Earlier, he threw to first as Lee was breaking to cover a bunt attempt, so with first base unoccupied, it was a balk. And then there was the second one, where he stopped his stride and throw and then resumed it.
you are on the team primarily for your ability to run the bases and as a defensive sub, you need to stop getting picked off and oversliding bases when you get an opportunity to contribute. He hasn’t done anything for the team thus far. Hopefully, that will change.
It was fun seeing Lance manage the Great Lakes Loons in Midland a couple of years ago. Got the chance to see him and chat for a few minutes when the Loons were in town to play the Lugnuts…

sanantonecub - May 2, 2009
not carrying the game anymore?
Emelie - May 2, 2009
I'm watching on MLB.tv....
It cut to a “commercial break” at the start of the stretch, which it shouldn’t do.
sanantonecub - May 2, 2009
It always does though on my version. :-)
zevkalman - May 2, 2009
I see. gotcha. that stinks
Emelie - May 2, 2009
you can say that again
LT - May 2, 2009
Ha ha. They always do that, doncha know?
BTW, I have a couple of cold Newcastle Brown Ale bottles in my refrigerator I’m saving for later….
zevkalman - May 2, 2009
Yesterday they didn't and it was nice
Last year they almost never did and it was also nice.
About to throw some Ale in the fridge for 20 minutes to get it to “cellar” temp.
sanantonecub - May 2, 2009
Lilly looks awesome today,
what happened on that balk?
HoosierFan - May 2, 2009

Emelie - May 2, 2009
both of his balks were pretty unconventional today
Bill Potter - May 2, 2009
Both?
Shows what I get for not watchin’.
Clutch16 - May 2, 2009
Yep
Earlier, he threw to first as Lee was breaking to cover a bunt attempt, so with first base unoccupied, it was a balk. And then there was the second one, where he stopped his stride and throw and then resumed it.
Bill Potter - May 2, 2009
Cetera sang the 7th inning stretch for some game we came back on....
….last year? year before?
I’m thinking it was Colorado, but maybe that was the Blackhawk’s guys…
carmen_fanzone - May 2, 2009
I can't remember who it was against
but yes, Cetera did sing before a big rally.
Loved him with Chicago, not a big fan of his solo stuff.

aznsensation - May 2, 2009

Emelie - May 2, 2009
Gathright pulls a Cedeno!
overslides second on the steal and is out.
Bill Potter - May 2, 2009
Did he jump over the bag?
DGU - May 2, 2009
that would have been better
carried too much speed into the headfirst slide and couldn’t hold the corner.
Bill Potter - May 2, 2009
At least Cedeno knew how to swing a bat.
zevkalman - May 2, 2009
true.
and he could play 3 infield spots.
Bill Potter - May 2, 2009
Why is Gathwrong still on this team?
LAcarl519 - May 2, 2009
He's doing his best to make the decision a no-brainer
carmen_fanzone - May 2, 2009
Because Lou can't pinch-run.
DGU - May 2, 2009
Another question: how long will he be on this team?
zevkalman - May 2, 2009
Gathwrong
NICE!!!
VegasCubFan - May 2, 2009
I said something like that
Back here in an overflow against the Cardinals last week.
Vermont Cubs Fan - May 2, 2009
and it was nice there too!

either.
Not Bruce Froemming - May 2, 2009

I'd rather have a dumb versatile player than a dumb pinch runner.
carmen_fanzone - May 2, 2009

about the 25th guy on the roster.
Not Bruce Froemming - May 2, 2009

So it’s a good day already.
Not Bruce Froemming - May 2, 2009
Fly out to RF, 1 down
carmen_fanzone - May 2, 2009
oh no Gathwrong is still in the game!
HoosierFan - May 2, 2009
he's decent enough in CF
Bill Potter - May 2, 2009
I've heard he's a good center fielder.
zevkalman - May 2, 2009
that's why he pinch ran
carmen_fanzone - May 2, 2009
But when
you are on the team primarily for your ability to run the bases and as a defensive sub, you need to stop getting picked off and oversliding bases when you get an opportunity to contribute. He hasn’t done anything for the team thus far. Hopefully, that will change.

