I moved to CO about a year ago, and, though it pains me to say this, I’m starting to look forward to their games. They actually provide some relief after this bullshit.
Someone explain to me how that is a horribly wrong conclusion. Cubs are not a good ballclub in 2009. Simple as that. In fact, the chances are decent that Pittsburgh will finish the season ahead of the Cubs.
team plays like it did last year, Lou can be evasive about the Soriano in the Leadoff question. But you’re right – this team blows, and it isn’t helping that our leadoff hitter has an OBP below .300. Lou should have to answer for that.
With any other manager, people would question whether he belongs in baseball at all.
I dont care how bad Soriano hits anywhere else in the lineup..he should not be hitting leadoff..put him at 6 and let him cry the rest of the season..it will do good for the team..but Lou cares nothing about that..WOW
he’s stuck in a rut with a lineup Hendry built at his demand and there is next to nothing he can do about it. They’re not going to bench Suckiano, no matter what.
would move a guy hitting that crappy down in the lineup. I think Fonzie has pix of Lou with a goat or something. It is the only reason I can think of for his continued leading off.
I am tired of waiting for other teams to lose so that I can at least enjoy the rest of my evening. If all of you hated 4th place, 5th is knocking on the door. If this score holds up and Houston wins, we become the next to last team in this division.
and I am really glad that I am not going to watch Cubs baseball (Is that what they are playing?) during this time. I am just happy that I am getting away from this stink. This is beyond ridiculous and someone has to be held accountable.
Take 3-4 games off…look at the box in the morning if you must…but don’t watch the games. Then you come back refreshed and normally the win more than lose when you don’t watch.
I’ve tried it many times over the last two seasons.
WARNING: This doesn’t work for the last 3-4 games of the season. Cubs are 0-6 after this.
samardzija was going to be called up. his stats at iowa were pretty darn good. iam excited, but does this change heilman’s staus at all? send heilman down to iowa and let him start. that is my opinion, fwiiw…
Just wanted to remind you that it is nice to have a roof over my head, and full stomach, and that life doesn’t suck as much as the Cubs lead to believe it does.
…there’s only so much you can blame the manager for. If you want to blame him for not forcing Soriano out of the leadoff spot, that’s fair game. The problem is not Soriano alone. What can he possibly do? Hendry brought in a new hitting coach and that hasn’t solved the problems either. The problem isn’t the management. It’s a problem with the players themselves. They have no one but themselves to blame for being a team that can’t play above .500 consistently. I honestly think the Cubs would be doing even worse if not for Lou Piniella and it takes a lot for me to admit that.
People loved him when the team won back to back division titles.
Here goes:
1) Who do you put at #2? Honestly answer that question for me.
2) Aramis Ramirez is on the DL, so the infield has been in shambles. Is it Mike Fontenot’s fault that in his first season as a starter that he has to learn a new position? Granted, he could have done better, but the organization made a judgment call on starting Mike Fontenot.
3) I’d rather not play Milton at all, but they’re paying him too much money to sit.
once I actually saw him manage. I liked that for a couple of years his players seemed to play for him (until the playoffs) but I’ve never been impressed with his in game managing.
1) Theriot
2) No, it’s not Fontenot’s fault that he isn’t very good, and Lou and Jim decided to hand him a job he didn’t earn, it was Jim and LOU’S which is the point of this discussion. Lou’s bad decision to keep him in the starting lineup.
Oh, and for those of you that were waiting for everyone else to lose. The Brewers are rocking the crap out of Johan. The end of this season could be the 4th of July.
Anyhow, this team is not good man. The slump is over, the talent is just not there. Honestly, since you seem to be one of few level headed people on here, when do the Cubs try and unload whatever they can? Seriously. 5 games out, 7 games out? We will most likely be 4.5 out after tonight, so when?
Who in this lineup bats leadoff? Who bats third now? Give me a lineup that can hit with runners in scoring position and I’ll tell you that no one on this team can do it no matter what lineup card you turn in.
