If I'm Cleveland manager Eric Wedge, I tell Kerry Wood to get on a plane back to Cleveland tonight or tomorrow morning so I'm not even tempted to use him in tomorrow's game.
Wood wild-pitched in the winning run in yet another amazing Cubs comeback, this time resulting in a 6-5, 13-inning win over the Indians, the Cubs' third straight win in walkoff fashion (and fourth overall walkoff in this homestand).
Personally, I think Kerry Wood did a fine job for the Cubs last season and was doing at least a decent job for the Tribe up to now (except on the road, where he entered today's action with a 7.45 ERA). But, especially after yesterday's blown save, Wood had to be running his head through all kinds of scenarios and emotions on the mound and was absolutely not focused on the task at hand.
This all worked out fine for the Cubs, of course, and with Milwaukee's second straight loss to Detroit, 9-5, the Cubs are now even with the Brewers in the loss column (yes, that's important, because it's possible they will be ahead of them in the loss column by tomorrow, meaning fewer wins to make up).
Can someone explain to me why Cubs pitchers keep giving up homers to Luis Valbuena? The guy came into today's game hitting .204, and although he had a couple of years in double figures in homers in the minors, he doesn't seem the picture of "power hitter". All four of Valbuena's homers this year have been hit in Chicago -- three in this series, the other at the Cell vs. the White Sox.
Lou said in his postgame remarks that had the game gone to the 14th inning, Randy Wells, tomorrow's starter, would have been on the mound, leaving a question mark as to who would have started Sunday's game. Most likely, Sean Marshall, who faced only one hitter and threw only four pitches, would have been pressed into service.
The late and extra innings were a comedy of errors, mostly mental, some managerial -- seriously, why was Carlos Zambrano pinch-hitting instead of Jake Fox in the 11th? Yes, we all know Z can hit. But in reality, he's not a very good pinch-hitter; he's now 2-for-20 as a PH, both singles, with ten strikeouts. In that situation Z has one job (at least in his mind) -- hit the ball halfway to Milwaukee. He took a called third strike which was right down the middle. The Cubs also had a shot at winning the game with one out and a runner in scoring position in the 8th and 10th, but failed both times (Andres Blanco -- and then, Blanco gets a key hit in the 13th to drive in the tying run after Valbuena gave the Tribe the lead with his homer).
All this after Ted Lilly threw another capable six innings, though the longballs he gave up were uncharacteristic of his last few outings. It wasn't just the two homers; the two doubles leading off the game that gave Cleveland its first run were both hard-hit. I still worry about Carlos Marmol, who doesn't seem to have his command back, and though Aaron Heilman's line shows two scoreless innings, he walked the bases loaded in the 8th and threw only 27 strikes in 52 pitches.
Cub props today to: Derrek Lee, hitting his 4th homer in three games, and Kosuke Fukudome, who had four hits and a walk and scored the tying run in the 13th. And speaking of people trying too hard, Milton Bradley... well, he should have stopped at second in the first inning, because he was thrown out easily by Shin-Soo Choo (who is a very underrated player and a dangerous hitter).
What else can I say? This team goes from you thinking, "There they go blowing it again", to finding a way to win when behind in extra innings. They are, as I said yesterday, finding their identity and finding new heroes every day. You rarely see three walkoffs like that in a season, much less three days in a row. It was the Cubs' seventh extra-inning game this month, with nine games still to go in the month (record: 4-3).
Finally, a shout-out to the three guys from Toronto and environs, Cubs fans all, who made the trip in from Ontario for this game. Nice talking to you -- and man, did you ever pick a great game to see. Onward to, hopefully, a sweep tomorrow.

Win Streak!!!
Go Cubbies!!
cubsluver22 - June 20, 2009
This has gotta be one of the weirdest stretch of games
I have see the Cubbies involved in.
I blame the global cooling.
eswan9 - June 20, 2009
Errrrr...the weather.
eswan9 - June 20, 2009
It was gorgeous out today.
So the Cubs can win on stormy or sunny days both!
Al Yellon - June 20, 2009
Yeah you're right Al.
I was thinking of the weather here in SD. Mid 60’s and cloudy, with some drizzle/
eswan9 - June 20, 2009
Ugh.
That’s what we had for too long this spring.
