Due to yesterday's rainout, Sean Marshall, who was to have started today, will work out of the pen this weekend and will start next Thursday against St. Louis. This is actually fine, as the unscheduled day off yesterday will give Lou a little extra flexibility in the bullpen today and tomorrow. The Astros will also shuffle their pitching rotation; yesterday's scheduled Astros starter, Brian Moehler, will start tomorrow vs. Rich Harden. This is good news too, as Moehler is more suited for the waiver wire than anyone's starting rotation.
Lou Piniella reminded reporters that he, too, spent several years in the minor leagues before making it as a major league regular at age 25 in 1969, when he was named AL Rookie of the Year with the Royals. Maybe that's why he's willing to give a guy like Bobby Scales a shot. Here's Lou's minor league record, which includes three full years at Triple-A. Remember that this was in the early years of the expansion era; the four-team expansion of 1969 allowed guys like that, who otherwise might have been stuck in the minors, to get major league jobs.
And if the Seattle Pilots, who chose Lou from the Cleveland Indians in the 1968 expansion draft, hadn't been shortsighted and traded him to Kansas City just before Opening Day in 1969, Lou might have played out his career as... a Milwaukee Brewer.
The three top teams in the NL Central -- the Cubs, Cardinals and Brewers -- all got rained out Friday. The Reds lost to the Padres in San Diego, so the Cubs moved into sole possession of third place, half a game ahead of Cincinnati, and half a game behind both Milwaukee & St. Louis.

When I looked at those numbers, I thought, "That can't be Roy Oswalt", but it is. He's had a bad year. He threw pretty well against the Cubs on Opening Day, but the Cubs won anyway. He's had a couple of good starts and several mediocre ones and the nine homers in 44 innings is... well, a lot. While it seems like he was always beating the Cubs, the truth is that his 12-12, 3.86 lifetime record against them is below his career norms. So, this isn't as big a mismatch as you might think.
Randy Wells threw well in his first major league start last Friday. He'll be facing the Astros for the first time and has never faced anyone on their current roster. If you think those words sound familiar, they should. I just copied/pasted them from yesterday's preview.
Today's game is not available on EI, although it will be on MLB.TV. It is subject to Bud's Stupid Blackout Policy, because for some reason Fox Sports and MLB think that allowing people to watch games from noon to 3 pm CT would infringe on their 3 to 6 pm CT timeslot. This is idiotic thinking, but YOU try to tell them that. For today's other games see the MLB.com Mediacenter.

Had to go out and get ‘The Hits’ today.

Jerk indeed. I guess the ’wagon is better than Milli Vanilli or Kenny Loggins, so you can look at it that way…

So the game will or will not be available on mlb.tv?
Wording in the original post is a bit vague, is it covered by the one of the general weekend blackouts? Or is it just the Chicago blackout?
This inane blackout policy confounds me to no end.
cublessinmilwaukee - May 16, 2009
It's subject to MLB blackout rules
Essentially, if your computer’s IP address lives in an area deemed worthy of receiving of Cubs, you will see Cubs (and nothing else). If not, you’ll watch what Bud wants you to watch.
Stupid, stupid MLB.
Clutch16 - May 16, 2009
I'm not proposing that you break the law
whatsoever because I love the law.
chilango2 - May 16, 2009
It amazes me how out of touch the owners/Bud are
Instead of trying to gain more money via new technology, they’re going to fight old technology as long as possible, to both their and their fans detriment.
So now, you piss off the fans who would be perfectly willing to pay to watch, and many of them will find a way to watch where you get nothing.
This would seem to be pretty simple math.
chitownhawkeye - May 16, 2009
It's prevalent in a lot of industries
But MLB definitely takes the cake.
chilango2 - May 16, 2009
Rule #1 in any business should be
Make it easy for people to give you money.
Stupid, stupid MLB.
Clutch16 - May 16, 2009
What the hell?
Have they taught in American business schools for the past 50 years? There seems to be an epidemic of bad business sense in this country.
I ask because my degrees are in broadcasting and poli sci, so they have only marginally more worth.
Chris Dobbertean - May 16, 2009
You know,
You could just open up all games, charging people a little extra if their team is not local. That would help them make money. Sadly, it seems like they can’t figure it out. I’d pay just a little extra if I could watch the Cubs.
Vermont Cubs Fan - May 16, 2009
Exactly
People are happy to pay $12+ a month to get HBO to watch programming of dubious quality. Charging $20 extra to get all your team’s games doesn’t sound completely outrageous to me.
chilango2 - May 16, 2009
A price I'd be willing to pay.
I’d have to find a way to watch the games (I work afternoons), but I would definitely pay a fee (such as an extra $20) to watch the Cubs, who are not a local team where I live.
Vermont Cubs Fan - May 16, 2009
The NCAA used to limit...
March Madness On Demand to out-of-market games. Now they let everyone have access to all 63 games, presumably for people stuck in offices on Round 1/2 weekend. But that’s the type of decision that would make too much sense for Bud and his boys.
Chris Dobbertean - May 16, 2009
Yeah, it's the kind of decision that requires presence of mind.
I’m glad the NCAA did that. If only MLB took a page out of their book, but it makes too much sense to do it.
Vermont Cubs Fan - May 16, 2009
how does that work?
daily2b - May 16, 2009
I'm not advocating usage of anything whatsoever
but uses a network of peers to place your IP location anywhere in the world.
chilango2 - May 16, 2009
would you still need mlb.tv?
daily2b - May 16, 2009
It would appear so.
Clutch16 - May 16, 2009
You all should check if you can get the game on MLB
I can and I live in the greater Boston area…

I look great in that photo! You captured my essence.