Again. Give me a lineup with some logic behind it.
You can say someone needs to move in the lineup, but you need to think this out. Here’s a blank lineup card (except for pitcher). Fill it in and do it without knee jerk reactions.
And why not bat Theriot leadoff? He’s one of the better hitters on the team and he’s not necessarily an RBI guy. I would not bat Bradley in the heart of the order either. If anything, I’d move Soto down to where you have Bradley.
I’m going to go with a guy who has proved he can hit major league pitching over a long period. I want a little more experience in the leadoff spot. You can put Fuld second or even Bradley, which is not as odd as it sounds when you consider he seems to prefer taking walks. Fuld isn’t a bad choice, but if you want to move Bradley up, that’s the way to do it.
What evidence do you have that Fuld is actually better
This isn’t about getting rid of a guy you don’t like and just replacing him with someone else. You have to have some indication that he’d actually do a better job. He was .000/.333/.000 in his 14 MLB at-bats.
Alan Trammell can play better than Soriano. look below, Soriano has really proven himself right. He’s had a really great stretch since Ram got injured. Yeah, let’s stick with mediocre players that can’t field for shit. Let’s stick with players that strike out when you need a big hit from them. Yeah, I can’t wait until he strikes out with a runner on third and less than 2 outs. YEAH!
considering Soriano is hitting a robust .204 since Ram’s injury. Makes you optimistic, right. Along with that average, he has 15 rbis and 5 hrs. IN 43 Games, that makes me really excited !!!!!!
There are two guys consistently playing subpar. It doesn’t matter who takes their place; if the replacement goes 0 fer what have you lost? And if Soriano is “hurt” you give him a few games to heal.
should take Sullivan’s logic one step further and put Bradley, Soriano, Fukudome, Zambrano, Fontenot, Miles, and Soto on waivers. See if anyone bites. Itmight be a kick in the ass to see that no one wants them.
does not mean you drop them. It means if someone bites on them, you can trade them to that team. At least that is my understanding. If Im wrong, I apologize, but it is not cutting them.
You can't just start putting your star players on waivers
Let’s wait for Aramis Ramirez to come back and see if we need to make a trade after that. If we can’t make it, we’ll sell. If we’ve got a shot, we’ve got to be buyers.
i appreciate your optimism but I know you are dying to join the dark side and call a spade a spade. Not every season is going to end up with a division winner. This one is headed South fast. Regroup and hopefully by next year we will have a functional team.
But I am also a level headed person. I can understand everyone’s frustration who is on said “dark side”. I feel it too. If anyone doubts that I ache and hurt and get pissed off when this team does poorly, then they are sorely mistaken.
I was never as high like most around here last year, and I won’t get low and make unrealistic claims or proclaim the season over when we are not even close to being mathematically eliminated nor are we even 6 games back. Not too mention we have an EASIER schedule the second half of the season.
I agree our team is a mess. I agree we blow hardcore right now. I agree its embarrassing that our $150 million+ payroll ballclub plays like a bunch of unmotivated, lazy superstars.
Ill agree to disagree with you. I think this season is very close to being lost. I also feel the next couple of years could be really ugly. But only time will tell.
IIRC the 2003 cubs were a lot farther behind before the ASB and the 2006 cardinals werent that good having 2 8 game losing streaks and a 7 game losing streak either but still managed to win the world series
If you don’t make it, you can shake things up in the offseason. You’re losing Rich Harden to free agency. The sale should be done by then. You’ll have an easier time making what I’d say would be the great changes. I don’t think a lot of what’s wrong with this team can be fixed by July 31. There’s no reason to go on full fire sale mode because this season is not done yet.
I dont believe we could trade most of these guys. The point would be to send a message. This performance is unacceptable. Would it work. Maybe not, but it would not necessarily mean a fire sale.
