Cubs To Face Pitcher No One Has Ever Heard Of: Cubs vs. Padres, Tuesday 5/12, 7:05 CT

Anyone ever heard of this "Peavy" guy?

Seriously, Jake Peavy is, of course, a good pitcher (though his numbers this year don't show it). My prediction: with the new ownership taking over in San Diego and the continued uncertainty about Cubs ownership, Peavy will remain a Padre all year -- and likely, once the new Padres ownership takes over -- for the balance of his contract there.

The Daily Herald's Mike Spellman writes today about the 1969 Cubs (and some about the 1959 White Sox, too), and quotes Fergie Jenkins on the question of whether Leo Durocher "wore the team out":

"That's nonsense. We were ready to play all the time. We had the players to do the job. Leo Durocher wouldn't have put us out there if he didn't have the confidence in us. Sure, a lot of the guys played regularly, but we had guys on the bench who helped out. Unfortunately we didn't get it going and the Mets did."

Fergie also talks about what game he thinks turned that season sour (hint: it was a bad call in NYC) and fills in some previously-unknown details about the black cat in Shea Stadium. (I don't usually mention stuff like that, but there's something new about that incident that I did not know before.)

And, Lou throws down the 2009 version of his "Throw Freakin' Strikes" gauntlet:
Piniella is looking for more than [Angel] Guzman to perform as he tries to identify enough relief pitchers on his team he can trust to have guts enough to throw strikes and endure the heat of close, late innings enough to reverse a slide that sunk the Cubs' bullpen to worst in the National League (5.65 ERA) before four good innings Sunday lifted them ahead of woeful Washington.

Piniella calls that "priority No. 1."

Jake Peavy has had a strange year. His overall numbers aren't good -- 2-4 with a 4.27 ERA, more than a run higher than his career ERA. Yet, he's also fourth in the NL in strikeouts (Rich Harden is 10th, despite throwing 12 fewer innings than anyone above him on the list). He has 10+ K's in two of his seven starts, yet his best game -- allowing only two hits and no runs in eight innings vs. the Dodgers on May 1 -- wound up a no-decision and a Padres loss when reliever Duaner Sanchez walked in the winning run in the last of the 9th. Peavy is 2-1, 2.81 in six career starts vs. the Cubs, but has a 3.68 ERA in four lifetime starts at Wrigley Field. Alfonso Soriano is 4-for-10 vs. Peavy with two HR.

Rich Harden has also had a strange year. He's struck out a lot of batters but has also been hit hard, thus the 4.83 ERA. He has never faced the Padres, and only one current member of their team -- David Eckstein, from their days together in the AL -- has faced him more than six times (3-for-15).

Today's game is on CSN Plus -- that's CLTV in Chicago, Comcast channel 285 for HD, and "check local listings" everywhere else. For today's other games see the MLB.com Mediacenter.

First !

Who cares ?

Why thank you.

Do I get a cake with that ?

internet cake!

Perfect

All the fun and none of the calories.

did you bring enough for everyone?
How could you cut such a beautiful thing?
My best friend's fiancee

is using one exactly like that for his grooms cake.

Damn that looks good.
Just for the record

My birthday is June 21 and I plan to be in the bleachers so you could always bring the real thing,

I got tix for that game as well
What a pitching matchup.

Harden vs. Peavy. It doesn’t get much better than that!

+1 classic baseball
True

but thinking things like that usually means it end up as 9-8 game. :-P

with both starters out after 3
Lets get the bats going tonight.

Early and often!

Only if Brian Roberts was somehow involved in this game tonight.

And Peavy can’t crab about his awesome outing that became a loss, because the Mets apparently don’t care about providing Santana with an ounce of run support in his starts. In fact, they prefer to commit errors when he’s starting. What a waste of two excellent pitchers.

Just look at this team. What a craptastic lineup and rotation, top to bottom. David Eckstein (OPS+ 90), please don’t do anything good tonight. You’re not even the scrappiest player on the field tonight, that belongs to our three-headed monster that is Miles-Riot-LBR. Any team that regularly starts Eckstein in the third hole (29 games thus far) makes me cry tears of pity. Brian Giles (OPS+ 24), you too, no shenanigans from you either.

1.21 whip

is still pretty darn good

Posted by Shanghai earlier, per Gordo:
Lineup vs. Peavy: sori, riot, fuky, lee, milt, font, soto, miles, harden.
looking at this lineup ...

makes me realize how much Fukudome’s resurgence has meant to this team. Given all the injuries, where would we be if he was playing like he did in August/September.

Tip of the cap to Dome.

+1

I believed he would bounce back after last year, but during the WBC I was gettin nervous. Now he’s been doing well and man where would we be without him? Under .500 for sure.

Its crunch time for Derrek Lee

Hoffpauir is putting on the pressure. I know lee was hurt and will get a couple games, but if he isn’t hitting I don’t see Lou keeping the cold bat out there.

Screw that, it's crunch time for my finals.
That makes two of us
Summer is nice :)
Go grab some Ian's for me and then make your way down to Monday's and get a 7 & 7.
If I knew what any of that was...

