This game had a little bit of everything we've seen this season:
And yet, it wasn't any of those things that finally won the game for the Cubs. It was Alfonso Soriano taking off for second base, somewhat ill-advisedly, we thought, but stealing his first base since June 5, and that set up Ryan Theriot's bouncer that took a weird bounce over Victor Martinez's glove into right field. Soriano raced around third and scored easily; it's the Cubs' third straight walkoff win, 8-7 over the Indians in ten innings -- just before another severe thunderstorm hit the north side of Chicago. (Thanks to BCB reader Clutch16 for posting the two extra overflow threads for this extra-long game.)
And in case you thought Derrek Lee's game-tying homer in the bottom of the ninth came close to us in the left field corner, that's about the closest we've ever gotten to a ball since we moved to that section in 2006. Jessica got her hand on it, but didn't want to fight the three twentysomething men who were diving all over themselves to get the ball. (We spotted one of them later taking a picture of the ball with his cellphone camera and sending it to several friends.)
Where do I begin? How about with Rich Harden's lack of command? He had a quiet first inning, then gave up a triple (which probably should have been an error to Reed Johnson, who had the ball in his glove), a walk, and a three-run homer to Luis Valbuena (who?). Another three-run homer followed a pair of walks in the second, this one by Martinez. The Tribe sent it out to 7-0 with another run in the fourth, and Harden was done an inning later, having slogged through 87 pitches in five innings.
Somewhere in the early innings -- the exact play, I can't remember -- former Cub Mark DeRosa chased a foul ball down the line and banged his knee into the bricks just beyond where the last padding is on the wall. He appeared seriously hurt at first but got up and stayed in the game, leaving on a double switch in the ninth. DeRosa was given a standing ovation on his first appearance in the batter's box in the first inning, and after that, was treated pretty much like any other opponent. This, I think, is fitting -- the ovation was an acknowledgement of his contributions here. For the day he was 1-for-3 with a strikeout and two walks.
When Harden left the game, my friend Phil said to me, "They're going to come back today like they did in that Colorado game you missed last year." And darned if he wasn't right. Before you give Phil too much credit, he also said that Jake Fox was going to hit three home runs today. Not so, Phil -- Fox went 0-for-4 with a walk, but handled three chances in the field flawlessly. I'd give Fox more starts at 3B vs. lefthanded pitching.Meanwhile, the Cubs were mounting that comeback, starting with Johnson's solo homer, one of three Cubs dingers, continuing with D-Lee's first homer of the game, and then the big four-run rally off three Cleveland relievers in the eighth that made the score 7-6. And then...
... came Kerry Wood, the third of the returned ex-Cubs. Wood had blown only two saves before today, but his bigger problem this year has been an inability to retire hitters outside of Cleveland. Coming in, he had a 7.27 ERA on the road, and Lee's blast into our section tied the game, setting up Theriot's heroics...
... but only after Kevin Gregg gave us some excitement in the top of the tenth. It wasn't all his fault; Lee dropped a windblown foul popup, and Soriano charged ahead on a sinking line drive that he had in his glove and then dropped, so Gregg had to get five outs, essentially, in the inning, and he made it even more exciting when he hit Ben Francisco to load the bases. And then Kosuke Fukudome, who had come in on a double switch, nearly overran pinch-hitter Ryan Garko's line drive, but caught it with his glove high over his head.
I think I got everything, but maybe I haven't captured the way in which this Cubs team seems, at last, to have begun to carve out an identity for itself. Maybe it's appropriate, in some strange way, that this happened when two players so identified as Cubs in the last two playoff seasons came in wearing visiting uniforms. Today, perhaps, we move on... and continue winning.

I look forward to
watching the replay after work!

Nicely done.
I saw this yesterday. Let’s get it posted every day.
Al Yellon - June 19, 2009
props
to my wife, who did the actual work of putting it together, and to Badger, who wanted it.
:D
I could do without the late inning heroics. Let’s win one in the fourth tomorrow!
drewishdrewid - June 19, 2009
I'd go for that.
But these walkoffs are a heck of a lot of fun, you have to admit.
Al Yellon - June 19, 2009
Yes, when we win they always are!
But how about a good old-fashioned blowout for a change?
Is that too much to ask?
JFCubFan - June 19, 2009
Maybe tomorrow.
Tomo Ohka is pitching for Cleveland.
Al Yellon - June 19, 2009
well
I ended up watching the numbers go by on my phone, but yes.
What kind of Ruby Tuesday DOESN’T get CSN???
drewishdrewid - June 19, 2009
It's my new avatar on my Facebook page.
Kind of pathetic in a weird sort of way….

Nice Win
I’m especially proud of the pen. Still want Kerry and his 10 m a year contract? Maybe just maybe this is the jump start we need to run off a big streak.
cubsluver22 - June 19, 2009
Nice recap, Al.
I missed most of the game today as I was hauling files and boxes out of our flooded office today, but I saw the score on my BlackBerry occasionally. When it got to 7-0, I didn’t even turn on the radio on the way home.
I walked into my living room, turned on the TV, and sat down to watch Kerry Wood’s first pitch to Derrek Lee. I was stunned to see the score and shocked at the bat speed of Derrek Lee on that blast to left.
