1984

1984 memories jump

Hi everyone! So far, so good, eh?
Except for being at work

Yes.

Why do we sing take me out to the ballgame when we’re already there?

Tradition. Like YMCA. Oh, wait...
Nice seats, Zeke
Too. Many. Imponderables.
lol...a shout out to denise
WTF!?!???!?!?!?!!!!!!!!!!!!!

MLB.TV JUST KNOCKED ME AWAY FROM THE STRETCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

BASTARDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

not carrying the game anymore?
I'm watching on MLB.tv....

It cut to a “commercial break” at the start of the stretch, which it shouldn’t do.

It always does though on my version. :-)
I see. gotcha. that stinks
you can say that again
Ha ha. They always do that, doncha know?

BTW, I have a couple of cold Newcastle Brown Ale bottles in my refrigerator I’m saving for later….

Yesterday they didn't and it was nice

Last year they almost never did and it was also nice.

About to throw some Ale in the fridge for 20 minutes to get it to “cellar” temp.

Lilly looks awesome today,

what happened on that balk?

seemed like he thought someone called time

so he stopped, then started throwing again

head scratcher
both of his balks were pretty unconventional today
Both?

Shows what I get for not watchin’.

Yep

Earlier, he threw to first as Lee was breaking to cover a bunt attempt, so with first base unoccupied, it was a balk. And then there was the second one, where he stopped his stride and throw and then resumed it.

Cetera sang the 7th inning stretch for some game we came back on....

….last year? year before?

I’m thinking it was Colorado, but maybe that was the Blackhawk’s guys…

I can't remember who it was against

but yes, Cetera did sing before a big rally.

Loved him with Chicago, not a big fan of his solo stuff.

Hoff walks, Gathright in to PR
What do you know, Gathright still has a role

he’s in to pinch-run for Hoffpauir.

But not for Z

The mind boggles.

Still shaking my head over that one.
Nats Win! Cards Lose!!!!

Hip Hop Hooray!!!!

Now it's time to hold up the other end of the bargain
Now for the Cubs and Bulls to win!
BB doing his audition for TMZ

Asks Cetera about a brawl with Dodger fans in 1969. LOL.

Gathright!!!! >.<
Gathright pulls a Cedeno
slides past the bag
gathwright ran too fast...he would have made that easily
booooooooooooooo
Gathright pulls a Cedeno!

overslides second on the steal and is out.

Did he jump over the bag?
that would have been better

carried too much speed into the headfirst slide and couldn’t hold the corner.

At least Cedeno knew how to swing a bat.
true.

and he could play 3 infield spots.

Why is Gathwrong still on this team?
He's doing his best to make the decision a no-brainer
Because Lou can't pinch-run.
Another question: how long will he be on this team?
Gathwrong

NICE!!!

I said something like that

Back here in an overflow against the Cardinals last week.

and it was nice there too!

i

 just didn’t see it.

It's okay

Hardly anyone saw it.

NO BRAINER

Lou wanted him and they are not going to admit any mistakes…..Some day he will jusy go away…

I really can't

like Gathright.

reads like a haiku

poetically true

you are both poets

and didn’t know it

End of inning.....fly out to short
Can we trade for Cedeno

Gathright straight up for him.

Ronny wasn't exactly a brainiac out there

either.

true, but who else could we get?
I'd rather have a dumb versatile player than a dumb pinch runner.
I'm not going to get too worked up

about the 25th guy on the roster.

Cardinals lose 6-1

So it’s a good day already.

Fly out to RF, 1 down
oh no Gathwrong is still in the game!
he's decent enough in CF
I've heard he's a good center fielder.
that's why he pinch ran
But when

you are on the team primarily for your ability to run the bases and as a defensive sub, you need to stop getting picked off and oversliding bases when you get an opportunity to contribute. He hasn’t done anything for the team thus far. Hopefully, that will change.

no argument here
Decent defensive CF

I hear he’s fast.

that curve was pitch #101
the one Hermida tried to duck into

He looked like a Little Leaguer seeing a breaking ball for the first time.

give that man the Golden Sombrero
One of the great baseball terms...hahaha
Golden Sombrero!
Golden Sombrero for Hermida

ends the 8th.

WHere does the term golden sombrero come from?
and what does it mean?
IT MEANS FOR YOU

To get your flag ready to go up,,,,,,,

yes, sir! :-D
Since 3 strikeouts are a hat trick

people decided 4 K’s should get a bigger hat, like a sombrero.

thanks
no problem

5 strikeouts is a platinum sombrero, while 6 is a Horn (after Sam Horn).

technically, 6 is a titanium sombrero

Horn did 5 in an extra-inning game

gotcha. thanks.
Wikipedia is our friend
If a batter gets to the point of getting 6, then it's on the manager for not pinch hitting.

Clearly a guy K-ing 5 times in one day is having a bad day at the plate…

Andruw Jones did it a year or so ago, and Geoff Jenkins did it in a 17 inning game.
Andruw struck out 5 times in 9 innings and Jenkins 6 times in 17 innings.
Ugh. Just ugh.
didn't Soriano have 4 or 5 Ks the day he hit the GW homer in Milwaukee?
and the golden part is what, exactly?
I mean, why not a BROWN sombrero, considering...

…I’m just asking….

beats me.

Maybe because striking out 4 times in a game should be shiny and stand out in the box score.

you are actually celebrating the pitching accomplishment

not the batting futility, thus the metal goes up in value

well that makes sense, I suppose.
OK. I'll buy that (kinda), but it could be four different pitchers...

…so it’s still more on the batter it seems…

I think this stuff was thought up when pitchers were MEN and actually

throwing 10-12 complete games in a year was not unusual.

