Looking at weather radars late yesterday afternoon, I wouldn't have given real good odds that the game would have been played at all -- the Chicago area seemed surrounded by thunderstorms and more were heading north from downstate.
But the area got just enough of a break from the weather -- it was mostly dry from about 5:00 until a downpour hit just before 9:00 -- for the Cubs and Pirates to get an official five innings in before the umpires finally called everyone off the field with a 1-2 count on ex-Cub Craig Monroe in the top of the sixth. Result: a 6-1 rain-shortened Cubs win over the Pirates, the second game of the year that went into the books with fewer than nine innings played, and the eight-game losing streak is history. The Cubs returned to the .500 mark and with the Cardinals' 8-1 win over the Brewers, crept back to four games out of first place (three in the loss column).
With only five innings played, both Sean Marshall and Ian Snell, the game's starting pitchers, get credit for complete games; Marshall threw perhaps his best game of the year, allowing only four hits (all singles), striking out six, and making two slick defensive plays -- catching a line drive and also snagging a sharply hit grounder up the middle for an easy 1-3 putout.
Meanwhile, the Cubs offense continued its awakening from the dismal road trip; Kosuke Fukudome hit his first home run in a month. Micah Hoffpauir drove in a pair of runs with a double, and Marshall, who has turned himself into a pretty good hitter (3-for-12 this year with two RBI), singled in a run. The club also resumed its patient ways, walking four times in only five innings of batting.
How baseball has changed: I remember a game day around this time of year in 1978, when a game was called at 10 am because of the mere threat of rain. Of course, that was in the days where the average attendance was about 18,000 and the average ticket price was about $5 (yes, seriously, $5 -- even box seats weren't that pricey), so the team's financial exposure wasn't that high for a postponement. Today, with the price of an average ticket approaching $50 and virtually every game a sellout, a rainout could cost the Cubs somewhere in the range of $1.5 million to $1.8 million -- or, to put it in another way, about the cost of Aaron Heilman's salary for 2009. In addition, there are other pressures, such as tight schedules with no scheduled doubleheaders (and no, I'm not arguing in favor of that -- there's no way the owners are giving up the revenue to give two games for the price of one, not to mention the fact that you can't get a regular DH finished in less than seven hours these days) and the rule requiring a day off at least every 20 days.
That's why we see games like last night's, played in part in very difficult conditions -- the last inning was played in a pretty hard downpour and you could just imagine fielders saying to themselves, "Please don't hit me a popup!" -- pushed to at least be official games. A little more than half of the listed paid crowd, 38,303, actually showed up to brave the rain and almost all of us, myself included, ducked out when the delay was called just before 9:00. After an hour and six minutes, the result was made official at 10:05. Strangely enough, at the 7:05 scheduled game time, it was not raining -- though it had much of the time when batting practice normally would have been held -- the field was uncovered, and pitchers had warmed up, but no one, not even the umpires, had appeared. Finally, about 7:10 the umpires came out of the dugout -- one of the few times you'll ever see umpires applauded -- and the first pitch was thrown at 7:12.
The Cubs will take them, these days, any way they can. The offense seems to have awakened and if the pitching can settle back into the groove it had even during the road trip portion of the losing streak, things can turn around quickly. The two teams will try again this afternoon, weather permitting:
Today: Today: Showers likely, with thunderstorms also possible after 1pm. Patchy fog before 1pm. Otherwise, cloudy, with a high near 69. North northwest wind between 5 and 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
Notes: sources tell me, despite me and some others wanting the Cubs to go after Mark DeRosa, the Cubs will not seek his return, nor are they at this time looking for help outside the organization; and, further, there are no immediate plans to call up Jake Fox. If the team keeps hitting the way they have the last two games, a turnaround could come as quickly as the losing streak did.