Al Yellon - June 20, 2009
cruise on up to Alaska... we're beating the lower 48 hands down :-D
Emelie - June 20, 2009
what about blizzards?
jesus christos - June 20, 2009
Tied in the loss columnn.... just 2 games back...
With all the walk-offs… startin to feel like 2008 again:)
SackMan - June 20, 2009
True that.
But I’d like it if the Cubs won a game in something other than walkoff fashion.
Vermont Cubs Fan - June 20, 2009
Winning 10-0 tomorrow would be great.
But I’ll take another walkoff if that’s what it takes to win.
Al Yellon - June 20, 2009
you think the pen
could handle it? I’m not so sure.
drewishdrewid - June 20, 2009
Well...
… all the relievers pitched today, but Sean Marshall threw only four pitches. He should be available. Kevin Gregg threw 16 pitches and David Patton 13.
A CG from Randy Wells wouldn’t hurt.
Al Yellon - June 20, 2009
Gregg has pitched three days in a row
So I doubt you’ll see him tomorrow. Same for Guzman and Heilman. Marmol, probably not. Ditto Patton.
Maybe Marshall gets a three-inning save?
Not Bruce Froemming - June 20, 2009
That'd work for me.
Al Yellon - June 20, 2009
Lou may be forced into using Marshall as a real long man.
Bill Potter - June 20, 2009
Imagine that using him in a role he'd be good at :)
Madison Cub Fan - June 20, 2009
As they say, a win's a win!
Vermont Cubs Fan - June 20, 2009
Let's save those 10-0 Cubs' "victory" games for Detroit this week!
All three games please…
Zeke - June 21, 2009
Right
How about tomorrow we put together six or seven right out of the gate and coast a little for a change?
bluekoolaide - June 20, 2009
Coasting is what got us booted last year.
eswan9 - June 20, 2009
Great point
Maybe, in the long run, it’ll do us good to have to keep battling
bluekoolaide - June 20, 2009
Yeah, gotta stay focused.
This team hasn’t looked focused, but injuries may have caused that.
eswan9 - June 20, 2009
I'd take 173 walkoffs
every year
LT - June 20, 2009
+173
Al Yellon - June 20, 2009
+11 in Post Season!
Cub Fan Mike - June 20, 2009
that includes the post season. :D
162 games, 11 post season wins.
drewishdrewid - June 20, 2009
+173
Ooops, I guess I am so focused on the playoffs. +173 …and if not +11 in in the playoffs.
Fun games lately…I’m actually enjoying watching the games again!
Cub Fan Mike - June 20, 2009
Good job by the pen today for the most part...
I think it could easily be argued that Gregg is outpitching Kerry…And thats not jsut based on two days… Love big wins like this for confidence..
We have some tough pitching matchups the next couple of days.. Javy Vazquez, Edwin Jackson and porcello all in a row.. hope we dont see a hibernation.. We miss Verlander though
fischisgod - June 20, 2009
Dempster vs. Vazquez on Monday.
Good matchup.
Al Yellon - June 20, 2009
Every matchup is a good matchup with our rotation!
Just gotta keep the bats going.
SackMan - June 20, 2009
looking forward to seeing porcello
fischisgod - June 20, 2009
These last three games have been amazing...
Nice to see Miles and Blanco contributing today. Hopefully Fukudome could build off his nice day today and get back on track.
CubsBullsBears - June 20, 2009
I think that Miles will hit much better than he has..
just like i think Freel could be a very serviceable backup infielder. That said, Blanco’s glove is special, and he has a good upside – I hope he takes both of their spots by starting to hit around .270 or better. It would be a real gift to this team 3b – Aram/Font, SS – Blanco/Theriot, 2b – Theriot/Fontenot, 1b – DLee/Hoff RF – MB/Kosuke, CF – Kosuke/RJ, LF – Sori/Fox, C – Soto/Hill
DisCUBbobulated - June 20, 2009
You really think Miles will hit better?
I guess, but today’s was the first hit I can remember that actually helped the Cubs in a game situation.
Al Yellon - June 20, 2009
If you look at his career numbers...
This year is aberrantly bad – It just doesn’t make sense. Yes, I think if he has AB’s he’ll hit more, but I’m still rooting like hell for blanco to make it.
DisCUBbobulated - June 20, 2009
its the first hit i remember him making
jesus christos - June 20, 2009
I agree Blanco's glove is nice
but I do not ever see him hitting .270.
rlpete - June 21, 2009
In other news...
