately
BoVandy - May 1, 2009
Here's a Rami update from Santo
“I do believe that Ramirez will be back this weekend. Probably. Hopefully.”
Yeesh.
Shanghai Badger - May 1, 2009
Gotta love good ole Ronny
23Ryno - May 1, 2009
Clear as mud, Ronny. Clear as mud.
daver - May 1, 2009
which means he's spoken to no one
and he’s just using wishful thinking.
BoVandy - May 1, 2009
At least he knows they're playing the Marlins
I think he does, anyway.
Shanghai Badger - May 1, 2009
Someone should verify that
BoVandy - May 1, 2009
I think he just called them the "Devil Marlins."
daver - May 1, 2009
at
least he can tell they are from florida…
wax eagle - May 1, 2009
again, someone should verify that
BoVandy - May 1, 2009
AHHHHHHHH!!!
Judd Sirott’s voice just made me jump out of my seat!
daver - May 1, 2009
why isn't Pat starting the game?
or is Sirott just handling the pre-game?
BoVandy - May 1, 2009
Just the pre-game.
I hope.
I think he’s been doing these pre-game interviews regularly.
daver - May 1, 2009
and he's still
bad at them.
drewishdrewid - May 1, 2009
thats why I no longer listen to the pregame show
Madison Cub Fan - May 1, 2009
Piniella sounds very tired on the pre-game show
I’d rather he sounded pissed off.
Shanghai Badger - May 1, 2009
I agree.
He’s practically slurring his words.
daver - May 1, 2009
only caught the end of it.
Ron sounds beat down too.
drewishdrewid - May 1, 2009
The comment about not having any options
Pisses me off.
Whose fault is that, Lou? You got your lefties.
Shanghai Badger - May 1, 2009
Yeah
Sorta how I sound when I have to talk to my idiot boss.
chilango2 - May 1, 2009
Lineup 3-7
batting .118, .189, .216, .109, .178
Cubsfanatic - May 1, 2009
So you're sayin' there's a chance.
daver - May 1, 2009
And if all those guys are batting those averages in a month
I’ll buy you the Brooklyn Bridge.
Not Bruce Froemming - May 1, 2009
they've gotta even out sometime
I predict bats of fire
Cubsfanatic - May 1, 2009
Might as well
start today.
Not Bruce Froemming - May 1, 2009
ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
BoVandy - May 1, 2009
Was that '97 start
the one where the kid vowed to stop talking until zthe Cubs won? I remember he got permission from his parents and teachers so he wouldn’t have to speak at school.
neverAcquiesce - May 1, 2009
I vow to not sniff glue until the Cubs are in first place.
Shanghai Badger - May 1, 2009
I tried that.
But the Glue’s got me man…it’s got me
BoVandy - May 1, 2009
Superglue?
Shanghai Badger - May 1, 2009
Tried Elmer's but was pretty dissatisfied.
neverAcquiesce - May 1, 2009
TWSS
Shanghai Badger - May 1, 2009
Looks like I picked the wrong day to give up ludes.
daver - May 1, 2009
In the immortal words of Harry Caray...
Hello everybody!
Jimmyeatworld - May 1, 2009
Hi James
chilango2 - May 1, 2009
Hey Chil...
Jimmyeatworld - May 1, 2009

drewishdrewid - May 1, 2009

Jimmyeatworld - May 1, 2009
Jimmy wants a win.
Jimmy wants a win badly.
daver - May 1, 2009
That's right daver... Jimmy's gettin' upset!
Jimmyeatworld - May 1, 2009
Oh, an interview with the travelling secretary.
RIVETING.
daver - May 1, 2009
he's the unrecognized hero of this team
BoVandy - May 1, 2009
holy god this story is dull
BoVandy - May 1, 2009
Something about a tree limb?
daver - May 1, 2009
and Robin Yount.
drewishdrewid - May 1, 2009
It's
this guy. Riveting indeed.
chilango2 - May 1, 2009
George Costanza??
LT - May 1, 2009
That was my thought.
I think he was Assistant to the Traveling Secretary, though.
neverAcquiesce - May 1, 2009
Yep
But close enough to bring it up. Lets hope the Cubs uniforms don’t shrink up in the rain!
LT - May 1, 2009
Niiiiiiice.
“Mattingly just split his pants!”
neverAcquiesce - May 1, 2009
Did he just say Aramis has a sore wrist now?
daver - May 1, 2009
I'm sorry
I just tune his voice out like white noise.
drewishdrewid - May 1, 2009
Sorry, I missed it.
(Which also could apply to the Ghostbusters/GBII quotes)
Shanghai Badger - May 1, 2009
Hopefully, I just dreamed it.
And by “dream” I mean “nightmare.”
daver - May 1, 2009
Hoff leaving those EA pics lying around?
neverAcquiesce - May 1, 2009
Ohhhhh!!!
daver - May 1, 2009
Hey-O!
Shanghai Badger - May 1, 2009
Cubs line-up out yet?
Jimmyeatworld - May 1, 2009
indeed
Cubsfanatic - May 1, 2009
It's up in the thread....but you probably don't want to look.
santoswoodenlegs - May 1, 2009
that's not too bad...
Jimmyeatworld - May 1, 2009
from chilango
Soriano LF
Theriot SS
Bradley RF
Lee 1B
Johnson CF
Soto C
Miles 2B
Fontenot 3B
Harden P
Cubsfanatic - May 1, 2009
Thanks
Sorry, I stepped out for a smoke. It’s still raining out.
chilango2 - May 1, 2009
So much for Bradley hitting low in the order, eh?
neverAcquiesce - May 1, 2009
Rich Harden has a better batting average than 6 guys in our starting lineup
SOB
BoVandy - May 1, 2009
lol I noticed that too
he’s to be feared
Cubsfanatic - May 1, 2009
CHICAGO CUBS BASEBALL
