It's often difficult to see all the retired number flags because the wind doesn't always blow hard enough so that they all fly fairly straight.
This past weekend, it was windy enough for David to get this photo of the RF foul pole flags (he'll try to get the other one soon).

BW is on the RF pole,
I know he played both left and right (right early in his career, left later) for the Cubs. Which position did he play the most as a Cub? I’m guessing left, is he on the wrong pole?
BatCubFan - May 18, 2009
He did play more left field.
But, he is the only outfielder whose number has been retired by the Cubs… so I’m guessing either foul pole would be suitable.
Al Yellon - May 18, 2009
originally it was Banks and Williams
and with Banks being best remembered as a SS, it makes sense that Banks was on the LF and Williams on the RF to even it out. As they added Santo he was 3B (LF) then Sandberg who was 2B (RF) and then 31 went to both.
Am I saying I am correct at all, no. It is just my guestimate
Cubbie-Tim - May 18, 2009
ok, same question on Ernie
Did he play more SS or more 1B? Not sure, but he moved early 60’s, 61 or 62, he might have had more appearences as a first baseman.

how often?
do the flags become tattered and replaced???
anyone know if there is ever a memorabilia “auction” of sorts of equipment/nostalgia in/around wrigley by the team?
12to23to17 - May 18, 2009
Don't know how often they get replaced
but they are auctioned during Cubs Convention silent auctions and given as prizes and such.

You Thought Baseball Had Issues
From the AP: “The Belgian bodybuilding championship has been canceled after doping officials showed up and all the competitors fled.”

This just in!
Two of the bodybuilders were captured when they tried to flee through the same exit and became wedged together in the doorframe. A gallon of lard and a high-pressure hose later, they were knocked free, booked, drug-tested and banned from the sport for life.

Maddux's name will never look right up there
Great pic, though!

Wait
until he is a first ballot hall of famer. In 20 years it will look just fine, as it does today.

Does this mean...
I have to change my name?

Rooftop flags
Before last Friday’s game was rained out I noticed that the upper deck’s rooftop flags for Maddux and Jenkins had been replaced by a red and a white generic Cubs flag. The flags flying last Friday from left field to right field were:
So there are three spots available on the roof (there had been a single red Cubs flag earlier this season). Any nominees?
Since a uniform number is not required to be honored on the rooftop flags (e.g. PKW), some pre-1932 Cubs might be honored.
AlSpangler - May 18, 2009
Well, if you're going to honor pre-1932 Cubs...
… start with Mordecai Brown and Frank Chance.
Al Yellon - May 19, 2009
Well, can't we say
Andre Dawson’s # is “semi-retired?”
San Diego Smooth Jazz Man - May 18, 2009
I'm sure I'll get hell for this but I don't know why Maddux's number was retired.
He won 1 cy young with the cubs right? Seems like his number was retired more for what he did in Atlanta. Just my opinion. Love the guy tho.