Further, if you coud get out from under some of those contracts, that would be well worth suffering a rough fate this season. Imagine what a new GM could do without Fuku’s 12 million annual or Soriano’s 20 million, or Zambrano’s 15 or Bradleys 10
Zambrano looks to be having more of an off year to me than anything else. I’d say the same with Soriano even though I’m a bit suspicious about decline. I’m sold on Fukudome not being worth his salary, but that contract is too large to deal right now.
I dont think anyone wants these guys, thats why Im willing to throw them on waivers. If someone does want them, however, then trading them would be the right thing to do.
My point of using waivers, which is the same as Sullivan;s, is that there is a message there. If someone is so supid as to bite on the deal, then even better.
Worst case scenario though, this season, the last as The Trib’s team, will just epitomize what’s is wrong with this organization, and radical changes will be made once the new ownership gets in with a winning attitude.
Hendry has made some great deals in the past, but this year, this team, unless things turn around, is a fireable offense
LaRussa leaving the Cardinals, and the Cardinals inability to field a competitive team, coupled with poor attendance figures for the next two year because of said poor play, it is definitely a possibility
there aren’t going to be any changes to the roster until Ramirez has been back a few weeks. Coincidentally, that’s right about at the trading deadline. Once this team’s had ARam in the lineup again for a while — even if he doesn’t hit .350 — Lou and Hendry can make a call.
We’ve essentially been playing without our RBI guy for about two months now. It’s actually amazing that this team hasn’t gone completely in the cellar without him.
if he hits .270 I’ll be relatively happy. But you’re saying his production won’t matter, then saying that the team needs to see that a pitcher is in trouble with him at the plate.
The only way the pitcher is in trouble is if he’s hitting, and hitting well
and there's that winning strawman/hyperbole argument you love so much
You seriously crack me up. Getting ARAM back will magically make everyone else better. But when someone says getting Derosa might have made the offense better, it’s so ridiculous, that it’s like calling him Lou Gehrig.
I was skeptical of the trade to the Indians when it happened, it definitely damaged our fielding depth. But unil last year DeRo was a pretty average hitter. And last year was a career year. I feel Hendry rolled the dice, gambing that he would not get comparable numbers this year out of DeRo.
“The Cubs roster is filled with competent hitters” is it? Odd, I could have sworn we have one of the worst offenses in the NL, and THE worst with RISP. That doesn’t scream competence to me.
This is disgusting
We should sweep this team. I spit on the Cubs. Ptooey!

Soriano and Fukudome..1,2 in the lineup..wow
I dont care how bad Soriano hits anywhere else in the lineup..he should not be hitting leadoff..put him at 6 and let him cry the rest of the season..it will do good for the team..but Lou cares nothing about that..WOW
cubbiepride - June 30, 2009
I'm with you..
The Soriano can only hit leadoff argument was always dumb – but now it has no basis at all.
DisCUBbobulated - June 30, 2009
Yeah thats the irony
before we were always worried that if we moved him out of leadoff he wouldn’t hit. But… he isn’t hitting now. How could it be worse?

Ace Venom - June 30, 2009

WanderingWanderer - June 30, 2009
I don't like Lou, but...
Ace Venom - June 30, 2009
Lou is a below average in game manager
and his decisions this year have been beyond bad an awful lot.
Who the hell bats a guy who’s been hitting .170 this month at #2?
Why is Mike Fontenot still a starting player?
Why announce that Milton is going to get a few days off, then use him as a pinch hitter?
WanderingWanderer - June 30, 2009
Short bench
People loved him when the team won back to back division titles.
Here goes:
1) Who do you put at #2? Honestly answer that question for me.
2) Aramis Ramirez is on the DL, so the infield has been in shambles. Is it Mike Fontenot’s fault that in his first season as a starter that he has to learn a new position? Granted, he could have done better, but the organization made a judgment call on starting Mike Fontenot.
3) I’d rather not play Milton at all, but they’re paying him too much money to sit.
Ace Venom - June 30, 2009
I never "loved" Lou
once I actually saw him manage.
WanderingWanderer - June 30, 2009
This is a statement game if I have ever seen one.
