about Marmol AND STOP USING HIM IN THE 8TH INNING ?? Seriously this is INSANE. Ok he did not walk anyone but he did not strike anyone out either and threw 26 pitches. At this point I would rather have David Patton in the 8th but of course we only see him once a week so probably not the best idea. Lou’s idea of managing is the same as Dusty’s just keep doing the SAME thing ( as in Neffi, Hawkins etc) to show you MUST be right when you said you trusted a player.
Just caught the first part of the Indians radio broadcast — right before the first pitch…
DeRo is not in the starting lineup tonight. Tom Hamilton said that no one will say anything about why he is not in the lineup (he is not injured), and he saw DeRo in the clubhouse making lots of phone calls while the rest of the team was out on the field stretching.
There has been no official announcement, and there probably won’t be one until the end of the game, but Hamilton feels that DeRo has been notified of a trade. Hamilton made no guess about what other team(s) may be involved.
It would make sense that Hendry would make more of an effort to get DeRo now, since he might be the guy to help Gameboard feel more welcome in the clubhouse. Of course the Reds, Cards, Brewers, Braves, Marlins, Yankees, etc. probably feel the same way.
I’m really enjoying this game. And it’s going unnoticed it feels like, but recently the Cubs have been scoring runs. No reason we can’t score some more…
I’d like to see where all the previous pennant winners ranked in terms of fielding percentage, or whatever the current (read: more accurate) measure of fielding prowess is. Obviously the teams that lead the league in errors won’t be up there, but I’m curious as to exactly how much fielding factors in – especially with respect to runs scored/runs allowed, team ERA, league OBP.
Are 2nd to last in baseball in offense, and dead last with RISP… yes, you do sacrifice defense to improve your offense if necessary. Of course you do that, come on.
In ST, Gameboard hit a HR against the Tribe and pointed at Wedge the entire way around the bases. I’m not sure why Gameboard can’t let go of the anger from 5 teams ago, but Gameboard isn’t welcome in Cleveland.
Just like a week ago when Lou put him in for a single batter ( who got a lucky hit) then pulled him for Marmol who gave up bases
loaded walk which lead to our entire bullpen being blown out and Guzman going on the DL. Lou absolutely can NOT manage the bullpen and does not think past one batter. We were in a TIE game at a visitors park which is a good time to conserve your pitchers but not Lou. I know how much I sound like a broken record but it is just mind boggling that he keeps doing the same stuff over and over and over and never learning from any of it. I honestly think Derek Lowe got it right when he said that Lou still had a hitter mentality and he neither understood nor trusted pitchers.
I just think it’s better to say “I don’t think it’s going to happen”. To say “It’s not happening” makes one sound omniscient…and stupid if by chance it does.
Neither BleedsBlueinMI or Clutche are being pompous
They could very well be right – DeRosa does not get traded back to the Cubs. I guess the hot weather has me a little peevish, and whenever I hear something “will never happen” it just pushes a button of mine.
D-ro was my favorite Cub the last couple years. I’m not against it, but it is getting old. It was a bad move, Hendry screwed up, but I really don’t think he is coming back.
he pitched better and Theirot should have knocked that ball down I thought.
That being said, Marmol’s inability to locate remains a problem. You have Alexi 0-2 you got to try to get a swing outside the zone. Marmol did not locate well.
I said it would be nice to take 2-3. But we did let one slip away. I certainly did not mean that BECAUSE we let one slip away, we are going to lose tomorrow.
Too many games have gotten away, I dont think anyone can dispute that.
Three games in a row on the last homestand … two victories over the Cardinals in April … blowing the lead against the Astros, then coming back to win that … just off the top of my head.
And if some of you weren’t constantly dicks, I wouldn’t have to respond in kind.
He didn’t say anything remotely near that. You just come here, seemingly daily, and make stupid posts like that to start an argument. It’s so freaking bizarre!
A fisted bloop hit over Freel’s head and a seeing eye single? He had good stuff today. The only well struck ball against him was that long out from Dye.
But he still didnt make the pitches he need to. You cant claim that the pitch to Alexi with an 0-2 count was a good hit. It was a strike, which is not what you need there.
but he also did not make good pitches to Beckham (an easy strikeout victim down in the count) and Alexi 0-2. I would say it was a “better” outing for Marmol, but when you blow the lead, you cant have a vry good outing.
To an extent there is some regression to the mean. Last year was almost certainly a career year, but he has good enough stuff to win plenty of games. Needs to throw strikes early in the count.
Let's score LOTS of runs
We will need them.

He leaped but he didn’t need to. I think he thought he was at the wall, when in reality he was about two feet from it. Should’ve been routine.
kanderber - June 27, 2009
yes he did need to leap
are you even watching this game?

