Guess I got here early

LETS GET SOME RUNS

Make this the game winning thread!!!!
Winning thread!
Let's go, Cubs.
Finally

A game on WGN now that I know where WGN is located on my tv…

twitter.com/lenandbob

In case you wanna tweet ’em

how does bradley only have 16 rbis

like wow

Hits behind Sori and Riot

Any other questions?

8 hits...

…in 33 ABs with RISP.

3 of 5 HRs with empty bases.

That won’t help the RBI count………….

your first post in 20 minutes
I'm working.

Posts are a luxury.

lol

its a shame you choose to be negative and continue to discuss bradley's struggles

sharing in the joy of hoff hitting that bomb would have been a much better use for you ‘luxury’

I did.

Heard about the HR after the post.

Most of my last few minutes on the thread were absorbed looking at Julianne Hough and Erin Andrews.

And all I did was answer a question.

They are distracting :)
Wow.

Andrews is a hot sports chick.

But Julianne is just…………..WOW!

She’s so young, though……I almost feel guilty (not really).

WOW!!!

104? No way

Freeeeeeeekin

INSANE

Zumaya hitting the century mark

Damn.

Lee

drive into left center for a single.

2 for 3 with a walk

On the night.

Would you rather...

get in the head with a 104 mph fastball or with a Mike Tyson puch?

Tyson now or Tyson in his prime?
Either or...
Prime tyson

I’ll take the fastball. Now tyson, still the fastball.

D HR Lee let's go!
lee is staying hot!
Come on Micah
micah will get a fastball this AB - look for a drive
I know its big, but Micah Needs some help!

Hoff

to the plate. 2-1.

Hough for Hoff

Great.

Now how am I supposed to ever scroll down and see what’s happening?

Click the Subject

To collapse the picture if it’s too distracting :D

Oh sure!

I’ll get to that right away…………………

Damn.

Forgot what I was supposed to do………….

2-2

on a late swing at a 98 mph fastball.

Micah trying to pull 98-104mph heater
AND DOES IT!!!!
he did it
THE CHANGE lol...ZUMAYA NOT SMART!
Pulled it right into the stands
GONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
HOMER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
DEEP RIGHT FIELD!

HOME RUN! MICAH HOFFPAUIR, 2 RUN HOME RUN! 4-3 CUBS!

Drew.........

you gotta like that one

Micah Hoffpauir

is MADE to be a DH. He’s fulfilling his role, and I’m perfectly happy about it.

Glad to here it
YEAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!

HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOFFFFFFFF

WHAM! A HOMAH!
wooohooo 4-3
Hoff comes through
U my boy hoff!!!!!!!!
wow...

i was just going to writehow Hoff is struggling. Great Great Job

Imagine that?
hee
I may be unduly negative at times

and I see that is somewhat of a consensus, but we all have our faults.

Great job by hoffpauer nothing else to say.

Zumaya doesn't throw hard enough
Wow!

Hoff couldn’t touch his fastball.
Incredible.

Woooo~

When you throw hard, ball goes a loooooooong way if it gets hit!

don't hassle the hoff!!!
Why toss a changeup when you throw 103?
eventually

someone’s gonna time you.

i bet that change up looked like a soft tossed softball
it was downright stupid to throw a changeup there

go breaking ball if you HAVE to, but I would stick to the heat.

forget about the slider, Ricky...

throw him the heater!

Brenley called it one of the stupidest pitches he's ever seen

Now he’s saying he’s astounded at that pitch.

No idea

But I am glad he did

I'm sure the thought was that he

wanted Hoff to be way out in front of it. It just wasn’t executed well.