The Sox are mounting a comeback after falling behind 5-0 to Dusty’s boys-feels VERY strange to be rooting for the South Siders.
bluekoolaide - June 20, 2009
Yes, it is 5-5 now.
Last I saw, it was 5-0, Cincinnati.
Vermont Cubs Fan - June 20, 2009
There have been some weird plays in that game.
AJ threw one through Beckham’s legs and into right field on a double steal, both runners scored.
A hard-hit ball toward the right side glanced off the glove of Hernandez, off Konerko’s helmet, and right to Phillips for an easy double play.
On a hit to right field, I think it was Phillips, the runner rounded first too far, and Alexei Ramirez fired a rocket back to 1st to get him, and the ball hit the runner in the ass and bounced into right field.
And that was just the first couple of innings.
Goodie1969 - June 20, 2009
Correction
AJ threw it into left field. It was strange, I laughed instinctively, then I remembered I was rooting for them and I got a little pissed.
Goodie1969 - June 20, 2009
Great game for Dome today
hopefully he builds on this game and gets it going for the rest of the season.
nji232 - June 20, 2009
i hope so too
but color me skeptical
fischisgod - June 20, 2009
I'm not really a big fan of Dome because of his drop off's
But I’m hoping. Even if there is a good chance it was just a nice day.
nji232 - June 20, 2009
Supposedly...
… Von Joshua has been working with him on the helicopter swing and how to get rid of it. I think we already saw some results today. Hope this keeps up.
Al Yellon - June 20, 2009
if this is true
then maybe there WAS a real reason for Perry to go. Someone mentioned in the game threads that the Cubs look like they’re batting better in the past three or so days. Sori, Riot, Lee, Soto all going to the opposite field…
drewishdrewid - June 20, 2009
I'm still sticking to the theory is was a move to make a move. Shake things up.
That being said, they certainly have started hitting. Maybe more patient, definitely going the other way on the low/outside pitches – even gameboard did it today. If this continues I will happily admit I was wrong – I’m all for VJ helping this team return to form offensively. They are providing some fun games to watch!
BleedsbluinMI - June 20, 2009
and last night he almost got it out of the park
jesus christos - June 20, 2009
fukudome that is
jesus christos - June 20, 2009
That would make Joshua really valuable
But I think a bit of that might be the media pushing the cubs agenda. Hope I’m wrong.
nji232 - June 20, 2009
My two cents after being at the game (my first of the year)
It may sound like I am being Mr. Pessimist, but these are just genuine questions I had. What a great game! Cubs are gaining some serious monentum!
cubswgnrocks - June 20, 2009
He was using Marshall
as the LOOGY.
He came out to pitch to the lefty, didn’t get the lefty out, and left the game.
drewishdrewid - June 20, 2009
Which, to me, is a misuse of Marshall.
He’s the only guy in the bullpen who can really go 3-4 innings, so in most cases he should be saved for extras.
Al Yellon - June 20, 2009
but Waddell's on the DL, right?
so Marshall is the only lefty in the pen. Lou + only lefty in the pen = LOOGY.
drewishdrewid - June 20, 2009
That's how Lou sees it, but....
… that is, in my opinion, a misuse of Marshall’s abilities.
Didn’t work today, anyway, as the only man he faced got a hit.
Al Yellon - June 20, 2009
I agree with you
he’ll be available. But he may be the only pen pitcher who is. :D
drewishdrewid - June 20, 2009
Bring up Cotts!
(only kidding) ;)
JFCubFan - June 20, 2009
NO KIDDING
Doggie Stalker - June 20, 2009
Agreed. Marshall's too valuable to waste on a single batter...
Zeke - June 21, 2009
I noticed a lot of
empty seats in the late innings. How sad is that?
sue369 - June 20, 2009
It is, but in defense of those who left...
… it was a VERY long game. Some people do have other plans on a Saturday, or long drives home.
Those who left missed something special.
Al Yellon - June 21, 2009
4 hours and 40 minutes.
I’ve been to DHers that took less time…
Zeke - June 21, 2009
That is true
and I thought of that after I posted that comment.
sue369 - June 21, 2009
The pitch to Zambrano...
was most definitely not right down the middle. It caught the inside corner. It was a strike, yes, but let’s stick to the facts here.
kanderber - June 20, 2009
Saw the replay.
