Well, if I knew the answer to that question, I'd be in the dugout, not writing this blog. Yahoo's Jeff Passan trots out the tired old saw -- Lou needs to blow up:
Little irks Piniella more than prolonged misery, his last epic explosion coming June 2, 2007, during a six-game losing streak. He kicked dirt, then kicked his hat and, for good measure, kicked an umpire. Then he watched the Cubs boot their losing attitude and finish on a 63-46 binge. This much can be said of Piniella: He does nothing halfway.
That "epic explosion" came fairly early in Lou's first year as manager, before he knew the team well, and one day after a blowup in the Cubs dugout between teammates Carlos Zambrano and Michael Barrett. It was calculated. Doing the same thing right now would be... pointless. This team doesn't need a blowup, it just needs more timely hitting, better bullpen work, and recovery from all the injuries. And, as Passan writes later in his article:
The Cubs don’t know who or what they are. Playing for Piniella puts a certain fear into players – "You know what Lou expects," [Mark] DeRosa said – and motivates them accordingly. And yet that self-assuredness that no manager alone can imbue in a group, the swagger that the Cubs embodied last regular season, is missing.
"I’m not sure what the identity of this team is," [Ted] Lilly said. "I think we’re still trying to find it. It takes some time. It’s not June yet."
It's hard to find a team identity when players are on a revolving door through the DL. But Lilly is right in implying that it's still very early and there's time to find that identity, and win with it. However, losing 8 in a row puts the Cubs on a very short list if they intend to repeat a postseason appearance. Very few teams have managed that many losses in a row and still made the postseason. Last year's Dodgers are one of them; they lost 8 in a row even after they got Manny Ramirez and at the end of that streak were five games under .500 at 65-70, 4.5 games out of first place -- just half a game better off than the Cubs are now, except there were 27 games left for them, not 119. The Dodgers suddenly turned it on, went 19-8 the rest of the year (best in baseball over that span) and won the NL West.
The 2006 Cardinals had two eight-game losing streaks and another of seven -- and that last streak came late in September and they almost blew a seven-game lead with 12 to play -- but they squeaked into the postseason and went 11-5 when it counted and won it all.
Then there's my favorite example, the 2000 Yankees, who had a nine-game lead in the AL East with 19 to go and proceeded to lose 15 of their final 18 (one game was cancelled) and the last seven regular season games in a row, and not in close games, either; among the 15 losses were scores of 11-1 (twice), 15-4 (twice), 16-3, 11-3 and 13-2. But they squeaked out a division title because the Red Sox couldn't win when it counted, and won the World Series.
There are also plenty of examples of recent teams that have struggled in May, only to turn it on and make postseasons. But the Cubs had better start tonight.

|
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Ian Snell has made 11 appearances (9 starts) lifetime vs. the Cubs and is 1-5 with a 5.93 ERA, similar to his numbers this season. He's walked a lot of people this year and Alfonso Soriano usually pounds him -- 9-for-18 with three homers. I liked Sori's leadoff AB yesterday where he took a 12-pitch walk, but I'd settle for a first-pitch leadoff HR today.
Even though the Pirates are a divisional rival, Sean Marshall has not faced them since 2006 (probably because of his shuttling back and forth to Iowa and the bizarre scheduling of 2008 when the Cubs played the Pirates 12 times by the end of May and hardly at all after), when he made three starts against them, getting a win and a no-decision. Only two current Pirates -- Nate McLouth (2-for-8, a HR) and Jack Wilson (3-for-9) have more than three AB vs. Sean.
The Cubs are on cable only today (CSN in Chicago and FSN in Pittsburgh). Perhaps you are happy about that if you live outside these areas. For today's other games see the MLB.com Mediacenter.

Eventually you flip a coin, and
It comes up heads… Here’s hoping for hitting AND pitching tonight, for a change.
DisCUBbobulated - May 26, 2009
I don't know.
I can see the Cubs making an appearance in an updated Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead.
DGU - May 26, 2009

How to break a losing streak
Have Marshall pitch like he has been, only give him as many runs as we scored last night.
chitownhawkeye - May 26, 2009
Greetings from Shanghai
Here on vacation. The streak isn’t my fault; I left for Asia on Thursday, after the Cubs had already lost 3…
The 1989 Cubs also lost about 7 or 8 in a row early on. If they can stop the bleeding, there is still time, but it does need to start soon. And the Cardinals need to start helping instead of laying down for Milwaukee.
Shanghai Badger - May 26, 2009
is it raining
at Wrigley?
drewishdrewid - May 26, 2009
Light drizzle
Sky looks dark to west, but they are going to play tonight.

JFCubFan - May 26, 2009
Please win tonight
I have a feeling the NBA playoffs are going to let me down tonight so I could use a Cubs win.
nji232 - May 26, 2009

calicubfan - May 26, 2009

No half-measures from this quarter
This losing streak ends tonight. Ursus Collosi, The Mighty Cubs, will smite these young Pirates tonight, and in so doing, will deliver unto our generation the most thrilling tale of dominance ever told!
Clutch16 - May 26, 2009

sue369 - May 27, 2009
Just win tonight.
sue369 - May 26, 2009
Exactly
I really hope the game doesn’t get rained out. I wanna get this streak over with, not have to sit with it for another day (I am sure the players are more anxious to get it over with than us)!
SotoRiot - May 26, 2009
I agree about
the players. This has to be driving them crazy.
sue369 - May 26, 2009