Soto to the plate.

they’re still talking about the HR. 20 rows deep into the seats in right. So if Z doesn’t come back out, does he still get the win?

yeah, if they hold on, Z gets the win.
yep

and his actions in the dugout shows he knows it

He was the pitcher of record when the lead was taken

If the score holds, he gets the W.

strike three called

on Soto. Three outs. 4-3 Cubs!

showa powa lets go!
I assume it is Marmol time

I plan to go hide under the covers.

stole my plan

Y'all can snuggle
Hoffpauir?!? Are you kidding me?!?
Shut 'em down, boys!!!!
well

I guess I found one reason to like the DH. or at least, dislike it less.

cbssports says hielman and marshall are warming up no marmol apparently

Runs Scored Tonight

Cubs – 4, Rest of the NL central combined – 5

Three of those runs scored by the Brewers.

If only the Mets could come back….

And one by McGehee

we should get a little credit for that one too

Are they going to get a chance to?

Is that game underway again?

yeah its going again, bottom 5 cards 1 mets 0
I think Marmol will have some good command today
old Jewish proverb

From your lips to God’s ears

Ugh

Is Micah working the Cliff-style chin curtain?

Is this

an illustration of why Zumaya is NOT a closer?

i think he is not thier closer for the same reason marmol isn't ours

he has more value coming into those late inning jams and throwing methane

"Let's see if Marmol can throw strikes tonight."

He better be on a short leash.

1-1.

FILTHY SLIDERS!

Strike three! One out. Palonco to the plate.

Sit down Granderson

he didnt walk the leadoff man

progress

I guess Hill came in to catch
He did

Soto out for precautionary measures after an awkward swing, according to L&B

K

show the white castle picture

Ask and you shall receive, my friend.

Stop making

me hungry

what a sight

times 3

then hits the next guy
And he beans him
That's the Marmol I like to see

How bout 3 k’s this inning

Uh

Why is Hill in to catch? Something wrong with Soto? Did he and Marmol have a fight or something?

hurt his hand again on strike two

looked like he wasnt going to swing at all no matter what on strike three.

Polanco

HBP. Drilled in the left leg. At least it’s fewer pitches. o.0

Cabrera to the plate.

beams polanco

i take that statement back

Well shit

I don’t wanna face Fatty here

Full count to cabera
Come on Carlos
he comes the slide piece
Got the K!
Nice recovery by Marmol!!
Struck him out

Not quite the throw him out. Thames is dangerous here

Almost the throw strike em out throw em out.

Hill couldnt get the throw there

Blanco couldn't quite get the tag down

Or block the bag. Unlucky.

Sorry guys

somehow I got in the wrong thread.

Runner went, Cabrera struck out on the filthy slider, Polanco stole second.

uh-oh

whew. Pat! For pete’s sake! it went FOUL!

he does that a lot
MIN 5, MIL 3 with MIN having a shot of blowing it open
Bases loaded there, how many outs?
MIN 7, MIL 3 still two outs runners on 1st and 2nd
Neither pitcher will last long

Will throw about 70 or more pitches by the end of the 3rd

whoo almost fair

Almost way foul.

Just a long strike! :)

keep it away

wow…that was close

We were getting that pitch earlier, Blue!
STRIKE 3 INNING OVER!
Marmol just did his best Z impression
SICK SLIDER!!
SWING AND A MISS!

Marmol strikes out three in the inning! On to the ninth!

Marmol baby

strikes out the side

Struck out the side!!!!

On to the ninth! Let’s get some insurance runs!

Old school marmol
Something to build on for Marmol

I’d take about 5 more straight games of that

good to see by Marmol

he doesnt need to throw that many strikes as long as he can be close with his pitches.

the marmol of yore

Insurance runs?
Ill take one or two

Nothing too greedy

I'll take as many as we can get.
Dome

bunts for a hit back to the mound. Seay, the pitcher, makes the play. Dome not so hot today.

Fonty to the plate. One out.

Or this month.

Think it’s the heat that gets him?

don't know

he had that 4-5 game the other day. I don’t understand the inconsistency.

Sounds like he needs routine

And his personal hitting coach back.

he drove one to left his last ab that was robbed from being a double
Kosuke was out before we could blink
Kosuke is an enigma

at times, his control of the strike zone is uncanny. At others, he looks like he makes up his mind before seeing the pitch.

Len talking about Rami

Saying he should take BP later this week.

I heard

this weekend, at the Cell.