I am beginning to be impressed by this team. Slowly.
Goodie1969 - June 19, 2009
I think I got everything, but maybe I haven’t captured the way in which this Cubs team seems, at last, to have begun to carve out an identity for itself.
It’s starting to feel a little “Major League” to me. Because there’s only one thing left to do.
drewishdrewid - June 19, 2009
Our closer also wears dorky glasses.
Coincidence?
Goodie1969 - June 19, 2009
I can admit when I'm wrong.
Kevin Gregg, I’m sorry. You have won me over. You are MY closer because you put up two big stops today and yesterday.
cubswynn - June 19, 2009
I THINK NOT!
drewishdrewid - June 19, 2009
They look nice!
I had a pair just like ’em!

And besides
Seeing is the most important thing.
Clutch16 - June 20, 2009
Not really.
willie mays hayes' gloves - June 20, 2009
I don't think it's that important
Shanghai Badger - June 20, 2009
Win. The. Whole. F@%$in'. Thing.
Clutch16 - June 19, 2009
I'm still shocked
for this team to keep battling says a lot about them. Two close wins. Now we need to feed off of this and get some big wins
chitownhawkeye - June 19, 2009
Couple of Thughts
First, amazing win. Great job by the whole team.
Second, I have been highly critical of Soriano in the past. His effort in the 10th inning was outstanding. That was a situation where no one would have blamed him for trying to end it wih one swing, but he took the walk, stole second and that won us the game. Good teams manufacture runs in close games and Soriano did that today.
Third, Derrek Lee is really carrying the load for this team and that is good to see. He is hitting to all fields and his ten home runs all of a sudden does not seem so paltry.
Fourth, outstanding game for Andres Blanco with the bat, and especially making a real nice play in the 10th. He needs to start with Fox and Fontenot generally platooning at third.
Nice job by the pen. Like Al said, shaky at times but got the job done.
Ryanocm1 - June 19, 2009
On Blanco...
Him hitting even .270 would be just the type of unexpected gift that we need. Because otherwise, he can mop up the infield. I really like this guy, his defensive skills are about athletic talent that you can’t train – huge upside if he can avoid being a black hole in the lineup. The last couple of games have really caught my attention there.. we’ll see.
DisCUBbobulated - June 19, 2009
I would say Blanco's VOM (Value Over Miles)
is pretty high right now, especially if he continues to hit.
Bill Potter - June 19, 2009
My new favorite stat is going to be VOM
Madison Cub Fan - June 19, 2009
I have VOM
Chicago White Sux - June 19, 2009
We all do
chitownhawkeye - June 19, 2009
I'd like to see Blanco in the line up more often
The higher someones VOM’s goes, the better the Cubs are going to look.
Madison Cub Fan - June 20, 2009
During the rain delay
Comcast showed a replay of a game back in September ’08 where we came back and beat the Brewers after they had a pretty decent lead late in the game.
I sat there and thought long and hard about last season. I remembered this game in particular but I also remembered the swagger from last year. I hadn’t thought too hard about it until watching this replay. I remembered the feeling that no matter how far down the Cubs were – they could come back with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th for a victory. It was so exciting.
I realized how much I missed the feeling of last season. I’ll tell you though – the last two games have re-energized me. While neither game has been fantastic, they are once again showing that they will not give in.
There is hope yet for this season my fellow Cubs fans….
VicVega - June 19, 2009
Al...
ill-advised stolen base by Soriano? Why? Two outs and we need a guy in scoring position.
By the way, were you wearing a unbutton jersey? I was almost position that was you when I saw the DLee homer.
cubswynn - June 19, 2009
opps
I was almost positive…*
cubswynn - June 19, 2009
Yes, that was me.
Like I said, that was about the closest a HR ball has been to us in the 3 1/2 years in that section.
I thought it was ill-advised because Soriano still apparently has leg problems and I didn’t think he’d make it. Naturally, I’m very happy with the result.
Al Yellon - June 19, 2009
I just saw you in highlights on ESPNews.
Vermont Cubs Fan - June 19, 2009
Really?
I gotta go see that highlight!
Al Yellon - June 19, 2009
They just showed it again.
Was Jessica sitting to your right?
Vermont Cubs Fan - June 19, 2009
Al, were you able to see yourself in the highlight of Lee's home run?
Vermont Cubs Fan - June 19, 2009
Yes, I finally did see it.
I could see myself standing up, arms up, then leaning over to see if I could get it. Jessica was in the row below me, to my right, the ball bounced up to her row, but the guys in the row below that grabbed at it. There were three of them — she didn’t want to get hurt!
Al Yellon - June 20, 2009
Being happy goes without saying.
FWIW Len and Bob agreed it was the BEST Soriano has looked on the basepads since coming to Chicago. He had a huge jump.
cubswynn - June 19, 2009
I saw you on the replay
A few feet further up….
BigJohnAZ - June 19, 2009
Ha!
Called that one.
Clutch16 - June 19, 2009
Hey Clutch16,
Thanks for making my flag. I was out, and missed the win (I was working a very odd 11-7:30 shift anyway).
