Bleed Cubbie Blue

The Calm After The Storm: Cubs vs. Padres, Thursday 5/14, 1:20 CT

The Cubs are 19-14 after 33 games of what seems like daily turmoil; after 33 games last year they were ... 19-14. They can move into a first-place tie today if they win and the Brewers and Cardinals lose; they'd be 20-14, tied with the Reds, who have the day off. Sunshine and blue skies await the Cubs and Padres this afternoon.

Many of us wondered during the offseason why Henry Blanco, who did a good job for four years as the Cubs' backup catcher, wasn't re-signed to a new deal for 2009. Paul Sullivan found out that Henry was puzzled, too:

"You're asking the wrong guy," Blanco said. "I don't know either. We did everything we could, but it didn't happen. I'm here now. It's a bit different, but that's the name of the game. I did everything I could, but it happens."

So no hard feelings?

Blanco paused a second.

"Not really," he finally replied. "I still have a job. Of course I miss these guys a lot, but I have to get used to my new team now."

The article goes on to say that Blanco hopes to manage when his career is over. I hope it's in the Cubs organization. He strikes me as the kind of guy who will make an excellent coach or manager. While Koyie Hill has done a good job backing up Geovany Soto, it's possible that Blanco not being here -- he was an outstanding mentor to Soto the last couple of years -- might be one reason for Geo's slow start.

Carlos Zambrano threw in the bullpen yesterday without incident and will make a minor league rehab start for Daytona; it will either be on Saturday at Clearwater or Sunday at Dunedin. If all goes well -- and there doesn't seem to be any reason it wouldn't -- he'll return to the major league rotation a week from tomorrow, Friday, May 22 at San Diego.

Mr. Weird Chin Hair, Chad Gaudin, will be making his first start against the team that unceremoniously dumped him at the end of spring training. Only a handful of Cubs have ever faced him -- Aaron Miles is 3-for-5 against him. Gaudin hasn't allowed a homer in his three starts this year -- the wind is supposed to be blowing out to right field today, so maybe a couple of the Cubs' lefthanded hitters can change that stat. Patience will help -- Gaudin has walked 10 in 17.2 innings. (Chad looks a little pixellated because the only photo I could find of him in a SD cap is a little smaller than the size I usually use in the pitcher box, so I had to expand it to fit.)

This isn't an excuse, but as you can imagine, the fact that his new baby has serious health problems may be weighing on Ryan Dempster's mind and thus, his performance so far this year. He has gone at least six innings in all seven of his starts so far, and is 6-3, 3.82 lifetime vs. San Diego. Brian Giles has owned him -- 16-for-36 (.444) with 4 doubles, a triple and 2 HR.

Today's game is on CSN only -- no San Diego TV. For today's other games see the MLB.com Mediacenter.

Let's Go Get 'Em Cubs!!!!!!

Afternoon Everybody!

We need to see Bill Murray today!

Hope the Cubs can come through.

TRASH GAUDIN!

I second that notion!
Caption: Chad Gaudin's nightmare!
hey Chad

its heeeeeeeeeeeereeeeeeeeeeee

Chad the Grouch.
LIGHT THE SWL BEACON!

similar to the bat-light?

Mine is WAAAAY better than that crap drew, com'on.
it's like mac vs. pc
absolutely

but I haven’t SEEN yours!

if it was for Drew there would be a unicorn

with the spot light coming out of its horn?

I should be so luck

to have a drewishdrewid beacon.

my goal is to one day have a beacon of my own

there are some pretty imaginative things one can do with my last name

my initials are great for people to play with

TLC

I have a die hard redwings fan wanting to bet on the not quite official Hawks wings series

Wants to bet 100 on each game and 300 on the series. So if the hawks were to sweep, that would be $700. Advice?

Accept now...

… but on the condition that if the Wings don’t win in, it counts as a sweep!

FWIW, i think we’d MUCH rather play the Ducks. We’d get home ice, and the wings can’t be beat in Detroit.

The ducks would be much better

They are a good playoff team but if the WIngs are firing on all cylinders its gonna be a real tough series

the guy is so brash of a wings fan he might accept that
It'd be about the only way to even the odds...

… straight up, with Detroit having home ice advantage, their record on that ice, and their record against the hawks this season, i wouldn’t like that bet one bit.

But the Hawks have looked great in the playoffs, beat Luongo, and had no problem scoring

They also get about 4 more days of rest

Detroit plays better hockey

and much better defense. They also will not care about trying to bully us, which the other teams figured that by being a bunch of bulies, the young Hawks would get flustered and lose their concentration.

regarding being beat in Det

we won the last two games of the season vs Detroit, including one in Detroit.