Oh, and for those of you that were waiting for everyone else to lose. The Brewers are rocking the crap out of Johan. The end of this season could be the 4th of July.
louslovechild - June 30, 2009

louslovechild - June 30, 2009
We will play the Brewers and Cardinals first before we even begin selling
I still say we won’t
heine41 - June 30, 2009

Ryanocm1 - June 30, 2009
So what's your idea?
Who in this lineup bats leadoff? Who bats third now? Give me a lineup that can hit with runners in scoring position and I’ll tell you that no one on this team can do it no matter what lineup card you turn in.

TJ3117 - June 30, 2009

Danwood - June 30, 2009
aren't we already?
WanderingWanderer - June 30, 2009
Again. Give me a lineup with some logic behind it.
You can say someone needs to move in the lineup, but you need to think this out. Here’s a blank lineup card (except for pitcher). Fill it in and do it without knee jerk reactions.
1)
2)
3)
4)
5)
6)
7)
8)
9) Pitcher
Have at it.
Ace Venom - June 30, 2009
1. Fuld LF
2. Theriot SS
3. Lee 1B
4. Fox 3B
5. Bradley RF
6. Soto C
7. Fukdome CF
8. Blanco 2B
9. Pitcher
This isn’t everyday lineup but lou should change it up for a day or two
lexmarklover - June 30, 2009
Any reason why Soriano is not in the lineup?
And why not bat Theriot leadoff? He’s one of the better hitters on the team and he’s not necessarily an RBI guy. I would not bat Bradley in the heart of the order either. If anything, I’d move Soto down to where you have Bradley.
Ace Venom - June 30, 2009
Why not Fuld?
Triple A is triple A but look at his BB/K ratio. Bradley and Soto can interchange, it doesn’t really matter.
lexmarklover - June 30, 2009
Felix Pie was all world in AAA
WanderingWanderer - June 30, 2009
Sam Fuld didn't strike out 124 times in AAA
lexmarklover - June 30, 2009
no he sported a career .260 average in the MINORS
you’re going to have to excuse me if that doesn’t instill any confidence that he will contribute in any way to sparking our offense
WanderingWanderer - June 30, 2009
yeah too bad he had a career average of .287
but yeah
lexmarklover - June 30, 2009
If I'm going leadoff
I’m going to go with a guy who has proved he can hit major league pitching over a long period. I want a little more experience in the leadoff spot. You can put Fuld second or even Bradley, which is not as odd as it sounds when you consider he seems to prefer taking walks. Fuld isn’t a bad choice, but if you want to move Bradley up, that’s the way to do it.
Ace Venom - June 30, 2009
What evidence do you have that Fuld is actually better
This isn’t about getting rid of a guy you don’t like and just replacing him with someone else. You have to have some indication that he’d actually do a better job. He was .000/.333/.000 in his 14 MLB at-bats.
cocknfire - June 30, 2009
he's new! and therefore better!
WanderingWanderer - June 30, 2009
not that he's new
Alan Trammell can play better than Soriano. look below, Soriano has really proven himself right. He’s had a really great stretch since Ram got injured. Yeah, let’s stick with mediocre players that can’t field for shit. Let’s stick with players that strike out when you need a big hit from them. Yeah, I can’t wait until he strikes out with a runner on third and less than 2 outs. YEAH!
lexmarklover - June 30, 2009
i think he's gonna hit better than Soriano
considering Soriano is hitting a robust .204 since Ram’s injury. Makes you optimistic, right. Along with that average, he has 15 rbis and 5 hrs. IN 43 Games, that makes me really excited !!!!!!

