Anyone ever heard of this "Peavy" guy?
Seriously, Jake Peavy is, of course, a good pitcher (though his numbers this year don't show it). My prediction: with the new ownership taking over in San Diego and the continued uncertainty about Cubs ownership, Peavy will remain a Padre all year -- and likely, once the new Padres ownership takes over -- for the balance of his contract there.
The Daily Herald's Mike Spellman writes today about the 1969 Cubs (and some about the 1959 White Sox, too), and quotes Fergie Jenkins on the question of whether Leo Durocher "wore the team out":
"That's nonsense. We were ready to play all the time. We had the players to do the job. Leo Durocher wouldn't have put us out there if he didn't have the confidence in us. Sure, a lot of the guys played regularly, but we had guys on the bench who helped out. Unfortunately we didn't get it going and the Mets did."
Fergie also talks about what game he thinks turned that season sour (hint: it was a bad call in NYC) and fills in some previously-unknown details about the black cat in Shea Stadium. (I don't usually mention stuff like that, but there's something new about that incident that I did not know before.)
And, Lou throws down the 2009 version of his "Throw Freakin' Strikes" gauntlet:Piniella is looking for more than [Angel] Guzman to perform as he tries to identify enough relief pitchers on his team he can trust to have guts enough to throw strikes and endure the heat of close, late innings enough to reverse a slide that sunk the Cubs' bullpen to worst in the National League (5.65 ERA) before four good innings Sunday lifted them ahead of woeful Washington.
Piniella calls that "priority No. 1."

Jake Peavy has had a strange year. His overall numbers aren't good -- 2-4 with a 4.27 ERA, more than a run higher than his career ERA. Yet, he's also fourth in the NL in strikeouts (Rich Harden is 10th, despite throwing 12 fewer innings than anyone above him on the list). He has 10+ K's in two of his seven starts, yet his best game -- allowing only two hits and no runs in eight innings vs. the Dodgers on May 1 -- wound up a no-decision and a Padres loss when reliever Duaner Sanchez walked in the winning run in the last of the 9th. Peavy is 2-1, 2.81 in six career starts vs. the Cubs, but has a 3.68 ERA in four lifetime starts at Wrigley Field. Alfonso Soriano is 4-for-10 vs. Peavy with two HR.
Rich Harden has also had a strange year. He's struck out a lot of batters but has also been hit hard, thus the 4.83 ERA. He has never faced the Padres, and only one current member of their team -- David Eckstein, from their days together in the AL -- has faced him more than six times (3-for-15).
Today's game is on CSN Plus -- that's CLTV in Chicago, Comcast channel 285 for HD, and "check local listings" everywhere else. For today's other games see the MLB.com Mediacenter.

Why thank you.
Do I get a cake with that ?

Perfect
All the fun and none of the calories.
Doggie Stalker - May 12, 2009
did you bring enough for everyone?
Cubbie-Tim - May 12, 2009
How could you cut such a beautiful thing?
tucsoncubsfan - May 12, 2009
My best friend's fiancee

Allie - May 12, 2009
Damn that looks good.
sue369 - May 12, 2009
Just for the record
My birthday is June 21 and I plan to be in the bleachers so you could always bring the real thing,
Doggie Stalker - May 12, 2009
I got tix for that game as well
Cubbie-Tim - May 12, 2009
What a pitching matchup.
Harden vs. Peavy. It doesn’t get much better than that!
kanderber - May 12, 2009
+1 classic baseball
KaliCub - May 12, 2009
True
but thinking things like that usually means it end up as 9-8 game. :-P
Allie - May 12, 2009
with both starters out after 3
Cubbie-Tim - May 12, 2009
Lets get the bats going tonight.
Early and often!
goodstuff96 - May 12, 2009
Only if Brian Roberts was somehow involved in this game tonight.
And Peavy can’t crab about his awesome outing that became a loss, because the Mets apparently don’t care about providing Santana with an ounce of run support in his starts. In fact, they prefer to commit errors when he’s starting. What a waste of two excellent pitchers.
Just look at this team. What a craptastic lineup and rotation, top to bottom. David Eckstein (OPS+ 90), please don’t do anything good tonight. You’re not even the scrappiest player on the field tonight, that belongs to our three-headed monster that is Miles-Riot-LBR. Any team that regularly starts Eckstein in the third hole (29 games thus far) makes me cry tears of pity. Brian Giles (OPS+ 24), you too, no shenanigans from you either.

looking at this lineup ...
makes me realize how much Fukudome’s resurgence has meant to this team. Given all the injuries, where would we be if he was playing like he did in August/September.
Tip of the cap to Dome.
elgato - May 12, 2009
+1
I believed he would bounce back after last year, but during the WBC I was gettin nervous. Now he’s been doing well and man where would we be without him? Under .500 for sure.
cubsfaninatl - May 12, 2009
Its crunch time for Derrek Lee
Hoffpauir is putting on the pressure. I know lee was hurt and will get a couple games, but if he isn’t hitting I don’t see Lou keeping the cold bat out there.
nji232 - May 12, 2009
Screw that, it's crunch time for my finals.
dtpollitt - May 12, 2009
That makes two of us
nji232 - May 12, 2009
Summer is nice :)
jkobus - May 12, 2009
Go grab some Ian's for me and then make your way down to Monday's and get a 7 & 7.
dtpollitt - May 12, 2009
If I knew what any of that was...
Ill grab a beer and hate that I havent set up proper cable in the new apartment so I cant watch the cubs game :(
jkobus - May 12, 2009
I thought you were in Madison, not ISU. My bad.
dtpollitt - May 12, 2009
I've never been a fan of Ian's