This young Hawks team will take Detroit 6 or 7 with a toss up for the outcome IMO. Anaheim will try to bully the Hawks more like Vancouver or Calgary, where Detroit will play hockey and see who has the better skilled team

and doesn't an up and down the Ice matchup bode well for the hawks?
against teams that hit first and play hockey second yes

which Detroit doesnt do. They play hockey first, and play more hockey second

+1

Detroit can play better hockey than the Ducks, and they wont make the mistakes Tim has mentioned about bullying the Hawks. It will go to a game 7 most likely though if they do play Detroit.

Man these hockey playoffs are amazing compared to NBA that has been meh so far (cept for bulls celts)

during the regular season

you bully Kane and he broke like a curveball from Lilly. The post season he finally grew some short and curlies and has been able to play thru and man up. That has been a huge difference maker.

Detroit is like a machine. They just win, and are hated for one reason only, they win. They are compared to the Lakers or Yankees due to their winning traditions, but they are nothing like the other two. They are a organization that is easy to respect and they play the game right.

a few things

a. As a new Hawks fan, I want the Wings.

The Ducks are no “better” or “worse” than the wings.

c. The Hawks have won in Joe Louis this season.

It’s also the Playoffs. A completely different aminal for this supposedly-inexperienced team.

...that was supposed to be "b."

not a bold-faced type

Red Wings are a very good team

very sound fundamentally, they will skate more then try to provoke, and are a much bigger challange than Vancouver / Calgary were.

Date Visitor Home Score
Sat Oct 25, 2008 Red Wings Blackhawks6 – 5 Shoot Out Loss
Sat Dec 6, 2008 Blackhawks Red Wings 4 – 5 Shoot Out Loss
Tue Dec 30, 2008 Blackhawks Red Wings 0 – 4 Loss
Thu Jan 1, 2009 Red Wings Blackhawks (Wrigley Field) 6 – 4 Loss
Sat Apr 11, 2009 Blackhawks Red Wings 4 – 2 Win
Sun Apr 12, 2009 Red Wings Blackhawks 0 – 3 Win

So for the season, we were 2 W 4L and out scored 23-20 in the process. It is a risky bet, but not one that would be impossible to obtain.

but we did beat them twice late in the season
Detroit

had locked their #1 seed by then, Hawks were playing to either be #4 or #5 seed

alright Timmy

thanks for the input, much valued and appreciated

much welcome.

Sunday I do believe will be game 1 of the Conference Finals. Will be at home vs Pronger and Anaheim (Pronger has owned the hawks thru his career when he was with St Louis), or against out #1 Rival, and fellow Original Six team, Detroit in Detroit.

For those who were not here, we had a nice Blackhawks Game Thread, and I plan to have another one Sunday, so feel free to join us there.

oh dear
I thought i was going crazy

but it must have been Chad and his Gregorian Chant that i heard

I like this one:

Where are all the animals?
thats a playoff beard
here's a question

what would the Ted Lilly beacon be?

you dont need a beacon

he just knows

how do you make

a beacon of greatness?

Here at BCB, we have but one punishment for setting alight the Beacon of Greatness:

The image of one hand clapping.
We're getting the rain you had yesterday in Chicago

It’s here today in Vermont. I’d rather have it here, so the Cubs can play baseball in Chicago.

Chad's not normally pixallized?

I thought he always looked a little fuzzy.

Hank White sounds sad.

I would be too. The Cubs are one of the best, and the Padres, probably the worst or close to the worst in all of baseball. I’d be smitten if he came and coached for the Cubs after his playing career is over.

Dempster’s given up at least 2 runs in all 7 of his starts this year. He gave up two homers to the Suds last week. Com’on, Demp, let’s shut ’em out today.

He deserves better

He was always good as a back-up or a fill-in starter.

Gaudin's goatee

SNIP IT OFF!

It bothers me to look at it

If he’s got a wife she’s gotta put the foot down on that one.

that's why

he’s growing it so long.

There's a wife/beard joke in there

but I ain’t touching it.

Demp

What’s the matter with Dempsters baby?

:O(

Been in the ICU for awhile, I think since she was born.

Having trouble swallowing.

that's terrible

I hope everything works out

Indeed.

I do too! (Hope everything works out)

I read where the Cubs are the only team in both leagues....

Gaudin has not faced in his career. Before today.

Break out the brooms!
This is a fake BCB shirt my mom found online and bought me...

…at least she tried, right?

I think it would of been a solid T-shirt without the snot lines

but she definitely made a solid effort

Did everyone seen Chanman's fanshot?

Great ESPN article featuring Al.

whats a fanshot
its synonymous with Fanpost
whats a fanpost
its a free area where you can voice you're opinions without any substantiated information
Okay, good, that's what I was looking for.
We got a lineup yet?
yes

Sori
Riot
Dome (rf)
Hoff (1b)
Soto
Reed
Scales (3b)
Miles (2b)
Demp

Theriot should be batting third

lol

Surprised they didn't move Riot down a couple spots...

