I remember it being a surprise that he was exclusively hitting LH when he first came up, because he is a switch hitter. It appears that he’s stopped doing that.
Bc I know idiotic things like this will be said…I’m not calling you a name directly, but it must take a real tool to say something like this
he isn’t going to trot out there and save every single game every opportunity…he has been great lately, and pitched alot, four out of the last 5 games, right?
So take your incoherant, moronic behavior somewhere else and STOP RUINING THE BEST CUBS BLOG ON THE WWW!!!
but I still think this goes back to Lou’s inability to trust ANY pitcher not named Marmol or Gregg. On BOTH Saturday and Sunday Jose Ascanio had 2 on and one out and Lou pulled him , on Saturday he uses 3 pitchers in one inning and pretty much blows the whole bullpen on Sunday Gregg who SHOULD have had a day off is rushed in with a 4 run lead ( and two on). Not to mention Guzman got blown out and is on the DL. He has to let pitchers besides Marmol the chance to get themselves out of jam. We will never know what would have happened if for instance he had let Ascanio pitch to another batter on Saturday or Sunday but if you are going to get an effective bullpen you have to have some faith/trust in more than two pitchers.
I did not mean Gregg should not be pitching NOW, I meant that he would not have been needed on Sunday at least if Lou had properly managed the bullpen. I noted before the 9th began that Gregg had an issue last year going back to back games and here Lou used him 3 games in a row. We pretty much lost Guzman because of the bad BP management on Saturday. The ONLY way
Lou seems to “trust” Ascanio, Guzman etc is when he has NO choice because he has used up the pitchers he does " trust ".
on the other hand, every manager has their favorite relievers, and I still say that this is the situation where you use your closer. We lost Guzman because he has a strained arm.
We lost Guzman because a guy with an already sore arm
Had to pitch two innings because Lou used 3 pitchers in one inning including bringing Marshall for one batter and bringing in the already overused Marmol in the 7th inning because he didn’t trust Ascanio or Marshall in the 7th. Oh my bad Gregg was used FOUR games in a row not 3 as was Marmol.
and neither Marmol nor Gregg should have been used or needed on Sunday. With both the bullpen and the bench Lou tends not to think more than one batter ahead, hence blowing through 3 pitchers in the 7th inning of a one run game and after the lead is blown the bullpen has to go 6 more innings overtaxing the bullpen. The great comebacks obscured the fact that Lou made a ton of bad decisions with both the bullpen and bench and overusing the bullpen had a domino effect of A. Blowing out Guzman., using Gregg four days in row when last year he had problems going two games in row., letting Dempster stay in yesterday since the bullpen was close to unavailable.
Lou used in the 7th gave them the run and his lack of thinking beyond the next batter forced the rest of bullpen to be overused. Sunday the Cubs had a four run lead and one exhausted closer who had pitched 3 games in a row but as soon as Ascanio got in trouble he was pulled even before a tying run came to the plate. Again Lou just does NOT think ahead. Remember my favorite game last year. Want to explain how a manager can use
EVERY position player in a 9 inning ROAD game that goes into extra innings. Same thing.
Why wouldn’t you have him in in this situation? Or are you saying that he would’ve been more rested today had he not pitched so mcuh and therefore would’ve pitched better?
If the latter, I’m not really sure there’s any way to demonstrate that fatigue had anything to do with tonight. He looked good (even on the walk) and his velocity was fine. He just didn’t locate one pitch, and it mattered.
i've let this loss go after all the cubs are just 3.5 games back
not too bad right now. hopefully our 3B can come back pretty soon and theriot and fukudome are shipped out. I really get annoyed by both players. Who knows, maybe a team out there wants fukudome and that could free up some cash. tough loss but its early.
I think Rayburn’s ball just landed. Great pitch!!!
This game should not have even been close. We had so many opportunities that we deserved to lose.
There are a lot of fingers to point blame at for this one:
Kevin Gregg – obviously
Micah Hoffpauir – I’m serious. We had a chance to blow the game open twice earlier and in the first inning and he failed to deliver, striking out both times. His homerun probably gave Jim Leyland a stroke. He was no where close to hitting any of Zumaya’s 100+ MPH pitches (per the Tigers scoreboard) and then Zumaya threw him an 85 MPH pitch (per the Tigers scoreboard.) I looked at my friend as he was circling the bases and said “what an absolute gift.” Hoffpauir looked over matched in this game.
Kosuke – It’s like, here we go again.