I should be able to make it in the future. We need something to sing after wins.
Vermont Cubs Fan - June 19, 2009
You're certainly welcome
We were missing a few regulars in the Game Threads, so I took a couple of liberties with the celebration posts. Glad nobody minded.
Clutch16 - June 19, 2009
If I had been working my regular 3-11:30 PM shift,
I likely would have been able to make it. Thanks again.
Vermont Cubs Fan - June 19, 2009
I hope Jessica will pop in here and tell the story about how she almost got the ball.
Al Yellon - June 19, 2009
Nice!
You did call it!
Vermont Cubs Fan - June 19, 2009
It happens again...
Yesterday, I left for my son’s baseball game with it tied at 5-5. Fortunately, I heard there that they won it.
Today, I decided to go out and mow the lawn when it was 7-1. Figured there was no way theyd come back on Cliff Lee. About an hour and a half later, I got online to check the final score. Lo and behold, I saw it was tied at 7-7 in the 10th and then they pulled it off in the bottom of the 10th.
Maybe the problem is I have been religiously following the team for 30 years and have broken my heart multiple times. Like the song says, “If you love someone, set them free.” Perhaps if I divert my interests, the Cubs will will win that elusive championship…
Nah!!!!!!!!!!! I want to be there when it happens, and maybe it will be sooner than we all think. GO CUBS GO!!!!
mondello58 - June 19, 2009
Al,
I was wondering if Lee’s home run off Wood ended up near you. It looked like it went right at your usual sitting spot in the bleachers. How far away from you did the ball end up?
Vermont Cubs Fan - June 19, 2009
As I said in the recap...
… only a couple rows down. Jessica got her hand on it, but got pushed away by several larger men.
Al Yellon - June 19, 2009
I've never had a ball come anywhere near me.
Vermont Cubs Fan - June 19, 2009
closest ball i ever got was rolling down the ramps in wrigley
how it got there ill never find out
jesus christos - June 19, 2009
I got to throw back a Kahlil Greene homer this year.
It was AWESOME. I don’t think I appreciate it now as much as I should.
cubswynn - June 19, 2009
Last year,
My 11 year old son caught a foul ball during the homerun derby in Albuquerque at the AAA all-star game. We were sitting along the Right Field line a few rows back. Amazingly he caught the ball even though the line drive took his glove off his hand!
srwilly - June 20, 2009
Took a foul ball from Doug Glanville off my chest
Off a hop, and I misplayed it badly. The lady in the row in front of me was happy about the souvenir, though. :/
Clutch16 - June 19, 2009
I could see you guys on the replay
Too bad you didn’t get it!
Itchy - June 19, 2009
I got off at 5 PM.
The Cubs offense was picking up, so I decided to walk home and listen to the 8th on my iPhone MLB at bat app. It took everything in my body not to freak out while walking down Michigan Ave haha. Great win.
cubswynn - June 19, 2009
I imagine it was loud
But what kind of ovation did Kerry get coming into the game?
On the replays of the game after the DLee blast you could see the look on Kerry’s face. It was as if “I never want be on the opposing side in Wrigley again” look.
ak123 - June 19, 2009
Not as loud as DeRosa's.
The situation dictated that, I think.
Al Yellon - June 19, 2009
He also used a little French there after Lee's homer.
It was weird to enjoy Kerry Wood failing. But I sure did, though.
Goodie1969 - June 19, 2009
Me too
Madison Cub Fan - June 19, 2009
Unbelievable!
I have to admit that I had lost faith about the 4th inning and stopped watching the Fox gamecast on my computer at work!
Maybe if I don’t pay rabid attention to them, they will win a few from now on!
CubFanSince1970 - June 19, 2009
Truthfully after last Fridays game that has been what I've done
I’m hoping this is the start of something!
Madison Cub Fan - June 19, 2009
rich harden has to get his act toghether
great win.. Felt bad doing it to Kerry but not too bad..
fischisgod - June 19, 2009
I didn't.
Not one bit. Kerry was a great Cub, but he doesn’t wear our colors anymore.
cubswynn - June 19, 2009
Couldn't agree more.
I wish him all the success in the world — except for this weekend.
Al Yellon - June 19, 2009
I’m his biggest fan or one of his biggest and I was glad to beat him (okay technically we beat Vizcaino). But when it was 7-0 I was thinking if he got in to get work my scenario of being able to see him in a non impact scenario would work.
It was louder for DeRosa but if Kerry had come in in a non critical situation it would have been louder and frankly it should have been. I loved DeRosa but he was here for 2 years not 11.
puckishcubsfan - June 20, 2009
well i obviously felt for him...
but was much more happy to have a win than a kerry save
fischisgod - June 19, 2009
glad to see d lee swinging the bat well again....
i think he said something about adjusting his swing awhile back.. good results so far..
fischisgod - June 19, 2009
I was just about to say...
…we all need to hit our knees and thank God for DLee. If it wasn’t for him, we could very well be sellers right now.
cubswynn - June 19, 2009
Exactly.
Which is why all the “demote D-Lee” talk earlier this year was way premature.
Incidentally, after all the DP’s last year — this year he has only two so far.
Al Yellon - June 19, 2009
Wait...