TJ3117 - June 30, 2009
We could always reqcquire Corey Patterson
cocknfire - June 30, 2009
1) Gerald Perry
2) Lou Pinella
3) Paul Sullivan
4) Jim Hendry
5) Gordon Twittermeyer
6) Bob Brenly
7) Tom Ricketts
8) Alan Trammell
9) Pitcher
cocknfire - June 30, 2009
Hendry ..... cleaning up!!!!!!!
lexmarklover - June 30, 2009
errrrrr wrong
this isnt RLRLRLRLP
cozmotaylor123 - June 30, 2009
My mistake
I’ll trade away the character guys on there to clear up the error
cocknfire - June 30, 2009
It doesn't matter
Soriano: 0-3
Fukudome: 0-4
There are two guys consistently playing subpar. It doesn’t matter who takes their place; if the replacement goes 0 fer what have you lost? And if Soriano is “hurt” you give him a few games to heal.
Danwood - June 30, 2009
does it even matter?
and what start ryan freel or sam fuld…no thanks
TJ3117 - June 30, 2009
better defense & better at bats ...... i guess it doesn't really matter
lexmarklover - June 30, 2009
Jim Hendry
should take Sullivan’s logic one step further and put Bradley, Soriano, Fukudome, Zambrano, Fontenot, Miles, and Soto on waivers. See if anyone bites. Itmight be a kick in the ass to see that no one wants them.
Ryanocm1 - June 30, 2009
OMZZ!!! lets drop our players that are currently producing the least!!!
FANTASY BASEBAAAAALLLLLL!
heine41 - June 30, 2009
yeah then the cubs should pick up pujols sabathia peavy beckett and tex
jesus christos - June 30, 2009
Putting a guy on Waivers
does not mean you drop them. It means if someone bites on them, you can trade them to that team. At least that is my understanding. If Im wrong, I apologize, but it is not cutting them.
Ryanocm1 - June 30, 2009
yeah, and when noone picks them up, then you have even more clubhouse turmoil
thats the last thing we need
heine41 - June 30, 2009
It is?
I think the last thing we need is to let these guys continue to suck without consequence. I could give a rats ass about the clubhouse.
Ryanocm1 - June 30, 2009
Thank god you are not in no way making decisions for the the direction of this team
heine41 - June 30, 2009
If we keep the status quo
this season is lost. A shakeup is needed. Putting guys on waivers would send a message. If guys dont like it, im not really that concerned.
Ryanocm1 - June 30, 2009
You can't just start putting your star players on waivers
Let’s wait for Aramis Ramirez to come back and see if we need to make a trade after that. If we can’t make it, we’ll sell. If we’ve got a shot, we’ve got to be buyers.
Ace Venom - June 30, 2009
Star players?
Our stars are Lilly, Lee and Theriot and thats about it. And Ramirez. Those guys I listed are not stars.
Ryanocm1 - June 30, 2009
Theriot is not a star player
he’s decent, but he’s no where near a STAR
WanderingWanderer - June 30, 2009
on a real team no
on this team whos better?
Ryanocm1 - June 30, 2009
You want to put one of our better hitters on waivers?
What are we? The Pirates.
Ace Venom - June 30, 2009
No we are worse
unfortunately, with about four times the payroll.
Which of our better players did I want on waivers.
Ryanocm1 - June 30, 2009
when the hell did I say I wanted to put Theriot on waivers?
WanderingWanderer - June 30, 2009
we have no money to be buyers
because our stars are bein paid an absolute fortune.
Ryanocm1 - June 30, 2009
but we DO have money
8-10 million if im not mistaken
heine41 - June 30, 2009
honest question
where are you getting that figure
WanderingWanderer - June 30, 2009
I've read on here that Hendry has $8-10 million in his back pocket
I could be mistaken
heine41 - June 30, 2009
you read on here as in someone randomly said it once
or it was in a post with something to back it up?
WanderingWanderer - June 30, 2009
no dude
hendry just walks around with 10 mil in cash in his back pocket. everyoneeeeeee knows that. duh.
TJ3117 - June 30, 2009
And he'll give you a dollar now, two dollars next year
and the other $9,999,997 when you’re 42
cocknfire - June 30, 2009
this is pretty accurate lol
heine41 - June 30, 2009
thought I read it a couple of times from several different posters
Maybe even Al, but AGAIN I COULD BE WRONG
heine41 - June 30, 2009
HA!
