Cubs Minor League Wrap--May 27

Iowa Cubs

The I-Cubs split a double-header with the Sacramento River Cats, losing 3-1 in the first game and taking the nightcap 2-0.

In the first game, Mitch Atkins had a better start than he'd been having lately, giving up three runs on five hits over 5.2 innings. Two of the hits were home runs, accounting for all of Sacramento's runs. One was to Eric Patterson. Atkins did strike out eight while walking three.

Third baseman Nate Spears was 2 for 3 with a double.

In the second game, Kevin Hart pitched four shutout innings, allowing only three hits and two walks. Hart fanned five.

Since Hart didn't go five innings, the win went to Justin Berg, who gave up one hit in a scoreless inning. Berg had one strikeout. The save went to Blake Parker, who threw a scoreless seventh for his third save in AAA. Parker didn't allow a hit, walked one and whiffed two.

In the second game, DH Chris Robinson was 2 for 3 with an RBI double.

Tennessee Smokies

The Smokies were blasted into space by the Huntsville Stars, 4-2.

Hung-Wen Chen gave up a grand slam in the sixth inning, which was all Huntsville needed. Chen pitched pretty well otherwise, going seven innings and allowing only three hits and two walks. One of the four runs was unearned. Chen struck out two Stars.

First baseman Russ Canzler went 2 for 4 with a double. He scored once and batted one in. Right fielder James Adducci was also 2 for 4 and had one RBI.

Daytona Cubs

The D-Cubs were excommunicated by the Palm Beach Cardinals, 6-0.

Starter Ryan Searle got bombed tonight, allowing six runs in 3.1 innings. Searle surrendered seven hits and issued three walks. He struck out only one Cardinal.

The D-Cubs were held to only one hit, a first inning triple by Tyler Colvin.

Peoria Chiefs

The Chiefs scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to come from behind and usurp the Clinton Lumber Kings, 3-2.

Chris Archer was brilliant again tonight. Archer threw five innings and allowed two unearned runs on three hits. Archer walked only one and struck out nine. For the month of May, Archer struck out 31 batters in only 18 innings.

Alberto Cabrera threw the final four innings without allowing a run to collect the win. Cabrera gave up two hits, walked three and struck out two.

I'm sure you're all disappointed, but Josh Vitters did not homer tonight. He did go 2 for 3 and scored once. He was also hit by a pitch.  That counts as a walk, doesn't it?

Happy to see Daytona able to get a game in :)
How will Iowa survive

without Fox ?

They had to have

Jake Fox Jersey Shirt Night tonight without him.

LIttle know fact on threesome call-ups

Non-September three-up call up ….. 2004…… Rey Ordonez, Jimmy Anderson and David Kelton. I would say we only have one way to go from that one, UP!

According to a report in the Des Moines paper Fox and Blanco were very happy with the call up but Waddell was floored and couldn’t believe he was getting a chance. If Fox and Blanco contribute, they will get AB’s. Not sure if Waddell will get in many games with Lou’s history.

Agreed on Waddell

except now Lou has two guys Waddell and Patton that he might not use. One of them has to get some time.

Lou will use Waddell...

… since he is the only lefty in the bullpen. Plus, he’s more of a true LOOGY than Cotts.

If Freel goes on DL

with Scales even be back @ Iowa for a single game?

No, he won't

Piniella was joking to go get him at the airport, wasn’t he?

Sullivan is saying it’s a done deal. Freel to the DL, Scales back to Chicago.

This is crazy

Just need to quote it so everyone catches it…

For the month of May, Archer struck out 31 batters in only 18 innings.

That is incredible.

at worst,

a cheap pen arm in 2010

No

Leave him in the rotation. The other two guys the Cubs got for DeRosa are bullpen arms. Archer was the one with the highest ceiling of the three. The Cubs should leave him as a starter.

Archer's been amazing...

But, we’ve seen a number of guys with big strikeout numbers in A and AA. Hill and Veal quickly come to mind. He’s gotta work on his command. 47Ks and 20 BBs in 35 IP.

Too many walks

agreed.

But he’s only walked one in each of his last two starts, while striking out eight and nine. Both were five inning starts.

And while the walk numbers are high, they aren’t at the point where you think “This guy couldn’t hit a broad side of a barn.” And the walk numbers so far this season are a huge improvement over last season. This year he’s in Donnie Veal territory. Last season, with 84 walks in 115.1 innings, he was in Rick Vaughn territory. So that’s a positive sign.

For some reason

I didn’t get the full effect of how impressive that is until I looked at it as 15.5 K/9…That is almost as good as Strasburg has been doing in college

Parker

Not Parker again! LLittle better than some people think!!

Colvin at Daytona?

Yeesh, that guy has issues

Yeah

Tommy John surgery and a concussion. What are you referring to?