…weren’t you the one saying we should trade him for Matt Cain?! (kidding)
cubswynn - June 19, 2009
Hey, I'm happy to admit I was wrong.
D-Lee is carrying this team right now. Happy to have him.
Al Yellon - June 19, 2009
i would probably still deal him for cain
cain is rteally good and cheap
fischisgod - June 19, 2009
There's no way the Giants will deal Cain now.
He may be the NL starter in the All-Star Game.
Al Yellon - June 20, 2009
I think they do an should think about him as a building block too.
Also 1st baseman are a lot easier to find than pitchers like Matt Cain.
puckishcubsfan - June 20, 2009
Despite
Despite all the Hoffpauir love, they are both where they should be. Hoffpauir on the bench and filling in(and playing a better OF than I thought he would) and Lee playing everyday at first.
At least we haven’t seen the goofy stuff I saw on another site that Lee is producing because Hoffpauir is breathing down his neck.
puckishcubsfan - June 20, 2009
This morning on Waddle & Silvy
they were talking to Thom Brennaman about the White Sox and Cubs. Thom is riffing through the faults of the Cubs, and he says Derrek Lee’s just been invisible this season. Silvy tried to interject that he’s been much better lately, but Brennaman scoffed at the thought, and pointed to the RBIs and HR totals for Lee as unacceptable.
I have never been more happy not to live in Cincinnati.
Goodie1969 - June 19, 2009
Typical Thom Brennaman.
Not paying attention, and being pompous about it.
Al Yellon - June 19, 2009
Marty Brennaman is a bit of a red-arse (no pun intended),
but I respect him because he’s pretty honest. He doesn’t fail to fillet the Reds when it’s warranted.
Thom, on the other hand, a a pompous arse who sounds indignant about everything, including why there’s no Grey Poupon mustard at the concession stands. He hasn’t earned the slack his father has.
Not Bruce Froemming - June 19, 2009
If our pitchers pitched like our ex-pitchers did tonight,
They’d be calling for the trade of our pitchers and the return of our ex-pitchers.
DisCUBbobulated - June 19, 2009
Wood
I think KWood is still a Cub in his heart of hearts. Today was a gift from our old friend Woody…
HanelucaTC - June 19, 2009
that's not the kind of player he is.
He didn’t give up that run. Lee had to take it.
drewishdrewid - June 19, 2009
If you think Kerry Wood would groove one to an opponent then you haven't paid much attention to his career.
Acapulco Taco Pie - June 19, 2009
Wow
That comment was something called a joke. I know he wouldn’t blow the game on purpose.
HanelucaTC - June 20, 2009
Every time I get down this season I think of this great ad.
cubswynn - June 19, 2009

That’s twice in a row now that I’ve tried to post a link and it hasn’t worked. I can see it, weird.
Anyway it’s a Old Style ad that simply says, “Believe or leave.”
cubswynn - June 19, 2009
It's huge!
Scaled it down for ya. Hopefully, this works:

Clutch16 - June 19, 2009
That's what I'm talking about.
Thanks.
If I may ask, for future reference, how did you did you scale it down and then post it? Maybe the better question is, how do I upload an image straight from my hard drive?
cubswynn - June 19, 2009
you don't.
you have to host it online.
drewishdrewid - June 19, 2009
Hmm...
…I’ve tried linking facebook pictures before and had the same trouble. I need to just start a flickr account I guess…?
cubswynn - June 19, 2009
I don't think
Facebook pics are open the way flickr pics are.
drewishdrewid - June 19, 2009
Pretty quick process
Saved it to the hard drive and used the GIMP to knock it down to 640×480 @ 72dpi. Uploaded the smaller pic to Flickr, and posted a hotlink.
There’s no way to post pics directly from your PC to SBN that I know of, so a hosting service like Flickr or Photobucket is needed.
Clutch16 - June 19, 2009
Noted. Thanks.
cubswynn - June 19, 2009
Irfanview
Works for me.
And I use Photobucket, lol.
Azul Cachorro - June 20, 2009
I departed the thread somewhere in the 5th
Only to hear the call of Johnson’s homer – I hoped perhaps my departure would spur some luck. Maybe it worked, and if so, it’s a good thing, because I’ll miss tomorrow’s threads too – I’ll be at the game.
Helluva win.
Bill Potter - June 19, 2009
Did you switch your avatar?
cubswynn - June 19, 2009
yeah, I was trying to do something to shake things up.
2-0 since the switch.
Bill Potter - June 19, 2009
Two days in a row
Once again I was doing work in the field today and couldn’t have the game on, but for the second day in a row, as soon as I popped the video on my iPhone…. a DLee homer.
So the key is:
I can’t watch until we need a big home run. Then we get it. The end.
PacificCub - June 19, 2009
Nothing much has been said on Harden's velocity and location
He was barely hitting 90 on some pitches. He hung up a few ones there and only two were belted out. Should this be of concern? I supported the notion floated this week regarding trading him, and now I am more convinced. Trade Harden to Toronto, Texas or Los Angels of California. Get a third team involved. Try and get Minnesota to give up some talent somehow…
chilango2 - June 19, 2009
Harden obviously does better in cooler weather
Straight-up to Toronto for Holliday?