Madison Cub Fan - May 12, 2009
Haha only a select few of us knew what that meant.
Although there is now an Ian’s Pizza in Wrigleyville. To all you non-Badgers, make sure you give it a try. Mac and Cheese, Steak and Fries, any crazy combo on pizza you could imagine. It’s a Madison staple. (and if you do go, make sure you get those 2 I suggested – they’re by far the most popular. All right now I’m getting hungry)
Link for you people in Chicago

Wait till you start working. There’es no more crunching for finals, but no more summers, either. After nearly 15 years of this, I think I’d rather have the finals.

I don't

drewishdrewid - May 12, 2009
no watching my sister and brother in law both having their finals this week

Crunch time for D. Lee maybe
Crunch time for Soto….Most definitely.
jkobus - May 12, 2009
Soto.. sigh
I’m just going to ignore Soto for a while bc it’s really disappointing to me.
nji232 - May 12, 2009
It's all my fault. I bought a Soto jersey in late September last year.

Don't think so.
Lee was finally starting to hit a little before he went down with the stiff neck again… He will get all the time he needs, as Hoff is back-up, and needed as a pinch hitter, (his primary role on this team).
Jimmyeatworld - May 12, 2009

mrcubsfan - May 12, 2009

I want lots of runs scored on our side of the scoreboard!
goodstuff96 - May 12, 2009
I don't care
if it’s a pitcher’s duel, a mugging in a back alley, or the Pacific Offensive — all I want is a Cub’s win.
drewishdrewid - May 12, 2009
...which ends with Peavy leaving the game in the seventh...
…and the Cubs lighting up the Padres bullpen.
daver - May 12, 2009
Pads' pen
As long as they don’t light up Heath Bell. He’s on my fantasy team!
danimal15 - May 12, 2009
Daily Herald made a mistake in its 1969 Cubs photos
It says the photo of Selma leaping up by the bullpen was taken June 8, 1969. But according to Retrosheet.org, there was no Cubs game that day.

But, this tired old refrain passes as journalism for the nearly-dead-on-life-support San Diego Union-Tribune.
San Diego Smooth Jazz Man - May 12, 2009
New owners cannot save them. They are done.
eswan9 - May 12, 2009
As someone schooled at nearby Northwestern and formerly employed in the front office by both the Red Sox and Padres once said, a game at Fenway is like going to church, whereas a game at Wrigley is like going to an epic party.
This, I can get behind. :D

eswan9 - May 12, 2009
they made the Prior
to Bartman connection too. Wasn’t that great?
drewishdrewid - May 12, 2009
I guess it was inevitable
since it’s the 40th anniversary of the 69 Cubs that articles will be written all year about it. But it still causes me pain. Less pain but pain none the less. I know we have discussed this plenty here at BCB but I do think the reason the ’69 are remembered so well (at least for me) is that the same players were on the team for years and I could name the players and their uniform numbers by heart. They finally were playing well and looked like it was actually going to be the year so the heartbreak was just incredible for a twelve year old to take. Like I said, it still hurts.
tucsoncubsfan - May 12, 2009

I bet if peavy does good today everyone will be like "why didn't we get him"
I_bleed_blue - May 12, 2009
Um...not to be rude...but most of us here know exactly why we didn't get him, and we won't ask even if he throws a perfect game.
santoswoodenlegs - May 12, 2009
I know that....but the for lack of a better term "stupid" fans still think he's the cy young pitcher he was a few years ago....i how ever am happy with the current team (with the exception of the injuries)

CubsWin!Oregon - May 12, 2009
I really have no idea what you're talking about.
That was 2007, not a long time ago. In 2008 Jake has a 2.85 ERA and an ERA+ of 134, and a WHIP of 1.180. Not his fault his team was completely horrible. He’s having a down year in 2009, but I’m not gonna freak out over his stats through 7 starts.
dtpollitt - May 12, 2009
I'm skeptical of great pitchers from San Diego
I don’t have the stats in front of me, but I seem to recall that their park is pretty pitcher friendly…
slcathena - May 12, 2009
the word "few" is subjective. to me 2 years is a few....what a few is to you may be different

Potentially very sad and ugly sight
Possibly very sad and ugly sight on tv tonight. Kerry pitching in an Indians uniform against the Sox.
Kerry is handsome and the Indians uniform isn’t bad but the combo still makes me want to throw up even though Kevin Gregg is growing on me.
And of course if I do notice the Indians are winning by less than 3 going into the 9th I will turn down the sound because Hawk harrelson makes me want to shoot myself in the head.

Get it done!
Come on Cubs, beat those Padres. Jake Peavy? He’s a good pitcher but way over-rated if you ask me. He’s great at home, but is average at best on the road. The Padres are a very bad team, no way can you lose this game. Hear me!