Looked right down the middle.
Al Yellon - June 20, 2009
We must've saw two different replays then.
Cause I saw a fastball that started slightly inside and tailed over the corner.
kanderber - June 20, 2009
Looked like a strike to me, anyway, too close to not swing.
Al Yellon - June 20, 2009
I agree with kanderber...
It was a good pitch. Was a 2 seam fastball that started in off the plate, and moved back over the corner. Given that he was seeing offspeed outside pitches prior, it makes sense that he had trouble pulling the trigger on it. Good hitters of course can handle it, but there’s something in the brain that makes that sort of sequence difficult to manage sometimes (at least from my experience, and from what I’ve heard from professionals. Brenley for example made note that he was expected that pitch).
CubsWin!Oregon - June 20, 2009
I'm confused...if the Indians have Mark DeRosa...how are we beating them?
santoswoodenlegs - June 20, 2009
hes injured duuuhh
jesus christos - June 20, 2009
He's played in both games.
santoswoodenlegs - June 20, 2009
Its an anomaly
Any team DeRosa is on should go 162-0
DTJchris - June 20, 2009
he didn't start today
drewishdrewid - June 20, 2009
because they also have Kerry Wood.
eswan9 - June 20, 2009
Mark DeRosa isn't this guy.
Goodie1969 - June 20, 2009
No matter what team's uni he is wearing
he makes sure the Cubs win. And he saves drowning children.
LT - June 20, 2009
Two things from other games today...
1. Dick Stockton genuinely thought he was in St. Louis today. I had the game on in the background after the end of the Cubs game. Going to commercial, he once said “we’ll be back in St. Louis” or something like that. Then at the end of the broadcast “for Eric Karros, I’m Dick Stockton, from St. Louis…” What an idiot!
2. What the hell are the White Sox wearing right now? Yikes. I think the shorts might’ve been preferable!
kanderber - June 20, 2009
I think they are throw back unis from the 60s.
This is the “Civil Rights Game” .
BleedsbluinMI - June 20, 2009
The Reds unis are from the 1960's.
The Sox uniforms are supposedly from the mid-1960’s, too, except they don’t really match anything shown here.
Al Yellon - June 20, 2009
They are the '64 road unis.
Acapulco Taco Pie - June 20, 2009
The "CHICAGO" didn't quite match the original.
Al Yellon - June 21, 2009
The 70s road uni's were better
I explained them to my wife – she thought having “White Sox” in the flourish that underlines the cursive “Chicago” was neat, and she was surprised that red used to be one of their trim colors. She only knows the current uni’s they wear.
CaliCub - June 21, 2009
Like Brent Musberger, Dick Stockton is WAYYYY past his time to retire
Zeke - June 21, 2009
seriously, why was Carlos Zambrano pinch-hitting instead of Jake Fox in the 11th?
Wasn’t he in LF at that point? Or was that later?
drewishdrewid - June 20, 2009
Fox didn't go into LF until after Z's AB.
Al Yellon - June 20, 2009
Fox never went into left field....
Johnson was in left field. If Kerry did not throw his wild pitch and/or fox did not come through, I was beginning to think that Miles was going to pitchj and Fox was going to play third…
TheRiot Police - June 21, 2009
I'm going to be nice and gently correct you.
Both the boxscore and my personal observation of Fox standing only about 100 feet from me in left field in the 13th inning, are proof that Fox did in fact go into left field. (Johnson left the game, double switched out when Patton came in.)
Al Yellon - June 21, 2009
Hmmm
How did I miss that…I guess I assumed he was pitch hitting for Patton.
TheRiot Police - June 21, 2009
8-5 Sox!
lexmarklover - June 20, 2009
Put Marmol on the plane with Wood
and stash some where for at least two days. Lou’s overuse of him is getting past the point of insanity. Just more proof he does not trust ANYONE beyond Marmol & Gregg. If that had been Marmol in with two on and one out , Lou would have left him in but of course he has to go first to Marshall for one whole batter ( per above Marshall is NOT a LOOGY, you want one bring back Cotts and see how that goes) then Marmol . I could have lived with a sacrifice but walking a guy with the bases loaded is just proof Marmol is not what he used to be and is far from lights out. We have a long stretch coming up without rest, other than Marshall we really have no one available tommorow because Lou only “trusts” players when he has no choice like extra innings and not when he should earlier in the game and he just does not think beyond the next batter. We were lucky and I will gladly take the win but using up 3 pitchers in the 7th was very bad managing.