Thinking of building............
……….an ark. When will the rain subside?
This is crazy, but we can’t claim to have had “no spring” in 2009.
tville - May 27, 2009
conditions last night
When I saw Theriot slip on home plate while running to first, that gets me thinking about another injury. This one, weather-related.
thermal54 - May 27, 2009
Sean Marshall
Kudos to Sean – good pitching, good defense, and good hitting; he has turned himself into an all-around good player. He got a hit, but his other AB impressed me, too – the 10 or 11 pitch AB where he fouled out several pitches to go from 0-2 to 3-2. Whatever the Cubs do in the short-term, Sean has proven that he deserves to be in the Cubs’ rotation long-term. It would be a waste of a complete player to stuff him in the ’pen.
Short-term the Cubs may need to do that, to limit his innings and to carry the team through to when a LH reliever can be acquired. But I can’t see how anyone could still make the case that Marshall belongs in the bullpen.
DGU - May 27, 2009
I watched Marshall's
ten pitch at-bat on Gameday and was very impressed, especially when the two batters before him had one pitch at bats (I think).
I also agree that it would be a waste to put Marshall in the bullpen. He has proven, to me, this season that he belongs but then against I suppose it is a good problem to have when you can’t decide where to put all the starting pitching that is major league ready.
gwood - May 27, 2009
I agree
Marshall deserves to stay in the rotation, and why weaken your starting pitching just to strengthen the pen? The Cub’s should focus on getting a lefty elsewhere, if that is possible.
Side note, I love watching Hoffpauir hit, seems like he always hits the ball hard somewhere.
slocs55 - May 27, 2009
Unfortunately
it may not be possible to get a lefty elsewhere. It’s not as if they are all that common and teams tend to hold onto the good ones. IF the White Sox ever did get out of it, Thornton would be great on the North Side.
jerry morales rules - May 27, 2009
They are tough to come by,
but eventually teams will fade, they will want to dump salaries and someone will become available.
Or a team will stupidly let go of a Scott Eyre type.
slocs55 - May 27, 2009
Don't worry, they will. Along with the same crowd that is making the case that DLee can't hit.
willie mays hayes' gloves - May 27, 2009
Not for nothing
But I can’t imagine it’s the easiest thing to do — bullpen to rotation to bullpen to rotation.
He’d be better served planting him somewhere. I vote the rotation.
Zambrano, Lilly, Dempster, Harden/Wells and Marshall is just fine.
Worf - May 27, 2009
I agree
Wells needs to be our sixth starter. He should go back to AAA to remain stretched out if another starter gets injured.
gwood - May 27, 2009
Tell you what
How bout we consider moving Marshall to the pen when your beloved Harden pitches say THREE EFFECTIVE games in a row. Right now he is both injured and has stats no better than Dempster .
Doggie Stalker - May 27, 2009
Oops
wrong thread. That was meant as a response to Blou’s obsession with sticking Marshall in the pen while believing Harden is God’s gift to baseball.
Doggie Stalker - May 27, 2009
Nice to get a win!
GO CUBS!
malicedoom - May 27, 2009
I have this odd feeling this morning
I forgot how it felt after a Cubs win. That was how the Cubs should play the Pirates and Ian Snell. walks, timely hitting, Sean Marshall doing his Big Z impersenation, and of course winning.
nji232 - May 27, 2009
Big Z impersonation?
The at-bat lasted 11 pitches. Z can go three at-bats without seeing 11 pitches
Worf - May 27, 2009
I think Big Z is probably the fifth best hitter we have right now
Soriano, Dome, Theriot, Lee, Big Z- If I needed a pinch hit right now, that is the order I pick em.
nji232 - May 27, 2009
you would lose a lot of ballgames
heine41 - May 27, 2009

Just matching the Z hate with some Z love.