While it would be easy to blame Gregg solely, the offense is killing this team. Edwin Jackson was easily beatable tonight but when our big bats came up, they were pathetic. In the first inning, base loaded nobody out, and they couldn’t get the ball out of the infield. Later on, first and second, nobody out, they died at first and second.
Ughh!!!! I am so disgusted right now. Oh well. Back down to Comerica again tomorrow. Is there such a thing as Cubs Fans Anonymous? Probably not. Once infected, its for life. I know I am.
I think you're talking about Micah's failure to fly out and score the man on third.
That was a let down, yes. I don’t know if you can get much more of a redemption than delivering on the supposed game-winning homer in the 8th off a guy throwing 100+. I thought Micah did EXACTLY what he should in that position—take a pitch he could hit and drive it. I don’t blame that guy for this game at all.
Guess I got here early
LETS GET SOME RUNS

Hilary Lee - June 23, 2009
I hate to sound like a broken record
but I still think this goes back to Lou’s inability to trust ANY pitcher not named Marmol or Gregg.
Doggie Stalker - June 23, 2009
oh, cmon
who was going to come out? Guzman is on the DL with Waddell. Marmol had already pitched. So you got Heilman, Hart, Patton, and maybe Ascanio.
THIS IS WHEN YOUR CLOSER PITCHES.
drewishdrewid - June 23, 2009
Sorry to confuse you
I did not mean Gregg should not be pitching NOW, I meant that he would not have been needed on Sunday at least if Lou had properly managed the bullpen.
Doggie Stalker - June 23, 2009
Maybe
on the other hand, every manager has their favorite relievers, and I still say that this is the situation where you use your closer. We lost Guzman because he has a strained arm.
drewishdrewid - June 23, 2009
We lost Guzman because a guy with an already sore arm
Had to pitch two innings because Lou used 3 pitchers in one inning including bringing Marshall for one batter and bringing in the already overused Marmol in the 7th inning because he didn’t trust Ascanio or Marshall in the 7th. Oh my bad Gregg was used FOUR games in a row not 3 as was Marmol.
Doggie Stalker - June 23, 2009
you realize
it was two or three extra inning games in a row, right? Those kinds of games tend to exhaust the bullpen, especially in the NL.
drewishdrewid - June 23, 2009
Saturday did not have to be an extra inning game
and neither Marmol nor Gregg should have been used or needed on Sunday.
Doggie Stalker - June 23, 2009
the other team
made it an extra inning game.
drewishdrewid - June 23, 2009
Yes but the THREE pitchers
Lou used in the 7th gave them the run and his lack of thinking beyond the next batter forced the rest of bullpen to be overused. Sunday the Cubs had a four run lead and one exhausted closer who had pitched 3 games in a row but as soon as Ascanio got in trouble he was pulled even before a tying run came to the plate. Again Lou just does NOT think ahead. Remember my favorite game last year. Want to explain how a manager can use
EVERY position player in a 9 inning ROAD game that goes into extra innings. Same thing.
Doggie Stalker - June 23, 2009
Gregg is our closer...
That happens.
CubsWin!Oregon - June 23, 2009
Frankly...
I’d have never gone into the season w/ Gregg as the closer….but I’m not the GM ….and am not on any fasttrack career to that possition.

lexmarklover - June 23, 2009
Just got home from the game
I think Rayburn’s ball just landed. Great pitch!!!
This game should not have even been close. We had so many opportunities that we deserved to lose.
There are a lot of fingers to point blame at for this one:
While it would be easy to blame Gregg solely, the offense is killing this team. Edwin Jackson was easily beatable tonight but when our big bats came up, they were pathetic. In the first inning, base loaded nobody out, and they couldn’t get the ball out of the infield. Later on, first and second, nobody out, they died at first and second.
Ughh!!!! I am so disgusted right now. Oh well. Back down to Comerica again tomorrow. Is there such a thing as Cubs Fans Anonymous? Probably not. Once infected, its for life. I know I am.
cubfred - June 23, 2009
You've heard of the 12 Step program ?
Cubs Fan Anonymous has the Hundred Years and Counting program. I am afraid you never graduate.
Doggie Stalker - June 23, 2009
I think you're talking about Micah's failure to fly out and score the man on third.
That was a let down, yes. I don’t know if you can get much more of a redemption than delivering on the supposed game-winning homer in the 8th off a guy throwing 100+. I thought Micah did EXACTLY what he should in that position—take a pitch he could hit and drive it. I don’t blame that guy for this game at all.
dtpollitt - June 23, 2009