He does lead the majors in homeruns this month, after all.

Hahahaha

Stats are funny sometimes

thats a scrappy lineup
not as scrappy

as the one against Peavy.

Who?
he's a pitcher.
actually, tho

I meant “Lincecum”.

I was gonna say

What was so scrappy about last night

i'd like to see Geo make some noise out of the 5 spot
LOUD NOISES!
I'm going to invite EA to the pants party
pants party!

that HR last night I am hoping was the

VROOM VROOM SOTO STARTER

Fonzie gonna take one to waveland again?
First pitch leadoff HR?

Pass Biggio completely?

meh, well if we win today

somebody again has to do the honors of posting the Bill Murray picture. I will be out for another potential sweep AGAIN!

I got it.
hurray!

gonna be managin’ a rival high school baseball game tonight. should be fun

Game thread's gonna be ridiculous today, I can tell.

My dad called me right after this moment.

He also called me right after DeRo’s Game 1 homer last year.

He has agreed to NEVER call me during a big game again.

yeah

it was kind of a let-down, wasn’t it…

Both times.

And trust me, he was pulling for the Cubs as much as a Cardinal fan possibly could.

Whatever would give you THAT idea?

I thought you were disturbing, but anybody that dresses up a friggin’ chipmunk is much more so.

I take umbrage with you sir...

for that is a squirrel.

SWL

the rodent expert?

Yes...this is a chipmunk.

That wookie is gonna kick his ass.

Deez nuts are his.

I must again correct you sir...for that creature is an ewok. Wookies look like this...

Fail.

It’s Wookiee.

Who are you who are so wise in the ways of science?
Sorry.

I know my Matrix way better than I know my Star Wars.

That Ewok should really take it easy, the Wookie gave them to him...

?

Stop posting photos of me

at once! I’m a very private person.

you are very tough and strong!
You know what they say:

they say all i see is a red X
I've never successfully posted a photo here

so here’s the link, I guess: Photo

any chance

that the Ump calls Dempster for hitting Braun today? yes I know Braun will not be in Wrigley, but it would be about as legit a HBP as the last one

Speaking of Umps

Did you see that knucklehead umpire pushing Magglio Ordonez out of the batters box in last night’s Det/Minn game? What the hell was he thinking? He sure as heckfire better be suspended for a game or two for that.

No, I missed that

An ump pushing a player? What was the context?

Ordonez was arguing

and the ump nudged him in the back as if to say, “Move along.” It was very unnecessary and the MLBN guys were saying how if Magglio had done what the ump did he’d be fined, suspended, et al.

one more example

of how they’re trying to make the game about the umps, and not the players.

What was even crazier

was Ordonez wasn’t even arguing that much. While still unacceptable it would still be somewhat understandable if the guy was bitching him out to no end, but it wasn’t like that at all. And he only heard him out for a few seconds at that.

Exactly

It was really a strange situation. And ya could read Maggs’ lips asking, “why did you push me?”

Maggs wasn't happy with the called

3rd strike and had a few words with the HPU who then evidently decided he had had enough and decided to help usher Ordonez back to his dugout by putting his arm on his back and attempting to guide him away. Leyland came flying out of the dugout and went bananas on the guy.

wow, i had not heard about it
He didn't push him.

It was a “Here son, there’s nothing to see here, move on” gesture. It wasn’t mean, it wasn’t facicious, it was as professional as possible in trying to prevent an argument.

Not supposed to

initiate contact. Kind of boneheaded move by the Ump, IMO. Can’t be doin’ that. Players can’t touch umps, and vice versa.

I guess defusing the situation

means to push the “problem” away according to this ump.

MLB really needs to do something about this

I don't see the problem, frankly.

The two sides aren’t supposed to touch each other, I understand that. I don’t think the ump was trying to break a rule…he was trying to do what was best for the game or that particular situation. Nothing about that gesture says “I’m in control here, do what I say.” He was trying to defuse a situation, not create one.

sure

and if a player had done EXACTLY the same thing… he’d be suspended.

That's not the point!

Schrieber was trying to do a good-will gesture for Ordonez—he was clearly gonna throw the ass outta the game. He was trying to NOT throw him out of the game. This is like a little brat adolescent arguing some petty rule because he’s avoiding the bigger situation at hand. Magglio was being sassy and Paul was giving him a free out so he wouldn’t toss his ass. My buddy in Minnesota was watching the game and said Magglio probably coulda been tossed easily.

Then toss him

If ya wanna give him a quick, “that was your last word, Maggs. Otherwise you’re gone” kinda thing, that’s fine. No need to to “inadvertantly” put your hand on his back and usher him back to the dugout.

This is stupid. I'm glad the game's on.

