Well, my frame of reference only goes back to the 1980s. But Miles seems to be battling Tom Veryzer for the top spot at this point… and Miles’ hilarious contract may put him over the top.
Where does it rank on the All Time Worst Cub Free Agent Signings?
Obviously, the amount of money isn’t catastrophic. It’s enough to be annoying, though. But the idea of a 2-year, $5M deal for a 32-year old middle infielder with a long, illustrious history of 75 OPS+ seasons…. I think this Miles deal enters the discussion.
There’s going to come a day, and it’s going to come soon in the grand scheme of things, when the Cubs are going to have $12M coming off the books from Dome.
I’m starting to lose hope that Hendry will ever spend the money wisely. But if the team is going to be willing to spend $130M annually, sooner or later someone will acquire some legitimate MLB stars with that money.
I"m not saying that Dome is terrible. He obviously is terrible from time to time, but he has his moments, too. What I’m saying is that the Dome + Bradley + Miles money could get a real, live, elite player, instead of a bunch of compromises and flawed players.
I’m saying that it’s a better bet to pay elite player salaries to actual elite players – the Mark Teixieras of the world – than to spend an equal amount of money on 2 or 3 mediocre players.
Time to end this pitching domination around the league! Lower the mound! Make the baseball BIGGER! Make pitchers pitch from second base! Let batters swing TWO bats at once! Make the fielders play barehanded!
i don't know about sucks...but we are not much better than a .500 team with the people we are putting
out there every day….and we just sent down someone that was hitting over.400 in the minors, and came up and raked for the majors to….would have been nice to have a hitter that was 5 of 6 in pinch hitting roles come in there today….
He may feel that he has to give Miles every chance to succeed, considering that he just wasted $5 million dollars on the guy, and considering that Hendry’s job will almost certainly be up for review with the change in ownership.
But bringing up Miles and sending down Fox hurt the team in a material fashion.
Hendry has an eerie ability to give contracts to his second and third-tier free agent signings which turn out to be the final big contract (or just the final contract) of a given players’ career.
Jeromy Burnitz, Jacque Jones, Daryle Ward, John Mabry, Jose Macias, Neifi Perez, Todd Hollandsworth… I’m sure that there are more.
….well… it wouldn’t say a lot for the new ownership.
At some point, your GM has to be able to point at an offensive player and say “This is what I spent your $135 million dollars on!” The Cubs are making money disappear at an amazing rate, and have nothing to show for it.
1 prospect, no elite offensive threats. Some great starters, I suppose.
1 run in 5.2 inning. Comes out to an ERA around 1.50. What would you prefer? How about 6 hits in 13 innings. Lay the blame where it belongs, with the hitters.
Having a public forum right in front of me makes me want to start ranting, and I’m not doing that. I think I’m going to abstain from watching any games too, at least until I go to one next Friday. I can’t deal with this anymore.
Nah, nothing like that, but I have a lot going on right now running up to my wedding, and this team is such a negative distraction, that I don’t want to put any more focus on them because nothing good is really coming from them at this point. Rather, at least, nothing that makes me happy is coming from them. It’s just time to stop treating things like last year, and just treat it as a game, or just as an interest in the background.
You know, I have a wonderful fiancee who is very supportive of me and my interests, and I don’t want a heavily involved interest in this team to evolve into me being negative at home, or even at work. So, it goes to the background, and I’ll read people’s comments on here, and I’ll joke around, or I’ll catch a score on ESPN, but I’m not sitting through these endless games waiting for this team to be something special. They’re just a regular old team at this point, playing a game that’s been around for years. They’ll come around in time, but for now, I’m done spending what seems like every minute of my day waiting for them to come around.
is the envy of mlb; the bullpen is rounding into form (heilman, esp). our offense WILL be there. i cannot take a negative perspective at this point. we will get a wild card at the very least…

Lets hope for a 14th inning
cubbiepride - June 11, 2009
Kettle-cooked Cape Cod potato chips are the best...
The best, Jerry. The best!
ballhawk - June 11, 2009
love me some grippos bbq
Hawk8 - June 11, 2009
yeah...
… you want that meal, don’t ya?
duboisdm - June 11, 2009
Kettle Chips
Sea Salt & Vinegar.
wallrock - June 11, 2009
Stop talking about food!
Unless you plan to share!!!
(Can you tell I’m hungry?)
cowsarecool220 - June 11, 2009
i feel ya
i’m hungry too.