Are YOU watching the game? He both leaped and landed before the wall. What are you talking about?
kanderber - June 27, 2009
Cause the ball was going over his head????
heine41 - June 27, 2009
Again, what are you talking about?
He thought he was at the wall so he leaped. It’s pretty simple.
kanderber - June 27, 2009
you are telling me what Fukudome was thinking?
He leapt in full stride five feet in front of the wall
heine41 - June 27, 2009
Who cares.
He made a semi-athletic, semi-awkward catch on a line drive to the wall to save us a couple of runs.
Good job, no matter how circus it was.

When will Lou admit he was wrong
about Marmol AND STOP USING HIM IN THE 8TH INNING ?? Seriously this is INSANE. Ok he did not walk anyone but he did not strike anyone out either and threw 26 pitches. At this point I would rather have David Patton in the 8th but of course we only see him once a week so probably not the best idea. Lou’s idea of managing is the same as Dusty’s just keep doing the SAME thing ( as in Neffi, Hawkins etc) to show you MUST be right when you said you trusted a player.

OT: Update on DeRo
Stay tuned…

Me too.
I’d be ecstatic if we somehow traded Milton for DeRo. Of course, that’s not likely at all.
kanderber - June 27, 2009
we don't need a right-fielder
we need infield support.
drewishdrewid - June 27, 2009
Um...
DeRosa is an infielder.
Hoff/Fox platoon in RF.
kanderber - June 27, 2009
that would be
bad. We need Bradley, and no one’s going to trade for him anyway.
drewishdrewid - June 27, 2009
You'd rather have...
Bradley instead of DeRosa?
Seriously??
kanderber - June 27, 2009
no
but I don’t want a Hoffpauir/Fox platoon in right. I want DeRosa AND Bradley.
drewishdrewid - June 27, 2009
Hoff/Fox would outperform...
Bradley by a sizable margin. Defense would take a hit, but we need offense. Badly.
kanderber - June 27, 2009
I don't
agree with that at all. You’re speculating. Bradley, for example, got on base two more times then Fox did.
drewishdrewid - June 27, 2009
LOL...
Your argument is because Bradley got on base more in ONE GAME?! LOL.
kanderber - June 27, 2009
Fox hasn't proven anything yet
As much as I like him.
Pre - June 27, 2009
Sure...
So if the Hoff/Fox platoon doesn’t work, but DeRo in RF. He’s a pretty sure bet to continue to outperform Milton.
kanderber - June 27, 2009
and if you do that
then you lose whatever infield insurance you gained by getting DeRosa in the first place.
That’s why you keep both.
drewishdrewid - June 27, 2009
You don't get DeRosa...
To get infield insurance. You get him to hit. Regardless of it’s as a RF, 3B, etc.
kanderber - June 27, 2009
you get DeRosa
to make the team better. It doesn’t make the team better to make Right Field — at Wrigley, no less — weaker.
drewishdrewid - June 27, 2009
Again...
DeRosa is an upgrade over Bradley. It’s that simple. I don’t see how you don’t agree with that.
kanderber - June 27, 2009
Because
once again, we’re not (hypothetically) getting DeRosa to play outfield.
drewishdrewid - June 27, 2009
Can you possibly look at the big picture here...
Are you capable of that?
kanderber - June 27, 2009
funny
I’d say the same thing about you.
drewishdrewid - June 27, 2009
Defensive Metrics
I’d like to see where all the previous pennant winners ranked in terms of fielding percentage, or whatever the current (read: more accurate) measure of fielding prowess is. Obviously the teams that lead the league in errors won’t be up there, but I’m curious as to exactly how much fielding factors in – especially with respect to runs scored/runs allowed, team ERA, league OBP.
CaliCub - June 27, 2009
my argument
is that Fox and Hoff are both pretty much unproven, and Bradley is not a .230 hitter.
Sacrificing defense for possible offense is not the way to contend.
Besides, this is my dream, and if I want DeRo AND Bradley, I can have them. :P
drewishdrewid - June 27, 2009
When the Cubs...
Are 2nd to last in baseball in offense, and dead last with RISP… yes, you do sacrifice defense to improve your offense if necessary. Of course you do that, come on.
kanderber - June 27, 2009
no
you don’t. Not when you’re 4 games back and in third place.
drewishdrewid - June 27, 2009
Right...
You continue to fail on offense. Got it.
kanderber - June 27, 2009
no
you get DeRosa and KEEP Bradley. IE, make the team better.
drewishdrewid - June 27, 2009
And how do you get DeRosa then...
kanderber - June 27, 2009
I don't know
but why the hell would Cleveland take Bradley???
drewishdrewid - June 27, 2009
They probably wouldn't...
without the Cubs eating a good chunk of that contract. It’s obviously all hypothetical.
kanderber - June 27, 2009
well, if that happens
there’s no money for DeRosa anyway. Any move of Bradley would be a salary dump, and we’ll get nothing big back.
drewishdrewid - June 27, 2009
I'd be completely fine with that.
kanderber - June 27, 2009