I *really* want his bat back

As long as Lee stays hot, having that threat bat behind him could be deadly for opposing teams’ ERAs.

I was hoping he already was.
I think

it’s early, actually. I was under the impression he wasn’t going to start swinging the bat till July.

all i know is Rami said he couldn't be happier with how he is feeling
That's terrific news

Hope he gets some of his timing back just as quickly.

fonty to the plate

2-0 texas in omaha…geaux tigers

i wonder what causes fukudome to hit like that when it becomes summer

I'm just hoping.....

for a Soriano July/August! Sometimes he can carry the offense by himself. Had a nice summer last year…..

Fonty

sends a soft line drive into right for a single.

lbr single to right

out of town scoreboard:

MIN 7 MIL 3 mid 3rd

STL 1 NYM 0 mid 6th

TOR 6 CIN 4 bottom 7th

and if you really care:

Chicago Cubs Ohio 5 PIT 0 mid 8th

Come on.....

….Mets!!!!!!!!!!!

Greene just hit into yet another DP for the Cards

Time for the Mets, powered by Dominos, to get some runs!

No one should ever be powered by Domino's

He typed with a mouthful of Lou Malnati’s…

+1

How does that place stay in business around here? It’s neither good nor cheap

Agreed.

But $5 large pizzas…………make a nice lunch!

It's a play on their silly arm patch.
Figured that one out

Eventually. Damned flu-like symptoms.

Pineiro has been lights out so far

and the Mets are seriously screwed with about half the starting players on the DL but there is always hope Vs the Cardinals

9 opening day players on the DL for the mets
Yeah, he's throwing another gem.

Mets having trouble getting out of the infield.

he's come back down to earth since his torrid april start at least
1 hit, 1 walk, 1K so far tonight.
is that famous ray's

or famous original ray’s???

Nice save

Little Miggy fan!

Is this Blanco's first RH AB of the MLB season?

I know he’s historically been a switch hitter, but he had been hitting exclusively lefty this year at the MLB level.

he bunts righty

and was batting righty the other day

Must have missed the other day...

I remember it being a surprise that he was exclusively hitting LH when he first came up, because he is a switch hitter. It appears that he’s stopped doing that.

he had surgery on his right arm so he just batted lefty

Bah!

Castillo CS for the Mets, powered by Dominos.

Blanco

batting. grounder to first. Throw to second, just in time. Blanco safe at first. Two outs.

Ugly throw to second

Santiago was almost pulled off the bag.

Love this quote

“If there’s anything to pick up against Seay he should have seen it by now”

Pitching Change

Lyon to face Sori.

i'm ready for a "you can't see me" glove wave
We're certainly due for one of those
Sori

Be iron against Lyon in Zion

Soriano

to the plate. Ball one.

Lyon, the Tiger

And the Baby Bears, oh my!

big swing

fouled back. 2-1

pops it up.

I saw it. No runs score. On to the bottom of the 9th!

well, let's close her down Gregg
C'mon Gregg!

BB, K, DP right here.

I could totally see him that time.
What kind of swing was that?!?!
weak

which is what Pat called it.

Shut 'em down, G!!!!

Gotta go….car radio time!

Brought some for everybody

P.S. We’re 5-0 in TUMS sponsored situations

Bring your "A" game Gregg.
Hopefully he didn't bring his gas can
no, no boys

there’s THREE G’s in gregg

theres also the G's in goggles
swing and a miss

2-2

outside

full count. I know this tune.

I like the Goggle Guy

but this will be his 4 appearance in 5 days and he had problems going two in a row last year.

Kelly

fouls a couple off. Still 3-2.

Kev seems a little amped.

Settle down bud.

Gameday's confused

Got Kelly up to bat in one box, but Inge in two others.

leadoff man walked

ruh roh

ball four

walked him. Ron’s not in the booth, but I imagine back at home, he just said “GOSH.”

well that pitch could have gone either way
YAAAAY!

Leadoff walks rule!

Brandon Inge

to the plate. strike one.

