Bleed Cubbie Blue

The Marshall-Wainwright Rematch: Cubs vs. Cardinals, Thursday 5/21, 7:15 CT

Peavy? What Peavy? There's a game tonight! (But if you really want more Peavy, here's Barry Rozner's take. It seems likely that Peavy will make his scheduled start against the Cubs tomorrow night.

Now, back to the current series. The Cardinals have played 40 games and the Cubs 38 -- both fewer than one-quarter of their season. Yet, tonight's will be the ninth game between the two teams -- almost a quarter of the schedule.

That makes for rematches; these two pitchers hooked up on April 16 at Wrigley Field. Marshall pitched fairly well and left the game when it was tied -- the bullpen blew it. Both pitchers have faced tonight's opponent on another occasion this year, so they ought to be well familiar with the lineups.

I liked the word Lou Piniella used to describe what some Cardinals fans did as Lou walked back to the team hotel on Tuesday night:

Piniella said he was "razzled" by some Cardinals fans who recognized him, but fortunately there was no confrontation like the one he had with a loudmouth fan at Wrigley Field last weekend.

"Razzled". Lou's getting kind of Casey Stengel-ish with the English language.

Notes: Rick Ankiel won't be activated from the DL today.

I had nearly forgotten that Adam Wainwright used to be a reliever, but his record vs. the Cubs -- 17 appearances, only 8 starts -- reminds us that he spent a full year in the Cardinals' bullpen. His record vs. the Cubs is 2-3 with a 5.47 ERA, which has actually come down with the two decent starts he's had against them this year. Tonight might be a good time to rest Derrek Lee, who has hit only .211 (4-for-19) vs. Wainwright, who has walked 23 batters in 49 innings. It would be a really, really good idea to just wait him out -- unlike what the Cubs have done the last two nights.

Sean Marshall holds his own against virtually the entire Cardinal lineup, even Albert Pujols, who is 4-for-18 (all singles) against him. Only Brian Barden, who is 4-for-4, has hit him well. The Cardinals generally struggle vs. lefties and the Cubs have pitched well against St. Louis in this series. Keep up the good work, Sean; if he pitches well, Lou will have a tough decision to make regarding who to keep in the rotation (Marshall or Randy Wells) when Carlos Zambrano returns tomorrow.

There is national coverage again tonight, this time on the MLB Network, for those of you not in the St. Louis or Chicago areas, where it is on the local cable outlets. Usually, MLBN picks up one of the two teams' local coverage -- we'll see if they use Len & Bob. For today's other games see the MLB.com Mediacenter.

First

I have no life; I just wait by the computer for Al.

Same

just pray for a win in my spare time.

no life

that makes 2 of us with no lives. I wait by tv for game time.

Go Cubs!

Swept out of St. Louis? Hell No!

We need this one...bad!

after all, it is the stinkin’ Redbirds

Can the White Sox

withdraw their trade offer if Peavy gets injured tomorrow night? It would seem that Peavy should be required to give an answer to whether he will waive his NTC before he is able to take the mound tomorrow night.

I believe

that Peavy had 24 hours to waive the NTC.

I don't think there was a specific time deadline.
Sun Times...

is reporting that Peavy rejected the deal.

no play for Mr Gray?
Oh SNAP!

Brutal!

That is one DEAD penguin!

Isn't nature beautiful?
Yes.

Also, I hate tuxedos. So double yes.

I hope the Cubs trade for him.
Me too...let's discuss it!
would be the first time, right?
It must be...

because I’m really nervous and feel awkward and I’m sure it will be over in less than 2 minutes.

Gonna brag to your friends about it later?
They will be in awe of me.
we all are in awe already

that would make us in awesome of you

You know, I've often wondered by I can't get my locker open

But I guess Lorraine Peterson has the answer. Thanks Lorraine!

It's because you touch yourself at night
uhhhhh....

wat

lol

I thought that led to blindness in orphans, now I’m all confused.

So is SI
SI_JonHeyman Peavy deal to #chisox is dead says @ChrisDeLuca. chicago wasnt going to pay to induce him. jake talks to media in 30 mins 5 minutes ago from web

yay twitter.

I made a separate post for discussing this.

Go here.

But we should talk Peavy

In every single thread, Al! Otherwise, it just won’t be the BCB I know…

LOL

Throw in Brian Roberts, just for old time’s sake.

Just passing a long an update.

I’ll never do that again.

Don't let the cat out of the bag next time!

plus if we dont talk about him in every thread

how will Hendry know we want him?

Please win this game, Chicago Cubs.

Get a win tonight, take two of three from the Pads, and it’s a 3-3 road trip. Please.

Why is it

that the last hour or so before game time feels the longest?

same reason

i was never able to fall asleep on christmas eve

Your parents were too loud in their bedroom?
they had a bedroom?
I have no idea, but it drags on so much!