DeRo
Still thinking his aquisition (barring there aren’t better cost/talent options available and there’s already a bullpen move being made) would be a great lift for the team if mgmt is considering a move at the end of next month.
I know its been noted on ad nauseam, but we would be adding a great clubhouse guy, versatile fielder, solid bench man and I think would be just a feel good PR opportunity that would generate an emotional lift for the club and fans as they move into the second half of the season
The Ryno and I Know - May 27, 2009
DeRo would up the play at 3B, but would he be a psychological lift?
I’m not sure about that. Wouldn’t you basically be putting Fontenot and Miles on notice until Rami got back? Would management be sending a signal that said, “We have no confidence in how we designed this team?”
Anyway, Al’s source repeats what we heard elsewhere – that the Cubs aren’t considering this. I think it’s time to put this trade idea to bed – at least for a while.
DGU - May 27, 2009
While I'd still like to see DeRo in a Cubs uniform again...
… all it really will take to improve things is for players like Bradley, Soto, Fontenot and Lee to hit the way they are capable of hitting.
Incidentally, and I have no source on this, just speculating, it would not surprise me to see Tampa Bay inquire about DeRosa, given that they have lost their regular 2B (Iwamura) for the season.
Al Yellon - May 27, 2009
Can we all chip in a $1 to have them
take Freel?
N Oakley - May 27, 2009
Amen brother
Ryan Freel is horrendous. I don’t think it will be very long before Lou Piniella walks up to Hendry and tells him to get rid of this clown.
BLou - May 27, 2009
+1 trillion
nji232 - May 27, 2009
I must admit that his contributions to the cause have been few and far between.
willie mays hayes' gloves - May 27, 2009
You get the feeling
They’re trying to pull an Edmonds and give him a chance to get his bearings. Wish it would work, but I’m not holding my breath.
NWIowaCubFan - May 27, 2009
We have an abundance of 2B
Can’t we offer one to the Rays? Can’t imagine Hendry would ask for much. Maybe a bucket of baseballs for Miles?
gwood - May 27, 2009
With Ramirez out, it pains me to type this,
but the team may need Miles. Assuming Fontenot is the starting 2B and fill in at 3B, my confidence on the remainder in order is Miles, Scales then Freel.
I would like to see Scales get two or three starts in a row to see if he’s still an option. If the magic has worn off and he’s played out, 2nd is now a thin position with Miles and Freel as the alternatives.
N Oakley - May 27, 2009
Now obviously I have a potentially irrational hatred of Miles
but I would rather watch Bobby Scales play every day.
nji232 - May 27, 2009
If no moves are made
Then Fontenot should remain as primary 3B and Scales/Miles handle 2B.
That’s unless we get all wacky and move Soriano to 2B in order to make room for Fox in LF. In which case Scales goes to the bench and Miles just… goes.
Worf - May 27, 2009
Just guessing if the world turns over
and Soriano is butchering second, Hoffpauir would be in LF.
N Oakley - May 27, 2009
I thought I'd read that Fox has played some LF
And Hoff/Bradley would remain at RF in my world.
Six of one; half-dozen of the other, I guess.
I’ll tell you this, though. A defense of Fox and Hoff in the outfield and Sori and Fontenot in the infield would get a lot of people on here rethinking the DH.
Worf - May 27, 2009
I for one won't contemplate the DH, but will
continue to mumble about the team Hendry/Lou have put together.
N Oakley - May 27, 2009
A defense of Fox and Hoff in the outfield and Sori and Fontenot in the infield would get a lot of people on here rethinking the DH.
Not at all. Rather, it gets me thinking that we need to trade some of these DH players for people who play REAL baseball.
drewishdrewid - May 27, 2009
agreed
hopefully that is why Fox is getting the call up. If we can get him enough at-bats, and he tears it up like he was in AAA, an AL team (or the Mets) will have to come calling.
gwood - May 27, 2009
I am hearing a lot of chatter
in STL about Dero….that would be interesting to say the least. Sounds like there is a 50% chance that Glaus is not going to be available the whole year.
TheRiot Police - May 27, 2009
I heard the same rumor.
Al Yellon - May 27, 2009
OK, that bothers me a lot
It’s just the type of thing the Cards would do on their way to the playoffs in years past.
Hold me. I’m scared.
Worf - May 27, 2009
I would hate to see that.
slocs55 - May 27, 2009
All true.
Futher, this team was built to allow for an offensive vacuum in center field with a Dome/Johnson tandem. If they can continue to produce and the other players with “established bat” contracts produce, any stopgap player should be survivable regardless of offense.
From the looks of things, bats are coming around with Bradley, Lee, Hoffpauir, & Soto all have their averages and OBP rising over the last 10-15 games. Time to shuffle the deck and solidify the pen, end the Freel experiment (2 hits over 16 AB, with 1 bat flipping walk?) and move forward.
Nice to see the W, was forgetting what it looked like.
