Iowa Cubs
The Iowa Cubs lost to the Oklahoma City RedHawks, 5-1.
Jeff Samardzija had a rough night tonight, allowing four runs on eight hits over six innings. He did strike out four and walked only one.
Left fielder John-Ford Griffin was 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI.
Ryan Freel was 1 for 3 in his rehab appearance. Farney did not play.
Tennessee Smokies
The Smokies were caught sleeping by the Mobile Bay Bears, 5-2.
Starter Casey Lambert saw his record fall to 4-5 when he got knocked around for five runs on eleven hits over 5.1 innings. Lambert added three more base runners by the walk. He struck out two. One of the runs was unearned.
Left fielder Tyler Colvin had his second AA home run, a solo shot in the fifth. Colvin was 1 for 4 total.
Catcher Blake Lalli was 3 for 4 with a run scored. Center fielder James Adduci also went 3 for 4.

The D-Cubs edged the St. Lucie Mets, 5-4.
Starter Rafael Dolis struggled tonight. He surrendered three runs on two hits and four walks. Dolis walked four.
Dustin Sassser got the win when the Cubs scored in the bottom of the eighth. Sasser threw two shutout innings. He allowed one hit, a double, and no walks. He struck out two.
Third baseman Jake Opitz had two doubles in a 2 for 4 night. Opitz scored once and batted two in.
Catcher Robinson Chirinos stayed hot by going 2 for 4 with one double and two runs scored.
Center fielder Tony Campana had his 15th stolen base in a 2 for 4 evening. Campana scored once.
Peoria Chiefs
The Chiefs swept a double-header from the Quad City River Bandits, 8-0 and 5-4.
In the first game, Chris Carpenter had a complete game seven-inning shutout. Carpenter allowed only three singles and didn't walk a batter, although he did hit one. Curiously, he only struck out one River Bandit, which I believe is his lowest total of the season.
Shortstop Junior Lake hit his third home run on the year in a 2 for 3 game. He also scored twice.
First baseman Rebel Ridling went 2 for 4 with a run scored.
In the second game, starter Alberto Cabrera allowed four runs on four hits over 4.2 innings. Cabrera walked two and struck out five.
Manolin De Leon picked up the win in relief by not allowing a run over 2.1 innings. He gave up two hits, walked one and struck out one.
Rebel Ridling continued his good night in the second game by going 2 for 4 again. This time he had two RBI.
Junior Lake didn't miss a beat moving over to second base. He went 2 for 4 with a double and a run scored.
Catcher Mario Mercedes was 2 for 4 with a run scored.

Tough outting for Lambert
The Caseys at AA have been great this year.

LOL
Nice one about Farney. But seriously, shouldn’t Farney be given a chance for some ABs? I wonder how his fielding is. Can it be worse than Jake Fox?
zevkalman - June 16, 2009
I'd rather have Farney than Aaron Miles.
Al Yellon - June 16, 2009
Every Jeff Samardzija start
brings me closer to thinking his future lies in middle relief. A la Angel Guzman, though for reasons of not being good rather than being injured.
nji232 - June 16, 2009
Spellcheck is Kevin Hart and Jon Leicester redux
Samardizija is insanely overrated. If not for the hype generated from his two-sport career at Notre Dame he wouldn’t be much talked about at all.
BLou - June 16, 2009
If Samardzija could have the type of year that Guzman is having now
then I’d be happy. Not happy about the guaranteed Major League contract right out of Notre Dame, but I’d take another dominant reliever. Samardzija, Marmol, Guzman wouldn’t be the worst bullpen (and Gregg would be gone).

Like the last start
When he went 6 innings and gave up 1 earned run. He also had a triple and an RBI.

Josh, is it fair to say...
…that the three most major league viable prospects in the system right now are???.
Jay Jackson
Andrew Cashner
Josh Vitters
I’ll omit Brett Jackson and members of the 2009 draft class from the equation for now.
BLou - June 16, 2009
I don't know
what your definition of “major league viable prospects” is, but I’d certainly put those three at the top of all prospects lists, along with Samardzija.
Josh Timmers - June 16, 2009
we got some good arms in the 2008 draft

Speaking of the Redhawks....
I had heard Andre Dawson was gonna do a promo night in OKC in late July. I was planning on attending anyway. Low and behold my son’s t-ball team was invited the other night to take the field with him and the Redhawks before the game! Coach says to me wanna help me out on the field? I say Of Course!! I will have my camera and and a Cub jersey, hopefully I can get him to sign and take a picture with my son and I.
cubsluver22 - June 16, 2009
I forgot we even had Freel
bummer : /
Bricks and Ivy - June 16, 2009
Desi Wilson and Freel
Desi Wilson was named AAA hitting coach today replacing Von Joshua. Ryan Freel hit leadoff last night for hte I-cubs. don’t know if there is anything that can be read into that or not. Probably just getting more AB’s hitting #1.

Josh when do you see Carpenter getting bumped up a level?
Glacier - June 16, 2009
I think
he’ll stay in Peoria a while, but injuries could change that. If Daytona needs a pitcher, he might get promoted sooner.
Josh Timmers - June 16, 2009
Really?
I was hoping it’d be sooner. I think he has the ability to move up. I guess it’s maybe because I am pretty high on him personally. You see him sticking as a starter? do you know how his change is developing? It’d be nice to have a good change with his fastball and slider.
Glacier - June 16, 2009
Carpenter
I’ll bet its close to the Midwest League all star game he moves up and if the change developes it would surely help him.
Slamdog - June 16, 2009
do you have
any idea on how well it has developed this year?
Glacier - June 16, 2009
To be honest
I’m just guessing based on previous patterns. He could get called up tomorrow for all I know.
Josh Timmers - June 16, 2009
Carpenter
I think he will move up aroung late July/early August (past the MWL All-Star game) when a guy like Rusin from the 09 Draft is ready to come up to Peoria.
Raisin - June 16, 2009
Yes
This is what I was trying to say.
Josh Timmers - June 16, 2009
gotcha
thanks guys