Ugh I hate Leadoff walks
looked good from here blue
Cubs relievers WAY out in front of the rest of the league in BB's
I'm almost afraid to ask the number
it's easier to get double plays that way :)

so whats the answer

Inge could walk off here

He has hit 2 bombs tonight.

Or GIDP...you know...so we can maybe win...sheesh.
I suppose he could

but he didn’t.

cmon

pop fly into shallow right. Blanco makes the catch. Runner holds, one out.

Pop up

Nice two more outs

notorious i.n.g.e popped up

Huge out

Inge is a tough hitter.

Strong Tower playing over the P.A.
Schumaker ground rule double

Ryan to third, 1 out for the Cards.
Duncan up. Pujols on deck. :(

Raeburn to bat

Larry out to the mound.

Former Brave Josh Anderson sits

Ryan Rayburn PHs

Why do the no name guys on other teams make me MORE nervous in these situations than the regulars?
Geoff Blum syndrome
I guess I know why now.
breaking ball misses

inside. 0-1

fly ball to deep left center

home run. Detroit wins.

(curse words)
That was not a good pitch. :(
Textbook hanging curve
Well

I guess Rayburn could also walk off.

Well, so much for a solid outing by Zambrano
Say it with me now

SSDD

SSDD?
Same s#!+

Different Day

Same stuff different day
watch out visiting dugout gatorade machine
Why don't you just put it

on a tee for him?

he always gives up homers in close games

never makes it interesting

And to make things worse:

Bases loaded for Pujols. 1 out. :(

same stuff different day for gregg :-(
And just when you thought we finally had some good luck....

There aren’t enough words to describe this one.

Don't go ragging on Gregg

He really has been used too much lately. I don’t think one day of rest was going to do it after the Indians series.

Go get 'em tomorrow.

Night all.

indeed

we stayed in it with them.

yep, plus we get Galaragga on thursday ;)
Damn... Gregg just blew it..

It’s actually pretty rare for him.. But this counts as a total “blew it”.

i think this team finds ways to lose
other than the 3 walkoff wins at home last week...I guess maybe...sorta.
Don't be rational.

Now’s not the time.

we've already exhausted all possibilities

we’re into reruns now, folks

I almost spite Kevin Gregg more than I spite Milton Bradley.
Oh the life of a closer

Your 15 good outings are forgotten by one bad.

Turtle from Entourage has been on my shit list the whole season.
His ratio last year...

Was9 BS tto 29 SVs……that about 1 bad for every 3 or 4 good….

Painful

How many ways are they going to find to lose.

no

gregg just blows…choke artist

I stay away from game threads this year

Bc I know idiotic things like this will be said…I’m not calling you a name directly, but it must take a real tool to say something like this

he isn’t going to trot out there and save every single game every opportunity…he has been great lately, and pitched alot, four out of the last 5 games, right?

So take your incoherant, moronic behavior somewhere else and STOP RUINING THE BEST CUBS BLOG ON THE WWW!!!

Rant over…

I don't even know what to say
I'm leaving for a week vacation in Orlando...

this isn’t the way I wanted it to start.

Get a hooker?
I was there last week

I hope you like HOT weather lol

i just dropped raburn on my team too

why god why?!?!

because he is terrible?
i bet you scream why did i fold 7, 2!!!!

when the flop rolls down 7, 2, 2

WALKS

Are the key to a championship ballclub – this I am sure of.

Can someone

who has a statisical mind/more free time than I look this up?

Cards scored two, then...

Thurston CS at 3rd, Pujols picked off at 1st. lol.

Oh well, 95 more games to play
Let's win em all!
No leadoff walk

and we’re still playing.
And what a freakin’ meatball that last pitch was.

Timely hits with runners in scoring position

And it doesn’t even matter.

Yea....

The Tigers had only 4 LOB

we only had

5, or 6.

Not sure

you can fault him that much for the walk—he battled and took a close pitch.

This

is going to happen sometimes when you have a mediocre pitcher as your closer.