Look, we are all pissy with Bradley right now. But be real.
AndrewJStone - June 27, 2009

Not Bruce Froemming - June 27, 2009
And 10 times out of 10...
You’d have the lessor team.
kanderber - June 27, 2009
That's "lesser"
and I don’t think so.
Not Bruce Froemming - June 27, 2009
Spelling corrections...
Nice.
You’re still wrong. It’s pretty simple. Bradley: 91 OPS+. DeRosa: 105 OPS+
kanderber - June 27, 2009
mind closed perhaps, not the case
WanderingWanderer - June 27, 2009
Eric Wedge and Gameboard are mortal enemies.
In ST, Gameboard hit a HR against the Tribe and pointed at Wedge the entire way around the bases. I’m not sure why Gameboard can’t let go of the anger from 5 teams ago, but Gameboard isn’t welcome in Cleveland.

CUBSfaninYANKEEcountry - June 27, 2009
Why the hell did Marshall come out?
For Ascanio?!
gizmo6d9 - June 27, 2009
Because he is a lefty
He is not allowed to face to many righty’s. Lou’s by the book managing..
Doggie Stalker - June 27, 2009
I just don't get it.
He is a former starter who had to get all batters out and I believe he had pretty good numbers overall. Why is he our designated LOOGY.
I understand using him in LOOGY situations but he can be left in if needed.
gizmo6d9 - June 27, 2009
another question would be why did Marmol pitch at all
this was another in a long line of poorly managed games by Lou
WanderingWanderer - June 27, 2009
Sorry not in Lou's book
Doggie Stalker - June 27, 2009
Two suggestions for Lou
1) If a reliever is getting guys out, leave him in!
2) If a guy is struggling with control, take him out!
Now cover your ears because I’m going to yell…
I FREAKIN’ HATE THE LEFTY-RIGHTY MATCHUP OBSESSION THAT MANAGERS HAVE!!!!
CaliCub - June 27, 2009

BleedsbluinMI - June 27, 2009
Neither BleedsBlueinMI or Clutche are being pompous
They could very well be right – DeRosa does not get traded back to the Cubs. I guess the hot weather has me a little peevish, and whenever I hear something “will never happen” it just pushes a button of mine.
CaliCub - June 27, 2009
You are right.
D-ro was my favorite Cub the last couple years. I’m not against it, but it is getting old. It was a bad move, Hendry screwed up, but I really don’t think he is coming back.

cubswynn - June 27, 2009
Another frustrating loss
We lost that game in the 8th when Marmol couldnt get the job done…again. This is an all to familiar scene for this club.
Be nice to take 2-3 but we just let another one slip away.
Ryanocm1 - June 27, 2009
for once its not completely marmols fault
jesus christos - June 27, 2009
I agree
he pitched better and Theirot should have knocked that ball down I thought.
That being said, Marmol’s inability to locate remains a problem. You have Alexi 0-2 you got to try to get a swing outside the zone. Marmol did not locate well.
Ryanocm1 - June 27, 2009
So I guess
the Cubs have no hope tomorrow?
Not Bruce Froemming - June 27, 2009
Huh
I said it would be nice to take 2-3. But we did let one slip away. I certainly did not mean that BECAUSE we let one slip away, we are going to lose tomorrow.
Too many games have gotten away, I dont think anyone can dispute that.
Ryanocm1 - June 27, 2009
Bruce can, and will
WanderingWanderer - June 27, 2009

Reddevil - June 27, 2009
It's not a ridiculous argument
It’s the truth. They’ve had a lot of games that could have gone either way this season.
Not Bruce Froemming - June 27, 2009
I disagree
but as Reddevil said, its not provable.
Ryanocm1 - June 27, 2009
Well, let's see ....
Three games in a row on the last homestand … two victories over the Cardinals in April … blowing the lead against the Astros, then coming back to win that … just off the top of my head.

A fisted bloop hit over Freel’s head and a seeing eye single? He had good stuff today. The only well struck ball against him was that long out from Dye.
louslovechild - June 27, 2009
I agree to an extent
But he still didnt make the pitches he need to. You cant claim that the pitch to Alexi with an 0-2 count was a good hit. It was a strike, which is not what you need there.
Ryanocm1 - June 27, 2009

CubFanInCanberra (9387milesfromWrigley) - June 27, 2009

paulucla - June 27, 2009
Trading walks for hits is worse
I guess it’s a start.
Ace Venom - June 27, 2009
He threw more strikes today
but he also did not make good pitches to Beckham (an easy strikeout victim down in the count) and Alexi 0-2. I would say it was a “better” outing for Marmol, but when you blow the lead, you cant have a vry good outing.
Ryanocm1 - June 27, 2009
Bloop hits not really pitchers fault
nor are seeing eye ground balls.
paulucla - June 27, 2009

jesus christos - June 27, 2009

Maybe he should miss a start or two
Pre - June 27, 2009
