We can’t offer arbitration, because what if he accepts! We might owe $10M for 1 year to a local hero who had an awesome year last year for us in a position of great need, who remains remarkably tradeable!
Cleveland has been a pretty crappy team, but Wood has only allowed runs in 4 of 13 appearances this year.
One of those was 1 run allowed in an opening day blowout loss;
Another of those was a Kerry Wood save;
and one of them was a 2-run blown save (his only blown save of the year), which the Indians wound up winning.
His only truly “bad” appearance was allowing a 3-run HR to Jason Bay in a 0-0 game to lose to the Red Sox a few weeks back.
But seriously, he’s been more good than bad. And even more seriously, the guy was a Cub from age 18 through age 32…. frankly, he is a Cub for life. He would and should be a Cub this year if our GM had only offered arbitration, and we shouldn’t be ragging on him as if he was some mercenary we used for half a season and cast off.
CubsToSeriesby70: Carmen Fanzone stinks! Why did we trade Santo again?
RickMondaysOtherWife: You mean that guy hitting .221 for the Sux? That Santo? He’s not a Cub anymore. Get over it. He’s gone and the Cubs don’t need him.
In the last meltdown remotely equal to this — last year’s “first Harden game, Marmol blows 7 run lead” game, Marshall got the GW RBI when no one else could hit.
My baseball hating best friend is coming over and politely inquired how the Cubs were going. It was bottom of the 8th so I said they were winning and it would all be over soon with an easy win.
OVER 35 years of being a fan and I NEVER LEARN. NO LEAD IS SAFE. NEVER EVER.
does anyone else agree with the giving up an out theory?
I mean, who is to say Miles (I know, its Miles) doesn’t come up with a single or double? Now we’ve GIVEN up an out.
WALK OFF - OVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
closers in non-closing situations suck. They need the rush. THey need the energy. They want to pad that save total. He has been in with a 4 run lead or more in the ninth, the last 3 out of 4 times. Closers hate that.
I love that MLB teams keep doing this with LaTroy.
This is the 4th MLB team to make the same mistake — “LaTroy is pitching some great 8th innings for us! Let’s make him the 9th inning guy!”
LaTroy Hawkins is living, breathing proof that actual closers have value, and that some pitchers, while effective in other situations, cannot pitch in the 9th.
starts by praising Wells: “He’s pitched 2 great games, and he doesn’t have a win yet. But if he continues to pitch like that, he’s gonna get a bunch of wins.”
Gregg: “In his defense he hadn’t pitched in a while. He needed to pitch even if the score had been 8 to nothing.”
I’ve had the shoulder injury he had. Or something close. And I didn’t respond to rehab and had to have surgery. And took me about a year to get back to “normal”.
This was a fun game to watch. Gotta love the early starts. I wasn’t too nervous about this one. I called it during Gregg’s tee-ball fest. This team is starting to bring my faith back around.
I wasn’t too nervous about this one either. A lot of fans need to realize that Lou knows what he’s doing. I’m glad that Lou gave that know-it-all behind the dugout the “what’s for” near the end of the game. Some of these fans need to remember that our manager is Lou freakin’ Piniella for goodness sake.
And three good hitters for the Astros started the mess in the first place. What, ya think Fat Elvis, El Cabao, and Miggy are gonna be held down all day? I know you don’t like Lou though, so I’m not surprised you feel this way…
the cubs cant always make it look it easy. we all know that. but gregg was disgracefull. i hope lou does not stick with this guy through thick and thin.
if Lou isn’t punishing Marmol for going to the WBC instead of staying home like Lou wanted him too. I like Marmol as a closer. (Or more precisely, I like Marmol better than Gregg as our closer).
pathetic ass bullpen
DC Cubbie - May 16, 2009
i could really do without the booing
I may be beating a horse than was killed in the last thread, but geez. Relax.
fogelmania - May 16, 2009
99% of the time I agree
but Gregg deserved it. That was putrid.
Gibbon Jockey - May 16, 2009
he had a bad day
wood had those too

Bad is putting it lightly
calicubfan - May 16, 2009
It's a good thing beer sales have ended
sanantonecub - May 16, 2009
who?
some guy in the american league?
like I said, i don’t agree with booing 99% of the time
Gibbon Jockey - May 16, 2009
This is for Gregg...
….BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
calicubfan - May 16, 2009
ditto
but this time, with feeeeeeling.
lol
Gibbon Jockey - May 16, 2009
He never had a day like that.
Even in his worst game, the blister blown save vs. STL, he got 2 outs. And only gave up 3.
5 ER in 0 IP is unacceptable, even once.
D98 - May 16, 2009
Um
4. not 5.
Allie - May 16, 2009
of course.
D98 - May 16, 2009
so much more acceptable....
murphymj - May 16, 2009
Not acceptable
but losing my mind over it doesn’t seem to make sense to me.
gregg has games when he sucks. today was one. we pulled out the win.
Allie - May 16, 2009
Agreed
PieFan08 - May 16, 2009
I am polly anna with this team
That deserved to be booed. That was awful.
slcathena - May 16, 2009
That was a booable offense
while still understanding closers will blow up like that from time to time.
Not Bruce Froemming - May 16, 2009
couldn't agree more
Emelie - May 16, 2009
Can we please
ship Heilman back to the Mets? He did such a fine job for them last year….
jaxinnabox - May 16, 2009
They probably wouldn't take him unless we threw in Marmol.
He wore out some welcomes in the big apple.
D98 - May 16, 2009
two down
please please please get out of it
santo4hof - May 16, 2009
Where's Kerry?
jaxinnabox - May 16, 2009
In Cleveland, b/c of our gutless front office.
We can’t offer arbitration, because what if he accepts! We might owe $10M for 1 year to a local hero who had an awesome year last year for us in a position of great need, who remains remarkably tradeable!
D98 - May 16, 2009
Your truth is making me nauseus.
slcathena - May 16, 2009
You mean...
… the guy in Cleveland with a 6.00 ERA and 13 hits and vie walks in 12.0 innings? That Kerry?
Get over it. He’s gone, and the Cubs don’t need him.
Ross - May 16, 2009
lol
Allie - May 16, 2009
I'm not nuts about this logic.
Cleveland has been a pretty crappy team, but Wood has only allowed runs in 4 of 13 appearances this year.

Another of those was a Kerry Wood save;

D98 - May 16, 2009
I loved Woody
but he’s not here anymore.
Allie - May 16, 2009
Neither is Ernie Banks or Ryne Sandberg.
Would you have accepted throwing Ronnie Santo under the bus during his final half-season on the South Side?
D98 - May 16, 2009
I wasn't alive then
I really have no idea.
But I don’t think saying “he’s not here anymore and he hasn’t torn it up in CLE” = throwing under the bus.
But whatever.

I’m a Cub fan. And I wish Woody nothing but the best… but he is gone. I’d love if he weren’t… but he is. So you get over it.
Allie - May 16, 2009
Watch it, bub...
carmen_fanzone - May 16, 2009
What the hell happened???
It was 4-0, I did some laundry, now 4-4?? WTF?
calicubfan - May 16, 2009
Never do laundry during a game!
That’s, like, one of those unwritten rules, right?
Clutch16 - May 16, 2009
Along with saying this game is a lock in the 8th
gizmo6d9 - May 16, 2009
My dad always used to iron during Bulls playoff games
during the championship years in the 90s.
So you’ve gotta get the laundry done first and iron during the game.
aldimond - May 16, 2009
Kevin Gregg and Gee Heilman happened.
D98 - May 16, 2009
I think your being
a little unfair on heilman.
he only gave up one single which was inside according to gameday.
cubsfaninatl - May 16, 2009
He also walked Bourn.
D98 - May 16, 2009

gizmo6d9 - May 16, 2009

they are always strikes
in my opinion
murphymj - May 16, 2009
yes.
3 outs
santo4hof - May 16, 2009
yay

C’mon Bobby! Finish this off in style!
Clutch16 - May 16, 2009
Maybe Marshall can get his skipped start
by pitching through extras
gizmo6d9 - May 16, 2009
Scales, Marshall, Fonzie
Allie - May 16, 2009
They double switched marshall wont be up will he?
