He had a chance to drive in a run every freakin time he was up!!
It’s called a HOME RUN and it’s about time somebody on this team starting hitting some. Relying on 3 singles and a sac fly to score a run doesn’t cut. Sooner or later, somebody’s gotta swing a BIG bat.
But my expectations of Miles, Fonty, Dome, Bradley, et al are just much lower than most. So I actually think we’re seeing what Hendry paid for, essentially.
but I didn’t expect to see Soriano plummet like this, and while I thought Soto repeating last year’s numbers might have been a stretch, I didn’t expect him to fall off a cliff.
was going to have a hard time duplicating last year, espcially coming into camp overweight.
I did expect better from the two of them, though, also. It’s just that overall, I thought the offense probably WOULD struggle, mostly due to the aforementioned players and overall RISP problems thereof, and am not all that surprised.
Still….at some point you expect every offense to play over their heads for some stretch of time — so WHAT THE HELL, MAN!?!?!?!?!
What the hell can I possibly do with these players, my best player is hurt, no money to trade, veterans aren’t hitting… I wish I was in Tampa sipping on a sangria.
This is only partly Piniella’s fault and much less blame should be pointed at him than every single one of the players right now. But that said, he’s paid to manage and when he pulls the “What can I do?” routine out of the hat, it’s time to tell him he’s done. Trained chimpanzees can sit there and do nothing. If he doesn’t have the sack to sit Soriano or Soto or Fontenot or Bradley or Miles down for an extended period of time, then his value as a manager is absolutely zero. There are other options…perhaps not better ones, but options nonetheless. And if guys like the aforementioned are going to continue to fail to contribute, you move on with someone else.
I really think there is a pile of evidence that it’s far worse than “cold”. It’s an epidemic of guys either in the middle of career lows, or their careers are now in decline. It’s really that simple. They are averaging less than 3 runs per game over the last 27 games, the first of which started their 8 game slide. That’s not cold…that’s atrocious.
So what do you do? Whatever you can which includes sitting anyone and everyone that isn’t hitting. Is that rash? Probably. But the only other options is to sit there with a hand full of fools gold that these guys are going to hit.
I’m tired of the “small sample size” argument. The sample size above shows that through 44% of the games this year, the Cubs are averaging consecutively less than 3 runs. Start by benching Soriano and Soto. Next up is Bradley and Fontenot. Lastly, find somewhere other than a baseball diamond to hide Aaron Miles.
But if you think it’s ugly now, wait until Ramirez comes back and if he doesn’t immediately hit and provide a spark, this season is going to get beyond ass-ugly.
I should have been clearer. Starting tomorrow, put anyone on their roster named Soriano and Fontenot on the bench and replace them with Fox and Blanco. No sure bets to improve but worth a shot.
Next, if that doesn’t work, sit down Bradley and Miles…for an extended period of time. If that doesn’t work, move on to the next hitter in the middle of a career worst year. There are plenty of them to find.
The only other option is to sit there and do what Lou’s doing….throw up his hands. To me, that’s not the way to manage.
You don’t sit him for an extended period unless he’s hurt. I do agree Soriano needs to either sit or go on the DL in favor of Fox. Fontenot can hit RHP; he should face those pitchers, not Blanco, who’s not a good hitter. The only reason Fontenot is facing LHP is because there’s no one here to play third base.
He gave the team a +.900 OPS last season in 284 PAs.
He’s been forced out of position this season and, yes, he’s struggled. But he’s picked it up this month – he’s hit for a .793 OPS with a .383 OBP. No one is hitting consistently right now besides perhaps DLee.
People have been saying “it can’t get worse” for the past month….and guess what, it’s continued to be just as worse. I suppose technically it can’t get “worse” but it sure as hell can continue to be just as absolutely atrocious as its been. I keep pointing it out but it’s fools gold to suggest these guys are going to hit just because their track record is as such. If they’re in the middle of a “track record regression” they better do something other than just wait around for guys to hit.
“Cubsment Day” sounds like the wussiest day ever. “Oh no, oh god, it’s Cubsment Day. The day when we all suddenly become below average performers at everything we do”
“And, lo, you will stand before the Lord and declare your allegiance. And if thou dost bleed Cubbie blue He will look upon you, sadness in his eyes, and usher you in as you peacefully states, ‘You have suffered enough, my son. Welcome.’”
but anyway one looks at it – being at the bottom of the NL with success at RISP, plus an empty out in the lead-off position, is obviously a formula for disaster.
I do not know if Lou has the energy anymore, as Al pointed to previously, to deal with this.
Reed Johnson had 4 LOB by himself today. He should have been playing more during Dome’s abysmal slump. Soto, I agree, needs some days off. He K’s or pops out, way too much to be in the 5 hole – and, it seems as if he is losing balls in the dirt more than I recall.
Miles – TWO YEARS?! Hendry!!!! You’re FIRED!
So – I suggest we all start a letter writing campaign to the GM and Crane Kenny. Who have not been found much these days.