Clutch16 - May 2, 2009

carmen_fanzone - May 2, 2009

Bill Potter - May 2, 2009
103 pitches for Lilly.
zevkalman - May 2, 2009
that curve was pitch #101
LAcarl519 - May 2, 2009

Bill Potter - May 2, 2009
WHere does the term golden sombrero come from?
Zeke - May 2, 2009
and what does it mean?
Emelie - May 2, 2009
IT MEANS FOR YOU
To get your flag ready to go up,,,,,,,
cubs north - May 2, 2009
yes, sir! :-D
Emelie - May 2, 2009
Since 3 strikeouts are a hat trick
people decided 4 K’s should get a bigger hat, like a sombrero.
Bill Potter - May 2, 2009
thanks
Emelie - May 2, 2009
no problem
5 strikeouts is a platinum sombrero, while 6 is a Horn (after Sam Horn).
Bill Potter - May 2, 2009
technically, 6 is a titanium sombrero
Horn did 5 in an extra-inning game
LAcarl519 - May 2, 2009
gotcha. thanks.
Bill Potter - May 2, 2009
Wikipedia is our friend
LAcarl519 - May 2, 2009
yes it is.
Bill Potter - May 2, 2009
If a batter gets to the point of getting 6, then it's on the manager for not pinch hitting.
Clearly a guy K-ing 5 times in one day is having a bad day at the plate…
Zeke - May 2, 2009
Andruw Jones did it a year or so ago, and Geoff Jenkins did it in a 17 inning game.
zevkalman - May 2, 2009
Andruw struck out 5 times in 9 innings and Jenkins 6 times in 17 innings.
zevkalman - May 2, 2009
Ugh. Just ugh.
Zeke - May 3, 2009
didn't Soriano have 4 or 5 Ks the day he hit the GW homer in Milwaukee?
LAcarl519 - May 2, 2009
and the golden part is what, exactly?
Zeke - May 2, 2009
I mean, why not a BROWN sombrero, considering...
…I’m just asking….
Zeke - May 2, 2009
beats me.
Maybe because striking out 4 times in a game should be shiny and stand out in the box score.
Bill Potter - May 2, 2009
you are actually celebrating the pitching accomplishment
not the batting futility, thus the metal goes up in value
LAcarl519 - May 2, 2009
well that makes sense, I suppose.
Bill Potter - May 2, 2009
OK. I'll buy that (kinda), but it could be four different pitchers...
…so it’s still more on the batter it seems…
Zeke - May 2, 2009
I think this stuff was thought up when pitchers were MEN and actually
throwing 10-12 complete games in a year was not unusual.
LAcarl519 - May 2, 2009
THe could do it because they didn't endlessly nibble around the plate and throw 100 pitches in 4 innings.
Jenkins, Koltman, Hands, – those guys usually finished what they started. 25 CGs a year was the norm.
Zeke - May 3, 2009
THE=They. Koltman= Holtzman. Geez. Early this am...
Zeke - May 3, 2009
Thank you, Mr. Ted ... a fine inning
Emelie - May 2, 2009

qccub - May 2, 2009
has he knocked over any catchers today?
VegasCubFan - May 2, 2009
Like this?
zevkalman - May 2, 2009
yeah, that'll do
VegasCubFan - May 2, 2009
104 pitches and due up in the bottom of the 8th
Will he stay in and finish the game?
goodstuff96 - May 2, 2009
I'd take him out
Put Heilman, maybe, in to finish.
Not Bruce Froemming - May 2, 2009
Plus
there are no off days coming up where he could get an extra day of rest. Might as well save some bullets for the next start.
Bill Potter - May 2, 2009
Right
That would be … Thursday in Houston, correct?
Not Bruce Froemming - May 2, 2009
I believe so.
Bill Potter - May 2, 2009
Well, he wasn't all that great last time in Houston
but his offense bailed him out. Hope for better things this time. Considering how he looked today, I’m optimistic.
Not Bruce Froemming - May 2, 2009
I'd let him at least start the inning....
carmen_fanzone - May 2, 2009
I'd send him out there
and have someone ready if he gets in trouble.
qccub - May 2, 2009
Nope
Z will pich hit for him.