Doggie Stalker - June 20, 2009
overuse?
Marmol has had LOTS of rest lately. This is not overuse. I still think it’s mental.
Lou used up 3 pitchers because they did not get the job done.
drewishdrewid - June 20, 2009
Rest ?
He leads the league in appearences and this was his third straight game. When exactly has he been resting. None of the 3 pitchers in the inning got the job done though Marshall got kind of bad break as that ball catcable but he is not a LOOGY as Lou seems to think anyway. The point is Lou HAS to let guys like Ascanio Guzman ( when fully healthy) get OUT of trouble. Right now
he throws in Marmol at assumes it will all work out.
Doggie Stalker - June 20, 2009
I am likin Guzman
and I think Lou is starting to as well. I would also like to see more from Ascanio. i trust them as much as Marmol right now.
Glacier - June 20, 2009
I have a different take on this...
At the time Lou put in Marshall, the cubs were winning 4-3 in the 7th. Marmol’s his normal 8th inning guy and Gregg’s the 9th. Guzman had a sore muscle and Lou wanted to give him a break. Ascanio didn’t do the job, so left in the pen are Heilman, Marshall, and Patton. In a tight game where you’re winning, you manage risk, and putting in a LHP against a lefty makes sense. In fact, the single was a blooper that would have been an out if hit most other places. So he brings in Marmol to face a righty with 1 out and the bases loaded. This is the exact type of situation Marmol needs to learn how to deal with.. not now.. but in October – and I would call his performance today a step forward – getting experience in a high-stress situation. I believe good bullpen management was exactly why the Cubs won today.
DisCUBbobulated - June 20, 2009
Until Marmol proves he has "it"
back, I don’t think he should be anywhere near an 8th inning.
He’s a mess.
Allie - June 20, 2009
That breaking ball for a called third strike that he got is "it"
So was the strikeout with the bases loaded to end the inning. I think it’s right to say he’s not where they want him to be right now, but to stop using a young pitcher with gigantic upside because he starts the season not getting his slider across would have me calling for Lou’s head.
DisCUBbobulated - June 20, 2009
Its not a "starts the season"
its a 63 game skid. He’s been off. And he’s not that young anymore, he’s pitched a LOT over the last 2 years.
If it were mental, he’d have worked through some of it. I think he’s hurt.
Allie - June 20, 2009
I think it's mechanical with his slider..
his pitches are moving too much, which is correctable, and not a bad problem to have. the movement on his pitches is why his stuff is so dirty in the first place. I thank the baseball gods every day that we have a guy like Marmol in our pen. If he’s hurt, that’s worth noting, and a valid concern – but I haven’t seen anything that suggests that (not that it’s not there, but I haven’t seen it).
DisCUBbobulated - June 20, 2009
It is not his slider that is the problem
it is his fastball. He can’t come close to throwing it for strikes most of the time and thus hitters are not biting on his wicked slider.
TheRiot Police - June 21, 2009
and I'm beginning to believe a mess for a few years now
Emelie - June 20, 2009
This is not a "mess for years"
Not by a long shot
DisCUBbobulated - June 20, 2009
it's the
1 BB per inning that worries me.
drewishdrewid - June 20, 2009
Managing risk is not going through 3 pitchers in the 7th
on an already overused bullpen. I have mentioned this endless times but I lost all faith in Lou last April when in a game IN
Philadelphia he used the ENTIRE bench in 9 innings of a TIE game. Just like today they won, mostly due to bad plays by the Phillies and a bad call by the ump but Lou totally mismanaged the game by not thinking more than one batter ahead. Right now the Cubs have been very lucky with the great work of the bullpen the last 3 days but these guys are on fumes and you have to take that into account before you do things like stick a guy in for one batter or pull the plug on a guy you need to build confidence in ( Ascanio).
Doggie Stalker - June 20, 2009
The Philly game defintiely sounds badly managed..
But todays game wasn’t tied, and I think that’s an important difference.
