Cubs Minor League Wrap -- May 10

If you missed it in the comments from yesterday's wrap, in yesterday's Daytona Cubs game, there was an incident where outfielders Tyler Colvin and Tony Campana collided going after a ball in the left-center gap. Both were taken off the field in stretchers and hospitalized after the game. The good news is, according the the D-Cubs official website, is that both players are expected to make full recoveries.  But expect trips to the DL for both players for the time being.

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs tarred and feathered the Memphis Redbirds, 9-2.

Mitch Atkins got his season back on track as he had a strong seven-inning start. Atkins allowed two runs in the first inning, and then shut the Redbirds the rest of the way.  Atkins gave up four hits and walked one while striking out six.

Jason Waddell threw a perfect inning of relief, for those of you on the Jason Waddell watch. He didn't record a strikeout.

Center fielder Sam Fuld did the most damage for the I-Cubs today as he was 3 for 4 with a triple and four runs scored. Fuld walked once and stole two bases.

Catcher Chris Robinson also had a 3 for 4 day.  Robinson had a double, scored once and had three RBI. Robinson also stole a base.

First baseman Doug Deeds was 2 for 4 with two doubles. Right fielder Brad Snyder hit his seventh home run on the season, a solo shot in the sixth inning. Snyder went 1 for 3 and scored once.

Third baseman Matt Camp hit his first home run on the year.  Camp went 1 for 4 with two runs scored and the one RBI.

Tennessee Smokies

Had time to call their mothers today because they didn't play.

Daytona Cubs

Had a needed off-day after the near-tragedy last night.

Peoria Chiefs

The Chiefs crowned the Ft. Wayne TinCaps, 5-2.

Starter Aaron Shafer saw his record go to 4-1 today with a good five-inning start. Shafer allowed one run on a first-inning solo home run, and then shut down the TinCaps the rest of the way. Shafer gave up five hits and three walks to the TinCaps and struck out three.

Erik Hamren gave up a run on two hits over an inning and a third, but managed to record his sixth save anyway. Hamren struck out two.

Shortstop Junior Lake was 3 for 4 with a double. Lake scored twice and had one RBI. DH Nelson Perez had a 2 for 4 afternoon with a double and two runs scored.

Center fielder Drew Rundle homered in a 2 for 3 day. Rundle had three RBI and walked once as well.

Left fielder Josh Harrison was 2 for 5 with a double and a stolen base.

Harrison was the most impressive player in the last two games.

Today that ground-rule double should have been a triple but it got caught in the wall. Also, two other times he hit the ball right on the nose—once he was robbed by the diving third baseman and the second was a line drive right to somebody. His average is up there!

Jeff Stevens

Well, I just returned from a weekend in Des Moines and took in the I-Cubs game saturday night against Memphis. Smarge, I can’t figure out. It seems with some batters he is completly there and dominates them, then amazingly the next hitter he seems lost and his control is iffy at best. Anyways I got to see Jeff Steven’s pitch one inning and he truly deserves a shot in our pen. Steven’s pitched confidently moving the ball in and out, successfully tying up the three batters he did face and helped get the game into extra innings. Although I sat in the outfield, I figure his velocity was in the high 80’s low 90’s with decent movement. Kevin hart eventually ended the game the losing pitcher. I hope this helps a little Josh77, I would summerize his stuff as a young Mike Stanton? I will say though he seems very confident and has a great presence on the mound.

Thanks

Every bit helps. Thanks.

Fuld has been in a slump

I checked the box score before you posted and was relieved he had a good game

On a semi-related note I discovered that poor Adam Greenberg is playing for the team in Bridgeport CT in the independent Patriot League. As it happens I have never been to a minor league game and wanted to go this year to see the Newark Bears and they are also in the Patriot League. The Newark Bears are famous for having a lot of former major league players ( and would be ones) trying to make a come back. This years roster included Bobby Hill and Bobby Brownlie plus Keith Faulke, Shawn Chacon, Carl Everett, Jay Gibbens , Michael Tucker and Rob Mackowiak. Daryl Ward started the season there. Tickets are 10 bucks and I can get half off if I take NJ Transit which would be my only way to get there anyway. Should be interesting. I will report if I go but the Bridgeport team does not play in Newark to the last weekend in June.