Bricks and Ivy - May 16, 2009
Ah
Thats what i get for only sort paying attention during the switch
Allie - May 16, 2009
It was a double switch
Miles hitting 9th now, Scales moved to 3B
hip2bsquare - May 16, 2009
I'd rather have Marshall batting.
In the last meltdown remotely equal to this — last year’s “first Harden game, Marmol blows 7 run lead” game, Marshall got the GW RBI when no one else could hit.
D98 - May 16, 2009
Thank you Marshall.
Can we please end this now? Please?
slcathena - May 16, 2009
PS
Lou: Marshall is your best Long Inning chance in case this doesn’t end. Don’t pinch hit for him.
k? Thanks.
slcathena - May 16, 2009
'Twas a double switch.
Marshall is in the 7 slot I think.
aldimond - May 16, 2009

ouch
Gibbon Jockey - May 16, 2009
WHAT IS GOING ON!?!?!?!?!?!
poor guy
Gibbon Jockey - May 16, 2009
He wasn't even mad at Gregg
he was incredulous. Not a lot of moaning… just a lot of heavy breathing.
Reddevil - May 16, 2009
Scales walkoff...
mark it lol
gizmo6d9 - May 16, 2009
That would so rock.
slcathena - May 16, 2009

Yep
salparadise23 - May 16, 2009
Ayup
Clutch16 - May 16, 2009
Screwd?
I think he just got the 5 spot in the rotation
plenz - May 16, 2009
He's earned that and a W
He’ll get 1 out of 2
Reddevil - May 16, 2009
I like Marshall in the rotation
Allie - May 16, 2009
+1
Emelie - May 16, 2009
marshall in the rotation, wells in the pen
murphymj - May 16, 2009
sori walkoff
Lou………………looks soooooo happy!
plenz - May 16, 2009
Whew
1st & 2nd with no outs and they didn’t score any more.
It could be worse…..
salparadise23 - May 16, 2009
Yeah...
Heilman gave up a walk and a hit and got 2 outs. Not great but not terrible. I put it mostly on Gregg here
gizmo6d9 - May 16, 2009
When half the runners you face get on
you’re lucky to come out unscathed.
aldimond - May 16, 2009
No more outs....
JUST END IT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
sanantonecub - May 16, 2009
On the bright side...
LaTroy Hawkins in to pitch.
Bricks and Ivy - May 16, 2009
i doubt that he has ever made a scoreless appearance at wrigley field
murphymj - May 16, 2009
Now THAT MF owes us!
Reddevil - May 16, 2009
After last inning, Gregg's ERA went from 3.86 to 6.06
Good grief.
hip2bsquare - May 16, 2009
getting no outs will do that to a man's era...
murphymj - May 16, 2009
who's left in our pen?
Cotts??
plenz - May 16, 2009
Patton, too
Ascanio
Clutch16 - May 16, 2009
In Gregg's defense
this is only his second blown save all year. its going to happen.
CubsFan87 - May 16, 2009
I'd still love to slap him right across the face
calicubfan - May 16, 2009
against the freakin' astros?
you do not let that happen
murphymj - May 16, 2009
yes
b/c they’ve never scored a run, ever.
Allie - May 16, 2009
how's it a blown save when it was never a save situation?
sanantonecub - May 16, 2009
my bad
CubsFan87 - May 16, 2009
It sure ain't a hold
Clutch16 - May 16, 2009
Actually it wasn't even a blown save
But what a blow up
gizmo6d9 - May 16, 2009
Yes but
It takes a special talent to make a game that wasn’t a save situation into one in which you can blow a save
Hilary Lee - May 16, 2009
Except
It wasn’t a save situation…
Craig in South Bend - May 16, 2009
technicality
by a freaking run
CubsFan87 - May 16, 2009
true
but a 4 run lead blown the way he blew it is a bitter pill
Gibbon Jockey - May 16, 2009
Nice try
but that outing couldn’t have been more disastrous.