Allie - June 11, 2009
Cubs game on the radio and game thread on the Mac weren't enough
so I got opened up a bag of chips, cracked open a diet Coke and now watching The Simpsons on TV.
ballhawk - June 11, 2009
multi-tasking?
cowsarecool220 - June 11, 2009
oh, and I now have the Sox game on the other tv.
But that is definitely on mute…
ballhawk - June 11, 2009
wonder if they wish they had lee in there....
Zakh - June 11, 2009
Tejada, Pence and Michaels to face Ascanio
BleedsbluinMI - June 11, 2009
It sounds terrible when you put it like that
vonde6 - June 11, 2009
ascanio has been really good though
when lou remember he’s on the team.
Allie - June 11, 2009
Sorry
I saw the game where he rifled the ball at the batter’s legs, and knocked him down
vonde6 - June 11, 2009
Nice play Bobby!
slcathena - June 11, 2009
Scales guns him at first, one dwon
BleedsbluinMI - June 11, 2009
Great play!
SackMan - June 11, 2009
2-0 on Pence
BleedsbluinMI - June 11, 2009
3-1
BleedsbluinMI - June 11, 2009
just walk him...
… Pence scares me.
duboisdm - June 11, 2009
We've been over this before
He scares you because he freakishly looks like the Scarecrow from the Wizard of Oz
vonde6 - June 11, 2009
he looks
more like a grasshopper to me – but that’s why, or only why, he scares me.
duboisdm - June 11, 2009
Shh. Shh.
Don’t be scared. Just because he looks like he has chicken legs doesn’t mean he’s some hybrid monster.
Clutch16 - June 11, 2009
3-1
SackMan - June 11, 2009
Ball four
BleedsbluinMI - June 11, 2009
Rockies win again
SackMan - June 11, 2009
sure wouldn't want to play them right now....wow
Zakh - June 11, 2009
cubs are never gonna be able to sign another pitcher
nobody wants to throw seven innings of one run ball and not get a win
RightFieldSucks - June 11, 2009
Yep.
They’re just going to pack up shop as these guys retire.
slcathena - June 11, 2009
now get
the dp
duboisdm - June 11, 2009
2 runs in the last 24 innings? what the.....?
Zakh - June 11, 2009
you sound surprised
RightFieldSucks - June 11, 2009
more disgusted, worn out....making my twice yearly trip in to chicago next week to watch the cubs,
and i want to see some good ball
Zakh - June 11, 2009
that means we're due, right?
Allie - June 11, 2009
Yep.
slcathena - June 11, 2009
Yep.
Jimmyeatworld - June 11, 2009
like your style!
Zakh - June 11, 2009
When your 25-man roster has no real offensive threat....
…this is what happens.
D98 - June 11, 2009
what floor are you on?
ballhawk - June 11, 2009
So when did it become 1968?
Time to end this pitching domination around the league! Lower the mound! Make the baseball BIGGER! Make pitchers pitch from second base! Let batters swing TWO bats at once! Make the fielders play barehanded!
LET’S GET SOME RUNS! This is re-dick-you-louse…
Zeke - June 11, 2009
Dead ball era, redux?
Or just the end of the juiced player era?
Clutch16 - June 11, 2009
You don't have to be juiced to play fundamentally sound baseball using walks, hit and runs, steals, etc.
You can’t base your offense on a singe player and the 3-run homer…
Zeke - June 11, 2009
singe=single
Zeke - June 11, 2009
we could have another expansion....
Zakh - June 11, 2009
Look at those Astros players
We have had another expansion
vonde6 - June 11, 2009
Michaels batting, 1-1
one down, one on
BleedsbluinMI - June 11, 2009
1-2
cubbiepride - June 11, 2009
damn good pitching today
RightFieldSucks - June 11, 2009
that's looking
at the glass half full!
duboisdm - June 11, 2009
i'm just glad we got dempster off the hook for the loss
that would’ve been crap.
Allie - June 11, 2009
When I heard the score I just assumed Randy Wells had started...
Zeke - June 11, 2009
Poor guy
At least he knows it isn’t just him… that might “help” a little, right?
Allie - June 11, 2009
K, Pence steals 2nd
BleedsbluinMI - June 11, 2009
I imagine him making clucking noises as he runs
Clutch16 - June 11, 2009
ah, that was half good...
Zakh - June 11, 2009
I know you have to do it,
but I hate IBB in extra innings. I just do.
ScottieG33 - June 11, 2009
So much better than a Berkman single.
slcathena - June 11, 2009
please, please, please don't let this guy beat us again....get him out!