That's the Atlantic League, right?
for what its worth

i’ve heard some negative things about Greenberg trying to get some of the younger dominican players to invest their signing bonuses in Greenberg’s entrepreneurial ventures….

That is weird.

On the other hand it might be an OK investment.

Oh andy yes Al the Atlantic League where MLB players who refuse to retire go to play.

it could be....

but this isn’t the impression i’ve gotten from the person whom i’ve talked with that has spent a significant amount of time with Greenberg at the minor league level

the impression i got was Greenberg was a very strong salesman and taking advantage a bit of the younger guys who had never really had money before

It’s one person’s impression, but it certainly changed my perspective on Greenberg

Are you saying Adam Greenberg...

…could turn out to be the Bernie Madoff of the Independent Patriot League?

you got it daver

i’ve confirmed he has over 70 billion in dominican signing bonuses

(sarcasm)

truthfully, i’m not sure what the endeavors were but from what i’ve been told they were at least legitimate. It wasn’t like Greenberg was just taking their money and running with it. He was investing it in his ideas, the general sense was simply that his ideas weren’t very likely to be profitable and as such instead of these guys saving money or sending it back to their families, etc, they were losing it with Greenberg

Jeff Stevens bears watching
agreed

+1

he looks good so far

11 games, 14 innings, 0.00 ERA Opp BA under 100 against him.

could make that DeRosa trade seem like a great move that many second guessed.

is he one of the pitchers we got back?
Yep

along with Gaub in AA (a lefty pitching in relief and doing very well so far) and Archer in A ball (also pitching very well thus far). Supposedly Archer has the most upside IF he can achieve better command of his pitches. So far this season he has done that but he has only been going just under 5 innings a start- which is not real good.

We won’t know for a few years if the deal was a good one. So far it has definitely helped the pitching depth of the organization but who nows if any of these guys will make it to the bigs and become actual contributors.

I'm sure you've written about this

and I’ll search in a minute to see but: How is Camp at 3rd? Could he come up and play solid defense if Rami is really out for 8 weeks? Or are we stuck with Font & Scales to fill those shoes?

I'll ask when someone goes to the I-Cubs again

I saw Camp play in Boise a few seasons ago, but he was purely a center fielder then. Since that time, they’ve decided to make him an all-around utility guy. He played a lot of second, shortstop as well as outfield before this season, but this year is the first time he’s been asked to play third base.

The problem with Camp though is that, his home run today notwithstanding, the guy has absolutely no power. His lifetime SLG in the minors is .327. He’s got great speed and you’d think he’d at least get some leg doubles, but he can’t really even manage that.

He does have a scrappiness level that goes to 13. Mike Fontenot and Ryan Theriot look at Camp and wish they could be as scrappy.

Ah okay

We don’t really need more scrap. :-P

But I’m not really worried about someone filling Rami’s shoes offensively, no one is going to do that by themselves. A lot of guys are going to have to step up for that void to be filled. But I’m not sure how long Font can hold up at 3B, even though he’s done really well today. And I’ve had a dislocated shoulder and tried to rehab to avoid surgery (not that my rehab was able to be what Rami’s will access to), I didn’t respond to rehab and had to have surgery and was shelved for 5 weeks in a sling. And it was more than 5 months before I was cleared to do anything more than basic movements. And over a year before I felt completely comfortable with the aftermath. So I’m really nervous about Rami being anything like he was.

Catcher Robinson

is hitting .390+ and is on a tear. This has been somewhat of a black hole (before Geo) in our minor league system, it’s good to see a catching prospect push to the top.

stevens

is definately ready from what I saw and posted here earlier. But as Al said and others have pointed out his splits are very lefty biased. I took the impression as him filling the role of the Neal Cotts or possibly a 2-3 inning guy. The most impressive thing I can say about him is that he has great confidence and presence. You can tell that he knows for the most part what he is trying to do with each hitter and thus far has excellent control and movement in and out.