/s
Clutch16 - June 19, 2009
I even fail at sarcasm
*Halladay, obviously.
Clutch16 - June 19, 2009
i agree with this
if we can get something nice i am for it
fischisgod - June 19, 2009
Looking forward i think we need to go out and re-acquire derosa
he jsut fills so many needs.. What if aramis hurts his shoulder again. What if Bradley gets hurt. What if Fontenot doesnt pick it up.. I really like him. He is the insurance to every hole on this team..
fischisgod - June 19, 2009
Two more things.
I’m not sure there’s anyone who can say they’ve been in the Milton camp all year. But the guy is picking it up, hitting in 8 straight games.
Also a lot of people (BB for one) question Sori’s motives. His catch in the bullpen yesterday was impressive for ANY fielder.
Both guys care about winning, it’s time for us to lay off for a day or two.
cubswynn - June 19, 2009
Man.. I really hope MB hits like he's always hit the rest of the year...
Dlee is back, Soto is coming back, MB is coming back, Soriano will hit (I’m calling this one while it’s still kind of unpopular), Theriot never really left – and then A ram comes back. All in plenty of time for October, the only month that really matters to us anymore. The wildcards are Dome and Fontenot, but we’ve got some sticks behind them as well (RJ, Fox, Hoff). I would be shocked if the offense didn’t shoot right up to the top of the league in the second half – there’s not reason why they don’t.
DisCUBbobulated - June 19, 2009
Not to mention we have 3 (I think) make up games...
…AFTER Aram comes back. Here. Come. The. Cubs.
cubswynn - June 19, 2009
I’m not sure there’s anyone who can say they’ve been in the Milton camp all year.
/Waves hand
drewishdrewid - June 19, 2009
You never doubted the contract he was given?
cubswynn - June 19, 2009
nope.
drewishdrewid - June 19, 2009
Okay fine.
But going back to our earlier conversation today, here is Stone’s FIRST comment after Getz blows the grounder at second yesterday….
“That’s gotta be e-4, because it’s hit right at him.”
cubswynn - June 19, 2009
and then he went on about the trampoline, right?
drewishdrewid - June 19, 2009
Yep.
He was explaining how the field plays. That’s what a someone in his JOB is suppose to do and he gave an interesting anecdote. But when the first words out of his mouth is “that’s gotta be e-4,” give him a break.
cubswynn - June 19, 2009
hmmm
no, I don’t think I will. But that’s just my opinion, and carries no more weight than anyone else’s.
drewishdrewid - June 19, 2009
Oh c'mon. I know you're a die hard just like me,
but you can also be an objective fan. Your rant on that particular play was wrong. He didn’t go “on and on” about it. He called it like he saw it.
cubswynn - June 19, 2009
Moreover he goes onto to say..
“it was an omninous 8th. when it started out with a one hopper, not played by Chris Getz.” when they come back to commercial in the 9th.
He was NOT making excuses for him.
cubswynn - June 19, 2009
No one cares.
sue369 - June 19, 2009
Holy hell....are we still discussing/defending the White Sox broadcasters from YESTERDAY?
santoswoodenlegs - June 19, 2009
Sad isn't it?
sue369 - June 19, 2009
Just picking up a conversation that we had earlier this morning.
Sue you are usually one of those people that says “if you don’t like it, don’t respond”?
We aren’t getting nasty. Just having a discussion.
cubswynn - June 19, 2009
I think it's more
you have to be right. Let it go.
sue369 - June 19, 2009
Okay I should probably let it go, but since you decided to join in.
Since when does pointing out facts mean that I have to let it go? Drewish and I were having a convo earlier today and I said when I got home to watch the replay, I’d pick it up with references to what I was talking about.
I guess I’m not sure when him and I are having a convo that isn’t getting nasty, you feel like it’s your duty to stop it? Seems a like you are being too much of a “fan police.” That’s a honest question.
cubswynn - June 19, 2009
It got old yesterday
it’s over the top today.

Yesterday?
Okay now you’re the one continuing an discussion that wasn’t even yours. Drewish and I discussed this topic this morning.
Again, if you don’t want to participate please feel free to not respond.
Stop being fan post police in something that doesn’t involve you.
cubswynn - June 19, 2009
Whenever it was
it’s old. You post it on here it’s for everyone to read and participate if they choose.
sue369 - June 19, 2009
Ok Sue, now your jumping on him about it is getting old.
santoswoodenlegs - June 19, 2009
whatever
sue369 - June 19, 2009
It's old to you.
For the love of God, you tried to shut down an ongoing conversation between me and someone else, because you didn’t like it. Stop playing BCB god and just let it go.
cubswynn - June 19, 2009
Ya..
it is sad how you jump on him for no good reason.
cubs2k8isnxtyear - June 19, 2009
Ummmmmm
BrewCrew'sPrinceofDarkness - June 19, 2009
Celebrating a soccer victory?
Or rare color footage at West Side Park, circa 1908?
Clutch16 - June 19, 2009
I've been pretty consistent in my support...
for him as well. I think the closest I’ve come to criticism is to note that the fear of off-the-field stuff is a bit draining (ie i’m always worried something is going to blow up). But even with that, I’ve never regretted our signing him.
