Jake Fox continues to rake and Tony Thomas is nursing a sore hamstring.
Iowa Cubs
After scoring 15, 18 and 17 runs in their first three games in Colorado Springs, the Iowa Cubs could only manage four runs tonight and that wasn't enough as the Cubs lost to the Colorado Springs Sky Sox, 8-4.
Mitch Atkins tough season continued tonight as he surrendered eight runs in 4.1 innings. Atkins gave up seven hits, two of which were home runs. Atkins walked five and struck out three. One of the runs against Atkins was unearned.
Kevin Hart provided 2.2 innings of shutout relief. He was touched for two hits, but struck out three and didn't walk a batter.
First Third baseman Jake Fox hit his minor league leading 16th home run tonight in a 1 for 3 effort. It was a two-run shot in the sixth inning. Fox also walked once.
Left fielder.First baseman Doug Deeds also homered, his third on the year. Deeds was 2 for 5 with two runs scored and two RBI.
Catcher Chris Robinson and shortstop Andres Blanco were both 2 for 4.
Tennessee Smokies
The Smokies were crushed by the West Tennessee Diamond Jaxx, 9-2.
Marcos Mateo started and got his first loss in AA. Mateo gave up three runs on eight hits. He didn't walk a batter and struck out four.
Right fielder Richie Robnett hit a solo home run in the sixth inning. Robnett was 1 for 3.
Daytona Cubs
Daytona was the Cubs' only winner today as they came from behind to sink the Clearwater Threshers, 7-2.
Rafael Dolis started, but he only lasted three innings, although that's not all that short for Dolis who is coming back from arm surgery. Dolis allowed two runs on three hits. He walked three and struck out two.
Henry Williamson had a strong relief outing to pick up the win. He allowed no runs and only one hit over three innings. Williamson did walk two but he struck out four.
DH (I guess he still has to beware of walls) Marwin Gonzalez was 2 for 5 with two runs scored. Third baseman Jovan Rosa was 3 for 5. Center fielder Francisco Guzman was 2 for 4 with a walk and a stolen base. Guzman scored once.
Peoria Chiefs
Were rained out, so they probably spent the day listening to Green Day's 21st Century Breakdown. Which is what I'm going to go do now. I think the last piece of music I bought the day it came out was The Clash's Combat Rock. Yes, that was on vinyl, yes, I still have it and yes, it has the "2000 Flushes" commercial on it. You hardcore Clash fans know what I'm talking about.

Fox
According to the box score Fox played third tonight. This would have been about his 5th career game at third as a professional. It will be interesting to see if this was just a one time occurance or something is going on.

Yeah
Thanks for reading so closely. I’ve corrected it.
It’s probably an experiment to get all the outfielders into the game. But who knows. Maybe the order is to see if Fox really can’t play third base. Couldn’t hurt.

Hopefully Fox can play 3rd
It would definitely help him get a call up and if he could hit with half of his AAA power in the bigs till A-Ram returns it could be huge

Josh, this is nothing personal...
And I do like the Wraps. But, really? ‘Combat Rock’ and the latest from Green Day? Gotta work on your punk there, youngster. You’re on the Left Coast, no? Start with Dead Kennedys, end with The Mr. T Experience. Thank me later.
Clutch16 - May 16, 2009
Excuse me
I didn’t say those were the only records I owned. I said they were the only ones I bought on the day they were released.
I bet I was listening to the Dead Kennedys before you were. Well, unless you were on the West Coast in 1980 or so.
And while Combat Rock is an uneven record, c’mon. It’s still pretty good and I bought it the day it was released, so I hadn’t heard it yet. I was 16 years old and The Clash were coming off London Calling and Sandinista! It was a good bet. And it doesn’t suck. (That’s “Cut the Crap.” That sucks.)
But I’m absolutely not a punk purist. I had enough of those people back in 1983, thank you very much. ;-)

In 1980, I was still in Manitowoc
And wondering how long it would be until the training wheels could come off my Schwinn. :P
Not a punk purist by any stretch of the imagination, but I do appreciate the genre (probably more than I should). The recommendation for the Mr. T Experience stands, however. Start with ‘Love is Dead’ or ‘Revenge is Sweet and So are You’, and grin along to some of the best heartbroke punk to ever come out of the Bay Area.

I was in Madison
You should have stopped by and said “Hi”
You got me remembering a listening party that I had in HS at a friends house where we listened to Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables and X’s Los Angeles. That must have been 1981 or so. Might have been ’82.
So thanks for the trip down memory lane. :-)
Thing is, I love good punk—although I prefer it a little poppier than some. (People forget the Sex Pistols could write a great hook.) I also love great jazz, think the Beach Boys were geniuses and Buddy Holly was god.

combat rock
one of the best rock albums of all time and not even the best clash album.
horace tarbox - May 16, 2009
Really?
I like it, but while I’d rate London Calling as maybe the greatest album ever and the Clash’s first album (both versions) and Sandinista! (mess as it is) as fabulous, I think Combat Rock is really uneven. Of course, I really haven’t listened to it in a few years. I probably should.

Fox shifting to 3rd
is an obvious indication the Cubs want to get his bat at the big league level and are trying to find an immediate way to do so, hopefully he can hold his own there but i have my doubts
DartmouthCubsFan - May 16, 2009
I would think
the Cubs do too, or they would have tried that two years ago.