Where did you hear THAT rumor? Here?
I’d bet $50 to Cubs Care that the Cubs will NOT spend that money in a trade acquisition this season with the current ownership.
Any takers??
The E-Man - June 30, 2009
heine41
i appreciate your optimism but I know you are dying to join the dark side and call a spade a spade. Not every season is going to end up with a division winner. This one is headed South fast. Regroup and hopefully by next year we will have a functional team.
BeltwayCubsFan - June 30, 2009
Yes, I am an optimist
But the sky isn’t falling yet, Chicken Little
heine41 - June 30, 2009
I'm no optimist
However, I am a realist. You’ve got to make smart moves and not moves out of desperation.
Ace Venom - June 30, 2009
Those are two levelheaded posts
Ill agree to disagree with you. I think this season is very close to being lost. I also feel the next couple of years could be really ugly. But only time will tell.
I hope you both are right.
Ryanocm1 - June 30, 2009
the cubs are only 4 games behind the brewers
IIRC the 2003 cubs were a lot farther behind before the ASB and the 2006 cardinals werent that good having 2 8 game losing streaks and a 7 game losing streak either but still managed to win the world series
jesus christos - June 30, 2009
Close doesn't mean for sure
If you don’t make it, you can shake things up in the offseason. You’re losing Rich Harden to free agency. The sale should be done by then. You’ll have an easier time making what I’d say would be the great changes. I don’t think a lot of what’s wrong with this team can be fixed by July 31. There’s no reason to go on full fire sale mode because this season is not done yet.
Ace Venom - June 30, 2009
My point is not to start a fire sale
I dont believe we could trade most of these guys. The point would be to send a message. This performance is unacceptable. Would it work. Maybe not, but it would not necessarily mean a fire sale.
Further, if you coud get out from under some of those contracts, that would be well worth suffering a rough fate this season. Imagine what a new GM could do without Fuku’s 12 million annual or Soriano’s 20 million, or Zambrano’s 15 or Bradleys 10
Ryanocm1 - June 30, 2009
What could he do?
Zambrano looks to be having more of an off year to me than anything else. I’d say the same with Soriano even though I’m a bit suspicious about decline. I’m sold on Fukudome not being worth his salary, but that contract is too large to deal right now.
Ace Venom - June 30, 2009
and who do we get to take these contracts?
heine41 - June 30, 2009
Let me be clear
I dont think anyone wants these guys, thats why Im willing to throw them on waivers. If someone does want them, however, then trading them would be the right thing to do.
My point of using waivers, which is the same as Sullivan;s, is that there is a message there. If someone is so supid as to bite on the deal, then even better.
Ryanocm1 - June 30, 2009
Well, there would be plenty of GMs available at that point, because any GM that took any of those contracts except Z would quickly be fired.
cocknfire - June 30, 2009
The point of having a job...
…is to try to keep that job. Doing something that you know can get you fired isn’t exactly good for your job security.
Ace Venom - June 30, 2009
My point was
That no one is going to take those contracts, again with the exception of Z, for good reason
cocknfire - June 30, 2009
believe me, I hope I'm right too
Worst case scenario though, this season, the last as The Trib’s team, will just epitomize what’s is wrong with this organization, and radical changes will be made once the new ownership gets in with a winning attitude.
Hendry has made some great deals in the past, but this year, this team, unless things turn around, is a fireable offense
heine41 - June 30, 2009
Heine, you said it better
than I ever could.
Gotta hand it to a level-headed Peoria person.
Not Bruce Froemming - June 30, 2009

Well, I just might have to reconsider that. :) Make it “Peoria-area person.”

Danwood - June 30, 2009
We now have a new motto for this team - An Embarassment of Riches.
willie mays hayes' gloves - June 30, 2009
I got a motto- shutout baseball .... that's what we do
lexmarklover - June 30, 2009
Optimist - or Pessimist
or “Realist”
We can all agree on one thing:
This team right now is really bad.
I was not expecting to sweep the Pirates. But a shutout??? $140MM payroll vs. $15MM?