N Oakley - May 27, 2009
I've been leaning against bringing DeRosa back
because of the cost.
But today’s S-T says Ramirez isn’t even close. And I don’t think he’ll be at full strength until NEXT year.
I think whoever we get at 3B, if it’s not in-house, could be there for the duration.
Worf - May 27, 2009
Aramis is a huge question mark
I wouldn’t be shocked if we dont see him until mid-August
nji232 - May 27, 2009
I'm really surprised that Al's source says the club isn't even looking for outside help.
Maybe they looked and saw no good prices; that would be one interpretation.
DGU - May 27, 2009
I think that's a correct interpretation...
… at this time. That could change, of course, depending on how A-Ram progresses. Kouzmanoff might be a reasonable (and fairly inexpensive in dollars and players) option.
Al Yellon - May 27, 2009
I didn't think Kouz Kouz would be much of an upgrade?
Or is this a guy who might benefit from a change of scenery?
I know his numbers away from PETCO are much better, but do we think this guy will be of benefit?
heine41 - May 27, 2009
Check Kouz' splits
He’s both better away than at home and better in the second half than the first. If he was cheap, I’d be glad to have him.
DGU - May 27, 2009
Yeah, I think I would, too.
Al Yellon - May 27, 2009
awesome
thanks for the link
heine41 - May 27, 2009
Ugh
I can understand if the current prices are too high right now, but there is no way they can plug the hole at 3B with Ryan Freel.
I get the impression that thinking Ramirez will both be back AND good by the break is nothing more than wish casting on the parts of Cubs fans. I have had serious doubts that he will be the same player when he returns, at least not until August, if not longer.
If they are serious about contending this season, they absolutely have to plug the hole at 3B, and there aren’t any options in house unless they plan on living with Jake Fox carrying a frying pan at the corner.
I think DeRosa would be a help, but he’s not the only option out there.
I am in huge favor of DGU’s Huff idea. Throw four or five guys at them and try to get Huff and Sherill, and call that the big purchase of the season. Sherill bumps Cotts out of the pen, and makes the back end a lot stronger. And Huff mans 3B, and when Ramirez gets back to form, Huff can spell/backup all four corners, which are spots that are currently manned by guys whom we can expect to miss some time.
WittyUserName - May 27, 2009
If Huff can be had, it better be cheap.
Last 10 games average is .210 with a .660 ops. Not sure that’s any better than Fontenot or Freel.
Sherill would make that a worthwhile deal though.
N Oakley - May 27, 2009
Fontenot, sure - and it could help. Miles, who cares?
It’s pretty clear that Aaron Miles’ “future” with the Cubs ends, at the latest, with the final pitch of the 2010 season.
As for Fontenot, sure, I think that it could send a message, and it’s one that may need sending. Obviously I agree that it’s not going to happen – I think that most of us have known that was the case all along. Management is not going to admit a mistake like that.
D98 - May 27, 2009
Whether it's true or not is not at issue right now.
One way or another Fontenot will be getting a lot of playing time. It’s better to show confidence in him in the time being.
DGU - May 27, 2009
Relieved......
to say the least.
mrcubsfan - May 27, 2009
My bet that Bobby Scales will not get 5 more hits is looking good
That said, I endorse the following move to the pitching staff.
1. Whack Cotts
2. Dump Patton
3. Move Marshall to the pen
4. Call up Stevens
Marshall has been solid in the rotation, but the rotation is where we are deep and the bullpen has been a trainwreck. Marshall can prove hugely valuable in that pen and we should remain just fine in the rotation, notwithstanding my increasing angst over Dumpster (might go down as one of the worst contracts in baseball when all is said and done).
BLou - May 27, 2009
Marshall's innings will have to be monitored this season
so a short-term move to the ’pen may make sense, but I wonder if long-term having Wells in the ’pen and Guzman becoming the primary arm v. LHP might make more sense.
DGU - May 27, 2009
The Guzman as the LOOGY idea
is a good one.
nji232 - May 27, 2009
Guzman as LOOGY
this year he equally as effective vs. lefties (small sample size though)
vs. RHB – .171/.239/.341/.581 (47 PAs)
vs LHB – .172/.226/.276/.502 (31 PAs)
For comparison, Cotts vs. LHB
.318/.483/.773/1.255 (29 PAs) (that’s pretty atrocious)
gwood - May 27, 2009
I believe you made the Scales statement
on Friday. Since then he has 1 hit, 3 BB, only 3 SO and 1 Run over 8 at bats.
5 games over which the entire team had one offensively decent showing.
His performance doesn’t trend to you looking wrong, but nowhere near right either.
N Oakley - May 27, 2009
Plus
Scales has been sick. It seems that Piniella is giving him a chance to get better as he was penciled in as the starter yesterday (or maybe it was the day before). I think Blou’s predicition will be way off and Scales is going to get more time, more at-bats, and some success in the next few days.
jerry morales rules - May 27, 2009