Reddevil - May 16, 2009
It wasn't a blown save, he came in 4 runs up
Also, he’s just not lights out. He can’t be counted on to win with a lead in the ninth. That is troubling.
slcathena - May 16, 2009
That's what I always thought. His stuff doesn't appear to be as good as it should be for a closer.
zevkalman - May 16, 2009
So if he shuts it down in the ninth
eight or nine times in a row, then blows it once, that means he can’t be counted on in the ninth?
Odd logic, that.
Not Bruce Froemming - May 16, 2009
That does not happen.
5 earned on no outs? That happens to one highly paid MLB closer maybe one time a season.
D98 - May 16, 2009
4 earned - sorry

But, I’ll take it!!!!!!!!!!!
salparadise23 - May 16, 2009
forcing him to make that throw
is the right move. a right-handed thrower running to his left…that is a hard to play to make
murphymj - May 16, 2009
And Pence is terrible on D
I’d challenge him 10 out of 10 times in that situation.
Clutch16 - May 16, 2009
absolutely agree
murphymj - May 16, 2009
Totally agree.
slcathena - May 16, 2009
Poor Wells
He deserved the W but then so does Marshall for when they took him out in games with leads blown
by the bullpen.
Cards lost of course.
Doggie Stalker - May 16, 2009
i do not understand a word soriano says
but i love him
murphymj - May 16, 2009
Yes but
I really am troubled by the way he said “Hopefully we play like this again…” Uhm, with the exception of Gregg, please.
Hilary Lee - May 16, 2009
Clutch16 - May 16, 2009
yay milton!
Allie - May 16, 2009
Hi Milton!!!
slcathena - May 16, 2009
channeling sue: love this.
Emelie - May 16, 2009
I love you, Latroy Hawkins
Cubbiefaithful - May 16, 2009
I just knew we had a chance we he came in
And he OWES US!
salparadise23 - May 16, 2009
I love that MLB teams keep doing this with LaTroy.
D98 - May 16, 2009
Nice to see him win a game for us for a change.
Marshall picks up the W, right?
Vermont Cubs Fan - May 16, 2009
Yep.
zevkalman - May 16, 2009
lol.
He owes us a few more of those…
slcathena - May 16, 2009
And Marshall gets the make-up win
This one makes up for the time he went 7 innings of 1 ER ball and Heilman gave up, what, 7 earned?
D98 - May 16, 2009
5 ER, I think
That game was on my birthday. :(
hip2bsquare - May 16, 2009
I guess.
Still feel bad for Wells though.
Hope he’s got 6 more scoreless innings in him. Kid deserves a win.
slcathena - May 16, 2009
This is the second straight game...
…where the bullpen gave his first ML win away
calicubfan - May 16, 2009
I know.
That is totally unacceptable.
slcathena - May 16, 2009
Heilman should buy him a drink!
He’s been involved in both games
calicubfan - May 16, 2009
Where's dtpollitt?
He needs to post his picture of the walkoff celebration!
Vermont Cubs Fan - May 16, 2009
might be taking or writing a final at KU
thermal54 - May 16, 2009
I should get a Scales jersey. Maybe Clutche has one for me :-)
zevkalman - May 16, 2009
I'd be down for a scales jersey.
That kid rocks.
slcathena - May 16, 2009
ROY?!
just kidding.
xene - May 16, 2009
lol.
Wouldn’t that be a story. ;)
But nah…just a great utility guy with a killer attitude.
slcathena - May 16, 2009
Do you think they'll make one?
I’d buy it…
Hilary Lee - May 16, 2009
I would too.
Honestly, if I were them I’d make one. It’s a great story, it’s gone national, I think people would buy it.
slcathena - May 16, 2009
I suppose if they don't
We could get those custom jerseys with his name and number right?
Hilary Lee - May 16, 2009
for like 200 bucks
Allie - May 16, 2009
Oh
Ouch
Hilary Lee - May 16, 2009
How loud were the boos for Gregg?
I didn’t have the game on TV
calicubfan - May 16, 2009
LOUD
murphymj - May 16, 2009
GOOD!
calicubfan - May 16, 2009
Loud
Hilary Lee - May 16, 2009
if radio is any indication
they were LOUD
Gibbon Jockey - May 16, 2009
Deafening.
slcathena - May 16, 2009
Have a great Saturday night everybody
Enjoy the Cub Win
murphymj - May 16, 2009
See ya!
slcathena - May 16, 2009
Heilman gets the blown save there
weird.
