But I really get tired of people being overwhelmingly negative to the point that the feel in necessary to criticize and condemn those of us who wish to have a rosier view.
I posted a cautionary line last night….ah, here it is
An earlier post mentions the ‘weak’ Padres…they haven’t lost since they were chewed out by Bud Black In Chicago. Winning 6 in a row at Petco, sweeping the Reds and the Giants.
Beware…..since this is 1984 celebration weekend, it might get nasty.
I am attending one game and would not be caught near the Park Saturday, the ‘official’ day. (Thankfully, I work) I choose not to attend Sunday, I have another project to finish.
This isn’t a great weekend to be a Cubs fan in SD. But I do want to see Z against Peavy, even if it’s a loss. I’ve seen enough losses here, so what’s another…
by San Diego Smooth Jazz Man on May 22, 2009 7:07 PM EDT
The Pads have now won 7 in a row. Don’t say you weren’t warned.
I don’t get people here. The team or a player struggles and you just crap on them. I bet you’re the same idiot boo-birds that inhabit Wrigley. Jesus, what kind of fan ditches their team when things get tough?
And I’m a Cardinals fan. The last couple series last year were pretty slim on the crowd – but yes, generally, Busch is packed. I was getting tickets to the last series vs. the d-bags for a few bucks.
Oh, early season, or when in contention, it’s ridiculous around here. Later on, if the Cards are out of it, attendance does drop off. (not to Florida levels, but not sold out).
See, but still. The ballpark may not sell out, but the fans don’t start trashing players. I mean, this Kalil Greene thing has struck me as odd on many different levels, but typically you’ll see Cards fans want TLR to move a struggling player down in the line up, not trade him away.
Cub fans, especially casual ones, get very, very violent about things. It’s unbelievable.
I’ve heard some boos at Busch, but nothing like the ones at Wrigley. I think there’s just a certain group at Wrigley who I would classify as giant douchebags.
I lived in Chicago for a year – I couldn’t afford to compete with the suburban rich kids who bought tickets with mommy and daddy’s money to get wasted and be dicks on the red line. (not that I’m bitter)
And that’s one thing I like about the Lou. First Pitch tickets are an amazing deal, even if you only get SRO. Plus all the other ticket deals, for someone like me who just loves baseball, it means I spend too much time at Busch.
and it isn’t entirely their fault, is that normal fluctuations during a season are taken as a sign that it’s over for them. They’ve been burned a lot, so it’s easy to see.
Oh slam the managment all you want. But just slamming a slumping player and talking about how much your team sucks when they hit a rough stretch is ridiculous. Everyone is going to lose 50, and sometimes they’ll come like this.
hendry failed rather spectacularly, and if this season means his job, his successor has a tough job ahead. The big contracts on this team are set to get even bigger.
Hendry has spent like a drunken sailor. As GM, he and his staff are charged with making the right moves – be they trades, free agent acquisitions, player development & promotion, whatever – and they have simply screwed the pooch this year (as of now). I hope as much as anyone that it turns around.
There is no such thing as being completely buried in today's MLB
It seems like every other year, somebody comes from nowhere to make a run into the playoffs. Unfortunately, our Cubbies aren’t known for miracle finishes.
ARod came back and they catch fire. Even if he’s not hitting he changes the way you pitch lineups. Look at Texieras numbers after he came back. They are outstanding. We need Rammy back. If we can keep it close till then we’ll be ok.
Dislocated shoulder, I think a repeat of a past injury, he’s going to have a hard time carrying this team on his back unless the other guys contribute, which they may.
I’d like to say I’m full of schadenfreude for the Cubs, but I’m not. It sucks ass to watch your team play terribly, especially when you weren’t supposed to be bad. Plus half my friends are Cub fans.
I’ve been a Cub fan since the early 70’s and I never remember a streak like this. I mean, sure we lost games, etc., but this might be the most anemic I’ve ever seen the Cubs’ offense over a period of time.
but even the worst Cubs’ teams of the 70’s and 80’s could score runs. This is absolutely pathetic. I honestly don’t think they could hit AAA pitching right now.
on subpar pitching most of the season. billingsley and lowe, unfortunately, weren’t subpar. i don’t care what the numbers were during the regular season. the fact is, they got dominated in the playoffs. the “we went cold at the wrong time” works the first time it happens but after the second consecutive season, you begin to think that this cast perhaps isn’t up to the job. i don’t know. i hope they are, but i have eyes.
all I’m concerned about is going to the WS. They never have in my life, and after the terrible job JH did this off season, I have no reason to believe they’re going this year. I don’t care if they win 116 games, as Lou has already done once in his career.
not only are these teams rather clearly headed in different directions, but this year’s team has outperformed its pythag so far. So they’ve been lucky AND they’re getting worse.
If you're familiar with the concept, that's worse.
If you know what I’m referring to, then you know that I’m not saying that games are “played on paper”, or that the team’s performance in relation to its pythag is somehow predictive.
I thought you were just uninformed, but apparently you’re being disingenuous.
How can you possibly say that? First off, when Aram got hurt for the Pirates, it took a while for his power to return. Secondly, this is a reinjury, which can be trickier. Thirdly, he’s older now.
It’s ridiculous to say with any certainty how aramis is going to rebound. I’m not the one speculating.
D98: “I worry that a negative outcome could occur.”
NBF: “that likely won’t happen”
Example 1 is discussion. Example 2 is a prediction, and yours was coupled with your typical condescension. “oh, those stupid pessimist cub fans. How can they not see that ALL IS WELL?!”