Ill grab a beer and hate that I havent set up proper cable in the new apartment so I cant watch the cubs game :(

I thought you were in Madison, not ISU. My bad.
I've never been a fan of Ian's

but it you were struggling thru finals…. I’d go and pick some up for you. :)

GASP

YOU TRAITOR

my favorite drunk food was always gryos and fries
Haha only a select few of us knew what that meant.

Although there is now an Ian’s Pizza in Wrigleyville. To all you non-Badgers, make sure you give it a try. Mac and Cheese, Steak and Fries, any crazy combo on pizza you could imagine. It’s a Madison staple. (and if you do go, make sure you get those 2 I suggested – they’re by far the most popular. All right now I’m getting hungry)

Link for you people in Chicago

And I found this, for those of you who need to see this stuff to believe it:

Video

woo-hoo!

I love Monday’s…my favorite bar in the world.

Yeah one has to try to mac and cheese pizza
50 more hours

I just keep telling myself that

summer

Wait till you start working. There’es no more crunching for finals, but no more summers, either. After nearly 15 years of this, I think I’d rather have the finals.

I don't

disagree.

no watching my sister and brother in law both having their finals this week

I am happy to be done w/ school

Crunch time for D. Lee maybe

Crunch time for Soto….Most definitely.

Soto.. sigh

I’m just going to ignore Soto for a while bc it’s really disappointing to me.

It's all my fault. I bought a Soto jersey in late September last year.
quick start buying Cardinal jerseys

you don’t have to wear them, just see if you can stop some of them from overachieving.

so am i :)

he’s like my favorite player. My boyfriend even understand that I have Geo love.

I still firmly believe he'll be okay.

Although he’s obviously struggling. :(

I wish I had your faith
Don't think so.

Lee was finally starting to hit a little before he went down with the stiff neck again… He will get all the time he needs, as Hoff is back-up, and needed as a pinch hitter, (his primary role on this team).

I hope so

We really need DLee’s bat with Aramis out for two months.

JIMMY
TIMMY!
Well, there's one pre-game tradition out of the way.
Here's another...

Your sandwich is ready!

More from Twittermyer:
cst_cubs Big Z (hammy) doing better, scheduled for Class A rehab start Sat or Sun. about 1 hour ago from txt

Just in case some of y’all haven’t seen it.

Would love to see an old fashioned pitchers duel myself.
Not me...

I want lots of runs scored on our side of the scoreboard!

I don't care

if it’s a pitcher’s duel, a mugging in a back alley, or the Pacific Offensive — all I want is a Cub’s win.

...which ends with Peavy leaving the game in the seventh...

…and the Cubs lighting up the Padres bullpen.

Pads' pen

As long as they don’t light up Heath Bell. He’s on my fantasy team!

Daily Herald made a mistake in its 1969 Cubs photos

It says the photo of Selma leaping up by the bullpen was taken June 8, 1969. But according to Retrosheet.org, there was no Cubs game that day.

Wow.

I knew the bullpen was bad.

I didn’t know they were that bad.

Yeah same here
I'm not actually surprised by this

I cringe when most of them pitch.

same here

I only trust marmol to get out of his mess, and really that isn’t going to keep happening if the walks keep up

Exactly.

I feel the same way, any time I start to trust someone else they totally blow something in the 7th/8th/9th

This wasn't worth wasting space on a fan shot

http://www3.signonsandiego.com/stories/2009/may/11/padres-expectations-pale-cubs164954/

But, this tired old refrain passes as journalism for the nearly-dead-on-life-support San Diego Union-Tribune.

New owners cannot save them. They are done.

As someone schooled at nearby Northwestern and formerly employed in the front office by both the Red Sox and Padres once said, a game at Fenway is like going to church, whereas a game at Wrigley is like going to an epic party.

This, I can get behind. :D

Well, it's the sameoldsameold

“….hey, it’s been 100 years since a World Series victory for the Cubs!!”

Oy vey. We know. Everybody knows. Find something else.

they can't...that would mean doing actual journalism.
With the sale of the U-T last week, and the nearly 100 dismissals

they now have a staff to rival the Pennysaver.

little harsh....

dissin pennysaver like that.

they made the Prior

to Bartman connection too. Wasn’t that great?

I guess it was inevitable

since it’s the 40th anniversary of the 69 Cubs that articles will be written all year about it. But it still causes me pain. Less pain but pain none the less. I know we have discussed this plenty here at BCB but I do think the reason the ’69 are remembered so well (at least for me) is that the same players were on the team for years and I could name the players and their uniform numbers by heart. They finally were playing well and looked like it was actually going to be the year so the heartbreak was just incredible for a twelve year old to take. Like I said, it still hurts.

When does STL start playing real teams?

3 more against the Pirates.

You say this as we're about to begin a series against the Padres?
true

but come thursday night they will have had 8 of 13 this month against washington or pitt.

Not soon enough

Albert went yard Cards up 1-0 but Zuke is pitching so the Pirates have a decent chance to win,

but.... but....

they have gaudin, prior, gerut, giles & uncle cliffy.

gah...

the reply button is my friend….
the reply button is my friend.