Allie - May 16, 2009
Technically true.
He came in less than 4 down, and didn’t win.
slcathena - May 16, 2009
but weren't all the runs credited to gregg?
seems like gregg should be at fault for getting into that mess to begin with.
Allie - May 16, 2009
I don't think it matters who the runs were credited to in the case of a save.
It matters that they came in at all. Hence the blown save goes to Heilman, not Gregg.
slcathena - May 16, 2009
Not saying it's right, just saying that's my understanding.
slcathena - May 16, 2009
I guess that makes sense.
but still. i blame gregg. :-P
Allie - May 16, 2009
Cubs Win, and I missed the fkin game AUGH@@@
Cubbie-Tim - May 16, 2009
be glad you missed the 9th.
it wasn’t pretty on gameday… can’t imagine watching it.
Allie - May 16, 2009
You didn't mn\iss much.
We blew a 4-0 lead in the ninth, but won on a walkoff RBI single by Soriano.
Vermont Cubs Fan - May 16, 2009
You didn't miss much*
Typo central up there.
Vermont Cubs Fan - May 16, 2009
It was great. Until the top of the 9th.
The bottom of the 9th was just a relief.
slcathena - May 16, 2009
No Drew, so someone's gotta say it: Alfonso Soriano has
Clutch16 - May 16, 2009
:)
Thank God.
slcathena - May 16, 2009
I thought he didn't get hits when it mattered?
Allie - May 16, 2009
Let's just keep that little fact to ourselves
Don’t tell LaTroy.
Clutch16 - May 16, 2009
Lou's Post-Game Presser
starts by praising Wells: “He’s pitched 2 great games, and he doesn’t have a win yet. But if he continues to pitch like that, he’s gonna get a bunch of wins.”
Gregg: “In his defense he hadn’t pitched in a while. He needed to pitch even if the score had been 8 to nothing.”
Reddevil - May 16, 2009
He also addressed getting into it with a fan
anybody see what happened?
Gibbon Jockey - May 16, 2009
what did he say?
I only saw the tail end when he came back into the dugout.
slcathena - May 16, 2009
GAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He defended Gregg’s performance?! Are you F’in Kidding me, Lou?
slcathena - May 16, 2009
What's he gonna do? Throw his closer under the bus?
Not gonna happen.
Clutch16 - May 16, 2009
This.
The manager defends his players in public and lights a fire under them in private.
aldimond - May 16, 2009
And since Danny-boy's absent
Clutch16 - May 16, 2009
look at you
on the ball!!
that picture makes me realize how much I miss Rami.
Allie - May 16, 2009
And that Sori hops for things other than fly balls
Clutch16 - May 16, 2009
<3 Rami.
He’ll be back. Just in time for the second half.
slcathena - May 16, 2009
I hope so
I’ve had the shoulder injury he had. Or something close. And I didn’t respond to rehab and had to have surgery. And took me about a year to get back to “normal”.
So I’m nervous.
Allie - May 16, 2009
Don't worry.
Jimmyeatworld - May 16, 2009
ARam had surgery?
How’d I miss that?
calicubfan - May 16, 2009
No
he’s going through rehab.
Allie - May 16, 2009
YAY! :)
slcathena - May 16, 2009
Definitely works today.
Walk-off win.
Vermont Cubs Fan - May 16, 2009
On the confrontation with the fan
“He didn’t like the fact I kept Gregg in there. I told him to enjoy the game and let me manage it… with a few stronger words.”
Reddevil - May 16, 2009
Ha!
Clutch16 - May 16, 2009
Good for Lou...
Gregg obviously had an off day, it happens.
Jimmyeatworld - May 16, 2009
Jimmay!
Goodie1969 - May 16, 2009
Goodie!
Jimmyeatworld - May 16, 2009
Miss ya brougham!
Jimmyeatworld - May 16, 2009
You too, man.