Hacking?

Should have been a hit
Just unlucky

Bricks and Ivy - May 22, 2009
3 K's for Sori

I don’t care how hot he gets
Bricks and Ivy - May 22, 2009
Because he didn’t carry the team on his back during the stretch last year…
Mike Martin - May 22, 2009
OK
Who’s better that you reasonably can get?
And don’t tell me you won’t be the first guy cheering when he hits his next game-winning homer.
Not Bruce Froemming - May 22, 2009
I don't know anyone else
His lackadasical attitude makes my ass pucker. 0-2 count after 0-2 count drives me nuts.
Bricks and Ivy - May 22, 2009
and i will but not because its him, it will be because the cubs won
Bricks and Ivy - May 22, 2009
Bricks is right. It was a bad signing.
He’s way too inconsistent and a butcher in the field. Unfortunately, we’re going to be watching this for a few more years
Mapmaker - May 22, 2009
A career .280 hitter with almost 280 home runs is a terrible pick up… You’re right…
Mike Martin - May 22, 2009
Not the pick up but the amount of money. And thanks
Mapmaker - May 22, 2009
Sure he can carry a team.
He was the main reason we won the Central in 07 but times like this drive me insane. He’s either flaming hot or ice cold.
Bricks and Ivy - May 22, 2009
For 18m annually? Almost anyone.
sori is a dramatic cut below his salary peers.
D98 - May 22, 2009
Look on the bright side
That Pujols guy makes almost $14 mill.
rencelas - May 22, 2009
Aaaaaand now I'm pissed.
Stretch time, 3-0 Pads.
znohitter - May 22, 2009
I predict
a third Cubs hit tonight.
jaxinnabox - May 22, 2009
I gotta laugh
at all of you baseball “minds” that just last night said, “Oh, we at least will get to feast on the crappy Pads!”
HA!
Idiots!
You didn’t know they won 6 in a row? You think this Cubs team is so “talented”?
BULLSHIT!
In my opinion, they’ll be below .500 after next weekend when the Dodgers come to town.
Hope they can pull it together before A-Ram comes back, and they’re too buried to come back!

Not Bruce Froemming - May 22, 2009
Rosier than pessimism, anyhow. :)

Fine.
Don’t direct that at the other posters. Direct it at the players or management, where it belongs.

Mike Martin - May 22, 2009

rencelas - May 22, 2009
I live in St. Louis. Busch is packed no matter what.
Mike Martin - May 22, 2009
Me too
And I’m a Cardinals fan. The last couple series last year were pretty slim on the crowd – but yes, generally, Busch is packed. I was getting tickets to the last series vs. the d-bags for a few bucks.
rencelas - May 22, 2009
Cubs series sold out. Brewer series was close. Not sure what you’re talking about there.
I did the first pitch tickets to the Royals today. Boring game until the late innings. :)