Lots of teams have mediocre pitchers as their closer.
Yup, and they watch the playoffs on FOX.
we should have scored more runs
LOB

seems to be the theme this year.

Almost like

DP-Lee was last year’s theme

whos name do we attach it to

It's been a recurring problem for the last decade or so......

Just last years overwhelming hitting covered it it a lot better

well i was looking forward to W flags tonight but i guess it wasn't in the cards

on to tomorrow! night cubs fans

Argh....

That was a tough loss.

But all in all not a bad game (both in entertainment value and in terms of the Cubs performance.)

Was glad to see Sori hit the ball hard twice, even if they were lost in that pasture in center.

We’ll get ’em tomorrow.

i just wonder if this team is actually legit or mediocre
GREAT Question...
It just hurts more

When it’s this type of game… getting so down when Z gave up the Inge HR, but then excited on the Hoff HR, and then just ugh… just ugh

I hate to sound like a broken record

but I still think this goes back to Lou’s inability to trust ANY pitcher not named Marmol or Gregg. On BOTH Saturday and Sunday Jose Ascanio had 2 on and one out and Lou pulled him , on Saturday he uses 3 pitchers in one inning and pretty much blows the whole bullpen on Sunday Gregg who SHOULD have had a day off is rushed in with a 4 run lead ( and two on). Not to mention Guzman got blown out and is on the DL. He has to let pitchers besides Marmol the chance to get themselves out of jam. We will never know what would have happened if for instance he had let Ascanio pitch to another batter on Saturday or Sunday but if you are going to get an effective bullpen you have to have some faith/trust in more than two pitchers.

oh, cmon

who was going to come out? Guzman is on the DL with Waddell. Marmol had already pitched. So you got Heilman, Hart, Patton, and maybe Ascanio.

THIS IS WHEN YOUR CLOSER PITCHES.

Sorry to confuse you

I did not mean Gregg should not be pitching NOW, I meant that he would not have been needed on Sunday at least if Lou had properly managed the bullpen. I noted before the 9th began that Gregg had an issue last year going back to back games and here Lou used him 3 games in a row. We pretty much lost Guzman because of the bad BP management on Saturday. The ONLY way
Lou seems to “trust” Ascanio, Guzman etc is when he has NO choice because he has used up the pitchers he does " trust ".

Maybe

on the other hand, every manager has their favorite relievers, and I still say that this is the situation where you use your closer. We lost Guzman because he has a strained arm.

We lost Guzman because a guy with an already sore arm

Had to pitch two innings because Lou used 3 pitchers in one inning including bringing Marshall for one batter and bringing in the already overused Marmol in the 7th inning because he didn’t trust Ascanio or Marshall in the 7th. Oh my bad Gregg was used FOUR games in a row not 3 as was Marmol.

you realize

it was two or three extra inning games in a row, right? Those kinds of games tend to exhaust the bullpen, especially in the NL.

Saturday did not have to be an extra inning game

and neither Marmol nor Gregg should have been used or needed on Sunday. With both the bullpen and the bench Lou tends not to think more than one batter ahead, hence blowing through 3 pitchers in the 7th inning of a one run game and after the lead is blown the bullpen has to go 6 more innings overtaxing the bullpen. The great comebacks obscured the fact that Lou made a ton of bad decisions with both the bullpen and bench and overusing the bullpen had a domino effect of A. Blowing out Guzman., using Gregg four days in row when last year he had problems going two games in row., letting Dempster stay in yesterday since the bullpen was close to unavailable.

the other team

made it an extra inning game.

Yes but the THREE pitchers

Lou used in the 7th gave them the run and his lack of thinking beyond the next batter forced the rest of bullpen to be overused. Sunday the Cubs had a four run lead and one exhausted closer who had pitched 3 games in a row but as soon as Ascanio got in trouble he was pulled even before a tying run came to the plate. Again Lou just does NOT think ahead. Remember my favorite game last year. Want to explain how a manager can use
EVERY position player in a 9 inning ROAD game that goes into extra innings. Same thing.

Gregg is our closer...