But Lou isn’t making much sense lately.
nji232 - May 26, 2009
back to last night
me and your mom AWESOME!!!!!!
honeymunchkin666 - May 26, 2009
There is only one person in the world can figure out how to cure this team's woes.
zevkalman - May 26, 2009
The second edition is better.
santoswoodenlegs - May 26, 2009
Yeah, Joe Morgan obviously has learned a lot since the first edition came out.
zevkalman - May 26, 2009
wait...
Is that a real book? (I have a feeling I’m opening myself to get laughed at by asking…but I cannot fathom that anyone would actually have printed that…)
CubsWin!Oregon - May 26, 2009
The first one is so very real.
santoswoodenlegs - May 26, 2009
Wow.
I know what I’m buying all my friends for their birthdays. That’s outstanding.
CubsWin!Oregon - May 26, 2009
Hey if we get rained out tonight....
Then at least we didnt lose!
Rudey - May 26, 2009
Scattered showers
I think we will be fine. Looks clear in patches up north
louslovechild - May 26, 2009
Dont get me wrong
id MUUUUUUUUUUch rather get the win
Rudey - May 26, 2009
Sitting one more day and thinking about not winning, without being able to do anything would be torturous.
louslovechild - May 26, 2009
Anyone see the NL All Star voting so far?
Brewers have 1st or 2nd at almost every position. Not surprising, JJ Hardy 1st in NL SS????
louslovechild - May 26, 2009
Brewers fans popping up everywhere!!
Rudey - May 26, 2009
But JJ Hardy?
Hanley Ramirez is a name that comes to mind that could be a little more deserving and a lot more popular. Or at least I thought.
louslovechild - May 26, 2009
But...
Hanley Ramirez plays for a team that has about 74 or so fans.
kanderber - May 26, 2009
They obviously are organizing
Good for them, if we have to I would say vote for a Brewer over a Cardinal.
nji232 - May 26, 2009
Actually...
I like the idea of not giving their best players any rest. As far as I’m concerned I’d rather not have any Cubs make it to the ASG, and then be fresher come the second half.
CubsWin!Oregon - May 26, 2009
Just another example of how terribly put together...
everything surrounding the All Star game is.
You know, it’s really pretty pathetic of how bad a job MLB does at this. The MLB All Star Game is a collection of the world’s best baseball players. And most fans think it’s a joke, from the voting, to the “this time it counts” thing, etc.
kanderber - May 26, 2009
That's because it is a joke
Exhibit A, voting with less than a third of the season.
Exhibit B, having it at the halfway point.
Exhibit C, letting the fans vote so it’s a popularity contest.
I just don’t have any respect for it.
chitownhawkeye - May 26, 2009
Lou had his chance to blow up twice
Once with Ted Lilly and second with the Freel play at 3rd.
I think Lou is a little more concerned that if they lose again tonight people are going to start talking about letting him go. All speculative of course but let’s face it, that type of discussion goes on if you hit a losing streak like this….unfortunately.
ak123 - May 26, 2009
Promise we win today.
I was 11-2 when I assumed victory last year .. Let’s make it undefeated this year.
Unique - May 26, 2009
1-0!
Unique - May 27, 2009
come on, its Snell....I mean its Snell!!
GO CUBS!
Chanman25 - May 26, 2009
Lou talking to Ron about clutch hitting
“You know… last night we had the winning run at the plate in the 9th and didn’t get it done”. Seems like even the 8 runs scored last night were not nearly as important as timely hitting in close games and clutch situations. However, how do you get people to be more clutch – seems like they either have it or they don’t, but it’s not something you can just force people to do…
DisCUBbobulated - May 26, 2009
Did Ron ask Lou why he didn't PH for Aaron Miles instead of complaining now?
zevkalman - May 26, 2009
That is the question
nobody has the balls to ask Lou.
nji232 - May 26, 2009
I really don't get
Lou’s attitude over this losing streak. I don’t want to see him go crazy but at least act concerned.
sue369 - May 26, 2009
Meanwhile...
santoswoodenlegs - May 26, 2009
erm...erm...
well, interesting..
Chanman25 - May 26, 2009
Every time I see a quote from him
I become more convinced that he just doesn’t care. He saw he was given crap and once Aramis went down he just didn’t care anymore.
nji232 - May 26, 2009
Do you think he wants out?
sue369 - May 26, 2009
if yes,
can we replace him with Bob?
xene - May 26, 2009
Think Bob would
take the job?
sue369 - May 26, 2009
who knows, but the man knows his baseball
xene - May 26, 2009
I agree
I like Bob
sue369 - May 26, 2009
Not necessarily
I don’t know what he’s doing anymore, its just obvious to me that this isn’t the same Lou from the past two seasons.
nji232 - May 26, 2009
I honestly think that last night was a statement made by Lou
No. Not that senility is creeping, but to Hendry. He used the team he has been given. Cotts, Patton, Ascanio, like it or not are major league pitchers that Hendry felt were the best we could find. Miles is a Hendry pick. Lou is showing the boss who has it and who doesnt. We have too much talent and too many games left in Lou’s eyes, so I think he dumped the game into the players laps last night. “Here, win it if you can.” sort of thing. They couldnt and he is going to keep putting people out there until 9 guys perform each night, and then those 9 will play the rest of the way. I personally think 1 or 2 of them arent on this roster yet.
louslovechild - May 26, 2009
If that's the case
and I’m not completely disagreeing, then it’s not the first game he’s done that way.
chitownhawkeye - May 26, 2009
I recced this comment..
I think you’re sniffing around the right tree here. I look at the team and sense unsettled chemistry. I am sensing that he wants a team that can win close games in October, and this ain’t it. No one in Chicago will be pleased with another first round playoff exit, despite how many games we win before that. Rightly so, Lou’s focus should be winning October games.