+1
Itchy - June 17, 2009
Just about everyone is ice cold, though.
You can’t bench the whole team.
daver - June 17, 2009
I'd like to see some of these young bats in the lineup more
Maybe jump start the O, and then deal with the Def. deficiencies that will come
BleedsbluinMI - June 17, 2009
Matter of opinion
But if you think it’s ugly now, wait until Ramirez comes back and if he doesn’t immediately hit and provide a spark, this season is going to get beyond ass-ugly.
krummy12 - June 17, 2009
But just about EVERYONE isn't hitting.
You have to put nine players on the field.
daver - June 17, 2009
Obviously
I should have been clearer. Starting tomorrow, put anyone on their roster named Soriano and Fontenot on the bench and replace them with Fox and Blanco. No sure bets to improve but worth a shot.
Next, if that doesn’t work, sit down Bradley and Miles…for an extended period of time. If that doesn’t work, move on to the next hitter in the middle of a career worst year. There are plenty of them to find.
The only other option is to sit there and do what Lou’s doing….throw up his hands. To me, that’s not the way to manage.
krummy12 - June 17, 2009
Bradley's already missed enough time as it is.
You don’t sit him for an extended period unless he’s hurt. I do agree Soriano needs to either sit or go on the DL in favor of Fox. Fontenot can hit RHP; he should face those pitchers, not Blanco, who’s not a good hitter. The only reason Fontenot is facing LHP is because there’s no one here to play third base.
daver - June 17, 2009
he's hitting righties at a .257 clip
Fontenot isn’t hitting anyone
WanderingWanderer - June 17, 2009
Again, that's not good but not as bad as you make it sound.
No one on this team is hitting – and I love Andres Blanco’s defense but he’s not an offensive solution.
daver - June 17, 2009
Exactly...
He has direct control over the lineup he puts out there. Make some changes, don’t contemplate sitting people or think about changes… make them!
CubsBullsBears - June 17, 2009
I'm just glad Fox is back. Now maybe the offense will perk up a bit.
santoswoodenlegs - June 17, 2009
Ha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BleedsbluinMI - June 17, 2009
Good heavens!

How are you at hitting a baseball? Can you recognize a breaking pitch?

DamonBerryhillsMitt - June 17, 2009
we said that about Lou once upon a time
WanderingWanderer - June 17, 2009
i think alan trammell could manage this team better than lou.
lexmarklover - June 17, 2009
I think Alan Alda could manage this team better than Lou.
santoswoodenlegs - June 17, 2009
How about Donald Sutherland?
Shanghai Badger - June 17, 2009
Kiefer Sutherland would be fun to watch in the dugout
if someone got him some drinks
WanderingWanderer - June 17, 2009
We're running out of time!
Where is the bomb?!?
Yeah, I could see it.
Clutch16 - June 17, 2009
The bomb is on the field

DamonBerryhillsMitt - June 17, 2009
There's got to be something

Gary Burghoff for bench coach.