Cub fans, especially casual ones, get very, very violent about things. It’s unbelievable.
I’ve heard some boos at Busch, but nothing like the ones at Wrigley. I think there’s just a certain group at Wrigley who I would classify as giant douchebags.
rencelas - May 22, 2009
Very few real Cubs fan go to Wrigley anymore.
It’s a sad story.
Mike Martin - May 22, 2009
Too damn expensive
I lived in Chicago for a year – I couldn’t afford to compete with the suburban rich kids who bought tickets with mommy and daddy’s money to get wasted and be dicks on the red line. (not that I’m bitter)
rencelas - May 22, 2009
And that’s one thing I like about the Lou. First Pitch tickets are an amazing deal, even if you only get SRO. Plus all the other ticket deals, for someone like me who just loves baseball, it means I spend too much time at Busch.
Mike Martin - May 22, 2009
Agree
When I work from home I grab the first pitch tickets a lot. $11 is crazy, and I’ve sat in the 100 level a couple times with them. Big thumbs up.
rencelas - May 22, 2009
It's 16 bucks in the upper reserved
Those are fine seats.
D98 - May 22, 2009
If you can't criticize stupid roster decisions....
Then what is the point of a team-based message board?
To publicly agree with the team’s insane and counterproductive decisions?
D98 - May 22, 2009

D98 - May 22, 2009
Sadly nothing will get done until the sale is done. And after that it’s anybody’s guess how the Cubs will spend.
Mike Martin - May 22, 2009
They need to get better in the player development department
I’m sick of seeing other teams in the Central bring up superstars (Braun, Pujols, etc.)
Mapmaker - May 22, 2009
We had pitchers lined up for days, but traded most away.
As far as the Cardinals go, they have so much talent in their farm system they’ll be competitive for years to come.
Mike Martin - May 22, 2009
Brewers too
But that comes from many years of high draft picks
Mapmaker - May 22, 2009
Pujols was a fluke
No doubt about that one. 13th round draft pick? Ridiculous.
Still, the Cubs have a crap farm system. One of the blogs rated them somewhere around 28th in MLB.
rencelas - May 22, 2009
Spending is irrelevant.
Hendry has spent like a drunken sailor. As GM, he and his staff are charged with making the right moves – be they trades, free agent acquisitions, player development & promotion, whatever – and they have simply screwed the pooch this year (as of now). I hope as much as anyone that it turns around.

They'll play better soon
Mapmaker - May 22, 2009
Remember 2007?
They were playing like crap. People were traded and fired. And things turned around.
D98 - May 22, 2009
Devil's Advocate here
The Cubs are still 21-18. The injury bug has owned them the past few weeks. If the guys come together and get healthy, they’re a very fearsome team.

the guys on the roster get paid too, they need to start earning it.

It’s almost June, our offense is in freefall….by th etime we get every body back we could be completely buried.
bluekoolaide - May 22, 2009

They’ll lose no ground tonight.