CubsWin!Oregon - June 19, 2009
My comments were never...
…he wasn’t a good player, but the amount of time he plays for what we are paying him for. If he goes on the DL one more time this year, I think it’s fair to question the signing.
cubswynn - June 19, 2009
that would be
twice, you realize, right? His second DL stint, should he go one it again “one more time” this year.
drewishdrewid - June 19, 2009
In all fairness
He sat on the bench for an extended period a month ago which probably would have been more productively spent on the 15-day DL.
Clutch16 - June 19, 2009
sure
but if we’re talking DL stints, Milton Bradley has only had one.
Lee, Rami and Milton have all had time where they just sat on the bench.
drewishdrewid - June 19, 2009
Yabbut most of us expect Milton to end up on the DL again.
cubswynn - June 19, 2009
Just as long as he's healthy for the playoffs.
Right?
santoswoodenlegs - June 19, 2009
Sure.
What’s your point?
cubswynn - June 19, 2009
We signed the AL leader in OBP to be the lefty bat with pop that solidifies our lineup....
the season is almost halfway over and I’m still waiting for Milton Bradley to be that guy. I guess we really did just get him for the playoffs, so I’m going to just expect .250/.350/.400 and 15 HR’s from him until the playoffs start.
santoswoodenlegs - June 19, 2009
he's been
doing better. Let’s see what the next two weeks bring.
drewishdrewid - June 19, 2009
yes...he's got a nice 8 game hitting streak going...
and hitting .392 over those 8 games, but only 2 Xtra basehits (doubles) and 3BB to 7Ks.
like I said, I’m just going to expect him to hit like a backup outfielder for the rest of the year.
santoswoodenlegs - June 19, 2009
Below I pointed out he's hit in 8 straight.
So I’m by no means a Milton hater. Just waiting this out a little longer. We’ve only played 64 games (I believe).
cubswynn - June 19, 2009
I don't.
drewishdrewid - June 19, 2009
You're much more optimistic than me my friend.
cubswynn - June 19, 2009
well
that’s ok. :D
drewishdrewid - June 20, 2009
Rolling eyes.
Drewish is NEVER wrong you know.
cubswynn - June 19, 2009
I'm wrong all the time.
Ask my wife.
But I’m not wrong about this. Milton Bradley has been on the DL once this year. So, you’d question his contract based on two DL stints. Ok.
drewishdrewid - June 19, 2009
When did I quote the number of times he's gone on the DL?
I’m not trying to pick a fight. But he’s already missed 17 games (how many of those played games were pinch hits?) and I’d be SHOCKED if he didn’t go on the DL one more time this year.
cubswynn - June 19, 2009
you said
Which makes it sounds like he’s been on and off the DL all year.
He’s missed 17 games? That’s one less game than Rami has PLAYED.
drewishdrewid - June 19, 2009
Sure but you're splitting hairs.
Without looking it up, how many of those games were one or two at bats?
I hope I’m wrong (like I was about Gregg), but would you really bet your next paycheck that Milton plays the rest of the season without going on the DL?
cubswynn - June 19, 2009
He's played in 50 games this year
and 9 of them were only 1 AB.
santoswoodenlegs - June 19, 2009
Okay tell me if my math is wrong
that means he’s really only played in 41 games. That has him playing at 64% of the games. Pro rated over a 162 game season, that comes out to 99 games. Hardly worth the $70,000 per game we’re paying him.
Again, I hope I’m wrong.
cubswynn - June 19, 2009
I'm telling you...
he’s only on the team to hit in the playoffs. That’s where he’ll “earn” his $. Or so Hendry hopes.
santoswoodenlegs - June 19, 2009
Maybe Hendry's gamble..
…on only preparing this team for a playoff run was right. Only time will tell. But first we have to make the playoffs I suppose.
cubswynn - June 19, 2009
your math is wrong
if he appears in a game, he’s played in it. You can’t change the goalposts.
Again. Rami has played in EIGHTEEN GAMES this year so far. What does that work out, $$$ to games based on his contract?
drewishdrewid - June 20, 2009
no
but I’ll bet you $20 to Project 3000 that he doesn’t.
drewishdrewid - June 20, 2009
Waving hand as well...
Jimmyeatworld - June 19, 2009
Poor Indians fans
The folks on LGT didn’t feel comfortable with a 7 run lead, and once Lee came out, they quickly moved on to despair.
For the blood-thirsty, reaction to Lee’s homer in the 9th starts here. (NSFW language)
Clutch16 - June 19, 2009
Ouch.
cubswynn - June 19, 2009
I feel for them, in a way
It must suck to have starting pitching like what Lee offered today and see it blow up. Worse yet to know that’s what would happen.
Not Bruce Froemming - June 19, 2009
We know how it feels
chitownhawkeye - June 19, 2009
Our 'pen seems to be coming around, though
We’ve got some quality guys out there who may have scuffled early, but are starting to show why they’re big-leaguers. The Indians’ bullpen just seems utterly hopeless.