hahaha....and apparently well fed, too....
carmen_fanzone - May 16, 2009
I am sick and tired...
…of not being able to watch my team on Saturdays. Thanks MLB! The Angels and Rangers sounds like a really exciting game. Bastards!
calicubfan - May 16, 2009
Catch up to 80 games a week, with up to 40 in HD
With MLB EXTRA INNINGSĀ® you’ll be able to follow your favorite team from opening day to October no matter where you live.
Truth in advertising, anyone?
Clutch16 - May 16, 2009
Especially when your cable company...
doesn’t provide HD feeds. Thanks for nothing, Comcrap!
Chris Dobbertean - May 16, 2009
Can't wait to get rid of them.
chitownhawkeye - May 16, 2009
...and only 200 bucks!
daily2b - May 16, 2009
I'm stuck with Mets @ Giants.
Fairly good team (NYM) against a doormat (SF).
Vermont Cubs Fan - May 16, 2009
If I were in SF today
I’d be going to that game. My bar there’s running a bus to the park. $40 gets you a bleacher seat, a ride to and from, and all the booze you can guzzle on the bus.
A truly staggering value!
Clutch16 - May 16, 2009
Rich Hill starts today for the O's
I posted this LATE last night when only Canberra and I were left. I really wish him luck and lets get us that PTBNL
Doggie Stalker - May 16, 2009
Which Oriole could we possibly want?
Nope – can’t think of a one.
Clutch16 - May 16, 2009
That's funny,
I can think of about seven Orioles I would want to be on the Cub’s roster. Unfortunately none of them will be coming to Chicago anytime soon.
14theofleury - May 16, 2009
Would be those the ones we don't already have?
Andy: Hey, Jim – Wanna just trade teams, straight-up?
Jim: Can I get cash, too?
Andy: Of course!
Jim: I get to keep my stars, right?
Andy: Sure!
Jim: Done.
Clutch16 - May 16, 2009
Oh this one is such a set up
Brian Roberts of course.
Doggie Stalker - May 16, 2009
Never heard of the guy :P
Clutch16 - May 16, 2009
Adam Jones has been one of the best players in all of baseball this year, as has Nick Mar-kick ass.
14theofleury - May 16, 2009
Wow
I mean, wow. I would like to see that game very much indeed.
I hope he’s successful but expect the Royals to light him up early and often.

Ex-Cub Alert:
I went to the Rockies/Pirates game last night at PNC Park. I was about 10 rows behind Spilborgh’s catch. Anyways, Murton had a pinch hit, rbi single last night. Just thought that was pretty cool.

Alas the Rockies are barely letting him play
but he hits well when he does.

OT: This conversation is lighting up the boards on my aviation forum
Airliners.net. Apparently a plane from Nashville to Milwaukee almost ran out of fuel. The Madison State Journal covers the story from the baseball perspective, as their prized 3B prospect was onboard.
My question: can we use this to rattle him? j/k
chilango2 - May 16, 2009
Just have Geo start making "sputtering engine" noises when he steps into the batter's box?
Clutch16 - May 16, 2009
Stupid blackout rules
Saturday afternoon might be the best day of the week to watch a ball game, yet the idiots at MLB refuse to allow that to happen.
kanderber - May 16, 2009
It's a conspiracy
Between MLB, The Home Depot, and your wife.
Now get out and do some yardwork!
Clutch16 - May 16, 2009
What channel does direct tv have it on?
chitownhawkeye - May 16, 2009
CSN,
So if (and only if) you live in Chicago, it will be in the 600s, around 640, IIRC.
Vermont Cubs Fan - May 16, 2009
665 and 676
chilango2 - May 16, 2009
Thanks
just got it at my GFs house. Can’t find anything
chitownhawkeye - May 16, 2009
TWSS
Or is that too cruel?
Clutch16 - May 16, 2009
Nah
But @chitown The pregame is on on CSNChicago, ch. 665. FSHouston, ch. 676 is blacked out for me.
chilango2 - May 16, 2009
Nah
pretty funny :-)
chitownhawkeye - May 16, 2009
winner!
Emelie - May 16, 2009
Wind blowing in from right field
per CSNChicago.
chilango2 - May 16, 2009
This will make the pitchers happy
for the 20 minutes it stays that way. Wasn’t it Marquis who was pitching last year and during BP the wind was blowing something fierce and he was in the club house when someone ran in and told him it was now blowing in hard. He thought they were kidding.
Doggie Stalker - May 16, 2009
The forecast suggests it'll stay that way
and the speed is pretty impressive. “Gusts to 40 MPH.”
chilango2 - May 16, 2009

bradley won’t be able to
tim815 - May 16, 2009

On MLB Network right now, 1991 Cubs vs. Pitt
Classic extra inning slufest. Dave Smith is coming now to try and save the game.
Itchy - May 16, 2009
Would someone please check my math?
After 25 years of remote fandom, I’ve got a ticket to the first game of the Dodgers homestand on the 28th. I worked out the sked by rotation and I marked that game as a Rich Harden start — which is just good luck, I figured, since he’s one of the two pitchers on our roster that I most enjoy watching.
Do I have that right? What are the odds that rotation will stay intact between now and then?
xarker - May 16, 2009
WGN listeners... who's the catcher they are interviewing? Geo?
Emelie - May 16, 2009
Bradley?
Clutch16 - May 16, 2009

Emelie - May 16, 2009

Emelie - May 16, 2009
Yet another game NOT on WGN.
Arbusto - May 16, 2009
Not on WGN...
But it is on the Armed Forces Radio and Television Network.
However, I’m still watching on MLB.tv hooked up to the big screen since the quality is better even without Nexdef lagging everything.