That is from the tribune today
nji232 - May 27, 2009
Right, so...
… Marshall stays in the rotation for now, as does Wells. If the Cubs want another LH reliever, they have to either find one in the system or trade for one.

N Oakley - May 27, 2009
I don't mean to start a panic or be Mr. Negative

nji232 - May 27, 2009
Demp
I’d say lay off of Demp. He’s given us the innings we need this year with a poo-poo pen so far, has not returned to the full-on Dumpster days of old, and I personally don’t think he will.
Whil he’s struggled with command, he has given us what we need from him for the most part.
But if you want to discuss the contract, that indeed was definitely way more than he should have been given. Such is life with Cubs/Yanks size payrolls…
The Ryno and I Know - May 27, 2009
the rotation is where we are deep?
really? Where? Z was on the DL. now Harden is on the DL. If you move Marshall back to the pen, you still only have four starters. You gonna call Jeff Spellcheck, with his wonder-fast ball and nothing else up to start? Really?
drewishdrewid - May 27, 2009
Fontenot is turning things around.
It’s only three games, but he’s got a hitting streak going, including two two-hit games, and it looks like the move back to 2B has helped fix his hitting.

Sean Marshall is the real deal. Such a great asset to this team.

heine41 - May 27, 2009
I feel like he plays a different position every night
I could be 100% off on that, but I’ve heard him playing OF, catcher, 3B, and first. None of them well of course
nji232 - May 27, 2009
How bad is he?
I keep hearing how he’s awful on D. What is it? Lack of range? Is he just a big doofus out there? Does he “Ronny Cedeno” his throws? Bad arm? What?
kanderber - May 27, 2009
I have no idea
Just that he is bad. I think I remember him playing rightfield in either 06 or 07 and he didn’t seem any worse than Hoffpauir is now. I kind of wonder if his defensive inability is reaching a bit of hyperbole.
nji232 - May 27, 2009
I'm sure it is - it seems reminiscent to the talk of Hoffpauir.
Last offseason, everyone seemed pretty certain that Hoffpauir was incapable of playing 1B even at a rudimentary level, and that if he ever played the OF people might literally die.
He’s been playing 1B with no incident, and his play in RF, with one memorable exception, has been unremarkable.
D98 - May 27, 2009
What???
Hoffpauir has always been considered a very solid defensive 1B. Nobody knowledgeable claimed that Hoff couldn’t handle first.
It’s his OF defense that has been consistently questioned. And rightfully so. Granted, he has far exceeded those expectations when filling in for Bradley so far this year.
WittyUserName - May 27, 2009
In relation to D-Lee, anyway.
All offseason, the discussion meme was that if Hoffpauir saw serious time at 1B, Aramis and Theriot would post a bunch of 6 error games, because Lee made them appear more competent than they actually were.
D98 - May 27, 2009
if you don't think that Derrek Lee
doesn’t dig out some horrendously thrown balls, then, well. I don’t know what to say. But he’s a gold glover for a reason. And we call Riot “Double Clutch” for a reason too.

He shouldn't be THAT disappointed.
He pitched well, hit well, got a win and credit for a CG (since he pitched the entire game).
Al Yellon - May 27, 2009
The look on his
face when they called the game showed disappointment. That’s why I said that.
sue369 - May 27, 2009
apologies if this has already been suggested
… but I think Marshall should get a look as a Marquis-style pinch-hitter, especially with the depth problems we’ve had recently.
Incidentally, it’s my birthday today, so I’m hoping the Cubs can stretch this winning streak to two and win the series. Keep it up, Cubbies.
elgato - May 27, 2009
Happy Birthday!!!
Hope there is a Cub win for you today.
sue369 - May 27, 2009
thanks, sue!

If Marshall had a perfect game or no-hitter after 5 yesterday
Would he have recieved credit for one in the record books?
nji232 - May 27, 2009
Yes and no.
There’s a separate category for perfect games and no-hitters of less than nine innings. They have quasi-official recognition from MLB.

The Score reporting...
Miles to the 15-day DL, Andres Blanco called up, Fox up, Waddell up, and Cotts down to AAA. I like these moves, let’s see what the new guys can do.
CubsBullsBears - May 27, 2009
Scales also sent down.
CubsBullsBears - May 27, 2009
Why send
Scales down? Is he that sick?
Otherwise I really like all of these moves.
gwood - May 27, 2009
Probably to give Blanco a shot...
I don’t know, just speculating.
CubsBullsBears - May 27, 2009
Blanco plays SS, Scales does not.
And with Miles gone we would otherwise have no backup SS. Scales will be back, I’m sure.
Inkin - May 27, 2009
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
2 weeks of no miles!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
nji232 - May 27, 2009
alright, here we go
Rattling the cage.
Sad to see scales go though

Here's a Chicago Tribune link.
Hopefully, they call Scales back up soon.

So if these sources were wrong about Fox being called up
what’s the certainty they’re accurate on the Cubs not trying to re-acquire DeRo?