daver - June 17, 2009
Alan Alda has the greatest voice evar
Hearing those pipes in the clubhouse could inspire anybody to play
Fresca - June 17, 2009
Heres what lou should do
Fox in left for soriano, blanco at second for the rest of his life, and play freel when he’s back at third permanently till Ramirez returns
lexmarklover - June 17, 2009
can we just have Blanco at second until the end of the season?
I’m certain a new GM would be able to find better options
WanderingWanderer - June 17, 2009
How about SS?
Riot and Fonty could platoon at 2B.
Clutch16 - June 17, 2009
how about Riot at second, and Fonty can rot on the bench
WanderingWanderer - June 17, 2009
I think LBR needs a breather
We’ll see if he gets on when Farney gets back to the big-league club.
Clutch16 - June 17, 2009
he needs to be on another team
WanderingWanderer - June 17, 2009
He's not that bad.
daver - June 17, 2009
He's not that good either.
santoswoodenlegs - June 17, 2009
nor is he very good.
WanderingWanderer - June 17, 2009
He gave the team a +.900 OPS last season in 284 PAs.
He’s been forced out of position this season and, yes, he’s struggled. But he’s picked it up this month – he’s hit for a .793 OPS with a .383 OBP. No one is hitting consistently right now besides perhaps DLee.
daver - June 17, 2009
Then Theriot would rarely play.
daver - June 17, 2009
no comment
santoswoodenlegs - June 17, 2009
Freel?
Not so much.
If Soriano ever gets his head out of his ass, put Fox at 3B.
Shanghai Badger - June 17, 2009
I don't think that's every going to happen
lexmarklover - June 17, 2009
Agree.
Lou’s not gonna do it. Fox getting into the lineup will have to be at either Soriano or Bradley’s expense.
daver - June 17, 2009
I think he meant Sori's not getting his head out of his ass....
Shanghai Badger - June 17, 2009
That actually couldn't be any worse offensively than the past month.
santoswoodenlegs - June 17, 2009
Never bet against the 09 Cubs' offensive impotency.
Fresca - June 17, 2009
Remember
People have been saying “it can’t get worse” for the past month….and guess what, it’s continued to be just as worse. I suppose technically it can’t get “worse” but it sure as hell can continue to be just as absolutely atrocious as its been. I keep pointing it out but it’s fools gold to suggest these guys are going to hit just because their track record is as such. If they’re in the middle of a “track record regression” they better do something other than just wait around for guys to hit.
krummy12 - June 17, 2009
When Freel is back, Fontenot can go back to second base vs. RHP.
daver - June 17, 2009
where he'll continue to pop up weakly
WanderingWanderer - June 17, 2009
Hmm.. I don't know what to say to that suggestion..
Fresca - June 17, 2009
Is there any place
To hear the post game show online? It’s not on WGN.com and the MLB app on the iphone just stops broadcasting after the game….

It's just going to be a bunch of people calling in and bitching, anyway
Kind of like here . . . can’t …turn…away…

WanderingWanderer - June 17, 2009
I also think it's pretty funny they're campaigning for Soriano and Dome to make the allstar team
might be the only place you’ll hear anyone claim they deserve to go
WanderingWanderer - June 17, 2009
I have a feeling this Soriano at second thing is coming
Lou won’t take him out, and Fontenot or Miles will get the bench.

Fresca - June 17, 2009
You mean he didn't hit into a 1-3
In every AB?
Clutch16 - June 17, 2009
HAHAHAHA
It scares me that Lou might actually think that double was a sign and continue to play him.
nji232 - June 17, 2009
I don't think it would have mattered if he'd gone 0-5
the fact that Miles was in today shows Lou is rewarding him for good play
WanderingWanderer - June 17, 2009
isn't, I meant isn't
WanderingWanderer - June 17, 2009
losing to the White Sox doesn't even bother me
looking pathetic and lethargic every game for the past month is what really makes me mad.
lexmarklover - June 17, 2009
Scary stat
A. Miles had 100% of the Cubs’ extra-base hits today.
Fresca - June 17, 2009
And accounted for the only run
Mapmaker - June 17, 2009
How can we start Mr .200 at 2nd everyday?
when Grudzelandek is sitting at home doing nothing??
Itchy - June 17, 2009
If we're going to give Miles over 4 million for 2 years...
what do you think Grudz is going to want?
santoswoodenlegs - June 17, 2009
considering no one else is calling
the league minimum with a chance to show he can still play
WanderingWanderer - June 17, 2009
Why not?

I think its a pretty good idea

“Cubsment Day” sounds like the wussiest day ever. “Oh no, oh god, it’s Cubsment Day. The day when we all suddenly become below average performers at everything we do”
Fresca - June 17, 2009
Yup.
“And, lo, you will stand before the Lord and declare your allegiance. And if thou dost bleed Cubbie blue He will look upon you, sadness in his eyes, and usher you in as you peacefully states, ‘You have suffered enough, my son. Welcome.’”

neverAcquiesce - June 17, 2009

Clutch16 - June 17, 2009
There are some things that make sense
but anyway one looks at it – being at the bottom of the NL with success at RISP, plus an empty out in the lead-off position, is obviously a formula for disaster.
Less than three RPG? This cannot continue. UGH!