I bet if peavy does good today everyone will be like "why didn't we get him"
Um...not to be rude...but most of us here know exactly why we didn't get him, and we won't ask even if he throws a perfect game.
I know that....but the for lack of a better term "stupid" fans still think he's the cy young pitcher he was a few years ago....i how ever am happy with the current team (with the exception of the injuries)
wat
the stupid fans think we need peavy
well, you said everyone.
make three fanposts about it

please i am begging you

my bad...if i could re write org. post i would take that out
We're cool. Just try to limit the uses of absolutes in your posts next time...

because using absolutes is always a bad idea.

We teach the kids to “AVOID ABSOLUTES” in test-taking strategies. I mean, did EVERYONE really think the world was flat? Nooooooooo.

applying some of your knowledge

proud of you :)

it is absolutely bad?
all of the time.
Only a Sith deals in absolutes.
unlike those Jedi...

who wouldn’t shut up about the “Dark Side” vs. “Light Side”… :)

I really have no idea what you're talking about.
the cy young pitcher he was a few years ago

That was 2007, not a long time ago. In 2008 Jake has a 2.85 ERA and an ERA+ of 134, and a WHIP of 1.180. Not his fault his team was completely horrible. He’s having a down year in 2009, but I’m not gonna freak out over his stats through 7 starts.

I'm skeptical of great pitchers from San Diego

I don’t have the stats in front of me, but I seem to recall that their park is pretty pitcher friendly…

the word "few" is subjective. to me 2 years is a few....what a few is to you may be different
Can we just get this game going already?
Seriously.

I’ve been killing time since 4:10 when I got home from school.

I've been killing time all day mending socks... exciting!!
hee hee.

Yeah, I’ve been much less productive.

I'll send ya some socks...
Can they be Cubs socks?
sure.
filled with candy?
I don't care about candy.

But if they were cubs toe socks, that would rock. :P

as long as they aren't White Sux
or Red
dont mind the red sox

By the way, I realized that my final post last night in the hawks thread wishing the team goodluck was my 888th.

Yes, I take credit for the hawks winning :)

with Kane (88) getting a hat trick no less
exactly my point
like...this?

better be careful you are going to be accused of being sexist
Oh pshaw!

All I ask is for some equal time

Geo’s struggling so maybe a ted lilly?

Take that away!!
I know ted lilly

and that is no ted lilly :)

that is Fred Lilly
I'm reporting you...

…for having a large junk (collection).

Grrrr.

EQUAL TIME!!!!!!!!! Key word EQUAL!

ohhh...sorry.

:)

Much better.

Thanks!

That's just wrong
where'd you get that pic of my girlfriend?
they're black sox actually...
really you can sew?

not a skill I have

Ever since I was a kid.

My step mom taught me, b/c she got tired of sewing all my merit badges on my BS uni…

I made Life Scout

and I still remember how to sew, but have not done so in a long time

Me too. Always wanted to make Eagle...

and give it to my grandpa. He was the second longest registered BS ever…

my GPA was Eagle as well

I remember bringing his BS BOok to meetings one MOmday, thing was old as hell.

So were you OA?
never got there

many trips I missed out on sadly. My favorite one was when we went to Eli, Minn and canoed the boundry waters, I would love to get a group together and do that again

You were a Life Scout, but not in the Order of the Arrow?
poor family growing up

couldnt afford many trips. I was able to make my merit badges and qualify by doing a lot of things locally.

makes sense...

I’m sure you would have been if you could have gone…

mom didnt work

dad was an alcoholic.

without my GPa working with me, I would have been lucky to make first class, or join at all. Also didnt help that I joined the summer of 8th grade, so I was compressed on time.

I miss those days

Did you ever do the winter camping up there?

thats my thought

I didn’t see much baseball saturday or sunday. I am going thru baseball withdrawl

Definite baseball withdrawal here too.
Gotta work nightshift tonight

Go Cubs! Fearless prediction: Ted Lilly pinch hit HR
Take care all

Of all the great things that have ever happened

That would be the greatest of them all.

Potentially very sad and ugly sight

Possibly very sad and ugly sight on tv tonight. Kerry pitching in an Indians uniform against the Sox.

Kerry is handsome and the Indians uniform isn’t bad but the combo still makes me want to throw up even though Kevin Gregg is growing on me.

And of course if I do notice the Indians are winning by less than 3 going into the 9th I will turn down the sound because Hawk harrelson makes me want to shoot myself in the head.

what up what up!!!

glad the off day is over, made a desktop to share, but dont know how to post if for everyone. anyone got any ideas?

Get it done!

Come on Cubs, beat those Padres. Jake Peavy? He’s a good pitcher but way over-rated if you ask me. He’s great at home, but is average at best on the road. The Padres are a very bad team, no way can you lose this game. Hear me!
vr, Xei

for those that care cards are down 3-1
excellent...
mr burns....

smithers is looking for you.

Good recognition... I'm doing the finger tent as well.
and with this post....

I’ll be at 664