The E-Man - June 30, 2009
It's baseball man
This is not the NFL, things like this happen over the course of a 162 season.
Just sucks that its been happening a bit too often
heine41 - June 30, 2009
a bit too often?
3 months of bad baseball is pretty often.
TJ3117 - June 30, 2009
Agreed,
Heine. It is not the NFL. Note the words, “…team RIGHT NOW is really bad…”
The worst in baseball with RISP.
The E-Man - June 30, 2009
Yes we are horrible right now
But injuries and team-wide slumps know no payroll
heine41 - June 30, 2009
Pujols hits 29 and 30
unbelievable ball player.
Ryanocm1 - June 30, 2009
See the sig baby :)
heine41 - June 30, 2009
How you gonna pull that off?
Ricketts going to buy the Cards and then nontender him?
cocknfire - June 30, 2009
I've seen how poorly $150 million can be spent
And how teams like the Marlins, Rays, etc. can compete with limited payrolls.
Cubs figure out how to fix one thing and implement the other, getting Pujols is NOT out of the question
heine41 - June 30, 2009
The Cardinals would have to be insane to give him up
And I mean, literally insane. As in, Tony LaRussa banging his head against the wall, screaming, “ROSEBUD! ROSEBUD!” insane. Ain’t going to happen.
cocknfire - June 30, 2009
I'm glad I set my beer down
That post really made me laugh.
Ace Venom - June 30, 2009
Pujols will never leave the Cards.
VegasCubFan - June 30, 2009
Never say never
but your’re probably right.
Not Bruce Froemming - June 30, 2009
knowing the history of the Cubs
we would finally get Pujols when he’s 45 and cannot hit anymore.
VegasCubFan - June 30, 2009
lol or we do get him and he turns into some .280 15 hr's 75 rbi guy
WTF!
heine41 - June 30, 2009
We got Hornsby in 1929, who won the MVP that year
Problem is that Hack Wilson couldn’t catch a fly ball in the 1929 World Series.
Ace Venom - June 30, 2009
You don't know this
LaRussa leaving the Cardinals, and the Cardinals inability to field a competitive team, coupled with poor attendance figures for the next two year because of said poor play, it is definitely a possibility
heine41 - June 30, 2009
you are right
and I cannot say the man is loyal to the Cardinals. He appears to be. But would want to be the STL GM who lets Pujols go to the Cubs?
VegasCubFan - June 30, 2009
I just don't think the Cardinals will be able to pay him what he deserves even AFTER a hometown discount
and still be able to put the kind of players around him he feels he deserves.
Its like they A. Resign Pujols to his mega-contract and then be the STL Pujols for the next 10 years, or move one and field a competitive team
heine41 - June 30, 2009
but look at what he does now with no protection around him.
VegasCubFan - June 30, 2009
he's not interested in his numbers
he wants rings
heine41 - June 30, 2009
True enough
I still don’t think he’s leaving St. Louis, but I wouldn’t be shocked if he did.
Not Bruce Froemming - June 30, 2009

it won’t be for the Cubs
ElHijoDelRonSanto - June 30, 2009

heine41 - June 30, 2009
who is to say what Albert would do?
VegasCubFan - June 30, 2009
Actually, he could probably get $10 million a year
From ESPN, just for the honor of having him in their presence.
cocknfire - June 30, 2009
hes going to go where
A. He can be competitve and B. Get Paid.
heine41 - June 30, 2009
The bottom line is
there aren’t going to be any changes to the roster until Ramirez has been back a few weeks. Coincidentally, that’s right about at the trading deadline. Once this team’s had ARam in the lineup again for a while — even if he doesn’t hit .350 — Lou and Hendry can make a call.
Not Bruce Froemming - June 30, 2009
Bingo
We’ve essentially been playing without our RBI guy for about two months now. It’s actually amazing that this team hasn’t gone completely in the cellar without him.