THe could do it because they didn't endlessly nibble around the plate and throw 100 pitches in 4 innings.

Jenkins, Koltman, Hands, – those guys usually finished what they started. 25 CGs a year was the norm.

THE=They. Koltman= Holtzman. Geez. Early this am...
Thank you, Mr. Ted ... a fine inning
10 K's for Lilly, inning over

does he pitch the 9th? Or is it Guzman time?

Bring on Guz!
10 K's for Lilly!!!!!
10 K's

for Lilly (so far)

Lilly

has been an animal today. Nice to be able to stay out of the pen for a change.

has he knocked over any catchers today?
Like this?

yeah, that'll do
104 pitches and due up in the bottom of the 8th

Will he stay in and finish the game?

I'd take him out

Put Heilman, maybe, in to finish.

Plus

there are no off days coming up where he could get an extra day of rest. Might as well save some bullets for the next start.

Right

That would be … Thursday in Houston, correct?

I believe so.
Well, he wasn't all that great last time in Houston

but his offense bailed him out. Hope for better things this time. Considering how he looked today, I’m optimistic.

I'd let him at least start the inning....
I'd send him out there

and have someone ready if he gets in trouble.

Nope

Z will pich hit for him.

Z to pinch hit for Lilly
Zambrano in the on-deck circle

to hit for Lilly.

...and stay in and pitch the 9th...

NOT…

Ok Z show us something!
Z K's...

That’s got to be a record……3 straight days a pitcher has pinch hit.

shades of TLR!....HA!
Perish the thought
Lance Parrish?
No, Larry Parrish
It could be David Parrish
I'm a Tigers fan so I prefer Lance
I have a soft spot for the Expos

Larry all the way.

David, son of Lance

played some minor league ball here in Indianapolis (though he’s on the minor league journeyman path now)

Is he a catcher like dad?

It was fun seeing Lance manage the Great Lakes Loons in Midland a couple of years ago. Got the chance to see him and chat for a few minutes when the Loons were in town to play the Lugnuts…

Heilman in for the 9th
I hope he is sharper

than he was his last time out.

Fonzie with a base hit to CF
Go Scrappy Power!

The former Mrs. Charlie Sheen?
It's so nice

in here today. I’m loving it.

kind of peaceful, huh?

And BLou left early…lol

not much to bitch

about today especially after Derrek his his homer

Nice, isn't it?

Funny how that works.

Winning does

wonderful things to people’s dispositions. Mine included.

Yes it does

and it would be nice fi they cheered for their team too not just coming in here to bitch.

BIG BONUS.....

For D.C. to beat the Cards today……Never thought that would happen….

Theriot K's

On to the ninth!

Riot starts with a bang today, and ends in a whimper...

K, inning over, ON TO THE 9TH!!!!

Nice pitch

have a seat Hanley.

Heilman with another K!!!

ON YOUR FEET!!!

Another K!!! Two down, one to go!!!!
Cantu K's

(Standing and clapping)

Cubs Win!!!!

it just got better!

Go Bulls!! Silence the Celtics.

…and Go Blackhawks too.

CUBS WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Cubs win!

Holy Cow…. Fly it!

Get the flag ready

Three K’s perhaps/

Heilman K's the side!!!!!
SIDE STRIKES OUT!

SING IT!!!!!!!!!!

cubs win!!!!!
CUBS WIN!!! CUBS WIN!!!

HOLY COW!

hooray! back to back Ws!
Sweet!

Oh, crap – I still gotta work. Anyway, Cubs Win!

have fun ;-)
Good job boys!

Now keep it going for a big day tomorrow…

GO CUBS GO!

Click it!!!

very cool!
It's in the spirit of our old friend Northsider

Who used to post a wavy flag which, when clicked, played “Go Cubs Go.” I tried looking for the flag recently, and couldn’t find it. I did find the playlist link, completely by chance.

a fine tribute indeed
Thanks.

I’d like it more if I could find a wavy “W” flag, but this is fine.

Here you go

Thanks

I’ll post that linking to the playlist I found the other day the next chance I get.

0 walks for the pitching staff

very nice to see.

Nice victory today

Got an early lead, tacked on a couple of runs and Lilly and Heilman were masterful.

With Z going tomorrow, I’m feeling good about taking 3 of 4.

Good to be back over .500 again!
hopefully, we have left .500 in the rearview mirror
Wow! Cubs win!! Cubs win!! Cubs win!! Cubs win!!

Missed the entire game b/c I worked overnight, and my body just woke me up… I’ll take it though! Another Riot HR?! Excelllent… Looks it was a fairly “Chicken Little” less thread. I missed you guys though. Nice fitting tribute to Northsider with the wavy W flag.

See what happens Jimmy

when you miss the game threads lol

I know LT! What am I the new negative good luck non thread poster?
I always go with what works....

But of course, it never lasts very long or the Cubs would have some really long winning streaks…

A few days ago,

I was flying from Vermont to Philadelphia, and there was a guy on the plane with a Cubs cap. He had tickets to Wrigley Field today. He saw a great game.

That is the best win of the year.

Hitting in bunches, especially with runners on. Lilly was the best I have seen him all season, even with the 1 hit display earlier in April. Lee showed some power. Theriot with the hot stick. Z going tomorrow gives me hope that we can take 3 out of 4, something I cannot remember doing to the Fish in quite some time, if at all.

I'd concur

This might be their best overall victory of the season.

Two observations.........................

Lee’s back with a huge HR and oops 3 K’s…not so impressive. Does the decline continue?

Hoffpauir goes 2 for 3 with a nice catch in RF. It’s too bad he doesn’t get the credit he deserves. He’s worked hard to become a decent RF’er, good 1st baseman, and a .300+ hitter.