amory blaine - May 22, 2009
just a bullshit loss
to a bullshit team team led by an on-fire ’roider (manny)
brian custer - May 22, 2009
i think they were led
by their pitching staff. who dominated us. i don’t think it was a fluke. our hitters weren’t good enough to hit their pitchers. so we lost.
amory blaine - May 22, 2009
we lose that series
regardless of whether they have manny
amory blaine - May 22, 2009
Our hitters went cold at the worst possible time. Check the numbers and you’ll see they were pretty good.
Mike Martin - May 22, 2009
our hitters feasted
on subpar pitching most of the season. billingsley and lowe, unfortunately, weren’t subpar. i don’t care what the numbers were during the regular season. the fact is, they got dominated in the playoffs. the “we went cold at the wrong time” works the first time it happens but after the second consecutive season, you begin to think that this cast perhaps isn’t up to the job. i don’t know. i hope they are, but i have eyes.
amory blaine - May 22, 2009
You worry about making the playoffs first, THEN worry about a WS. If you make the second season anything can happen.
Mike Martin - May 22, 2009
we will get a wild card at least
take that to the bank
brian custer - May 22, 2009
Which bank?
I don’t trust them.
Mapmaker - May 22, 2009
Yeah, I think the bank analogies lost some fire over the past year or so…
Mike Martin - May 22, 2009
And I believe they'll win the division
but nothing tells me they can compete with other division winners.
mattvegas - May 22, 2009
The, ahem, Dodgers
Are really quite good.
rencelas - May 22, 2009
Yep even now
without the juicer.
mattvegas - May 22, 2009
It's just Manny being Manny.
rencelas - May 22, 2009
Considering it was a woman's drug
it’s Manny being womanny.
mattvegas - May 22, 2009
No, after being a fan for over 40 years
all I’m concerned about is going to the WS. They never have in my life, and after the terrible job JH did this off season, I have no reason to believe they’re going this year. I don’t care if they win 116 games, as Lou has already done once in his career.
mattvegas - May 22, 2009
If I ever become as jaded a Cubs fan as you, please don’t let me watch baseball anymore.
Mike Martin - May 22, 2009
+ 1,000
Not Bruce Froemming - May 22, 2009
That's totally empty.
not only are these teams rather clearly headed in different directions, but this year’s team has outperformed its pythag so far. So they’ve been lucky AND they’re getting worse.
D98 - May 22, 2009
Pythag?
mattvegas - May 22, 2009
Pythagorean record. Expected W/L
Based on run differential.
D98 - May 22, 2009
Didn't know
games were won and lost on paper.
Not Bruce Froemming - May 22, 2009
Sure.
The official scorer’s card. :P
znohitter - May 22, 2009
It's just witchcraft
Some math stuff, blah blah. ;)
rencelas - May 22, 2009
How do you think they sell
so many tickets in the offseason?
mattvegas - May 23, 2009
do you seriously not understand math?
I’m saying that, for all of the Cubs failures, their on field results have been moderately better than expected based on their production.
Your post is a complete non-sequitur.
D98 - May 23, 2009
Yeah, and the Diamondbacks
made it to the NL title series and allowed more runs than they scored.
I fully understand the concept, thanks. But numbers don’t always explain everything.
Not Bruce Froemming - May 23, 2009
If you're familiar with the concept, that's worse.
If you know what I’m referring to, then you know that I’m not saying that games are “played on paper”, or that the team’s performance in relation to its pythag is somehow predictive.
I thought you were just uninformed, but apparently you’re being disingenuous.
D98 - May 23, 2009
Then why
bring it up in the first place?
Not Bruce Froemming - May 23, 2009
Because the original post....
….posited that b/c our 2009 record is similar to our 2008 record on today’s date, that the team had performed better than its critics would believe.
D98 - May 23, 2009
Who is pitching?
Hilary Lee - May 22, 2009
Gregg
znohitter - May 22, 2009
it's cotts
to be good
brian custer - May 22, 2009
Gregg
Reddevil - May 22, 2009
i'm a little tired of soriano
amory blaine - May 22, 2009
i know
he hits homeruns in bunches and it’s helpful when he does that, but his is a bad bad contract. there’s something about him that i just don’t like.
amory blaine - May 22, 2009
Gwynn "not as solidly built as his father"
Errrr, yeah, he’s not like 300 pounds.
rencelas - May 22, 2009
Alright.
Last chance: Need 4 to take the game to the bottom half of the inning.
znohitter - May 22, 2009
clap clap clapclapclap
CubFanInCanberra (9387milesfromWrigley) - May 22, 2009
Miles goes 0-4.
uhhhh
Cubbiegoon - May 22, 2009
He may be Hendry's worst signing ever.
It’s the equivalent of giving Jose Macias $5M.
D98 - May 22, 2009
I’m tellin’ you. Be patient.
Mike Martin - May 23, 2009
Patient for Aaron Miles?
I don’t think we have a choice…. He’s ours until the end of next season with that godawful contract.
D98 - May 23, 2009
No it isn't
And you know that. Cut the hyperbole.
Not Bruce Froemming - May 23, 2009
Okay, smart guy, what's your pick?
Even Eyre and Howry gave some production. Even LaTroy did. So did Jacque.
Miles is completely useless, especially when we discovered he couldn’t make the throw from 3b. He represents a total waste of $5m and a roster spot.
D98 - May 23, 2009
Miles K.
One down. 15 K for the SD pitching.
znohitter - May 22, 2009
no fair

CubFanInCanberra (9387milesfromWrigley) - May 22, 2009

Yikes. Yeah, Peavy is freakin’ good, but wow.

znohitter - May 22, 2009
Damn. Milton K's.
EARN IT SORI!
znohitter - May 22, 2009
I think you should stop posting that.
You’re going to jinx these guys.
rencelas - May 22, 2009
I think you're right.
znohitter - May 22, 2009

Soriano avoids the Golden Sombrero.