Clutch16 - June 19, 2009
Absolutely
I was more thinking Howry
chitownhawkeye - June 19, 2009
I no longer enjoy baseball.
That’s like saying "I no longer enjoy cocaine." Well, duh, but nothing is going to change.
Wow.
drewishdrewid - June 19, 2009
That's crazy.
There were a lot of other NC-17 comments, but I really don’t understand why you’d say that on a blog. Unless you’re a cocaine user, I just don’t get it.
Vermont Cubs Fan - June 19, 2009
In Cinci
Paul Konerko just blasted a lead-off HR in the 9th off of Cordero to cut the Reds’ lead to 1. 4-3, no outs.
Clutch16 - June 19, 2009
Is it possible for both teams to lose?
If so, I want to hear Hawk doing commentary and Marty doing color. F them both.
cubswynn - June 19, 2009
No Hawk tonight
Family business. It’s been pretty nice listening to Stoney doing PbP again.
Clutch16 - June 19, 2009
Game over in Ohio
Reds 4, White Sox 3.
Clutch16 - June 19, 2009
St. Louis is currently destroying the Royals
And Detroit is mired in the never-ending rain delay while leading the Brewers 7-4 in the bottom of the fourth. Maybe they’ll finish it tomorrow.
Clutch16 - June 19, 2009
Or will they wipe it out and start over?
Itchy - June 19, 2009
I will have to watch those highlights
If they show Lee’s homer landing I must be in em. I NEVER go after a ball. I am really scared of guys trying to get them but it basically bounced just to the left of me on some empty seats. As soon as my hand got on, a really big guy had his hands on it and then another big guy so I just gave up and the really wrestled for it but seemed friendly after. Never touched a home run ball before that was not being passed around. It was cool.
I have to double check but this should make my record around 12-5. Not too shabby ( all but one at Wrigley). What can I say. I come in and the Cubs come back from the dead in back to back games.
Doggie Stalker - June 19, 2009
We were waiting for that story.
I’m 7-4 on the year (one away from Wrigley). Sorry you didn’t get the ball.
cubswynn - June 19, 2009
1-0 with a rain-out :)
Yet another extra-innings game, tho.
Clutch16 - June 19, 2009
You're there.
MLB.com highlight for ya. Slow-mo goodness around the 0:40 mark.
Clutch16 - June 19, 2009
Just barely
If you a figure diving for the ball with white shirt ( on the back the front was Cubs minor League system) and some curly brown hair but no one would recognize me, Now IF I had been wearing my Maddux Jersey ( which I am saving for Sunday) it would have been easy to know it was me even if you can never see my face.
Doggie Stalker - June 19, 2009
I'm surprised
you had your head up watching the game! :D
drewishdrewid - June 19, 2009
She didn't, at least not...
… when the Indians were batting.
Al Yellon - June 20, 2009
I had no paper to read either
Pretty much starred at the ground for the 9th & 10th when the Indians batted.
Doggie Stalker - June 20, 2009
I'm 0-2
Both times to the Reds, both times to Aaron Harang, both times Big Z starting off nicely then getting the loss.
At least Z got a 3 run homer in one of the games. :D
Azul Cachorro - June 20, 2009
We won?!
I just found out. The last time I checked the game was 7-2, so i thought, back to losing, went out to have dinner, came back, changed clothes, fired up the computer and… surprise! It’s good to win.
Fraggin Judge - June 19, 2009
I thought the same thing.
I checked in the fourth inning, saw the score was 6-0, Cleveland, and I thought we were wasting the momentum from our game against the White Sox.
The next time I checked, the game was tied 7-7 going into the tenth inning. Unreal!

"Oh my God"......Ron Santo on Lee's tying run.
That was fun listening to Ron. I think he said that 3 times. I didn’t get to see the end of the game but I’m going to record the ending on the replay at 2 am.
Dero actually hurt his thigh hitting it on the phone box in the bullpen.
I hope this team continues the winning attitude they have shown the last two games.
sue369 - June 19, 2009
Listening to the highlights on the radio..
… driving home is hilarious. Every time the Cubs hit a HR, Pat calls it excitedly, then Santo chimes in with, “All RIGHT! Oh my god! Yes!” It’s like they’re playing a tape of him. Sounds the same every time.
Al Yellon - June 20, 2009
What an exciting comeback!
As usual, I had to stay away from the game threads when the Cubs fell behind and listened online. Where are the naysayers now? They are like flies on a pile of dung. They swarm when the Cubs are doing crappy. Where are you, now, you krummy pieces of naysaying crap?
Never give up on the Cubs! Never….NEVER….NEVER!
Gotta love them CUBS! Thanks for two exciting games. And a special thanks to the BCB’ers who try to keep the game threads civil.
flachimesa - June 19, 2009
I've never said anything

And when I left my house when the Cubs were down 7-1.
Great to see the comeback to win in 10 innings on my blackberry during the dinner.
This division is up for grabs and as the last few years have proven, all it takes is to get into the playoffs on a hot streak.

Weekend to win
Safe to say we’re up against some of the worst pitching in the majors. Cubs should sweep this series. Kudos to the Cub bullpen.

We need to capitalize early tomorrow.