Why wouldn’t you have him in in this situation? Or are you saying that he would’ve been more rested today had he not pitched so mcuh and therefore would’ve pitched better?

If the latter, I’m not really sure there’s any way to demonstrate that fatigue had anything to do with tonight. He looked good (even on the walk) and his velocity was fine. He just didn’t locate one pitch, and it mattered.

That happens.

Frankly...

I’d have never gone into the season w/ Gregg as the closer….but I’m not the GM ….and am not on any fasttrack career to that possition.

Cubs are hitting .248 with men on

and .226 with RISP. absolutely terrible

What are the Giants stats

in the same categories.

You mean the Wild-Card leading Giants?

:)

not a ccall out or anything...jusst curious
yeah i understand

.268 men on/ .245 RISP.

Do teams generally hit "worse"...i.e. lower average RISP?

Where are you getting the stats so quick….espn?

the teams i looked up followed that like the dodgers.

i couldn’t find it on espn so im going to the individual teams splits on baseball-reference. Like the dodgers: http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/split.cgi?t=b&team=LAD&year=2009

Better than

the .120 it was earlier in the season :/

we doubled it once...we can do it again!
top of the 9th 3-0 cards
It's the top of the 9th?

My stupid gamecast still has it in the 7th…hmmmm…

haha yes, top of the 9th just started
The worst part....

Is managing a win tonight put cubs at worst tied for fewest losses in the division….

come on mets....

its amazing how many people are on the mets dl

yeah 8 key players

amazing how they’ve stayed afloat

theyre lucky the phillies lost 6 straight

and fernando tatis is your cleanup hitter....
and the Cardinals keeping winning

while we are screwing the pooch.
Someone tell them we are supposed to win the division.

3.5 GB

of Cards

The dodgers remind me so much of last year's cubs :(

atleast we know how their postseason will end then

Losing to themselves?
How 'bout losing to the Cubs!

I’ll take a role reversal…for the Divisional Series anyway. :)

and then they beat the phillies and then they beat tampa awww yeah

i've let this loss go after all the cubs are just 3.5 games back

not too bad right now. hopefully our 3B can come back pretty soon and theriot and fukudome are shipped out. I really get annoyed by both players. Who knows, maybe a team out there wants fukudome and that could free up some cash. tough loss but its early.

Just got home from the game

I think Rayburn’s ball just landed. Great pitch!!!

This game should not have even been close. We had so many opportunities that we deserved to lose.

There are a lot of fingers to point blame at for this one:

  • Kevin Gregg – obviously
  • Micah Hoffpauir – I’m serious. We had a chance to blow the game open twice earlier and in the first inning and he failed to deliver, striking out both times. His homerun probably gave Jim Leyland a stroke. He was no where close to hitting any of Zumaya’s 100+ MPH pitches (per the Tigers scoreboard) and then Zumaya threw him an 85 MPH pitch (per the Tigers scoreboard.) I looked at my friend as he was circling the bases and said “what an absolute gift.” Hoffpauir looked over matched in this game.
  • Kosuke – It’s like, here we go again.

While it would be easy to blame Gregg solely, the offense is killing this team. Edwin Jackson was easily beatable tonight but when our big bats came up, they were pathetic. In the first inning, base loaded nobody out, and they couldn’t get the ball out of the infield. Later on, first and second, nobody out, they died at first and second.

Ughh!!!! I am so disgusted right now. Oh well. Back down to Comerica again tomorrow. Is there such a thing as Cubs Fans Anonymous? Probably not. Once infected, its for life. I know I am.

You've heard of the 12 Step program ?

Cubs Fan Anonymous has the Hundred Years and Counting program. I am afraid you never graduate.

I think you're talking about Micah's failure to fly out and score the man on third.

That was a let down, yes. I don’t know if you can get much more of a redemption than delivering on the supposed game-winning homer in the 8th off a guy throwing 100+. I thought Micah did EXACTLY what he should in that position—take a pitch he could hit and drive it. I don’t blame that guy for this game at all.

blame everyone else that couldnt produce with RISP