DisCUBbobulated - June 20, 2009
Actually neither was the Phillies game until
The last two innings. He had already blown through most of the bench while the Cubs did have a one run lead and it was
a ROAD game. You have to consider keeping pitchers and batters in reserve in close games at least FOR THE FIRST NINE INNINGS. Cubs won the game when they were forced to use Z to pinch hit as no position player was available and he hit an easy grounder but Phillies misplayed it and the Cubs won. Not something you can count on. There were no injured or unavailable players either.
Doggie Stalker - June 20, 2009
The first two games I miss completely all season
(I didn’t even see a box score for yesterday until about 3 minutes ago) And we win in jaw dropping ways.
I’m glad we won and I wish I’d seen them…
Allie - June 20, 2009
The Lee homer off Kerry Wood is the best.
Find it. View it. Rewind it.
Goodie1969 - June 20, 2009
Off to find the highlights for the last few days
Allie - June 20, 2009
Wow
What a bomb!
Awesome. Still, I’m not upset I missed it. I got to spend 24 whole hours with my best friend in the universe. The first time I’ve seen her in a year. :-)
But thanks for the reminder to go find the highlights.
Allie - June 20, 2009
Here's the problem.
Which highlights do you watch? Todays? Yesterdays? Thursdays? Or Thursdays with Hawk and Stone doing the commentary. I’d suggest the latter! :)
cubswynn - June 20, 2009
I just went with MLB.com's 3 min video clip
Allie - June 20, 2009
and don't forget to look quickly for the little white blob
who TRIES to get the ball but is quickly pushed away. That was me ( barely viewable and not my face) towards the end when they show the scramble for the ball.
Doggie Stalker - June 20, 2009
That's cool you got to spend some time with your friend.
The best part of life is sharing good times with people we love.
And I’d have to say Kerry Wood coughing up two save chances in a row against the Cubs is right up there, too. :-)
Goodie1969 - June 20, 2009
yeah
it was good times. :-)
Heres hoping for a repeat tomorrow… just so I can say I saw it too.
Allie - June 20, 2009
It's on CSN tomorrow.
sue369 - June 20, 2009
Surprised Hoffpauir didn't receive kudos........
Clutche - June 20, 2009
He got about 40,000 kudos earlier today.
Goodie1969 - June 20, 2009
I meant in the recap
Clutche - June 20, 2009
Surprised you didn't pay that fellow BCBer
for those jerseys
LT - June 20, 2009
Not your business........
Clutche - June 20, 2009
Good one
LT - June 20, 2009
So does Clutche have a Hoff jersey yet?
Madison Cub Fan - June 20, 2009
I do not want any more mentions of the jersey thing on this site.
It is a private dispute. Keep it there.
Al Yellon - June 21, 2009
Oh I thought it was just a joke.
I didn’t realize that it was a real life dispute.
Madison Cub Fan - June 21, 2009
Clutche you and I got lots grief for being Hoff supporters...
and now the peanut gallery goes quiet! I’ll speak for the both of us when I say it’s great when other are wrong :)
cubswynn - June 20, 2009
Just would like to see him get more credit here.............
He’s done a fine job this year. What puzzles me is the same Micah nay-sayer’s think Fox is our savior. Go figure.
Clutche - June 20, 2009
Oh my god I know.
I think Jake Fox will be fine. But I don’t understand how everyone thinks he’s the second coming, yet no one gave Hoff a chance.
cubswynn - June 20, 2009
I think he'll do well............
but Hoff deserved more credit than he received
Clutche - June 20, 2009
Absolutely.
I’ll give Al credit for saying he was wrong. Just like he did last year with Edmonds. He’s more often than not, right about what he says. However this is one when it’s sweet to say “I told you so!” Remember when we got called out on April Fools?
cubswynn - June 20, 2009
Yep, I give Al a lot of credit for that............
and how could I forget 4/1?
Clutche - June 20, 2009
wrong?
wrong about what? Hoffpauir’s role on this team is to be a big bat off the bench. He’s doing that.
It’s NOT his role to be a starter. He’s not doing that.
drewishdrewid - June 20, 2009
99% of the people on here didn't see a role for Hoff on this team.
(you can ask Al about this) from the beginning I said Hoff’s role is the new Dward.
cubswynn - June 20, 2009
I think the wrong refers to the lack of support Hoff receives..........
regardless of his role this year
Clutche - June 20, 2009
Yep.