Jimmyeatworld - June 20, 2009
They're in good shape to sweep
but anything can happen. I figured the Cubs were a decent bet to lose today’s game simply because Lee was pitching.
Not Bruce Froemming - June 20, 2009

first game of the year for me I still don’t have a voice to this moment I don’t think i’ve ever left Wrigley happier, even got the foul ball that I thought for sure was on its way to giving the Indians the lead back, thanks to Soriano..

Is it just me
Is it just me or does the team seem just different than the one the Sox beat on Wednesday?
As I said before this reminds me of 2007.
And everyday brings us closer to the return of Ramirez.
puckishcubsfan - June 20, 2009
I DVR-ed the game...
as I was out sightseeing with my mom and brother. When we were at dinner, one of my friends (a Cards fan) texted me saying the Cubs came back from 7-0 down to win. On cue, it was time for BBTN to pop up at the restaurant.
They’re starting to show real heart!
Chris Dobbertean - June 20, 2009
I was there yesterday, and was happy I stuck it out
I’ll just start by saying I’m deathly afraid of storms. Being pelted with hail on the Kennedy Expy for the second time in two years still spooked me a bit, but man, getting to the park, seeing the rain clear out, and taking our seats was great because for the next 5 hours it was all sun shining down on my head (I got the nasty sunburn to prove it!).
I thought for a second that our whole experience was going to be ruined too…We were in the bleachers in center field, right next to the right field side of the shrubs. If it wasn’t the management people telling the guy in front of us to stop throwing his drink into the shrubs, then it was the drunks behind us who kept spilling their drinks, standing up, and acting like they haven’t been there before, or that they just discovered what cuss words are. Right as the game started, they were talking about how they were kicked out at the last game they went to. I guess 10(!!!) maitai’s will do that to you because the guy was nearly kicked out of this game too.
On to the game though, as after that first inning, I thought we would get a dominating performance. Reed had that stellar catch, Harden looked on, etc. Then the offense came up and looked flaccid as usual, but it’s Cliff Lee, what are you going to do? They could have looked at more pitches at least. Then there was the catch by Reed. This happened right in front of where we were sitting. He circles around to make the catch, and, I don’t know if he’d though he tried to make a routine catch look as good as his previous one, but he goes for the over the shoulder catch, and he fails miserably. He could have easily made the play.
David Patton…How about this guy? For all that’s been said, he looked good out there today bailing out water as best he could until the usual suspects and Blanco~! helped us out, which brings us to the 8th and 9th innings.
I looked to say hi Al, but I guess I’ll ask you here, how does this game compare to the one against the Brewers from last September? I know we were going crazy where we were when it was tied up. Despite the nervous pit in my stomach from the coming storm (Kept checking weather.com on my phone), that erased some of those nerves. Still, I kept thinking, “They have to finish this in the 9th, or we’re going to get hard by storms.” They didn’t, but they sure as hell finished things up in the 10th. With Soriano on base, I turned to my cousin who came with us, and said, “All season long they haven’t made plays, they haven’t manufactured runs, they need to do this here.” The guy in front of us goes, “He’s not going to steal though, he’s too slow for that here.” Right after he says that, Sori steals, and at that point we all knew the game was over. A weird bounce by the ball hit by Theriot, and then we’re all singing. This comeback felt great. Two comebacks in a row feels really great. This is starting to remind of the teams from the last half of 2007, and most of last year. Timely hitting, making plays, etc. Good on them. I hope they do it again today. What a game…It’s going to take me a few days to get my voice back.
Craig in South Bend - June 20, 2009
The Brewers game had more impact at the time...
… because it was in the pennant race.
This one may be remembered later (along with Thursday’s) as one that helped propel the Cubs on to a playoff run this year. But we don’t know that yet.
Al Yellon - June 20, 2009
True, true
Yeah, the game last year, had things gone well, should have been the game that sealed up the division, numbers wise. Despite that, that win made the thought that, yeah, this division is wrapped up, run through my head, and probably many others heads too. This too, was a great win, and you’re right, we don’t know the impact of that yet. At least we do know that the team does have a lot of heart, and doesn’t give up.
That’s something I don’t think has been brought up a lot. Despite the worst game of the season, in the last few weeks, this team has shown a lot of heart. They haven’t given up, they didn’t really have the offense to take some of those games, but they didn’t quit. They kept games close, they tried to fight, and maybe they were fighting too hard. It’s nice to see that, because it just shows that these games are important, they do want to win, and they’re not going to roll over.
Craig in South Bend - June 20, 2009
Again,
I hope this dispels the notion being floated around out there the last few weeks that these players lack “passion.” I don’t think that’s true now, and I never thought it was. Just because it’s not visible to you on its face doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.
I think people who say stuff like that are just projecting their own feelings.
Not Bruce Froemming - June 20, 2009
Quick question
Anyone know when there will be a replay of yesterday’s game? I’ve tried searching, but couldn’t find it. It would be nice to DVR it, and then watch it on a rainy day, which I’m sure we’ll have another of any day now.
Craig in South Bend - June 20, 2009
They replayed it this morning on CSN at 2:00.
Not sure if it will be on again but it might show up as a condensed version in rain delay theater later this year.
