Iowa Cubs
The Iowa Cubs zapped the New Orleans Zephyrs, 5-4 in ten innings.

Why did we re-call Freel instead of Taguchi to take Reed Johnson's roster spot?
Right now, our 4th and 5th OFs are Fox and Hoffpauir. We’ve got no defensive replacement.
SackMan - June 26, 2009
Good point, although
if it was just a defensive outfield replacement, I’d rather have Fuld.
Now that Fox has demonstrated (despite Iowa’s complete lack of vision in not prepping him at 3b) he is at least serviceable at 3b, I would always rather have Fox playing instead of Freel against a lefty. In fact, based on yesterday I think I’d rather have Fox instead of LBR on a regular basis.
BatCubFan - June 26, 2009
Fuld could've been an option too... but for 15 days, Taguchi gives you solid MLB experience.
I guess they didn’t want to add another name to the 40-man roster right now. We’re at 38, and Fuld and Freel are both on the 40-man.
SackMan - June 26, 2009
Sob
I don’t think Toguchi is bad but Fuld would be a better option as he has defense AND speed and he is a SMART baserunner who does walk a lot.
Doggie Stalker - June 26, 2009
Give it up, Jessica.
Sam Fuld has had his 15 minutes.
Al Yellon - June 26, 2009
Look if the Cubs can't use him then LET HIM GO.
I asked Flieta about him at the convention and he said basically he was one injury ( on the Cubs roster) away from being on the team, now we have that injury to an outfielder. Fuld could likely find a bench spot or at least an opportunity on another team if the Cubs don’t want him. Stashing for Sept is hardly fair to him or much use to the Cubs.

Fuld, Taguchi, Fox and Freel
None of those guys bring to the table what Freel does defensive wise in so many positions. When he gets it going, Freel has alot to offer offensive because of his speed which was starting to show in Extended and AAA. Its not even close if Freel is healthy. His major problem thru the years has been staying on the field, because he plays at such high intensity.

Of course Fleita
doesn’t decide who gets promoted to Chicago, although he does get to offer his opinion to Hendry.
If I had to choose between Fuld and Taguchi, I’d take Fuld. But Matt Camp is probably having a better season than both of them.
Josh Timmers - June 27, 2009
Freel was on rehab assignment
and had to be called up soon or released. Taguchi isn’t on the 40 Man.
Josh Timmers - June 27, 2009
Wouldn't matter if the Cubs wanted Taguchi.
The 40-man roster stands at 38 players. There’s room.

I thought Clevenger was a catcher
Or does he just float from position to position like Jake Fox?
nji232 - June 26, 2009
He is primarily a catcher
but to keep his bat in the lineup he generally plays 1B or DH when he is not catching.
Supposedly he is raw but improving as a backstop. He has only been doing it a few years since the cubs drafted him. Prior to that he played SS in JC.
CA Cub Fan - June 26, 2009
Ok thank
Hopefully he keeps improving at catcher so we can have a nice backup for Geo down the line.
nji232 - June 26, 2009
He played middle infield
for Boise too his first year in the Cubs system. I saw him play there.
You’re exactly right on why Clevenger is at first sometimes. Iowa has three catchers and they all need to play. But Clevenger is the real prospect, so they keep his bat in the lineup.
Josh Timmers - June 27, 2009
If Fukudome and Fuld both started the season in AAA, who do you think would put up better numbers?
Jerry Mumphrey - June 26, 2009
Over the whole season?
I would hope it wouldn’t be too close, but I have a feeling it would be. I’ll still take Fukudome, but not by much.
nji232 - June 26, 2009
Dome is a better fielder, I mean Fuld is very good but Dome is outstanding
Fuld has more speed and hits for contact but a lot less speed. Anyway I am not suggesting he replace Dome , just that he was the natural guy to replace Johnson when he went on the DL. Toguchi turns 40 on Thursday so I suppose this is another lets love a vet
move. They haven’t exactly turned out too well so far.

Sunday I-Cubs Game on FSN Southwest
You can look for the I-Cubs Sunday game against Round Rock on either FSN Southwest (carried on basic cable in TX, OK, AR, LA, and parts of NM) or FCS Central (carried on the digital sports tier of many cable systems nationwide). It will be the Astros Minor League Game of the Week. The game starts at 7:05 PM on Sunday.
memphiscub - June 26, 2009
Thanks for the note.
I believe FCS Central is on Comcast in Chicago. Will try to catch the game. Who is the likely starter? (Samardzija is going tonight.)
