I don't have the exact quote, but I like what Mike Krukow said about Bobby Scales today. It was something like he may be a rookie up here, but anyone who's played eleven years in the minors is a veteran in my book, and that he knows how to play the game.
Iowa Cubs
The Iowa Cubs heard "Taps" played by the Nashville Sounds in a 8-6 loss.
I had suggested that Mitch Atkins might be the better choice for the start on Friday. I'd like to officially say "never mind." Atkins got shelled for eight runs over 4.2 innings. Atkins got tattooed for seven hits and he walked three. He struck out four and one of the runs was unearned.
The bullpen gave the Cubs a chance to get back into the game. Jesse Estrada pitched 1.1 scoreless innings and then Jayson Ruhlman, Jeff Stevens and Jason Waddell each threw a scoreless inning. Ruhlman was the only one to even allow a lone hit.
Catcher Chris Robinson had three doubles in a 3 for 4 night. Robinson had four RBI and scored once. Right fielder Brad Snyder went 3 for 4 with a double and two runs scored. Center fielder Sam Fuld was 2 for 5 with a double.
Tennessee Smokies
The Smokies were walloped to the Mississippi Braves, 8-1.
Hung-Wen Chen started and allowed two runs, one earned, over two innings. He gave up three hits, one of which was a solo home run. Chen walked two and struck out three.
It looks like Manager Ryne Sandberg pulled Chen early so that a lot of people could get some work in after the several rainouts the Smokies have gone through. Let's just say most of them looked pretty rusty.
The bats and gloves looked just as rusty. Second baseman Tony Thomas was 1 for 4 with a double, but he struck out twice and made two throwing errors.
Daytona Cubs
It's back-to-back shutouts of the Yankees as the D-Cubs blanked the Tampa Yankees, 3-0.
James Leverton evened his record out to 2-2 with a five-inning start. Leverton gave up three hits, walked three and struck out three. Jake Muyco tossed three innings of relief, permitting only two hits and a walk. Muyco fanned one.
David Cales notched his fourth save of the season by pitching the ninth. He recorded the first two outs and then brought the tying run to the plate with a walk and a single before recording the final out.
Second baseman Jake Opitz was 3 for 4 with a run scored. Left fielder Tyler Colvin hit a triple in a 2 for 4 effort. Colvin scored twice. Shortstop Starlin Castro went 2 for 3 with two doubles.
Peoria Chiefs
The Chiefs erased a 6-2 deficit to loosen the Lansing Lugnuts, 7-6.
Starter Aaron Shafer had his worst start of the season by allowing five runs on six hits in five innings. He walked one and didn't strike out anyone.
Mike Perconte got the win in relief. He allowed one run on three hits over two innings. Perconte walked one and struck out two.
Erik Hamren got his fifth save with a scoreless ninth. Hamren allowed one hit and struck out one.
DH Josh Harrison had a big night. He was 4 for 5 with a double and a run scored. Harrison is now hitting .382 on the young season.
Third baseman Josh Vitters hit his second home run on the year the day after getting ejected. Vitters was 2 for 5 with a stolen base.
Shortstop Junior Lake knocked out two hits in five at-bats. He scored once. Center fielder Drew Rundle had two hits in his fourth game since being demoted from Daytona. Rundle was 2 for 4 with a walk, a double and a run scored.

Premiere!
I hereby suggest we start calling Starlin Castro “The Count” since he is from Monte Cristy, Dominican Republic.

I prefer...
… Starlin “Vocal Band” Castro
Al Yellon - May 6, 2009
Or maybe "Afternoon Delight"?
Guess that wouldn’t work too well for night games, though.
daver - May 6, 2009
Or (with a nod to the Shawshank Redemption) we could be nasty and call him “Dum-As”
MadHatterBlues - May 6, 2009
I have a hunch that Jeff Stevens is going to figure in the Cub bullpen situation
And maybe sooner than we think.

Vitters should be playing in Daytona
Enough with making Pete Van Ochen happy. Get Vitters moved up to Daytona. Yesterday.

Al is this a permanent thing?
These wraps on the front page, that is. Just curious, as there doesn’t seem to be much interest, at least based on the amount of comments over the week or so.
kanderber - May 6, 2009
Completely disagree
I love these minor league wraps.
Just because they don’t get a lot of comments doesn’t mean they aren’t worthy. There are plenty of threads around here lately with hundreds of comments that aren’t worth a dime.
MadHatterBlues - May 6, 2009
Exactly (rec)
These are informative, creative, and one of the first things I read online each day.
cubzfan - May 6, 2009
I disagree too
I love reading these and just because there aren’t a lot of comments doesn’t mean that they aren’t front page worthy.
Archie - May 6, 2009
I think
that there aren’t a lot of comments on these things because people don’t really have a lot to say. When Al talks about Carlos Zambrano, everyone has their own $.02 to toss in. People don’t have their own opinions of the minor leagues so they come here to read more than comment.
Of course, maybe I’m biased in that opinion. :-) But I do have over 60 people following me on Twitter, so someone is reading these.
As for my twitter plug: http://twitter.com/Cubsminorswrap

Fair enough, that makes sense.
For the record, I’m not bitching about these posts at all. I was just curious if they’re going to be a fixture here. Personally, I don’t really care about the minor leaguers just cause I have too much other stuff that occupies my time. I’m sure there’s good info to be had here though should I ever want it!
kanderber - May 6, 2009
I put them on the front page late last year...
… and asked people how they felt. The overwhelming majority of people said it was a good idea, so I’m keeping them here, and I gave Josh privileges to post on the front page so he can just do it directly, rather than having to wait for me to move it there.
I think there’s some excellent information being posted here; maybe it’s not for everyone, but I think it’s stuff you can’t get anywhere else, and people have sent Josh some excellent scouting reports already.
Al Yellon - May 6, 2009
...loosen the Lansing lugnuts
nice
Jerry Mumphrey - May 6, 2009
I haven't chimed in lately
but I just want to say that I very much appreciate having this available on a daily basis. Thanks so much for the work you do on the wraps, Josh.
ScottT - May 6, 2009
Agreed.
Thanks, Josh, for taking the time to write this wrap ups. Love having these snapshots of our minor league system. Keep up the great work.

The Chiefs are also selling naming right to their stadium
to the fans! $6,000/game gets you the right to name the stadium, 6′×40′ banners, 50 seats, free drinks, 50 t-shirts, ads on the radio, and a lot more.
We were talking about doing this with my company and basically, that’s about what most 50-person companies spend on company parties… so why not name a stadium after your company for a day and go see some Chiefs baseball? I think this is a great idea.
lswaidz - May 6, 2009
I appreciate
all the good words that people have.

He's never going to make it
if he doesn’t start throwing strikes.
Josh Timmers - May 6, 2009
Same old story with Rich.
Makes me sad.

other news
Garrett Olson was called up to the Mariners today.