Zakh - June 11, 2009
IBB to Berkman
wallrock - June 11, 2009
IBB for Fat Elvis, Blum will bat with 2 on
You know Blum from yesterday…
BleedsbluinMI - June 11, 2009
Quoting Pat
“Blum’s been a killer.”
So I raise the point again… are we correct to walk to get to Blum when the guy seems to always come through against us?
Reddevil - June 11, 2009
I don't love
the idea of pitching to Berkman
duboisdm - June 11, 2009
It was Ron who said it, and yes, it is the right move.
Jimmyeatworld - June 11, 2009
good call.
Reddevil - June 11, 2009
The right move doesn't always work...
It’s still the right move.
Jimmyeatworld - June 11, 2009
Just sayin
There’s justification for pitching to Berkman…That being Blum is a Cub Killer.
But with this team there doesn’t seem to be a right move.
Have a good one.
Reddevil - June 11, 2009
Berkman's been killing us too lately.
slcathena - June 11, 2009
How is this game STILL GOING ON????
drewishdrewid - June 11, 2009
Because the offense is as flacid as
well…you know…
Craig in South Bend - June 11, 2009
a battle of offensive incompetence
DartmouthCubsFan - June 11, 2009
Cause we can't hit crap.
sue369 - June 11, 2009
or apparently anything else for that matter Sue
Zeke - June 11, 2009
Welcome back, Drew
We saved it for ya.
Clutch16 - June 11, 2009
The Cubs were sad that I didn't get here until the 8th...
slcathena - June 11, 2009
that is a big no call....
Zakh - June 11, 2009
huh?
duboisdm - June 11, 2009
That was a strike!
Jimmyeatworld - June 11, 2009
By the time this season is done
this team will have played the equivalent of over 200 games.
Craig in South Bend - June 11, 2009
FML
Reddevil - June 11, 2009
Great minds.
Bleurgh.
slcathena - June 11, 2009
+1 for great minds
-everything re: this team.
The humanity.
Reddevil - June 11, 2009
Blum dwon the rf line, game over
BleedsbluinMI - June 11, 2009
FML
slcathena - June 11, 2009
and now
it’s over.
Second time I’ve come back to a game late and they’ve lost. I think I won’t do that anymore.
drewishdrewid - June 11, 2009
yeah, busted my ass to finish my work early for this?
Zakh - June 11, 2009
i hate that guy...seriously....2-1 again...wtf?
Zakh - June 11, 2009
I'm outta here.
See ya tomorrow.
sue369 - June 11, 2009
Me too
See ya tomorrow. :(
slcathena - June 11, 2009
this team SUCKS
neifi - June 11, 2009
Yes, the Astros do...
Jimmyeatworld - June 11, 2009
i don't know about sucks...but we are not much better than a .500 team with the people we are putting
out there every day….and we just sent down someone that was hitting over.400 in the minors, and came up and raked for the majors to….would have been nice to have a hitter that was 5 of 6 in pinch hitting roles come in there today….
Zakh - June 11, 2009
That's on Hendry.
He may feel that he has to give Miles every chance to succeed, considering that he just wasted $5 million dollars on the guy, and considering that Hendry’s job will almost certainly be up for review with the change in ownership.
But bringing up Miles and sending down Fox hurt the team in a material fashion.
D98 - June 11, 2009
I can see Miles
is turning into the modern-day Jacque Jones, at least as far as the fans are concerned.
Not Bruce Froemming - June 11, 2009
why - is he starting to bounce his throws over to first? ;-)
ballhawk - June 11, 2009
LOL
Not Bruce Froemming - June 11, 2009
I think it will follow a pretty familiar pattern.
D98 - June 11, 2009
yeah
we’re really not very good right now.
at least not at getting big hits. pitching is still fantastic
Allie - June 11, 2009
We've seen this ending before.
cowsarecool220 - June 11, 2009
Hard to win when you score 1 run
Stupid. Sigh.
Allie - June 11, 2009
Soto strikes again
Sure, keep calling changeups. Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me.
cubfred - June 11, 2009
Two body blows
in 24 hours. Ugh.
Still, only 2.5 out after all this ridiculousness.
Not Bruce Froemming - June 11, 2009
True
wallrock - June 11, 2009
I can imagine what the playoffs would be like scoring .66 runs per nine innings
RightFieldSucks - June 11, 2009
Sort of like last year
Not fun.
chitownhawkeye - June 11, 2009
Well, if they maintain that average the rest of the season,
they won’t be in the playoffs.