Still haven’t come down from seeing the miricle shot from Lebron—unbelievable—I came on to see an unbelievable comeback right?
cubswinnow - May 22, 2009
that's the plan
CubFanInCanberra (9387milesfromWrigley) - May 22, 2009

cubswinnow - May 22, 2009

CubFanInCanberra (9387milesfromWrigley) - May 22, 2009

amory blaine - May 22, 2009

znohitter - May 22, 2009

cubswinnow - May 22, 2009

amory blaine - May 22, 2009
LOADED FOR LEE!
znohitter - May 22, 2009
Do it Lee.
I hate the Padres.
rencelas - May 22, 2009
He ALWAYS takes the pitch with a 3-1 count. Scares me.
Mike Martin - May 22, 2009
he's got a pretty damned good eye!
CubFanInCanberra (9387milesfromWrigley) - May 22, 2009
there it is!
cubswinnow - May 22, 2009
based clogged!!
CubFanInCanberra (9387milesfromWrigley) - May 22, 2009

cubswinnow - May 22, 2009
0-2 on Lee.
COME ON!
znohitter - May 22, 2009
oh well...
did you ruin a hat for nothing?
CubFanInCanberra (9387milesfromWrigley) - May 22, 2009
No, I don't think I could ruin this one if I tried.
Short of just going at it with a knife or something.
znohitter - May 22, 2009
Poop.
rencelas - May 22, 2009
lee fouls out\
Cubbiegoon - May 22, 2009

Well.... Lee used to be so good.
D98 - May 22, 2009

cubswinnow - May 22, 2009

Cub Power
mattvegas - May 22, 2009
darkest before the dawn
there were some positives 2night. peavy the psycho was prolly a liitle over-motivated
brian custer - May 23, 2009
Positives... Not with that offense.
15k, and what, 4 singles, no runs?
D98 - May 23, 2009
Hopefully Lee gets things together soon. I’m starting to wonder if his off-field issues could be causing some of this?
Mike Martin - May 22, 2009
What issues are you referring to?
D98 - May 23, 2009
His daughter, mainly.
Mike Martin - May 23, 2009
She's fine - doesn't have the eye condition.
Try and keep up. :)
D98 - May 23, 2009
G'night all
I’m gonna escape before anyone gets burned in effigy..
CubFanInCanberra (9387milesfromWrigley) - May 22, 2009

CubFanInCanberra (9387milesfromWrigley) - May 23, 2009

it is 1AM satuday where i am (EDST)
brian custer - May 23, 2009
later everyone. .maybe we will score a run (or 12) tomorrow.
cubswinnow - May 23, 2009
This team's got major issues.
Lee is a below average hitter now, and all he provides is defense.
I’d forget about getting Peavy. We need some f***** hitting.
Milton's Gameboard - May 23, 2009
We have the hitting
They just need to start doing it.
Mike Martin - May 23, 2009
They have some hitting.
Lee is never going to be above be again, and 2008 mike Fontenot isn’t walking through that door….
D98 - May 23, 2009
Weird
Missing words. Lee is done being above average, and I worry that Aramis’ injury could send him into a similar multi-year tailspin.
D98 - May 23, 2009
Oh, forget it
Now we’re worried about something that likely won’t happen..
I swear, Cubs fans sometimes deserve all the criticism they get.
Not Bruce Froemming - May 23, 2009
"likely won't" is big talk.
D98 - May 23, 2009
You certainly are
“I worry that Aramis’ injury could send him into a similar multi-year tailspin.”
IIRC, the last time this happened was nine years ago.
Not Bruce Froemming - May 23, 2009
I'll go slowly for you.
D98 - May 23, 2009
Who said 'all is well'?
Things are not well right now. But it’s no use putting a negative spin on future things that aren’t likely to turn out that way.
You, sir, are an idiot.
Not Bruce Froemming - May 23, 2009
Well, that was disappointing.
I think I’m off towards bed, folks. Have a good night!
znohitter - May 23, 2009
13 left on base.
That will do it right there.
Mike Martin - May 23, 2009
that is a
killer
brian custer - May 23, 2009
Yep
Actually, it’s amazing they had that many baserunners, considering how few hits they had.
Not Bruce Froemming - May 23, 2009
Derrek Lee looks to me like he's hurt, and if so...
… I hope he gets better. Lee’s a great guy and I wish him nothing but success.
DrCrawdad - May 23, 2009
If he's been hurt for two years....
….and the official line is that this neck injury dates back to 2007, then what we see is now what were going to get.