Ace Venom - June 30, 2009
and I well stand by it. You add an RBI guy
Other RBI guys will come out of the woodwork
heine41 - June 30, 2009
except that no one knows how much of ARAM will come back
dislocated shoulder is something that can linger a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG time. Take it from someone who’s athletic career was ended by them.
I was no all -star, but was a college athlete, and had to give it up because my shoulder constantly popped out, after the first time.
WanderingWanderer - June 30, 2009
It will be his presence more than his production that will help this team
he could hit .270 and i still think things will come around. We don’t need bombs and power numbers, we need timely hitting.
We need a reminder that when you have runners on 3rd and 2nd with noone out, the pitcher is the one in trouble, not out offense
heine41 - June 30, 2009
that makes no sense
if he hits .270 I’ll be relatively happy. But you’re saying his production won’t matter, then saying that the team needs to see that a pitcher is in trouble with him at the plate.
The only way the pitcher is in trouble is if he’s hitting, and hitting well
WanderingWanderer - June 30, 2009
Aramis would have delivered in the 8th inning tonight
regardless of his average when he comes back
heine41 - June 30, 2009
At this point, he could hit .170 and still be one of the team's best hitters
cocknfire - June 30, 2009
Ummm...
we are almost in the cellar.
The E-Man - June 30, 2009
Not there yet.
Being in near the cellar in June isn’t exactly the same as being in the cellar in July or August.
Ace Venom - June 30, 2009
oh lord.
WanderingWanderer - June 30, 2009
Remember this
Just having ARam in the lineup will settle down the order. He doesn’t have to hit a ton.
Not Bruce Froemming - June 30, 2009
this coming from the guy who believed that having Dero in the lineup wouldn't have helped at all
your lack of logic knows no bounds
WanderingWanderer - June 30, 2009
If you don't know the difference between ARam and DeRo
Then I can’t help you. Then again, I don’t think anybody can.
But I forgot, DeRo is the reincarnation of Lou Gehrig.
Not Bruce Froemming - June 30, 2009
he was actually someone who was driving in runs
which is presumably what ARAM will do. You just didn’t want him here out of some sort of weird spite towards those who did.
You NEVER from what I saw, gave a reason why Dero wouldn’t have upgraded the offense. It’s simple statistics.
WanderingWanderer - June 30, 2009
and there's that winning strawman/hyperbole argument you love so much
You seriously crack me up. Getting ARAM back will magically make everyone else better. But when someone says getting Derosa might have made the offense better, it’s so ridiculous, that it’s like calling him Lou Gehrig.
Like I said, your lack of logic knows no bounds
WanderingWanderer - June 30, 2009
Not the right comparison
DeRosa: .263/.336/.446
Fontenot: .219/.304/.357
cocknfire - June 30, 2009
Neither of them is burning it up
But given a choice…
cocknfire - June 30, 2009
it's a fine comparison when the original argument was
that having a competent hitter makes the rest of the offense better
WanderingWanderer - June 30, 2009
There's a difference
between a “competent hitter” and a perennial all-star who is/has been the best hitter on your club, you moron.
The Cubs roster is filled with competent hitters, more competent than your hero, even.
It’s like talking to a brick wall.
Not Bruce Froemming - June 30, 2009
DeRosa
I was skeptical of the trade to the Indians when it happened, it definitely damaged our fielding depth. But unil last year DeRo was a pretty average hitter. And last year was a career year. I feel Hendry rolled the dice, gambing that he would not get comparable numbers this year out of DeRo.
VegasCubFan - June 30, 2009
My hero? speaking of a brick wall.....
“The Cubs roster is filled with competent hitters” is it? Odd, I could have sworn we have one of the worst offenses in the NL, and THE worst with RISP. That doesn’t scream competence to me.
Neither do any of your posts for that matter
WanderingWanderer - June 30, 2009
Look at their track record
Yes, the roster is filled with competent hitters.
Not Bruce Froemming - June 30, 2009
they aren't competent this year, and Derosa has been
which is the point that keeps flying over your head like an airplane circling a crowded runway