And I continue to admit I was dead wrong about Gregg. It gives me so much pleasure to say that I was wrong.
cubswynn - June 20, 2009
And I admitted..........
I was wrong about Lee
Clutche - June 20, 2009
Really????
Madison Cub Fan - June 20, 2009
Yes, Really
Some of us………………
by Clutche on Jun 17, 2009 9:26 PM CDT on Danks For Next-To-Nothing: Sox Lefty Stymies Cubs, 4-1 on Bleed Cubbie Blue
…udome’s 2nd half slump last year was the real Dome etc., etc. I admit I was dead wrong about Lee because he appears to have more in the tank than I gave him credit for, and I’m happy for him…
Clutche - June 20, 2009
It's amnesty day here on BCB.
This would make for a great post. Admit your wrong doings and you will be forgiven.
cubswynn - June 20, 2009
You're asking...........
for the impossible
Clutche - June 20, 2009
Wow
Called me surprised but impressed :)
Madison Cub Fan - June 20, 2009
Hoff has done better PHing than I expected
Good to be wrong.
Allie - June 20, 2009
well said
Clutche - June 20, 2009
No biggie.
I’m telling you, amnesty day on BCB would be great.
cubswynn - June 20, 2009
Oh, I agree......
give it a try
Clutche - June 20, 2009
Hoffpauir has done a lot of things better than I expected.
I have to say when he steps to the plate, I expect success more often than I expect failure, which is big.
I’m not wrong about Miles, though. He stinks.
Goodie1969 - June 20, 2009
I agree, Miles was a mistake.......
I just wish Hendry would admit it
Clutche - June 20, 2009
Two things...
BIG BIG BIG props go out to Heilman and Guzman for going 4 innings and zero earned runs.
Also Andy White advancing to 3rd on the Aaron Miiles (who would had thought) flare to right field.
cubswynn - June 20, 2009
***flare to left
cubswynn - June 20, 2009
Cub bullpen vs Cleveland bullpen
Cubs win. They’ve been rapping off of the opposition’s bullpen for the 3rd game in a row. They got lucky against the White Sox. Cleveland’s bullpen is bad news.
The Cub bullpen is better without Cotts. Now the likes of Heilman or some other reliever can flirt with disaster and stand a chance of getting out of it.
Fukudome had a great game. Lee is hot. Andres Blanco is contributing nicely!
Soriano still needs to sit.
AboutTheCubs - June 20, 2009
Soriano needs to sit?
It looks like he’s starting to come around. Now would be a very bad time to sit him.
Goodie1969 - June 20, 2009
I agree, he appears to be more patient at the plate
oops
Clutche - June 20, 2009
Agree also
Haven’t seen too many swings at low & outside pitches in the dirt lately.
JFCubFan - June 20, 2009
Von Joshua thanks you for that comment
BigJohnAZ - June 21, 2009
I agree, he appears to be more patient at the plate
Clutche - June 20, 2009
In the last week, I've only been able to catch a couple innings of each game
I might have to keep doing that if they keep this up.
Madison Cub Fan - June 20, 2009
MCF
please stay away!
cubswynn - June 20, 2009
I think Woody
Is helping the Cubs more while he’s in an Indians uniform than a Cubs.
wrigleyrocker12 - June 20, 2009
hawk is still whining about the cubs win against the sox today
jesus christos - June 20, 2009
LOL
He should just be happy to have Cub fans cheering for them today.
Madison Cub Fan - June 20, 2009
yeah sox win 10-8
jesus christos - June 20, 2009
I love what Stoney said to him in that game.
Hawk was harrumphing on and on over the “missed third strike call” on Soriano, and Stoney says:
“Well, the umpire didn’t put a fastball right over the plate to Derrek Lee.” I lol’d.
Goodie1969 - June 20, 2009
I was defending Stone for his analysis on the Wrigley infield yesterday...
But the way he and Hawk went on and on about the Soriano ball was ridiculous. Hey your pitcher should be able to come back from ONE pitch. Suck it Hawk. And you too Stoney if you’re gonna be a homer for the southside. You’re better than that, don’t give in to the temptations of appeasing a fan base.
cubswynn - June 20, 2009
of course he is.
drewishdrewid - June 20, 2009
And Cubbie fans whinning about Hawk for days after the game.