It’s not to the same degree, but it’s like a good samaritan rule. He was trying to help and is gonna end up getting suspended for it. Magglio was being an ass and deserved to be tossed.

maybe

maybe not. But if we’re going to argue Rules are Rules, then they need to apply to the umps as much as the players.

If a player had put an arm on an agitated ump in an attempt to defuse a situation, that player would be suspended in a heartbeat.

but what is good for the goose............

if the ump can do that, then the players should be able to as well.

So when MB puts his hand on the Ump, by the standard set, it is ok.

I understand completely.

But the rules are the rules are the rules. Bradley didn’t mean to touch bills, but he did. Schrieber thought he was doing the right thing but he crossed the line. Simple as that.

True to an extent.

But if the player did the exact same thing he’d be reamed for it.

How would you feel if another adult, in attempting to diffuse a situation, pushed you aside as opposed to walking away themself?

Yeah, I don't know how far

putting your arm on an already agitated player goes in the way of diffusing the situation. Anyway, Paul Schrieber musta realized he was in the wrong, as he has already issued an apology.

I'm sure the ump association or somebody told him to do that.

He shouldn’t have touched him, no. The intent was not ill-willed, however. it was a helpful one.

Ill-willed or not

he made a mistake and has since acknowledged it.

Good for him to man up.

We all make mistakes and it’s refreshing to see him admit to it.

do you know who the ump was?

Let Me Google That For You.

Greatest website idea ever

People always ask me a question that I just enter into google and send them that.

Well it’s like, you’re already on the internet…what’s stopping you from doing the same thing I’m gonna do? Hit CTRL+T, open up a new tab, Google that shiz.

never seen that before

but I am disappointed, you only found the link for us, why did you not open the link to it and scroll to the important parts of the article?

why rest bradley now?

i know it’s a day game after a night game, but if he’ll probably have to serve at least a one game suspension sometime in the next few days when they announce the decision. why not wait for that?

wondered the same thing ...

is it possible that he IS serving the suspension? Anybody know?

Because he's our best hitter off the bench...

…and the suspension was truly bullshit. We need his bat for at least one pinch hit today.

plus with the rain yesterday

might be good to rest him in case the field has some soft areas to avoid any knee twisting

your answer makes no sense

The suspension has nothing to do with him being on the bench, and his bat would be one of the best in the lineup. I’d rather have it there.

Why can’t Lou ever space out resting starters? It’s always 3 or 4 guys on the same day

Honestly

it is cuz we had a night game followed by a day game

i think i'd rather have his bat for four or five at bats

with the wind blowing straight out to right.

It was great to see Geo have a good night last night

hopefully he can keep it up today!

Don't worry: Zambrano won't hustle anymore (well, for a month any day)

From Hardball:

Asked if he had to change his ways now, Zambrano replied: "For a month, yeah. I’ll be running like Geo Soto or Bengie Molina. I’ll be running nice and easy, just taking my time, not hustling.

“I apologize to the Cubs fans for not being (a complete player). It’s one thing to hustle and another thing to not play good. I will perform good, try to do all the things right, but in the running situation I have to take it easy, at least for a month, or until this thing is completely over. Then you’ll see me running like Juan Pierre or Jose Reyes.”
Right on Z.

We all love the National League (Where Players Play!) but it’s good to hear the usually full-bore Zambrano know when he has to limit himself.

just to stave off the misunderstandings
Carlos Zambrano apologized to Cubs fans on Thursday for not hustling when he returns from his hamstring injury next week
yes, yes.

Wouldn’t want any “Zambrano is lazy” fanposts popping up because of this.

He's such a slouch.
especially if the posts are from people who have played baseball @ high level

rolling my eyes

and can give advice

from a scouts point of view, until you admit to not being a scout

or understanding Z

I don’t care if you play beer league softball or are a pitcher on the Cubs……..

I doubt you understand Z and his motives.

you of course not referring to you tim
i knew what you were meaning

no worries MCF

I like apologizing in advance

shows he is not happy that he will be loafing a bit

yeah, the whole thing was tongue-in-cheek

good to see Carlos in a good mood.

You can run as slow as you want...

during a HR trot.

i know we have to rest him

but if he can’t play three days in a row we’re in trouble.

rest him now

to be able to push him later. Maybe?

whoops - i misplaced this comment

i was referring to resting bradley still. not talking about zambrano.

If Z not pitching 3 days in a row has us in trouble..........

I think this team needs more help than it did in 06

j/k

Surprising to read from Blanco...

I always thought he went to SD because more playing time would be available there. Sounds like he truly wanted to stay. Now I don’t see any reason why Hendry wouldn’t bring him back. Perplexing.

Alright heading home from class

Hopefully were up 2-0 by the time i get home :)

2-0?

w/ guadin on the mound, i’m expecting some real crooked numbers today, ’specially early…