This was a fun game to watch. Gotta love the early starts. I wasn’t too nervous about this one. I called it during Gregg’s tee-ball fest. This team is starting to bring my faith back around.
Goodie1969 - May 16, 2009
Quite prescient!
Jimmyeatworld - May 16, 2009
Something tells me it was the booz talking
calicubfan - May 16, 2009
How do the Cubs expect to win down the stretch...
…or in October, for that matter, with these clowns in the bullpen?
calicubfan - May 16, 2009
They'll probably make a deal for better clowns before the trade deadline.
Well, I hope so, at least.
hip2bsquare - May 16, 2009
I think we need to make some bullpen moves.
slcathena - May 16, 2009
Marmol looked lights out today!
Struck out the side in the 8th
calicubfan - May 16, 2009
Guz did his job in the 7th, as well.
Clutch16 - May 16, 2009
Yes, let's keep him
But who can we make deals for?
Vermont Cubs Fan - May 16, 2009
This game
Was very similar to this game. Played out in similar fashion, and Soriano also came through in that one..
Vermont Cubs Fan - May 16, 2009
If there were *ever* a time for official scorer intervention, that was it.
Giving Howry that win was obnoxious. He allowed both inherited runners to score, and tacked on 3 more earned runs of his own!
D98 - May 16, 2009
please. you're bringing back some very bad memories.
Emelie - May 16, 2009
All right, y'all
Bit of a nail-biter there, but a W is a W. I’m gonna head to East Atlanta and get my drink on.
Go Cubs!
Clutch16 - May 16, 2009
Later!
I’m off too. Going to play ball with the pup outside.
Allie - May 16, 2009
c-ya girl...
Jimmyeatworld - May 16, 2009
Aaaand we're back
sanantone was whereing my appetite, so I found a joint that serves Chimay. Tasty!
Clutch16 - May 16, 2009
*whetting
Stupid phone.
Clutch16 - May 16, 2009
Let's keep in mind that Lou made the right managerial moves in the bottom of the 9th...
AND THAT THE CUBS WON THIS GAME!
Jimmyeatworld - May 16, 2009
Ok but the ones in the top of the 9th are suspect.
Doggie Stalker - May 16, 2009
Gregg had an off day, what are ya gonna do?
And three good hitters for the Astros started the mess in the first place. What, ya think Fat Elvis, El Cabao, and Miggy are gonna be held down all day? I know you don’t like Lou though, so I’m not surprised you feel this way…
Jimmyeatworld - May 16, 2009
I'm heading out too.
Going to meet the parents for dinner and “Angels and Demons.” Anyone got a review for me?
Vermont Cubs Fan - May 16, 2009
c-ya vermont...
Jimmyeatworld - May 16, 2009
Chi Trib
said it was Hank’s worst role ever and gave it 1 1/2 stars.
Allie - May 16, 2009
Trib says "one of the most tedious and boring movies of all time."
I’m sure it’s not that bad.
D98 - May 16, 2009
The Trib is always
Really a downer on summer movies
Hilary Lee - May 16, 2009
Yeah.
Excuse yourself for a bathroom break and go to Star Trek instead.
Goodie1969 - May 16, 2009
I guess that’s really more of a plan than a review, but I stand by it.
Goodie1969 - May 16, 2009
Nice try
I’ve already seen Star Trek
Vermont Cubs Fan - May 16, 2009
Davinci code was pretty bad
so I suspect that A&D isn’t any better.
propheteer - May 16, 2009
Coming in late
It’s pretty amusing to see Gregg give up 4 runs and no outs recorded, while Heilman gets the blown save for giving up no runs.
propheteer - May 16, 2009
The oddities of baseball.
Also, Marshall gets the make-up win for his scratched start yesterday, and he only got one out.
Goodie1969 - May 16, 2009
cubs
the cubs cant always make it look it easy. we all know that. but gregg was disgracefull. i hope lou does not stick with this guy through thick and thin.
NOMAR - May 16, 2009
I still wonder
if Lou isn’t punishing Marmol for going to the WBC instead of staying home like Lou wanted him too. I like Marmol as a closer. (Or more precisely, I like Marmol better than Gregg as our closer).