… Why though were so many Cubbie fans watching and listening to the Sox broadcast of the Cubs/Sox game? The Sox broadcast was on Comcast so you choose to listen to the Sox broadcast over the Cubs WGN broadcast?
DrCrawdad - June 20, 2009
One of the three games was the Sox broadcast on WGN.
I think that’s what many people outside of Chicago saw that day.
Al Yellon - June 21, 2009
No, they're still bitching about...
… the Thursday game with Hawk & Stone that was broadcast on ComCast. The Thursday game had the call in question.
It was a strike, BTW.
DrCrawdad - June 21, 2009
The umpire said it was a ball
Shanghai Badger - June 21, 2009
Tell Bradley the ump said it was a strike.
DrCrawdad - June 21, 2009
well they had the replay on that night on Comcast
which a lot of us were watching. Which is where we heard Hawk and Stone
nji232 - June 21, 2009
Because CSN HD is superior to WGN HD.
I don’t know if it’s the transmission, the scaling, or the cameras themselves, but when I watch WGN HD there is a lot of near-field pixelation when out-of-focus objects move quickly on the screen. Comcast is free of these artifacts for the most part. Not to mention WGN seems to “push” their white levels which can be anoying in a day game where one team is wearing white uniforms. That answer your question?
Goodie1969 - June 21, 2009
whining?
that’s not whining. That’s referring to with relish and satisfaction.
You reap what you sow.
drewishdrewid - June 21, 2009
Get back to me ...
…when the Cubbies reap something of consequence.
DrCrawdad - June 21, 2009
SO SICK OF ...
his whining and attitude towards the Cubs . Can’t he retire and fish or go where old tired broadcasters go ???
cubs north - June 21, 2009
Good times at the old ballpark.
Picked a good one for my first trip to Wrigley this year. Just got back to Indianapolis.
Selfishly, I wanted to see Fox come through with the game-winning hit, and I was pretty sure his line drive foul right before the wild pitch would have done it. He looked pretty composed up at the plate, I’ll give him that much. Between him and Hoffpauir, the Cubs bench is looking pretty good right now in pinch-hitting situations.
Though he needs to work on his walk-off celebrations – he didn’t look like he knew how to act in that case, but hopefully he can work on that some more.
Bill Potter - June 20, 2009
fox is too much of a man to celebrate
jesus christos - June 20, 2009
Man, he got a cut on that foul ball
I heard it before registering where the bat was in his swing when he made contact. Let out my whoop as a sigh, instead.
Clutch16 - June 20, 2009
That foul ball was a rocket.
Fox can hit the ball really, really hard.
Al Yellon - June 21, 2009
Keep this winning streak going.
Three fantastic ball games. They never gave up and I will never give up my support for them. I love this team. :-)
sue369 - June 20, 2009
This game turned on the fact that the Hoff kicks butt
Here is visual proof:
BrewCrew'sPrinceofDarkness - June 20, 2009
1414 KB, Brew... that's excessive, as we've repeatedly pointed out
Emelie - June 21, 2009
plus, how's he going to get out?
take the freight elevator?
drewishdrewid - June 21, 2009
It's the end of this thread.
I figured it wasn’t going to slow down too many folks.
Also you can shrink my post and thus get rid of the image.
BrewCrew'sPrinceofDarkness - June 21, 2009
This was the most important series so far
I know that’s a bold and crazy statement since Indians are not doing well. However considering all the circumstances involving how Cubs have played this last month, had they lost these two, it would have been really bad.
So far the Cubs made a bold point. They beat DeRosa for the most part in both games. And as much as I hate saying it, they beat up Kerry Wood too. I love Wood and I think using a road ERA for him in Wrigley is ridiculous because this should be home for him. It’s weird.
Can you imagine the media had we lost both games. In typical Cubs fashion (and I know you all expected it to be this way too), DeRosa would have had atleast 2 HR’s and Wood would have closed the games 1-2-3 both days. I really think momentum from this series can help us until Aramis is back.
ak123 - June 21, 2009
I'd like to say that I turned on the game today
and the Cubs tied it up (like the last two games)… but not so much this time. As soon as I turned it on, Marmol walked in a run. 2 for 3 ain’t bad, especially when the Cubs go 3 for 3. :)
Happy Father’s Day, everyone!
PacificCub - June 21, 2009
oopsies
turned the game on YESTERDAY, not today… though I still haven’t slept since yesterday…