Long time ’til October.
Not Bruce Froemming - June 11, 2009
thank god we are coming home...we need it... 2 of 3 against the stros?
Zakh - June 11, 2009
I'm sure the Cardinals were asking themselves
We just got swept in four games by the Rockies?
Stuff happens. 4-4 road trip. Should have been better, wasn’t a disaster.
Not Bruce Froemming - June 11, 2009
Think the Cubs pitchers can muster up a class action suit against the Cubs hitters?
Zeke - June 11, 2009
they'd win in absentia since naturally, the hitters would fail to show up
RightFieldSucks - June 11, 2009
The Cubs
have hitters?
jaxinnabox - June 11, 2009
batters is more accurate
RightFieldSucks - June 11, 2009
The Cubs
have class?
JK. Just wrote it because the line was there begging to be written.
mattvegas - June 11, 2009
They have uniforms and everything
Craig in South Bend - June 11, 2009
If Hendry survives the change in ownership...
D98 - June 11, 2009
Resisting...urge...to...explode
Craig in South Bend - June 11, 2009
AGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
See you kids tomorrow.
Tangled Up In Blue - June 11, 2009
I bet if they tried hard
They could have lost in 9 innings.
PS Twinkies bullpen screwed up today too so they won’t be in a good mood either.
Doggie Stalker - June 11, 2009
I don't think the Cubs bullpen "screwed up" today, DS
The offense didn’t hit.
Not Bruce Froemming - June 11, 2009
twinkies=twins
RightFieldSucks - June 11, 2009
I know
She said their bullpen screwed up today “too,” implying the Cubs bullpen screwed up.
Not Bruce Froemming - June 11, 2009
I just meant the Twins had an equally frustrating loss
Could have phrased it better. They blew a 3 run lead and lost in the bottom of the 9th.
Doggie Stalker - June 11, 2009
3 run lead?
Whats that feel like?
Allie - June 11, 2009
Bullpen
1 run in 5.2 inning. Comes out to an ERA around 1.50. What would you prefer? How about 6 hits in 13 innings. Lay the blame where it belongs, with the hitters.
cubfred - June 11, 2009
Another 0-6 RISP
8 LOB.
I really miss our offense.
Allie - June 11, 2009
This team is
making me miss my mind also.
Reddevil - June 11, 2009
I gotta split and do something else
Having a public forum right in front of me makes me want to start ranting, and I’m not doing that. I think I’m going to abstain from watching any games too, at least until I go to one next Friday. I can’t deal with this anymore.
Craig in South Bend - June 11, 2009
"I can't deal with this anymore"
No offense, Craig, but if we’re getting to the point where posts are reading like suicide notes, maybe you should take a breather.
Not Bruce Froemming - June 11, 2009
lol
Nah, nothing like that, but I have a lot going on right now running up to my wedding, and this team is such a negative distraction, that I don’t want to put any more focus on them because nothing good is really coming from them at this point. Rather, at least, nothing that makes me happy is coming from them. It’s just time to stop treating things like last year, and just treat it as a game, or just as an interest in the background.
Craig in South Bend - June 11, 2009
Good thought
and congrats on your wedding. Perspective is a wonderful thing.
Not Bruce Froemming - June 11, 2009
Thanks
You know, I have a wonderful fiancee who is very supportive of me and my interests, and I don’t want a heavily involved interest in this team to evolve into me being negative at home, or even at work. So, it goes to the background, and I’ll read people’s comments on here, and I’ll joke around, or I’ll catch a score on ESPN, but I’m not sitting through these endless games waiting for this team to be something special. They’re just a regular old team at this point, playing a game that’s been around for years. They’ll come around in time, but for now, I’m done spending what seems like every minute of my day waiting for them to come around.
Craig in South Bend - June 11, 2009
so does that mean you'll trade me Matt Holliday for Milton Bradley? ;-)
you are 588-2300 Empire aren’t you?
ballhawk - June 11, 2009
Sure!
Craig in South Bend - June 11, 2009
Miles+Bradley=another heart precedure for Hendry.
propheteer - June 11, 2009
well I was going to ask for Torii Hunter but that would have been a bit too lopsided... ;-)
I’m tired of waiting for MB to get healthy and rake the ball. Maybe a change of scenery of the fantasy nature would help. Check your e-mail…
ballhawk - June 11, 2009
our starting pitching
is the envy of mlb; the bullpen is rounding into form (heilman, esp). our offense WILL be there. i cannot take a negative perspective at this point. we will get a wild card at the very least…