Today is particularly bad because Yahoo reverted to Pacific time for me, so I thought the game was at 5:15 all day…only to get home and have to wait 3 more hours…

Lou just told

Barry Larkin he should come play for our infield. lol on MLBN

Good day to be a White Sox fan! First they lose by 19 runs, then Peavy rejects the deal.

A la McDonald’s, “I’M LOVIN IT!”

Please, offense, score some damn runs. Oswalt’s going for the Astros, so hopefully he can shut down the Suds.

I found this amusing

in regards to the White Sox 20-1 loss to the Twins today

“Scott Podsednik, signed to give the White Sox better baserunning, has been picked off first base in three straight games”

what a shock, same lineup except for freel.

Soriano – LF
Theriot – SS
Fukudome – CF
Lee – 1B
Bradley – RF
Fontenot – 2B
Soto – C
Freel – 3B
Marshall – P

Freel is on our team?
And he plays third?

Huh.

Obviously saving Hoff for the hitter's paradise that is Petco
Nope

Fontenot back at 2nd tonight. Lou must not like the skills he exhibited at third base this series.

Freel better?

I've got to get a life...

S)oriano – S)huffle
T)heriot – T)he
F)ukudome – F)reakin
L)ee – L)ineup
B)radley – B)ecause
F)ontenot – F)astballs
S)oto – S)hould
F)reel – F)ly

clever

but keep your day job :P

yeah I think you're right..

unless Al wants to pay me for this.

I still have an expired CTA card on my BCB expense account...

…which is odd, since I live in Des Moines…

I'm gonna go ahead and predict a blow-up from Lou...

…if this game doesn’t go well in the early innings.

I thought that same thing today...

But then figured that he’s more likely to do it at home, don’t you think?

Can he throw 3rd base this time?
We need some life out of this so called offense today

It’s been a lousy enough week. Let’s get one back.

At least we're not the White Sox.

(1) 5 games under .500 in the worst division in baseball – CHECK

(2) Get rejected in a monster trade because the ace doesn’t wanna play for your craptastic team – CHECK

(3) Lose by 19 runs – CHECK

Maybe not

but we’ve been there. and it sucked.

I smell crustacean...
That last one could still come true

Hubris is not a proper sacrifice to the baseball gods.

Ain't that the truth
being a WhiteSux fan...

priceless!

There are some things that money can't buy (like Jake Peavy).

For everything else, there’s Minnesota.

welp all I can say is Go Cubs

I’m dreading tonight’s game…

Why?

Hope springs eternal.

eh, I hope

no pun intended (or is it?)

My spring of hope is feeling a bit dry today
That's too bad kiddo

Keep your (and our collective) chin up.

Tryin'.

But I got nuthin today.

Like this?

Even less

Just a “blah” day.

Been a blah week

But a win would help

Outside of the Cubs

i’ve had a pretty good week. Just had a crappy day.

Hope it ends well
I love this one

Classic.

I'm feeling rather sanguine about it
Ye of little faith.

shakes head sadly

he needs to get back on hope st.

Our beloved Phil Rogers said:

“Peavy will be in Boston by the trade deadline” on Chicago Tribune Live. Oh, sage of Michigan Avenue! Thank you for that priceless jewel!

That would be something.

Especially since he reportedly is only really looking at the midwest and National League.

How so?

He’s the Trib’s national baseball writer.

Atlanta has been rumored as another location
The two other writers on the show said so
And the last thing the BoSox need...

is another starter.

Thank you

for being able to read between the lines.

Phil Rogers is a bum. No disrespect to bums worldwide though.

MLBN should have their own crew tonight...they have for past Thursday games.

They use local telecasts on Saturdays.

EI on Comcrap has both feeds available, thank God.

MLBN is blacked out for me right now

Interesting development.

I have Boston-Toronto on MLBN-SD

MLBN-HD is blacked out and my Directv box tells me to go to hell on this channel.

So, is there an over/under yet on what inning Lou explodes tonight?

I’m thinking the sixth.

Is Marissa Miller going to be in the dugout again?

For her sake, I hope not.

And what is Demp doing to his leg in that picture?

Holding it all together
um...you mean Kerry Wood?
That's Wood

As in the pitcher, not the other Wood.

Or is that Wood?

Whoops. Maybe I should actually read what I type before posting.

That might be the only time

I have seen Lilly smile

Let's win this one, Cubs!

No game thread for me today… gotta head to work.. :(

Will tune into the gameday audio archive and the gamethread this evening — and I fully expect to bask in a Cubs win courtesy of our new Lazarus offense (in which any number of players return from the dead)…

See ya’ll another time and play nice now…

and chance Al

when you said

Peavy will make his scheduled start against the Cubs tomorrow night.

you meant to say

Peavy will make his scheduled start FOR the Cubs tomorrow night.

Chicago Cubs are On The Air!
Peavy?
Who?
Peavy.
What?

I’m a little deaf in that ear.

ahhhh

lets start this game already
